The term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater inechanization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar inodel built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimenbions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein. A computer program has been developed to simulate evacuation of a mine in various configurations. The simulation input variables include characteristics of the mine, expressed in the form of a network of passages, properties of hoists and hoisting strategies, initial miner positions, ventilation and compressed air velocities, stench warning system and self rescuer capabilities. The simulation can be carried out for cases in which there is no fire, i.e., fire drill simulation, or for cases in which there is a fire at any arbitrary location. The fire is assumed to generate gases which impede movement of miners in the gaseous region. However, the thermal effects of the fire are not considered. The simulation output include the evacuation time for each miner, movement of the hoists, propagation of smoke through the mine passages and smoke exposure of the miners. Several illustrative simulations have been carried out to verify validity of the program and to demonstrate its capabilities. The computer program has been able to predict evacuation time, within 5 percent, for an actual fire drill. It is believed that this program can be used to evaluate evacuation performance of a mine, identify problem areas and demonstrate improvements due to the recommended corrective actions.

THE absorption of oxygen by molten metals is a quick and convincing method to determine the metallurgical characteristics of various types of furnaces.1 The investigation was restricted to the use of coreless induction furnaces. A major variable in induction furnace practice is the frequency and its influence was studied by comparing melts made in a 5000-cycle and a 60-cycle induction furnace respectively.2 The authors are not aware that such a comparative study has been made before and therefore present this paper in the belief that the results will be of general interest. ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR DETERMINATION OF OXYGEN IN NICKEL An analytical procedure for determining NiO by a quick and simple, laboratory method has been worked out in collaboration with Dr. Herty, of the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines. It was found that Dr. Herty's aluminum method as used for the. determination of FeO in iron and steel was very suitable for use with nickel if instead of hydrochloric acid a 10 per cent solution of nitric acid is used for bringing the metal into solution. Essentially this method involves deoxidizing the nickel-oxygen alloy with aluminum (2Al + 3NiO = Al203 + 3Ni) and determining the resulting Al203 by a residue analysis. The original oxygen content can then be calculated from the amount of Al-20,. The method as suggested by Dr. Herty3 is referred to in the present paper as method B. A slight modification of method Bled to the application of method A, a description of which is given below according to F. W. Beiter?:3

Granules are used primarily as roofing material. From the earliest times, man has been faced with the basic problem of providing protection for himself, his family, and his property against the ravages of the weather. Basically, this problem is no different today than in the past, except that today the trend is to demand shelter which is also colorful and distinctive. There has been a gradual evolution from the thatched roof to the modem ranchstyle home. In his search for a more permanent and more attractive roof, the home owner has utilized many mineral materials. All granules, whether slate or colored granules, are referred to by the asphalt roofing industry as "Slate Granules." Early Roofing Materials The development of mineral roofing in the United States followed two trends: first, the slate industry, and second, the bituminous products. The early colonists were familiar with slab slate construction from Europe and it was natural for them to continue with this type of roofing. As early as 1780, the forerunners of the present bituminous products were finding favor. Those early products consisted of saturating burlap or similar material with crude tar or pitch. This type of roofing was soon improved by dusting a variety of materials on the surface of the roofing to prevent adhesion while in rolls. Such factors as fire resistance and protection from the actinic rays of the sun soon followed. This started the general pattern which is still followed today, that is, saturating felt materials and supplying a uniform grade of crushed mineral to the surface. In commercial and public buildings, metal roofs found early favor. The attractive green color of verdigris-coated copper became a symbol of churches and institutions of learning. Aluminum roofing has become economical for large structures and is finding limited popularity in rural areas. Tile, asbestos, and cement materials, being weather resistant, found early acclaim and are still popular. Today, by far the most widely used roofing materials in the United States are asphalt products. Two important characteristics-economy and weatherability-account for their popularity. Influence of Building Trends on Roofing The postwar building boom in 1947 had many attractive features for the American people. The ranch-style one story type of home seemed well suited for suburban developments which sprang up in such profusion. As the roof in modern home construction is one of the most conspicuous aspects of its architecture, the home owner could now express his tastes not only in paint and landscaping, but could also select an attractive and harmonious roof color. Variety of Minerals Used Many naturally occurring minerals are used today in the roofing industry. In the iron-cobalt system there are several property-composition relationships of theoretical importance. The alloys are ferromagnetic exhibiting a maximum saturation at approximately 33 at. pct cobalt;' the interatomic distances at room temperature show large positive deviations from Vegard's rule;2 and in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt there is an order-disorder transition2 which has a large effect on other properties. The thermal expansion data for the system have been reported only from room temperature to 100 C and for this temperature range a minimum in coefticient in the rcgion of 50 at. pct cobalt is well established.3,4,6 This paper reports the expansion properties in the iron-cobalt system for temperatures from 30 to 850°C, shows the correlation with other physical properties, and proposes an explanation for the tcrrelation. Experimental Procedure The thermal expansivities of iron-cobalt alloys in 10 pct steps in composition were determined from 30 to about 850°C. The major series of alloys was prepared by induction melting from Armco iron and cobalt rondelles with the addition of about 0.6 wt pct manganese. This series was supplemented by three compositions: high purity electrolytic iron, high purity electrolytic cobalt, and an alloy of 52.1 wt pct cobalt prepared from the high purity electrolytic iron and electrolytic cobalt by vacuum-melting. The compositions of both series of alloys are given in Table I. The specimens for measurement were prepared from the cast ingots by first hot-swaging followed in most instances by cold-swaging to 0.180-in. diam rod. Some alloys in the region of 5c pct cobalt, because of inherent cold-brittleness, were swaged hot to the final diameter. The expansion specimens were approximately 2 1/2 in. long with flat-ground and polished ends. Before measurement they were annealed in hydrogen for I hr at 900°C. In the apparatus used for the thermal expansivity measurements (Fig I), a modification of that designed by Hidnert and Sweeney,? the differential expausion between the specimen and vitreous silica was measured by a dial micrometer reading to 0.001 mm. An invar fixture supported the dial gauge, and this fixture, in turn, was connected to a split invar collar which supported the outer silica tube. A pyrex "T" was placed over the outcr silica tube and was sealed to the invar collar by Apiezon Q sealing compound. A movable hollow vitreous silica rod which rested on top of the test specimen slid through a flexible rubber diaphragm cemented to the top of the pyrex "T." ALTHOUGH nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal briquetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the worlds largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis. water-front and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned. GENERAL HISTORY In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. The Chief Consolidated properties are situated in the Tintic mining district of Utah, being included in Juab and Utah Counties, about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City. The drilling referred to in this paper has been carried on in the Chief Consolidated No. Pmine, the Gemini mine, and the Eureka Hill mine at Eureka, the Grand Central mine, above Mammoth, and the Apex Standard mine just south of Dividend. The occurrence of ore through the district is typically in lenses on bedding or breaks, and in connecting pipes, without accurate geometrical trend so that the ratio between the total length of development in drifts and crosscuts to the square feet of ore exposed is very high. A section of one of the western channels (Fig. 1) through the Tintic district, shows, roughly, the irregularities calling for excessive development work, so typical of the Tintic mines. This irregular trend of the ore constantly calls for excessive cutting up of the whole area for offshoots and the connecting links always present. In the planning of prospecting and development, no regular system may be laid out without overlooking some orebodies or segments of orebodies. It was with these facts in mind that Cecil Fitch, the general manager of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., decided that some method of drilling was the more feasible way of successfully cutting up and bringing about the discovery of ore believed to exist; yet this drilling had to compete with a great margin of cost over crosscutting, as a crosscut in the Tintic district, even though barren, brings out geologic facts that, in many cases, are worth the price of the working itself. Diamond drills met with the success that might be expected in a district that has a reputation for the Gear and loss of diamonds; after 6 or 8 months, this method was discarded on account of the high costs. Simultaneously, a small churn drill outfit was set up underground but a few shifts proved its inapplicability. At the same time, the ordinary hammer drill was used to drive prospect holes with jointed steel. The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation system is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside; it must move men in and out of the mine; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Face Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. During the heating of cold-worked nickel silver, the tendcncy of the material to crack is well known. The present research deals with this question, and may conveniently be divided into the following sections: Changes in these alloys during heating and cooling, determination of the temperature at which cracking occurs, effect of grain size, quenching cracks, methods of overcoming annealing cracking. The work is far from complete, in particular the influence of impurities on this tendency has not been investigated, but the results so far obtained lead to certain definite conclusions, which are of theoretical and practical importance. Changes in Alloys During Heating and Cooling During the annealing of many metals at a temperature just below that at which recrystallization sets in, there is evidence of some change, the effect of which is to harden and embrittle the material. This effect has been most clearly demonstrated in the cases of aluminum, copper, brass, and nickel silver, and appears to be a common property of cold-worked metals and alloys, or, at any rate, the non-ferrous ones. The effect would obviously offer an explanation for certain types of annealing cracking, but the trouble is so much more common in the nickel silvers than in the other alloys that some special cause should be looked for. There is, however, fairly good reason for believing that similar cracking may occur in some of the brasses; D. Bunting1 suggests that the a brasses toward the saturation limit are subject to a transformation closely allied in nature to that known to occur in the nickel silvers at around 320" C. Although the existence of this critical temperature range was known, it did not necessarily follow that this transformation was responsible for the trouble under investigation, so the first portion of this paper deals with the attempts made to determine whether other critical changes might not occur in these alloys. IT is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process, of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain,2-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solu-tion austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Parnop and Sachs, and others'-1 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decom-position by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect-the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.' THE presence in the Tennessee Valley of extensive deposits of olivine, a silicate of magnesium and iron that contains approximately 28 per cent magnesium, has been recognized since 1896 when Lewis8 published a survey of basic magnesium rocks of western North Carolina. A recent field survey by T.V.A 7 showed that more than two hundred million tons of high-grade olivine occurs above local drainage levels in western North Carolina and northern Georgia. Except for sporadic attempts to work the olivine for its nickel and chromium contents,10 the ore received little attention industrially until 1926 when Goldschmidt3 suggested its use in the manufacture of refractories. Only one instance is recorded of an attempt to utilize the ore commercially for its magnesium content;" in this case a process was used in which olivine was treated with sulphuric acid, the resultant mixture was leached with water, and the leach solution was purified and evaporated to form epsom salts, which was the end product. As a part of its program of contributing to the development of the natural resources of the region, the Tennessee Valley Authority became interested in the olivine deposits as a source of metallic magnesium because of their high magnesium content and proximity to hydroelectric power. Studies were undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing magnesium chloride by extraction of olivine. The experimental work was carried out successively at the T.V.A. Minerals Testing Laboratory, Norris, Tenn., at the Georgia State Engineering Station,* Atlanta, Ga., and at the T.V.A. laboratory at Wilson Dam, Ala. The present paper describes a process, developed through the pilot-plant stage, whereby magnesium chloride suitable for reduction to metallic magnesium can be prepared from olivine by extraction with hydrochloric acid and subsequent purification. Research on the magnesium-from-olivine process, originally intended for peacetime use, was given impetus by the shortage of magnesium that existed at the beginning of the current world war. By the time the process was sufficiently developed to justify a proposal for its inclusion in the war program, the shortage had been met by expansion and development of other processes. However, it is believed that the magnesium-from-olivine process may have advantages that will warrant consideration of its use after the war, when the economics of the various processes rather than production on a wartime scale will be the criterion for commercial production of magnesium. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Because of this limited success, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. As a result of these calculations, it was concluded that autoradiograPhy is a rather insensitive technique to measure grain boundary segregation. The range (energies) of the emitted particles (ß and a) must be low, and the concentration of the radioactive speczes at the grain boundary must be (in general) two or three orders of magnitude greater than the concentration within the grain. Because of these very restricted conditions , the limited success of the technzque is not surprising. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Sulfur segregation in iron1 and possibly polonium segregation in Pb-5 pct B1 2 alloys are the only autoradi-ography experiments that have demonstrated segregation to grain boundaries in metals without the formation of a second phase. Segregation to a boundary without the formation of a second phase is often called Gibbs' absorption and is discussed by McLean in Chapter 5 of Ref. 10. There are several394 experiments showing grain boundary diffusion of a radioisotope, but this type experiment is not representative of equilibrium between the concentration of an element at a grain boundary and that in bulk, so it will not be discussed in this paper. In an attempt to determine if temper embrittle ment of low-alloy steels was associated with segregation of antimony to grain boundaries, a program to use auto-radiography (using Sb-125) was initiated. Even though other measurements strongly suggest that segregation is occurring during embrittlement, no evidence of grain boundary segregation was observed in the auto-radiography experiments. An attempt was also made to detect segregation of carbon (using C-14) to grain boundaries in iron during slow cooling. There is again strong indirect evidence7 that segregation occurs during such a treatment, but the autoradiography experiment gave no evidence of such segregation. Because of the failure of these experiments and the general lack of success by our metallographic unit in measuring grain boundary segregation using autoradi-ography, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. MODEL SYSTEM The model system is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It is a semi-infinite bicrystal with a single grain boundary perpendicular to the top face. The width of the grain boundary, W, is defined as the region to which segregation has occurred and it is assumed that this region is of constant composition. The assumption of an infinite dimension is for mathematical reasons but the results of such an analysis (as will be demonstrated later) are valid for even very small specimens. It also is assumed that the measurement is not limited by means of detecting the radiation (photographic emulsions, counters, and so forth) but that the means of detecting radiation is linearly sensitive to the radiation and has infinite resolving power. The distance y is the perpendicular distance from the center of the grain boundary to the point at which the background radiation is measured and x is the integration variable. CALCULATION FOR BETA PARTICLES Two values of the intensity of radiation will be calculated, the intensity at the center of the grain boundary and the intensity far from the grain boundary. The radiation at the center of the grain boundary can be calculated in the following way. Assume a grain boundary of width W having a uniform concentration equal to Cgb + Cb where CGb is the excess concentration of the element under consideration at the grain boundary and Cb is the bulk concentration. The intensity of radiation, IgB, at the center of the grain boundary, is a consequence of the amount of radioactive material, decay rate, absorption, and geometrical factors which can be represented mathematically by the following expression:

A GREAT deal of work has been done on the rolling of single crystals of iron. Barrett and evensoon studied end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals and found that some crystals maintained a sharp single orientation during rolling. Others rotated into two or more orientations, and some fragmented and approached the entire polycrystalline texture depending on the original orientation of both the normal and rolling directions. Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl2 studied iron-silicon alloys and found that the addition of silicon to the iron had little effect on heavily rolled polycrystalline material. Dunn3 has extensively studied the cold-rolling and recrystallization of silicon-iron single crystals. Dunn found that for single crystals having initial orientation between (110) [001] and (111) [112], the principalcomponent of the cold-rolled texture is (111) [112]. Koh and Dunn4 studied the cold-rolled textures of single crystals having initial orientations in the range (001) [110] to (111) [IT01 and found that these are stable end orientations. They also found that all orientations having a [110] direction parallel to the transverse direction rotate to either the (001) [110] or the (111) [112] stable end orientation except for orientations near (112) [11], which divide and produce a final texture consisting of (001) [110]and (111) [112] components. Crystals having a (111) <112>-type texture re-crystallized to a (120) [001] or (110) [001]-type texture. Crystals having orientations with a range of (001) to (335) in the rolling plane and [110] in the rolling direction recrystallized5 to a wide spread of the initial orientations resulting from a multiplicity of 30-deg rotations about several (110) poles. The present study was undertaken to relate other orientations of crystals of silicon-iron to their cold-rolling and recrystallization textures, so that one might rationalize polycrystalline recrystallization data on the basis of the known deformation texture and the behavior of single crystals in these orientations. PROCEDURE Samples were obtained from a cylindrical ingot of 3 pct silicon iron prepared as follows: Armco iron was melted with high-purity silicon flakes under an atmosphere of argon to minimize oxidation. The alloy was poured into a special mold to form an ingot which consisted partially of large columnar crystals. Plates were cut from the columnar portions of the ingot with the longitudinal direction parallel to the columnar axes and ground to 0.040 in. thick. The plates were heavily etched to a thickness of 0.032 in. to remove the cold-worked surface. Orientations of seventeen crystals were determined by Laue back-reflection techniques keeping the mean columnar axis as the reference direction. The plate was then cut in two, parallel to the columnar axis. One portion of the plate was rolled at room temperature parallel to the columnar axis to a reduction in thickness of 84 pct. The remaining portion of the plate was rolled also at room temperature across the columnar axis to a reduction of 66 pct, at which point the crystals began to separate at the boundaries. After rolling, nine individual crystals were removed from the strip by cutting along the crystal boundaries with a jeweler&apos;s saw. Fig. 1 shows the original orientations of the six crystals that were straight-rolled and of the three crystals (4, 7, and 8) that were cross-rolled. Each rolled crystal was carefully etched to approximately 0.002 in. thick. Textures of the cold-rolled crystals were determined by use of the diffractometer with a non-integrating sample holder. The pole figures were made for the (200) poles using molybdenum Ka radiation and were plotted by an automatic stereographic projection recorder.&apos; Spurious poles were determined by rerunning portions of the pole figures using strontium oxide to filter out the Ka radiation. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise six classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6, Rocky Mountain Members. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whose residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years&apos; employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members. SEC. 3. Honorary Members: Each candidate for Honorary Membership must be recommended by at least ten Members and must be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Board of Directors by the unanimous vote of the Directors present; provided, however, that the number of Honorary Members shall at no time exceed twenty. Such election shall automatically act as a transfer of such member from any other class of membership to which he may belong. SEC. 4. Senior Members: The Directors may in their discretion place on the Honor Roll of Senior Members and transfer from any other class of membership other than Honorary Membership the name of any Member or Associate who has reached the age of seventy years and who has paid dues for thirty years, and for good reasons in • special cases may vary the age or number of years. SEC. 5. Junior Members: A person to be eligible for election to the class of Junior Member must be qualified through education or experience to hold a subordinate position in engineering, mining, metallurgical, geological or chemical work. He shall be not more than twenty-seven years of age at the time of election. The rights of the present Junior Associates shall continue until the same expire by limitation of time. SEC. 6. Associates: A person eligible for election or transfer into the class of Associate shall be one, who, in the opinion of the Committee on Admissions and the Board of Directors, is suitable for such election or transfer by reason of his interest in or connection with mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry. SEC. 7. Rocky Mountain Members: Membership in a special class of life memberships without annual or other dues and without right to receive the printed literature distributed to other members or the right and privilege of wearing the official badge of technical members, is given to all members of the Rocky Mountain Club at the time of consolidation. Growth directions of tin, zinc, and cadmiun whisker crystals grown spontaneously fi-om the solid are summarized. In tin the edge and diagonal directions of the unit cell are jound with the exception oj- the [110] diagonal. In cadmiurn and zinc the usual dip-ections are a or a + c. The c direction has not been ohserwed. The gvouth directions from the solid are for the most part the same as those found for vapor-grozun crystals and are the ohserz:ed glide directions in plastic j-lou. Whisker crystals of these elements grown from the solid are not twinned. Specular lateral reflections are associated with planes of snall crystallographic indices. WHISKER crystals of tin, zinc, or cadmium grow spontaneously at room temperature in periods from months to years from thin electroplates and other prepared films of the respective metals.&apos;&apos;2 It has been established that these crystals are single, but the question of twinning, such as occurs in whisker crystals of silicon,3&apos;4 has not been resolved. Studies of morphology have been restricted to determinations of growth directions.5-&apos; Whisker crystals are both straight and kinked. A few studies have been made on kinked whiskers including measurements of kink anglesa and determinations of growth directions,&apos; but unfortunately not both on the same crystals. The kink angles, for the most part, for each species are grouped closely about a few unique values, but these values are not always those between observed growth directions in a single crystal. To supplement existing data, the growth directions, identification of lateral features, and presence or absence of twinning were determined with a Weissenberg goniometer by a method described elsewhereg on eight whisker crystals of tin, five of zinc, and five of cadmium. One kinked cadmium whisker was examined in detail. The specimens were needlelike, a few microns in cross section, and of the order of a millimeter in length. They were removed from electroplated substrates on laboratory specimens and commercial equipment after several years of growth as described in Table I. Since the specimens were less than 10 p in cross section they were ideally strong with no attendant risk of plastic deformation or damage in handling. Only deformation twinning has been reported for these elements. Therefore, twinning probably should not be expected in whisker crystals of these metals, particularly a twin plane containing the growth direction. A twin plane oriented in this direction was the one sought in this study. No examination was made for twinning at the boundary between kink segments except for one cadmium crystal. Well-defined reflections occur as a whisker crystal of tin, zinc, or cadmium is rotated about its growth direction when illuminated by a beam of light Although these reflections had been noted in earlier investigations, no study of them was made, probably because the earlier studies had disclosed also that

THE decision of the Supreme Court of the United States not to review the findings of the lower courts closes an interesting chapter in the mining litigation that has arisen as a result of the extralateral feature of the mining law. The time seems opportune to record some of the important geological features, and also some of the legal features, of the controversy, in the hope that these will be permanently accessible to members of the mining profession. After many rumors of litigation, the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. sued its neighbor for the ore that had been, it was alleged, wrongfully extracted from its so-called Yampa limestone lode. This ore lay beneath Utah-Apex surface and was claimed by virtue of the extralateral rights conferred on the Utah Consolidated Co. through the ownership of certain specific mining claims, one of the principal claims being the Yampa. Previous to bringing suit, the Utah Consolidated Co. had strengthened its position by purchasing the Old Yampa mine and by making an agreement with the Utah Metal & Tunnel Co., which gave it clearer title to the outcrop of the Highland Boy limestone. Access to the workings of the Utah-Apex Co. was secured and reciprocal privileges gave Utah-Apex representatives the right to enter the properties of the Utah Consolidated Co. This resulted in the Utah-Apex immediately bringing countersuit for ore alleged to have been wrongfully extracted from under its surface in the Leadville country, see Fig. 4. Six cases came up for consideration: five related to the original suit and the countersuit, and one related to the Dana extralateral claims of the Utah-Apex Co.

Since the introduction of the relative permeability concept in the middle thirties1,2 various investigators have shown3,10,11,12,15 how the basic equations for the flow of oil and gas through porous media can he utilized to compute the recovery from depletion type or solution gas drive type reservoirs under certain conditions, when the necessary physical data pertaining to the reservoir rock and its reservoir fluids are known. In the study by Muskat and Taylor" in 1945, the effects of viscosity, gas solubility, shrinkage, and the permeability-saturation characteristics of the producing formation on the production histories and the recovery of gas drive reservoirs were analyzed. Each parameter was varied a limited number of times, while keeping the others constant. The work was not carried to the point where the data could be used directly to estimate the primary recovery in those cases where certain rock and fluid characteristics were known or could be assumed. Since the publication of this classic study, the work by Beal in 194616 and Standing in 1952&apos;" has established general correlations of oil viscosity and shrinkage with gas solubility and oil gravity. In addition. a considerable number of relative permeability relationships for different types of reservoir rocks has been published2,5,13,17,19,20. Also, the burden of the numerical work required in the solutions of the differential equation has. during the last few years, been greatly reduced with the availability of modern electronic computing facilities. The purpose of this paper is therefore to present the results of a large number of such recovery computations covering the normal range of variation of the main parameters such as the type of rock, the API gravity of the oil, and the amount of gas in solution. As is to be expected, the ultimate recovery is found to increase with the oil gravity. except for the higher solution gas-oil ratios. Within the normal range of solubilities, the ultimate recovery generally appears to decrease with the amount of gas in solution for the higher oil gravities, and to show a slight increase for the lower oil gravities. Intermediate oil gravities seem to fall between the two trends. The type of reservoir rock, as identified by its relative permeability relationship, appears to have a very pronounced effect on the ultimate recovery. In general, sands and sandstones show higher recoveries than limestones and dolomites, although certain intergranular limestones seem to show a higher theoretical recovery than unconsolidated sand. The recovery from sands and sandstones generally decreases with increasing cementation and consolidation, while the recoveries from limestones and dolomites are highest for the intergranular type and lowest for the fracture type porosity.

Log washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate completely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5" to 10" and into which the material is fed. THE manufacture of charcoal in kilns was declared many years ago, after a series of experiments made in poorly constructed furnaces, to be unprofitable, and the subject is dismissed by most writers with the remark that in order to use the method economically the products of distillation, both liquid and gaseous, must be collected. It is asserted with truth that the number of kilns required for a large production of iron would be so great that it is doubtful whether any works would be justified in making the necessary outlay for their construction, but it can also be asserted with equal truth that for any such production in a given locality the use of charcoal as fuel would be equally unjustifiable. It appears to have been forgotten that there were other manufactures besides iron in which large amounts of charcoal were used, but these consumers seem to have been guided entirely by the results of the experiments of the iron men, who necessarily made the largest quantity of it. Some authors speak in a doubtful way of the quality of the charcoal produced, and a few concede that with great care good charcoal can be made in kilns, but that most of the workmen do not like kiln charcoal. This is the real secret of the opposition to this method of manufacture. Most of these objections were written when charcoal was the most important fuel used by the iron manufacturer, and when what was a large production of iron for several furnaces was less than that produced by a single modern one, in localities where other fuels can be had. Almost all that has been written on the subject related to the use of the fuel for the manufacture of iron in the blast furnace, where very peculiar properties are required, and where the quantity produced is limited by the height of the furnace, and this in turn by the crushing resistance of the charcoal. A large production was, therefore, only possible when the best and hardest woods were used. Of all these objections there is not a single one which is not equally applicable to any method of charcoal manufacture, whether it be meilers, pits, or furnaces.
