The object of this paper is to describe the adaptation of electrical resistivity measurements to the particular case of exploration in which the surface is an expanse of water (river, lake, sea). Water in itself does not constitute an obstacle to electrical exploration. It is merely an overburden, which is fluid instead of being solid, and as a consequence the routine of the measurements has to be modified. Also, in many instances, the liquid under consideration is highly conductive (salt water). This introduces an additional difficulty into exploration work, and has to be overcome by the geophysicist. We do not propose to discuss here the basic principles of electrical resistivity measurements, which have been dealt with in various previous papers,' but will simply recall the two fundamental techniques which govern its field application: 1. Horizontal exploration, or method of the resistivity map, in which a series of electrical measurements are carried out at various stations, keeping the same electrode spacing. Thus, a horizontal layer of the subsoil, of a practically constant thickness, is explored. 2. Vertical exploration, or "vertical sounding"2 method, in which a seriesr of measurements is made with increasing electrode spacings at one or several stations. In this way, the apparent resistivity is determined at a given station for various increasing thicknesses of the ground.

INTRODUCTION The primary tool which is available to improve the stability of an open pit mine at a given slope angle is control of groundwater pressure. This paper sets out the methods by which water pressure control can be achieved in large mines in different materials. The emphasis of this paper is on large mine slopes because. these slopes exhibit the greatest need for groundwater control, the greatest economic benefit from groundwater control, and the greatest technical challenge in achieving groundwater control. STABILIZATION USING MTER PRESSURE CONTROL Groundwater pressures reduce the stability of slopes in two fundamental ways, as shown schematically in Figure 1. In the example, a horizontal failure surface intersects a vertical joint or weak zone. Water pressure acts: o On the base plane to reduce the normal force on the sliding surface and hence reduce frictional resistance to sliding, and o On the vertical back plane, to create a driving force for the system.

The stability of waste dumps depends to a great extent on the physical properties of the underlying foundation. These physical properties are evaluated through surface geotechnical surveys, subsurface exploration, and field and laboratory testing. Sufficient information must be obtained to define and assess the strength, consolidation, distribution, topographic and hydrogeologic properties for these materials. Important foundation data collected in the field include: surface infiltration rates, downhole hydraulic conductivities, ground water levels, bedrock structural parameters, soil types and soil thickness. Laboratory testing should identify the classification, strength, moisture content, hydraulic conductivity, attenuation and consolidation characteristics. Summarized in this paper are procedures and typical results of porphyry copper leach dump foundation investigations. Laboratory properties and design recommendations for potenia1 foundation liner materials are described. Back analysis and laboratory foundation strengths are compared. The topographic effect of the foundation on dump behavior is discussed and a foundation pore pressure monitoring experiment at the toe of an active waste dump is described.

THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are presented in some detail. Basic principles are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal. fields, and meth¬ods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various meth¬ods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment.

WHAT becomes of the water which must have filled the oil and gas sands at the time of deposition, has long puzzled students of oil and gas and has found expression in Munn's well known article on the hydraulic theory. Both Munn and Clapp have pointed out that in the Appalachian field the deeper sands carry increasingly less proportionate amounts of water. It seems to me probable that the principal source of oil and gas has been in the shales in proximity to the sands which now contain these products. The sand spits which mark off the lagoons from the sea comply particularly with the requirements of a limited sand imbedded in shales rich in organic matter. Cunningham Craig has objected to this view that the rich organic muds of lagoons are found only at the surface. That such muds do extend to considerable depth 1 am assured by Prof. Douglas W. Johnson, who has made an extensive study of the Atlantic Coast marshes. As any particular sand body becomes weighted by a heavier and heavier overburden, the result of increasing deposition, a part of the very large percentage of water in the uncompacted sand and mud is forced pout. The water percentage of freshly settled mud is vastly higher than that of the resultant shales, or even of a very porous sand. If beds of less compressible material meet or underlie the shales in question, there will. frequently be a lateral motion along such beds to some point where the upward movement will be resumed. We find in our laboratory work here that oil, gas, and water have extremely slight capacity for gravitational sorting while in a state of rest but when moving the gravitational sorting is readily accomplished. As the oil, gas, and water pass a body of larger pores, the gas, owing to its lack of capillary attraction, is retained in .the large pores.

AT the San Francisco meeting of the Institute last year, I presented, through the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas; some results of experiments on the roasting and leaching of concentrator tailings. After it became apparent that flotation rather than leaching was clearly the better method of handling the particular problem under consideration, before dismantling the experimental equipment, some data were secured on roasting and leaching the concentrate itself in competition with smelting. Some of the results obtained are given in the following paper and they a re of particular interest at this time in. view of the large quantities of flotation concentrates with their somewhat difficult smelting characteristics now being produced. A complete wet process? consists of roasting and leaching the calcines in dilute sulphuric acid produced from the roaster gases, roasting the residue with salt and leaching with dilute tower liquors (the well-known Longmaid-Henderson process) and recovering the copper, silver and gold by cementation or electrolysis or a combination of both. It is evident, however, that the residue from the first leaching, carrying about 20 per cent. of the copper and all of the silver and gold, can be smelted if preferable. In considering the application of the scheme to individual cases, it must be remembered that freight plays a. large part in any reduction process wherein smelting is not conducted at the, mouth of the mine, and that it is not practicable today to build small smelting plants for individual operations. The experiments may be grouped under four main heads: Roasting, leaching, chloridizing residue, and recovery of copper from solutions. The products of two concentrators were used: The Nacozari concentrates were the product of a large modern mill not using flotation, the copper mineral being largely chalcopyrite; and the Tyrone concentrates, the product of an experimental mill including flotation, the copper mineral being chiefly chalcocite. THIS investigation was started with the idea of determining whether copper-nickel mattes might not have a lower flowing temperature than copper mattes, and thus perhaps aid in accounting for the difficulty so far experienced in attempts at pyritically smelting copper-nickel ores. We have used the term flowing temperature to avoid confusion with the usual melting temperature. The idea at first was that there might be a greater viscosity range in the one matte than in the other. In the early experiments it was in our minds to determine the relative fluidity of the mattes at a given temperature. Looking to this end we tried pouring equal quantities of matte at the same temperature down an inclined graphite slab, and comparing the distances traveled. Results from such experiments were not satisfactory. We next tried pouring equal quantities at the same temperature through a drilled hole in an Acheson graphite crucible, timing the flow with a stop watch, the whole operation being carried out in the muffle. The flowing temperatures of the mattes tried in this way appeared to be about the same, and there was no marked difference in their fluidity when well fused. Oxidation gave some trouble. These experiments finally led to the adoption of the following apparatus which we thought at the time was wholly original with us, but which we have since found was described by W. McA. Johnson.' The tray used was a slab of graphite 8 in. long, 2 in. wide and ¼ in. thick. It had six holes, into each of which sat a cup of Acheson graphite. Centrally in the bottom of each cup was a vertically drilled hole 3/16 in. in diameter and ½ in. long. The mattes to be tested were put into the cups, in a solid piece. The cups were covered with inverted Battersea "A" cups. The tray was put into the muffle of a gas-fired furnace. Supports on .each end held the tray about 2 in. from the floor of the muffle. Udder

MANY aspects of the formation of the metastable w phase in titanium-transition metal alloys have been described in several recent papers.1-4 These papers have reviewed earlier work on the w phase and have further defined most of the important features related to the formation of this phase, e.g-., its crystal structure, composition, and morphology. There are, however, several important points regarding formation of the w phase in titanium alloys which have been described in less detail. Two of these are the relationship between lattice misfit and w phase morphology and the influence of lattice misfit on the mode of formation of the equilibrium a phase. In this communi- cation we will present transmission electron microscopy results relevant to these two points. The alloys used in this study were prepared by non-consumable electrode arc melting, each 30-g button being remelted a minimum of twelve times. The alloy compositions we have studied are listed in Table I. Thin foils were prepared using standard techniques described elsewhere. Two distinct c' phase morphologies have been reported in earlier papers. The phase is ellipsoidal in the Ti-Mo3 and Ti-Nbl system and cubical in the Ti-V3 system. Results of the present study show that the w phase is also cubical in Ti-Mn, Ti-Fe, and Ti-Cr alloys as illustrated in Fig. l(b) to (d). WHEN the A.I.M.E. was formed 75 years ago the bituminous coal industry was in its swaddling clothes, although it had been operating for more than a century and coal was being mined in every state now producing it, and its output had long passed that of anthracite. In 18/1, the value of bituminous coal was about seventy per cent of the value of all metals produced and more than one fifth of the value of all products of mines, both metallic and nonmetallic.[1a] While many of the operating mines then shipped by rail, most of the development was along waterways, although the canal era of transportation was nearly at its end. Coal mining is a heavy industry and one of the best measures of its progress is its output throughout the period. Fig. 1 shows this graphically from 1800 to 1945. From 1870 to 1910, the production-which is very nearly the consumption-almost doubled every decade, a most amazing growth. In 1918, in World War I, a peak was reached and a decline began, which ended in 1932. A gradual recovery then started, interrupted in 1938 but culminating in the record output of 1944, when, owing to World War II, a tonnage of 619,576,000 was produced. It is evident that the forces leading to the continuous increase ending in 1918 have spent themselves and that only unusual conditions will require so large a production again. THE first paper which appears in the published Transactions of our Institute is that read by our respected Secretary at its first meeting in Wilkes-Barre, in May, 1871. It is entitled The Geological Distribution of Mining Districts in the United States, and presents a brief but masterly review of what was known of the distribution of our deposits of useful minerals, particularly the metals, not only from a geographical but from .a geological stand-point. At the request of Dr. Raymond, I agreed, somewhat hastily, perhaps, to write for this occasion a brief sketch of the geological distribution of the deposits of the useful metals in this country, in the light of the increased knowledge of the present day. In the time given no personal investigation was possible, and as it was therefore out of the question to attempt to make anything that could be considered an original contribution to the history of our ore-deposits, I have been obliged to limit myself to an examination of such published data within my reach as bore upon this subject, and could be consulted in the brief time I have been able to give to it. Had the geological investigations undertaken by the Tenth Census been continued systematically by the United States Geological Survey or by the Eleventh Census, it might have been possible to make a fairly-complete review of the subject. A GRAPHICAL method of analyzing the data obtained from shallow earth-resistivity depth tests is presented. The method is based upon empirical results and has no theoretical basis. The usual apparent resistivity-electrode spacing curve is used together with a cumulative resistivity-electrode spacing curve plotted on the same sheet. The greatly reduced scale required for plotting the cumulative values of resistivity together with the effect of the summation of the individual resistivity values serves to minimize the effect of purely local surface anomalies and inadvertent errors of measurement. The point of intersection of tangents or straight lines drawn to intersect at zones of maximum curvature in the cumulative curve indicates the depth to the underlying material. Numerous figures are presented in which data from published reports and from recent field studies are analyzed and the results compared with actual depths established by borings or with depth values obtained by the use of theoretical methods of analysis. Smoothly rounded curves of apparent resistivity such as are often obtained in the field, and which have been a serious drawback to attempts to analyze the data empirically heretofore, appear to be susceptible to rather accurate analysis by the method described. The method is best suited to analyses involving shallow two-layer formations. It has been applied successfully, however, in analyzing the data obtained from tests made over shallow three-layer formations. As with most empirical methods, its chief advantage is its simplicity and ease of application.

DUring the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, mining, and preparation of barite in most of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract, including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors.2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.³ The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but the product is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. In recent years, increased attention is being paid to the application of oil-agglomeration technique for (a) improved recovery of low- ash clean coal, (b) effective beneficiation of low-grade coking coals and (c) removal of pyrite sulphur from high-sulphur coals. In this technique, which has been proved to be more effective than convention- al froth-flotation, advantage is taken of the oleo-philic nature of finely ground coal to separate it under controlled conditions from the associated minerals which are hydrophilic in nature. Unlike froth- flotation, no aeration is needed in the process and the concentrates which are obtained in the form of agglomerates or micro-pellets have easier dewatering characteristics. Optimization of operating variables in treating individual raw feed is a pre-requisite for the successful application of this process. A 10 gram batch unit was employed in the present test series. This paper presents - results from these investigations on such operating variables as (i) size of coal, (ii) amount of oil used, (iii) time of stirring, (iv) rate of stirring, (v) solid content in slurry and (vi) effect of conditioning.

During the history of man, the term concentration has had many meanings. Early in history, it may have been construed to mean sorting and smelting. Not many years ago, its definition included only the physical beneficiation processes. Today, and in this article, the term concentration is taking on the meaning of beneficiation and chemical processing, or either separately. An alternate definition could be: concentration is the process of recovering and upgrading an element or nonmetallic mineral so that the product can be used or refined for the needs of man. For the purpose of this article, concentration will have the same connotation as it does in the mineral industry, which has come to include processing methods such as leaching and chlorinization under this heading. Usually, smelting techniques and electrorefining are excluded and classified under the heading of refining. Using the broad definition of concentration, the areas of mining processing include not only the physical beneficiation processes and flotation but also hydrometallurgy and vapor-metallurgy. These methods include sorting, sizing, crushing and grinding, gravity concentrating, magnetic processing and flotation as well as hydrometallurgy and vapor- metallurgical processing.

It has long been comnlon knowledge that workers in anthracite are prone to develop a disabling disease of the lungs. Some of the earliest scientific contributors dealing with anthracosis were: Pearson1, in his report in 1813, on the coloring matter of the bronchial glands and black spots in the lungs; Stratton2, in 1838, who first termed the condition anthracosis; Greenhow3, who reported to the pathological society in 1865, on the Black Lung of the Collier, and Pick4 in 1870, who reported on the chemical composition of the ash of a collier's lungs. Visconti5, in 1870, is accredited with being the first to use the term "silicosis" to denote the pathological condition of the lungs resulting from the inhalation of silica. Rovida6 confirmed the reports of Pick and Visconti in 1871, in his report on a case of silicosis and chemical examination of the lungs for silica content. The relationship of pulmonary infection, as associated with disabling pneumoconiosis affecting the coal miner, has frequently been discussed. While most reports have emphasized the role of infection, there has been some disagreement regarding the prevalence of tuberculosis among those suffering from anthracosis. The report by Wainwright and Nichols7 in 1905 has frequently been cited to show that the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among coal miners was less than that among the general population. It was their opinion that pulmonary tuberculosis was more prevalent among the miners' families than among the miners themselves. Collis and Gil-christ, in 1928 in their study of the Effects of Dust upon Coal Trimmers, concluded that among such workers there was an excess of deaths from bronchitis and pneumonia but not from pulmonary tuberculosis. FREQUENTLY the careful engineer puts the word porphyry in quotation marks or precedes it with "so-called," when he writes of the Porphyry Copper mines. This is done by way of serving notice that he is aware that the term is not a precise one, though no one who is informed on the subject would in any event misinterpret it. The name originated from the fact that the rock containing the copper at Utah Copper, Morenci, Nevada Consolidated, and Braden-the first four to be developed-was in each instance known as porphyry. The term was convenient; and when Ray, Miami, and inspiration came along they fell into the Porphyry category even though the ore consisted essentially of a rock called schist instead of porphyry. The word is not inclusive enough; nor as a matter of fact is it sufficiently exclusive. Numerous copper deposits occur in porphyry rocks that are not Porphyry Coppers, paradoxical as it may seem. Desiring to be more accurate and at the same time to use a word that is in some degree descriptive, various engineers have adopted the expression "disseminated copper deposits." This alludes to the characteristic scattering of grains or specks of copper minerals more or less uniformly throughout the mass of the rock. Yet here again the implication is not entirely accurate, for the following reason: in some of the ores, the proportion of copper minerals "peppered" in the rock is small, compared with that which coats the walls of cracks and minute fissures; and that which is found as veinlets along planes of fracture. Many geologists have extended their interpretation of the term disseminated to include both types of mineral occurrence. The present truce in litigation between Western smelting and ranching interests gives opportunity for a summary of the results achieved by metallurgists in condensing fume and de-acidifying furnace-gases. In the absence of complete records of past experiments, there ha's been a good deal of unliecessary duplication of attempts and failures. Yet, especially uilder the recent policy of our large corporations, looking to the economic recovery of the values of by- and waste products, . original and, in some cases, effective measures have been developed by American metallurgists. In the case of Bliss us. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the Montana Suprenle Court, recognizing the progressive efforts made to render the flue-gases innocuous, and the value to the community of the smelting company's operations, refused to hamper its work, and returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. In the trial, the experimental farms of the company ill the so-called "aff'ected region" were proved to be thriving perfectly, showing that immunity was guaranteed to vegetation and stock by tlle wide distribution of the sulyhurous acid gas in the dry air of Montana. Indeed, L. S. Austin has proved that by the time the fume is 4,000 ft, distant from the stack, the percentage of sulphurous acid has been diminished from 2.28 to 0.00045; and Angus Smith has shown that rain must contain 40 parts per million of free acid before vegetation is affected. The arsenic in the stack-gases is but a very small part of the original content of the ore, of which 80 per cent. and over is rejected in the coilcentrator and furnace waste-products or recovered in the flues, Nevertheless, neither the peace in Montana nor the armistice

During colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still functioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned prospects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investigate the validity of the reports. According to the reports of Baron Eschwege, he succeeded in extracting some 30,000 Oitavos (about 105 kg.) during the first few years, but the production costs exceeded the value of the gold obtained.

WILLIAM B. PRICE* and PHILIP DAVIDSON, ? Waterbury, Conn. (written discussion?).-A few months ago we became interested in deter-mining the properties of. pure nickel as a metal for certain uses and arranged, in cooperation with the International Nickel Co., a series of tests on cold-rolled so-called pure nickel and both longitudinal and transverse specimens annealed at 100° intervals from 250° to 1050° C. Since our tests confirmed; in a general way, the observation put forth by Messrs. Browne and Thompson, they are given at this time. A bar of hot-rolled nickel about 9 in. (23 cm.) wide and 1/2 in. (12.7 mm.) thick made by the International Nickel Co. -of grade A stock, analyzing nickel plus cobalt 98.48 per cent., iron 0.67 per cent., manganese 0.27 per cent., carbon 0.07 per cent., silicon 0.162 per cent., sulfur 0.033 per cent., and copper 0.22 per cent., was cold-rolled down to a final thickness of 0.134 in., malting a 73.2 per cent. reduction by rolling. Test specimens, 9 by 1 in., cut parallel (marked longitudinal) and normal (marked transverse) to the direction of rolling were milled to give a test section 2 5/8 in. long by 0.5 in. wide. Three specimens each, longitudinal and transverse, were annealed at one time in a nichrome-ribbon-wound tube furnace. The temperatures were taken with a Pt-PtRh thermo-couple in conjunction with an Engelhard millivoltmeter. An annealing period of .) 2 hr. plus 25 min. preheating was used in all cases. Sclero-scopic and Brinell hardness tests and static tensile tests were made on the rolled and annealed specimens. The tensile tests are shown in graphic form in Fig. 7. The Brinell and scleroscopic values are given herewith.
