CONDITIONS in underground mining are so variable that in approach-ing the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-ures, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifica-tions. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem.

As the coating formed affects the corrosion rate, duplicate samples of eight non-ferrous alloys were placed in flowing mine water. The alloys tested were as-cast or as-rolled and machined or polished. The paper describes the tests and gives the corrosion losses and the appearance of the samples at the end of the test. AN IMPORTANT factor affecting the rate and nature of corrosion of metals and alloys is the film, or coating, formed on the surface; and this may accelerate or retard corrosive action once started. The formation of films and coatings is intimately associated with the chemical composition and physical constitution of both the metal and the corroding medium. A film or coating may be either the corrosion product resulting from oxidation; that is, an oxide or salt, or a deposition of suspended matter from the corroding media upon the surface of the metal, or a mixture of both. The coating may adhere tightly or loosely to the surface of the corroded metal. In short, a film or coating is the reaction product of the corroding medium and the metal, which adheres to the surface of the metal and with which may be intermingled material from the attacking media not concerned in the chemical reactions. As the, terms film and coating are used by different writers for very different things, distinction is made between the two, by the present writers, on the basis of thickness. Thus, a film is defined as a corrosion product or deposition, on the surface of a corroded metal, that is of such thickness that it cannot be measured by the metallurgical microscope. A coating, on the other hand, is of such thickness that it can be measured. If the resolving power of the 2 mm. (equivalent focal length) apochromatic oil immersion objective (N.A. 1.4) is taken as the limit of the microscope, the limiting resolution is two lines that are 0.0002-0.0004 mm. apart. It is thus possible to measure coatings that are greater than 0.0002-0.0004 mm. thick. This thickness is equivalent to 200,000-

THE Hume-Rothery rule relating the relative sizes of the solvent and solute atoms in a substitutional solid solution for moderate to extensive solubility is, of course, well known and much used in the design of alloys. No such rule has been obtained for interstitial solid solutions, although a qualitatively similar relationship would be expected. Among the most common interstitial elements, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen which can dissolve in important amounts in the transition metals, only in the case of oxygen is there enough solubility data available for an examination of the possibilities of a simple relationship between the extent of solubility and the properties of the metal solvents. Three properties were examined: 1—size of the octahedral space V into which oxygen atoms fit, 2— the elastic modulus E, and 3—the free energy ?F of formation of a low oxide, such as is known to be, or would be expected to be, in equilibrium with the terminal solid solution. The size factor or octahedral volume is so closely associated with the well known Hume-Rothery con- cept of size factor that additional development of this subject is hardly necessary. The octahedral volume used was not corrected to an elevated temperature, as this correction would have made no significant difference. The second factor, Young's modulus E, must be considered, since it is a measure of the strain energy required to force neighboring atoms apart so that an oxygen atom may enter the octahedral volume. The temperature dependence of the elastic modulus of many metals has been reported by Köster,1 but for a rather limited temperature range. Since the

FLAME fusion growth of strontium titanate crystals was undertaken to obtain large transparent crystals on which physical data could be gathered. The fact that strontium titanate is a cubic crystal and probably has a high index of refraction indicated that it might be useful in optics. No large boules* of strontium titanate had been synthesized previously, and none have been found as natural occurrences. The flame fusion process, invented by Verneuil in 1904,1 was first applied to grow large crystals of ruby and has since been used extensively to grow crystals of corundum and spinel on a commercial scale. Only during the past nine years has this technique been applied to the growth of large single crystals of other high melting compounds such as rutile,2 mullite,3 and ferrites4 One of several significant advantages of the flame fusion technique over more conventional methods of growing crystals from a melt is that the crystals are grown without the use of melt containers. This fact alone excludes other methods of growing crystals from a melt whenever there are compounds with a melting point near 2000°C or above. Growth of the crystal, similar to that of a stalagmite, takes place inside a circular refractory furnace that does not contact the crystal, Fig. 1. This eliminates a serious source of impurities as well as the likelihood of multi-crystalline solidification along the container walls. The flame fusion technique is particularly advantageous for research because it produces large crystals quickly and at lower cost. A corundum crystal 25 mm long and 12 mm in diam can be grown in 2 to 3 hr. Operating conditions permit observation of the growing crystal during any stage of the process. The various flame patterns and a wide range of oxidation-reduction conditions can be investigated in a relatively short time. It should be pointed out that formation of the foot of the boule is the most critical step in growing an unfractured boule. When the tip of the sintered cone is fused to initiate crystal growth, the original area of fusion should be kept as small as possible so that one crystallite can assume dominance over all the others and propagate as a single crystal. If the boule start happens to consist of several crystals, usually the entire boule also contains several crystals. In many cases these tightly cohering crystals exhibit different crystallographic orientations. Although the basic technique of the original Verneuil process has been retained, refinements in method and burner design have been developed in recent years. For example, boule growth may be initiated on a seed crystal rather than by fusion of a sintered cone. The danger of multicrystalline or twinned boule starts is thus eliminated, and this procedure may also be used to grow boules of predetermined crystallographic orientation. Prior Art: Of the many attempts to produce artificial gem crystals, most early efforts% ere directed toward synthesis of .rubies and sapphires and diamonds. None of these efforts resulted in a process that was commercially practical. Without exception only tiny crystals of corundum were obtained, and those at excessive cost. Verneuil announced his process in 1904; Ravier6 in 1934 presented a detailed description of a commercial boule production plant. Descriptions of the German synthetic stone industry, the process details, and the equipment used have been published by Barnes7 and by Merker.'

Rates of absorption and effusion of hydrogen in solid iron were measurede by a Sieverts type of apparatus. With clean a iron these rates are diffusion controlled down to 420°C and are represented by the equation D = 6.70 x e-'100' crn2 sec-I Certain surface impurities can affect these rates at all temper-atuves. Thin oxide films lower, the apparent diffusivity of annealed iron markedly. Cold-worked iron (75 pct) annealed at 430°C has practically the same solubility and diffusivity as anealed iron. THE mechanism of absorption and evolution of hydrogen in solid iron alloys is not fully understood despite the large number of investigations on the subject. While there appear to be many instances of simple solid-state diffusion control of rate, there are many cases where investigators have either concluded that surface reactions are rate controlling or that some "nondiffusible" hydrogen resides in discontinuities. The purposes of this research were 1) to develop a sound method for studying this absorption and evolution behavior, 2) to examine it in pure annealed iron, and 3) to determine the effects of important variables, such as cold work, surface condition, and composition. This paper relates the progress toward these objectives. Much of the present knowledge of the movement of hydrogen through iron alloys comes from permeability studies which involve the measurement of the rate of passage (under steady state conditions) through membranes of the order of 1 mm in thickness. This method is open to question on various grounds. If surface reactions are involved, two different surfaces operating under two different conditions must be considered. The presence of defects in the membrane even of microscopic dimensions may lead to erroneous results. A few people have studied evolution of hydrogen into vacuum, under carefully controlled (unsteady state) conditions, and some of the best diffusivity data come from these sources. Most of these methods measure rates of evolution only and thus do not make a rigorous test for reversibility of behavior. It appeared that an "unsteady state" method that would permit the measurement of both rates of evolution and absorption under controlled temperature, pressure, and other conditions would offer several advantages. Accordingly the modified Sieverts apparatus described below was designed and built. APPARATUS This apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The sample bulb is detailed in Fig. 2. Hydrogen of 99.5 pct purity and argon of 99.99 pct purity were used. The hydrogen was deoxidized and dried by means of a Deoxo unit followed by a "Dri-erite" tower. The argon was only dried. The gas burette was graduated in tenths of a cubic centimeter, and, with the aid of a travelling magnifier, readings could be estimated to the nearest 0.01 cc. The level of mercury in the burette was adjusted by means of a leveling bulb operated by a fine screw adjustment. An electrical system, consisting of two slightly separated platinum electrodes inserted in one leg of the manometer and a small light bulb was used to obtain rapid accurate adjustment of the pressure. The capillary tubing of the Vycor sample bulb was 3 mm bore as was all tubing back to the gas burette. The samples were discs made from vacuum-melted Ferrovac-E iron of greater than

AN understanding of mineralizing solutions and how they carry and deposit metals is of prime importance to students of ore deposits. Lindgren states: "The whole problem surely is very complicated. One difficulty is that we know so little about the stability field of ore minerals."1 Lindgren further states: It is believed that they [the solutions] were in small part oxidized to sulphates, for instance, but in large part they were composed of hydrogen sulphide, alkaline sulphides and various halogen compounds. Doubtless, however, free carbon dioxide was present. Becker's view of the double sulphides as important constituents of the solutions probably holds good. In the fourth edition of Mineral Deposits2 Lindgren had changed his views somewhat: From the work of Day, Allen, Shepard, and others, it would seem probable that many of the volcanic gases are acid when given off but are in unstable equilibrium, and could not have preserved this acid character after having been long in contact with the surrounding rocks. It is believed that they were in small part oxidized to sulphates, for instance, but in larger part they were composed of hydrogen sulphides, alkaline sulphide, and various halogen compounds. Doubtless, however, free carbon dioxide was present. Becker's view of double alkaline sulphides as important constituents of the solution probably holds good. The writer wonders if progress would not result from an attack on the problem in steps, the steps to contribute to the attack on the whole. The initial step would deal with the simpler bodies of supposed magmatic (hydrothermal) origin, that is, those composed essentially of silicates, oxides, sulfates, and sulfides. The following discussion attempts to develop one step of a method that was proposed on a more comprehensive scale in 1929 by the writer and W. S. Burbank.3 The accompanying partial table (Table I) of the electromotive series is from a table distributed by Merck & Co. Inc., manufacturing chemists, prepared in turn from Fundamental Chemistry.& The electromotive arrangement brings together elements that in hypogene ore deposits occur: 1) in oxygen combination only; 2) in combination with sulfur as well as with oxygen; and 3) as sulfides, arsenides etc., and as native metals, see Table 11. The writer clearly recognizes that he is not qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, but he feel that some of the relations that are met by the geologist can well be stated with the hope that the chemical explanation will be forthcoming. By consideration of a group including mainly the elements oxygen, hydrogen, sulfur and iron, complications are avoided, especially with elements of the lower electromotive group. The results can only contribute to the solution of the problem, not to the completion of it. The pH and Eh of the solutions and also temperature probably determine what minerals form. The mineral groups that contain elements high in the electromotive series are alumino-silicates, titanites, simple silicates, spinels, oxides, carbonates and sulfates, in all of which the elements are combined with oxygen. These groups are also recognized as the general order of temperature at which the minerals start to form, see Table 11. At low temperature are sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, sulfo-salts, and native metals, in all of which the elements are characteristically not combined with oxygen. The intermediate temperature group contains elements that form both oxygen compounds and sulfur compounds.

I. INTRODUCTION THE word recovery as used in this paper is applied in its broader sense and not limited to wells producing from horizons of unconsolidated sands. Certain problems connected with the winning of petroleum from such horizons present themselves while drilling is in progress and should be considered before drilling is commenced wherever unconsolidated sands are expected. Maximum recovery depends not alone upon efficient pumping methods but also upon the selection of a proper drilling system and the completion of a well especially adapted to the extraction of these oil-bearing sands. II. DRILLING DETERMINING FACTORS IN SELECTION OF METHOD The selection of a drilling method for the development of a region in which the oil reservoir consists of unconsolidated sands is based on the following considerations: (1) Character of the formations overlying the reservoir; (2) thickness of the oil-bearing stratum or strata; (3) thickness and character of water or gas sands; (4) gas pressure to be encountered or expected; (5) total depth of well.

GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES DIVISION OF ENGINEERING Government supervision of employment for technical men has been inaugurated by the United States Employment Service, through the establishment of a Division of Engineering, with A. H. Krom, of Chicago, formerly Secretary of the American Association of Engineers, as Director. War demands on the engineering profession have already caused a serious shortage of men with mechanical designing experience and those with practical experience in chemical engineering. At present the professional organizing mediums reach less than 20 per cent. of the estimated 300,000 technical men in the country. This is not a satisfactory arrangement for war times. All the technical men of the country must be reached and, in addition, all men with technical experience must be carefully registered so that they will be immediately available. The advantages of such a governmental registering and systematizing of employment will be apparent at once, to the engineer. Considering that this is principally an engineer's war, the importance of Federal direction of distribution and conservation of the technical service of the country is apparent. The Service will he started through the office of the Director of Engineering, 29 S. LaSalle St., Chicago. All technical men desiring to register for emergency Government work or permanent advancement in positions meeting their qualifications, are urged to volunteer at once for registration, classification and employment.

The dealings between concentrated capital invested in the conduct of our various industries and the combinations of labor known as "trade union organizations," have produced not only in the United States, but abroad, many novel methods of negotiation between employers and wage-workers. The size and strength of these organizations have destroyed the personal elements formerly governing the dealings between employer and employee, and have produced various forms of trade-agreements now in more or less successful operation. The difficulty, however, has been to secure consent of both parties to an equitable agreement. For this purpose there have been devised various forms of arbitration, either compulsory under the shadow of governmental legislation, or voluntary by mutual agreement. But these have not been altogether successful from a technical stand-point, for the reason that a compromise has generally been necessary, and in an effort to reach an agreement, terms have been made which have been neither fair nor satisfactory to either of the contending parties. The Anthracite Board of Conciliation represents one of the few thoroughly successful courts for the settlement of trade-disputes, if not the only one which has yet been evolved. The prestige of this board rests upon its successful treatment of the labor-troubles of the anthracite region for a period of more than eight years, and upon the fact that it has been able

The purpose of the continuous casting processes is twofold: As the name implies, they aim at performing a heretofore intermittent operation continuously; in this respect, they tend to satisfy the appetite of the beast that modern extrusion plants and rolling mills have grown to be. The effort invested in the development of these methods bore rich dividends in economy and in the improvement of technical characteristics. The other purpose of many continuous casting methods is to reduce the number o-f operations mushrooming between the liquid alloy and the finished mill product, essentially by substituting adequate chill in comparatively small cross sections for one or more "breakdown" steps. It is this second tendency of continuous casting that justifies description of the Soro process within the frame of our symposium: although not continuous, the Soro method constitutes a means of converting molten metal into a nearly finished mill product. The Process The name, Soro, is a composition of initials and abbreviations, with no particular technical significance. The process originates in Switzerland; it was adopted by numerous European plants between 1937 and 1940 and is now being installed in this country. It is applicable to ferrous and nonferrous alloys of an exceptionally wide range of composition. It is capable of producing rod from 1/2 in. to approxi- mately 4 in. in diameter, or other simple solid shapes of corresponding cross-sectional area. , Fig. I shows schematically the succession of operations involved. A ring is cast in a two-part centrifugal-casting metal mold. The cross section of the ring may be round, hexagonal, rectangular or some other solid shape, with the exception of any contour that is undercut with reference to the mold parting line. As cast, the ring has a riser along its inner periphery, which is removed in the next operation, so as to leave the ring with a dean cross section. Following the removal of the riser, the ring is severed at one point and one end is bent outward, leaving a slight clearance between the two ends. The next step is straightening of the ring in a special device, forming a bar with a slight bend; this is followed by any one of the conventional finishing operations that are necessary to obtain forging rod, screw-machine stock or strip. The outstanding features of this procedure are: I. The cross section cast is the same or within a few per cent of the cross section of the finished product (except for fabricating into strip and wire). 2. All operations following casting of the ring are performed cold. Equipment The equipment required is simple and inexpensive. The casting machine is a conventional horizontal-shaft mold assembly, similar to those found in centrifugal-casting foundries. MINING operations of the Charcas unit at present are limited to the Tiro General mine at Charcas, in the State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Tiro General mine was first operated during the Spanish occupation of Mexico for rich silver ores in an oxidized zone along the outcrop of the principal vein. In depth the ore is a complex sulfide with widely varying proportions of sphalerite, argentiferous galena and chalcopyrite; and until recent years, it was economically impossible to carry on mining otherwise than irregularly in sections of the veins richest in galena and chalcopyrite. The advent of selective flotation brought the orebody as a whole within the field of economic interest, and a flotation mill of 650 metric tons daily capacity was constructed in the year 1925. The mining of partly worked-out sections of the mine, as well as the very heavy ground in most of the stopes opened in virgin ore, presented an unusually difficult problem. This -paper describes the so-called "filled top slice" stoping method finally adopted as the standard system.

A first requirement for assessing the safety of a rock slope, either artificial or natural, particularly if the rock behaves in an elastic-brittle manner, is a propw knowledge of the distribution of stresses within the slope and their development with time and advancement of workings. There are a uumber of different methods that can be used, in principle, for obtaining this information, such as (1) stress measurement in situ, (2) photoelasticity,1 (3) analytical methods, and (4) numerical methods. In cases where the stress distribution cannot be obtained by classical analytical methods, as in the one considered herein, either photoelasticity or numerical methods are norrnally used. However, actually, due to the rapid development of high-speed computers, increasing preference is given to the numerical methods. Among the latter, the most successful ones, to date, for determining the stress distribution in slopes have been (1) the finite difference method,2-4 (2) the lumped parameter method,5 and (3) the finite element rnethod.6 However, for determining gravity stresses in a natural rock slope, only the finite difference method has been used until now.7,8 A solution of the same problem by the finite element method will be shown here in which a particular reference is given to the development of tensile fracture zones within the slope. INVESTIGATIONS into the possibilities of economically mining and concentrating low-grade iron ores of the Lake Superior region are attract-ing increasing attention. Among the organizations that are carrying on the work are the United States Bureau of Mines, the State of Minne-sota (which spends about $80,000 annually on problems of the 'iron and ferroalloy ores of Minnesota), and the State of Michigan (which spends about $10,000 annually of its iron-ore research). Several of the mining companies are also financing research. Of the states in the Lake Superior district, Minnesota has done most in iron-ore concentration. In 1930, thirty-seven concentrating plants were in operation on the Mesabi Range, beneficiating about one-third of the total ore shipped. About one-half of these plants reduced silica; the others reduced moisture or improved the structure of the ore.1 Research into the possibilities of magnetic concentration of the Eastern Mesabi magnetite ores indicates that vast tonnages of that ore may be utilized at a profit in the not distant future. Magnetic concentration has also been tried at Sellwood, Ontario, on the Moose Mountain deposit, and at the Berkshire mine in Wisconsin on the magnetic ores of the Western Gogebic Range. There have been few attempts to concentrate Michigan iron ores. In order to determine the possibilities of such concentration, iron-ore research has been carried on at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology for the past few years. After a general survey of the iron ores of the state, a program of more detailed experimentation was out-lined, starting with work on the Ironwood formation of the Gogebic Range. The results of this research led to the belief that gravity methods will produce fairly satisfactory concentrates from the parts of the iron formation that are made up of comparatively thick alternating beds of rather high-grade ore and lean chert.

The microstructure of three Al-Al2O3 SAP-Type alloys (containing 2.0, 3.0, and 5.7 wt pct alumina, respectively) was studied utilizing transmission electron microscopy. These alloys were fabricated from aluminum powders by powder-metallurgical techniques, cold-rolled into thin strips, and recrys -tallized. Thin foils suitable for an electron-transmission study were then prepared from the strip material by electropolishing. The microstructure of these alloys is shown to consist of small (0.1 mean diameter) plate -shaped alumina particles finely distributed in an aluminum matrix. In the higher-oxide content alloys the platelets are somewhat larger and more irregular in shape. The distribution of oxide particles is not uniform and there is an increasing tendency toward clumping SINCE the discovery by Irmann1 that aluminum alloys produced by compacting, hot pressing, and extruding fine aluminum powders possess remarkable high-temperature mechanical properties, the Al-A12O3 SAP-Type alloys have been utilized extensively as model dispersion-strengthened alloys in both experimental and theoretical invest igations.2-8 The use of the SAP-Type alloys as model dispersion-strengthened alloys implicitly assumes that their microstructure has been completely delineated. This is, however, not the case. with increasing oxide content. In all the alloys studied, the mean center-to-center spacing of particles was quite small (0.2 u) due to the very fine oxide debris present. Selected-area diffraction of the specimen identified the oxide as either y Al2O3 or y' Al2o3. The re crystallized MD-5100 alloy exhibited a mean grain diameter of only 0.7u, while the grain size of the other alloys was several hundred microns. Severe pinning of the grain boundaries by oxide particles was rarely observed, and the grain boundary triple points in the small-grained MD-5100 alloy were often particle -free. Diffraction contrasts visible around the particles are attributed to elastic strain fields set up by differential thermal contraction during cooling from the recrystallization anneal. Early investigation demonstrated that optical metallography did not possess sufficient resolution to observe the microstructure of the SAP-Type alloys.' Later, extensive use was made of replication techniques to study the microstructure by means of electron microscopy.7-9 These studies indicated that the SAP-Type alloys consist of a dispertion of irregular Al2O3 platelets, approximately 150A thick 9 and a micron or so on edge,9 distributed in a matrix of commercial-purity aluminum. These oxide platelets tend to be oriented in the aluminum matrix, with their largest dimension parallel to the extrusion direction. 8,9 A study employing polarized-light techniques1' indicated that the grain size of a series of as-extruded SAP-Type alloys was several microns in diameter, while the grain size after re-crystallization was several millimeters in diameter. AN explosive of, balanced composition might be expected, on first consideration, to develop maximum propulsive strength.1 This hypothesis is based on the assumption that an excess of oxygen would act simply as an inert material with a consequent lowering of flame temperature, also that a deficiency of oxygen would tend toward incomplete reaction of the combustible materials, thereby preventing development of the full strength of the explosion. Actually, however, it can be shown both theoretically and experimentally that an explosive having a certain oxygen deficiency will develop the greatest propulsive strength. This fact has been known to the technical staffs of explosives manufacturers for many years, but it has not always been recognized by explosives engineers in the field. For example: There: is a fairly widespread opinion that the wrapper of a stick of dynamite is merely a container for the explosive and that it plays little if any part in the development of propulsive strength. Actually, it can be shown that the wrapper enters fairly completely into, the explosive reaction. In the case of most gelatin dynamites, a given weight of explosive from which the wrappers have been removed will develop considerably less strength than the same weight of explosive plus wrapper, in spite of the fact that the latter combination contains less weight of the actual explosive ingredient. The mechanical properties of many nonferrous alloys can be modified by heat-treatment. This is almost always effected by controlling the amount of alloy in solid solution and the amount and distribution of second-phase material. The latter often is accomplished through precipitation or age-hardening treatments. The procedure is to solution-heat-treat the metal to provide a supersaturated solid solution and then cause precipitation of the dissolved material at some temperature below the solvus for the alloy. The generally used magnesium sand-casting alloys arc based on the ternary alloy system Mg-Al-Zn. Solid diffusion reactions in the system are slow enough so that a substantially completely supersaturated solulion is maintained even though the metal is relatively slowly cooled from heat-treating temperatures. Consequently, it is general practice to air-cool magnesium-alloy castings from the heat-treatment temperature prior to aging at an elevated temperature. Since it is necessary with many other alloys to cool quite rapidly before aging if optimum benefit from the aging is to be obtained, this study was undertaken to determine the effects of quenching on magnesium alloys. The] alloys used are shown in Table I, being selected as typical of the presently used magnesium alloys. Cooling Rates Since quenching is a means of rapidly extracting heat, there are two factors of interest in its study: (I) the rates of cooling that can be obtained and (2) the effect of various rates on the as-cooled as well as subsequently aged metal. The cooling rates were measured by drilling a hole 1/16- in diameter longitudi~lally in the center of a cylinder % in. in diameter and 3 in. long. The drilling was stopped to place the end of the hole at the center of the long axis of the cylinder. An iron-constantan thermocouple was inserted in this hole and wedged in place. The temperature drop during rapid quenching was recorded by a special1y built General Electric potentiometer recorder capab1e of measuring ' 500°F. temperature drop in 1/10 sec. For the slower cooling rates in air or oil, the temperature drop was measured by a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer recorder with the chart speed increased to One inch per minute' The cylinder was heated to the desired temperature, quenched as desired, and the temperature-time curve recorded. The cooling rates in still air, in oil at 350°F., in water at 180°F. and in a cold, high-pressure water spray were determined in this manner. The results of this study are presented in Fig. I. Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.'-' In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:' /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d'Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. There are two general types of oil flotation processes, froth and bulk-oil. In froth flotation, the coal concentrates are removed in the form of a froth or foam composed of air, liquid, and solids. Mechanical or pneumatic agitation of a coal slurry with suitable frothing agent causes a selective action of the bubbles to the coal particles which are carried to the upper portion of the pulp in the flotation cell; the refuse is wetted by the water and does not rise with the froth, but goes out as tailings. The other type of flotation process, bulk-oil, consists of thoroughly mixing the slurry or pulp with 30 to 50 pct of its weight of oil. The coal agglomerates with the oil and drops to the bottom of the cell while the refuse is wetted by the water and is carried away in suspension. The concentrate granules may be screened and drained to 12 to 15 pct moisture. The minus 200 or 300-mesh is very effectively treated by this process. The Trent process is a bulk-oil type which has been used for coal cleaning on a commercial basis, but its use has been discontinued in this country. Froth flotation of bituminous coal should be subdivided into two distinct fields: (I) separation of a dry coal product such as recovered from an aspiration system; (2) separation of a minus 48-mesh slurry such as produced from a thickener in a wet cleaning plant. The capacities, performance, and general operating characteristics are very different in these two fields. The recirculated slurry in a washery becomes oxidized and is much harder to treat than a dry dust. It is difficult to clean a slurry containing an appreciable percentage of plus 48-mesh without also floating some high-ash clays minus 200-niesh in size. On the other hand, while working with an aspirated dust, good results have been obtained in floating coal as coarse as 3/16-in. Because of the relatively low capacity of flotation machines as compared with conventional fine-coal cleaners .and because of the greater quantity of reagents required to float coarse coal, there is usually no point in considering flotation on bituminous coal for anything coarser than approximately 48-mesh. In some coal-cleaning plants, good separations are being made down to 80 or even 100-mesh by a less expensive system of coal cleaning than flotation. The Pittsburgh Coal Co. carried out extensive tests on laboratory batch machines and on small units of both pneumatic and mechanical agitation types from 1930 to 1935 and have operated six, eight, and then twelve mill-size mechanical subaeration cells from 1932 to 1944 This paper will deal with some of the operating phases and results of coal-flotation practices as derived from this experience, and more specifically with the flotation practice at the Champion No. I preparation plant. The experience gained from the research and initial experimental work contributed greatly to the successful operation of the mill-sized flotation units at Champion.

THIS paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole, By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simple and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given.

AMONG the genetically interesting iron ores of the United States are those of the St. Francis Mountains near Ironton and Iron Mountain, Missouri. They are specular hematite in porphyry. The Iron Mountain and Shepherd Mountain deposits are generally spoken of as veins and those of Pilot Knob, Cedar Hill, and Russell Mountain as bedded deposits. Iron Mountain has produced nearly 4,000,000 tons of ore and Pilot Knob about 1,500,000 tons. The output of the other three localities has been insignificant. Pilot Knob is no longer worked as an iron mine, but the rock is now being crushed for use as road metal. Iron Mountain has continued as an active producer. In 1927, the property was acquired by the M. A. Hanna Co. and an extensive prospecting and exploration campaign was undertaken, so that the ultimate production of Iron Mountain will doubtless greatly exceed the figures mentioned.
