CIRCULAR steel sets have proved to be more economical for supporting slusher drifts in the block-caving mining used by the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz. The first steel sets were installed in July 1950, and up to July 1, 1951, about 474 sets (approximately 1896 ft of drift) were placed; the bulk of this work was done in the latter six months. All of the places selected for the steel were in heavy ground. Based on this experience the following definite conclusions can be drawn:

It has been discovered that gold can be extracted from alkaline cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines by adding certain Lewis base modifiers, such as organic phosphorus oxides. Under these circumstances, gold can be extracted at about pH 10, commensurate with the pH of cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for Au(CN)[2] over other metal-cyanide complexes is discussed. Potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are also discussed.

L. S. BUSCH—We have had presented two methods of measuring these variations in powder compacts. E. OROWAN—Tn connection with the rolling mill research work carried out at. the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, with the help of the British Iron and Steel Research Association. Dr. E. A. W. Hoff, Mr. J. Los, and myself, have determined coefficients of friction at ex- treme pressures for a number of liquid and solid lubricants, both by direct measurement, and by calculation from measured values of the roll force. The most efficient lubricants at these high pressures (for the small amounts of sliding that, occur in rolling) were camphor and. in particular, borneol (Borneo-camphor). Perhaps such lubricants could be used with advantage in the kind of work described by Dr. Wulff. L. S. BUSCH—1 think Dr. Wulff has in the past mentioned experiments which have been performed in the extrusion and rolling of metals and which led to conclusions which can be applied to the compacting of metal powder. The plan recently started for the organization of a Division of Re-search and Statistics in the American Petroleum Institute will probably shortly be consummated. It is proposed to expend $500,000 annually for this research work. The organization's work, as now outlined, pro-vides for a Technical Director, who is to be in general charge of all the work. He is to be assisted by Consulting Technical Experts, who are to be distinguished specialists in the industry and are to serve without pay. In addition, there is to be an advisory committee made up of one representative from the Bureau of Standards, Bureau of Mines, Geo-logical Survey, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engi-neers, Society of Automotive Engineers, National Automobile Chamber, of Commerce, American Society for Testing Materials, American Chem-ical Society, and the National Research Council. This committee is to meet regularly to discuss the problems of the petroleum industry. An engineer and chief economist are to assist the Director.- The econ-omist is to be in charge of statistics, economic phases of the industry, and publicity. It is the intention to centralize in the Institute all infor-mation that may be required by the States or Federal Government, which would be of value to members of the Institute. This includes prices of crude oil, refined products, and natural gas. THE Manual of the Oil and Gas Industry, under the Revenue Act of 1918, published by the Treasury Department for the guidance of oil companies in preparing their estimates of future recoverable oil for the purpose of calculating depletion, gives the first large public collection of comparative decline curves for the whole country. It is a matter of both scientific and practical interest to so arrange these data that the pools can be readily compared. There are certain difficulties in such a comparison, however: 1. The economic limit varies from 50 to 2000 bbl. a year in different pools taken. (2) Because of this variation in economic limit, the range of data shown makes comparison possible only for wells of intermediate size. In order to be as inclusive as possible, I have taken as an expression of the rate of decline the amount of oil produced in the period during which a well drops from 3000 to 2000 bbl. a year.. No period of smaller production could be used because of the high economic limit in California; and no period of larger production and yet include the small well areas of the Appalachian. As it is, the Lima-Indiana wells are excluded. In a few instances, curves were extrapolated to obtain the reading, where the curve seemed regular enough to warrant it. In general, the amount of oil, in barrels, produced while a well declined from 3000 bbl. to 2000 bbl. a year is shown in Table 1.

HENRY FAY, Cambridge, Mass. (written discussion *).-Mr. Rawdon has made a distinct contribution to our knowledge of wrought iron, and .perhaps of steel. It will undoubtedly lead to more careful scrutiny of high-phosphorus steels, with perhaps important results. In view of his results, it would seem to be unprofitable to push further any propaganda on the use of higher-phosphorus low-carbon steels until further information is available. As is well known, and as Mr. Rawdon clearly shows, the process of solidification is a selective one, and there is abundant opportunity for those portions of the melt last to solidify to become rich in phosphorus, and the diffusion of this phosphorus-rich area is slow. Hot work does not help the situation appreciably and only serves to concentrate the low-melting material. It is undoubtedly true, as some writers have recently claimed, that the specifications for steels as they. now exist eliminate some perfectly good material. Higher phosphorus in steel may be perfectly safe provided all of the phosphide is completely and uniformly, diffused in the solid solution. If, on the contrary, it is not evenly diffused, and there is a reasonable chance for it not to be, it makes the steel unsafe. Until our knowledge: of the rate of diffusion of phosphorus in steel, and the effect of other elements upon the rate, is more complete, it seems to me unwise, in view of Mr. Rawdon's experiments, to listen to the recommendations for the use of higher-phosphorus steels.

On request of the Commissioner of Education, a small group of administrative professors of engineering and commerce from higher institutions near St. Louis met in conference with the Specialist in Commercial Education of the Bureau of Education on Feb. 22, for the purpose of discussing ways and means whereby the business of our country may be furthered through increased opportunity in our higher institutions for the preparation of engineers with business training. One or more representatives were present at this conference from the University of Minnesota, University of Illinois, Washington -University, University of Missouri, University of Iowa, Iowa State College, University of Kansas. It was recommended at this conference: First, That the Commissioner of Education appoint immediately a committee to consider commercial engineering in its various aspects and to prepare and approve one or more curricula in commercial and industrial engineering that can be recommended by the Bureau of Education for adoption in our colleges and universities. It was suggested that the committee consider the following curricula plans: First, That a minimum number of hours in business training be required in all engineering courses. Second, That a curriculum providing for a minimum of fifteen to thirty units in business economics be incorporated in all engineering courses and offered on an elective basis. Third, That a curriculum in commercial or industrial engineering, permitting full and proper emphasis upon engineering subjects, be offered in the School of Commerce with degree to be given in that school. Fourth, That a five-year combined engineering and commercial course he prepared.

In 1910, he was with the Hidalgo Guadalupe, Pachuca, Mexico, and in 1911 was engineer with the Gualcola Mines Co., at Tuquerres, Colombia. In 1913, he returned to the Sout.hwest, and was employed for that yea.r by the Inspiration Cons. Copper Co. at Miami, and in the middle of the following year he became engineer with the Detroit Copper Co., at Morenci. In the autumn of 1914, Mr. Reece, stirred by his English blood, resolved to return to England to take part in the war. At this time he wrote "I think it will be better for me to resign my membership. If I come through all right, I will apply for re-election." The Institute, however, instead of accepting Mr. Reece's resignation, voted him an indefinite leave of absence, and this precedent soon crystallized into the regular procedure, now in force, of remitting the dues of members in active service. On Dec. 17, 1914, he wrote from Montreal that he fully expected to go over shortly in the second contingent from Canada, with Borden's Armored Brigade, operating with armored motor cars. As he said "this will be active enough service to satisfy any enthusiast, as they are used generally for reconnaissance duty." Soren Ringlund Soren Ringlund died suddenly on July 24, 1918, at Fort Logan, Colo., where he was engaged in service with the Medical Department of the U. S. Army. Mr. Ringlund was born in Denmark in 1875. He came to the United States in 1902, and became a citizen in 1908. He graduated as

INTRODUCTION Current design practices for deep tunnels make extensive use of plasticity solutions by Newmark (1970) and Hendron and Aiyer (1971). These solutions are applicable to a circular tunnel subjected to a hydrostatic stress state in a Mohr-Coulomb plastic medium. The role of rockbolts is introduced into these solutions as a uniform internal pressure equivalent to the yield stress of the rockbolt pattern. The application of these solutions is hampered by their inability to consider the biaxial nature of the in-situ stress field or any surcharged stress, such as due to blast loading. As a means of considering the biaxial stress field, designers have turned to relatively costly alternatives, such as the finite element method. The recent work of Detournay (1983) simultaneously provided two generalizations to the state of the art of the analysis of circular tunnels. Whereas the solution of Newmark applies to nondilatant Mohr-Coulomb materials, and that of Hendron and Aiyer applies to materials having associated flow rules, the solution of Detournay covers materials of arbitrary dilatancy. Secondly, Detournay's solution is valid for biaxial stress states, as long as the problem remains statically determinate (St. John, Detournay, and Fairhurst, 1984). The topic of this paper is an investigation of various alternatives for introducing the effects of rockbolts into simple tunnel design charts developed using Detournay's solution. The study was conducted using the BMINES finite element code, into which rockbolt elements have been added (St. John and Van Dillen, 1983). A plasticity theory for anisotropic geologic media has been applied to the problem of quasi-static wedge penetration of rock under confining pressure. Numerical evaluation of the governing system of stress equations in the transversely isotropic and orthotropic cases using representative material properties shows that the consequences of initial anisotropy for the penetration process are by no means trivial. In the transversely isotropic case, a threefold increase in the vertical force required for penetration to a unit depth occurs as the inclination of the axes of anisotropy are rotated through 90° with respect to the penetration path. The horizontal force required varies from zero to a maximum at approximately 60° then back to zero as the axes of anisotropy are rotated. The maximum is of the order of magnitude of the force required in the isotropic case. Similar results are observed in the orthotropic case. Practical aspects of the post-elastic phenomena associated with anisotropic rock indentation within the context of drilling problems include: bit yaw, hole deviation and bending stresses in the drill rod, all of which vary with strata dip but which can be quantitatively evaluated given the bit geometry, interface friction and rock properties. In a broader context, the analysis reveals the necessity for well conceived experimental work and sound theoretical research concerning post-elastic behavior of geologic media as a function of confining pressure, the effects of induced anisotropy, and the variation of strength parameters with loading path changes in the post-elastic range.

At the close of the current academic year, there will be eight vacancies to be filled in research graduate assistantships which are maintained by the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois. In addition to these assistantships, there are available two research graduate assistantships in gas engineering, which are supported by the Illinois Gas Association. These assistantships, for each, of which there is an annual stipend of $500 and freedom from all fees except the matriculation and diploma fees, are open to graduates of approved American and foreign universities and technical schools who are prepared to undertake graduate study in engineering, physics, or applied chemistry. An appointment to the position of Research Graduate Assistant is made and must be accepted for two consecutive collegiate years, at the expiration of which period, if all requirements have been met, the degree of Master of Science will be conferred. Not more than. half of the time of a Research Graduate Assistant is required in connection with the work of the department to which he is assigned, the remainder being available for graduate study.

As air-pollution regulations become increasingly more stringent, increased significance is being placed on the amount of sulfur present in coals used for steam generation. These regulations are aimed at minimizing the pollution of the atmosphere with noxious gases such as the sulfur oxides that are formed and emitted when coal is burned. Two meet these future requirements, a definite need exists to reduce the sulfur content of some of the coals used for steam generation. Reducing pyritic sulfur involves liberating the pyrite from the coal and then removing it. The specific gravity of pyrite is high (5.0) compared to that of coal (about 1.2, mineral-free), and standard coal-washing devices, such as wet concentrating tables, will efficiently remove pyrite particles larger than about 100 mesh. Particles below this size will be entrained in the table water and will be carried into the clean coal product. Techniques such as froth flotation are of little benefit for pyrite reduction because the flotation characteristics of pyrite are similar to those of coal.

An elaborate model for the magnetite distribution and genesis in the Smallwood mine, Labrador, based on factor analysis with orthogonal and oblique rotation of the factors, was proposed in an earlier paper. However, it is implicit in that model that variances of one variable shared with all others (communality) are estimated. To avoid the problem of communality estimation in the present investigation, a different type of factor analysis is used which (1) emphasizes the shared variances, and (2) attempts to eliminate, as much as possible, errors associated with the estimation of communality and sampling (unique variance). The samples for the present analysis are not the commonly employed oxide percentage variables, but counts of mineral species in specified areas of thin sections from drill core in the Smallwood mine: quartz, magnetite, calcite, and specular-hematite minerals. The counting procedure for mineral species is similar to modal analysis differing from it principally in the aspect of texture recognition. RECENTLY spectrophotometry has been reported to provide a convenient technique for the rapid and reproducible determination of xanthate concentration in pulp solution 1,2 and for a kinetic study of xanthate decomposition in acid solutions." Since the application of this analytical technique is feasible for those compounds showing pronounced light absorption maxima in the near ultraviolet region, it was deemed advisable to investigate the absorption spectra of some of the organic compounds that are used in flotation. It is known empirically that certain groups of atoms in an organic compound cause characteristic light absorption in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet range, and the wavelengths and intensities of the corresponding absorption maxima are relatively independent of the nature of the remainder of the compound. The characteristic values of such groups, which are known as chromophores, are given in the literature. 4,5 According to this information, many of the sulphydryl compounds are expected to show absorption maxima in the near or long wavelength ultraviolet region, whereas the saturated fatty acids and the saturated alkylamines do not.

World consumption of petroleum and related fuels for civil purposes in 1939 was close to 2,024,000,000 bbl., or approximately 110,000,000 bbl. more than in 1938, the United States accounting for 96,000,000 bbl. of the increased amount. With the annexation of Czechoslovakia and part of Poland, civil consurnption in Germany during 1939, notwithstanding sevre rationing in the last four months of the year, was 54,000,000 bbl., or only 1,600,000 bbl. less than in 1938, and domestic production of pctroleum and related fuels was some 34,000,000 bbl. short of civil consumption. The mounting petroleum requirements of the military forces of greater Germany are, of course, not included in these figures of civil consumption. To supply this deficiency Germany now must rely almost exclusively on the Rumanian fields, which in 1939 produced about 35,000,000 bbl in ewes, of the Rumanian civil consumption.
