During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

An improved visibility system was developed for use on the large (100 ton+) haulage trucks typically operated in open pit and surface mines. The improved visibility system provides the truck driver' with a means of viewing hazardous situations that occur in the extensive blind areas adjacent to his true. The cost effective, reliable, visibility system consists of a closed-circuit television three unique fresnel viewers, and two improved mirrors. This report describes the visibility problems of Large trucks in the surface mining environment, shows the performance of existing mirrors, substantiates concept selection, and describes the prototype improved visibility system.

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using large tractor dozers in land reclamation of strip-mined areas. The procedures used are patterned after engineering models developed for evaluation of military ground vehicles in cross-country operations. Tractor dozer manufacturers furnished information on capabilities of existing equipment and ideas on the practicability of using dozers larger than those currently available Generally, they believe that current dozers in the 500? to 700-horsepower range are about as large as can be built and remain economically feasible. However, one manufacturer has a wheeled dozer rated at 1200 horsepower, and another is testing a tracked dozer of about the same horse-power.

The essence of the method consists in creation of drop of opposite sign at the isolating stoppings, by which air losses through the accident district change direction of their motion. The period of reversal is selected in that way so that air may not find itself in the zone of burning. The method of fighting the fire considered was repeatedly used in the coal mines of the Ukraine. The theoretical basis of efficiency and two examples of use of this method by fighting the underground fires are adduced in the paper.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

This paper traces the co-operative initiative undertaken by South Africa?s gold mining companies through the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) in development of hydraulic technologies. After a brief description of the structure of these technologies? development under COMRO?s stewardship, the paper turns to an overview of the structure of innovation within which these hydraulic technologies were developed. A central focus of this paper is systematic review on whether similar technologies are likely to emerge in the present system of innovation and the role played by innovation policy.

To allow the controlled yielding of mine walls in order to reduce rock-burst hazards and reduce maintenance caused by excessive squeezing forces. Approach Rock bolts that elongate and continue to sustain a load, have been fabricated and tested. This device is an adoption of a concept originally developed in South Africa for use where unusually adverse conditions may warrant the added cost. How It Works A coupling in the rock bolt allows controlled elongation if the load increases beyond the bolt's design strength. (The load can build up either slowly, as during heaving, or rapidly, as before a rock burst.) The elon¬gation of one or more rock bolts surrounding a mine opening, allows the rock to move from its original position to c new position in a controlled manner. This report describes the Foster-Miller program that designed, developed, built and tested an automatic, remote control mine car coupler. This new coupler gives the motorman the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled car s and to determine if the trip is intact. Hazards due to derailment and runaway cars will be reduced as the brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. Laboratory tests described herein have been completed on the coupler set. Applications include, but are not limited to, the unit train system.

This report describes a gage which, when used with my procedure for producing strain relief, will measure the resulting borehole deformation, From the borehole deformation the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses in a plane normal to the axis of the borehole can be calculated. The design considerations, mechanical construction, sensitivity, and stability of the gage are discussed. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades an increasing mount of consideration has been given to the problem of measuring and evaluating stress in rock around underground openings. Several investigators have made theoretical and model studies of the stress and (or) strain concentrations around simulated mine openings or in structural members, such as mine pillars or immediate roof. Other investigators have developed gages for directly or indirectly measuring stress or strain, and a number of reports present the results of measurements made with these gages. Because various methods and instruments have been developed, factors involved in this type of measurement will be briefly considered.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an inventory of the prospects and mineral resources in the Scodies RARE II area (No. 5212) in 1982. No mineral production is recorded from the area, and no mines are being developed. The Scodies RARE II area is comprised primarily of light colored granodiorite with minor inclusions of mafic granitic rocks. Late stage differentiates of magmas resulted in quartz veins and pods. Metasedimentary rocks which have been mineralized in some parts of the Sierra Nevada were not observed within the study area during this investigation but small inclusions have been reported.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

The rapid expansion of gold production in Australia over the last five years can be attributed in part to the development of selective mining techniques for open pit gold operations. These techniques allow an increase in head grade with a substantial reduction in mill feed tonnage, as compared with traditional open pit designs. As a result, the capital requirements for mine development and mill construction are substantially reduced, improving the cash flow profile in the early years of operations. To put such a design into effect, the emphasis of mine production must be on producing gold, rather than tonnes of ore. Mine planning at Martha Hill has been based on such a philosophy. After the quantity and grade of the resource had been defined, the exploration programme was increasingly concerned with the local variability of ore zones, and with determining the position of values within broad ore-definition envelopes. The purpose of this work has been to allow the prediction of the tonnages and grades achievable from various levels of the pit when mining selectively using hydraulic excavators. The studies have so far indicated that the Martha Hill deposit can be mined selectively during the early years of production. The additional costs for detailed grade control and a reduced digging efficiency are more than compensated by the exclusion from the mill feed of much valueless material.

Mintek has been involved in numerous projects to remove Fe and Mn from dilute Co sulphate solutions by means of oxidative precipitation using air/SO2. Test work was done using a gas induction system, designed and supplied by Outotec. Various aspects, such as SO2 concentration, SO2 flowrate, impeller rotation speed and pH were investigated on a 2 m3 scale. Batch tests were performed using a residence time of 5 hours. Impeller rotation speeds of 0-220 rpm were tested, and it seemed that speeds of between 80 and 220 rpm gave similar Fe and Mn removal rates. Co and Cu losses were generally below 1% and 5% respectively at pH 3.

The effect of metallic iron fines on froth flotation of a sulfide ore was examined by comparing the flotation results with and without iron fines present in the flotation feed. Mild steel and ceramic laboratory ball mills were used to grind 600 g sulfide ore charges. The mild steel ball mill generated approximately 4.6 g of iron fines (0.8% of the ore charge mass) when grinding to a product size of 80% passing 200 mesh (75 mm). When a low dosage of a weak xanthate collector was used in flotation, the impact of the iron fines on sulfide flotation was marked. Higher dosages of stronger xanthate collectors rendered the impact of the iron fines much less significant. Consumption of the collectors by the powdery iron fines is believed to cause the differences observed in the flotation results. A galvanic effect on flotation was not evident in this study. The impact of the iron fines on silicates depression was also examined.

Anticipating the availability of tiltmeters suitable for use in boreholes, this article proposes a method of using one or more of these meters to determine in situ stress distribution before and after mining operations. Several ways of using relief techniques to measure in situ stresses in rocks have been developed. These techniques, summarized by Merrill,1 involve measuring deformations which take place when a specimen of rock is wholly or partially isolated from the stress field in the surrounding rock. Measurements of rock deformation caused by stress relief from mining operations can, in principle, also be used to estimate in situ stress distributions. Müller2 has mentioned experiments being carried on in Austria with a "deformation indicator" to determine the tilting of holes drilled before a mine opening is made. Similar work using borehole extensometers has been reported by Potts? and Duvall4 has called attention to the possible use of tiltmeters in making these measurements. Considerable attention is now being paid to the use of tiltmeters in detecting rock deformation associated with fault movements, earthquakes, earth tides, etc. The instruments used for these measurements have usually been of the mercury tube, water tube, or quartz fiber type, but because of their large size, and/or fragile nature, such instruments would not be suitable for use in mining stress measurements. Recent instrumentation developments, however, give promise that rugged, sensitive tiltmeters small enough for use in boreholes may soon be available.' In anticipation of these developments, this article presents a number of calculations of the possibility of using one or more tiltmeters emplaced in a drill hole prior to mining operations to determine the in situ stress distribution both before and after a mining operation. The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique. A self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed to provide complete respiratory protection for a miner in an irrespirable atmosphere. The apparatus has the desired features of comfort, reliability, maintainability, and quick-donning capability. The apparatus is packaged in a moistureproof envelope and is protected in a shock absorbing, fiberglass resin carrying case. The apparatus is a small, lightweight, one-time-use device that can be readily worn on a miner's belt, requires no maintenance and is designed to have a shelf life of five years and a carrying life of three years. It is deployed to the use position in a period of 15 to 30 seconds. Man tests conducted in-house and at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) testing laboratories established that this unit meets all performance requirements listed in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 11, Subchapter B, Subpart H (CFR 30, Part 11) for respiratory protective devices. The unit, which has received joint approval (TC-13F-37) on a prototype basis from the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) and NIOSH has: (1) Ten-minute service life under escape conditions. (2) Thirty-minute service life when the wearer is at rest. (3) Peak-to-peak breathing resistance of less than our inches water column height. (4) Inspired gas temperature of less than 135°F. (5) Breathing gas contents greater than 19.5 volume per cent of oxygen and less than 2.5 per cent carbon dioxin. (6) A weight (complete in carrying case) of 2.75 lbs. (7) A carrying case size of 6-1/2"x 5-1/8"x 3-1/8".
