Mixtures of' MnS, ZFeO-SiO,, ZMnO.SiO, FeO, and MnO were prepared synthetically and used to study the planes ZFeO. Si0,-ZMnO.SiO,-MnS, FeO-MnO-MnS, and Fe0-MnO.Si0,-MnS in the quaternary system. Because the oxides and silicates studied flux MnS, inclusions in this system are partly liquid during rolling. Also, oxygen can modify subsurface inclusions through the reaction MnS + FeO—FeS + MnO during the soaking of ingots and the reheating of blooms and billets. NONMETALLIC inclusions in steel have long been a subject of study and conjecture because the properties of many steels are known to be affected by the the kind and amount of inclusions present. In free-machining steels, the type of inclusion present has a direct bearing on their machinability; in other steels, cleanliness is important and metallurgists direct their efforts at reducing the amount of non-metallic inclusions. Thus, the accumulation of knowledge about the formation and behavior of inclusions during all stages of steelmaking and processing should aid in improving the quality of steels and decreasing the production costs resulting from rejections. Previous studies of inclusions have contributed greatly to our understanding. The investigators have generally examined inclusions in finished steel. Boulger, Moorehead, and Garvey1 found that in Bessemer steels, low silicon contents results in globular sulfide inclusions with attendant high machin- ability ratings. Van vlack2 also found that low silicon contents favor inclusion morphology that contributes to high machinability ratings. Boquist and Stoll* found that silicon content affected sulfide inclusions and machinability of blooms, billets and bars more than did the finishing temperature in the range between 1775° and 2075°F. Carney and Rudolphy3 studied the distribution of sulfur, manganese, silicon, and carbon in a commercial ingot of resulfur-ized steel and found that silicon was concentrated near the bottom. This helped to explain why bottom cuts had poorer machinability. Klinger and Koch4 developed techniques for extracting inclusions from steel, and the technique devised by Gurry, Chris-takos, and stricker5 for extracting carbides can also be adapted to the study of inclusions. A different approach to the study of inclusions in steel consists of synthesizing the constituents that form inclusions and determining the phase eauilibria in the system that contains the constituents. The resulting phase diagrams can then be used to determine the effect of the various constituents upon each other. In this way, it becomes possible to under-

The behavior of gas-storage reservoirs subject to water drive is investigated through analog simulation on an electronic differential analyzer. The simulation technique developed on an LM-10 computer permits the prediction of reservoir volume or pressure resulting from the movement of water in the surrounding aquifer. The method developed on the analog computer consists of setting up an appropriate transfer-function circuit and feeding the arbitrary time-varying boundary conditions as an input signal. The input may be specified as gas reservoir pressure, pore volume or the water flux. Several cases studied include an isolated gas reservoir on a limited aquifer, interference among three reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer and the growth of gas-storage volume on an aquifer. It is concluded that the method developed on an electronic differential analyzer provides an excellent technique to simulate and investigate the behavior of gas reservoirs subject to water drive. The agreement between the reservoir performance as predicted from the simulation technique and as measured from actual field data is found to be better than the range usually encountered in predicting water-drive behavior. INTRODUCTION It is generally known that some gas-storage reservoirs are located on top of blanket sands of large extent, saturated with brine called aquifers. Because the volume of the body of water associated with aquifers is usually very large and water is compressible, the cyclic pressure variations encountered in normal storage service inevitably cause unsteady, compressible flow conditions in the adjacent aquifers. The solution to radial diffusivity equation for a limited aquifer for constant terminal conditions has been know111 since the early 1930's. The solution for the constant terminal conditions for an infinite aquifer was puhlished in 1949.2 The proldem of handling the unsteady flow of water through a porous medium with time-varying boundary conditions has been studied by many investigators through the use of graphical,3 digital4 computing techniques or on an R-C type of electrical analog called a reservoir analyzer.5 The digital computer performs a series of arithmetic calculations to superimpose the solutions of constant terminal conditions, while the R-C type of analyzer permits the simulation of the continuous medium by means of "lumped-cell" electrical resistance and capacitance elements based on finite-difference approximations. The graphical method is based on the convolution integral solution of the partial differential equalion. The purpose of the present study was to simulate the behavior of an aquifer on a general-purpose, electronic differential analyzer to obtain the influx of water or the change in pressure at the reservoir continuous1r and quickly. The use of the electronic differential analyzer was based on well known solutions for the constant terminal conditions already available in the literature.2,6-8 THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT MODEL. The gas reservoir (R) is described in relation to an aquifer in Fig. 1. The permeability and porosity of an aquifer sand, the viscosity of the brine, and the compressibility of the brine and the formation are assumed to be constant. It further is assumed that the blanket sand is not thick enough to give appreciable vertical pressure distribution. The model in consideration is circular with radial geometry. Nurnerical .solutions are presented to some problems of unsteady-state radial flow of gas in which Darcy's law holds. These solutions are intended to aid in explaining the observed behavior of gas wells during drawdown tests. The variation of viscosity and Z-factor with pressure is accounted for in the solutions. Results are presented for three types of problems: (I) unfractured wells producing at a constant rate, (2) fractured wells producing at a constant rate and (3) unfractured wells producing through a critical flow prover. In the critical-pow-prover solutions, a correction of the calculated well-bore pressure to account for non-Darcy flow is made. A good correlation is shown between the solutions to the problem of Type 1 and the corresponding diffusivity-equation solution. Using this correlation, the diffusivity solution may be used to obtain gas-well solutions. The solutions to the problems of Type 2 illustrate the difference in drawdown-curve behavior to be expected between fractured and unfractured gas wells. Methods for estimatting fracture radius and flow capacity are presented and verified from solutions of Type 2. The solutions to the problems of Type 3 illustrate the differences to be expected between critical-flow-prover drawdown tests and constant-rate tests. An equation is presented for correcting critical-flow-prover data to constant-rate conditions. A description of the methods used in obtaining the solulions appears in the Appendix. INTRODUCTION It is necessary for many engineering purposes, such as predicting future deliverability performance, to be able to relate bottom-hole flowing pressure, formation pressure and flow rate for conditions of stabilized flow in gas wells. This information is customarily given as a plot of on logarithmic co-ordinates. It is desirable to be able to predict stabilized performance curves for gas wells based on data obtained from drawdown tests of short duration. Tests of long duration may be wasteful of gas, and low-permeability wells do not stabilize in a short-duration test. Although it is now commonly recognized that non-Darcy flow plays a significant part in gas-well behavior, it is believed that an understanding of transient behavior of systems obeying Darcy's law is still important in the interpretation of short-term test data, and the prediction of stabilized performance curves therefrom. In this connection, an equation for correcting Darcy flow It seems likely that solutions of the type presented herein, combined with the non-Darcy flow correction of the type of Eq. 1 and the usual laminar-flow skin factor, could provide a model which would adequately explain transient gas-well behavior for times after the non-Darcy flow region (which should be confined to a small area surrounding the well) has been established. The solutions presented in this paper are for three types of problems: (1) unfractured wells producing at a constant rate, (2) fractured wells producing at a constant rate and (3) unfractured wells producing through a critical flow prover. In the problems of Types I and 2, no corrections for non-Darcy flow were made in the results presented, since it was reasoned that the constant-rate boundary condition would facilitate such a correction if it was desired later. For the problems of Type 3, however, a condition of varying flow rate required that a non-Darcy flow correction of the type of Eq. 1 be included. This was done. Based on the numerical results presented, a number of approximations and a correlation are presented which may be useful in analyzing gas-well test data. It is assumed that the system can be described as a finite cylindrical gas reservoir produced by a single cylindrical well located at the center of the reservoir. Flow is strictly radial.

A knowledge of the limits of miscibility between reservoir oil and possible injection fluids is required for selection of the optimum miscible-injection fluid. Limits of miscibility can be estimated from the results of equilibrium phase-behavior experiments. They can also be determined by means of displacement experiments conducted in a high-pressure sandpack. This paper describes the equipment and procedure which have been developed for determining miscibility conditions by stable displacement. A systematic series of displacements of a West Texas reservoir oil was carried out. The results indicate that, at constant pressure, miscibility is a function only of the pseudocritical temperature of the injection gas. This fact, together with improved experimental methods, makes the displacement technique a rapid, reliable means for determining miscibility conditions. In conjunction with the displacement experiments, phase diagrams were constructed for the oil with dry gas and propane and with dry gas and ethane. Phase behavior of the methane-ethane-propane system was determined at 110°F. The experimental work demonstrates the feasibility of using ethane-rich gases to reduce cost and pressure requirements for miscible displacement. INTRODUCTION In recent years, interest in the miscible displacement of oil by light hydrocarbon mixtures has been high. Many pilot and a few field scale projects have been started.1 These projects have made use of various methods for achieving miscibility: (1) the LPG-slug process, (2) the enriched-gas-drive process and (3) the high-pressure gas-drive process. Some field projects have been successful; the results of others are debatable. In general, projects which have performed best have involved the injection of an appreciable fraction of a pore volume of miscible material. Economical application of miscible displacement depends strongly on the cost of the miscible-injection fluid. If an appreciable fraction of a pore volume of material is required for successful application of these methods, a precise knowledge of the minimum requirements for miscibility in terms of composition of injection fluid is essential. Therefore, reliable experimental methods for determining miscibility conditions are important, and a procedure for estimating these conditions from the composition of the reservoir fluid is highly desirable. The subject of this paper is the problem of determining conditions which result in miscible displacement of oil by light hydrocarbon mixtures. Miscibility conditions can be estimated by means of equilibrium experiments conducted in a PVT cell, or they can be determined by means of high-pressure displacement experiments. This paper describes the equipment and procedure which have been developed for the determination of miscibility by high-pressure displacement experiments. These methods have been applied to the displacement of a West Texas reservoir oil with mixtures of dry gas, ethane and propane. In conjunction with the displacement experiments, triangular phase diagrams have been constructed for mixtures of the oil with dry gas and propane and with dry gas and ethane. The effect of injection-gas composition on conditions for miscible displacement in high-pressure sandpacks and cores has been the subject of several published papers.2-5 The experimental methods used in these investigations were such that displacements were unstable, and the effects of fingering and/or gravity layover are clearly evident in the results. Miscibility conditions were probably correct in spite of the instability phenomena, but the experiments evidently were time-consuming, and limited data were reported. Systematic high-pressure flow studies which would support a correlation of miscibility conditions have not been reported; however, Wilson5 has proposed the use of pseudocritical temperature of the injection gas as a parameter and Benham, et al,6 have based a miscibility correlation on observed and calculated equilibrium data.

Ultrasonic attenuation and stress were measured simultaneously as a function of strain for aluminum single crystals tested in compression. The propagation mode and polarization of the ultrasonic waves were chosen with reference to the theoretical analysis presented in Part I. Good experimental agreement was found with this theory and with earlier experimental work in tensile tests. Support is given to the contention that ultrasonic -attenuation measurements are much more sensitive to the early stages of plastic deformation than are conventional stress -strain measurements. Dislocation meclzanisms are suggested which are compatible with both the present and the earlier experimental observations. A brief historical introduction of previous work concerned with the study of dislocation motion by ultrasonic-attenuation measurements has been given in Part I. The purpose of the present experimental investigation was to make use of the theoretical considerations from Part I in order to gain further knowledge concerning dislocation motions during plastic deformation. Emphasis was placed on the choice of propagation modes and polarization of the waves, such that interactions between these waves and dislocation movement on a specific slip system could be investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Since the primary concern of this investigation was dislocation damping, other sources of damping were eliminated as much as possible. The test specimens were 0.5-in.-diam single crystals of 99.99+ pct pure aluminum grown from the melt by a modified Bridgman technique. Ultrasonic-attenuation measurements were made at a frequency of 10 megacycles per sec using a Style 56A001 Ultrasonic Attenuation Comparator manufactured by Sperry Products Inc. after a design by Chick, An- derson, and Truell.1 At this frequency the particle vibrations are essentially adiabatic and thermo-elastic damping should be absent. This frequency was selected since it was one of the frequencies used by Hikata et al.2 n conjunction with tensile tests on aluminum crystals, thus allowing direct comparison with this work. The use of quartz-crystal transducers insures that the amplitude of vibration is not sufficient to cause the break away of the dislocation loops from weak pinning points. The quartz-crystal transducers used all possessed a resonance frequency of 10 megacycles per sec and were thin circular discs 0.375 in. in diameter. X-cut crystals were used to generate the longitudinal waves and AC-cut crystals to generate the transverse waves. Aluminum was chosen as the basic material because it is a typical fcc metal whose deformation behavior is well-known and because the most recent work at the time the present research was initiated was that by Hikata et al. who used aluminum. The present tests were run in compression to see if such tests could be satisfactorily run in compression without being severely masked by grip effects.. A second reason was to compare the results in compression with those of the tension experiments of Hikata et at. Finally, shorter specimens could be run in compression with less over-all damping than in tension. All of the aluminum-crystal test specimens used were oriented for plastic deformation by single slip; i.e., they possessed the orientation having a maximum Schmid factor of 0.5. Because of the well-known time dependence 3 of plastic strain at constant stress, the test specimens were subjected to a quasi-static loading. Previous investigations4-' have indicated that attenuation after plastic deformation is also time-dependent, so any continuous loading of the specimen would show that changes in attenuation were also a function of strain rate. By loading the specimen to a given stress level and holding it constant until the recovery process was essentially complete, the time dependence was eliminated. The quartz transducer was permanently bonded to the aluminum crystal using Eastman 910 cement. Excess cement was removed from around the quartz with DMF (dimethyl formamide). Eastman 910 was found to be far superior for bonding, especially with regard to the shear-wave transducer, since it formed a solid bond which readily supports shear-wave propagation. The reaction between liquid zirconium and graphite at temperatures above 2000 °C has been investigated. The reaction products were found to be carbon-saturated zirconium metal and ZrC which formed between the graphite and the metal. Parabolic growth behavior was observed for the ZrC Phase at all temperatures of this investigation. The parabolic growth constant at temperatures between 2000° and 2860°C was measured to be 1.83 exp 84,300/RT) sq cm per sec. The reaclion mechanism was proposed to be the rapid carbon saturation of the liquid metal and the formation of ZrC at the metal-carbide interface with diffusion of carbon through the ZrC, the "rate - determining step" of the reaction. The concentration-independent diffusion coefficient of carbon in ZrC, (DZrC), was expressed as 0.95 exp? 78,700/RT) sq cm per sec. This value mas calculated using the temperature-invariant ZrC phase fields proposed in the literature. The [ZrQiq)] — [ZYQiq) + ZrC] phase boundary over the temperature range 2000° to 2800°C was determined and the ZrC + C eutectic temperature was found to be 2890° ± 50°C. ThE Group IV and VB transition-metal refractory carbides are of interest because of their high melting points, high temperature strength properties, and relative inertness in certain corrosive environments. The present-day understanding of these materials, however, is limited by the general unavailability of accurate and reliable physical and chemical property data. This is due primarily to the difficulties associated with the preparation of suitable, high-density, high-purity carbide samples, and the achievement and control of uniform high-temperature environments. Accurate measurement of temperature is also an important factor limiting the reliability of reported data. The Zr-C reaction was selected for investigation because of the high melting point (>34000C) and favorable nuclear properties of the reaction product, ZrC. The direct reaction method afforded an opportunity to obtain kinetic data on the fully dense carbide. In this paper, layer-growth techniques were used to estimate the diffusivity of carbon in ZrC and to investigate the phase equilibria in the Zr-C system at temperatures above 2000°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND DATA Crystal bar zirconium (99.9 pct Zr), purchased from the Nuclear Materials and Engineering Corp., and ZTA graphite (99.9+ pct) were used in this study. The analyses of the materials are listed in Table I. A schematic of the high-temperature carburization apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The sample was a zirconium metal charge in a 1/2 -in.-ID graphite crucible which was capped with a tightly fitting graphite stern. The crucible and stem were designed to closely approximate black-body conditions. The graphite crucible was packed in lampblack (outgassed 1 hr at 2100°C) which provided insulation and thermal stability to the system. The inert atmosphere was maintained by a constant flow of high-purity argon or helium gas. The nozzle-diffuser section on the top flange was sufficient to prevent back-diffusion of air into the system. Chemical analysis of the carburized samples revealed oxygen and nitrogen concentrations of less than 44 and 20 ppm, respectively. The sample was heated by induction with a Westing-house 5 kw-450 kc power source. Temperature was measured with a Milletron two-color pyrometer which was sighted into the crucible by reflection from an overhead front surface mirror. Optical losses due to glass absorption and light reflection at air-glass interfaces were minimized by the employment of the dynamic-gas seal. It was found that no correction was required for the front surface reflector. The pyrometer was calibrated periodically against a U.S. Bureau of Standards tungsten ribbon secondary standard. Temperatures inside the crucible were also calibrated against the Zr-ZrC eutectic (1850°C)1 and the Nb-Nb2C eutectic (2335°C)2,3 temperatures and agreed to within ±10°C of these values. The elastic earth waves produced naturally by earthquakes have been used for a long time as evidence from which to draw conclusions in ; regard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The I elastic earth waves produced artificially by occasional explosions and ' recorded by seismological observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the geology of the intervening area. Intentionally produced elastic earth waves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The scismic method of working geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earth waves, has developed almost clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations; and, in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of Texas and Louisiana, it has scored the most brilliant success. The first proposal for the use of artificial earthquakes in the study of velocity of elastic earth waves in the surface formations of the earth's crust were made before 1888, by the English seismologists mallet and Abbot. Partly on the basis of their work, A. Schmidt in 1888 proposed the use of time-(Iistnncc graphs of artificial earthquakes to study the variation of vellocity with depth. Belar in 1902 proposed the practical 'application of such investigation in connection with boring tunnels. Galitzcn repeated1y (1912. I9IX) proposed the use of explosions to study the velocity of the longitudinal and transverse waves in the uppermost formations and pointed out that the velocity depended in a high degree on the physical character of the beds and that from changes in the velocity, conclusions could be drawn in regard to the composition of the beds. Somewhat the same thought was proposed by von dem Borne (1908), by Benndorf, Udden and others.' Although little information is available concerning small-scale equipment for dust collection in laboratories, it is possible to adapt standard equipment for laboratory use. Dust from laboratory processes may be collected by cyclone separators, filters, electrostatic separators, scrubbers, and settling chambers. IN recent years much attention has been given to recovery, treatment, and disposal of dusts discharged into the atmosphere from operations of industry. considerable data has been accumulated on both operation and design of dust-collector equipment for commercial installations. On the other hand, there is almost no published data on design and construction of small-scale equipment to handle dust problems that arise in the ore-dressing laboratory. Dust-collection equipment such as multiclones, single-cyclones, scrubbers, chemical and mechanical filters, settling chambers, and electrostatic separators has proved its efficiency for collecting dust in industry. In the laboratory, however, the engineer is faced with the problem of collecting small quantities of dust, inexpensively, without diverting the major effort from the metallurgical problem to the problem of collecting dust produced by the process. For most applications standard dust-collection equipment is too large for use in the laboratory; however, for control of dust in large working areas it is often possible to use a standard dust collector, such as an air filter, with branch ducts to eliminate a health hazard. For example, the well-furnished sample-preparation room containing small jaw crushers, rolls, and pulverizers, in addition to the riffles and screens necessary for preparation of samples, presents a perennial source of dust. The authors' experience has shown that a combination system consisting of overhead branch ducts to the individual equipment and floor ducts with grills, where applicable, connected to a central dust collector effectively removes dust generated in preparation of samples. Fig. 1 is a sketch of a downdraft dust-collector for table installation. Similar systems can be built with floor grids. For portable equipment such as laboratory vibrating screens this type of installation with a steel grill to support the heavy load is reasonably efficient. Overhead branch ducts to individual crushing and grinding equipment, although efficient, must be carefully controlled by dampers to prevent excess loss or a change in the composition of the sample. Change in sample composition can result from excess velocity, which causes selective removal of constituents of low specific gravity. Fig. 2' shows the theoretical effect of terminal velocity on spherical particles of different specific gravities in air and water under action of gravity. Fig. 3 shows the effect of air velocity on composition of CaCO, coal mixtures. Although the entrainment of dust particles in a moving air stream is the basic mechanism by which all dust-collection equipment functions, usually intake velocity of the dust-collection system must be controlled to prevent loss of part of the sample. As an example of what may happen when excess velocities are used, a mixture of 50 pct coal and 50 pct limestone was crushed to —10 mesh and fed to a pulverizer equipped with an overhead dust-collection system. Fig. 4 shows the overhead dust-collection equipment used in this test. The pulverizer was set to give a product 95 pct —100 mesh in two stages. Velocity of air passing over the lip of the pulverizer was measured with an anemometer. After grinding, the finished product was analyzed to show the amount of calcium carbonate present. Fig. 3 shows graphically the increase in calcium carbonate as velocity through the dust-collection duct was increased. These data show that at a velocity of 1 ft per sec little if any of the coal was entrained by the overhead draft. At the maximum velocity, about 6.5 ft per sec, approximately 7 pct more coal was entrained than calcium carbonate. From an operating standpoint, this problem can be remedied easily by dampering the line to control velocity. The lowest velocity commensurate with satisfactory dust control should be used to prevent excess loss and, in some cases, selective dust loss. Collection of Dust in Laboratory Processes As in industry, the engineer desires to collect efficiently the dust produced by processes being investigated on a laboratory scale. However, in the collection of laboratory dusts he is faced with two additional problems: 1—The volumes of gas and the quantity of dust that must be recovered are small when compared with the capacity of standard dust-collector equipment, which must be scaled down in design except for collection of dust from large pilot-plant operations. 2—In addition, because of the variety of problems studied in the process laboratory, the engineer cannot design today a dust collector that will meet the conditions imposed by the processes of tomorrow. Sometimes, therefore, he must compromise collection efficiency to minimize the cost of fabrication and the amount of time diverted from the metallurgical to the dust-control problem. For collection of dust from laboratory processes a cyclone separator, filters, electrostatic separators, scrubbers, and settling chambers can usually be adapted for small-scale operations. A commercial Ti-Fe-Cr alloy, Ti-150, exhibits a martensitic transformation on cooling and two nucleation and growth reactions, one above and one below the Mg-Mf region, on isothermal holding below the single-phase ß temperature range. The reactions were followed by metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and microhardness methods. THE rapidly expanding engineering application of titanium and its alloys makes increasingly urgent an adequate knowledge of the effect of heat treatment on this material. The work herein reported is an attempt to determine certain aspects of the behavior of a commercially available alloy, Ti-150, during heat treatment. The alloy, with a nominal composition of 2.7 pct Cr, 1.3 pct Fe, 0.25 pct 0, 0.02 pct N, and 0.02 pct C, was received in the as-rolled condition as a 3/4 in. round. Slugs 0.11 to 0.12 in. thick were cut under a coolant using a silicon carbide wheel. Preliminary work established that the alloy consists of two phases, a (hexagonal close-packed) and /3 (body-centered cubic), at temperatures below 1750" to 1775"F, and of only /3 phase at higher temperatures. The slugs were heated for 1 hr in air at 1800°F to form a single-phase /3 matrix, then transferred to molten tin (1250° to 1650°F) or lead (1150°F and below) for isothermal holding. Holding temperatures ranged from 700° to 1650°F, times from 0.001 to 23 hr. The treated slugs were then sectioned, one part for metallographic examination and diamond pyramid hardness, the other, after deep etching to remove the high oxygen surface,' for comparative lattice parameter determination and X-ray phase identification. Hardness measurements were taken on the lightly etched surfaces of the metallographic specimens; a 1000 g load on a 136° diamond pyramid was used. Five impressions on each sample were made and the average of the hardness calculated. The use of microhardness measurements to follow the course of an isothermal transformation reaction is undesirable because of the possibility of wide differences in microconstituent hardness.' They were used in this case, however, because of the small amount of material available. At the higher transformation temperatures, where the above-mentioned objection was apparent, the readings were proportioned to correspond to the estimated ratio of transformed and untransformed constituents present. At lower temperatures, resulting in much finer microconstituents, the microhardness measurements were more uniform. The standard deviation of the mean of five impressions calculated from these latter values was 4.2 DPH. Employing 2a limits (probability 0.95) the experimental error of the hardness measurements averages was 8.4 DPH. The etchant used was composed of one part glyc-erol and one part 48 pct hydrofluoric acid." Of a number of etches tried, this one appeared most satisfactory. All micrographs were taken at 500X magnification and with oblique lighting to permit easier identification of the acicular structure resulting from rapid cooling. No advantage was gained by using polarized light for metallographic examination. Phase identification and lattice parameter measurements were made with a North American Philips high angle spectrometer in conjunction with a recording potentiometer. Considerable difficulty was encountered with some of the lattice parameter measurements because of the extreme broadness of the few diffraction lines obtained from samples consisting mainly of strained, untempered, quenched structures.

A mathematical model of reservoir behavior during one cycle of the intermittent steam injection process is presented in this paper. A cycle of the process is considered to be composed of three stages: injection, condensation and production. The model concentrates on behavior during the production stage. The influence of several parameters on production improvement is described, using the results obtained with a numerical equivalent of the model. Reservoir system parameters considered are thickness, reservoir thermal conductivity, oil viscosity, solution gas-oil ratio and the change in oil effective permeability with temperature. Operating parameters investigated are heat injection rate, steam temperature and cumulative injection time. In the face of considerable uncertainty, the model appears to give a fair prediction of the behavior observed during an actual test. This makes the model a useful means of selecting projects. It is shown that the model may also be utilized to select an optimum set of operating conditions for a particular project. Results of this study show the extent to which production improvement depends on each of the parameters investigated and give an indication of the range of system conditions within which the process would be effective. INTRODUCTION In recent years the intermittent steam injection or steam soak process of oil recovery has become a popular method of improving recovery in reservoirs bearing high-viscosity hydrocarbons. Production improvement due to the process results from heating the reservoir near the wellbore. The process is applied on an individual well basis and is executed in a series of cycles, each consisting of three stages: injection, condensation (the soaking period) and production. During the injection stage, high-pressure steam is injected into the reservoir surrounding the well-bore. This study assumes that injection is carried out over the entire vertical section of the reservoir rock that can be exposed to fluid injection. The condition of steam entering the reservoir is considered to fall within the following limits: (1) steam pressures less than 1,000 psig, (2) steam temperatures between 300 and 700F and (3) steam quality less than 90 percent. The last restriction is due to equipment limitations. Normally, injection re maintained for less than 3 weeks. After termination of injection, the condensation stage begins. The well is shut in for several days, supposedly to make certain that the injected steam condenses. This condensation would insure the retention of injected heat. The production stage is initiated when the well is opened again. Reservoir response during this stage determines the effectiveness of the process (response is defined as the oil production rates, the water production rates and the wellbore temperatures observed during the entire production stage). The immediate response of the reservoir is sometimes quite good. Sets of case histories by Longl and by Owens and Suter2 give some typical figures for response. Duration of the production stage is equal to the time needed for the oil production rate to decline to some predetermined value. This usually requires 4 to 6 months. Termination of the production stage coincides with the start of the next cycle. The process is continued, cycle by cycle, until it becomes unprofitable to continue. One simple model2 and two more sophisticated models3,4 of the process have been presented. These are based on fundamentally different assumptions than those used in this investigation. AS far back as 40 years ago management made the initial steps toward utilizing the large amount of reject marble produced by the dimension stone quarries in sized products. In 1947 the Calcium Products Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. was organized to manufacture crushed, ground, and screened products from Georgia marble.* It became obvious early in operations that salability of any products of this type was determined by several factors: high calcium carbonate content, whiteness, dryness, and cleanness. Because no reject material could consistently meet these specifications, Calcium Products Div. now operates three underground quarries for raw material feed. In underground operations no stripping is required, surface contamination and trash are eliminated, weather causes no operational difficulties, and the raw material is maintained dry for plant processing.

When oil is displaced from a horizontal formation by another fluid of lower density, the latter tends to override the former in the shape of a tongue owing to gravity segregation. This gravity tongue has an adverse influence on the oil recovery. If the fluids are miscible, diffusion (mixing) takes place at the interfacial boundary of the gravity tongue. This mixing should have a favorable effect on oil recovery. The report describes a laboratory study of the magnitude of the mixing zone under various conditions, so as to assess the effect of diffusion on oil recovery both in laboratory experiments and under actual field conditions. The technique used enables visual observation and measurement of the size of the mixing zone in transparent glass-powder packs. The results show that in experiments in small models and cores the width of the mixing zone may well be of the same order of magnitude as the height of the model. In such cases oil recovery is favorably affected by mixing. It can further be concluded that, under conditions prevailing in the field, mixing of the injected fluid with reservoir oil is equal to that caused by molecular diffusion alone, eddy-mixing not taking place to any appreciable extent. A simple calculation, then, shows that molecular diffusion is too small for a beneficial effect to be expected from the injection of miscible fluids in horizontal or nearly horizontal reservoirs unless pay zones are thin. INTRODUCTION This paper gives results of experiments made on the mixing which occurs when a miscible displacement is carried out in a horizontal reservoir. This mixing takes place at the interfacial boundary of the gravity tongue formed when the lighter injected fluid overrides the oil present in the reservoir. The object of the experiments was to simulate the field case where, for example, propane with a viscosity of 0.075 cp under reservoir conditions displaces an oil of viscosity 0.6 cp. In the experiments the lighter fluid had a viscosity of about 1 cp and the heavier one a viscosity of about 8 cp, so as to obtain the same viscosity ratio. In order to enable the results to be compared with those published in the literature, a set of experiments with viscosity ratio equal to one was also performed. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The technique developed for the purpose enables the width of the mixing zone to be studied as a function of time and place. A glass-powder pack is saturated with a water-glycerine mixture of suitable viscosity, which represents the reservoir fluid. The pack is then rendered transparent by dissolving sufficient ammonium thiocyanate in the mixture to obtain a solution with a refractive index matching that of the glass powder. Alkaline water to which phenol-phthalein has been added is used as the lighter and less-viscous displacing fluid. In those places where mixing or diffusion of the two liquids occurs, the slightly acidic ammonium-thiocyanate solution neutralizes the alkali in the water, and the glass pack shows up white against the red-colored invading water. If a black cloth is hung over the back of the apparatus, the transparent part of the glass pack appears black. In this way the position of the two phases and the transition zone between them is clearly visible, as shown in Fig. 1 (where the red-colored invading water is the grey-shaded zone lying uppermost). In all experiments the amount of alkali in the water was chosen such that the upper contour corresponded to a concentration of 5 per cent of the dense liquid. The lower contour is determined by the size of the glass grains and the thickness of the pack and, consequently, varies from experiment to experiment. Corresponding concentrations of the dense liquid range from about 97 per cent for packs of small grain size (permeability = 1 darcy) to about 95 per cent for those with large grains

SINCE the first atomic bomb exploded over Japan, a great deal of speculation has been published about the use of atomic energy instead of coal for the production of power. Atomic energy, in time, may displace coal for this purpose, but atomic energy will not displace coal in supplying chemical raw materials to the rapidly expanding carbon-chemicals market. Modern civilization demands large quantities of carbon compounds and the logical source of many of these is coal. Consequently, many progressive operators are considering the possibilities of the utilization of coal as a chemical raw material as never before. Furthermore, the demand for clean, smokeless, and ashless fuels will continue to increase and the only way to handle coal under those conditions is to take it apart, just as crude petroleum is taken apart. One can readily imagine where the petroleum industry would be now if it had insisted on selling customers only crude oil, perhaps emulsified with a little salt water to correspond to the moisture and mineral matter in raw coal. The time seems to be coming at an accelerated pace when mine operators will find that competing for a highly selective fuel market by producing a larger tonnage at smaller cost will be less profitable than to increase the value of a smaller tonnage many fold by producing something more valuable to industry and civilization than raw coal. For example, about 750,000 tons of carbon black selling for $50 to $60 per ton was produced in the United States in 1945. This tonnage is insignificant compared with the total production of coal in the United States, but a very tidy tonnage, together with the coal necessary to operate the process, for any mine operator fortunate enough to obtain a method of producing a better carbon black from coal. From the point of view of tonnage, the manufacture of coke of various kinds and its by-products is at present the most important source of carbon chemicals from coal. Nearly 20 per cent of the coal mined in this country is used for this purpose. A large proportion of the coke is used for the production of iron and steel, but even in this operation a considerable part of the coke is used for a chemical purpose; that is, the reduction of the ore to metallic iron. In addition, large quantities of coke are used in manufacturing many important products that find their way into the market. POSSIBILITIES OF ACETYLENE One of the important chemicals manufactured from coke is calcium carbide, from which many products are made. One of these is acetylene. This hydrocarbon can also be manufactured from natural gas or from waste oil-refinery gas and' these industries will probably offer competition for the manufacture of acetylene. THE simultaneous influence of time and temperature upon the tempering process in steel is well known. Hollomon and Jaffe¹ have expressed the effect of time and temperature upon the progress of tempering by a single parameter, T (c + log t); where T is the absolute temperature; t, the tempering time; and c, a constant characteristic of the steel and treatment. It was found that when hardness data for plain carbon and low alloy steels were plotted vs. this parameter, a master tempering curve was obtained which satisfied all the data for a given steel and a given hardening treatment. Roberts, Grobe, and Moersch² successfully applied the tempering parameter to various tool steels, including high speed steel for tempering times ranging from 6 min to 100 hr. The influence of tempering time and temperature upon the physical properties of high speed steel has also been extensively investigated.'" Recently, the use of induction heating for very rapid tempering treatments has received attention. The authors% have shown that tempering treatments of only a few seconds duration may be successfully applied to plain carbon and low alloy steel. However, the influence of such short tempering treatments in high speed steel has not been explored. Since high speed steel is a highly alloyed steel exhibiting physical reactions during tempering that are often relatively slow and large in magnitude, it is an interesting steel for the study of tempering reactions. It was the purpose of the present investigation, therefore, to study the early progress of reactions leading to secondary hardness in high speed steel, type 6-5-4-2, and to determine if induction-tempering treatments of a few seconds duration are able to produce results equal to those of more conventional long-time tempering cycles. Experimental Details The chemical compositions for two different heats of W-Mo high speed steel used in this study are given in Table I. Table II summarizes the heat treatment given various groups of specimens cut 21/2 in. long and centerless ground to ¼ in. diam. Hardening treatments consisted of preheating to 1600°F (870°C) for V2 hr and then oil quenching from 2250°F (1230°C). Heat I was subjected to the high temperature in a salt bath for 3 min, while specimens of heat II were austenitized in a carbon-block muffle furnace for 10 min. Specimens of series E were immediately refrigerated to — 318°F (— 195°C) in liquid nitrogen following the hardening treatment to transform the major portion of the retained aus-tenite. Specimens of series F and G were subzero cooled to — 100°F (-75°C) in a dry ice-alcohol mixture. Induction tempering was performed with a Lepel high frequency converter operating at a frequency of approximately 300,000 cycles per sec. Heating cycles were controlled and recorded for each specimen using a chromel-alumel thermocouple, percussion welded to the surface of the specimen, and a modified high speed instrument with a timer previously used and described.' Temperature oscillation of the specimens, while being held at the tempering temperature, was ± 15°F (8°C). Tempering Treatments: After hardening, specimens were tempered between 900" and 1500°F (480" and 815°C) to study the progress of retained austenite decomposition and secondary hardening. The specimens tempered in salt for 1 hr (series C, G, and I) were considered to represent conventional treatment and are used for comparison with rapid tempering treatments. Several induction-tempering cycles were employed: 1—flash tempering, i.e., induction heating to the tempering temperature and immediately cooling (series A, E, and F); 2—induction heating for 60 sec at temperature (series B); and 3—double-induction tempering by two successive heating and cooling cycles (series D). All specimens tempered by induction were heated at an initial rate of 450°F (250°C) per sec except those of series E, which were heated at an initial rate of 1300 °F

Thermal arrest, hot-stage microscopy, and transtnission electron microscopy techniques have been employed to study the transformations in low-carbon iron and Fe-9 pct Ni alloys. In continuous cooling experiments, each alloy transforms at an essentially constant temperature for cooling rates below the critical rate required for martensite formation. However, high-tenzperature transformation in pure iron takes place by a different mechanism than that in the 9 pct Ni alloys. Pure iron exhibits an equi-a a structure with a low and random dislocation density while the 9 pct Ni alloy exhibits a cell or lathlike substructure analogous to that of low-carbon martensite. This same substructure characterizes upper bainite in higher-carbon inaterials. UNTIL relatively recently, diffusionless transformations have been considered to take place by the same mechanism and have been termed mar-tensitic transformations.l-3 The most characteristic feature2 of this mode of transformation is the shape change produced by a shear deformation and growth of the product phase frequently occurs at an extremely high velocity approaching that of an elastic wave.4'5 A different mechanism of diffusionless transformation was recognized first in Cu-Ga and other copper-base alloys.6,7 From the absence of surface tilting in these alloys, it has been concluded that transformation is not accomplished by the cooperative shear displacements that occur in mar-tensitic reactions. Transformation presumably takes place by the rapid movement of an incoherent interface which is capable of propagating across parent grain boundaries. Although the transformation is diffusionless in the macroscopic sense, advancement of these interfaces is accomplished by an atom by atom rearrangement. Transformations of this type therefore require thermal activation and are generally operative only at high temperature. Although requiring short-range diffusion at the interface, propagation still occurs so rapidly that the reaction cannot be suppressed with normal cooling rates.7 The resulting microstructures exhibit large, irregular-shaped regions of the product phase, which are essentially free of crystallographic features. Consequently, these reactions have been termed massive transformations. Transformation by the massive mechanism has been reported to occur in ferrous systems involving pure iron and binary alloys of iron with nickel, chromium, and silicon by Gilbert and owen.' The Fe-Ni system is of special interest in that the massive transformation was observed in alloys with less than 15 pct Ni while alloys having more than about 28 pct Ni transformed by the conventional mar-tensitic mechanism. By employing cooling rates substantially higher than those used by Gilbert and Owen, Swanson and Parr have been able to suppress the massive transformation in alloys with 0 to 10 pct Ni9 and produce martensite as revealed by surface relief. The massive transformation in the alloys having less than 15 pct Ni was identified by the lack of surface relief and an irregular rather than clearly acicular microstructure.' Speich and Swann, using thin-foil electron microscopy, identified three distinctly different structures10 in quenched binary Fe-Ni alloys. From 0 to 4 pct Ni the structure consisted of blocky grains of a with a low and random dislocation density. Alloys with 4 to 25 pct Ni exhibited a cell structure with a high dislocation density; and at greater than 25 pct Ni the structure consisted of internally twinned plates. The structural change at approximately 4 pct Ni suggests that alloys with low nickel content transform by a different mechanism than those with intermediate nickel contents and the transition from the cellular to the internally twinned structures at approximately 25 pct Ni is analogous to the transition from needles to internally twinned plates that occurs over a narrow range of carbon contents in Fe-C martensites.11,12 Conventional bainitic and martensitic modes of austenite decomposition operate in ternary Fe-C-Ni alloys having less than 10 pct Ni. This investigation was conducted in order to explore the conditions under which the massive, bainitic, and martensitic transformations occur and the relationships between these modes of decomposition.

This paper reviews recent developments in the application of classification practice to the origination of fine-grinding flow sheets and traces the history of the mechanical classifier from its initial application for separating cyanide process sands and slimes down to its present six or more distinctly different applications at copper concentrators; it undertakes to show also, by reference to diagrammatic fine-grinding flow sheets and accompanying operating data from nine copper concentrators in western North America, the advantages gained from improved classi-ficiation flow sheets at these properties in terms of reduced grinding costs, improved flexibility of operation or increased recovery. Comparison is only made between different fine-grinding flow sheets at a given plant and no attempt is made to compare different concentrators, on account of ore variations and differences in metallurgical objectives sought,. The adoption of the flotation process in recent years, and especially the development of selective flotation, has brought a demand for much finer grinding than formerly. This has caused much thought to be given to grinding efficiency, and today there is hardly a mill where the grinding flow sheet is not under close study and subject to frequent changes. When closed-circuit grinding was introduced into metallurgy some years ago, its value was recognized at once, and since then the combination of mills and classifiers has been regarded and operated as a grinding unit. Apart from variations in both the grinding and classifying elements of this unit, there have been many variations in grouping tried by different mills to suit varying conditions of ore and plant limitations. Although operators feel that in most cases their present flow sheets are on trial, and the data on present work are often incomplete, we have felt that a discussion of the progress that has been made and an endeavor to show present trends and their results should be of use to the profession. We have therefore prepared flow sheets of some of the larger mills with which we have been in contact and present them with available data as to their results, in the hope that they may be of service now rather than later when practice may have become more standardized and more complete records and analyses have been made. R. W. Jones (Senior Exploration Geologist, Standard Oil Co. of California, Box 250, Seattle, Wash.) -Mr. McRae6 and his colleagues are to be congratulated for providing a more coherent structural synthesis of the complex structure in the Courtland-Gleeson area, Cochise County, Arizona, than the "gigantic thrust breccia" concept of Gilluly. 4 However, a few problems of interpretation remain. It is the intent of this note to point out some of these problems, and, drawing on my own work in the area as well as the work of McRae6 and Gilluly, 4 to suggest some interpretations which differ from those previously published. GRAVITY SLIDES In an unpublished manuscript (Jones5) I previously argued that most of the complex structures in the Courtland-Gleeson area can be most reasonably interpreted in terms of gravity sliding caused by uplift and eastward tilting of Jurassic intrusives and associated Paleozoic rocks. Although the field work and drill hole data described by McRae6 provided excellent documentation for two important gravity slides, McRae6 interpreted the basic structure in the Courtland-Gleeson area in terms of major eastward directed thrusting. John Grifien (Pittsburgh)—I wish to congratulate the authors on this paper, which, I am sure, will promote a clearer conception of the various criteria which have been advanced as measures of coal-cleaning performance. Their clear descriptions of the more important criteria that have been advanced and explanations of their meaning and application have been sorely needed and, if widely promulgated and followed, should remove much of the confusion which, heretofore, has been evident. I suggest that much of this confusion has also arisen from lack of common agreement as to the exact meaning of the words and terms used in our discussions of this subject. I am sure I have been equally guilty in this respect and suggest it is time that we select a committee to study vocabulary as well as criteria, so that common understanding and agreement can be had. Thus, I suggest, that the title of this paper should have used the words "coal-cleaning performance" and not "coal-washery performance." My understanding is that "washery" refers to a complete plant and it has additional functions to that of coal-cleaning, such as control of size, moisture, etc. Also, I do not agree with the authors that the formulas given in their paper, the Fraser and Yancey formulas, are necessarily the only ones that can be called efficiency formulas. When a dictionary is consulted one realizes that the words "efficiency" and "efficient" have not precise meanings but only very general ones and must be further defined for each particular use, if they are to have any precise meaning. To my mind, the first of the Fraser and Yancey formulas given should never be used as expressing "efficiency" alone but only by the fuller phrase which truly expresses the kind of efficiency it states, which is "coal recovery efficiency." For complete clarity we then need only define "coal" for the particular circumstances under which the formula is used. This would recognize the fact, fully explained by the authors, that the limits in coal qualities imposed by the market have imposed a factor—and a variable factor—which has influenced any answer obtained by this formula. Such a procedure makes it entirely practical and logical to use the values of any of the qualities of coal—ash, sulphur, phosphorus, specific gravity—or a combination of them to define what is coal for that particular use of the formula. Further, it is clear to me that the criteria to be used must be dictated by the objective in view and the use for which the data are obtained. The authors clearly point out that the Fraser and Yancey coal-recovery efficiency formula is influenced by three factors, "one is determined by the coal, one is dictated by market or use conditions, and one is an inherent characteristic of the cleaning unit itself." The formula which uses the inverse of misplaced material as a measure of efficiency is also a coal recovery efficiency formula and is influenced in like manner by these three factors. As the authors point out, both are useless in obtaining data which enables a direct and valid comparison of the performance of a given cleaning unit on two coals where the other two factors vary or of the performance of two or more cleaning units of different types unless the values of the other two factors are identical. Much of the confusion in our discussions of and literature on coal cleaning has come from failure to understand clearly this fact. Many such comparisons have been made from which erroneous conclusions have been drawn. I am, therefore, particularly glad to see the authors' emphasis on 4?-1e criteria which indicate the "sharpness of separation. I feel that these are the essential criteria

FOR many years gravitational classification has been employed as a basic tool in beneficiation of minerals and coal. While improvements have been made to increase efficiency and fields of application, the basic flow pattern has remained relatively unchanged in most gravitational classifiers. Feed slurry is introduced into a settling pool wherein the coarser solids settle against either an upward or horizontal fluid current, or a combination of both, and are withdrawn in a concentrated underflow stream. The finer solids below the classification point possess too low a settling velocity and thus are primarily swept out through a weir overflow by the bulk of the fluid. Because of its simplicity, efficiency, and low power and maintenance costs, gravitational classification finds a wide acceptance for separations in the range of 20 to 325 mesh. Two factors resulting from the basic flow pattern employed in gravitational classification present difficult problems for certain installations. If classification at 60 to 200 mesh of separation is desired, capacity in terms of gallons of overflow per minute per square foot of settling pool area must be low to allow required solids to settle to the underflow. If a thousand or more gal per min of feed slurry must be handled, either a very large classifier or a number of smaller units must be employed, taking up floor space and head room. Examples of this are the large classifiers, wetting tanks, or settling tanks used in the coal industry for recovery of process water from fine solids. Units as large as 50 or 60 ft in diam and 60 ft high, requiring substantial amounts of steel, are not uncommon. A second factor is the lack of self-regulation in gravitational classification. As overflow rate increases, mesh of separation increases correspond-ingly. This normally heightens difficulties of bene-ficiation. If a fine mesh of separation is required at varying feed rates, the problem is more than doubled in complexity. One of the primary advantages of gravitational classification is low power requirement. Gravity feeds or very low pressure heads are employed. However, fluid energy is still present in the inlet stream and provision must be made to dissipate it properly to obtain uniform upward or horizontal currents. Rather than waste this energy, it would be desirable to utilize it to secure a greater degree of self-regulation and simultaneously increase classification capacity per square foot of area. A free vortex could be realized by a tangential entry of feed, resulting in generation of centrifugal force to complement force of gravity in its action. With greater force it should be possible to gain finer separation at any overflow rate per square foot of settling pool area as compared with conventional gravitational classification. Furthermore, as feed rate increases, centrifugal force will also increase and at least partially offset faster currents sweeping solid particles to the overflow. A more stable classification point should result. The liquid-solid cyclone is the most common application of a free vortex in the beneficiation field.' Many previous papers have emphasized uniformity of flow pattern within the cyclone which is largely responsible for the sharp classification that can be obtained.'-4 If a free vortex can be maintained in a non-pressurized vessel with a free surface it may be possible to realize a third advantage of sharper classification. This open-top cyclone would then achieve a minimum energy loss comparable to that with conventional classifiers, and a mesh of separation coarser than 150 mesh, extending the range of application of the free vortex. This is not presently possible with ordinary cyclones. To test the applicability of the free vortex to gravitational classification, a 30-in. diameter open-top cyclone was constructed at Northwestern University. The cylindrical section was 30 in. high and the conical section included an angle of 60".
