ELASTIC constants of yttrium and eleven of the rare earth elements have been measured. This has been accomplished by measuring the propagation velocities of ultrasonic pulses. The velocity measurements were made by noting the elapsed time between an applied pulse and the appearance of successive echoes. The pulse-echo technique has become relatively common, and the basis of the measurement is outlined in several standard tests, e.g., Heuter and Bolt.1 Two important assumptions are made when using this method for the determination of elastic moduli. First, the pulse is assumed to propagate as a plane wave. To justify this assumption, the cross section of the test specimen should be large compared to the wave length of the transmitted pulse. For these measurements on the rare earth elements the minimum cross section wave length ratio was about 20. A second assumption which must be made when using polycrystalline specimens is that the grains are sufficiently numerous and randomly oriented so that the specimen may be approximated as elasti-cally isotopic. The grain size in the as-cast specimens which were used is believed to be sufficiently fine for this approximation, and the degree of preferred orientation is believed to be small. Supporting this viewpoint is the fact that elasticity measurements by the pulse-echo technique on as-cast specimens of other metals give results which are in satisfactory agreement with values obtained by other techniques. Hence, it is believed that the measured elasticity values for the rare earth elements are not apt to be seriously in error due to the assumption of elastic isotopy. The apparatus used in this determination was a modified Sperry Reflectoscope with a precisely calibrated time base circuit. Piezoelectric transducers were used both to generate the pulse and to detect the echoes. X-cut quartz crystals were used for the longitudinal modes, and Y-cut quartz crystals were used for the shear modes. Frequencies of 2.25 and 5 megacycles per sec were employed. Most of the specimens were 2.5 to 5.0 cm in length. Results Table I is a tabulation of the measured propagation velocities of longitudinal waves and of shear waves, together with densities obtained by Sped- ding, Daane, and Herrmann2 from lattice parameter measurements. The shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Young's modulus were calculated from the data in Table I through use of the following relationships: µ = pv32 [1] s=2-(vb/vs)2/2[1-(vb/vs)2] [2] and Y= 2µ(l+s) [3] where s is the shear modulus, Y is the Young's modulus, s is Poisson's ratio, p is the density, V0 is the longitudinal wave velocity, and v, is the shear wave velocity. The calculated quantities are shown in Table 11. Compressibility values can be computed from the relationship and the computed values may be compared with measured values obtained by Bridgman.8 Table III lists the data for such a comparison. The agreement is satisfactory, being particularly good for neodymi- um and gadolinium, poor for samarium, and intermediate for the other elements. Some variation is expected since Bridgman's measurements are isothermal, whereas the present measurements are adiabatic. In addition there may be some effect due to small variations in purity. Though most of the rare earth metals measured by Bridgman and all of the metals used in the present measurements were prepared at this laboratory, minor purity variations might exist since the samples came from different lots. Also, any imperfections such as dislocations, vacancies, voids, grain boundaries, microcracks, etc., should contribute to the volume change of a com-

This paper describes research at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo., to improve blasting techniques and reduce breaking costs. Many of the conclusions are applicable to any mining operation. Experiments Were conducted on many phases of blasting. The effectiveness of various grades of explosives was compared, and several different drill-hole patterns were tried in heading rounds. An experiment was conducted to determine the maximum effective burden for various diameter blast holes. High-speed motion-picture studies were made of blasts, and the time for initial movement of rock after detonation of the explosive was measured. Experiments with millisecond-delay detonators in heading rounds proved that, when used properly, these detonators result in improved fragmentation, economical use of explosive, and compact, easily loaded muck piles.

"La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d'Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac's East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac's Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda's Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d'Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac's Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda's Horne smelter as flux. When Lac's East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

In 1924, the Crescent Eagle Oil Co., while drilling the salt section of the Paradox formation in Grand County, Utah, encountered a salt that did not appear to be sodium chloride. This salt was analyzed and showed the presence of potash minerals, both sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgC12.6H2O). Because of the high potash content of the sample, there was considerable speculation: (I) as to whether the hole had been salted, and (2), if not, the extent, richness, and the depth at which the deposit occurred. The discovery caused a large amount of activity in the area. During the next few years, 68 potash prospecting permits were issued by the Government, 24 under the Act of 1917 and 44 under the Act of Feb. 7, 1927, each including about four sections of land. Several holes, all shallow, were drilled for potash. A number of holes were drilled for oil into the salt horizon and the cuttings collected at the oil wells were examined petrographically and chemically. The shallow test holes were not sufficiently deep to reach the potash horizon and revealed nothing of value, but several of the oil test holes gave some indication of where potash might be found. Location and Geology of Deposits The potassium and magnesium salts have been found in various places from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks about seven miles west of Thompsons, in eastern Utah, to Cane Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River— a distance north and south of about 35 miles. In this locality, there appear to be five separate deposits: the Crescent Eagle area, which is in T. 22 S., R. 19 E.; the Salt Valley area, in the vicinity of the north-south line of T. 23 S., between R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; the Seven Mile area, in the eastern part of T. 25 S., R. 20 E.; the Cane Creek area, on the Colorado River, in T. 26 S. and T. 27 S., R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; and the Salt Wash area, in T. 22 S. and T. 23 S., R. 16 E. and R. 17 E. (Fig. I.) The Crescent Eagle and Salt Valley areas are in the Salt Valley anticline, some of the wells being in the fault graben and others outside. Structurally, the Salt Valley anticline is very complex, and can be described in general terms as a northwesterly plunging collapsed anticline about 15 miles long. In the Crescent Eagle area, the valley graben is about 1 1/2 mile wide and the salt probably forms a plug, the apex of which is in the vicinity of the Crescent Eagle well. Owing to the complex structure, there has been every opportunity for flowage in the salt to cause local thinning or thickening of beds. The early history and progress of anthracite stripping, from the first known operation at Summit Hill in 1821 through 1917, was covered in 1917 in a paper by J. B. Warriner,1 then chief engineer, now president of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co., and stripping methods between 1917 and 1931 were the subject of a paper in 1931 by H. H. Otto,2 of the Hudson Coal Company. . The present paper is confined to methods used today on pitching beds in the western middle and southern anthracite fields. The anthracite industry, not unlike other large industries, had been affected for more than a decade by the adverse economic conditions of the country. High development and operating costs and the competition of other fuels caused some collieries to be closed temporarily, while others were permanently abandoned. In order to obtain a larger tonnage at a lower development cost, a larger stripping program was put into effect by many companies. In 1932, stripping operations accounted for 3½ million tons, or 7 per cent of the total anthracite production of the year, and in the next 10 years this increased until more than double that amount, or over 14 per cent of the total production, was from stripping operations. These figures represent the total production of the entire anthracite region; unfortunately, the figures have not been separated from the different fields. There are some operations in the southern and middle western fields where the tonnage obtained from stripping amounts to more than 30 per cent of the total colliery production. Stripping operations on pitching beds present difficult problems. Owing to the various geological formations, a different situation is encountered in nearly every stripping pit; and because of the proximity of an overlying bed, it is very often necessary to load the entire overburden into trucks and haul it out of the pit to the dump area, although back filling and casting is done whenever possible. Beds in the areas described in this paper pitch from 20" to 90 and some are on the invert in many sharp folds and faults. Planning The more successful strippings have had adequate engineering analysis. Some work is being done without much preliminary planning, but many strippings would have failed completely if close supervision by the engineering department had not been . maintained. Pine Creek Goldfields Limited (PCG) is rehabilitating the Enterprise Pit to an aquatic habitat and potential water resource. This paper discusses the development and implementation of that plan. Pine Creek Goldfields Ltd's Enterprise Mine is located approximately 230 km south of Darwin. Open cut mining of the orebody commenced in 1985 and continued for eight years with 14 million m3 of ore and overburden extracted. Geochemical testing of exposed rock types in the pit has demonstrated a propensity to produce acid, and dissolved metals. A plan of management has been developed and implemented to minimise the risk of acid formation and improve the overall water quality in the final void. In developing the plan prime consideration was given to reducing the potential for pit water to impact upon the regional groundwater. An interception system was constructed on Pine Creek to divert approximately 9 km2 of upper catchment into the northern end of the Pit. Construction of the diversion system was completed in December 1993 and a comprehensive surface and groundwater monitoring program initiated. The monitoring program and associated studies are also discussed.

"CeO2 doped with lower valence cations, such as Y3+, Sm3+, Gd3+ etc. is considered as electrolyte material for low temperature SOFC. Doping introduces additional oxygen vacancies and improves ionic conductivity. This work describes the preparation of yttria-calcia doped-ceria precursor material, its sintering in DC and AC field methods, and characterization of sintered electrolytes with respect to the ionic conductivity. Doped precursor materials were prepared by a controlled co-precipitation process. Sintering of prepared, pelletized particulates was carried out using three different methods such as: 1) conventional; 2) spark plasma sintering; and 3) an alternating current field at 1125°C (AC assisted sintering). The mechanism involved in the conductivity improvement as a function of defect density, grain boundary area and phase stability will be discussed. INTRODUCTIONThe performance of SOFCs depends highly on the properties of materials. Subtle variations in the composition, microstructure, or density of SOFC components can considerably alter the power output capabilities of fuel cells. Early SOFCs utilized zirconia based electrolytes but efforts in lowering the operating temperatures of SOFCs have prompted investigations into several other oxygen ion conductors – often modified with dopants to either promote the formation of oxygen vacancies or to stabilize a vacancy rich high temperature phase – such as bismuth oxide, lanthanum gallate, and ceria.The transport of oxygen ions through the electrolyte first begins with diffusion into the material. While this is generally a surface kinetics phenomenon, it is safe to say that it is highly dependent on oxygen pressure and vacancy gradients. The role of the cathode in SOFCs is to reduce oxygen at the electrolyte surface creating an O2– ion gradient which induces permeation into the material. Once inside and under the influence of a potential field, O2– ions migrate by a vacancy hopping mechanism, Catlow, C.R.A. (1990), effectively exchanging positions throughout the matrix until they reach the anode and react, thus leaving the matrix."

[This report describe the first experiment of the Anthracite Research Laboratory, Bureau of Miners, in attempting to reduce underground-mining costs and conserve anthracite as a natural r-source by introducing now minim methods. The work war, dons in cooperation with one of the large anthracite-producing companies. It applies to productive mining, characterized by comparatively low cost, per ton and high production per man, as differentiated from development mining, which is always necessary before the, productive or retreat phase can begin. The system d scribed in this report is believed to be generally applicable to beds pitching 70° to 90° and, under certain conditions, to beds pitching loss than 70°. After development hate been completed, an openings is made, extending the full width of the 9- to 10-foot coal bad and reaching from the haulageway to the vertical limits of the solid coal. Long drill holes (20 to 50 feet) charged with about one stick of permissible explosive riper foot of length are fused to break the coal. Once broken, the coal is loaded onto a shaker conveyor by gravity and thence into mine: cars. The coal is mined retreating in 15- to 20-foot sections that are broken and loaded onto the conveyor through a specially constructed chute. In the Bureau?s experimental work, the height of sections arse ranged from 35 to 60 fact, depending on the geologic extent of the coal bed.]

In the use of the apparatus purchased for the new chemical laboratories of the university, no piece has given us more satisfaction, or has been a greater success, than a new still which is the subject of this paper. In the designing of this still I had two definite objects in view ; one, the utilizing of steam from the large 60 horse-power boiler used in heating the building, and the other, a provision for making distilled water with gas, when steam from the heating-plant was not available. The still is encased in wrought-iron, with a lining of asbestos, and is provided with a float which automatically regulates the flow of water from the supply-pipe. It was made for me by G. J. M?rrle, Pforzheim, Germany, and was imported by Messrs. Eimer & Amend, of New York City. It is a beautiful piece of apparatus, and the workmanship is excellent in every detail. The essential parts of this apparatus will be understood by consulting the accompanying figures, but a few words of explanation may be appropriate. The still has a capacity of seven gallons, and is made of heavy copper, tin-lined. Underground mining with the cut and fill method has been declining during the past decade or so, being replaced mostly by sublevel open stoping methods. During 1983 the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. (AMIRA) commissioned a review of the method, with the aim of compiling the state-of-the-art, indicating future trends and recommending topics for research that would be needed to support this future mining. Mines using the cut and fill method in Australia and three other countries were visited to compile current practices and expected developments.Cut and fill is mostly used where geological and ground conditions are unsuitable for open or caving methods. These range from narrow, irregular orebodies to wide, massive orebodies where pillars are retained in ore. There is significant potential for improvement and further development of the method. It may then be used in a broader range of conditions and for orebodies that may not otherwise be viable to mine.

Introduction History. Vat leaching operations began in October 1953. Since that time, about 4.2 million tpy of oxide ore averaging 0.72% copper have been treated. Economic conditions, improved operating methods, and increased production facilities have allowed the ore grade to be reduced over the years. The average ore grade was 0.84% Cu during the 1950s, 0.68% in the 1960s, and was 0.50%, or below, during the 1970s. By 1961 some 35 million tons of oxide ore had been removed from the mine, exposing the underlying sulfide ore body. A 5,000¬ tpd concentrator was constructed and put into operation to treat the sulfide ore in November 1961.1 The original crushing plants were used for both oxide and sulfide ores, but by adding a third crushing shift, six days per week, the total ore treated was raised from 12,000¬17,000 tpd. Dwindling oxide ore reserves prompted expansion of the concen¬trator to 13,500 tpd in 19672 so that exhaustion of known reserves of both ores would occur at nearly the same time. Again, no additional crushing facilities were added during the expansion. It was anticipated that the treatment rate of oxide ore would be reduced from 12,000 to about 9,000 tpd. Instead, the addition of two crushing shifts per week and improved operating procedures have increased the treatment rate to 26,500 tpd-13,000 tpd to the leaching plant and 13,500 tpd of sulfide ore treated in the concentrator. Geology. The Yerington ore body is a disseminated porphyry copper deposit where a quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive contains the major part of the ore values, with some copper mineralization found in the adjacent granodiorite and other rocks. The geology of the Yerington Mine was aptly described by J. R. Wilson (Mining Congress Journal, June 1963). The ore body is one of few porphyries where geologic conditions were optimum for the formation of an important concentration of oxidized ore with minimum economic effect of secondary enrichment. The principal mineral in the oxidized zone is chrysocolla, which irreg¬ularly occurs dispersed throughout the rock and as narrow seams along fissures. The grade of the ore in the oxidized zone is generally the same as in the primary sulfide below, although some massive concentrations do occur as vein-like fissures and as filling of breccia zones. Cuprite, tenorite, melaconite, malachite, and azurite occur but are not abundant. Lying between the chrysocolla horizon and the primary sulfide is a transition zone whose limits are irregular but seldom with vertical range exceeding 50 ft. Chalcocite, cuprite, melaconite, native copper, and chrysocolla occur superimposed on the primary sulfides. Chalcocite replacement of chalcopyrite, as well as secondary chalcocite, do occur. The primary sulfide minerals are chalcopyrite and pyrite, with minor amounts of bornite and covellite. There are no appreciable gold or silver values, and molybdenite has rarely been noted.

In mineral processing plants, cyclones typically perform the classification duty prior to the downstream recovery process. Particle size distribution of the cyclone overflow is an important parameter and can be viewed as the product of the comminution process. Too coarse of a product will likely have poorly liberated valuable minerals and make recovery difficult. Too fine of a product may represent a missed opportunity to increase plant throughput and/or also result in low recovery due to poor kinetics. “Near-line” particle size measurement instrumentation has been in place for several decades, its availability and low measurement frequency have typically been inadequate for reliable use in automatic control. CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed a novel and robust technology that provides a highly reliable and low maintenance system for “on-line” measurement of the particle size in the overflow of individual cyclones. The system is based around a wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter. The system does not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping that is prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements. Plant data and benefits realized from the latest installations of the CYCLONEtrac PST will be presented. INTRODUCTION Impact-based real-time hydrocyclone particle size measurement Acoustic impact-based particle size tracking is a unique method for measuring and controlling the particle size in cyclone overflow streams. The implementation of this technology is centered upon a sensor probe that is inserted into the overflow slurry stream via a two-inch (50 mm) hole in the overflow pipe (Figure 1). Particles within the slurry stream impact the surface of the probe generating travelling stress waves within the probe. A sensor converts these travelling stress waves into an electrical signal and proprietary signal processing techniques convert these signals into a particle size measurement that is output every four seconds. The sensor is constantly in contact with many particles in the slurry stream, thus obtaining information from orders of magnitude more particles than traditional sample-based technologies. The sensor has no impact on cyclone performance because it is located downstream of the hydrocyclone and the presence of an air core ensures there is no change in the back pressure seen by the hydrocyclone.

Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

Several solid sorbents were compared for their effectiveness in removing sulfur dioxide from flue gases. The materials were tested for the rate of sorption and capacity at about 300° C, and rate of regeneration around 700° C in thin beds and in 4-inch-diameter fluidized beds. Rates of material loss were also estimated. The sorbents tested included three samples of alkalized alumina, two samples of sodium carbonate-impregnated alumina, and one proprietary sample of porous silica impregnated with copper and iron compounds. The results showed that all the alkalized aluminas had good sorption capacities and rates, required high temperature regeneration, and suffered excessive material loss; the sodium carbonate-impregnated aluminas (1) had high sorption rates but barely adequate capacities, (2) required high temperature regeneration, and (3) suffered excessive material losses; and the copper-iron impregnated silica suffered only slight material loss and could be regenerated at a relatively low temperature, but the sorption rate and capacity were too small. None of the sorbents met all the arbitrary performance criteria that follow: sorption rate constant of 1 min-1, sorption capacity of 0.1 g sulfur per g sorbent, regeneration rate constant of about 0.075 min-1 at a reasonable temperature, less than 0.07 pct per hour material loss during operation, and a chemical life of 500 cycles.

"The main goals in zinc electrowinning process are decreasing of power consumption and increasing of current efficiency. In this study, the electrowinning of zinc in the presence of different additives in electrolyte were established and Arabic Gum, Gelatine, sodium lauryl sulphate and l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate in the five levels using Taguchi method was examined. In our previous researches, using orthogonal array, effect of zinc electrowinning parameters such as anode type, current density, sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and zinc ion concentration was studied and the optimized conditions for zinc electrowinning was obtained. Anode composition: Pb-Ag 0.5%-Sn2%-Sb1%, current density (A/m2):500, acid concentration (g/1):165, temperature: 60°C, zinc ion concentration (g/1):70. Some 80% of world primary zinc production is derived via roast-leach-electrowinning processes [2-4]. In the electrowinning process to both improve final product quality and current efficiency the leachate should be purified [5].To produce zinc a current method is to extractit from acidic zinc sulphate solutions by electrolysis with aluminum cathodes and insoluble lead-based anodes [6]. Though the electrolytic processing of zinc has been performed for many years, there are still current efficiency problems in the cathodic process. These low efficiencies (88- 93%) have a serious impact on the costs associated with the energy consumption. On the other hand, these low efficiencies increase energy consumption and decrease the quality of the surface morphology [7- 8]."

Weight loss measurements were made using a sensitive microbalance operating in a high vacuum system. The Langmuir equation was used to Calculate the vapor pressures of the several metals and alloys. Aluminum lowered the vapor pressure of i9,on in a 5.4 Al-94.6 Fe alloy, and of iron and chromium in a 4.8 Al-21.5 Cr-73.7 Fe alloy. The influence of oxide films formed on the alloys on the effective vapor pressures of the alloys was also studied. These studies were used to aid in the inte9,pretation of the high temperature oxidation of alloys based on iron, chromium, and aluminum. RECENT studies on the oxidation of chromium1 and the heat resistant alloy 5 Al-22 Cr-73 Fe showed transitions in the rate of oxidation at 900o and 1050oC respectively. The transition for chromium occurred at a temperature where the rate of evaporation of chromium from oxide-free surfaces equalled the rate of chromium atoms reacting with oxygen. This paper presents new vapor pressure studies on iron, chromium, and the specially prepared alloys 5.4 Al-94.6 Fe, 21.9 Cr-78.1 Fe, and 4.8 Al-21.5 Cr-73.7 Fe. The ternary alloy is similar in basic composition to the patented heat-resistant commercial alloy known as Kanthal. The binary alloys were studied to show the individual effects of aluminum on the vapor pressure of iron and of iron on the vapor pressure of chromium. The purpose of the proposed studies was to test the influence of metal volatility on the oxidation behavior of heat-resistant alloys based on iron, chromium, and aluminum. Since oxide films formed on the metal may limit metal transfer to the surface, the influence of oxide films on metal volatility was also studied. LITERATURE A) Vapor Pressure. The vapor pressure of iron has been studied by Jones, Langmuir, and Mackay,' Dornte and Nrton. Edwards. Johnston. and Ditmar. and McCabe, Hudson, and Paton. Stull and SinkeT have calculated a heat of sublimation at 298° K of 99.83 kcalper g atom. The vapor pressure of chromium has been reported by Bauer and Brunner,' Speiser, Johnston, and Blakburn, Gulbransen and Andrew,'' Vintaikin,o McCabe, Hudson, and Paton, and Kubaschewski and Heymer.12 Good agreement was obtained except for the early work of Bauer and Brunner.' Stull and Sinke7 calculate a heat of sublimation at 298°K of 95.0 kcal per g atom. Vapor pressure measurements on aluminum have been made by Brewer and Searcy,13 Bauer and Brunner,aand Farkas.I4 Stull and Sinke,7 giving Brewer and Seary's' data the most weight, derive a heat of sublimation of 77.5 kcal per g atom at 298 oK. B) Method. Two methods15 are used for measuring the vapor pressure of metals: 1) The Langhuir free evaporation method, and 2) the Knudsen effusion method, In the Langmuir method, used in the present work, the vapor pressure of the metal P is given by the equation: Here M is the molecular weight of the vapor species. T is the absolute temperature. (dw/dt) is the rate of sublimation in g per sq cm per sec and a is the condensation coefficient. a is a measure of the efficiency of condensation of molecules striking the metal surface from the vapor. If condensation results from each collision a is unity. This coefficient has been found to be unity,a, le for metals. These results establish the general validity of the Langmuir free evaporation method as applied to metals. EXPERIMENTAL A) Vacuum Microbalance Method. A modification of the Langmuir free evaporation method was used. Strip specimens were suspended from a sensitive microbalance operating inside of a high vacuum system.
