The derivative of the surface tension with orientation, ??/??, for copper has been measured over the entire unit triangle. This derivative or torque term was determined from the variation of the dihedral angles at the intersection of twin boundaries and free surfaces. High-temperature anneals in graphite with a hydrogen atmosphere gave torque terms of 0.097 at (111), 0.066 at (100), and 0.0257 at (110). A variation from -36oto +23oC in the dew Point of the H2 had no effect on these values, nor did a change from 99.98 to 99.999 pct Pure copper. The removal of graphite from the system decreased ??/?? slightly. Considering the surface near a low-index plane to be smooth except for occasional steps, the free-energy increment per cm of step is calculated, and it is shown that the observed variation of ??/?? is consistent with a random distribution of steps and an interaction energy between steps. Integration of ??/?? gave the relative values of y at (100), (110), and (111) as comPared to ymax: (Y111/Ymax) =0.974, (Y110/Ymax) =0.996, (y100/Ymax) = 0.983. The ratio of the surface tension of coherent twin boundaries to the surface tension of the free surface was found to be (yT/ys) = 0.027 * 0.011. In a crystalline solid the surface tension y (surface free energy per unit area) depends on the orientation of the surface relative to the crystallographic axes of the crystal. Measurements of this variation of y with surface orientation have been reported for metals only within the last few years. Consider the grain boundary groove shown in Fig. 1. Here the three surfaces are all normal to the plane of the paper, and each has a different surface tension, y1, y2, and y3. If the system is at equilibrium, the total surface free energy must remain unchanged for a slight vertical displacement of the intersection (points A, B, and C are kept fixed). EVERY reader of this paper is well aware of the fact that the prolonged inhalation of large amounts of free silica dust results in fibrosis of the lungs, and that other inorganic dusts, except those of asbestos and the mineral poisons, are thought to be relatively harmless. But probably few have had opportunity to visualize the effects of silica, asbestos and other minerals upon living tissues. The ideal demonstration would be based upon sections of lungs from human beings that had inhaled com- parable concentrations of different dusts for a unit period of time. Such material is generally difficult to obtain and in some instances is of questionable value because the subject has been exposed to more than one kind of dust. A demonstration could be prepared from the lungs of animals. However, so many months or even years are required to complete the exposure to each kind of dust that enough material has not been accumulated. For a general survey of the action of different types of dust, I am therefore compelled to use the tissues of animals that have been injected with suspensions of dust particles. The injection method offers certain advantages. The quantity, the particle size and the state of dispersion can be controlled with sufficient accuracy so that the tissue responses to different minerals can be accurately compared. The method insures contact between the tissues and the mineral particles; protective mechanisms, which may prevent the inhalation of certain types of foreign body, never come into play. If the pathway of injection be one that minimizes nonspecific injury, the tissue responses may simulate those produced by inhalation but they develop somewhat more rapidly. It should always be remembered that injection methods merely demonstrate the capacity of various kinds of minerals to provoke reaction in the tissues; whether the same substances are inhaled from atmospheric suspension and accumulate in the lungs in dangerous quantities can be demonstrated only by inhalation. The reactions that I shall discuss first took place not in the lungs but in the liver. For the purpose in hand this is quite immaterial for we are merely seeking to discover whether these minerals are capable of produc-

A large coal-fired power plant is to be built jointly by Pacific Power & Light Co. of Portland, Ore., and by The Washington Water Power Co. of Spokane, Wash., at a site about six miles northeast of Centralia, Wash. (Fig. 1 inset). Coal will be mined from nearby open-pit strip mines that will require cut slopes up to 250 ft in height. Coal will be removed from a seam approximately 50 ft thick, located at the bottom of the mine slopes. The coal fields are located in a geologically complex area that has been subjected to intense folding and faulting. As a result, the soils and rock comprising the overburden are highly fractured, jointed, and faulted. Classical approaches to slope stability based solely on the physical proper- ties of the overburden appeared to offer little assurance that theoretically stable slopes would remain stable. Further, the scope of the exploration program that would be required to provide a reasonable evaluation of the primary and secondary structural features from which a statistical evaluation could be developed was considered impractical. As part of the development of an overall mining plan, an experimental Pilot mine excavation, about 225 ft high and about 400 ft long at the base, was made within the coal field. This experimental cut was to provide firsthand knowledge of cut slope behavior. Our purpose at the Pilot mine was to observe the cut slopes as the excavation proceeded. To accomplish this purpose, the highwall of the experimental cut was instrumented to measure face movements and movement at depth behind the face. In addition, a detailed geologic map of the soil and rock conditions exposed in the highwall was prepared, and continual visual observations of the mine were made, noting significant events as they occurred.

Search for ore continued at a feverish pace-as can be attested to by anyone who has tried to arrange for extensive diamond drilling. The stakes are high, and so is the cost as was indicated by Selco Exploration Ltd. when they announced discovery of base metal sulfides at Uchi Lake in northwestern Ontario. It was apparently their first commercial find after 15 years of exploration at a cost of more than $10 million. For the first time in many, many years the big exploration news has come from east of the Mississippi River. In January, the New Jersey Zinc Co., in an unusually worded press release, stated that they had made a major zinc discovery of 13-50 million tons of ore averaging 5-10% Zn. New Jersey's holdings are said to embrace 500 sq mi. The ore was discovered in eastern Tennessee in the upper part of the Knox dolomite of early Ordovician age. Reportedly the mineralization is at depths of 900 to 2000 ft. Currently about 20 diamond drills are working the area for New Jersey. At least nine other major companies are prospecting the region, which now includes parts of Kentucky. Five hundred thousand acres are said to be under lease. Greatest activity is clustered around Carthage, Tenn. In Missouri, the St. Joseph Lead Co. announced plans to develop a new mine in the Brushy Creek area of the "New Lead Belt." copper and zinc concentrates will be by-products.

The analysis of the phenomena involved in determining the compressive strength of iron-ore agglomerates leads to the identification of important parameters. It is shown mathematically that the pellet rupture strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Fracture is initiated at the center of the pellets by the tensile stresses developed by the compressive loads normally to the compressive axis. The variation in strength between individual pellets of identical composition and subjected to identical treatments u due to internal voids of varying sixes that act as stress-concentration sites. Two novel testing procedures are proposed. The first consults of testing the pellets between two plates having three steel spheres each. This configuration simulates much better the environment actually encountered by the pellets. The second procedure consists of a thick-walled cylinder in which a piston penetrates; a large group of pellets is tested simultaneously, as the stress versus strain plot is being recorded. This latter test presents vacant advantages over the conventional testing procedure; the main one is that one single test is sufficient to characterize the mechanical response of the pellets.

At the AIME meeting in Tampa in Oct. 1966, an empirically developed equation was presented which allowed the calculation of free settling velocity for any sized particle: 1 [ ] This equation requires the use of two parameters a and p which are coefficients derived from boundary layer theory.2 It was possible to develop values of a and p for several minerals by back calculation of published data. The original equation had one major flaw. When the fluid density exceeds the density of the solids, the solution to the equation becomes imaginary. A flaw was indicated also by the fact that galena and sylvite both having cubic cleavage, did not have similar values for a and b. Galena gave calculated values of a = 1.082 and g = 3.11, while sylvite gave values of a = 1.870 and p = 2.56. These flaws prompted further study of the equation, resulting in the following empirical modification: [ ] It is obvious a real solution of the equation is possible for all values of ps and p. When PL > PS, V is negative, indicating that the particles will rise against the attraction of gravity. The validity of the modification is borne out by the fact that when values of a and p were back calculated for galena and sylvite using the modified equation, both minerals gave values of a = 1.038 and p = 3.01. With the modification shown in Eq. 2, Newton's friction factor becomes [ ]

A new process for extracting uranium from ores with carbonate solutions is described. Leaching is carried out under oxygen pressure to ensure that all the uranium is converted to the soluble hexavalent state. By this method), alkaline leaching can be used successfully to treat a greater variety of ores, including pitchblende ores, than has been possible in the past. The advantages of carbonate leaching over conventional acid leaching processes are enhanced further by a new method which has been developed for recovering uranium from basic leach solutions. This is achieved by reducing the uranium to the tetravalent state with hydrogen in the presence of a suitable catalyst. A high grade uranium oxide product is precipitated directly from the leach solutions. Vanadium oxide also can be precipitated by this method. The chemistry of the leaching and precipitation reactions are discussed, and laboratory results are presented which illustrate the applicability of the process and describe the variables affecting leaching and precipitation rates, recoveries, and reagent consumption. THE extractive metallurgy of uranium is influenced by a number of special considerations which generally do not arise in connection with the treatment of the more common base metal ores. Perhaps foremost among these is the very low uranium content of most of the ores which are encountered today, usually only a few tenths of one percent. A further difficulty is presented by the fact that the uranium often occurs in such a form that it cannot be concentrated efficiently by gravity or flotation methods. In these and other important respects, there is evident some degree of parallelism between the extractive metallurgy of uranium and that of gold and, as in the latter case, it has generally been found that uranium ores can best be treated directly by selective leaching methods. It is readily evident that this parallel does not extend to the chemical properties of the two metals. Unlike gold, which is easily reduced to metallic form, uranium is highly reactive. It tends to occur as oxides, silicates, or salts. Two ores are of predominant importance as commercial sources of this metal: pitchblende which contains uranium as the oxide, U3O51 and carnotite in which the uranium is present as a complex salt with vanadium, K2O-2UCV3V2O5-3H2O. These ores may vary widely in respect to the nature of their gangue constituents. Some are largely siliceous in composition, while others consist mainly of calcite. Sometimes substantial amounts of pyrite or of organic materials are present and these may lead to specific problems in treating the ore. Further complications may be introduced by the presence of other metal values such as gold, copper, cobalt, or vanadium whose re- covery has to be considered along with that of the uranium, or whose separation from uranium presents particular difficulty. In general, there are two main processes for recovering uranium in common use today.'.2 One of these employs an acid solution such as dilute sulphuric acid to extract the uranium from the ore. A suitable oxidizing agent such as MnO, or NaNO, is sometimes added if the uranium in the ore is in a partially reduced state. The uranium dissolves as a uranyl sulphate salt and can be precipitated subsequently by neutralization or other suitable treatment of the solution. The second process employs an alkaline leaching solution, usually containing sodium carbonate. The uranium, which must be in the hexavalent state, is dissolved as a complex uranyl tricarbonate salt, and then is precipitated either by neutralizing the solution with acid or by adding an excess of sodium hydroxide. The latter method has the advantage of permitting the solutions to be recycled, since the carbonate is not destroyed. This is essential if the process is to be economical, particularly with low grade ores. With each of these processes, there are associated a number of advantages and disadvantages and the choice between using acid or carbonate leaching is generally determined by the nature of the ore to be treated. In the past, more ores appear to have been amenable to acid leaching than to carbonate leaching and the former process correspondingly has found wider application. With most ores, acid leaching has been found to operate fairly efficiently and to yield high recoveries. One of the main disadvantages has been that large amounts of impurities, such as iron and aluminum, sometimes are taken into solution along with the uranium. ASIDE from the annual dinner-dance, the two outstanding social events of the Annual Meeting were the dinner- smoker on Monday night and the informal dance on Tuesday night, both of which were held at the Commodore Hotel. Approximately 400 attended the former event, compared with 570 a year ago, and about 250, people were attracted to the dance.

The world's largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

TOO early spring may be the explanation for the poor turnout of mining and metallurgical engineer candidates at a large New York guidance conference, but it would be wiser to take a more serious view of this occurrence. Held a few weeks ago, the meeting was preceded by weeks of preparation and publicity in which many engineering societies participated. The meeting was the First Greater New York University downtown campus for splitting up anticipated to draw about 20,000 high school students from the New York area and environs. Seven of the theatres in the Paramount chain were avail- able to hold the audience for a panel program on career opportunities which was to be televised and piped into the theatres. Following the morning theatre session, students were to adjourn to the New York University downtown campus for splitting up into workshop sessions devoted to seventeen different branches-of the profession.

This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of determining, in a systematic way, the effect of the rate of cooling of steels, heated to above the transformation range, on their various mechanical properties. This paper gives the results obtained in the investigation of the heat treatment of carbon steels carried out under the auspices of the Committee on The Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the Engineering Division, National Research Council. The objects of this committee, of which Dr. Henry M. Howe was chairman, were to increase knowledge of the influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of carbon steel. The mcthod pursued was to subject specimens of steel of the carbon contents most used for engineering work, 0.34 per cent., 0.52 per cent., and 0.75 per cent., to various heat treatments, and to test the mechanical properties thus induced. The steels were the same as were used by the committee on fatigue phenomena. This project was financed jointly by the U. S. Bureaus of Mines and Standards; industries and university laboratories have cooperated. A large part of the work was done at Doctor Howe's private laboratory. The committee consisted of F. B. Foley, H. AT. Boylston, H. C. Boynton, G. K. Burgess, H. J. French, J. H. Hall, Zay Jeffries, R. S. Johnston, F. C. Langenberg, H. F. Moore, E. H. Yeirce, H. S. Rawdon, W. E. Ruder and 11. J. Stagg. The year 1935 was mostly quiet in West Virginia, and devoted to routine drilling in old pools and extensions. A notable exception to this general rule, however, was the further development and proving of a field of gas discovered in 1930 in the deep Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) in Kanawha County, as later discussed. No new pools of oil were found and little or no attempt was made to search for them. No new pools of gas were recorded but various extensions of old pools were made. There were no new pipe line extensions of consequence, either for oil or gas. Operating technology was much the same as in recent years, there having been some further advances in repressuring oil wells and in the use of acid for treating small wells in calcareous formations, and some change in the technique of shooting gas wells. Financially, there has been a full market for all crude oil produced and a fair market for gas. There have been occasional transfers of producing oil or gas properties, mainly between established companies. Most of the attempts made to finance mergers and new developments have failed largely because of difficulties encountered under the Federal securities act. This situation has prevented the normal turnover of properties by small operators who frequently desire to sell partly developed interests and then step out into new ventures. New Development In 1935 the State issued 569 permits for drilling and records the same number of completions. One trade journal records 533 completions and another 483. A running record kept by the writer accounts for 713 completions, with 156 oil wells, 417 gas wells and 140 dry holes (Table 3). Some of these completions may be old wells drilled to deeper sands. Some, apparently, have been drilled without legal permit. Extensions of Producing Areas Ritchie County has again led all others in new drilling, with 137 completions as compared to 74 in Calhoun and 61 in Cabell. This Ritchie County drilling was done mainly to extend or further develop old pools

SEVERAL notable papers, and free discussion on many controversial subjects, marked the various sessions of the Petroleum Division at the annual meeting. The Division first convened on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, and wound up with a dinner and technical meeting on Thursday night. H. C. Fowler presided at the opening session, which was devoted to problems of engineering research and production engineering. Joseph Chalmers abstracted his paper on the flow of air and gas through porous media, in the preparation of which E. L Rawlins and D. B. Talia-ferro contributed. G. H. Fancher told how much he and his associates at Pennsylvania State College were interested in this field, and described the problems they had met in conducting test work. He made a plea for standardization of testing methods. Mr. Fowler then read an abstract of written discussion by Professor Barb, which was followed by discussion by Dr. Fancher and Mr. Chalmers of technical points in connection with the Chalmers' paper. H. H. Hill abstracted written discussion from Messrs. Wilde and Moore, of the Humble company. The second paper, by K. B. Nowels, on computing pressure drop in the pipe of flowing oil wells, was abstracted by the author. Messrs. Blair Smith, G. W. Coggeshall, and I. I. Gardescu participated in the discussion, and the chairman abstracted written discussion prepared by Mr. Rawlins. Most of this had to do with the viscosity of gas¬oil mixtures, on which subject Mr. Nowels said there was great need of accurate technical information.

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) MANY factors govern the value of dredging-ground, and much capital can be wasted by the mistaken policy of contracting for the purchase of property and the installation of machinery before a thorough, examination has been made. To the uninitiated investor the presence of gold is generally the criterion,, and very superficial evidence is necessary to satisfy him as to this point. He considers the comprehensive report of a competent engineer as a wasteful extravagance and cannot understand why the engineer requires so much time and money to ascertain the information on which to base his conclusions, when the promoter can furnish him such pleasing and satisfactory data with but little expenditure of time and money. The uninitiated investor will often optimistically risk capital for purchase and equipment, and not until the venture comes to grief does he learn that the conditions are wholly unsuited for dredging. In many instances, a short preliminary examination by a competent engineer would have disclosed these facts. The mere presence of gold is by no means sufficient; some of the other factors necessary to be ascertained in determining the value of placer-ground for dredging-purposes are : (1) character and distribution of gold, and how much can economically be recovered; (2) character of bedding underlying the gravel, its contour, and whether its gold can be recovered by ordinary dredging-operations; (3) area and depths of gravel, surface contour, over-burden, water-level, proportion of fine material and boulders, and the presence of any material which might interfere with the dredging-operations and the recovery of the gold; (4) water-supply, power available, labor, transportation, and supplies, and cost of these ; (5) climatic condi-tions; (6) title to property, cost and royalties, and legal obstacles to carrying on dredging-operations. PIG iron was first produced in Alabama in 1818 from limonite or brown ore and since then much of this ore has come from the so-called mineral district of northern Alabama, especially along the Cretaceous-Paleozoic contact. For many years the Russellville district in Franklin County, where the first blast furnace was erected, produced more than 100,000 tons of brown ore annually. Limonite has been reported at many places in the Coastal Plain region, where the formations are of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age, but these scattered deposits were never considered to be of much commercial importance. However, in the last three years a considerable quantity of this ore has been scraped up and shipped, particularly from the city of Greenville in Butler County.

SUMMARY Statistics on roof falls indicate that the cost of just removing the unwanted waste from roof falls in US coal mines amounts to about $20 M per year. Almost 40 percent of fatal accidents occur under permanently supported roofs, indicating that the assessment of roof stability is still a very difficult task. In an effort to obtain a better understanding of roof fall occurrences, rock strength and ground stresses were determined in the roof of one mine each in Western Kentucky, northern West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. Triaxial ground stress determinations clearly show that horizontal stresses were higher than vertical stresses, and that maximum stresses in the horizontal plane were concentrated between the NE-SW to E-W direction, with the exception of the Eastern Kentucky site which was above the drainage. Magnitudes of stress components may vary considerably in one drlll hole. Strength tests of roof strata materials were done on core samples. Mapping of roof falls showed that the geometry of an opening or maximum span were not the overruling factor because in the same general area, a roof fall was observed in a room (entry) which connected two stable four-way intersections. It should be noted that, in very wet areas, the roof can break up to the bed where water is carried, and a very low ratio between extent of roof fall to height of roof, fall is observed. Geometry is, however, a contributing factor because nearly 70 percent of roof falls are intersection falls. The frequency of fractures parallel to bedding in failed roof strata is much higher than that observed in the original strata, indicating a significant amount of working in the roof before failure.

Geological Sketch.-The rhyolite area near Silver Cliff includes what may be called the Silver Cliff plateau, with Round mountain and the intervening valley. The plateau is about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. From its northern part rise the White hills, which have no special topographic importance, as their highest point is only 400 ft. above the northern edge of the rhyolite mass. Round mountain, on the other hand, is a quite sharply pointed conical hill, so steep-sided as to constitute an important topographic feature, although its elevation above the plains around it is barely 700 ft. The summit of Round mountain is dense banded rhyolite, with steep, irregular clip; the southern end is breccia containing fragments of the banded rock. There are slight exposures of glassy forms of rhyolite on the lower slopes. On the east, the Archaean rocks extend half-way up the side of the mountain, and the contact between them and the rhyolite is vertical, or dips steeply to the west. This mountain is supposed to be at the vent from which the rhyolite of the plateau was poured out. The Silver Cliff plateau occupies the site of a former basin, in which at one time there was probably a lake. At the time of the rhyolitic outburst of the Rosita hills there was a local eruption of the same character in this region, commencing with showers of volcanic ash and of rock-fragments, which filled the lake and built tip about it hills which have since been removed in great measure by erosion. At present the southern half of the plateau is capped by solid lava to a depth in places of 150 ft. The cliff of blackened rhyolite on the southern edge, where the main discovery of ore was made, is from 30 to 50 ft.
