PROBABLY one of the most perplexing problems with which a mill operator contends is the proper evaluation of his mill results. True, he accurately determines his recoveries of metals and grades of products monthly, weekly, and often daily. These figures do not of themselves directly translate to mill economics. When one figure is unusually good there may be an offsetting circumstance. The advantage of high lead or zinc concentrate grade may be offset by poorer recovery; high lead recovery may be offset by poorer zinc recovery, or vice versa; and so on. Besides, grades or recoveries may not of themselves mean more than a reflection of the grade and character of the ore during the period under study. What the operator sorely needs is some one measuring stick that tells him when he has achieved his greatest return, regardless of grades or recoveries-for if he knows his methods and practices are yielding the optimum return he need no longer concern himself with the assays of products and tailings, or the corresponding distribution of metal values. At first blush it would appear that the obvious answer to this is the actual money return to the mill. Paradoxical as it may seem, however, money return does not make a dependable yardstick any more than do grades and recoveries, as ore conditions would vary enough to bring about greater money return during periods when the actual metallurgical work is not as good. The mill operator, of course, should always aim for the greatest return on the ore, once it is in the mill bins, with proper attention always to mill treatment cost. The need of a proper yardstick becomes more imperative with the increasing complexity of the problem. In the case of a simple, single-product operation on a fairly uniform ore, in which only one metal is of significant importance, the need is not great, as grade and recovery pretty well tell their own story. At the other extreme is the operation that makes three or four separate marketable products from a complex mixture of heterogeneous ores that vary tremendously in individual metal contents and ratios, degree of oxidation, and other characteristics, and in which gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc are all significant values. ECONOMIC RECOVERY The first attempt at obtaining a proper single yardstick for a fairly complex ore with which I am familiar is the use of the "Economic Recovery" term at the leadzinc flotation mill of the Sunnyside Mining and Milling Co., Eureka, Colorado. This method had been applied there early in Sunnyside flotation-mill history (not later than 1920) and credit for the innovation I believe belongs to Messrs. Kuryla and Marquand. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are. now literally the heart of the mining machine. During world war NO. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the Same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Rulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a Proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives1 will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. IT has often been reported that coatings may strengthen single crystals and polycrystalline specimens of coarse grain size. This note reports the effect of a surface layer of fine grains on the creep-rupture properties of coarse grained nickel 99.8 pct pure. Sheet specimens were machined from cold-rolled material, finished by surface grinding and annealed at 1230°C in vacuum for 4 hr. Half of them were re-ground on faces and sides and annealed at 925"C for 1 1/4 hr. The double grind-anneal treatment produced a structure consisting of a surface layer of fine grains of 0.02 mm diam on a coarse-grained substrate of grains of 0.40 mm diam. Comparison with specimens which received only the single grind showed that the second grind-anneal did not alter the structure of the substrate. Several modifications were made in specimen design to eliminate erratic rupture behavior outside of the gage length. In the final design the gage section, oriented parallel to the rolling direction, was 1.00 in. long, 0.4 in. wide, and 0.0625 in. thick. End tabs were pinned in place. Although other configurations (welded end tabs, transverse orientation, and wider gage section) showed similar effects of a layer of fine grains, because of the erratic rupture behavior, only the data from the final design are reported here. Creep tests were performed at 650°C in air and in a vacuum of 10~5 mm Hg. Creep rates were measured from the movements of the lever arm. Since the broken sheet specimens could not be fitted together, elongations at fracture measured by means of gage marks, do not include the necked portions adjacent to the fracture. Results of the creep tests with and without the fine grained surface are given in Table I. An explanation for the lower strength in air than in vacuum has been proposed previously in terms of the reduction of crack propagation energy by gas adsorption.l In both environments the fine-grained layer produced a small decrease in minimum creep rate and, except for the shortest test in air, a substantial increase in rupture life. The elongation values at rupture, as they are measured here, do not demonstrate an appreciable effect of the grain structure but do show much smaller ductilities in air than in vacuum. Greater elongations maybe associated with the finegrained layer, however, especially in vacuum, in creep curves such as those in Fig. 1. Duplicate tests were not run to determine the re-producibility of the data. It is felt, however, that, in view of the consistent behavior, the prolongation of rupture life may be attributed to the effect of the fine-grained surface. In the data not reported be-

AVING started to tell you of working potter's clay for making crucibles and shells, the wish came to me to tell you of the practice of this art also. Although it may seem at first glance to be outside the order and purpose of my writing, he who considers well will see that it is not unrelated to it but proper, since it is wholly dependent on the agency and power of fire if it is to be brought to its perfection. Moreover, the potter's glazes and colors are all substances of various metals or impure minerals and therefore belong to fire. Since it is my intention to treat of fire, minerals, and metals for you, I surely should not have omitted this, particularly because it is a necessary art which enriches and is greatly praised both for its ingenuity and its beauty. The art of the potter has two sources as its principal basis. One comes from the art of design, the other from various alchemical secrets and elemental mixtures. In regard to these, I find that, in my opinion, all this art depends in the last analysis on four things: on good judgment in general, and on the art of design so as to be able to make the vessels beautiful and of good shape, as well as to ornament them with painting; after baking them well the first and second times, the next thing is to know how to make and apply the glaze well and to paint them with varied and appropriate colors. The fourth is to see that you have good, fine clay without small stones or lumps-indeed this is to be considered as the first thing. Now this that I have called clay is what many call cretaceous earth and some call argil. It is found and dug up when the masters wish to make use of it and is put in a container to be moistened. When it is moistened, it is beaten on a bench with an iron rod and very well prepared. Mixing it carefully, every small stone, lump, or other hardness that it contains is removed and cleaned away. Then a shaft [145V] of iron is fitted as the journal in a large wheel. On the other end of the journal a small wheel is made which forms an instrument for working that is called a lathe. Having put some clay on this, it is made to rotate by pushing with one foot, and, by rotating it, vessels are worked into a pleasing shape and size. Then they are taken off and put on a board to dry. The heavy-media separation plant at the Central mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co., near Picher, Okla., was started in February 1939. Since that time twenty-four million tons of lead-zinc ore has been treated in the mill, of which approximately 70 pct has been treated by heavy-media separation. Until January 1945, galena concentrate from the flotation plant was used as the sink-float medium. At that time minus 100-mesh ferrosilicon was substituted for the galena, and its use has been continued. The purpose of this paper is to compare the operating results and the costs of operation of the two media. For the purpose of this comparison the period Jan. I, 1943, to Jan. 29, 1945, has been taken to represent the operation using galena medium; the period Jan. 29, 1945, to Sept. I, 1946, to represent the ferrosilicon medium. During the first of these periods about seven and one-half million tons was milled; during the latter, or ferrosilicon period, more than five million tons was milled. It is believed that these tonnages are large enough to give representative data. Flowsheet The Central mill has a capacity of 15,000 tons per day. Briefly, the treatment used consists of crushing the ore through I½- in. and wet-screening out the minus 3/16-in. portion. The minus 136 plus 3/16-in. washed product is treated by the heavy medium; the minus 3/16-in. product is deslimed and jigged. The heavy-media cone tailing is discarded and the cone concentrate is recrushed and jigged for the production of a coarse lead concentrate. The cone concentrate, impoverished of lead, is then ground in ball mills and treated by differential flotation. The minus 3/16-in. jig product is similarly treated. Heavy-media Plant The heavy-media cone plant treating the minus I½ plus 3/16-in. product consists of one open-top cone 20 ft in diameter by 20 ft deep, equipped with a central airlift. Concentrate is discharged from the top of the airlift to a 3 by 14-ft low-head Allis-Chalmers drainage screen. Medium drains back into the cone, from the first half of this screen. The last half of the screen is provided with washing sprays for further removal of medium. Cone tailing is similarly drained and washed. Undersize from the washing screen is thickened and then cleaned in the medium-cleaning plant. When galena was used as a medium, cleaning was done in Fagergren and Denver flotation machines. The ferrosilicon is cleaned in three 36-in. and one 24-in. Crockett magnetic separators. A flowsheet of the cone plant is shown in Fig I.

FROTH flotation is usually effected by the addition of a collector agent and a frothing agent to an aqueous suspension of suitably comminuted mineral ores. The action of collectors is to adsorb onto the surfaces of minerals to be separated, sensitizing them to bubble adherence. The action of frothers has, in the past, been accepted as that of froth formation only, brought about by a lowering of the air/water interfacial tension. Substances capable of producing froth are classed1a,b according to their relative capacities for production of froth-volume and froth stability in the simple frother-water system. The purpose of this paper is to show that the surface active agents acting as frothers become effective only when there is a suitable degree of molecular interaction taking place between collector molecules and frother molecules at the air/water and solid/ water interfaces. Further, the discussion will demonstrate that the actual mechanism of adherence of an air bubble to a suitably collector-coated particle is due to the molecular interaction collector-frother. This leads to the formation of a continuous interfacial film of associated molecules, anchored to the mineral by polar groups of the collector, and enveloping the whole bubble. The tenacity of adhesion mineral-to-bubble results from the strength and the visco-elasticity of this mixed film. Some 20 years ago Christman2 postulated mutual dependence of collector and frother in effecting flotation. This view was, however, strongly opposed by Wark,3 who pointed out that an addition of frother had no effect on the value of contact angle once this was established in the solution of collector. More recent work by Taggart and Hassialis' indicated that the presence of frother, namely, cresol, leads to the immediate establishment of a contact angle on sphalerite, partially coated with xanthate, whereas an air bubble fails to make contact in potassium ethyl xanthate solution alone, even after 60 min induction time. Wrobel5 raws attention to the selectivity of frothers in flotation. Many instances of antagonistic effects of certain mixtures of frothers (or collectors and frothers) on flotation froth have been known to flotation operators and have been reported in literature. Taggart6 and Cooke7 give several examples of incompatibility of certain ratios of frothers and collectors, e.g., oleate and long-chain sulphates, pine oil and soaps. Monolayer Penetration. Properties of insoluble films produced by molecules of surface active agents orientated at the air/liquid interface are conveniently studied by the Langmuir trough technique, described fully by Adam.' Using the trough technique Schulman and Hughes" and Schulman et al.10a. b, c, d,e established the existence of molecular interactions occur- ring between certain types of surface active agents. Their experiments revealed the phenomenon of penetration of an insoluble monolayer (e.g., a film of a long-chain alcohol) by a soluble agent (e.g., sodium alkyl sulphate) injected into the substrate (water or salt solution). The degree of molecular interaction taking place on penetration is determined by changes in the surface pressure of the resulting film, changes of its surface potential and its mechanical properties (viscosity and rigidity). When the interaction takes place between both polar groups and both hydrophobic groups of the two participating amphipathic molecules a molecular complex is formed. Complexes formed on penetration of the monolayer at interfaces are not necessarily true chemical compounds: they are labile in solution, the activity and reactivity of individual components are greatly different from those of the molecularly associated complex, and on crystallization they usually separate out into components. However, when formed in the orientated state at interfaces they are found to be very stable, although some mixed films spread as monolayers of stoichiometric complexes can show further penetration by subsequent additions of the soluble component injected into the substrate.'" The degree of association between two or more types of surface active agents is very sensitive even to small changes in electric (dipole) moment of the polar groups of the amphipathic molecules as influenced by magnitude and position of neighboring ions or dipoles, their size, concentration, and stereochemistry. In addition, the molecular association is greatly influenced by concentration and type of inorganic salts in the substrate, by its pH, and by temperature. The nonpolar groups of interacting molecules greatly affect the stability of molecular complexes. Progressive shortening of the aliphatic chain of one of the reacting molecules weakens (at an increasing rate) its tendency to form stable complexes. Similarly, introduction of a double bond of cis-form into one of the reacting chains, which changes the straight hydrocarbon chain into a kinked one, or introduction of a branched chain, reduces the stability of the associated complex. Monolayer Adsorption. Using the trough technique and injecting metal ions into the substrate (water or salt solution) underlying insoluble films of fatty acids, alkyl amines, and sulphates, Wolsten-holme and Schulman11a,b,e. ' and Thomas and Schulman" have established conditions, namely, pH, concentration. and steric factors, under which molecular interactions take place between the polar groups of the surface active agents and the metal ions. These interactions are marked by great changes in the solubility and mechanical properties of the monolayer of the agent; no surface pressure increases are observed as in monolayer penetration experiments. The results of these adsorption studies, correlated with flotation experiments, indicated that in the case of fatty acids and alkyl sulphates their adsorption onto minerals of base-metals takes place by a similar

POPULAR opinion, as it might be termed, has always been of the trend that a flotation reagent added to the ball mill during grinding would be more thoroughly mixed with the pulp and for that reason more effective in the production of low tailing. That there are other effects, inimical to good flotation, when using so-called chemical reagents, is brought out by the series of tests outlined in Table 2. It was defi-nitely proved that if either the T. T. mixture (20 per cent thiocarbanalid-80 per cent orthotoluidin) or po-tassium xanthate were added to the ball mill the result-ing flotation concentrate would be lower in copper and higher in insoluble than the concentrate produced by adding these same reagents without the ball mill cir-cuit. With the T. T. mixture four sets of tests were made. The screen analyses of the flotation feed show that there was very little difference in the original grind-ing. When the T. T. mixture was added to the head of the flotation machine the flotation concentrate had a little over 61 per cent solids -200 mesh. If the mix-ture was put into the ball mill the flotation concentrate had but 40.7 per cent of the solids -200 mesh for one set of tests, and 49.0 per cent for the other set. With the mixture at the head of flotation the total concen-trate was high in copper (34.715 and 36.525 per cent) and low in insoluble (13.20 and 11.61 per cent). The assay of the concentrate when the T. T. mixture was introduced into the ball mill was what might be termed low in copper (29.389 and 30.833 per cent). In one of these 'sets of tests (periods 8 to 11, third column) the insoluble was high, 16.81 per cent. The other run (peri-ods 12 to 15, fourth column) for some unknown reason shows a low insoluble, 12.72 per cent. With similar grinding the addition of potassium xan-thate to flotation produced a concentrate having 62.8 per cent -200 mesh, whereas with the potassium xanthate added to the ball mill the flotation concentrate was very coarse, only 36.4 per cent passing 200 mesh. The difference in the total assay of the concentrate is remarkable ; 35.847 per cent copper when the xanthate went to flotation and 30.44 per cent copper when the xanthate was added to the ball mill; insoluble, 10.94 per cent in the former instance, as 22.15 per cent in the latter.

This paper deals with an investigation of the use of steam filtration for filter cake dewatering and shows that it may be applied on a practical scale. The advent of larger quantities of minus 1/4 in. coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content. A lowering of the surface tension within the limits of normal wetting agent dosage results in a rather insignificant decrease in cake moisture content. Not until the dosage is increased to a point well beyond this limit is there an appreciable decrease in moisture. At these high dosage levels, interfacial tension is a major factor contributing to the appreciable moisture reduction obtained. Since no suitable method has been developed to recover and recycle this wetting agent, this phenomena is not of practical significance. On the other hand, a reduction in liquid viscosity has a pronounced effect on cake moisture. While it is readily apparent that one method of reducing liquid viscosity is to heat the entire feed slurry, it is equally apparent that this would not be an economic approach except, perhaps, in certain isolated cases. It does, however, suggest that water circuits should be designed to conserve heat as much as possible and to make use of any waste heat that may be available. The use of hot air as a heat carrying medium for drying porous materials on a filter has been practiced for many years. However, this method is restricted to materials with a high air rate in the order of 100 cfm/ ft2 because of the low heat release per unit weight of air passing through the cake. The normal fine coal filter cake has an air porosity far too low to make this a practical approach. Various types of radiant heating devices have been investigated and can significantly lower moisture content at reasonable thermal efficiency. However,

It is a well-known fact that magnesium-alloy castings are apt to be coarse grained if the melt is not superheated several hundred degrees above the melting point before casting. (The casting temperature varies according to the shape of the mold. A typical casting temperature is perhaps 1400°F.) British practice is to heat to 900°C. (1650°F.) for 15 min., cool rapidly to casting temperature, and cast.' In Germany superheating is carried out at 850' to 900°C. (1560° to I650°F.) depending on the amount of scrap used. It is stated that further refinement will be obtained by prolonging the period of superheating or by increasing the superheat temperature to 950°C. (I740°F.).2 In the United States superheating is carried out at 1600' to 1700°F. (871' to 927°C.), perhaps even higher in some places. It is stated that superheating effects are found as low as 1500°F. (816°C.), but several hours are required.3 These commercial treatments lead to grain sizes in sand castings that may vary from 4 to 8 grains per sq. mm.! in heavy sections and from 60 to IOO in 1/2-in. sections to perhaps 380 in thin sections. It is also generally known that the refining effect of superheating is lost if the melt is held for some time at lower temperatures before casting. Aside from these very qualitative statements, there is little to be found in the literature as to the effect of temperature and time of superheat on the final grain size. Because of the uncertainty of these factors, the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. This research, which was done under the "Restricted" Project NRC-550, is the basis of this paper, which has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. The material studied was an alloy prepared from carbothermic magnesium. The temperatures required for grain refinement proved to be widely different from those used in practice, as described in the statements in the first paragraph. This difference is attributed to the fact that the magnesium in the specimens was of carbothermic origin instead of the electrolytic magnesium in common use. It is much to be desired that managers should put into print the results of their observations of the mines under their charge. These observations, as well as data of production, kind of ores, etc., usually accumulate for years, and unless the mining geologists of the Geological Survey happen along before the mine is worked out, such data seldom get into print. About the year 1899 I went through the mines at Bodie with R. C. Turner, then superintendent, and made some notes on the veins and gangue-minerals, and collected some specimens. THE Hercules mine is located in the northeastern section of the Coeur d'Alene district, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Burke, Idaho. Surface indications of the ore deposit were first discovered in 1886, but regular mine production was not started until 1902 and was continuous until April 1925, when the known ore had been extracted. Incomplete records show that from 1912 until operations were suspended the mine produced 2 1/2 million tons of ore containing 9.4 pct lead and 7.7 oz of silver per ton, together with an estimated 2 pct zinc, 0.3 pct copper, and 20 pct iron. This operation was the first in. a series of mining enterprises culminating in October 1947 with the consolidation of Day Mines, Inc. In the same year it was decided to unwater the levels below the collar of the Hercules shaft in the hope of finding some indication of a recurrence of ore. The unwatering operation has been described in a. previous paper.' The initial exploration, following recapture of the workings, showed sufficient promise to warrant a detailed study of the mineralogy with modern techniques. The general geo1ogy of the Coeur d'Alene district, including a detailed description of the rock types encountered, has been comprehensively treated by Ransome and Calkins' in their classic paper, and only local background description, therefore, is felt to be appropriate here. The Hercules deposit transects a portion of the trough of a broad south-trending synclinorium which has been greatly complicated by faulting. More locally, it lies within a block of ground bounded on the east; by the O'Neil Gulch fault, a steep north-south overthrust of considerable magnitude, and on the west by a monzonite stock, the outcrop of which is 1/2 mile or more wide and 5 miles long. The country rock is composed of thin to medium-bedded argillites and argillaceous quartz-ites of the Prichard and Burke formations, the oldest members of the Pre-cambrian Belt Series of sediments in the area, believed to be of Algonkian age. The contact between them is a conformable gradation. The argillite is colored gray to tannish-gray and is fine-grained, compact, and generally massive in structure. Under the microscope the unaltered argillite is seen to be composed principally of anhedral quartz and a few feldspar grains which were at one time presumably partly rounded sand grains, but as a result of recrystallization and cementation by silica, the interstices are now almost obliterated and quartz grains show crenulate boundaries. The sizes of these crystals vary from 0.5 mm down to 0.1 mm in greatest dimension. In all specimens sericite comprises 10 to 20 pct of the rock and is present abundantly between most of the grains as flakes or shreds which vary considerably in size. Sometimes they form a fine felt-like mat or aggregate, and sometimes flakes are seen which appear to be good muscovite. In some specimens, separated rhombic-shaped carbonate grains are abundant, and in some instances these have been changed to sericite. Mining operations to date have explored the Hercules vein to a maximum vertical depth of 3600 ft below its outcrop, and along a maximum strike-length of 3600 ft on certain of the lower mine levels. The main orebody is irregular in outline, extending over a variable strike-length of 400 to 1500 ft; and it is intersected by a strong transverse fault that has been traced from the surface to the bottom level. This has been named the Hercules fault, and apart from the vein itself, it is the most prominent structural feature in the mine. There is good evidence that it existed prior to the introduction of ore solutions and may have influenced ore deposition, but it was also the locus of important post-ore displacement and shows a progressive right-handed horizontal component reaching 200 ft on the deeper levels. Its vertical component is not definitely known but may be considerably greater. The fault strikes 20° N to 50° E and dips westerly at angles of 70" to 45", flattening in dip where it crosses the original orebody from east to west between 1000 and 1600 ft below the surface. At about 3000 ft in depth the Hercules fault is joined by a vertical fault of similar strike, and the major post-ore dis-placement below their junction is taken up along this vertical branch of the structure, now called the Mercury fault. Recent work has been concentrated in this vicinity. Another structural feature of special geologic interest, though of little economic importance, is the occurrence of a porphyritic dike in this area. This lies a short distance above the Hercules fault, essentially parallel to it, and is 5 to 15 ft in thickness. It appears at first glance to cut the mineralization, suggesting push-apart relationship, but small stringers of the vein minerals have been observed to penetrate the dike for a matter of inches at several points. The dike is thought to be related to the monzonite intrusion. A vertical longitudinal projection of the mine is shown in Fig. 1, which illustrates most of the features discussed above. The Hercules vein was deposited along the course of a strong, persistent shear zone that now appears as a braided network of gouge seams running through more or less crushed and shattered country rock. It strikes 70° N to 80° W and dips southerly at an average of 75". Barren parts of the structure vary in width from less than 1 ft to more than 15 ft. The width of mineralized segments may be double that. Although the evidence is not conclusive, pre-mineral, normal movement along the zone may be 1000 or 1500 ft. The horizontal component is unknown. MEASUREMENTS of the rate of decomposition of austenite at constant temperature are commonly represented by plotting the percentage trans-formed on linear coordinates against time on either a linear or a logarith-mic scale, a method that yields a curve that in shape resembles an integral sign (Fig. 1). A graph of this kind is not always convenient because extrapolation to the beginning or end of the transformation, or even inter-polation, may be uncertain unless there are a large number of observations, which seldom happens; furthermore, the degree of consistency of a set of measurements is difficult to judge from such a curve. It is desirable therefore to find some mode of plotting, or even better to find a standard variety of graph paper, that gives a straight line instead of the integral shape. The straight line has many advantages; the number of readings required to fix the position of the curve is greatly reduced, interpolation is easy and rapid, extrapolation can be carried out with greater confidence and, finally, the consistency of the measurements is readily estimated from the scatter of the points. The last advantage is particularly valu-able when the data are obtained by direct microscopic examination alone, because they are influenced by the skill of the observer in estimating the relative size of areas, possibly also by undetected inhomogeneity of the specimen. A search for ways of representing the observations as a straight line yielded two methods which are described in this paper. The paper also includes an account of some interesting relations brought to light in applying these methods to the available experimental data. Usually the best way to derive such a method of plotting is to base it on established principles of chemistry and physics, as has been done, for example, for the temperature variation of the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction. But so little is known of the mechanism of the decom-position of austenite, and so little is available in the way of well established background for changes of this kind, that it is simpler to rely upon purely empirical means. Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry's history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Deep Dredging At Hammonton, calif., yuba consolidated Gold Fields has, within= the past two years, built its dredge No. 20. The company has operated continuously in that field since 1904, digging successively at maximum depths of 60 ft., 80 ft., 112 ft., and now 124 ft. below water level. The first dredges were equipped with buckets of 6 and 7½-cu. ft. capacity; six dredges operating in the field today have 18-cu. ft. buckets, digging now 65 to 124 ft. below water level. This paper presents the results and analysis of field trials of various magnetic instruments over anomalies ranging from 20 to 5000 gammas of vertical intensity. The following instruments were used: Askania vertical magnetometer, Wolfson vertical magnetometer (model M-I), Hotchkiss Superdips (used both parallel to and normal to the magnetic meridian, with several settings of the "sigma" angle), Lake Superior dip needle, and the dipping circle for measurements of inclination. The change in inclination over the measured anomalies ranged up to 4"; this caused pronounced changes in sensitivity of the Hotchkiss Superdip oriented parallel to the magnetic meridian. The variable sensitivity not only gives apparent displacement of crests of anomalies, particularly at high sensitivities, but also makes the data difficult or impossible to use in preparation of iso-anomaly maps. This weakness in field performance of the Superdip is shown to be eliminated by orienting the instrument normal to the magnetic meridian and measuring vertical intensity only, which in the latitude of upper Michigan is equal to 97 pct of the total intensity. The dip needle is seen to be relatively ineffectual for location of anomalies of less than 400 gammas. Introduction The U.S- Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Geological Survey Division of Michigan Department of Conservation, has for the past three years been engaged in a restudy of the Iron River-Crystal Falls iron mining district of upper Michigan. The bedrock in a large part of this area is covered with glacial deposits as much as 500-ft thick, and, inasmuch as some of the rocks have moderate to high magnetic permeability, extensive magnetic mapping has been done to assist in unraveling the complicated structure of the area. Several types of instruments have been used, and the major purpose of this paper is to present comparative data on the field performances of some of these instruments so as to aid others who face similar problems elsewhere to evaluate and choose the instruments best suited for the work. The paper is directed primarily to geologists and engineers rather than to geophysicists, although some familiarity with the instruments is presumed. The geology of the area consists of a complexly folded series of weakly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, including the iron formation, which rests on older greenstones. Although the iron formation itself is only locally magnetic, some of the beds stratigraphically above the iron formation are rather strongly so. By tracing these hanging wall magnetic anomalies valuable information is obtained from which the structure and distribution of the iron formation can be inferred. Critical anomalies range from 25 to 6000 gammas of vertical intensity. Many anomalies can be traced in part with the common dip needle, but detection of others requires more sensitive instruments.

The behavior of slime-sized particles in a flotation cell is neither well documented nor well understood. In general, slimes (or 'fines' as they will be alternatively called in this chapter) have been either ignored, eliminated, or treated empirically. Recently, however, some good experimental and theoretical work has been done that leads qualitatively to a clearer understanding of the problems involved. Fines are small particles that, owing to their smallness, behave differently from larger particles of the same material. The smaller the particle, the larger is its surface-to-mass ratio. The difference in the surface-to-mass ratio for a micron-sized particle and a centimeter-sized particle is 10,000 to 1. For our purposes we shall arbitrarily define any particle less than 10 µ 10-3 cm) as being a fine. This is generally considered the upper limit of colloidal-sized particles. Recently, the field of colloidal chemistry has successfully used the concept of the double layer to explain dispersion and flocculation of fine particles in a static system. Flotation, however, is a dynamic system due both to the turbulence of the liquid and to the coursing of the bubbles through the cell. Further more, a flotation system is a heterogeneous system in which there are a number of different types of particles which interact with one another. A further difficulty is that no two flotation systems are the same for minute quantities of a variety of common chemicals will alter the behavior of the system. These reasons make reproducible experimental results that can ex- plain fine-particle behavior difficult to obtain. In spite of these experimental difficulties, millions of tons of ore containing a large amount of fines are successfully floated every year. For example, at the Morning mill of American Smelting and Refining Co., a galena concentrate that was 42% -6 µ and a sphalerite concentrate that was 33% -9 µ were floated leaving a tailing that was 27% - 9 µ.l Ores that contain fines can generally be divided into two classes. In the first are those in which the valuable mineral tends to slime, such as galena and hematite. In the other class, one or more of the gangue minerals forms the slime; a typical example is barite. Though the problems due to the presence of fines are often the same in handling the two classes of ore, the method of handling them is different because of economic considerations. Nonmetallic mineral flotation is particularly affected by slimes, by either slime-coating effects or excessive reagent consumption. Though a given gangue mineral may not float under the conditions prevailing in the flotation cell, it may still be able to adsorb the collector. I£ it also slimes, a significant

A SURVEY of the technical literature concerned with oil well drilling methods and particularly with rate of penetration by various cutting media on different types of rock provides a mass of conflicting data. This is especially true with respect to, (1) the relative efficiency of diamond, rotary and percussion drilling operations; (2) the costs of the various types of drilling; and (3) the hardness factor of various types of rock and cutting media. The latter is the particular phase of the subject discussed here. The cause of the confusion may be attributed partially to a lack of 'basic knowledge concerning the physical properties of the cutting media and of individual types of rock. It is also due in part to a general lack of uniform standards in the industry for evaluating the hardness versus drillability of rocks while possible errors in interpretation by the authors of the various papers pertaining to the subject may be an additional cause of misunderstanding. The hardness of a mineral is defined by Dana' as "the resistance which a smooth surface offers to abrasion." Webster' states that hardness is "the cohesion of the particles on the surface of a body (as a mineral) as determined by its capacity to scratch another or be itself scratched." Rock hardness, although not usually defined in publications describing rocks, is assumed to be the same as the minerals which compose the rock or the resistance of the rock to abrasion. Drillability of a rock may be defined arbitrarily as the rate at which rock is penetrated by a definite type of drilling tool with the assistance of a specific type of cutting surface or medium and under speci- fied conditions as to speed of rotation and applications of pressure. Eventually the term penetrability may have to be employed to include any method of making boreholes in rocks, since methods other than those using conventional cutting surfaces are already in operation. A case in point is the jet piercing methoda which employs an oxy-acetylene flame as a means of penetration. The word hardness as used by the drilling fraternity has a variety of meanings which depend upon the type of drilling method employed. For example, in diamond drilling, hardness is interpretated as resistance to abrasion. In percussion drilling the term implies resistance to impact or indentation, while in rotary drilling, hardness is considered anal-agous to compressive strength. The three types of hardness—abrasion, impact and compression—are conflicting variables for different types of rock. Nevertheless, the term hardness is applied indiscriminately by the industry for the resistance of rock to penetration by any type of drilling technique. Abrasion Hardness Since 1818, Moh's scale of hardness, although only relative in nature, has been accepted universally as the method of measuring mineral and therefore rock hardness. An isothermal calorimeter suitable for measurements of heats of solution in liquid tin as solvent is described. Measurements of the heats of solution of gold, silver, copper, and a gold-silver alloy are reported. The heat of formation of this gold-silver alloy is also reported. HEATS of solution in liquids can be determined directly, but few such data have been published for metals as solvents. Knowledge of heats of solution is desirable because it contributes to the general understanding of energy relations in metallic solutions. Thermochemical measurements of this type also furnish answers to specific problems: For example, from the heats of solution of an alloy and of a mixture of its constituent elements in a given solvent, the heat of formation of the alloy may be found. Similarly, differences in the energy content of samples of the same metal in two different states, such as the annealed and cold worked states, may be determined. In the work reported here, gold, silver, and an alloy of gold and silver were dissolved in liquid tin at 240°C and gold, silver, and copper were dissolved in tin at 300 °C. The experiments yielded the heats of solution of these metals in tin. The heat of formation of the gold-silver alloy was also determined. The same calorimetric method is being used to measure the energy stored in metals during cold working and preliminary results have been published.' Equipment and Experimental Procedure The isothermal calorimeter used in this work, Fig. 1, consisted of a Dewar flask completely immersed in a constant-temperature salt bath. A long neck provided space for thermocouple leads and a stirrer shaft and permitted the injection of solute samples. The metal bath in the calorimeter flask was stirred at about 100 rpm by a small glass impeller driven by a constant-speed motor. The shaft of the stirrer passed through a Wilson vacuum seal.2 All measurements were made under vacuum in order to eliminate temperature disturbances resulting from gas convection and to prevent the oxidation of tin. The calorimeter flask was joined by an all-glass connecting line to a gas-control system which made possible the use of a protective atmosphere of deoxidized and dried hydrogen. At the operating temperature of the calorimeter tin oxide was not reduced by hydrogen, presumably because the reaction rate was too slow. Part of the closed system was a removable side tube through which the solute sample could be introduced and in which it was held at a temperature of 0°C prior to injection into the metal bath.
