THIS paper presents geophysical and subsurface data observed in the vicinity of Shafts No. 1 and and 5 of the National Lead Co. lead mines at Fred-ericktown, Madison County, Missouri, see Fig. 1. The area selected is an excellent example to illustrate the close correlation between geophysical data and geological facts as revealed by drilling and mining. Such close correlations make geophysical applications appropriate to the development of known ore-bodies as well as the exploration for new orebodies. In the past, magnetic and shallow electrical resistivity observations were made over limited areas in the Fredericktown lead district by the Missouri Geological Survey, with favorable results. The first extensive magnetic and electrical resistivity surveys were started by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in May 1945 in two areas located northwest and southwest of Fredericktown, as shown in Fig. 1. The results of these surveys were reported in April 1948 at Denver, spontaneous-polarization surveys were made over the property of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Co. at Fredericktown by Sherwin F. Kelly Geophysical Services, Inc. Aeromagnetic surveys were completed in 1948 over the Fredericktown quadrangle by the U. S. Geological Survey. Since 1945 geophysical surveys have been an important part of exploration programs in the Fred- ericktown district. Such methods, magnetic and electrical resistivity, are now serving as guides in the further development of known orebodies. On an irregular pre-Cambrian igneous erosion surface Lamotte sandstone of upper Cambrian age was deposited, partially filling the topographic basins, see Fig. 2. Above and conformable with the Lamotte sandstone lies the Bonneterre formation, a dolomite with locally interbedded thin dolomitic limestones and shales at its base. This formation also only partially filled the topographic basins. The Bonneterre was overlain by the Davis, Derby, Doe Run, and Potosi formations, which are principally dolomite. Uplift, tilt, and slight warping has allowed erosion and weathering to remove most of the sediments overlying the Bonneterre, and in many places, not far from the mine, the Lamotte sandstone is exposed. This erosion has also exposed areas of pre-Cambrian igneous rock. The Lamotte sandstone, having been deposited on an irregular pre-Cambrian surface, is extremely variable in thickness and ranges from zero where it laps the pre-Cambrian rocks to 250 ft thick in the deeper basins. In the vicinity of the mines the Bonneterre dolomite ranges from zero where it wedges out against the pre-Cambrian igneous rocks to 400 ft thick. The ore deposits occur as a bedded disseminated type1 and are chiefly composed of galena and pyrite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite and siegenite. Heavy pyrite and marcasite mineralization may be found throughout the Bonneterre formation. The year 1934 saw a very thorough and intensive search for oil in Italy, both by the Government-subsidized company, the A.G.I.P., and by the few smaller operating companies. Approximately two-thirds of the exploration work, however, has been done in the Province of Emilia (northern Italy). The A.G.I.P. has been particularly active in the Emilia district and has sunk several rotary holes between Voghera and Ferrara on structures located by geophysical means in the Po Valley. Only insignificant amounts of oil have shown up in these tests to date but gas has been found in fair quantities, and apparently the company is not yet prepared to abandon its search in this part of the country without further effort. In Central Italy, the same company has put down four tests with cable tools and of these two were "dry holes" and the other two found only traces of oil. The A:G.I.P. also sank two wells in southern Italy and it is believed that in these the indications were sufficiently encouraging for the exploration work to be continued. No serious drilling has yet been done in Sicily by the A.G.I.P. or any other company. The annual subsidy granted to the A.G.I.P. by the Government for the duration of its five-year plan has been considerably reduced for 1935 and this may interfere with the completion of the coming year's program in all its details. The Società Petrolifera Italians, which is the chief producing company in the country, has continued the development of its two fields, Salsomaggiore and Vallezza, and at the same time has intensified its program of exploration. Rotary machinery has been introduced and is undergoing a thorough trial, and prospects of finding new pools at greater depths are considered good. The charcoal adsorption plant at Vallezza has operated satisfactorily throughout the year and has produced nearly 3000 bbl. of high-grade gasoline. Besides the exploration well at Rile dell'Olio, which is still drilling, another wildcat test has been started at Torre-di-Traversetolo. All operations of this company are confined to the district of Emilia. The Società Petroli d'Italia has continued to operate the old fields of Montechino, Gratera and Velleja, and has a well now exploring at greater depths in that general area. Ti6NileSi7)G is known to be cubic, with 116 atoms in the unit cell. In the present work four new G sili-cides were found with other transition elements and five G germanides. The titanium-group elements are very efficient in forming G phases. The vanadium -group elements are somewhat less efficient, and the chromium-group elements do not form any. Cobalt can replace nickel in most cases, but it is somewhat less efficient. Iron was not found to form any G phases. Germanium is somewhat less efficient than silicon. The (TiNiSi)E phase has been previously identified by Westbrook. However, its crystal structure has not been determined. In the present work the E phase was found to have an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a. = 7.02, bo = 5.18, co = 11.11A. A large number of other E phases were found at the same stoicheometric ratio in ternary systems of silicon and germanium with transition elements. Lattice parameters similar to those for TiNiSi were measured. The number of atoms per unit cell is estimated at 30 to 36. The vanadium-group elements are somewhat more efficient in forming the E phase than the titanium-group elements. Chromium-group elements were not found to form any E phases. Cobalt is somewhat less efficient than nickel, and iron is less efficient than cobalt. Germanium is not as efficient as silicon. ThE ternary silicide designated as G-phase was first identified by Beattie and versnyder1 and by Beattie and Hagel2 at the approximate composition TiNi2Si. Westbrook et al.' gave the composition as Ti2Ni7Sis. This phase was found to be fcc with a. = 11.201A and 116 atoms per unit cell. Beattie4 and more recently independently Hladishevskii, Kripyakevich, Kuzma, and Teslyuk5 were able to show that this structure is isotypic with MgeSi7CuLe and Th6Mn23. The latter structures had been determined by Florio, Rundle, and snow,' Nagorsen and Witte,7 and Bergman and Waugh.8 According to the crystal structure, Ti8Ni6Si7 may be considered as the ideal composition. The Russian investigators5 identified six additional ternary phases isotypic with Ti6Ni6Si7, in which titanium is replaced by Mn, V, Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, and one, namely MneNil6Ge7, in which germanium replaces silicon. They also found that Cr6Ni6Si7, which does not occur as a ternary phase, can be stabilized by replacing 1 at. pct of the Cr by V, Mn, or Ta. Another ternary silicide was found by Westbrook et al.3 at the composition TiNiSi, and it was designated by them as the E phase. The crystal structure of this phase has not been deter-

INTRODUCTION It is my intention in this paper to deal with gold, uranium, diamonds, platinum, manganese, chrome, vanadium and heavy mineral sands. These are the most important strategic minerals produced by the Republic of South Africa which are not covered in other sessions of this program. In each case I have high- lighted the statistics and peculiar advantages which combine to make South Africa a vital source of these minerals. Before proceeding to give individual attention to these minerals I believe it would be useful to define what I mean by 'strategic'. The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines strategic in the context of materials as 'essential for war'. However it is commonly used in a much broader sense than this (often, in fact, very loosely) and I prefer to define it as 'concerned with the acquisition and maintenance of power, whether economic, political or military.' A VITAL SOURCE In dealing with the individual minerals I have quoted statistics which are contained in Tables 1, 2 and 3. Table 1 clearly shows the absolute size of the South African mineral industry. However, it can also be used to demonstrate the importance of the industry to the South African economy if compared with the GNP in 1980 of about R60 billion. Table 4 illustrates clearly how important South Africa is as a supplier of these minerals to most of the important industrialized countries of the Western World. Gold If anyone had any doubts about the inclusion of gold in a list of strategic minerals I am sure that the above definition of 'strategic' will convince them that it certainly belongs there. Similarly no one is likely to have any doubt about the fact that South Africa is a vital source of supply. Tables 2 and 3 show that in 1980 we had 51% of the world's reserves and accounted for 55% of world production. The figures for the Western World are considerably higher. The only other major producer, of course, is Russia, with small but significant production in the Pacific Rim area coming from Australia, Canada, Latin America, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and the U.S. All South African mine gold production is shipped in bullion form containing about 88% gold and 9% silver to the Rand Refinery which is a modern refinery with large scale units capable of refining half a ton of bullion at a time. The Refinery is equipped to produce standard 'good delivery' gold as well as 9999 gold and 999 silver. The Refinery also produces the 22 karat blanks which are, used by the South African Mint to produce Kruger Rands. It goes without saying that the South African gold mining industry leads the world in all aspects of deep-level, narrow-reef mining technology. The industry's metallurgists, too, have a record of tenacious and continuing efforts to improve extraction to the level of the present finely honed efficient process used on all the modern mines. Uranium In 1980 South Africa had 14% of the uranium reserves of the Western World and accounted for 14% of production. In view of the paucity of data I am not in a position to estimate figures for the total world. All the other major sources of uranium in the Western World are situated around the Pacific Rim, with the U.S. and Canada already being major suppliers and accounting for 38% and 17% of Western World production in 1980. Australian production at the time was small but they have very large reserves and production is already rising rapidly. The U.S., Canada and Australia account respectively for 22%, 19% and 29% of the uranium reserves of the Western World. South Africa has been a major producer continuously for 30 years. Nearly all the uranium produced, amounting to about 115 000 tons up to the end of 1981, was a by-product or co-product of gold extraction. During that time the industry has frequently led the world in technological innovation, and has established a reputation as a reliable producer of a consistent, high-grade product. In the latter respect, it is helped by the fact that production is marketed by one company, Nuclear Fuels Corporation, which also blends, dries and calcines the product from the individual mines and samples and assays it before shipping. Diamonds Diamonds are the rock on which the South African mineral industry is founded. The discovery of diamonds in 1866 gave rise to the first major mineral industry in the country and the profits from diamond mining helped to finance the gold mining industry 20 years later. Although now overshadowed by gold, diamonds are still very important in the overall picture of mineral production and exports, as can be seen in Table 1. There are really three separate diamond markets - gem, natural industrial, and synthetic - and, to be meaningful, statistics should be provided separately. Unfortunately separate figures are not available. The figures in Tables 2 and 3 show that, for gem and natural industrial together, South Africa ranks third in the world in production and second in reserves. In the systems Ti-Mn-O, Ti-Fe-O, Ti-Co-O, and Ti-Ni-O the bounda.r-ies of the Ti2Ni-type phases were determined at one or more temperatures and the variation of the lattice parameter with oxygen content was determined. Densities were calculated from the lattice parameters and compared with measured density values. The: results indicate that the occurrence of the phase in these systesms can be correlated qualitatively with valency electron concentration, and that the role of oxygen is that of an electron acceptor. The lower limit of oxygen solubility appears to be determined by the valencies of Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni, while the maximum oxygen concentration coincides with the filling of the 16 (c) positions of the O 7h - Fd 3m space group. THE suggestion has been made by several investigators'" that the phases having the cubic E9,-type structure, and known as 17-carbide-type, double-carbide-type and Ti,Ni-type, are members of a family of electron compounds. This concept has been given additional support by recent work8 in which new isostructural phases involving second and third long period combinations were found, and which provided further evidence of the regularity of occurrence of the phase in terms of periodic table relationships. In this laboratory attention has been focused on the isomorphs containing titanium, zirconium, or hafnium, and the role that oxygen plays in their occurrence. In some binary systems Ti,Nitype* phases occur having the formula A,B where A is the titanium group element. Based on previous workq and the present investigation, oxygen is known to be soluble in two of these binary phases, Ti,Co and Ti2Ni. It is probable that oxygen is also soluble in the other phases of this kind. In other binary systems the Ti,Ni-type phase does not occur, but does occur in the corresponding ternary systems with oxygen .3-5 The experiments described here were performed to determine whether the occurrence and composition of certain of the Ti,Ni-type phases could be related to an electronic effect and whether oxygen's stabilizing role is exerted through an influence on the electron: atom ratio. The ternary systems Ti-Mn-O, Ti-Fe-O, n-Co-O, and Ti-Ni-O were selected for study for two reasons: First, several schemes have been proposed for first long period elements which, although not in quantitative agreement, show a generally consistent trend for the variation of valency with atomic number. Although for a transition metal the term valency is difficult to define and is generally not a constant number which can be applied to all alloys, it is usually assumed to be an index of the number of electrons per atom involved in metallic cohesion. Second, the determination of the Ti2Ni-type phase boundaries was facilitated by the fact that the phase relations in several of these ternary systems have been investigated by other workers."' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE___________________ The alloys were prepared by arc melting crystal-bar titanium, reagent grade TiO, and electrolytic manganese, iron, cobalt, and nickel. Each button was remelted at least three times. The metals had a minimum purity of 99.9 pct except the nickel whose purity was 99.4 pct, the major impurity in this instance being cobalt. The preparation of the manganese alloys was attended by the customary difficulties associated with the vaporization of manganese. The technique used in this case was to add approximately 10 pct extra manganese to the original charge and to continue remelting the button until the final weight was in agreement with its intended weight. At least three alloys in each system were analyzed chemically and the results, even for the manganese alloys, were in good agreement with the intended compositions. A few additional alloys in the Ti-Mn-O system were prepared by the sintering of mixed powders in evacuated quartz tubes followed in some cases by arc melting. For annealing, the alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and placed in fused silica tubes containing zirconium chips. The fused silica tubes were evacuated at room temperature to a pressure of 1 x l0-6 mm of Hg and sealed. These capsules were then annealed for 72 hr at an external pressure of 5 x 10-5 mm of Hg in a vacuum furnace whose temperature could be controlled to + 1°C. The success of this procedure in avoiding significant oxygen or nitrogen pickup was indicated by the bright, ductile condition of the molybdenum foil and by the complete absence of a microscopic reaction layer on the specimens. This method did not permit rapid quenching of the specimens but in no case did metal-lographic examination indicate that a solid-state transformation had occurred on cooling. Metallo-

IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps. The area covered in this study is shown in Fig. 1 on which are indicated the relative location and approximate outlines of the principal producing camps. This also shows the approximate yield to date of each major camp in terms of combined lead and zinc concentrates. The output of zinc concentrates is roughly seven times that of lead. Hence, the economy of the district has depended primarily on the price of zinc, with lead as an important byproduct. Over much of the productive period, lead concentrates averaged about twice the value of zinc concentrates per ton, and in certain mines or areas the proportion of lead to zinc was substantially above average. The Joplin district is largely flat prairie but is partly moderately dissected, partially wooded land with a relief generally less than 100 ft. The rocks are almost flat-lying, nearly parallel to the surface, and the chief ore formation is the Mississippian Boone limestone, including its cherty phases. This formation either outcrops in the producing areas or is covered by a thin veneer of Pennsylvanian shales. Virtually all the ore occurs within 400 ft of the surface, and a large part at less than 300 ft in depth. Most of the land was divided into small farms or town lots before mineral development; tracts seldom exceeded 160 acres, and averaged considerably less. Mineral rights followed the surface ownership, segregation was rare, and a system of leasing for mineral development became well established early in the region's history, many landowners deriving small to sizable fortunes from royalties. Because of the shal-lowness of the ore and other factors, prospecting and mining was cheaper than in almost any comparable mining district in the United States. This situation, coupled with the widely divided land ownership, offered a fertile field for promoters and speculators and led to the rise of many small mining concerns. Only in its later history, under stern economic compulsion, has control tended to centralize in a few companies. Under these conditions, any important new discovery or successful development had much the effect of a gold rush or an oil boom. Every property in the area was leased quickly, promptly drilled, and, if ore was found, it was soon on the market. Many companies and individuals participated, and the average producing lease-hold probably was about 40 acres in extent. Any important field thus was attacked by anywhere from 10 to 100 or more producers. Production zoomed, eventually steadied or wavered, and ultimately subsided, leaving a desolation of tailings mountains, cave-ins, empty housing, and wreckage. The object of this paper is to depict the pattern of this process, so far as metal production is concerned, and to note the way in which it reacted to economic and political pressures. Production Charts In Fig. 2 is charted the production record, in tons of lead and zinc concentrates combined, of eight of the principal camps, which together account for approximately 99 pct of the total district production, over the years from 1870 to 1950. This period covers all but the very minor beginning of mining history. Two important camps are divided by state lines; hence, it has been necessary to combine production records for the two portions, based on estimates that may be slightly in error. Certain camps are sub-dividable into important units for which separate figures are available in whole or in part and have been charted as fractions of the major unit. The corresponding price of zinc is shown above all the charts. Three camps, Aurora, Neck City, and Galena, show a remarkably symmetrical graphic pattern, which is interpreted as the norm. The curves rise steeply to a peak, level off for an irregular interval, and then drop sharply to zero on a slope corresponding roughly to that covered by the initial rise. The three portions of these charts seem appropriately characterized by the designations of youth, maturity, and decline. On the whole, with some irregularities, the production in each of the three periods seems to be almost equal. A fourth camp, Granby, fails to conform to the normal pattern. It exhibits a very long period of reasonably uniform, stabilized production corresponding to maturity, followed by a rather precipitate decline. Its youth is hidden in the era of prehistory. This habit of steady, long-continued production at an even keel is attributable to the fact that this camp, more than any other, was controlled largely by a single principal owner at any given period over most of its history and this permitted the imposition

The fact is not.ablc though probably little known that thc Unitcd Statcls is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Govcrn-ment burcaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign goverrlnlents do issuc reports relating to rnine or smelter production of prirrlar~ metals, but none gives in scope and detail t'he information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United States were contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for thc year 1907 obtained ant1 compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-letal indust,ry. Thc Nationd Conscrvation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the morc important irietals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there been a lanlentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap inetals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses wcrc nearly as essential t,o both producers and consumers as the stat'istics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey t'o do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals. A new approach to the measurement of the size distribution of particulate structures imbedded in opaque bodies is developed. The method is based upon the assumption of a general two-parameter distribution curve, and the estimation of these two parameters from three well-known counting measurements made upon metallogvaphic sections. The total number of particles in the system is also a product of the analysis. Application of the method with the assumption of the logarithmiconorma1 disfribution function is developed in detail. A complete description of the geometry of a particulate structure requires the determination of the size distribution of particles. The problem of estimating the size distribution of particles of a particular phase in a multiphase system, or the grain-size distribution in a homogeneous system, has been approached by many investigators.'-'0 All of the solutions proposed by these investigators share the following characteristics. a) A minimum of several hundred particle sections in the microstructure must be examined, and some characteristic dimension recorded, such as area,3'5 intercept length,6"9 or diameter.1'2'4'10 b) The resulting data must undergo a series of fairly complex calculations to generate the empirical histogram which describes the size distribution in three dimensions. c) In order to manipulate the result, the histogram must be fitted to some assumed mathematical formula, using the attendant statistical procedures. d) With two notable exceptions,8,10 the particles must be spherical. The measurements and calculations involved are in general very tedious and time-consuming, with the logical result that much effort has been expended in the development of equipment which will perform these tasks automatically and semiautomati-cally.9,11-15 considerable success has been achieved in this area, but the equipment is in general expensive, and usually places stringent requirements On the quality of microstructure which can be reliably analyzed. In laboratories which do not possess such equip- ment, the analysis of geometry is usually limited to measuring total properties of the microstructures, such as volume fraction and interfacial area, because the measurements required are much simpler to make. The determination of size distributions rarely is undertaken. The development which is presented in this paper permits the estimation of size distributions of three-dimensional structures from the same simple counting measurements which are required to determine the surface area and volume fraction of the particulate structure, and one other counting measurement. The basic approach that is used is to assume a general mathematical form for the distribution, which is described by two parameters (as the normal distribution is described by assigning values to the mean and the standard deviation), and then estimate these two parameters from the results of the counting measurements. The introduction of a third counting measurement also permits the evaluation of the number of particles per unit volume, Nv.

DURING recent years the use of lithium has expanded greatly in industrial, chemical, and metallurgical fields, while at the same time modernized methods of mining and refining lithium have increased production. Technical literature includes many papers describing the geology and mineralogy of lithium deposits. Mining and beneficiating problems, however, have not been thoroughly described. Published reports have failed to emphasize that one of the chief reasons lithium minerals were not extensively mined until recently is the difficulty of beneficiation. Four lithium minerals of pegmatites and the lithium-sodium-phosphate byproduct from the brines at Searles Lake, Calif., have been sources of lithium. Among the pegmatite minerals, only spodu-mene and petaline are known to occur in deposits large enough to support large tonnage operations. Spodumene, a lithium-aluminum-silicate, is the principal lithium mineral mined in the U. S. Lithium Corp. of America, during its rapid development and growth, has successfully employed three different methods of concentration: 1) hand sorting, 2) Heavy Media separation, and 3) froth flotation. Each method, though economic in its sphere, is becoming outdated as extractive techniques improve. The most recent development has taken place at Lithium Corp.'s new operation in North Carolina, where the extractive process yields lithium compounds directly from mined rock without an intervening concentrating step. Until 1954 Lithium Corp. mined only in the southern part of the Black Hills of South Dakota, where the various types of lithium-bearing pegmatite could be used to develop untried processes of beneficiation. Concentrates from these operations are shipped to the corporation's chemical plant in St. Louis Park, Minn., where actual extraction of lithium and production of commercial compounds takes place. Nature of Deposits The geology of the southern Black Hills pegmatite deposits is admirably presented by a U. S. Geological Survey publication.' Only the factors pertinent to exploitation need be mentioned here. Lithium Corp. has been interested primarily in three deposits, the Edison, the Mateen, and the Longview-Beecher No. 2. The history of these deposits dates back to the mining boom of 1880 to 1900 in the Black Hills, when most of the deposits were prospected for tin by the ill-fated Harney Peak Tin Mining Co. The three deposits described here, however, lay idle and unwanted until Lithium Corp. opened the Edison mine in 1943 and the Mateen and Longview-Beecher No. 2 in 1951. Edison Deposit: The Edison deposit is about a mile southeast of Keystone, S. D., on the northeastern flank of the Harney Peak uplift. The deposit consists of no less than four and probably at least six separate pegmatites that coalesce in a central mass from which the individual pegmatites finger outward and downward in complexly folded schist and gneiss beds of the country rock.

P. S. ROLLER,* College Park, Md.-The author introduces the idea of a grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding, and this is stipulated to be 0.70 micron. I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author's quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should be defined as the distance between an F line and a [?] line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and [?] lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. I between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling. It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz," This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any considera¬tion would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material. For example, the cushioning effect of fines is widely accepted, while the inefficiency of a ball mill when the feed is too coarse is also well known. R. SCHUHMANN, JR.,* Cambridge, Mass.¬Contrary to Mr. Bond's stand, there is a great deal of miscellaneous experimental evidence that comminution does not stop at around 0.7 micron, nor does it cease consuming energy at that point. Comminution is in fact recognized as an important method of producing colloids.5 Mechanical comminution methods were used by von Weimarn6 to produce colloidal dispersions of a variety of solids, including the minerals chalcocite, galena, hematite, stibnite. Geological literature1-' describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of'pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. PRODUCTION statistics show that during the period of emergence from the depres¬sion the coal industry was becoming increasingly cognizant of the economic and competitive necessity for mechanizing. About 1935 many of its leaders were becoming aware also of the alarming scarcity of men properly trained to cope with the new problems of mechanization. In order to get a factual statement of this problem, a special AIME Coal Division Committee + was requested to survey the condition. Its investigation disclosed that graduates of mining schools going into coal mining numbered 16 in 1939 and 15 in 1938. With this as a background, Pittsburgh Coal Co. foresaw that a comprehensive program was necessary if it was to enlist the services of trained technical men, who were an indispensable part of a mechaniza¬tion program. The purpose of this paper is to review the program set up, to comment on the successes and failures and to outline the future course of action. SUMMER WORK An inescapable conclusion from the mechanization statistics was that the opportunities in coal mining were good. Not only was there a void in technical skill to fill from past years, but the ac¬celerating rate of mechanization indicated an increasing demand for technically trained men for the future. The remedy lay primarily in presenting facts con¬cerning the coal industry to the under¬graduate engineers before they made their professional occupational choice. Based on this idea, one of the key points in the program - was summer vacation work for the undergraduate, which, through the inducement of summer earnings, brought men into the mines to take a look at the prospects. This was more successful than statistics indicate because the war badly scrambled the orderly working of the program, but it could not obscure the value of a summer work program. A decided advantage was that it gave the company a preview of the graduate. An observation on this part of the program is that it is extremely hard to gauge lower classmen, and we found it wise to give them the benefit of the doubt, as the last two years in college bring about surprisingly rapid develop¬ment in some men. INTRODUCTION Forecasting commodity markets is like predicting winners in a horse race: to get the answers right, one needs both luck and judgement. Commodity analysts bear some resemblance to racing tipsters as they try to convince interested parties that they have an inside track on which metal is going to win the great minerals race of the 1990s. Commodity analysts share some features with the gentlemen of the turf: • They influence other people in how to spend risk capital, • They don't put their own money at risk, and • If their tips consistently fail to deliver, then they end up looking elsewhere for employment. In order to find winners we need to know about the kind of race we are in and the strengths and weaknesses of all the runners. Miners are not interested in a five furlong sprint: their race is a long distance affair -- after all, the lead-times between discovery and start-up generally approach a decade for mines that will provide the staying power which leaders require in this industry. We need to look at the environment in which our commodities will be competing: in racing parlance, the going. Our equivalent is the economic background: just as some horses are at a relative advantage when the going is soft, so some commodities will do better than others if economic growth is sluggish. If we are going to pick the winners for the late 1990s, and as an industry, make the right investment decisions, nothing is more important than being able to forecast (with at least a semblance of accuracy) how and where the world's economy is going to develop in the next decade. In addressing the question of whether minerals are going to be leaders in the 1990s, this paper considers the idea that it will increasingly be the world outside the industrialised OECD that will provide the incremental growth in demand for mineral products. Economic growth in the Developing World is fundamentally different from that in the OECD, and the pattern of demand for materials in relation to economic output is much more favourable than in the OECD. If we are to forecast the future, we need to be able to understand the past, both in the boom times of the so called Golden Sixties and in the lean years that followed them. This should help us to decide whether the future is going to be like one or other of these extremes or, on the other hand, a return to normality. Having forecast the going, we can look at individual competitors. • Which are best placed to take advantage of the economic, social and industrial trends that we can now dimly foresee? • Which can resist the continued onslaught of the new materials and technologies? • Which of them will best weather the economic storms (assuming that recessions have not yet been abolished)? If we can provide answers to these questions, we will be well on our way to picking winners, i.e., the metals and minerals that will reward their owners with growing demand, steady (and high) prices leading to profits beyond the dreams of avarice.

A description of a new four-point probe configuration which permits measurement of epitaxial layer resistivity is given. An analytic solution to the potential distribution due to a point current source on a multilayered structure is briefly described. Typical solutions for this probe configuration are presented. Probe spacing, layer thickness, substrate resistivity, and substrate thickness enter into the calculation. Correction factors for typical cases are given. A brief description of the construction of a probe which can achieve a small spacing of 15 is presented. The prohe is constructed so that all points are adjustable by micrometers and the probe spacing and configuration can be easily altered. Measurements of layer resistivity with the four-point probe are compared with those taken with the three-Point probe and diode-capacitance techniques. TWO techniques of obtaining profiles of N/N+ epitaxial structures are given. The reproducihility of the probe spacing and resistivity measurement is discussed. The effects upon the resistivity measurement of errors in the measurement of the lager thickness, substrate resistil)itv, and substrate thickness are presented. SINCE its introduction by valdes' in 1954, the four-point probe has been the most widely used tool for determining semiconductor resistivity. Its usefulness ranges from the evaluation of bulk semiconductor ingots to the characterization of impurity profiles in diffused structures. In general the four points, two current probes and two potential probes, are placed on one surface of the material being tested either in an in-line array or in a square array. Numerous correction factors1 8 have been worked out for these configurations which are dictated by the finite geometry of the sample being tested. One method of evaluating thin wafers has been proposed which has two probesg on each side of the wafer. Further modifications have added a fifth'' and a sixth" probe. One paper1' has discussed the accuracy of the four-point probe and the precautions necessary in its use. With the exception of the method where two points are placed on opposite sides of the wafer, the four-point probe is restricted to evaluation of wafers with a homogeneous resistivity or to the case where an isolating junction exists between the substrate and the layer (epitaxial or diffused) being evaluated. Due to the relative resistivities and thickness, the resistance of the epitaxial layer is much greater than that of the substrate, and consequently a majority of the current flows through the substrate. The potential distribution at relatively large distances from the current sources is determined by the substrate resistance, and hence the AV/I value is a measure of the substrate resistivity and not that of the epitaxial-layer resistivity. In the immediate vicinity of a current source the potential distribution is determined by the layer resistivity among other factors. Consequently, if the potential probe is placed very close to the current source, then with appropriate correction factors it is possible to determine the layer resistivity. This was the theoretical basis for using two closely spaced probes on opposite sides of an epitaxial wafer. THE committee appointed to investigate the application of oxygenated air to the blast' furnace believes, after a careful study of the problem, that this enriched air will increase hearth temperature, tonnage, flexibility of operation, and quality of pig iron made, and that fuel consumption will be decreased. These improvements are supported by theoretical evidence; but a practical trial of the process is necessary to establish more definitely the magnitude of benefits realized. The commercial application, however, may profitably be preceded by a test on a smaller scale. A small furnace will, in general, respond to the enriched air in the same way as a commercial furnace and the magnitude of the benefits to be gained from varying additions of oxygen can be fairly well established at relatively little expense. A new experimental furnace, being built jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota, at Minneapolis, will have a capacity of about 6 tons and will riot require more than 700 cu. ft. of natural air per minute. Its hearth is 36 in. in diameter and its height about 32 ft. Enough oxygen to enrich the blast to the extent recommended by the committee can be obtained from a small oxygen unit. It might even be cheaper to perform preliminary experiments with tanks of oxygen obtained from regular, dealers. A procedure in making the test that suggests itself is to start with operation on normal air; then to use blast, enriched in several steps. Systematic temperature measurements of the tuyeres, slag, and metal would reveal any changes in hearth temperature. When these changes become large enough, the burden may be gradually increased to just within the breaking point and the furnace brought back to normal, if possible, by the addition of oxygen. Such a test would show what might be expected in the way of a decrease in fuel consumption and the time taken to "straighten up" the furnace by means of oxygen. The new furnace at Minneapolis is so equipped that the furnace process can be observed from the stock line to the iron notch. We have been taking gas samples at various elevations in the furnace to study combustibility of the fuel and the reducing power of the gas. If either of these is affected by removing inert nitrogen, the change can easily be measured.

There was no noteworthy development in the oil industry in Peru during 1933 and all activities were restricted to the producing fields. The output of the country increased above that of previous years but there still remained a substantial shut-in production at the close of the year. The total production during 1933 is estimated at 13,259,891 bbl., of which the International Petroleum Co., Ltd. contributed 11,205,-362 bbl. A relatively small amount of new drilling was undertaken during the year. The International completed only one new well although a number of the old producers were reworked and deepened. Comments on Tables There are four oil districts in Peru, as shown in Table 1, although only three of these are now being operated. The exhausted Pirin field was abandoned eight years ago. La Brea-Parinus.—The La Brett-Parinas fields are on the property of the International Petruleum Co., Ltd. in the westernmost part of Peru. These fields include a number of producing districts that are defined by complex fault blocks associated with anticlinal folds. Data covering all the items listed in the table are not available on these fields but can perhaps be supplied in part in the future. Lobitos and Restin.—These two fields belong to the Lobitos Oilfields Limited and are near the coast, 10 to 20 miles north of the La Brea-Parinas fields. According to the Department of Mines and Petroleum of Peru, 311 wells at Lobitos and 197 at Restin had been drilled to the end of 1927. Since that date there has been enough drilling to increase moderately these figures. The depth of wells is not available but it is believed that their average depth is slightly greater than in the La Brea-Parinas area. The productive horizons are of Eocene age. zorritos.—The Zorritos field is the northernmost in Peru and is operated by the Establecimiento Industrial de Petroleo de Zorritos. The field is on the coast about 70 miles north of Lobitos. The number of wells drilled in this field to the end of 1927 was 343, according to the Department of Mines and Petroleum of Peru. J. B. Haffner, or "Barney" as he is known to his wide circle of friends, was born at Landskrona, Sweden, on Christmas Day, 1886. He attended grade and preparatory schools there and then went to the Royal Technical Institute at Stockholm from which he graduated as a mining engineer in 1910. During these school years he gained practical experience in his summer vacations by working in various mines in Sweden and other European countries. Upon graduation he set forth for the land of opportunity, the United States. Upon arrival in this country he found people everywhere talking about the fabulous gold fields in Alaska and thereupon set sail for Nome, to take part in placer gold mining operations. Returning to the States, Barney worked in Illinois coal mines for a time and then carried on some construction work in Oklahoma. In 1913 he accepted employment with the Ray Consolidated Copper Co. in Arizona and soon found himself in positions of responsibility in the operating and

While the literature in the United States on general polarographic technique is extensive, very little appears to be directly applicable to the analysis of flotation tailings. For this reason, it seemed worth while to present a few polarographic methods of ore analysis that have been in constant use in the laboratories of the Hercules Experiment Station for the past few years. At the time of our initial investigation of the polarographic method, there was little or no mention of its specific application to flotation tailings. It was therefore necessary for us to establish suitable conditions for the analysis of our flotation tailings and to consider possible interfering constituents. The polarograph, or dropping mercury electrode, method was discovered in 1925 by J. Heyrovsky and M. Shikata,1 of the Charles University, Prague. This method has since received extensive development and the literature contains many articles on the use of the polarograph for the quantitative determination of metals as well as anions, oxygen in solution, and reducible organic compounds. Kolthoff and Lingane,² by the publication of their book, "Polarography," in 1941 did much to advance the knowledge and use of the polarograph. In chapter 25 of that book, methods for the polarographic analysis of brass, steel and iron products, alloys, and zinc ore are given. Aluminum,³ cadmium,³,4 cobalt,4 cop-per,³-9 gold,10 iron,3,11 lead,³,l2,l³ molybdenum,14 nickel,4,8,9 tin," and zinc³,4,5,7 in ores have been analyzed by the polarograph. However, most of the work on tailing samples has been published in Russian journals and translations are not yet readily available. In this paper we will describe the method that was developed and used in our laboratory for the determination of copper, zinc, and lead in flotation tailings. Principle OF the Method The polarograph is an instrument for applying a potential to a mercury pool and a dropping mercury electrode separated by a solution, and for measuring the resultant electrical current. The procedure is essentially a small-scale electrolysis, in which the voltage required to reduce or oxidize the material identifies it qualitatively and the current measures the concentration quantitatively. Different constituents in a sample may often be determined simultaneously provided they reduce at sufficiently different voltages. An example is the determination of copper and zinc in the same solution. The reduction potentials are quite far apart, as shown in Fig. I.
