A short study has been made of the underground mining potential in the Plains region, the Province of Alberta, Canada. Particular reference is made to the possible application of longwall mining: Presently underground mining is limited to small scale room-and- pillar methods. The problems anticipated with large scale mining at shallow depths (30 m) are examined. Production factors based upon longwall retreat mining utilizing shield supports are also considered.

Utah International's Shirley Basin Mine is located in the Southeastern High Plains of Wyoming at an elevation of 7100 ft. The Shirley Basin area is a gently rolling semi-arid land. The uranium ore zone occurs at depths ranging from 270-350 ft below the surface. Overburden consists of poorly consolidated sandstones, siltstones and clays. Underground mining was begun in 1960. Conditions were made difficult by high rates of water inflow and ground support problems. Development of a solution mining or in-situ leaching technique allowed underground operation to be abandoned in 1964. Solution mining provided limited production from 1963 to July 1970. In January, 1969, large scale development of open-pit mining was begun. A 1200 tpd mill went on-stream in March, 1971.

The use of operations research and computer techniques continued to expand during 1967. A number of mining companies either obtained computers or were experimenting with their use through service bureaus. This trend was also evident in the Canadian mining industry. Although the annual Symposium and Short Course on Computers and Operations Research in Mineral Industries was not held in 1967, technical periodicals like MINING ENGINEERING, Mining Congress Journal and Engineering and Mining Journal stepped up their coverage on the subject. The annual AIME meeting had eight papers in two sessions and one session on Operations Research was held at the SME Fall Meeting in Las Vegas.

The effects of zirconium on the properties of sand cast Mg-rare earth metal alloys were discussed in detail in an earlier publication.' The Thompson Creek Coal & Coke Corp. operates three coal mines which presently supply the United States Steel Corp. with high grade, medium volatile coking coal at a rate of 1000 tpd. Mining is done at an elevation of 8000 ft, approximately 13 miles southwest of the small town of Carbondale, Colo. The coal is cleaned mechanically by heavy media and Deister tables, after which it is trans- ported to the railhead at Carbondale. GENERAL GEOLOGY The coal beds in this area lie in the Mesa Verde formation of Cretaceous age. Three beds are now being mined, with a fourth possibility pending further exploratory work. Formation of the Rocky Mountains tilted the sedimentary strata approximately 30º and created considerable faulting throughout. These faults, which range from a few inches to 35- ft displacement, constitute serious obstacles to mining.

THE nickel-chromium alloys of importance are those containing iron and those free from iron. The most important alloys containing iron, with regard to high tonnage, are the nickel-chromium steels. Straight nickel steel was introduced about the year 1889, but it was not until 1895, when it was found that the addition of chromium greatly increased the FIG. 1.-RESISTIVITY OF NICKEL-CHROMIUM-IRON ALLOYS. strength and resistance to shock, that nickel-chromium steels came into use. The three types of nickel-chromium steels developed at this time were: Type 1, containing 3.50 per -cent. nickel and 1.50 per cent. chromium; type 2, containing 2.00 per cent. nickel and 1.00 per cent. chromium; and type 3, containing 1.50 per cent. nickel and 0.50 per cent. chromium.

The broad general distinction between primary and secondary batteries lies in the fact that in the former the current is produced by the consumption of one or both of the elements composing the cell, while in the latter the elements retain their form as such, and merely pass from one state of chemical combination to another. Much has been said in condemnation and but little in praise of storage-batteries; yet, notwithstanding the severe criticisms passed upon them, the skepticism with which electricians have viewed them, and the ignorance with which they have been handled, they continue to push their way into use. Mineral particles in coal have enormous variation in size. Some are large enough to be seen by eye, others can be seen with the optical microscope and still others are so small that they can be resolved only by electron microscopy. We paid particular attention to particles of clays and sulfides less than 1 pm in size.
