THE trend in ball milling has been toward mills of larger diameter, but without fundamental laws as a guide. The speeds at which mills are run have been a matter of cut-and-try. This paper deals with both diameter and speed and proposes to show the laws which apply to some laboratory ball mills, ranging in diameter from 18 to 42 in., run at various speeds. The correlation of power, speed, and grinding rate of the respective mills will be shown by curves of markedly significant similarity. Before presenting the results some consideration will be given to the mechanics of ball milling.

COPPER and the copper-base solid solutions readily form twin crystals when plastically deformed at a suitably elevated temperature or annealed after cold deformation. In fact, no feature of the microstructure of these materials is more prominent or characteristic than these straight-sided bands or simple lines of division which sometimes come from groups of thin polysynthetic lamellae, penetrating part way or wholly through the parent grain substance, but often divide the grain into a few or perhaps only two crystallographically related parts. Nearly always the bands as seen in the usual microscopic examination of a specimen come into vivid contrast with the adjacent crystalline material owing to the inherent difference in orientation. Bands which under special conditions of orientation cannot be seen with vertically incident light are often visible under oblique illumination and, when this fails, contrasting effects usually may be obtained by using polarized light. There is no longer any doubt that these synthetic banded structures obtained in the ordinary course of working and annealing are due to twinning of the spinel type which was observed long ago in a number of metals crystallizing in the isometric system.1 It has been customary in metallurgical literature to designate these synthetic twins, which grow into prominence during an annealing process, as "annealing twins" without regard to the actual mode of their formation, which is, indeed, obscure and with scant recognition of the fact that prior deformation is essential, no twins having been observed in metal of known unstrained history. This is questionable; especially in view of. the fact that in a number of metals and minerals, reorientation into the twin configuration is known to occur as a result of a simple shearing mechanism along the recognized twinning planes and the

ABOUT six years ago the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. decided to investigate the possibility of extracting zinc from the ores of certain mines in the Butte district. These ores are of a complex character and contain so much iron and lead that the concentrate contains only 33 to 35 per cent. zinc. Investigations showed that while a high-grade concentrate could not be obtained by ordinary methods, such as tabling and magnetic treatment, a fair grade could be made by the Horwood process. In this method, the concentrate resulting from the flotation of all of the sulfides is given a light roast and this calcine is subjected to flotation in the presence of a large amount of sulfuric acid; the resulting concentrate contains most of the zinc and a residue contains most of the iron. The fact that the lead, copper, and silver are divided approximately equally between the zinc concentrate and the iron residue and the large consumption of acid, which ranged from 50 to 100 lb. (22 to 45 kg.) per ton of concentrates, were serious objections to this plan. The zinc recovery, moreover, was low, as a considerable percentage invariably accompanied the iron. While a profit might be made on the ores by the use of this process, it was thought that other and more promising methods might be devised. After carefully studying the field and doing some laboratory work on various processes that had been suggested, it was decided that the electrolysis of sulfate solutions was the most promising. We soon found, as have other investigators, that the only way to obtain a good zinc deposit is to have the electrolyte free from all metals more electro-negative than zinc, such as copper, cadmium, lead, arsenic, antimony, etc. Arsenic and antimony are particularly injurious, causing very poor current efficiency and small yield per horsepower when present in amounts so small as almost to defy detection-1 mg. or less per liter.

MANY MISUNDERSTANDINGS have arisen regarding -Al the purchase by the Government of 24,000,000 oz. of domestically produced silver annually for the next four years at a price of 64 1/2c. to the producer. Some editorials have an¬nounced rather sarcastically that be¬cause of the strong western silver bloc in Congress, the Administration is paying a bonus of approximately $22,000,000 to a few large silver produc¬ers of the West, the amount being figured on the total purchase of about 100,000,000 oz. and the difference between the Government price and the world price for silver. Actually the Government will make a profit on this purchase, due to seigniorage, of something over $60,000,000. The 96,000,000 oz. of silver, for which the producers will receive approximately $62,000,000, will be produced in association with at least $100,000,000 worth of lead, zinc, copper and gold; the greater part of this $162,000,000 worth of metal will be produced at little profit to the mining companies, as will be shown later, because of the low prices for lead, copper and zinc. This amount of money will be spent largely for labor and supplies, thus greatly relieving the national burden of unemployment. Certainly, western mining, in the purchase of this silver, is not victimizing the Federal Government.

Observations were made on the recrystallization of a 70 pct cdd-rolled silicon-iron crystal with an initial orientation of (113) [332]. Its polygonization and recrystallization characteristics were studied. Results indicated that re crystallization tendency of the deformed crystal is much weakened by the polygonization of the matrix. Complete recrystallization in such specimens is achieved by the growth of recrystallized grains of sufficient size and of the right orientations in relation to the matrix. Evidence was also furnished which suggests that the difference in the re-crystallization tendency is a result of the difference in the severity of lattice bending rather than the difference in orientation of the deformation texture. DUNN and Koh1,2 have made an extensive study on the rolling and annealing textures in silicon-iron crystals. Their results indicated that the recrystallization tendency can be widely different in crystals with different orientations. A particularly interesting example of their results was a crystal with an initial orientation of (113) [332], which developed a deformation texture of (001) [110] after 70 pct cold-rolling. Recrystallization in this crystal took long time anneals at high temperatures. Other crystals having different orientations recrystallized very rapidly. Wiener and corcoran3 have observed the retention of the (100) [011] deformation texture in a low-temperature annealed specimen of a commercial silicon-iron alloy, corresponding to areas of light-etching low-angle boundaries in the annealed struc-

The activities of nickel in liquid iron-nickel solutions containing from 10 to 90 at. pct Ni were measured over the temperature range .1510° to 1600°C. A special function was devised whereby activities can be computed by a graphical integration using the results of chemical analyses on the vapor phase alone. The liquid solutions studied exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, but they approach ideality as the temperature is raised from 1510° to 1600°C. The maximum heat of solution is less than -8.0 kcal per mole. The entropy of solution is less than —2.5 kcal per mole deg at 1510°C, and changes negligibly as the temperature is raised. The liquid iron-nickel solutions do not follow regular solution behavior. THE activities of the components of a liquid alloy system can be determined in favorable cases from the partial pressure of the vapor in equilibrium with the liquid alloy.' The crystal structures of eight of the nine intermediate phases in the Nb-Rh system were investigated by X-ray techniques. The following structures occur: a,Nb3Rh (Cr3O type);o(ofe - cr type) (H.T. phase, structure unknown); Q2 (AuCU type); a, (orthorhombic, analogous to a,, (Ta-Rh)); a (AuCd type); a,, (monoclinic, related to samarium type); a-8 (VCo3 type); a, NbRh, (AuCu, type). Structural relationships between the six close-packed intermediate phases are discussed and a comparison with the Nb-Ir, Ta-Rh, and Ta-Ir systems is made. In the Nb-Rh phase diagram,' nine intermediate phases were encountered. A summary of the reservoir engineering and related geologic data on the Schuler field, Union County, Arkansas, is presented here in a manner intended to interest both technical and nontechnical readers. The Cotton Valley formation and the Reynolds oolite are oil-productive formations in the Schuler field, but the Jones sand pool, at a depth of 7500 ft., developed with 146 wells on zo-acre spacing, is the reservoir of principal interest. The Jones sand sandstone reservoir is an anticlinal trap typically gas-drive or depletion type in performance. The core analyses from 88 per cent of the wells drilled, together with drilling time and electric-log data, yield an accurate estimate of the "productive" sand thickness and its areal distribution over the pool. Accurate production statistics, monthly reservoir-pressure surveys, and bottom-hole sample analyses when correlated by the "material-balance equation" show unusually good agreement with that principle. Estimates of oil initially in place made by the material-balance method and the sand-volume method are in good agreement at 116 to rzo million barrels. The reservoir-pressure history of the pool reflects the reaction of a reservoir to production, proration and secondary-recovery practices. The cost of the extensive program of reservoir study in the Jones sand pool has been estimated, in order to emphasize the value derived from such an investment through better understanding of a reservoir's reaction to production practices. Unit operation of 140 of the 146 Jones sand wells made possible an effective unitized gas-injection pressure-maintenance program. Res-ervoir-pressure decline was arrested, natural flow was maintained, and pumping and lease equipment were conserved. An increased ultimate recovery of zo million barrels beyond the estimated 34 million barrels primary recovery is indicated at present. Extension of the Jones sand unit to include the undeveloped Cotton Valley formation will permit additional recovery of otherwise uneconomic reserves of oil through wells no longer required in the Jones sand operations. The temperature, orientation, and strain-rate dependence of tensile flow in single-crystal NiA1 of equiatomic composition have been investigated up to 800°C. Compression tests at room temperature have also been carried out. Optical and replica electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods were used to investigate the slip mechanisms. NiAl exhibits {110)(001) slip and cube slip {l00)(010) was also observed. This results in very high strength of single crystals in cube orientation. The implications of this slip mode, with the resultant small number of possible slip systems and three mutually perpendicular slip vectors, are discussed. ThE CsCl structure compounds represent a class related to the bcc elements, but their behavior is affected by three additional variables: composition (within the stability range of the compound), extent of long-range order perfection, and bonding energy. Very little data are available on the effects of these variables on mechanical properties. Rachinger and ~ottrell' suggested slip to occur along (111) in compounds of low ordering energy; in compounds of higher bond strength (>0.06 ev), they observed (110) (001) slip. As pointed out by copley,' only three in- dependent slip systems are available in the latter case; hence general deformation is impossible. Brown3 carried out a theoretical calculation of the yield-point variation with the degree of long-range order in the CsCl structure, based on the assumption of superdislocations. More general approaches, based on considerations of superlattice dislocations and antiphase domain boundaries in ordered structures, were carried out by Flinn~ and by Vidoz and Brown.' These, however, give no information on changes in the slip structure—if any—between the ordered and the disordered compounds. This aspect was investigated experimentally and theoretically by Stoloff and Davies' and by Marcinkowski and chessin7 in FeCo. The latter workers proposed the deformation behavior of the ordered FeCo to be essentially the same as that in many other bcc metals. Investigations of polycrystalline A~M~'-'O indicate considerable variation in mechanical properties with composition and test temperature. The existence of {123)(111) slip was reported in AgMg.'9'9'0 (The formation energy of this compound, presumed to be ordered at all temperatures below melting, is 4.38 cal per g-atom," i.e., 0.024 ev per bond.) The yield strength has been reported as relatively independent of temperature below 0.45 T, (where T, is the absolute melting temperature). Tensile deformation of single-crystal AgMg was also investigated by Kurf-man," who observed marked tendency to single glide on{112}(111) and {110)(111). BARITE probably was first mined in the United States in 1845, when a small deposit was operated in Prince William County, Virginia1. The next state to produce barite was Missouri, and according to Weigel2, mining began about 1860. Virginia was the leading producer during the early period of barite mining, but by 1893, Missouri was producing almost an equal amount3. From this date, Virginia, although not the leading producer, furnished large quantities of crude barite until oper-ations gradually declined about 1907. Since 1910, there has been only one producer in Virginia. It is not known when barite was discovered in each of the Virginia areas (Fig. 1), but it is reliably reported that mining on a commercial scale began in Campbell-Pittsylvania counties about 1874; Smyth County in 1877; and in the Russell-Tazewell area about 1890. Barite is widely distributed in Virginia, occurring in nineteen counties. The localities that contain material of some economic value have been grouped into six areas (Fig. 1), each designated by the county or counties in which the barite is found. As many of the smaller areas show a similarity in geologic occurrence, they will be considered in this paper as two major groups; namely, Appalachian Valley and Piedmont Province. The first group, which includes the barite deposits of Russell, Tazewell, Smyth, Botetourt and Roanoke counties, lies northwest of the Blue Ridge and its foothills and southeast of the Appalachian plateaus. The other group includes deposits from the Blue Ridge on the west to the western margin of the Coastal Plain, in Campbell, Pittsylvania, Bedford, Grayson, and Fauquier counties.

A study was made of the change in density during the first (transient) and second (linear) stages of the creep curve of polycrystalline copper as a function of 1) stress, 2) temperature, 3) plastic strain, 4) impurity and atmosphere effects, and 5) structure, including single crystals. Voids were not observed in single crystals strained 15 pct at 500°C, or in a polycrystal-line aggregate produced by recrystallizing a single crystal, within the limit of sensitivity, Ae/e = 1 x 10-4. It appears that voids are heterogeneously nucleated at grain boundaries by an insoluble phase, or phases, which can be removed by directional solidification. The principal controlling mechanism of void growth appears to be condensation of vacancies at grain boundaries. Vacancies are transported to a boundary and condense as a consequence of the tensile stress component across the boundary, which depends on the orientation and configuration of the boundary plane and on boundary shear across ledges and other irregularities. The ultimate source of vacancies is the free surface and diffusional transport is by way of the boundary plane. PREVIOUS investigations have dealt with the nucle-ation of voids at grain boundaries under creep condition~'-~ and with the connection between grain boundary voids and subsequent brittle fracture.5-7 Growth of voids during the creep process, particularly in the transient and linear stages of creep, has not been studied with the same intensity. Therefore, it seems pertinent to investigate the process of void growth with respect to the related creep curve, and the morphology of growing voids with respect to the structure.

The recovery of the initial flow stress of poly-crystalline iron is characterized by a) a logarithmic time dependence; b) an increasing activation energy with increasing recovery; c) an increased ?,ate and fraction of recovery with decreased temperature of deformation; and d) an increased rate with increased deformation. Isochro)ml studies of the recovery of single crystals revealed more sluggish recovery. The original flou3 stress of single crystals could be regained by recovery anneals at 800"or 900°C. ThE great majority of the theoretical treatments and experimental studies of strain-hardening have been concerned with the close-packed lattices.' Very little effort has been expended on the bcc structure so that the theory of work-hardening of this lattice is essentially nonexistent. The limited amount of experimental data resulting from the direct studies on silicon-iron,2 low-carbon steel,3 and purified irons4"7 does not as yet permit a detailed analysis of the strain-hardening. Studies concerned with the effects of annealing following deformation have been few in number," have been somewhat limited in extent, and have had the disadvantage of using irons containing a substantial impurity content. The present research was undertaken to augment the limited knowledge we have of the characteristics of a bcc metal as regards strain-hardening and recovery from the strain-hardened state. The recovery of the flow stress has been employed since it was felt that the stress associated with the hardened state gives at least a fair qualitative description of the state of the imperfections causing the hardening. The study was concerned primarily with the recovery of flow stress following strain-hardening of polycrys-talline, zone-melted iron as a function of the amount of deformation, the temperature of deformation, and the time and temperature of the recovery anneal. A limited investigation of the recovery of the initial flow stress of single crystals of this same material as a function of the recovery temperature was also conducted in conjunction with the Lambot X-ray technique." MATERIAL The zone-melted iron used in this investigation was obtained through the courtesy of the American Iron and Steel Institute and Battelle Memorial Institute. The analysis, as given by the supplier indicated a maximum impurity content of 0.02 wt pct excluding those impurities listed in Table I. (The actual impurity content is very probably less than this since detection limits were considered as the amount of a particular impurity level.) THE investigations of Wyman1 have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunity to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydro-gen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxy-gen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxi-dizing anneal, but beyond this the mecha-nism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subse-quently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves he reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the sub-scale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as Si02-Cu20, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been con-cluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or indi-vidually under more or less predictable conditions.
