AN isopachous map is one on which lines connect points of equal thickness of a given unit. This type of map is used by the Florida Phosphate Project of the U. S. Geological Survey to represent the economic phosphate deposits known as matrix and the waste material, or overburden, that overlies the matrix. The top of the bed on which the phosphate was deposited is known as the basement and a subsurface contour map of this old buried erosion surface is known as a basement map. Recent experiments have been made in preparing maps that show tonnages and grades of the phosphate content of the matrix.

During 1972, Asarco's Silver Bell Unit embarked upon a project to test a digital computer-controlled grinding circuit against the performance of its other five grinding lines. The planning, implementation, and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pittsl, et al. This paper will describe the solutions to major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines. As an energy source, lignite is short on selling points-it contains large amounts of moisture and often large amounts of ash, resulting in low heat content. The moisture produces rapid oxidation upon exposure and self-ignition commonly occurs within two to three weeks, resulting in major transportation and storage problems. Nevertheless, as interest in alternate fuel sources increases, lignite deposits in the Coastal Plain of the US are attracting more and more attention. Two lignite mines are operating in Texas and additional developments are planned in that state, Arkansas, and Louisiana. At present, Texas lignite is burned only at mine-mouth generating facilities, but more exotic uses such as gasification are projected in the future.

Dispersion-containing titanium-copper alloys were prepared having mean free paths varying from 1.0 to 9.7 P. Tensile studies at room temperature and at 1000°F showed that little or no strengthening occurred when the mean free path exceeded 3 p. The tensile strength of moist agglomerates consisting of granular materials is demonstrated with the aid of models. The applicability of these models is proved by experiments. An explanation of the different values of strength of imbibed and drained agglomerates is given and it is shown that the maximum tensile strength occurs at the so-called entry suction. The entry suction, which can be considered as the characteristic capillary pressure of the agglomerates, is described in terms of its parameters by a dimensional analysis. The influence of porosity is determined experimentally by means of regressional analysis and is compared with known model equations.

The discovery of oil in the Powder Wash stricture in northwestern Colorado late in the fall of 1936 is the most important development in Colorado since oil was first discovered in the Moffat dome in the same county in 1923. The Powder Wash structure gives promise of developing into an oil and gas field of major proportions and is of particular interest because the oil was found in Tertiary rocks of Eocene age, which heretofore had been productive in the Rocky Mountain region of gas only, and very few of the many structures of this kind have been tested because it was believed that oil production probably would be confined to rocks of Cretaceous age only, and these were, in most instances, at excessive drilling depths. The influence of dissolved oxygen and the Pt - Pt-O reaction on the measurement of redox potentials in solutions containing ferrous-ferric couple was examined. Current-potential curves were used to illustrate the shift in measured potentials toward the oxygen potential in oxygenated and deoxygenated systems at low concentrations of ferrous and ferric ions. The ranges of concentrations of the ferrous-ferric couple, in which the interference from oxygen and the platinum-oxygen reactions becomes significant, are illustrated through the mixed potential mechanism.

The method of interactive dimensioning is based on the computation of the loading-deformation curves caused by country rocks on the pillars with numerical methods. The comparable loading-deformation curves of pillars with different shapes are determined with small-scale model tests in a servo-controlled testing machine. The equilibrium points, i.e. the stability of the different pillar-country rock systems are determined by matching these curves adequately scaled. A case from a Finnish mine is presented together with the stoping results.

Some months ago I heard from a party of returned tourists an amusing story of a Chinese laundryman in the National Park who had included in his cabin a hot spring, of which he was accustomed to avail himself in his business, and who, on one occasion, having thrown a lot of linen into this spring to soak overnight, had added a piece of soap to facilitate the process, and had been considerably surprised when, stimulated by this soap, the spring had suddenly become a geyser and wrecked his establishment. The story went on to say that the practice of "soaping" geysers to make them, active had become general, but had been forbidden by the authorities.
