That the single charging-bell, properly proportioned, is a good all-around device for distributing material in a blast-furnace can scarcely be questioned; yet it is equally true that, in some cases, it has not given perfect satisfaction; as has been demonstrated by the substitution of double bells, at furnaces under the beat management—generally in cases where anthracite, either alone, or with a portion of coke, was used as fuel. The defect of the single bell seems to be that it does not permit, beyond very narrow limits, such changes in charging as may be required by the temporary conditioil of the furnace. Modern furnaces using Connellsville or other good coke and Lake Superior ores seem to be well served with a single bell. At least, up to a certain size, somewhere about 18 by 85 ft. to 19 by 90 feet, these furnaces make low-silicon pig-iron with about 1,800 lb. of fuel, or in some cases very much less. The following instances occur to me, in which other forms of charging-apparatus have been employed with advantage: 1. Surface mining of coal is widely condemned as a despoiler of the countryside and wastrel of land and natural resources. Yet the fact has been as widely ignored that the ingenuity of those engaged in developing the methods and equipment utilized in surface mining have made several hundred million tons of coal available for utilities and industry which could never have been mined by any other method. While doing this, the surface mining companies have recovered nearly 100% of the coal in the mining area instead of approximately 50% as is common in underground methods. Efficiency has been increasing constantly, thereby maintaining low cost to the customer. Mining has provided economic health in many areas by virtue of the direct payrolls and by the attraction of other industries to enjoy low cost, dependable fuel supplies. Surface mining of coal generally falls into two categories: contour mining, which is the result of mining in hilly or mountainous terrain where the hillside or slope limits the width of the area which can be surface mined; and area mining, which results from the surface of the land being approximately parallel with the coal seam so that a wide area may be mined in a succession of pits or open cuts.

A mine that staggers the imagination is Chuquicamata, the granddaddy of them all. In 1968 production exceeded 300,000 tons of copper. Production began in 1915 and mining proceeded solely on oxide ores until 1953 when the first treatment of sulfides began. Today the company has mined about 1.2 billion tons of all types of material since inception. The accelerating rate of output can be gauged by the comparable 1946 figure of production-to-date which was 350 million tons. No single mine comes close to touching Chuqui for productivity at its high annual metal yield mining only 90,000 tpd of ore at the luxurious waste-to-ore ratio of 0.6 to 1. However, the complexity of the operation is enormous and the experience required to synchronize the various processes is masked by normal operations and only becomes apparent in times of emergency such as when the slide took place in the pit in February.

For the past 3 years, the authors have been conducting research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to improve the process of excavation by drilling and blasting. The approach followed has been experimental where the development of stress waves and fractures initiated at the bore hole have been investigated in order to obtain a complete understanding of the dynamic Fracture process. The second step in the approach has been to introduce modifications in the drill and blast procedure which will permit closer control of the fracture process.

THE three principal mines from which the celebrated Salisbury iron ores are obtained are called respectively the "Old Hill," "Davis," and "Chatfield" ore beds, and are situated in the town of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., on the eastern slope of the Tocconuc range of hills.* The Old Hill Ore Bed is a tract of land of 100 acres, originally granted by the General Court in October, 1731, to be laid out by Daniel Bissell of Windsor. It was soon after surveyed and located by Ezekiel Ashley and John Pell. The descendants of Ashley are still proprietors in the mine. The supply of ore has been very abundant, and for many years was easily obtained, but latterly the cost of raising has been greatly increased. Up to about 1840 the average yield was estimated to be about 4500 tons per annum. The production has gradually increased until the average yield at pres¬ent is estimated at 15,000 tons annually. The largest production in any one year was about 20,000 tons. The proprietors of this mine were incorporated many years ago under the style of "The Salisbury Ore Bed Proprietors." The Davis Ore Bed, named after an early owner, was originally called Hendricks Ore Bed, and was owned before the organization of the town of Salisbury by Thomas Lamb, one of the first settlers *The data from which the historical portion of these notes has been compiled were collected by the Barnum-Richardson Company, of Lime Rock (Salisbury), Conn.

The cost of transporting mineral raw materials and products will receive greater attention in the next 10-20 years because raw material sources and markets are changing. Today, shipping costs may equal 20%-80% of the landed or delivered cost of raw materials and products. Companies are learning that total costs are what count to the company and customers. Transportation has historically been priced at "What the traffic would bear" and little real effort has been made to analyze the shippers problem and provide them with effective and low cost transportation. This climate existed in both ocean and rail transport. The shiplines and railroads did not understand the shipper's problems and few shippers understood transportation and how to buy it. Recently more consideration has been given to the advantages between the American Merchant Marine- American Flag and Foreign flag vessels. The discussions held focused on what action is desirable to encourage American flag operations. Based on extensive studies made by both A. E. Gibson, Maritime Administrator and R. J. Blackwell, Deputy Maritime Administrator, the resulting statistics show that the potential for ocean transport is as follows: U. S. Foreign trade is estimated at 620 million long tons annually in the early 1980's. It was 418 million tons in 1968. In 1968 only 6.4% of the U.S. ocean borne trade was carried on American Flag vessels. About 50 million tons of early 1980's trade will go ill container ships. That leaves over 500 million tons to go as bulk or "neo-bulk" cargo.

THE development of a cement that will resist the destructive action of sea water and other corrosive waters is a problem that has occupied cement chemists for the past one hundred years. It has been found that of the various salts that commonly occur in corrosive waters, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride are most destruc-tive to cement. Many investigations have been carried out in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe to solve the problem of what constitutes a sulphate-resistant cement, and during the past 10 years some of the findings give definite information in this respect. COMPOSITION OF CEMENT Portland cement is composed of four major compounds: 1. Tricalcium silicate 3CaO.Si02 (C3S) 2. Dicalcium silicate 2CaO.Si02 (C2S) 3. Tricalcium aluminate 3CaO.Al203 (C3A) 4. Tetracalcium aluminoferrite 4CaO.Al203.Fe203 (C4AF) The two calcium silicates are the main contributors of strength. The tricalcium aluminate contributes some to the early strength of the cement but has the least resistance of the four compounds toward the attack of sulphate waters. The tetracalcium aluminoferrite does not contribute very much to the strength, but is far more resistant to sulphate waters than the tricalcium aluminate. When hardened cement is exposed to water containing sodium or magnesium sulphates, these salts will react with the hydrated tricalcium aluminate in the cement and form compounds that will cause a swelling, disruption and crumbling of the hardened cement.

The excess of demand over supply in 1925 was 25,000,000 bbl. The increase of stocks over those at the close of 1924 was 25,000,000 bbl. Of the stocks on hand at the close of 1925, about 82,000,000 bbl. in California were not refinable. Imports from Mexico and South America It would not be surprising if, by 1930, we should actually welcome the imports from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Trinidad. I feel sure that the apparent anomolies between his findings and ours arise as a result of the different experimental methods used. The modem oxygen electrode method he used is sensitive to nano moles of oxygen uptake whereas the method we used was only sensitive to micro moles at best. Furthermore, our experimental method did not permit measurements to be made in the first ten to fifteen minutes of reaction, the very time he is observing. Direct comparison of his data to ours is made difficult because of not knowing the specific area of the samples he used. However, we found that precipitation of PbS using sodium sulphide gave rise to samples of area approximately 30 m2 g - 1. Noticing the rapid decline in oxidation rate over ten minutes, as reported in Table 1, one can conclude that we could not measure the rate after ten minutes using our method. Taking the above area I estimate that at these rates only a small fraction of surface would be oxidised in a period of hours. I can only conclude that at some point a change in oxidation mechanisms occurs giving rise to a much faster rate such as we observed. Finally, I would like to comment on the apparent inertness of the homogeneously precipitated lead sulphide sample 11. This method of preparation we found to give specific areas of 20 to 30 times less than other methods and this would account for the very low oxidation rate.

Discussion of the paper of E. B. THORNHILL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1653 to 1670. D. B. HUNTLEY, Oakland, Cal.-About 15 years ago it chanced to be my lot to cyanide some mill tailings, assaying about $5 per toll in gold and, a few cents in silver. It was in southern Idaho, a. desert region where costs are nearly as large as in central Nevada. We knew that we had a lot of tailings that had been amalgamated and contained about 1 lb. of quicksilver per ton. We knew that we would dissolve some of the quicksilver when we cyanided them with say 0.25 per cent. cyanide solution. We figured (optimistically) that the cyanide would dissolve all of the quicksilver, and we thought to capture all of that, 1 lb. per ton; and we figured out profits as partly gold, partly silver, and partly quicksilver from the recovery in working those tailings. Actually, however, we did this: We had a battery of three large, old-fashioned silver-mill retorts. We retorted our zinc-dust precipitate, recovering about ¼ lb. of quicksilver per ton treated. That was only a loss of 75 per cent. of what we originally had, but still it was profitable by virtue of the conditions. I mention it partly to call attention to the crude old way of doing it, and partly to call attention to how chemical methods for recovering quicksilver have developed in the last 15 years.

(communication to the Secretary): In view of Mr. Louis's statement that the balance and weights employed in his experiment were '(by no means first-rate," the results can scarcely be entitled to weight. And if a slight variation in specific gravity were to be accepted as proof of the existence of allotropic modifications, we should be obliged to conclude that every metal existed in such modifications. When the observed specific gravity of an alloy (as is often, and perhaps generally, the rase) differs from the calculated one, it seems more reasonable to explain the difference (apart from errors of determination) by assuming that actual chemical combination takes place between some atoms of the metals. MR. Louis (communication to the Secretary): In reply to the criticisms with which Mr. Stetefeldt has favored me, I beg to point out to him that, in the first place, I do not myself attach very much weight to the results I have obtained. I merely claim to have pointed out that amorphous gold obtained from dissolving up the alloy with silver has a higher specific gravity than common gold—a result corroborated by the quoted results of Rose. At any rate, it is easy to repeat my observations, and I hope this may be done by men who have better opportunities than myself for this investigation. Surely it is worthy of attention from assayers at the mints. I am not prepared to say that I should regard slight variations in specific gravity as absolute proof of allotropism, but I do consider

AT a recent meeting of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, during a discussion upon the compression of air, attention was called to an apparent anomaly in the phenomena attending the compression. At a subsequent meeting this apparent anomaly was explained by Prof. Herschel, and all the facts observed shown to be strictly in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics. Upon reading the report of the discussion in the published transactions of the society, it occurred to me that an attempt to determine mathematically the amounts of energy (whether in the form of heat or of work) expended and absorbed in compressing air, and causing it to perform work by expansion, might prove of use to some who have not access to any treatise upon the application of the laws of thermodynamics to the compression of air, and who have not the time or the inclination to make such application for themselves. The purpose of this paper is to invite attention away from the obvious. direct monetary costs of oil-field overdevelopment (as distinguished from "social costs") to a consideration of the role played by the exercise of freedom to create even allegedly excessive1 plant facilities in contributing to the maintenance of equilibrium in the wholc economy and in promoting material progress. The obvious and most commonly discussed effect of overdevelopment of oil fields is illustrated by the allegation that already the excessive development of the East Texas field has cost upward of $162,000,000;2 in other words, the drilling of 12,500 wells more than the number estimated as the requirement for economical recovery of the reserve has unnecessarily raised the total cost of development that amount. Many other illustrations of so-called excessive development of oil pools could be presented. Some of them, like Cushing, Powell and Long Beach, might be drawn from the era antedating widespread discussion in the trade of such matters as optimum well spacing, reservoir energy, the conservation rate of depletion of reserves, etc. Numerous other cases can he found in the records of the current era, which began with the introduction of rationalized restriction of production. Besides East Texas, there may be mentioned Oklahoma City, Centralia and. more recently, the town-lot development of Bloomingdale, Michigan.

Beck (University of Illinois, Urbana, 111.)—An interesting result of this work is the fact that in cold rolled molybdenum sheet complete loss of work hardening is obtainable on annealing, without change in texture. The retainment of the cross-rolling texture on soft-annealing is particularly significant, since this is essentially a single orientation texture, where texture retainment could be achieved by only one of the two niechanisms which produce this effect in aluminum,16 namely by recrystallization in situ. Recrystallization in situ was originally discovered by Collins and Mathewson (1940) and by Crussard (1944) as a phenomenon taking place on annealing in relatively mildly deformed single crystals of aluminum. It now appears to be a major (in many cases the major) mechanism of annealing of severely cold rolled poly-crystalline material, not only in aluminum,le but in metals as different in character as beryllium," tita- nium,'" and molybdenum. All these data now confirm the general validity, at least for more or less pure metals, of the interpretation of the annealing process given a few years ago by Smith.'" The whole question of recrystallization is now reopened. Indeed, it appears that recrystallization, as defined traditionally, may not occur at all, since at the time "deformed material" is absorbed by "recrystallized grains," it has already become completely strain free by recovery and "recrystallization in situ."

During 1918, the activities of the United Engineering Society, the Library, the Engineering Foundation, and Engineering Council Were deeply affected by the war and much important war work Was done in our building. The endowment of Engineering Foundation was increased to $300,000 by an additional gift of $100,000 from Ambrose Swasey. By bequest of Dr. James Douglas, the American Institute of Mining Engineers received an endowment of $100,000, the income of which Will be expended in the maintenance of its library (now a part of the joint library). The Library Service Bureau has gained steadily; its business for 1918 amounted to nearly $10,000. Indexing of current engineering literature has been undertaken in conjunction With the Founder Societies and the Index is being printed in their publications. This service has been extended to the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Mining Institute. The expense is borne by the Societies. In this connection the American Society of Mechanical Engineers has purchased the Engineering Index heretofore published by "Industrial Management." In June the Westinghouse and General' Electric Co. donated to the United Engineering Society their Patent Con¬trol Library of about 8000 volumes. Other noteworthy gifts Were a collection of 370 pieces relating to patent litigations, from Jesse M. Smith, and Dr. William Paul Gerhard's collection on gas engineering, transferred by the American Gas Association.

INTRODUCTION The Chord property was acquired in 1975 from Roy Chord, an early prospector and miner of the area. He had staked numerous claims on the southern flank of the Black Hills in the early 19501s, and by the late 50’s, many small open pit and underground mines had been or were in operation. By the mid 1960's small tonnages of high-grade oxidized uranium ore had been mined from the property. Starting in 1975, Union Carbide conducted a series of exploration programs to determine the remaining economic potential. The previously mined areas were re-examined in order to define additional oxidized mineralization. Meanwhile, a wide-spaced drilling program was initiated to determine the potential for deeper unoxidized deposits. Through the exploration program of 1979, measured minable reserves in excess of two million pounds of contained uranium had been discovered. GEOLOGY The Edgemont District is located on the southern end of the Black Hills Uplift. A succession of pre-Cambrian to Cretaceous Formations is exposed within the core and across the flanks. The uranium host is the lower Cretaceous Inyan Kara Group which is divided into two formations, the Lakota and Fall River Formations (Figure 1). The basal Lakota Formation rests unconformably on the Jurassic Morrison Formation and consists of fluvial channel sandstones

INTRODUCTION In recent years in Poland, a problem connected with the occurrence of a considerable amount of liberated galena grains in size fractions under 1mm has arisen in the zinc-lead processing area. Operating practices have included crushing of ore particles under 0.2 mm followed by flotation. Jigs were applied to separate the concentrates from size fractions under 10 mm and to prevent the galena overgrinding. However, the fractions being too wide, the jigs have not worked effectively, in spite of the great differences in specific gravities of galena, blende and gangue minerals. Fine galena grains move into light fractions in considerable amounts and hence are overground. Therefore, the flotation becomes difficult and galena is lost in its tailings. These losses could be avoided by introducing separation in the grinding and classification circuits. The amount of 0-1 mm fraction is great; therefore, the application of concentrating tables or other kinds of jigs is impossible from an economic point of view. Taking these factors into account, the possibility of application of pinched-sluices was investigated. These are simple devices without moving parts, they have a high output for the unit areas, and their water and energy consumptions are low. In this paper, the results of zinc-lead ores beneficiation in pinched-sluices are presented.

A detailed study of carrier flotation of kaolin clay using calcite showed the major beneficiation mechanism to be enhanced aggregation between anatase and calcite under intense agitation conditions. To develop an understanding of this selective aggregation, surface charge characteristics of kaolinite, anatase, and calcite were studied under simulated flotation conditions. Zeta potential of all these minerals tended towards a constant negative value in oleate solutions under certain conditions possibly due to adsorption or precipitation of oleate on them. However, whereas the zeta potential of anatase in the oleate solutions was not influenced by the agitation level, that of kaolinite was found to be strongly dependent on the agitation intensity. The effect of oleate on zeta potential of kaolinite was reduced by an increase in agitation intensity. It is suggested that oleate is much more firmly bound to the surface of the anatase and that this preferential attachment is responsible for the enhanced selective aggregation of the anatase with calcite. Agitation level plays a major role in carrier flotation since intense agitation is considered to enhance both the chemisorption of oleate on anatase and preferential detachment of calcium oleate precipitate from the kaolinite surface, all of this producing a large difference in the surface Properties of anatase and kaolinite, and hence in their tendency to aggregate with calcite.

The academic community and the larger and more sophisticated mining companies have largely rejected the older mineral valuation methods such as the Hoskold and Morkill concepts and replaced them with "discounted cash flow" (DCF) techniques. The relevancy and usefulness of the older methods have been questioned primarily on the basis of their underlying assumptions that mining companies do not have numerous alternative investments and must use sinking funds deposited at market or "safe" rates of return to recover the purchase price of mineral reserves. The ability to reinvest in numerous (often nonmining) alternative business ventures, the changing purchasing power of the dollar, corporate income and other taxes, depreciation and depletion allowances, and modern financial management practice all militate against the continued use of the older valuation methods, especially for the larger mining companies. Small mining companies and individuals still use these methods largely out of habit and familiarity. The Hoskold Mineral Reserve Valuation Method The Hoskold method was developed prior to the evolution of modern accounting practices and before the days of the corporate income tax. At the time of its development, annual earnings of the firm were represented by the difference between cash revenues and cash expenses and were not subject to taxation by the government. Thus, earnings at that time were equivalent to what is today known as cash flow.
