Last time there was a Take Five in these pages, it dealt largely with the matters considered by your Board of Directors at the meeting on October 20, 1970, in St. Louis, Mo. It was impossible to cover all the points worthy of discussion in the space available. So, at the end of the Take Five in the December issue of [i=], I promised to continue in the next installment. Unfortunately, I was unable to keep that promise. On December 2 your humble servant joined the ranks of those who have suffered a coronary occlusion. While I was away from the office, the very excellent SME staff team that we have built up over the years kept things going without bothering the "old man" unnecessarily. Assistant Executive Secretary, John V. Beall, Mrs. Lillian E. Donaldson, Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ruth Orologio, Administrative Assistant, and Mrs. Alice Ruiz exceeded even their usual dedicated efforts. As a result, the SME came up to the Centennial-Annual Meeting in great shape.

INTRODUCTION The real problem is finding the "appropriate" financing sources by matching the risk and reward expectations of the various classes of investors and lenders. Generally, lenders who advance funds temporarily are interested in assuming only limited risk and conversely expect to earn only a limited reward. The equity owners on the other hand, are expected to take most of the risk of the enterprise, but should receive a reward commensurate with that risk. In particular they will receive the benefit of the company's increase in net worth over time. MINE DEVELOPMENT CYCLE Consider the development cycle of a mining project beginning with rank wildcat exploration (Figure 1) [ ] Just as different professionals must be utilized at different stages, so must different funding sources be used at different points in the pipeline. Figure 2 shows the general sources of funding: [ ] This concept can perhaps be better understood if we compare the risk with the capital requirements. The Morris mine, operated by the Inland Steel Co., is located about 5 miles west of Ishpeming, Mich., near the west end of the Marquette Range. The ore, a soft hematite, is mined by sublevel caving and stoping. A considerable amount of surface water flows down through the cave into the ore or percolates down along footwall dikes in the iron formation. Because of this water, the broken ore cannot be stored in the raises and must be scraped from the sub directly into the tram cars. Efficient tramming, therefore, requires close coordination between the scraping and loading operations. In the past this has been hampered by the lack of a suitable means of communication between the mining contracts and the drawpoints on the tramming levels. Among the devices that have been tried unsuccessfully are flashing lights, air whistles, and electric buzzers.

A record 340 senior students with majors in mining and mineral engineering from 21 shcools in the US may be expected to enter a manpower-hungry mineral industry in 1975. While starting salaries may have been the deciding factor in job selection in the past, 1975 graduates will find salaries almost the same in most mining sectors. Meanwhile, the survival prospects of various mineral engineering schools had the usual ups and downs in 1974, but tightening state budgets could still take a toll in reducing the number of schools offering mineral engineering degrees. Two such schools on the endangered list include Montana College of Mineral Science in Butte, Mont., and the College of Mines, University of Idaho, in Moscow, Idaho.

What is the "best" copper smelting technology? When a future Agricola examines the development of copper smelting in the 20th century, he will be amazed at how little took place in the first half of the century and how much in the second. In a period when the technology of transportation, communications and chemical processing advanced many fold, copper smelting remained practically static. The result of tightening energy supplies and stringent environmental controls in recent years has been a spate of development activity that not only is challenging the supremacy of the reverberatory furnace, but threatens to wipe out pyrometallurgical techniques entirely.

Approximately 90% of all potash produced is employed as a fertilizer, either directly or with nitrogen and phosphorus. The remaining 10% is utilized in the manufacture of other chemical products. The original source of potassium was wood ash, however, today the term potash refers to all commercially important salts of potassium. The world's first potash mining operation commenced in Strassfurt, Germany, circa 1860, and since that time the industry has grown steadily to its present annual output of about 30 million tons of potassium chloride products or 18 million tons of Kg0 equivalent, potassium chloride or "muriate of potash" being equivalent to 63.1 % pure KPO.

THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known outcrops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. S. border. Steel mills are also located in the North, and finished products must travel 600 to 800 miles to the area of consumption in central Mexico. An unidentified, high-temperature microbe, which oxidizes reduced sulfur and iron in an acid medium between 45° and 75°C, is studied to determine its ability to leach copper sulfide minerals and molybdenite. Copper is leached from low-grade ore as well as a chalcopyrite concentrate, and preliminary data indicate a tolerance of 1.0 gpl copper by the microbe. A molybdenite concentrate is also biogenically leached, and the microbe is able to continue growth when the soluble molybdenum concentration is 750 ppm. Molybdenum can not be biogenically extracted from waste material using the present technique. Direct observation using SEM illustrates colonial growth and developmental characteristics of the microbe on molybdenite fines. The organism responds to hexavalent molybdenum by reducing this metal to the pentavalent state in aerobic and nitrogen gas atmospheres.

Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (de Bruyn, 1955; Fuerstenau, 1957; Somasundaran, 1964; Smith, 1973; Fuerstenau, 1976; and Smith and Akhtar, 1976) and alumina (Somasundaran, 1964; Smith and Akhtar, 1976; Fuerstenau and Palmer, 1976; Fuerstenau and Akhtar, 1976; Fuerstenau and Yamada, 1963; Modi and Fuerstenau, 1960) using various anionic and cationic heteropolar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these materials using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors (Wrobel 1969 and 1970; Smith. Haddenham, and Schroeder, 1973; Gupta and Smith, 1975) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors Cooke and Talbot, 1955; Somasundaran and Kulkami, 1973). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic, and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.

DISCUSSION, A. Y. Bethune presiding M. E. Wadsworth and W. M. Fassell (University of Utah, Salt Lake City)—The authors of this paper should be complimented on the experimental techniques they have employed to investigate the rate of solution of galena in sodium hydroxide solution. Studies of this type are important not only as a practical means of leaching normally non-leachable substances, but also to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface. There is some question, however, as to the conclusions which have been drawn by these authors concerning their proposed mechanism. Unfortunately, the contribution of OH- was not definitely established in their work, and concentrations less than 0.5 N NaOH evidently were not investigated. The pressure data at 123°C and 0.5 N NaOH were used to determine pressure dependency and the subsequent model proposed was taken as correct on the basis of the three points presented in Fig. 5 of the paper. About eighty miles north of the city of Antofagasta, Chile, located just below the Tropic of Capricorn, there spreads a wide desert area where copper oxide outcrops can be seen with the naked eye. Numerous old mining works and dump heaps with the green of atacamite and chrisocolla shining in the blazing sun, attest to the work done by miners in the beginning of this century. The dry desert air preserves the footstep marks, paths and trails of old cartwheels from years back. The mining area known as Michilla and Panizos Blancos, is located on the high plateau at 3000 ft above sea level. Around 1920 a Bleichert ropeway was built, which carried ores from the best known mine to a wharf at the Michilla bay. High grade silicious ores were shipped to the Gatico Smelter further north or to smelters in the United States or Japan.

Recovery of fine coal from solids reporting to wash water has become increasingly important. These solids range from about 28 mesh to 0 and constitute 3 to 7 pct by weight of the feed tonnage to a coal preparation plant. In the past they were usually wasted to streams, but present clean stream legislation makes it necessary to remove them from the wash water and, if economically possible, recover the associated coal as a saleable product. Where these solids are not wasted to streams or to slime ponds they are recovered by thickeners and filters. Since filter cake is often high in ash or sulfur, or both, it is not readily marketed or used. Common practice is to mix it with other plant products, generally slack or cleaned run-of-mine. Uniform blending is difficult, not only because the impurity is usually high, but also because during certain operating periods it is possible to get a concentration of this filter cake in a railroad or barge.

In airborne gravity surveys effects of acceleration and irregular movements of the aircraft must be balanced out or overcome. The gradient of vertical gravity is recorded, therefore, by using two masses instead of one. As the amplitude variations are infinitesimal and difficult to measure accurately, at present it is enough to determine whether variation of gradient during flight is positive or negative. The positive portions of the pattern can then be indicated and contoured. Even with these simplifications, the source of energy must be exceptionally stable. General Principles: In the conventional gravi-meter the weight of a standard mass is determined at a number of selected points within the survey area. Carrier flotation of anatase impurities from clay using oleate is compared in this study with conventional flotation. The role of relevant parameters such as carrier size, carrier amount, dissolved calcium and carbonate, conditioning speed, pH, time and temperature and collector concentration is investigated in order to elucidate the mechanisms involved in carrier flotation. Addition of coarse calcite particles is found to contribute towards the enhanced separation of anatase from clay mainly due to aggregation of anatase fines with calcite and the subsequent flotation of the aggregates.

In 1952, Hauffe and pfeiffer1,2 reported that parabolic rates of nickel oxidation are decreased by factors of two and four at 1100° and 1000°C, respectively, when Li2O vapor is present. Hauffe 's3 explanation was that monovalent lithium enters the crystal lattice of p-type NiO to decrease cation-vacancy concentration and, hence, diffusion of Ni2+ ions across the growing oxide. After first succeeding in adding lithium directly to molten nickel, the purpose of this investigation was to determine whether alloyed lithium is a more effective oxidation inhibitor than the external vapor. Seven 650-g heats were prepared by melting carbonyl nickel inductively under 1 atm of argon. Various amounts of lithium were added by dropping small chunks into the melt. Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 sq km) to small (100 sq km) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger-scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

T he Radon mine is in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County, Utah. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual pre¬miums were possible by clean mining. Complete extraction without loss of ore pillars, minimum ore dilution and high production per man were obtained by longwall mining.

RISSER] There is a tendency among laymen to relegate America's coal industry to Pennsylvania and West Virginia, completely overlooking-or unaware of- the vast reserves, both those developed and those untapped, situated in the 1.4 million square miles between the Appalachians and the Rockies. At the 1965 AIME Annual Meeting, Hubert E. Risser, Principal Mineral Economist of the Illinois State Geological Survey, presented an interesting picture of the wealth of mineral fuels occurring in that area. In his talk entitled "Trends in Mineral Fuels in the Central United States", Mr. Risser underscored the fact that "more than half of the nation's known reserves of each of the three major fuels-oil, gas and coal-lie within the Central area." The highlights of his speech, with emphasis on the coal situation, are excerpted below.
