Much has been written in the past about the non- cataracting ball mill as typified by the installations of the Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill and the three units of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. in its Humboldt and Republic mills. Because no direct comparisons are available from the Cleveland-Cliffs plants and because the published data of Tennessee Copper Co.'s London mill covered a period of development over several years, it has been difficult for engineers to grasp the full significance of the non-cataracting economics.

A recent paper by Adams and vreeland30 describes dislocation density changes in zinc as a function of shear strain. The dislocation density was determined with the aid of an etching technique previously described by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland.31 However, comparison of dislocation densities obtained by electron microscopy and this etching technique are not in good agreement, as will be shown below. Discovery of the Delbridge massive sulfide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage halo as a lithochemical pathfinder to blind ore. Its location, relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy was also a factor. Systematic sampling of microfractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulfide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 110-m (360-ft) level.

INDIVIDUALS and small companies have discovered and brought into production the mining districts of the United States. Hardly an exception comes to mind, save for the disseminated copper properties and the great iron mines. In spite of this fine record that has made possible the industrial greatness of the country, mining by small companies and by individuals has become a vanishing phenomenon. In Nevada, the lair of rugged individualism, there are fewer operating mines and fewer miners than at any time since the 1860's. The situation in other states is nearly as desperate.

Ocean engineers and technologists will assemble in Houston, Texas, during May 3-6, 1976, for the Eighth Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) . More than 50,000 members of industry, government, and academia from 94 nations will participate in what is generally acknowledged as the offshore industry's show-of-shows. A well-diversified 280-paper technical program has been divided into 42 general sessions that range from seafloor surveying and offshore mining to navigation systems and environmental issues. In addition, the largest technical- educational exhibition in the conference's eight-year history will augment the OTC '76 program.

OBSERVATIONS made in this paper were for the purpose of exploring the anomalous behavior of a particular heat of Type 310 stainless steel. The alloy, of nominal composition 25 pct Cr, 20 pct Ni, was observed to form a grain boundary precipitate at exceedingly high rates. A sheet of this metal, 0.060 in. thick, after cooling in air from 2000°F showed the presence of the grain boundary material, whereas none was found after water-quenching from the same temperature. A laboratory scale cell (approximately 50 amps current) equipped with a fluidized bed cathode was used in a study of the electrodeposition of cobalt from acidified aqueous sulfate solutions The effect of current density (in the range 0.1 to 1 amp/cm2 of diaphragm), cobalt concentration (4 8 to 100 glliter) and catholyte pH (1 35 to 6 2) on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined. Pink Tennessee Marble was tested for wedge bit penetration characteristics at static and dynamic (10 - 250 ft/sec) loading rates. No significant differences were found within the dynamic range as far as the energy required to remove a unit crater volume and the force used to cause a certain penetration. Under static loading, however, both the energy and the force required were significantly lower. Tests run on bits of varying width indicated that as the wedge bit narrowed to an almost conical shape, the energy used per unit crater volume became considerably lower.
