WEBSTER'S dictionary gives the following definition for "efficiency": "Effective operation as measured by a comparison of actual and possible results." Engineers think of this definition in terms of the ratio of output to input, and since they learn early in their careers that output cannot be greater than input, they usually consider a machine to be 100 pct efficient if it operates perfectly, and to be 0 pct efficient if it performs no function at all. Hence, values of efficiency between 0 and 100 pct reflect how well or how poorly a machine has performed; and any method of calculation for determining efficiency that does not show 0 pct when no function has been performed, and 100 pct when a perfect job has been done, is looked upon with skepticism. The literature on performance of coal cleaning equipment contains many references to efficiency of performance, but there is no unanimous agreement among the authors as to how the efficiency should be determined. Numerous methods of calculation have been proposed from time to time, most of which attempt to fulfill the definition of efficiency by comparing output to input, using float and sink data or some other characteristic, such as dry ash content, as a measure. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of the methods advocated in the past meets the requirements of a practical engineer in judging cleaning plant performance, because the formulas previously advocated do not confine numerical values of efficiency between 0 and 100 pct, and the literature does not contain an explanation of the meaning of the formulas under various conditions of operation. Therefore, the following formula, based on Yancey's concept of misplaced material,' is proposed as a measure of efficiency which will conform with the requirement that the values of efficiency must be confined between 0 and 100 pct: Quantitative Efficiency = 100.0 — (pct wt sink* in cleaned coal + pct wt float* in refuse)t • At gravity of separation effected by cleaning equipment. t Total product basis of the size of material under study. It will be noted from this formula that an actual separation between cleaned coal and refuse must be effected by the cleaning equipment before the formula can be used; also, that improperly distributed material in the products must be determined at the gravity of separation, rather than at some arbitrary test gravity. It will further be noted from this formula that the weight of cleaned coal recovered and the weight of refuse rejected by the equipment have their proper influence, because the sink in the cleaned coal and the float in the refuse are expressed in the equation as a per cent weight of the total products of a definite size discharged from the plant. This formula has one other important characteristic, in that it requires no knowledge of the feed to the cleaning unit. Comparison of data on the products from a cleaning unit with the feed to the unit can lead to many worthwhile conclusions. but not in regard to the efficiency of separation effected by the equipment. The reason for this is that mechanical fracture of many pieces of the feed occurs during the cleaning process; and in some processes crushers are deliberately incorporated in the flow to produce size degradation to free impurities from cleaned coal, thereby altering the washability characteristics of the material while in process. When such size degradation occurs in a cleaning process, it is quite possible that this crushing will result in a reduction in ash content in the finer sizes of cleaned coal when compared with the raw coal feed, even though no true separation has been effected. This is due to the fact that the finer sizes have been "sweetened" by the crushing of cleaned coal from some coarser size. Many formulas advocated in the past show high cleaning efficiencies

All ferrous alloys can be made brittle by straining at sufficiently low temperatures. However, the changes in mechanical properties for different ferrous materials with decreasing testing temperature do not appear to follow any universal law. In particular, complex effects of testing temperature have been observed if cold worked steels were subjected to tensile tests at low temperatures. EFFECTS OF PRESTRAINING AT A TEMPERATURE ABOVE THE TESTING TEMPERATURE ON THE FRACTURE CHARACTERISTICS‡ A considerable amount of data has been presented by a number of investigators on the fracture characteristics of various cold worked steels.' These data usually relate to a two-step procedure first used by Davidenkov,² consisting of stretching by tension to a certain strain or " prestraining" at room temperature and then completing the tensile test, or "testing" at the temperature of liquid air. On the basis of data of this type made available to date, ferrous alloys can be classified into two groups with respect to their fracture characteristics observed on testing at a low temperature after prestraining at room temperature. Very complex phenomena have been observed for all annealed steels. On the other hand, some observations indicate that steels in certain other conditions represent a fundamentally simpler relation. In considering the effect of prestraining at one temperature on the properties obtained at some lower temperature, it should be expected that any cold work reduces the ductility retained in proportion to the magnitude of the cold work. However, the test data presented to date indicate that only heat treated (quenched and tempered) steels appear to conform to this expectation, according to the very limited test data in Fig 1, presented by McAdam, Geil and Mebs. This series of tests, Fig 1, shows that the retained ductility became smaller the larger the prestrain. However, this decrease is less than the amount of prestrain or, in other words, less than the decrease in ductility at the prestraining temperature. These effects of prestraining are fundamentally identical with those observed by Bridgman3 when a steel was prestrained (in tension) under hydrostatic pressure and then subjected to a regular tension test. It appears, therefore, that the basic effect of prestraining under conditions which yield a higher ductility than the (subsequent) testing procedure, consists of gradually increasing the total ductility of the metal from the initial low value of testing to the higher value of prestraining. On the other hand, all annealed steels, if cold worked by tension at room temperature and then tested at a lower temperature, provided that some ductility is retained, showed a far more complex behavior than that discussed above. This relationship is exemplified by Fig 2, for three pearlitic steels.4,5 These particular steels were selected because of the various shapes of their ductility-prestrain curves. All three steels, and any other investigated so far, suffered a rapid decrease in retained (and consequently also in total) ductility when subjected to small pre-strains. Then, after exceeding a certain prestrain it was generally observed that the ductility recovered.* This rather complex behavior of annealed steels may be tentatively correlated with the presence of stretcher strains at small restrains. Heat treated steels do not exhibit stretcher strains. This fact might possibly explain their simpler prestrain-retained ductility relationship. The destructive effect of these stretcher strains may possibly be associated with the presence of triaxiality, which may occur in any highly non-uniform stress and strain state (and which is retained as residual stress after unloading). Even a small degree of triaxiality may then cause a reduction in ductility, or even embrittlement at a sufficiently low testing temperature. A microscopic X-ray diffraction technique was employed for the simultaneous study of the behavior of several families of lattice planes, whose local orientatiotz changes are manufestations of internal distortions resulting from specimen deformation. Photographs taken using aluminum were single crystals 1/64 in. In diam are presented which illustrate the appearance of various types of deformation- or growth- induced structural variations. Slip and lattice bending were detected in tensile tests for strains as small as 0.1 pct. Evidence of deformation bands, lineage structure, and void formation wns also shown. AmONG the most important methods of studying internal stresses in metals is the utilization of various X-ray techniques. The general subject of X-ray metallography has been treated in a most excellent manner by Taylor,1 and the use of X-rays for the direct observation of imperfections in crystals has recently been reviewed in an article by Newkirk2 and in the book edited by Newkirk and Wernick.3 Since the inception of metallographic X-ray analysis, there have been numerous technological developments and refinements, each with its particular advantages and disadvantages and, acrording to these, its particular applications. X-ray diffraction techniques can be divided into two general categories, that of X-ray diffraction microscopy and that of X-ray diffraction macroscopy. In the former are included such methods as those of Berg-Barrett, Lang, and Schultz2,3 which are concerned with microscopic imperfections such as dislocations. The second category includes all work concerned with the study of the condition of a crystal lattice structure as indicated by the marroscopic detail in its diffraction patterns. An example of this is the study of the diffraction manifestations of inhomogeneous plastic deformation as manifested by formation of deformation bands and inhomogeneous lattice rotations. The method used in the present investigation was an X-ray diffraction macroscopy technique. The geometry and analytical aspects of the method were similar to those of Julien and Cullity.4,5 The source was collimated with a single slit in a manner simi- lar to the "parallel beam'' method of Barth and Hosemann6 except that a continuous spectrum of radiation was employed. The apparatus produced large-beam transmission Laue patterns of thin cylindrical aluminum-wire crystals, which were deformed either in tension or torsion. Although the conventional X-ray target and interposed slit were not capable of the high resolution obtainable with a fine-focus X-ray source as employed in a microfocus apparatus, resolution was a secondary consideration in our technique, and was sacrificed to obtain sufficient intensity along a sizable length of the specimen. By using a grid indexing technique similar to that of Barth,7 we were able to study several diffraction lines from various planes simultaneously. The results of these tests give additional information with regard to the inhomogeneous deformation of single crystals, and the indexing procedure used provides a correlation between portions of the test specimen and portions of a diffracted beam. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The experimental arrangement used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. A source of continuous X radiation from a vertically mounted Machlett X-ray tube possessing a copper target and operated at 20 kv and 10 ma was passed down a horizontal lead tube 80 cm long which terminated in an adjustable vertical brass slit. The slit opening was adjusted to correspond with the diameter of the test specimen. In front of the brass slit it was possible to place a screen wire mesh, one horizontal strand of which was a lead wire which served as a fiduciary mark, the screen itself serving as an indexing system as will be described later. A simple radioactive tracer technique is used to measure the diffusion coefficient of calcium ion in molten slags. In a slag of 40 pct Ca0-40 pct Si0,-20 pct Al203, Dc " at 1450°C is 1.3x10-6 cm' sec-'. THE application of the principles of thermodynamics to steel and iron making problems has proved so fruitful that the kinetic approach has tended to be neglected. It seems probable that in some reactions the rate-determining step is the dif-fusivity of the reactants or of the products. But knowledge of the diffusion coefficients of the constituents of liquid slag and metal is singularly lacking. The present work was undertaken as a first step toward supplying such data for slags. Furthermore, any additional information on the physical properties of liquid slags might be expected to help in elucidating their structure. It is essentially a preliminary investigation, the course of which was determined more by the necessity of establishing a method than by the immediate intrinsic interest of the results. For example, the selection of calcium ion to be studied was dictated by the suitability of the isotope Ca45 in that it is a simple emitter with a long half-life. Of the other ions commonly encountered in slags, the isotopes of iron and manganese have relatively complex radiations as well as the normal disadvantage of requiring control of the oxygen potential of the atmosphere; Mg27 and Al29 have half-lives measured only in minutes; Si3' has a simple decay process but its half-life of 2.8 hr is too short for preliminary studies; the only useful oxygen isotope is the stable O18; and there remain only sulphur and phosphorus both of which have suitable isotopes but were rejected as being of less fundamental interest than calcium. Similarly a lime-alumina- silica slag was used in preference to calcium silicate primarily because of its low melting point and its capacity to form a glass on fairly rapid cooling. Literature Review Very few studies of diffusion in liquid silicate systems have been reported. In order to determine the origin of diopside inclusions in felspathic rocks, Bowen1 investigated the diffusion between diopside and various mixtures of albite and anorthite. Platinum crucibles were used with diopside, the heavier of the two liquids, forming the lower half of the cell and diffusion taking place against gravity. Change in concentration along the diffusion path was found by measuring the refractive index of the quenched glass. Nearly thirty years later McCallum and Barrett2 used essentially the same method to determine the diffusion coefficient of lime in lime-alumina-silica slags. In this case the interest was to find the rate-determining step in the process of slag attack on refractory materials. In an investigation of the kinetics of the sulphur reaction, Derge, Philbrook, and Goldman8 determined the diffusion coefficient of sulphur in a typical blast furnace slag by the simple procedure of melting a slag containing 2 pct S over an identical slag sulphur-free. They make no claim to a high degree of accuracy but suggest that D, is of the order of 10-6 cm2 sec-l. Other high temperature liquid diffusion studies have been concerned with metals. Holbrook, Furnas, and Joseph4 determined the diffusion coefficients of silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, manganese, and carbon in liquid iron by immersing a small carbon crucible containing pure iron-carbon alloy in a large vessel containing iron with a high concentration of the particular element. Their results were confirmed by Paschke and Hauttmann5 using a similar method. PHASE relations in the system CoO-SiO2 have been determined as a basis for further investigations of thermodynamic properties of olivine solid solutions involving Co2SiO4 as a component. Previous data on the system CoO-SiO2 are incomplete or uncertain. Biltz and Lemke1 determined the melting point of cobalt orthosilicate as 1345°C , but Asanti and Kohlmeyer2 have later found a considerably higher temperature, 1420°C. The latter authors also studied melting relations of one mixture on the CO side and two mixtures on the SiO2 side of the orthosilicate composition and sketched a tentative phase diagram for a limited composition range of the system. However, no phase identification was carried out, and the authors left unanswered the question of the possible existence of a stable meta-silicate phase. Greig3 showed that a 90 wt pct SiO2-10 wt pct Co mixture at 1725°C consists of two immiscible liquid phases. The quenching technique was used in the present investigation. Mixtures of high-purity cobalt oxide ("Fisher Certified") and dehydrated silicic acid ("Baker Analyzed") were equilibrated in air atmosphere. The samples were then quenched to room temperature and the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination. The samples were kept in small envelopes made from thin (0.0004 in.) platinum foil. Thermodynamic data which have become available recently for Pt-Co alloys4 were used to check that the losses of COO from the oxide samples by alloying of cobalt with platinum in the present investigation were too small to change significantly the compositions of the oxide material during the equilibration. A vertical tube furnace with an 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh resistance winding was used in runs up to 1510°C. Temperatures in these runs were measured with a Pt vs 90 pct Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the melting point of diopside (CaMgSi2O6, 1391.5?C). The given temperatures as measured by this technique are estimated to be accurate to *5°C. Quench runs at temperatures above 1650°C were made with a modified Roberts and Morey5 strip furnace, using strip resistors composed of a 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh alloy. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was calibrated against the liquidus temperature of a mixture composed of 10 wt pct CaO, 90 wt pct SiO2 (1707°C). The temperatures measured with this technique have an estimated accuracy of +15°C. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. Only one intermediate phase, the orthosilicate Co2SiO4 with olivine-type structure, is stable in addition to the end members cobalt oxide and silica. The melting point of the orthosilicate was found to be 1415" ± 5°C. The metastilicate CoSiO3 is not stable at the temperatures of the present investigation. The two eutectic points in the system CoO-SiO2 where COO plus olivine, and olivine plus silica, coexist with liquid were found to be 72 wt pct COO and 1407°C and 63 wt pct COO and 1381°C, respectively. The melting point of cobalt oxide in air was taken as 1745?C, based on the previous data of Aukrust and Muan.6 Within limits of error (+ 5?C), identical eutectic temperatures to those determined in air were found when two representative mixtures were equilibrated at 1 atm O2 pressure and in an atmosphere of 84 vol pct CO2, 16 vol pct H2. This suggests that changes in oxidation state of cobalt in the condensed phases are not significant as far as their effect on the phase relations are concerned. This inference was substantiated by failure to detect7 any "excess oxygen" (i.e., oxygen in excess of that contained in Co2SiO4) in a sample of orthosilicate composition equilibrated in air 10°C above the liquidus temperature and subsequently quenched to room temperature. A galvanic cell, using liquid MgCl2 or MgC12-CaC12 mixtures as the electrolyte, has been used to determine activities in Mg-A1 liquid alloys between 700' and 880°C. The incovporation of a chlorine electrode in the cell also allowed measurements to be made of the standard free energy of formation of MgCl2(l). The results are shown to be in good agreement with thermo-chetrlical values from the literature, and this is taken as evidence that the small, known solubility of magnesium in iMgCl2 introduces no significant error in galcanic cell measurements. Within experimental error, the activity coefficients and relative partial molar enthalpies at 800°C are shown to be represented by the following "subregular" solution equations: logy~~ =-0.68(1 -xMgj3 log yAL =-1.02(1 - XMf + 0.68(1 - XMf H.M = -4400(1 - %)3 / cal Mg 7Ag' HZ =-6600(1 - xA1)' + 4400(1 - XMf cal SCHNEIDER and toll' have used a transpiration technique to measure the vapor pressures of magnesium over Mg-A1 alloys between 544" and 594°C. amsstad,' however, has since suggested that the extrapolation to zero flow rate, used by these authors in interpreting their apparent pressure vs flow rate data, gives unreliable results. Rogers, Tomlinson, and Richardson,3 in interpreting the results of solution equilibria between Mg-A1 alloys and liquid MgC12, also considered the measurements of Schneider and Stoll to be unreliable and preferred to derive activities for the alloys from the earlier boiling point determinations of ~eit~ebel~ and the partial molar heats recommended by Kubaschewski and ~atterall.~ These latter heats were based substantially on the early calorimetric work of Kawa-kami but, unfortunately, his work on other systems has sometimes been found to be inaccurate.7 Rogers et al., in the above-mentioned paper,3 tentatively concluded that the most likely species responsible for the limited solubility (0.3 mole pct at 800°C) of magnesium in MgC12 were Mg° (neutral) and Mg2++. Two more recent studies8,9 have supported Mg2++ as the soluble species. In the present study, activities in Mg-A1 alloys have been determined by means of a galvanic cell involving liquid MgCl2 or MgC12CaCl, mixtures as the electrolyte. Since the reactive nature of magnesium precluded simple Faraday yield experiments, a chlorine electrode was incorporated in the cell in order that the performance of the cell could be checked by measurements of the heat and free energy of formation of MgC12. This procedure was considered necessary since it has been suggested1' that the solubility of a metal in a molten salt might introduce electronic conductivity; also, previous determinations of the standard electrode potential for MgC12 differed by as much as 70 mv11-13 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Analyses of the materials used in preparing the alloys and the electrolyte mixtures are presented in Table I. The alloys were prepared by induction melting weighed amounts of the metals in a graphite crucible held under an argon atmosphere. Pure anhydrous magnesium chloride was prepared by heating the mixture MgCl, . 6H20 +NH4C1(1:1) to 650°C, followed by melting under dry argon. The melting point of the dry MgC12 was found by differential thermal analysis to be 714.8oC, which compares well with the accepted value of 714C.14 This agreement was taken to be an indication of the high purity of the dried salt. September 1981 I'm here today to report on a revolution -- a revolution in the way the Federal Government looks at energy. I'm not talking about a simple change in the relative emphasis on sources -- such as more recognition for coal and nuclear power, with less rhetoric about "soft- technology." Nor am I describing a mere change in focus -- from the demand side to the supply side. And I am not referring exclusively to our obvious goal of budget cuts. No, I'm here to discuss a fundamental change in Federal direction -- one that started as soon as President Reagan was inaugurated, and one that is articulated in the National Energy Policy Plan he sent to Congress in July. That brief policy document was backed up by three volumes of supporting data; but I think I can catch it's flavor for you in just three phrases: * First, various energy forms complete with each other and complement one another. * Second, fair competition among them (which includes honest pricing) will give us the best "energy mix." • And, finally there may be ligitimate arguments about where Federal responsibility in regard to energy spills over into Federal interference; but it's about time we drew the distinction -- and eliminated the latter. This Administration's national energy policy is quite different from any we have had in recent years. It is tuned to human nature and changing times. We are seeking the best practical solutions in the energy -a lot better than the ones we have been offered before, but still something less than perfection. One way we do that is by counting on a fully informed public to guide it's own destiny. And, instead of treating energy as an isolated entity, we recognize it as part of the overall economy. The President's Program for Economic Recovery is as much a factor in energy policy as the specific actions of the Department of Energy. One striking difference from the past energy policy 1s that this policy plan does not say: "In 1985 we will -produce so many hundreds of millions of tons of coal: . . . or . . . "By the end of this century the Nation will be deriving X percent of it's electricity from wind generators." Unfortunately, targets like these are what many people have come to expect from the Federal Government -- and what they think of as energy policy, whether the figures hold up in the long run or not. But . . . think about it! Nether the Department of Energy nor any other part of the Federal Government produces coal, or mines uranium, or manufactures solar collectors. There are only a few sections of the country where the Federal Government generates and sells electricity. So it does not take any great insight to recognize that the amount of energy we will produce or consume as a Nation In the future depends on many factors beyond direct government action. And those future totals cannot be predicted precisely, anyway -- by the Government or by anybody else. According to our way of thinking, the choices should be up to the people. When the free market works within a healthy economy, individuals express their preferences in the marketplace -- adjusting the balance of all energy factors continually in a way that no computer could be programmed to reflect perfectly. So, instead of having the Government issue a rigid set of numerical goals, our main concern simply is that there be enough energy. We want the Nation itself to decide how much that should be, what form it should take, and how that energy should reach consumers. The marketplace decides. Considering the recent past, this is indeed a revolutionary idea. It has some pitfalls, and we won't reach this ideal of free choice overnight. But that is where we are headed. And I'll offer some evidence in a few minutes that the policy has already started working. First, let me give you some of it's highlights: 1) Nobody who appreciates the philosophical underpinnings of this Administration will be surprised that the energy policy shows faith In domestic energy production and the supply side of the economy; but it also recognizes the important role of energy conservation -- the wise and efficient use of energy resources.

VARYING in thickness and in number from place to place, coal seams in the Canadian Rockies also range in pitch from nearly horizontal to vertical, sometimes with overturns. Over the entire coal-bearing area there are considerable differences of rank in coals of the same geological age, and there are marked differences in ash content and wash-ability characteristics. Correlation of seams at mining operations within a few miles of each other has often proved impossible. These factors influence mining methods, and, of course, production results. The oldest coal formations of western Canada are of Lower Cretaceous age, as the carboniferous sediments are marine and contain no coal. Coal is also present in formations of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. The rank of coal varies from semi-anthracite in some operations in the Kootenay and Luscar formations of the Lower Cretaceous in the Rockies to lignite in the Tertiary fields of the Saskatchewan prairies. Fig. 1 shows the general extent of the formations. The pitching seams, chiefly Lower Cretaceous, occur in the western belt of the Rocky Mountain foothills and the eastern slopes of the Rockies themselves. (The road to Tent Mt. strip pit, elevation 7000 ft, is shown on p. 832.) Formations extend from the U. S.-Canadian boundary for several bundred miles in Alberta and continue for a similar distance in British Columbia. Present geological estimates show a probable reserve of the order of 25,000 million tons of coal ranging from high volatile bituminous to semi-anthracite, with a large percentage of coking coal, constituting one of the major world reserves of that type. It should be noted that although the quoted estimate probably errs on the conservative side, the question of access to the seams in a mountainous terrain will always be a problem; a wide divergence may exist between actual reserves and the quantities of coal economically recoverable. An excerpt from the Canadian government Report of the Royal Commission on Coal 1946 states that conditions favorable to coal formation were intermittent and these intervals relatively brief in comparison with periods in which no coal was formed. Conditions were favorable to the growth or accumulation of vegetation in one area, while fresh water sediments and marine shales were being deposited in other areas. During periods of emergence the coal deposits were subjected to erosion or were covered by coarse sands and gravels from the mountains, whereas during submergence they were covered by fine clays deposited in embayments of the sea. During some of the periods of coal formation, volcanic activity deposited beds of fine volcanic ash and dust with the coal-forming vegetation. Coal deposits reach their greatest development in the mountains and thin rapidly to the east into the plains area, where they are deeply buried beneath younger sediments. For example, in the Fernie area of southeastern British Columbia there are in places 22 seams having an aggregate thickness of 150 ft in a stratigraphic interval of 3500 ft, whereas at Cole-man in the Alberta Crowsnest area the measures are only 800 ft in thickness and contain a maximum of five seams aggregating about 47 ft of coal. At Belle-vue, 10 miles further east, the measures are reduced to 430 ft with only three seams aggregating about 37 ft of coal. Subsequently the tremendous forces involved in the upthrust of the Rocky Mountains produced great displacement of the coal-bearing formations and at the same time a change in geologically young coals from low to high rank. The floor or footwall of most seams consists of carbonaceous shales, which are almost as adaptable to bending as the coal seams themselves. The seams show very few cleats or cleavage planes and have been so weakened structurally that as mined 50 pct or more will pass through a ¼-in. screen, seldom

A comprehensive analysis of the crystallographic and metallographic structure of several Al-CuAl, lamellar eutectic grains solidified under equilibrium conditions has been performed. A consistent pattern was discovered which was interpreted in terms of a detailed atomistic model of an interface describable as: Interface II {111} AL 11 {211} <101>Al <120> ? Several arguments are presented to substantiate the theory. It is compared in detail with another interface model characteristic of the Wid-manstatten precipitate of CuAl2 in A1 at low Cu levels. In addition, a concept is proposed to help explain the structure of the compound CuAl2. It has been shown that the eutectic alloy between A1 and CuA1, can be forced to solidify as substantially parallel lamellae throughout a relatively large volume&apos; by appropriately controlling the solidification parameters of growth rate, thermal gradients, and impurity level and by causing solidification to proceed in a unidirectional fashion from one end of an ingot to the other. A typical ingot solidified in this manner shows three distinct zones along the length of the ingot, Fig. 1. At the head end is a region consisting of many different grains, some of which are elongated slightly in the direction of solidification. After a few centimeters of growth, this polygrained region gradually merges into the second zone which consists of a very few elongated coarse grains. The third zone at the tail end is a region of eutectic colonies caused by segregation of impurities. Microscopic examination of transverse and longitudinal sections of the ingots reveals that during the initial stages of growth (zone I) the lamellar structure is frequently highly distorted and twisted but that it straightens out in zone 11. This characteristic pattern suggests that nucleation of a eutectic grain begins randomly at the head end of the ingot, and that some particular orientation relationship between the phases is more favorable from an energy consideration than others for one reason or another, so that some grains grow and others which are less favorably oriented do not. The favorably oriented or "low energy" grains continue to grow until excess solute rejected at the advancing liquid-solid interface destroys the parallel lamellar structure by forming a cellular rather than a substantially planar interface. When this occurs, the parallel lamellae fan out and eutectic colonies are formed because the lamellae grow perpendicular to the local interface. Questions naturally arise as to the crystallographic nature of the "low energy" grains. What do the grains which persist into zone II have in common? Can this explain the stability of such grains during growth? To answer the first question it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae of each phase relative to one another. This has been done for Al-CuAl2 eutectic alloys by two different techniques on specimens prepared in different ways.2&apos;3 The results were different from each other and from a third orientation relationship between A1 and CuA1, reported for overaged A1-Cu alloys.4 The three orientation relationships are summarized below to illustrate their similarities and their differences. The angular spiral lining system reduces energy consumption and grinding media consumption in grate discharge ball milk. This paper discusses the effect of this lining system on mill product size distribution. Performance comparison of a grinding circuit outfitted with angular spiral liners in ball mills are made with respect to standard double wave-liner installations. The angular spiral lining system was developed by Waagner-Biro of Austria. The installation of this lining system at Magma Copper Co. is the first of its kind in a grate discharge ball mill used for wet grinding.

The Bureau of Mines has pursued a program of research on mine illumination that has defined the coal miner&apos;s illumination needs. St. Joe Minerals Corporation, recognizing the need for improving the illumination of the working place in their mines, entered into a cooperative research agreement with the Bureau of Mines to utilize the Bureau’s expertise in this field. Some similarity in the environment, in which coal and hard rock miners work, has allowed the application of developed coal mine illumination technology and equipment to be utilized in hard rock, room and pillar mines.

Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pretreatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulfides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.

Jet impingement produces two mechanisms to clean the bottom of a borehole during jet-bit drilling operations. One is an impact-pressure wave in the immediate area of jet impingement. The other is crossflow, which spreads across the bottom away from the pressure wave. Measurements of the vertical distribution of the cross-flow at several positions beneath a 4 3/4-in. tricone jet bit in a laboratory model show that the maximum velocity in the crossflow is directly proportional to the square root of the product of the rate of flow and the velocity of the jets through the nozzles (QV). Other measurements in the laboratory model show that gradients in the impact-pressure wave are directly proportional to the jet QV if the diameters of the nozzles are held constant. Consistency of the basic relationships through changes in the Reynolds numbers of the jets from 31,000 to 93,000 suggests that the laboratory results should be representative of typical flow in field operations having higher Reynolds numbers. Estimates of the impact-pressure waves under conditions other than those in the jet-bit model may be made by comparison with a less complex model—impingement of a jet against an unrestricted flat surface normal to the jet. Equations derived from current jet technology describe the wave in this simple system for a wide range of conditions. INTRODUCTION The efficiency of rotary drilling operations is strongly linked to the efficiency with which cuttings are removed. Cuttings remaining on the bottom of the borehole will impede further penetration by the bit until they are removed. Wasteful regrinding is prevented if the fluid circulated past the bit removes cuttings as rapidly as they are made. Most investigations of bottom-hole cleaning under bits have been concerned with the rate-of-penetration effects of bit type, nozzle configuration, fluid properties, pressure gradients and utilization of hydraulic horsepower. These investigations have shown that drilling muds, weighted to keep the pressure in the borehole greater than in adjacent formations and carrying material which forms a filter cake, apparently plaster cuttings against the bottom, making them difficult to remove. In addition to a demonstration of the factors causing poor cleaning, the most significant result of these previous investigations has been the increased use of jet bits accompanied by better hydraulic programs and better selection of drilling fluids. Undoubtedly, these practices have improved bottom-hole cleaning, but rates of penetration when drilling with muds are still often lower than would be expected with perfect cleaning." Although there is general agreement with the concept that increasing hydraulic energy at a jet bit often increases the rate of penetration by improving cleaning, research workers have differed as to the best criterion for evalyating hydraulics. Some lean toward maximizing the product of the rate of flow and the velocity through the nozzles (QV) others prefer to maximize the hydraulic horsepower at the bit;&apos;"-&apos; "till another says that neither criterion is universally suitable."&apos; This controversy shows that conclusive field evidence has not established the superiority of either of these criteria. Analysis of the fluid flow which cleans the bottom should contribute to resolving the controversy. Impinging jets clean the bottom by creating two mechanisms capable of dislodging cuttings. One is the impact from the momentum of the jet and the other is the flaw parallel to the bottom away from the area of impingement. The impact force appears in the form of a pressure wave on the bottom and, in this paper, is called the impact-pressure wave. The flow parallel to the bottom is called crossflow. Fig. 1 illustrates these two mechanisms. This paper describes crossflow and the impact-pressure wave beneath jet bits and relates them to controllable parameters. Through these relations, criteria for use in designing hydraulics to achieve maximum use of the mechanisms of cleaning are derived. PROPERTIES OF CROSSFLOW CONCEPTS DEVELOPED IN PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Concepts of scavenging the bottom by crossflow have been well discussed by Bobo, et al." They examine the means by which crossflow may create forces on cuttings and conclude that the cleaning action of crossflow can be increased by increasing the velocity of the flow stream close to the bottom.
