ark' observed some years ago that collector-coating reactions with xanthates and with fatty acids clearly follow paths parallel to those prescribed by the familiar mass-action law for reactions in dilute solutions. He proposed, therefore, the logical hypothesis that they are governed by the solubility-product principle. However, he went astray in the application of his proposal to collector coating by overlooking the fact that coating involves a heterogeneous reaction. A mistaken concept of the meaning of the word adsorption also entered. Wark thought that the concentration of metallic ion that must be used in setting up the solubility-product equation for the coating reaction was that which could be obtained by solution of the mineral. Since this is very low for sulphide ores, and since the amount of the collector ion necessary for coating produces an extremely low concentration, the resulting ion-concentration product, under conditions when coating occurs, is much lower than that which would indicate a saturated solution of the collector-coating compound. Hence he was forced to the position that the solubility product governing the coating is much smaller than the standard solubility product. To justify this position it was necessary to postulate a coating mechanism that did not obey the ordinary laws of chemical reaction. This Wark did by adopting the concept that adsorption is a property of matter, rather than merely a more or less ephemeral local concentration thereof. Thus he says (p. 142 of ref. I): "Adsorption is not a purely physical property of the solid surface, for the specific nature of the adsorbed molecule or ion is important." The result was that he destroyed the great potential utility of his postulate by tying it to this erroneous concept in the words (pp. 142, 143): "It will be obvious that the adsorption solubility product is less than the normal solubility product." The writers have found quantitatively in the case of galena and potassium ethyl xanthate, and semiquantitatively in the case of covellite and the same collector, that the coating reaction does follow the mass-action law to the extent that coating occurs when the ordinary solubility product of the coating compound is exceeded, and that coating does not take place under the reverse conditions. In the course of the investigation leading to the establishment of this fact it was necessary to work with xanthate concentrations so low (down to 0.0004 mg. per liter), that very long conditioning times, and bubble-contact times of as much as 16 hr. were necessary sometimes to follow the reactions. MUELLER and Knott' have reported that Ti2Cu has the Si2Mo-type (Cllb) structure. The lattice parameters of Ti2Cu and the positions of the titanium and copper atoms are given by them as follows: ao = 2.944A; co = 10.786A 6 atoms per unit cell: 2 Cu (a) 000; 1/2: 1/2, 1/2 4 Ti (e) 002; 1/2, 1/2, 1/2 + z 00 -2 ; 1/2. 1/2. 1/2- z where z = 0.341 We have found eight other binary compounds which appear to be isostructural with Ti2Cu. All of them involve the combination of a titanium group element with a copper group element or a titanium group element with palladium. The compounds and their lattice parameters are given in Table I. The alloy samples were prepared by arc melting metals having a purity of 99.9 pct or better. They were homogenized for 72 hr at 900°C in evacuated capsules and quenched in tap water. Filings were prepared, and these were reannealed for 4 hr at 700°C, also in evacuated tubes. The lattice parameters were determined by a least squares Bnalysis of the back reflection lines of patterns made with cobalt radiation. It was not possible to make a precise determination of the lattice parameters of Zr2Au because the filings underwent rapid oxidation at room temperature. The evidence supporting the large tetragonal cell containing 6 atoms involves the presence of the reflections 002, 101, 004, 112, 114, 202, and other reflections with higher indices for which I = 3n. Three or more reflections corresponding to these indices, which cannot be indexed on the basis of a small body-centered tetragonal cell containing 2 atoms, are observed in the patterns of all of the compounds listed in Table I. They are strongest and most numerous when the components have large differences in their atomic scattering factors, as is the case in Ti2Pd, Zr2Cu, and Hf2Cu. The values of the z parameter should be regarded as approximate They were selected on the basis of the best agreement between the observed intensities of two pairs of closely spaced powder pattern lines (004): (112) and (114): (202) and the corresponding intensities calculated for several values of z. An ordering scheme was assumed in which titanium, zirconium, or hafnium atoms occupy the titanium positions of Ti2Cu, and copper, silver, palladium, or gold atoms occupy the copper positions. Calculated and observed intensities of the aforementioned lines and the other lines of the patterns are in satisfactory agreement, but a refinement of the z parameters and a final confirmation of the ordering arrangement must await a more detailed study. BARITE (BaSO4) is the most important industrial barium mineral from the standpoint of quantity consumed. In 1938 the amount was 365,000 tons. Its uses are numerous, some of the more important being in the production of pigments, as an inert filler in a wide variety of products, as a weighting material in oil-well drilling muds, in the manufacture of some kinds of glass, and in the production of barium chemicals. The barite studied in this investigation occurs as the massive variety in a shale replacement formation near Magnet Cove, Ark. It is intimately mixed with quartz and small amounts of iron oxide and residual shale. Complete liberation of barite and quartz is not obtained when the rock is ground to 100 per cent through 325 mesh. The crude rock with which all test work was done assayed 85.1 per cent BaSO4, 11.11 per cent Si02, and 2.85 per cent R203. Its specific gravity was 4.03. It was found in the course of the investigation that the barite contained a small amount of uniformly distributed carbonaceous material, so intimately dispersed that it could not be seen with the microscope, but gave a definite gray cast to the barite concentrates. The color of the barite in polished sections of the crude rock ranged from gray to almost black, while finely ground powder ,was a reddish gray. The reddish hue was due to the iron oxide present. In 1939, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston,* the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Milwhite Company, of Houston, Texas, undertook to study the flotation of barite from Magnet Cove, Ark. Flotation of several southern barite ores had already been investigated by the Bureau of Mines.' The Magnet Cove barite was unique, however, in that it had to be ground to such an extremely small particle size for liberation. The flotation of nonmetallic minerals in the presence of a large amount of slime is usually very difficult, and when done is an innovation calling for conditions different from those under which granular material is separated. LABORATORY FLOTATION WORK Preliminary investigation showed that the flotation reagents recommended by O'Meara and Coe1 for separating barite and siliceous material were suitable, but much larger quantities of reagents were required to separate such finely divided material. Moreover, it was found that careful control of the frothing was necessary. When oleic acid and sodium silicate were used a voluminous froth was observed at the beginning of a test, and toward the end there was not enough froth to effect complete recovery of barite. The addition of pine oil as a frother gave proper frothing for the duration of the test, and the substitution of coconut fatty acid (crude lauric acid) for oleic acid produced a more heavily burdened froth. THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remain¬ing to schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Let us take first the case of the mine-design type of course, having to do with layout of underground workings. Here it would seem that logical

Although hydrogen has been intensively studied in its relation to steel quality, the methods of sampling and determinations are still open to question. It is true that various procedures have been proposed but actually there has not been sufficient agreement to establish a common base from which to work. As a result, it is difficult, to say the least, to correlate the reported results of some of the investigators in this field. The present symposium, premised on methods rather than effects, should prove of considerable value. For the purpose of this discussion two methods of sampling and analysis will be considered. First, sampling of molten steel in the ingot mold by use of an evacuated tube and cylinder using conventional methods of analysis for the gases collected; second, analysis by vacuum extraction involving the use of heating equipment and the determination of the amount of hydrogen evolved from solid steel samples by measurement at reduced pressures. Both methods have been used at Duquesne Steel Works and it is believed that either may be used with considerable benefit if the limitations of each method are recognized. Evacuated Tube and Cylinder Sampling devices for gases in molten steel suggested by various investigators range from very cumbersome and complicated devices to the relatively simple evacuated tube and cylinder used by Soler for deter- mining the CO content of the bath. This latter device was adopted (Fig. I) and modified to meet conditions at Duquesne Works. The principal modifications were in placing the cylinder at the side of the tube and the use of a sleeve on the immersion end of the tube. The first modification was made so that the cylinder could be readily detached and taken to the laboratory; the second, because of the difficulty encountered in obtaining an airtight seal after sampling and because of our practice of re-using the tube. Rigid control of the method of sampling and of the handling of the sample according to plan are of primary importance in hydrogen determinations. This applies to both the sampling of molten steel and the determination of the hydrogen content of cold steel samples. Except for a few preliminary samples taken from spoons, all work on molten steels using the evacuated tube was confined to the sampling and analysis of molten steel during the pour. As mentioned, uniformity of sampling was a basic consideration. As a result, every effort was made to follow definite sampling techniques and procedures. These included control of the depth below the surface from which the sample was taken, the timing between the shutoff and taking of the sample, as well as maintenance and care of the equipment. The distance below the surface at which the sample was taken was readily controlled bv means of a crosspiece and centering device attached to the tube. SOUTH AFRICAN MILLING PRACTICE All modern South African gold plants operate primarily on the principle of exposing the gold particles in the ore by fine grinding and then cyaniding the total pulp. Although there are minor variations and occasional depart- ures from established practices among the fifty gold mines in South Africa, the normal plant operations proceed as follows. After removal of waste rock by hand sorting (15Y0 on average) the ore is crushed in cone crushers to minus 1/2 inch and then ground to approximately 75% minus 200 mesh by milling with either rod, ball or pebble mills as primary units and pebble mills for the secondary grind. Classification in both circuits is almost invariably conducted with 20" cyclones of 30" or larger diameter. Gravity concentration in the milling circuit followed by barrel amalgamation of the concentrates is practiced in 70Y0 of the plants, particularly where the ore grade is high. A slightly better overall recovery is obtained than with direct cyanidation, but additional handling is involved. Johnson cylinder s , plane tables or belt concentrators, all lined with suitable types of molded rubber riffles, are used for this purpose. At all mines, cyanidation is the main process, usually conducted by continuous treatment in Pachuca tanks and pulp separation with rotary drum filters. Cyanide solutions contain about 0.0 1570 NaCN and require a protective alkalinity of 0.02070 CaO. Precipitation of the gold from cyanide solution is exclusively by zinc dust and lead nitrate using the Merrill-Crowe system in conjunction with Stellar pressure filters. The zinc precipitate is smelted, generally after a preliminary concentration by sulfuric acid, in electric furnaces, mostly submerged arc types, with a silica and borax flux, yield- ing a bullion of 8870 gold, 9% silver, and 370 base metals. The gold content of the ore varies between 0.20 and 1.0 oz Troy per short ton and extraction efficiency ranges from 9570 to 9870. In general, 4070 of the gold output is recovered by amalgamation and 6070 by cyanidation; but in some cases, it is entirely by cyanidation. Flotation has not been adopted for gold extraction as it has not proved as efficient as cyanidation. It is, however, often applied to ores containing higher than 1% sulfur for the recovery of pyrite for sulfuric acid production. On the eastern side of the Witwaters rand Basin, "run-of -mine milling” was introduced in 1960 and in three of the four mills in this area both sorting and crushing have been eliminated. The ore received from the shafts is conveyed to storage silos and then fed by Williamson automatic feed controllers to pebble mills ranging from 12 to 14 feet diameter, and 16 to 20 feet long. The pebble mills operate in closed circuit with 42 inch cyclones and the slime produced is thickened and cyanided in the conventional manner. No selective

NINETEEN states have on their statutes laws requiring engineers practicing within their borders to be licensed sixteen other states have such laws under consideration. While mining engineers are not specifically referred to in every case, they are referred to by implication. In only a few states have mining engineers taken any active interest in this subject, either in support or in opposition, yet it is a matter of very grave importance to them. By some it is thought that it is now too late to take any active steps toward preventing or repealing a type of legislation for which there appears to be a growing demand from some source. And it is further thought that the best course for those who are interested is to endeavor to guide legislation so that the remaining states may enact laws containing as few objectionable features as possible.

THE Leadville tunnel, a Bureau of Mines project designed to unseal Colorado's rich but flooded lead, zinc, and manganese mines, is still being advanced, although the work is encountering severe difficulties. Work on the tunnel, begun in 1943, was dropped for lack of funds in 1945, and started again last September. The tunnel is one of the nation's toughest mining jobs. Fifty firms and individuals, who were asked to bid on the job of continuing be- yond the 6600-ft mark, didn't even answer. The work was finally taken over by the Utah Construction Co. of Salt Lake City. Since last September, the face has been moved 1000 ft closer to the flooded Leadville district mines, and to the hoped-for length of 17.300 ft. Some apparent success has already been noted, with an unusual decline in the water level in some major mine shafts reported this winter.

THE aftermath of a world war brings up a number of economic problems for the consideration of all thinking and patriotic citizens. The solution of the problems which confront the country at this time cannot well be accomplished by reference to past experience, for such conditions as confront us today have not existed in the past. We must, therefore, in any attempt to solve the present problems, rely to a great extent upon a careful analysis of present conditions to determine what is wrong; and after this is determined, seek the remedy and apply it. It needs no argument to establish the fact that, in the effort to win the war, the cost of so doing, and the waste in connection with it were, to a large extent, lost sight of; and this situation caused high wages, high cost of all materials, and of food supplies.

An extended investigation by the chief engineer of the Bureau of Mines shows that North Dakota has immense beds of lignite. War conditions have stimulated the use of North Dakota lignite until it is now being used at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually. This North Dakota lignite is coming into extensive local use and considerable of it is being shipped to various parts of the state. The great problem at the present time is to find a market for the gas, which is the principal-by-product of lignite preparation. Bureau of Mines specialists will complete their reports of the studies of lignite in this country and will then make a recommendation as to the lignite field which is best suited for the establishment of the proposed Government's experimental plant. "Broken eggs cannot be mended."-(Lincoln.) Neither can "cashed in" War Saving Stamps grow to their maturity value.

The research project on size reduction, sponsored by the mining industry through financial support from individual companies, is now embarking on a second three-year program. The first 3-year program had as its objectives assimilation of the literature on comminution and development of simulation programs encompassing the basic mechanisms of grinding. This involved investigating conditions under which a particle in a mill is captured, the stress to which it is subjected, its break probability, and the resulting particle size distributions. The results were used to obtain the most representative simulation models based on current knowledge of mechanisms. As part of this work a set of computer programs has been developed for the following cases: . Batch mill, by numerical integration for completely general selection and breakage functions. . Continuous open-circuit mill by same method as above. . Continuous open-circuit mill by general numerical integration method, including transient behavior

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING CONGRESS This Congress will be held under the auspices of five National Engineering Societies, of whi h the Institute is one. The sessions will be held in 11 sections and the proceedings will be published in 10 volumes of 500 pages each, of which Volume 8 will contain the papers and proceedings on Mining Engineering and Metallurgy. The membership fee of $5 will entitle the holder to the volume of General Proceedings and Index, and, in addition thereto, any other single volume chosen. Other volumes may be subscribed for according to a sliding scale depending upon the number of volumes taken. The Institute will have a meeting in San Francisco during 1915, and it is desirable for our members to join the International Engineering Congress at in early date in order that their support of the enterprise may be given in its early stages, when it is most needed.

MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES The Missouri Mining Association has enjoyed a very good year. Last October the society was reorganized and the following officers elected for the year: E. Ross HOUSHOLDER, President, ORE N. MANESS, Vice-president, WILLIAM REBER. Secretary, RUAL CHAVEZ, Treasurer. The head of our mining department, Prof. C. E. Forbes, is now serving as a Major in the United States. Army. We were fortunate in having. Prof. Chas. E. Locke, of Boston, with us for part of the winter to take charge of the senior mining work. During the autumn and winter months we had a number of informal smoker lectures in Norwood Hall. Among the speakers at these meetings were: H. A. Buehler, Missouri State Geologist; Chas. E. Locke, Boston, Mass.; V. H. Hughes, Tulsa, Okla.; Dorsey Lyon, Washington; D. C.; Prof. G. H. Cox, Professor of Geology, Rolla, Mo.; together with a number of returned alumni.

A special meeting of the Board of Directors was held on July 25, 1916, pursuant to notice duly given according to the By-Laws. This special meeting was for the purpose of giving authority for the signing of a contract with the American Society of Civil Engineers, as mentioned in another place in this Bulletin. The interest in the matter is indicated by the attendance of 11 members of the Board, some of whom came from a long distance. An invitation was received from the St. Louis Section of the Institute and from members in and near St. Louis to hold the 115th Meeting of the Institute in and near St. Louis in late September or early October, 1917. This invitation was accepted. Announcement was made that the Mexican Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had been dissolved and reorganized as the Mexican Section of the Institute.

Anaconda's Jackpile uranium mine is a multi- million-ton open pit sandstone deposit, producing some 3000 tpd for the company mill. With minor exceptions, the orebody is in equilibrium, and the backbone of ore-grade control is the radiometric assay, which fortunately is dependable. Preparatory Sample Drilling: Before it is stripped, the orebody is diamond-drilled on 200-ft centers N-S and 100-ft centers E-W. Drill core is logged, split, and assayed radiometrically, and several samples are assayed chemically to check the equilibrium status. This information establishes the pit outline and the first rough estimate of ore. After stripping, diamond drill data is supplemented by rotary drillholes on 50-ft centers. Dry chip samples, collected every 2 ft, are prepared and assayed radiometrically at the mine. Details of the orebody are then available for study, and the basic mining plan is drawn up.
