John Dasher (Central Research Laboratory, Crucible Steel Co. of America, Pittsburgh. Pa.)— Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells. About 20 years ago, this writer obtained in the laboratory the flotation of over 90 pct of this spodumene in a King's Mountain sample in 1 min at a grade of 90 pct spodumene in the rougher and a final tailing that contained only 1 pct spodumene. The methods of Norman, Ralston," and Gieseke' were used, which teach that spodumene floats quickly and cleanly if its surfaces have been properly conditioned chemically and/or mechanically prior to flotation. Although feed preparation is not discussed, the results reported indicate that it is inadequate. This writer suggests that improvements in this area might be more effective than doubling the number of cells. W. E. Horst (author's reply)—Dasher's comments are appreciated by the author and require some clarification. He suggests that improved spodumene flotation performance may be obtained by feed preparation techniques rather than increased retention time in flotation. Certainly flotation performance is dependent on feed preparation and this is an important feature in the flotation process. It is true that certain types of spodumene ores, particularly weathered ores, require more complicated feed preparation processing than clean ores to achieve the desired flotation results. It was not implied that current feed preparation techniques are the same as experienced during the scale-up investigations. Although discussion of feed preparation was omitted from the article on scale-up relationships, the important feature was that pre-treatment processing was the same for each level of operation investigated— laboratory, pilot plant, and plant scale. Under these similar conditions large differences existed in recovery for comparable time intervals in each scale of operation. It is highly probable that feed preparation techniques could be modified and thereby increase the flotation rate for each scale or all scales of operation discussed. However, modifications would have to be justified on an economic basis.

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1942 was approximately 8600 bbl., a decrease of 6500 bbl. from the production of 1941, and the lowest since 1934. As usual, the greater part of the production was from the Mississippian limestone pools in Scott and Morgan Counties. Some half dozen wells in Fentress and Clay Counties pumped intermittently produced about 1000 barrels. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas respectively. Figures are not available for the Morgan County production but 7,378,000 cu. ft. of natural gas was produced in the Jamestown gas field from six wells. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table I. Developments Drilling activities reached the lowest ebb since 1933. Only 10 wells were spudded during the year, one of which was drilling on Dec. 31, 1942. Of the nine completions, two were gas wells in the proven area south of Jamestown in Fentress County and seven were dry holes. The total footage drilled during the year was 14,198 ft.; the average depth of wells was 1578 ft. The completions are listed in Table 2. The distribution of tests according to physiographic divisions is given in Table 3. East Tennessee.—One well was drilled to 4219 ft., the second deepest well in the state, in Campbell County. The test was in the highly disturbed Valley and Ridge Province, an area long considered the most unfavorable in the state for the accumulation of oil and gas. Cumberland Plateau.-—There were no completions in the Cumberland Plateau area, although an old well drilled deeper found oil from 935 to 965 ft. in the Mississippi lime. This test has created a considerable amount of interest in the area and an active leasing campaign was underway early in 1943. Eastern Highland Rim.—Five completions on the Eastern Highland Rim brought in two small gas wells in Fentress County, which will be used to augment the supply for Jamestown. The producing horizons are shaly limestones of Ordovician (Trenton) age. Two wells in this area were drilled to the upper part of the Knox dolomite group. The most significant test during the year was the Stanolind Oil and Gas Company's test in Putnam County. This well, on a well-defined surface structure, was abandoned in the upper Knox dolomite group at 2130 ft. A show of oil was logged in the Knox at 1653 to 1661 ft. Northern Highland Rim.—Three tests widely separated in the Northern Highland Rim were dry.

HAVING previously described the metals to you, before I proceed any farther I do not wish to fail to tell you, as I promised to do in the first chapter on metals, what I have learned through experience concerning the semiminerals, although this may seem to you outside our proposed subject. Since these are not produced by Nature as all rock or all metal they are called semiminerals by speculative physicians. Many kinds of these are found; those that resemble rocks are earthy, very difficult to liquefy, and much more adapted for adorning paintings than for anything else. Those that liquefy with fire, like sulphur, antimony, marcasite, [22] calamine, zaffre, manganese, and others, resemble the metals almost like brothers. Some others are more watery so that they dissolve in water, although they are fairly dense, and are obtained and reduced to their, perfection by means of water. These are the salts, vitriol, rock alum, and saltpeter. To these, as a watery thing, belongs also quicksilver, as it is commonly called because of its motion. Although it appears. not only liquid, but very liquid, this is not at all similar in its effects to any of the above. Indeed, it retains its same being until its very form is consumed. Since the reasons for its effects are almost impossible to investigate, I do not intend to speak of them here or to enter now this maze of speculation, because I wish to make definitely clear to you what this quicksilver really is. Therefore, leaving aside opinions and disputes, I shall take only those of the said semiminerals that I know are useful. First we shall see the method by which the semiminerals can be found and then how they are to be extracted from their matrices. These, perhaps, have no less need of effort and industry than the metals since they are substances completely hidden in the rocks or in the earth. For this reason some of these that are sought are made use of by means of fusion after they have been mined from their mother mountains, and some others need to be disposed by a certain maturative corruption, now with moisture and coldness, now with dryness and heat, as with waters, rains, frosts, or long baking in the sun, with fire, or even with a strong reheating within themselves. Most of them can finally be brought to the desired end by means of solution with water and fire.

(written discussion?).-My experience has been that, where possible, it is preferable for each foreman to employ his own men, rather than to have them handled through an employment bureau. The fact that each foreman comes into direct contact with the man before he is put to work gives him an opportunity to choose, at certain times, the kind and class of men that he wishes. Where possible, after a man is employed he is sent to a central office where a complete history of each individual is kept on a card. If a man has previously been in the employ of the Company, his history can be obtained from this card, and if for any reason he is not wanted he can be refused work at the time he reports to, the central office. In connection with Workman's Compensation costs, we in Wyoming feel that although the rates of compensation paid may in some cases be rather low our law works satisfactorily. As the State and the number of employees are small, compensation cases are handled through Judges of the various District Courts. In the State Treasurer's Department, a few clerks were added to look after the handling and issuing of warrants and compiling of statistics. Most of the large employers have an arrangement by which a joint claim and assent, specifying the amount of compensation due, is made tip by the employer and signed by the workman. This is forwarded, to the Judges so that personal investigation of individual cases is not necessary. In this manner, compensation is promptly received and' overhead expenses of operation of the law is kept at the minimum. The law requires each employer to pay into the State Treasury, for the benefit of the industrial fund, a sum equal to 1.5 per cent. of the money earned by each employee, engaged during each calendar month of such employment. Each employer contributes monthly, unless the sum heretofore contributed, after deducting all payments made on account of injuries to his employees, shall equal a full 1.5 per cent. of his annual pay roll, computed by multiplying his current monthly pay roll by twelve, and shall likewise be not less than ($5000). It has been found during the years that this law has been in effect, that a number of the larger employers have been exempt from payment for from five to eight months per year, so that in some cases, even in coal nines, industrial insurance has cost less than 0.75 per cent.

The German Kaiser is employing the keenest engineering talent of his own and allied empires in his attempt to defeat the world. American employers are paying engineers such attractive salaries that voluntary enlistments of high class technical men in the United-States Army, are below requirements. This deficiency is also probably due in part to the lack of proper information concerning the engineering branch of the service. Few civilians know that it is possible for them to perform in the Engineering Corps almost exactly the same kind of work as that in which they are now engaged. The best results in any organization are obtained only when the energy of every man in it is concentrated along the line for which he is best suited by natural ability, education, and training. It. is more important to have the right man in the right place in our Army, where lives of men are at stake, than it is in any business enterprise. The First Replace meat Regiment of Engineers was organized at Washington Barracks, D. C., on Dec. 14, 1917, with the express idea of accomplishing this. end. Its specific, purpose is to keep all engineering units of the Army at full enlistment strength during the period of this war. This regiment has not only the responsibility of finding men to fill depleted ranks, but it must also fit them to step into the work of trained, efficient and disciplined soldiers. The preliminary work of the recruit is first a thorough training in military drill, for the engineer soldier must be prepared to lay down his shovel and take up his rifle at any time. Infantry drills gradually give way to engineer work and more specific technical training. The. engineer soldiers must know how to tie knots and lashings, to build spar and truss bridges, to construct revetments, dig trenches, place wire entanglements, construct machine-gun emplacements, build pontoon bridges, and to construct roads: They must, also know the methods of demolition, sapping, and mining. Specialized training in lithography, zincography, surveying, mapping, photography, carpentry, blacksmithing, electricity, and machinery, are also given to those qualified for further training in any of these branches. Engineers are called upon to perform such a wide range of work that practically every man with any technical training or mechanical ability can find a place in this organization. Every male citizen in the United States who is physically fit, and between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 and 40, is eligible to join the regiment by voluntary enlistment.

We have made calculations to evaluate the sensitivity of atomic absorption as a technique to measure vapor pressure changes with temperature. Our conclusion, supported by the experimental findings presented in this work, is that the ultimate sensitivity of the technique is well below lo-' Torr. This magnitude of vapor pressure sensitivity makes the method extremely attractive for thermodynamic studies. Atomic absorption techniques have been used previously in this connection by Scatchard and Boyd' and by vidale2 with a much lower sensitivity reported. Scatchard and Boyd's work measured cadmium pressure over Ag-Cd alloys in the range 0.02 to 0.3 Torr, and Vidale estimated that sensitivities of only 10"5 to 10"6 Torr are to be expected. Atomic absorption appears to be particularly well-suited to thermodynamic studies for several reasons: A) It is extremely sensitive; our experiments indicate an ability to measure vapor pressure changes of 10"9 Torr. B) It is highly selective; there is seldom interference among the resonant wavelengths of the various species. C) It may be performed in an absorption cell under static conditions. This alleviates such problems as surface impoverishment of alloys, attainment of equilibrium, and temperature measurement and control. D) Simultaneous, or near-simultaneous, vapor pressure measurements may be made for several elements in a given system. Experimental. The physical basis of the technique is the highly selective absorption of particular wavelengths by specific atomic species. In most atomic absorption work the element of interest is incorporated into a hollow cathode lamp to provide a characteristic spectral source of high intensity. The spectra lines characteristic of the element in the cathode are attenuated by atoms of that element in the radiation path. Radiation from silver or cadmium hollow cathode lamps was directed along a path containing a 10-cm evacuated silica cell. The cell was positioned within a silica windowed furnace and contained silver, cadmium, or an Ag-Cd alloy. As the furnace temperature was elevated, the number of atoms of the absorbing element in the vapor phase within the cell rose, and the resonant radiation was increasingly absorbed. Intensities were measured by passing the radiation through a Techtron Model AA-4 one-half meter grating atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with a photo-multiplier detector. In order to minimize instabilities in the source, the hollow cathodes were allowed to warm up for several hours and were run at only 2 5 to 30 pct of their maximum rated amperage. In addition the attenuated beam was monitored before and after each reading. The attenuation of resonant wavelengths may be related to vapor pressure by the following relationships.

THIS paper is the second of a series on the effect of various elements on hot-working characteristics of Fe-C alloys to be issued by this laboratory. The investigations being conducted at the Ferroalloy Research Branch of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Redding, Calif., involve fundamental research on the effects of various alloying materials and impurities on the physical properties of high purity Fe-C alloys. This paper deals with the determination of the limit of forgeability of steels containing varying amounts of manganese and sulphur. A paper discussing the hot-working characteristics and the physical properties of the forgeable alloys is being prepared. One of the principal impurities in all steels is sulphur.. The phenomenon, hot-shortness, commonly attributed to sulphur, has long been a source of expense and inconvenience to both the maker and user of steels. In steelmaking practice, this effect of sulphur has been overcome by the addition of manganese which, apparently, acts as a desulphurizer. Manganese is also used as a deoxidizer and alloying material. The critical and strategic position of man- ganese gives added importance to research which may contribute to its conservation and more effective utilization. It is not the purpose or intention in the present paper to give any explanation of the mechanism of either hot-shortness or its prevention but rather to report the results of forging high purity Fe-C alloys of the range of compositions near the limit of hot-forgeability. Temperatures for each phase of reduction were duplicated within 20" to 30°F for all tests. The starting material was sponge iron, which, after melting and purification, gave a high purity iron containing about 0.001 pct each of silicon and phosphorus. Scrap iron was not considered suitable because of its high percentage of contaminants and wide variation in analyses. The sponge iron was melted and refined for melting stock in a three-phase, direct-arc, size ST, Moore Rapid Lectromelt furnace with a 500 kva rating as described in the preceding paper. Additives were carefully selected to avoid addition of contaminants. The sulphur was added as resublimed flowers of sulphur or purified roll sulphur of analytical grade. The manganese used was dehydrogenated high purity electrolytic material produced by the Bureau of Mines plant at Boulder City, Nev. High purity aluminum in the form of wire was used for deoxidation. The limestone was obtained locally and had the following analysis: CaO, 53.7 pct; MgO, 0.8; ignition loss, 42.4; R2O3, 0.2; SiO2,3.0; and P2O5, 0.014.

DURING recent months, the acute shortage of steel scrap has necessitated the use of higher percentages of hot metal in the open-hearth charge. With these higher percentages, the sulphur content of hot metal has become an increasingly important factor in the control of the quality of steel. Thus, the blast-furnace operator is faced with a demand not only for more output but for a higher quality of product. More than go per cent of the sulphur charged into the blast furnace is contained in the coke. With the tremendously increased demand, the trend of coke quality has been toward higher sulphur, higher and more variable ash, and poorer physical characteristics. This has been brought about by less selective coal mining, increased production rates in coke plants and resumption of operations of many beehive ovens. In a single month last year, one blast-furnace plant in the Pittsburgh district operated with coke obtained from 52 sources. The effect of variability and quantity of coke ash on blast-furnace operation is well known. The improved results obtained with furnaces operating on coke made from washed coals compared with results on coke made from raw coals is ample proof of the effectiveness of low and uniform ash. Coal-washing plants, however, require a large capital expenditure, and are impractical for most of the large number of small producers, whose operations are confined chiefly to periods of abnormally high demand. Furthermore, not all coals are physically adaptable to washing. PRINCIPLES OF IRON DESULPHURIZATION IN FURNACE Although investigations of the blast-furnace process have not clearly revealed the detailed mechanism of iron desulphurization within the furnace, they have been sufficiently extensive to permit a postulation of the following general principles: I. Iron, in its travel from furnace top to hearth, continues to pick up sulphur until it has reached tuyere level. The zone of iron desulphurization is relatively narrow, being confined to a vertical distance extending approximately from tuyere level to the iron-slag interface in the hearth.1 2. Combustion of coke is confined to spherical zones extending approximately 40 in. from the nose of each tuyere.2 Coke ash is released as the coke burns in these combustion areas. 3. With a constant amount of sulphur in the charge, the sulphur content of the metal product is a function of hearth temperature, final slag analysis, slag viscosity, and slag volume. Both hearth temperature and slag analysis affect slag viscosity. For a slag of constant analysis, viscosity always decreases with an increase in temperature;

Located 19 km (12 miles) north of the Carlin gold mine and 43 km (27 miles) north of Carlin, Nevada, is Carlin Gold Mining Company's Bootstrap mine. This deposit is similar in character to the Carlin ore, except it occurs in the upper plate formation of the Roberts thrust fault rather than in the lower plate rocks. The deposit was discovered over 50 years ago and operated on a small scale in the early 1960s using vat cyanide leaching. Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the property in 1967, and from an open pit mined 650,000 mt (717,000 st) of ore which was trucked to the Carlin conventional cyanide plant. (See Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice by F. W. McQuiston, Jr. and R. S. Shoemaker, Society of Mining Engineers, AIME, 1975. ) With the same grade of ore, the gold recovery by conventional methods is somewhat lower than that of the Carlin ore, even with a finer grind. Leaching tests were first conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1968; and in 1971, ‘72, Carlin conducted extensive cyanidation investigations by bottle testing, simulated heap leaching in tall columns, and small scale pad heap leaches. Gold extractions ranged from 55% to 95% with low reagent consumptions. In 1974, a 545 mt (600 st) heap leach test was made at Carlin on pit-run low-grade material assaying 1.37 g per mt (0.04 oz per st). In a six week period the extraction of gold was 47.57'0. Carlin uses atomic absorption analyses on cyanide leach liquors to determine potential leach ore grade rather than fire assaying because it gives a more practical assessment of leach recovery than does fire assaying, which accounts for the total gold content. Before open-pit mining was started, plans were made to heap leach, the ore at Bootstrap which was too low grade for transport to Carlin. The topsoil outside of the designed pit area overlaid ancient lakebed clays which were found suitable for compaction to form an impervious base on which the dumps to be leached could be placed. By using the cost of truck haulage and milling at the Carlin plant and the price of gold 'at that time, a cutoff grade was established which resulted in the gold content of the first 150,000 mt (165,000 st) of the heap leaching ore being 1.51 g per mt (0.044 oz per st). An additional 500,000 mt (552,000 st) of lower grade material, assaying 0.96 g per mt (0.028 oz per st), is available for leaching as economics permit.

IN the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more components that tend to form very stable oxides. Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others. In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken. If, however, it is required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible. Since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides. For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets. All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measurements and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve. From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material. Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties. NATURE AND REMOVAL OF SURFACE BARRIERS The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes.* In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 per cent Fe, 50 per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200°C. or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics. However, this early work showed clearly that something in the powder compress was inhibiting diffusion and the process was almost entirely unworkable. In the initial phase of the investigation samples of iron powder, nickel powder, and iron-aluminum alloy powder were pressed into separate bars and sintered in hydrogen. It is a well-known fact that magnesium-alloy castings are apt to be coarse grained if the melt is not superheated several hundred degrees above the melting point before casting. (The casting temperature varies according to the shape of the mold. A typical casting temperature is perhaps 1400°F.) British practice is to heat to 900°C. (1650°°F.) for 15 min., cool rapidly to casting temperature, and cast.1 In Germany superheating is carried out at 850° to 900°C. (1560° to 1650°F.) depending on the amount of scrap used. It is stated that further refinement will be obtained by prolonging the period of superheating or by increasing the superheat temperature to 950°C. (1740°F.).2 In the United States superheating is carried out at i600° to 1700°F. (871° to 927°C.), perhaps even higher in some places. It is stated that superheating effects are found as low as 1500°F. (816°C.), but several hours are required.3 These commercial treatments lead to grain sizes in sand castings that may vary from 4 to 8 grains per sq. mm.§ in heavy sections and from 60 to l00 in 3-in sections to perhaps 380 in thin sections. It is also generally known that the refining effect of superheating is lost if the melt is held for some time at lower temperatures before casting. Aside from these very qualitative statements, there is little to be found in the literature as to the effect of temperature and time of superheat on the final grain size. Because of the uncertainty of these factors, the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. This research, which was done under the "Restricted" Project NRC-550, is the basis of this paper, which has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. The material studied was an alloy prepared from carbothermic magnesium. The temperatures required for grain refinement proved to be widely different from those used in practice, as described in the statements in the first paragraph. This difference is attributed to the fact that the magnesium in the specimens was of carbothermic origin instead of the electrolytic magnesium in common use. MATERIALS AND METHODS The magnesium alloy studied was one of the most popular sand-casting alloys, with a nominal composition of 9 per cent aluminum, 2 per cent zinc, and 0.r per cent (minimum) manganese and the balance magnesium. It is suggested that the binary alloy systems of transition metals may be classified into groups according to "excess energy"E. For systems with positive ?E, the Laves phase, the TiNi3-, the TiCu3- and the Cudu-type rich in the smaller atom and the TizNi-type rich in the larger atom may exist. For systems with negative ?E and composed of two components of different crystal structures, the X, the Cr3O and the phase may exist on the side of the phase digrattz rich in the component with the higher "solubility factor" value am! the Cudu-type and the disordered hcp phase on the other side; if the crystal structure of two components is the same, the Cudu-type may exist on both sides. For systems with weakly positive ?E and cotnposed of different crystal structures, the u phase and the MgCd3-type may replace the Laves phase and the other types; the X, the Cr3O and the a phase may also exist. Finally, the equirnolar compounds of the CuAu- and the CsC1-type may exist irrespective of the sign of ?E. THERE are many factors which play a major role in the formation of binary intermediate phases in alloys, such as the crystal structure, the electronic structure, the atomic size and the electrochemical factor. To find the simultaneous effects of all these factors on the formation of intermediate phases of every metal would be a difficult task, especially because only a small fraction of experimental facts necessary for the complete formulation is known at present. Thus the past surveys of intermediate phases have been usually confined to few metals, several types of intermediate phases and some but not all controlling factors. In a previous paper1 the idea of "solubility factor" of metals was introduced. Although the suggested values are tentative and empirical, the formation of a continuous series of solid solutions in metals could be correlated with the interplay among the atomic size factor, the solubility factor and the crystal structure factor. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate qualitatively the interplay of these factors in the formation of binary intermediate phases among transition metals. FACTORS CONSIDERED The Crystal Structure Factor. With rare earths excluded, the transition metals are classified into three common crystal structures listed in Table I. There is arbitrariness in the present classification of several allotropic elements. INTRODUCTION The El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chi le has extracted 588 mil lion tons of ore in its 77 year history for a total copper output of 8.800.000 tons. The mine production has been obtained mainly by traditional block-caving where grizzlemen using a hand held lever send ore through long-raises to load trains. At present the mine is about to introduce mechanized block-caving using LHD equipment to extract the primary rock. This paper describes this method which will be tested starting next month by caving an 11.000 square meter block. THE PRIMARY ROCK PROBLEM The secondary enrichment sulfides of the El Teniente ore body have characteristics which makes a standard unmechanized block-caving practice very successful. In the 60's parts of blocks encountered primary ow in the Teniente 1 and Sub-13 levels which proved to be extremely hard to extract. These foretold the obstacles that arised in the central part of the Teniente 4 level. Preparation of a completely primary 8.100 square meter block started in 1970. Its undercutting was completed by the end of 1972 and by 1973 the problem of mining the primary rock was clearly visualized. The numbers below describe the difficulties in mining this block: -Long-hole drilling rate is 90 m (270 ft) per shift in secondary rock and 37 m (110 ft) in primary. - Undercutting which is completed in 9 shifts in secondary took 180 shifts in the primary block. - Average grizzlymen productivity in secondary is 250 tons per shift while in primary it is only 25-30 tons, both at 343 mm (13 1/2 in. ) grizzly opening. - Powder consumption for secondary blasting increased from 8 grams per ton in secondary to 84 in primary. - The protection pillar between the under- cutting and the production levels was 60% broken in primary while 20% is usual for secondary. - Extraction advanced 5 cm per day in primary while a 50 cm per day rate is the aver- age in secondary. This is the main reason that after 8 years this primary block has a 20% extraction. Secondary blocks take 1.5 to 3 years to complete their extraction. - 80% of the boulders in primary rock are larger than 343 m (13 1/2 in.) with 10-20 % of them larger than 3 meters. -Direct cost of production (preparation, undercutting, extraction and haulage), using the traditional block-caving design for secondary rock, increased 3.5 to 4 times when used in primary rock. The following indicators of Table 1 show the rock characteristics differences.

The test results in Mr. Taggart's paper will, I am sure, be recognized as a notable contribution, and of great assistance in the study of the performance of the Hardinge mill. I regret, however, being obliged to note that Mr. Taggart still retains. such confidence in the Kick-Stadler method of computing the ?relative mechanical efficiency" of crushing machines. The Rittinger-Kick graph submitted by Mr. Gates and the tests made at McGill University disclosed precisely the same fundamental defect in the Kick-Stadler theory. Consequently, I have been obliged to recalculate in terms of Rittinger surface units the results obtained in the 28 rock-crushing tests cited by Mr. Taggart, in order to find- out what the relative efficiencies really were. In order to show the large discrepancies between the Stadler and Rittinger R. M. R's, the most, efficient result disclosed by each method is represented by the number 100, and the R.. M. E.'s for the other tests have been recalculated on this basis. The results will be found in Table 1. Personally, I look forward to the time when we shall cease to talk about "relative mechanical efficiency" and merely refer to the "efficiency" of a crusher. All that is required to accomplish this is to agree on a standard method for determining the "crushing constant" of a given rock and a standard method for calculating the efficiency. The figures in the fourth column of Table 1 have been derived by assuming a constant of 2,000 for the quartzite crushed in the Yale tests. The Stadler method sometimes indicates changes in efficiency produced by, changes in operating conditions, as I pointed out in a paper describing rock-crushing tests made at McGill University. It is, however, not enough to determine that certain changes increase or decrease efficiency; surely it is equally important to determine the magnitude of these variations. By examination of Mr. Taggart's results, I have been obliged to conclude that the size of feed and amount of reduction greatly influence the Stadler R. M. E. figures, that they are positively misleading. It should be mentioned that since the majority of the tests have been made at the least efficient feed rates, and since, moreover, it is one of the evidently very important factors affecting efficiency, it is possible that different results might be obtained by a high-tonnage feed series, and that

THERMODYNAMIC properties of many high-temperature systems containing sulfur, such as slags, metal sulfides, and solutions of sulfur in liquid metals, have been studied by means of equilibration with known gas mixtures.'" This method presupposes a complete and accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic data for all possible components of the gas phase at high temperatures. However, a survey of the data available up to 1952 on the thermodynamics of gaseous sulfur species and compounds, by Richardson and Jeffes,' showed that there was considerable uncertainty in the values of the free energies of formation of S, SO, HS, and CS. In many cases, this uncertainty made it impossible to decide whether or not these species would form a significant proportion of the sulfur present in the gas phase in any given system. After the review by Richardson and Jeffes had been published, St. Pierre and Chipman6 measured, by an indirect method, the free energy of formation of SO. This also enabled a clear choice to be made among the three possible spectroscopic values for the dissociation energy of S2 into atoms10 thereby determining the free energy of formation of S from S2, and fixing the free energy of formation of HS more accurately" The main purpose of the present investigation was to measure the free energy of formation of CS, which was still in considerable doubt. For example, at 1600°C, it could be estimated to be +6 +25 kcal per mole,* most of the uncertainty being in the * Based on the dissociation energles of CS6 and S2,5 the heat of sublimation of graphite, and, the assumption that the entropy of formation of CS is the same as that of CO. value of the dissociation energy." A secondary purpose of the investigation was to determine more accurately the equilibrium sulfur pressures over dilute solutions of sulfur in carbon-saturated liquid iron. General Method Dilute solutions of sulfur in liquid iron, saturated with carbon, were brought to equilibrium at 1600" and 1800°C, with known gas mixtures consisting, initially, of A and CS2. After equilibrium had been reached, the melts were quenched and analyzed for sulfur. In the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more cornponents that tend to form very stable oxides. Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others. In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken. If, however, it is required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible. since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides. For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets. All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measuremerits and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve. From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material. Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties. Nature and Removal of Surface Barriers The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes.* In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 Per cent Fe, So Per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200°C. or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics. The student of steelmaking is all too well acquainted with the fact that in many instances he must deal with data that in graphical representation exhibit the property most desirable in bird shot. This is scarcely mystifying, since the effort to establish one variable as a function of another is usually hampered by the simultaneous operativeness of two or three other factors that may be important. A large part of arriving at relationships that have the pleasing self-consistency of, say, precise measurements of thermal expansion, consists of determining what factors must be held constant-—an even larger part usually consists of collecting data for which those factors have been so maintained. It is not intended to imply that functional relationships in the physical chemistry of steelmaking are hopelessly obscure; on the contrary, it is merely necessary to be undisturbed by marked deviation of some points from a curve that otherwise makes sense. A reaction mechanism suggested by such a curve may call attention to hitherto unsuspected factors operative in the origin of the deviating points, and thus permit another step to be taken in the direction of fuller understanding. It is proposed, therefore, to suggest several empirical relationships. Even though the approach is not always rigorous, deviations caused by simplifying assumptions appear to be too small to obscure a provisional It has been appreciated for some time that the carbon-oxygen reaction in liquid steel is highly important. For example, Körber et al.,' in introducing a summary of their extensive work on steelmaking reactions, said: "... the far-reaching and truly dominating action of carbon upon the metallurgical reactions will be especially stressed ..." In "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking"2 (hereafter BOHS, for simplicity), it is accepted repeatedly that the various slag-metal interactions are nearly always controlled by the carbon-oxygen reaction. Before further discussion of this reaction, however, it will be worth while to consider briefly the carbon-oxygen equilibrium. In BOHS (p. 483) it is stated that: When liquid iron is brought into contact with gases containing carbon monoxide it absorhs carbon and oxygen. Conversely the carbon and oxygen in the metal unite to form carbon monoxide which is evolved from the bath during the open-hearth boil or while rimming ingots are solidifying. . . . When the equilibrium pressure is one atmosphere the equilibrium-constant equation simplifies, on the assumption that the activity of each element is equal to its percentage, to a constant which has been so much used that it has acquired a special symbol m. where m = %C X %O

The symposium on production for the year 1941 contains few papers on the foreign situation. Rigid censorship prevails in various countries, as the question of the volume of petroleum supplies has become one of great strategic importance. This is even truer than in the last war, owing to greater mechanization of armies. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts from Circular to AutHORs In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the fol-lowing excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not de-terminable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. In classifying wells as to producing methods, enter all wells that are not "flowing" in the column headed "Artificial Lift." If possible, add footnotes to indicate whether the lift is "pumping," "gas lift" or "air lift."
