It is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling muds to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2-3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable extent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the ['tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata. Quantitative relations of filter-cake permeability, filtrate viscosity, and rate of filtration have been developed for filtration in the simple laboratory filter.4a,11,12,13 It is obvious, however, that the conditions

THE hardenability concept has become widely used during the last few years for the choice and substitution of steels. Before the work of Grossmann,1 the systems for predicting hardenability from chemical composition could be used only over a narrow range of composition. Grossmann introduced a comprehensive system, which has been effective in calculating the hardenability of most types of moderate or low-alloy steels. However, occasions .often arise that require the calculation of the hardenability of high-alloy steels from their chemical compositions. Experimental determinations of the hardenabilities of such steels indicate that the Grossmann system predicts much greater hardenabilities than are realized. The fact that cases do arise in which the Grossmann method does not, apply indicates that the fundamental hypothesis of the system may not be generally applicable. It seems advisable to re-examine not only Grossmann's system but also the concept of hardenability itself. HARDENABILITY If steel parts are to possess a martensitic structure after quenching, they must first be austenitized and then cooled through the pearlite and bainite transformation ranges sufficiently rapidly to avoid the formation of pearlite, bainite, and proeutectoid products.* If, on cooling, these transformations are avoided, the resulting structure can consist only of martensite (and retained austenite). The hardenability of a steel is measured in terms of the severity of the cooling conditions necessary to avoid the pearlite and bainite transformations. The less rapid is the cooling necessary to prevent the formation of bainite and pearlite, the higher is the hardenability. The pearlite and bainite reactions appear to be differently affected by the alloying elements. Not only is this indicated by the published isothermal transformation data, but recent work by Zener2 affords a rational interpretation of the differing effects of the alloying elements. Manganese,3 for example, appears to decrease the rates of the pearlite and bainite transformations by equal percentages, while molybdenum4,5 is approximately 10,000 times more effective in retarding the pearlite than in retarding the bainite transformation, on the basis of isothermal measurements. DURING the seventeen years Fairchild has been making aerial surveys and aerial photographic equipment many changes and improvements have been made in the equipment and in the technique of using it. Aerial photographic operations have, been developed from the crude methods and apparatus of wartime to a science upon which exact engineer-ing calculations can be based. In the early days there was no airplane specially designed to meet aerial photographic requirements. One type of camera was used in all types of operations. Projects were made to conform to the products we could make and deliver. Obviously this entailed definite limitations. We now have airplanes designed specially for aerial photographic operations in accordance with the conditions encountered in actual service experience. We have cameras for every photographic purpose and our laboratory technique and equipment have been developed to the point where it is possible to make contour maps from vertical aerial photographs with contour intervals as close as five feet. Therefore, the selection of equipment now can be made in accordance with the time at our disposal, the justifiable cost, the scale desired, and the general requirements of the client. This does not mean, however, that arbitrary deliveries can be set for aerial photographic products. The factors in each project vary and each job must be considered in accordance with the factors involved. This accounts for the fact that products of aerial surveys may readily vary from $1.25 to $200 a square mile. Sherman M. Fairchild became interested in the design of a radically different aerial camera during the war. At its close he was about ready to demonstrate his design to the War Department. By 1920, he was able to bring out his first completed model. It had a number of radical features, one of which was the first dependable high-speed between-the-lens shutter, which makes for accuracy in aerial photographic work. Another feature was the use of metal throughout, eliminating the wooden parts that had been employed in wartime cameras. Another feature was the interchangeability of parts.

Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen: I accepted your Chairman's invitation to speak to a group of experts in this field with the greatest hesitation, because I know little or nothing about it. Certainly I can make no detailed suggestions, or suggest planning along very definite lines. You cannot do that sort of thing in a vacuum, and as I have suggested, my knowledge of the whole oil problem is next to nothing. It is possible that as a student of our public law, constitutional law particularly, for a number of years, I have acquired a perspective that may enable me to offer, for what they are worth, some general thoughts on these problems. I think that nothing in the whole field of law requires more definitely and clearly the functional approach than does the problem of a sound legal solution of the difficulties of the oil and gas industry. The industry is dealing with substances that are peculiar, and one must know how those substances act and what has been the history of the industry, to undertake to make anything like specific suggestions. I certainly am not qualified.

[In an increasing degree in recent years, especially since the war, men in many parts of the world are turning their attention to the problems of the future, attempting to appraise the basis and extent of man's progress and interpret the problem that he faces in the near future. The war made clear to ma persons the degree to which modern industry depends upon t continuous flow of enormous quantities of raw materials, a especially of the minerals. In many circles throughout t world, the question of adequate supplies of the mine especially the fuels and metals, for near as well as more remo needs is receiving serious consideration. As a result, persons representing the state as well as industry are looking to geologists and engineers for all the data that throw light on the distribution, extent and availability of the minerals that must serve coming generations.] Obviously, in a brief research I have been able to consider only a few sources of the metals in Europe, perhaps fifty out of a total of many hundreds. In order that the conclusions may have value, however, I have chosen districts which have been important sources during some epoch of the last three hundred years or more.

THE classical papers on contact metasomatic deposits by Lindgren on the Clifton-Morenci district,1 by Barrel1 on Marysville, Mont.,2 and by Goldschmitt on the Oslo district, Norway,3 laid the foundation for understanding of the importance of separating the metamorphic process from the subsequent metasomatic stage. Knopf4 made a big step forward by recognizing that sulfide ore minerals are invariably younger than silicates and by further stressing the importance of structural control5 ore finding. Some years later Harrison Schmitt6 fought the idea that contact metasomatic deposits are erratic, irregular, bunchy, economically marginal, and of small size, concluding that these descriptions have little factual basis. He emphasized the importance of detail mapping and careful geological study as fundamental requirements for a better understanding of these deposits. This article presents a comparative description of the structural features at the Magistral, Antamina, Morococha, Vilca, Ferrobamba, Katanga (Quibio), Tintaya, and Huarca contact deposits (Fig. 1). Further, it will describe how these structural features controlled the emplacement of the intrusives, their shape, distribution of metamorphic and metasomatic halos, and sulfide deposition in post-skarn structural channelways. Finally, the modifications introduced by a superimposed hydrothermal stage recognized at some localities will be discussed.

A USEFUL accelerated weathering test should be capable of placing any series of metals quantitatively in the same order of endurance as that noted under a particular set of actual exposure conditions. The development of such a test must necessarily depend to a considerable extent upon data obtained from a wide variety of exposures. This paper offers preliminary data from exposure tests on nine metals placed in 11 locations in the Lehigh Valley, within a radius of 20 miles from Palmerton. The exposure conditions vary from a severe industrial atmosphere to a pure rural atmosphere. The data are offered as evidence of the necessity for the identification and evaluation of the variables of corrosion and as illustration of some of the variations to be considered in the development of a useful accelerated test. It is quite clear, from this evidence, that a useful accelerated test must be versatile to the extent of showing the probable variations of corrosion resulting from differences in atmosphere as well as from differences in the metals. The paper is presented solely with the object of pointing out the wide variations in relative merits of several common metals in resisting corrosion and without any thought of initiating controversy regarding the, merits of particular metals. For this reason the metals are designated only by symbols in the tables and no key is given to these symbols.

Progress in the development of an automatic control system for the chalcopyrite flotation circuit at Mount Isa Mines Limited is discussed. Preliminary studies have shown that the operating grade/ recovery curve for a sulphide flotation circuit is established by rougher-scavenger behaviour and the operating point on that curve by cleaner-retreatment behaviour. The control strategy of the rougher-scavenger banks involved regulation of xanthate to maintain recovery and control of air to seek the optimum grade/recovery curve. Control of the cleaner circuit to maintain the correct operating point of the plant relative to the ore entering it will be by air. Pulp levels will be used as an additional controllable variable in due course. Sensing instruments include a “Courier” on-stream analyser and several mass flow metering systems each of which contains a magnetic flow meter and a gama gauge. Measurements of concentrate grades and recoveries are made as early as possible in the rougher bank so that a change in the ore entering the plant can be detected as soon as possible. Over a period of six months from initial control systems application, computer control of xanthate resulted in an overall reduction in consumption of 10%. Experimental work has indicated that improved metallurgical performance will result from the introduction of additional air and level control loops.

Although the term "spalling" has long been known, Norton l first referred to its usage for the fracture or disintegration of materials subjected to rapid temperature changes. Spalling of ceramic materials at high temperatures has received attention in the past.2-4 Removal of the char formed during ablation in reentry of space vehicles has been referred to as mechanical spalling.5 The first experiments to evaluate the process of rock fragmentation by thermal spalling were conducted by Stoces6 using a series of gasoline burners on the quartz veins of the Zinnwald deep mines in Germany. After the development of rocket-jet burners, the principles of thermal spalling combined with high fluid momentum found wide practical application in rocks. The well-known jet piercing process for drilling blastholes in taconite and for jet channeling in the quarrying of granite are among the more notable of these application.7 For the purposes of this study, thermal spalling or spallation of rocks is defined as progressive failure caused by thermal stresses induced by a sudden application of heat from a high temperature heat source. Gray observes that the size of the spall is dependent on the pattern of induced thermal stresses before failure. The spallability or the relative susceptibility of rocks to failure by thermal spalling is a complex but potentially useful parameter for qualitative comparisons. Fundamental differences exist in the degree of spallability among different types of rocks. Accurate prediction of spallability of any particular rock has so far not been possible. Measurement of the state of stress and temperature in the rock during the rapid thermal spalling process poses difficult problems that must be solved. HIWASSEE Dam, now under construction by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Hiwassee River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, will require aggregate for approximately 800,000 cu. yd. of concrete. Near the damsite deposits of natural sand or gravel are not available and graywacke, a rock that is found in abundance, suggested itself as a likely source of manufactured aggregate. Graywacke is a metamorphosed sandstone composed principally of a mixture of quartz (65 per cent), mica (25 per cent), and feldspar (10 per cent). Other minerals are pres-ent in negligible amounts. The rock varies in different parts of the quarry from very fine to a coarse grain containing particles of about 1/4 in. maximum size, although the bulk of the deposit is medium grain. Exten-sive tests showed that graywacke would be suitable as a source of both coarse and fine aggregates. The aggregate plant available for use at Hiwassee Dam consisted of the coarse-aggregate and sand plant used on the Norris project. The coarse-aggregate plant had also been used at Chickamauga Dam. Although most of this plant equipment is now in use at Hiwassee, the present flowsheet is not only different from that at Norris and Chicka-mauga but is also unique as compared to the flowsheet of the average crushed-stone aggregate plant. It is hoped that this paper will show the importance of proper arrange-ment of equipment if the optimum in flexibility and capacity is to be attained.

SOMEONE has divided mankind into two groups: (1) those who have the willingness and imagination to weigh the future gain over against a present indulgence, and (2) those who cannot do so. The former have self-control, patience, foresight and a capacity for sustained effort. Those having these homely virtues become the, possessors of capital and hence employers of others. Those lacking these qualities and owning no capital must seek it from those of the first class, and therefore are employed by others. The human qualities, which divide men into two classes-employers and employed-are, however, capable of change by education, training, environment and by all agencies which tend to develop character. These words of the economist have stuck in my mind for many years and the more I see of men in my business contacts the more firmly I am convinced of their truth. The earth in some respects resembles its inhabitants. When we stroll over the fields and hills we are impressed by the unorganized masses of sand and rock which make up the ground beneath our feet. When by chance we come upon a bit of mineral matter in crystalline form we are impressed by its beauty and symmetry and probably have it polished and call it a gem. Gems constitute a minute portion of the earth's crust, and those intellectual gems, worthy of polish, who brilliantly reflect the incident rays of education and experience that have fallen upon them are few among the masses of mankind.

The Petroleum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has for the past three and a half years maintained a laboratory with the necessary personnel for conducting research on methods of increasing the recovery of oil. Some of the preliminary problems encountered in starting this work, with the data obtained, were discussed in A. I. M. E. Technical Publication No. 144, "Oil Recovery Investigations of the Petroleum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines," which was presented at the October meeting of the Institute at Tulsa, Okla., in 1928. Scope of Paper The following discussion gives some of the results of the more recent work at the Oil Recovery Laboratory. These experiments were conducted to obtain laboratory data pertaining to the relative merits or efficiencies of various pressure media in the recovery of oil from a sand reservoir. Two general types of experiments were conducted. In one the various pressure media were passed through an artificial body of sand partly saturated with oil at a constant input pressure; in the other the pressure media were passed through the body of sand partly saturated with oil at a constant volume rate. No attempt will be made to discuss the ramifications of economic problems which enter into the choice of a pressure medium. Apparatus and Materials The two 6-in. by 6-ft. flow tubes described in Technical Publication 144 were used in these experiments. It has long been recognized that it would be highly desirable to be able to predict the temperatures at various points in a burning fuel bed and their variations with changes of the properties of the fuel and the rate of air supply. Experimenta1 investigations of fuel-bed temperature1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical background has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general may. A mathematical analysis", based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of lieat in a fuel bed, lias recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not known, the calculations result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calcu1ated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of the coefficients. For a more. extended discussion of the theory, see the A.S.M.E. paper5. Theory and Comparison with Experiment The theoretical analysis is similar to that used in the calculation of the stationary temperatures in a conducting solid in the classical theory of heat concluction. The fuel bed is pictured as a uniform, continuous, porous solid through the interstices of which air can be blown and ill which combustion can take place. THE technological study of the treatment of gold and silver ores has been largely responsible for the phenomenal strides which have marked the progress in this branch of metallurgy during recent years. In no other application of science to industry is system more imperative at every stage; correct formulation of result is only second in importance to efficiency of operation. Progresss in method has been largely the result of individual initiative, aided by the work of technical journals and metallurgical societies. There still remains a field for profitable discussion, and it is my intention to deal with some inconsistencies of expression common to a number of writers on the subject; and also to draw attention to the false impressions created by a statement which may, possibly, be only unintentionally misleading. I also take the opportunity of tracing the source of both metallurgical and economic result; and to question the desirability of the methods usually employed in arriving at a final statement. In the first place, I wish to deal with the question of extraction. This term may mean anything or nothing, and it is often used to mislead. In a report of a mining engineer as to the result of operations subsequent to the remodeling of a treatment plant prominence was given to the statement that the extraction had amounted to 91 per cent. On examination it was found that only a small percentage of the so-called extraction was calculated on actual bullion return, a proportion being figured from the gold left in the zinc boxes, and not recovered. In addition to this, a proportion of the extraction was said to be due to gold in concentrate. As there was no concentrating apparatus on the property and as concentration did not form a part of the scheme of treatment the matter was investigated, with the result that the concentrate, of lower gold content that the original ore, was found to be the result of an inefficient pumping system which failed to provide for the whole of the battery product delivered to it. The balance was stacked and, although itself of no marketable value, the gold content was allowed to form a basis of extraction figures.

Some physical as well as chemical aspects of the methods of dispersion of various corn starches and their derivatives are investigated and their effects as depressants in anionic silica flotation of iron ores ascertained. The adsorption behavior of starches on hematite and quartz is strongly affected by their molecular sizes as inferred from viscosity measurements. The implication of this behavior on flotation and flocculation is discussed. Mechanical treatment of causticized starch solutions is shown to reduce the starch requirements in flotation appreciably. Starches and starch products have been used as depressants for iron oxides both in amine flotation of siliceous gangue and in soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores. Cooke and his associates1,2,3,4 extensively studied the effects of certain starches and their derivatives in the amine flotation of iron ores at near-neutral pH and found that although most starches were good flocculants for hematite and de- pressed that mineral more or less selectively1,3 they did not flocculate quartz suspensions. Further, that replacement of active groups in corn starch modified its behavior as a flocculant for hematite or quartz suspensions1 and as an iron oxide depressant. Schulz and cooke2 showed that many starches and their derivatives, except aminoethyl starch, were abstracted more effectively by Brazilian hematite than by quartz and that the adsorption of a starch product was strongly dependent on pH and on the presence of calcium ion. In soap flotation of calcium-activated quartz, certain starches and their products have been used to depress iron oxides.5'6 The behavior of these substances in flotation appears at times to be at variance with those previously reported and especially with results obtained in the Mines Experiment Station laboratories. This is attributed, at least in part, to differences in flotation procedure and flowsheets and in the method of preparing the depressant. Most of the investigators referred to above, solubilized the starch products by autoclaving at 120°C. Others have used acid,7 alkali8 or oxidizing agents.9 In view of the limited knowledge of the depressing action of starches and their derivatives in iron ore flotation, particularly in soap flotation of calcium-activated silica at high alkalinity, an extensive study

THE origin of gold both in placer deposits and in veins, and especially the origin of nuggets, has been the subject of repeated discussions and investigations, which have been recently brought to my attention by several extremely interesting specimens sent to me for examination, and more especially by the one exhibited at the meeting of the Institute in February, 1880.* In the year 1874 I made some examinations of the hydraulic mines of Califor¬nia, and was very much struck with the distribution of the gold throughout these deep placers, which were almost invariably poor on' the surface, while gradually growing richer towards" the bed¬rock. The constant presence of fossil wood, and the large quantity of organic matter contained even low down in these beds, was also remarkable. Not being satisfied with the various theories advanced to account for the formation of these deposits, I began an investiga¬tion early in the year 1879 on the conditions of solubility of gold and the causes of the loss in working gold ore in a large way: The researches which I have undertaken show that gold must be considered a soluble rather than an insoluble metal, and that the conditions of solution are such as will be found anywhere where gold is likely to occur, and the solution may take place even under the ordinary cir¬cumstances of surface drainage, and may be going on freely even where the presence of gold has never been suspected, and that there are causes enough in nature to produce the solution of the gold in sufficient quantities to account for all the phenomena of both the vein and placer formations. The general theory with regard to the formation of these placer deposits and nuggets has been that they were the result of the de¬struction of pre-existing- vein-matter, which does not accord with the facts as shown in the deep placer deposits. RADIOACTIVE calcium has been used to learn whether calcium can be detected in iron saturated with carbon after it has been melted under CaO- A12O3- SiO2 slags similar to those used in the iron blast furnace. It was hoped that the radioactive tracer technique might make possible a general study of steelmaking reactions in which calcium or calcium oxide are involved. No calcium could be found in the metal under conditions which were favorable for the reduction of calcium, and it has been concluded that the calcium content of the iron was less than 6 x 10 - pct. Some of the problems encountered have been instructive with regard to pitfalls and limitations of tracer methods. Calcium oxide occurs in almost all iron- and steelmaking slags, and it is essential to the success of all commercial basic steelmaking processes. Calcium alloys are sometimes used in the deoxidation of steel and for the innoculation of gray iron. The element calcium is therefore almost as ubiquitous in the steel industry as are carbon and oxygen, but calcium has been thought to be completely immiscible with iron in both the liquid and the solid states.' It does not seem entirely unreasonable to Suppose, however, that some low concentration of calcium might exist in liquid iron under a basic slag with other conditions being favorable, just as silicon and other elements can be introduced into iron by reduction of their oxides from slags under appropriate circumstances. The radioactive tracer technique offered a more sensitive method than chemical analysis of testing this supposition. The reasons for interest in this investigation were strong enough to justify a recognized risk of failure. On the theoretical side, information on the distribution of calcium between liquid iron and a slag and the rate at which the equilibrium distribution is approached would contribute strongly to the general theory of slag-metal interface reactions. Furthermore, any evidence on the presence of calcium in liquid iron might provide a vital clue to the mechanism of the desulphurization of iron by slags. The purpose of any accident-prevention program is the curtailment or entire elimination of injuries and fatalities. It is a job that is never finished in the coal-mining industry. Day by day, on shift and off shift, men are exposed to injury and death in varying numbers. Seldom is it possible to lock up at the end of the shift and leave a mine plant in the care of a sleepy watchman, as can be done at most manufacturing plants. Even on off shifts there are maintenance and supply crews, coal cutters, pumpers and ventilation men exposed to danger. The prevention program of The Koppers Coal Co. recognizes two primary facts: First, no program can be successful without the full support of the management and complete knowledge of the job at hand on the part of every supervisor. Second, and equally important, is the full cooperation of every employee in observing the safety rules and practices set up by the management. Conscious day-to-day concern for his safety by the individual worker is the longest stride toward a good safety experience. How to accomplish the education of the individual worker and supervisor for safety is the problem of The Koppers Coal Co., as it is the problem of all coal companies. Safety Rules A simply stated set of Safety Rules and Practices for the government of employees is the starting point with The Koppers Coal Co. There are but 13 of these rules, which are short, easily understood and followed by a campaign of education and inspection.
