The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. "The United Nations, through the secretariat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and its Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology, developed the Framework Classification.The UN Classification applies to fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources located on or below the Earth's surface. It aims to simplify reporting of energy and mineral reserves and resources in a globalized world and is intended to improve global communications regarding remaining quantities of non-renewable fossil energy and mineral resources. The UN Classification is not recognized as a Foreign Code under NI 43-101.SECTION I1.,The United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC-2009) applies to fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources located on or below the Earth' s surface. It serves the needs for classification at a global level (for energy and mineral supply studies), for governments (resources management and policy formulation), for industry (business process management) and for financial reporting.SECTION II2.,The UNFC is a generic system in which quantities are classified on the basis of the three fundamental criteria of economic and social viability (E), field project status and feasibility (F), and geological knowledge (G), using a numerical coding system. Combinations of these criteria create a three-dimensional system. Categories (e.g. El, E2, E3) and, in some cases, sub-categories (e.g. E1.1) are defined for each of the three criteria as set out and defined in Annexes I and II.3 The first set of categories (the E axis) designates the degree of favourability of social and economic conditions in establishing the commercial viability of the project, including consideration of market prices and relevant legal, regulatory, environmental and contractual conditions. The second set (the F axis) designates the maturity of studies and commitments necessary to implement mining plans or development projects. These extend from early exploration efforts before a deposit or accumulation has been confirmed to exist through to a project that is extracting and selling a commodity, and reflect standard value chain management principles. The third set of categories (the G axis) designates the level of confidence in the geological knowledge and potential recoverability of the quantities.4. The categories and sub-categories are the building blocks of the system, and are combined in the form of ""classes"". The UNFC can be visualised in three dimensions, as shown in Figure 1, or represented in a practical two-dimensional abbreviated version as shown in Figure 2."

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

The Ising model for the internal energy of a binary alloy has been used to obtain a general equation for the critical resolved shear stress of partially ordered crystals. The equation expresses the stress in terms of the Warren "alphas " and can be used to estimate the variation in strength with order without the assumption, present in the original formulation of this problem in terms of domain size, that order is complete within each domain and that the domains are of ungorm size and shape. In addition, it is the general equation, according to the Ising model, for strengthening by short-range order. Two applications of the equation are considered: One is an estimate of the variation in strength of CkAu with long-range order. The other is an estimate of the variation in strength of FeCo with quench temperature. Reasonable agreement is found with the variations reported in the literature. When the internal energy of an alloy crystal depends upon the distribution of solute, the strength of the crystal will also depend upon it because a portion of the applied stress for plastic deformation will be: where V is the volume of the crystal and E(E) is the energy change associated with the solute redistribution caused by the plastic strain, E. We expect T to equal zero for a crystal having a random arrangement of solute because the arrangement would remain random after plastic deformation. Likewise, we expect it to equal zero when the crystal is perfectly ordered because the motion of paired dislocations found in such crystals does not disrupt order. However, when short-range order exists or when long-range order is incomplete, plastic deformation will decrease the amount of order and additional work, proportional to the ordering energy, will be expended. Fisher&apos; estimated T for crystals having short-range order by assuming an interaction energy between neighboring atoms and estimating the change in the number of unlike neighbors as a dislocation moved through the crystal. (His analysis was limited and several workers2"6 have since given more complete ones.) Fisher minimized the importance of a strengthening mechanism of this type for paired dislocations in a structure having long-range order. ~ottrell,&apos; however, pointed out that T could be appreciable for ordered crystals having antiphase domains. He attributed the strengthening to the increase in surface energy of the domains as they were cut by paired dislocations. Ardley,&apos; in his test of Cottrell&apos;s theory, found that r for Cu3Au crystals obeyed the equation: for 1 > t where 1 is the domain size, t is the domain wall thickness, and y is the surface energy of an antiphase boundary. His experiments represent the classic confirmation of the strengthening mechanism proposed by Cottrell. However, the assumptions involved in using Cottrell&apos;s theory are valid only for large domain size in CU~AU,~"~ i.e., when Eq. [2] reduces to: For small domains, ~linn~ has questioned Ardley&apos;s assumption that order was complete, and, indeed, Stoloff and ~avies" fpnd it incomplete until a size of approximately lOOA was reached. Even when the order within a domain is complete, it is not obvious how one determines the appropriate value for I in a structure where domains vary in size and are irregularly shaped. The purpose of this paper is to estimate T without restrictions upon the degree of order and domain shape. Our major assumption will be the use of a generalization of the model proposed by Bethe" (the Ising model) for the internal energy. This will in fact allow us to combine the theories for strengthening by short-range order and by antiphase domains into a single, general formalism. We will use the results to estimate the variation in strength of Cu3Au crystals with long-range order8 and the variation in flow stress of FeCo crystals with quench temperature.12&apos;13 INTERNAL ENERGY For simplicity, we restrict our considerations to those binary solid solutions which can be described as an arrangement of atoms on a Bravais lattice. An atom site will be indexed by three numbers (PI, pz, p3) determined by the vector: from the origin fixed at atom (0, 0, 0) to the atom site where a&apos;, an, and a, are the lattice translation vectors. We write: For the energy of the crystal where pi(p) is the probability (either zero or one) of finding an atom of type i (i = 1, 2) at site (p), which is shorthand for (pl, pz, p3) and pj(p + r) is that for an atom of type j (j = 1, 2) at the site (p + r), which is shorthand for (pl + rl, The coupling parameter, resents the energy associated with the pair Pi(p), Pj(p + r). Bureau of Mines research to recover arsenic from mining industry waste material and process streams is reported. Batch and column approaches were investigated for adsorbing arsenic from acid leach solutions and ion-exchange eluate solutions with hydrated titanium dioxide granules. A method for producing hydrated titanium dioxide granules was devised to provide material suitable for use in a packed adsorption tower. Selective adsorption of arsenic from acidic leach solutions was achieved. The loading capacity of arsenic on the granules was 14 wt-pct when synthetic solutions were used, but lower when actual leach solutions were used. Other elements in the leach solution were Zn, Cd, and In. The granules were used in an attempt to lower the arsenic content in a solution containing 0.95 g/l W and 0.027 g/l As from a process devised by the Bureau of Mines to treat Searles Lake brine. The arsenic content was lowered to less than 0.001 g/l, but unacceptable amounts of tungsten also were adsorbed by the granules. Adsorbed tungsten was partially stripped with pH 11.5 NaOH, and both tungsten and arsenic were completely stripped with 5M NaOH solution. Repeated loading and stripping of the granules had no effect on the loading capacity for arsenic.

"Several million spent catalytic converters are disposed annually worldwideandeach containing about 0.5-1g ofplatinum and 1-2g of all the platinum group metals (PGMs), then,it is fairly significant to recover PGMs from the spent automobile catalyst. The PGMs’ recovery is a proven technology, including pyro-and hydrometallurgicalmethods, and the highestrecovery can achieve approx. 98 wt.% by acid-leaching method, but theserecyclingtechnology seems to be too highlyenergy-consuming. SincePGMs aredistributed only in coat layer in spent catalyst, it is of great significance to enrich the coat layerwith some physical methods as a pretreatment.In this paper, according to the double-deck structureof the catalyst andthe different properties of the two main compositions, alumina-ceria phase of coat layer and cordieritephase of substrate, the concentration of the coat layer was investigated by combiningthree kinds of physical separation technologies, heating-quenching, crushing and surface grinding. In the first stage, thermal stresscouldgeneratebetween the two phasesby thermal expansion difference,to producefracturesin the thinnest part of coat layerand micro-cracksin coat layerand at the interface of coat layerand cordierite substrate. The second stage of crushing, by jaw and roll crushers, could break dominantly the coat layer and the third stage of surface grinding, carried out by attritor, promoted further separation and concentration of coat layer fromthe substrate.We also improved the attritor grinding by adding a new lift-arm to the cell for achieving better mobility of sample particles in the selective surface grinding."

Australia was one of the world&apos;s principal producers of minerals and metals, and its minerals industry was a leading catalyst in promoting growth of the country. Australia was the world&apos;s largest producer of alumina, bauxite, diamond, ilmenite, monazite, opal, rutile, sapphire, and zircon. It was the premier exporter of alumina, coal, ilmenite, refined lead, monazite, rutile, and zircon, and was the second leading exporter of iron ore, after Brazil. Ranking behind China, the United States, the U.S.S.R., the German Democratic Republic, Poland, and the Federal Re-public of Germany, Australia was the seventh largest producer of coal (all grades) in the world. Australia was the fourth largest gold producer in 1988, after the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and the United States. It was the second largest producer of zinc, the third largest producer of nickel, the fourth largest producer of uranium, and the seventh largest producer of copper. 2 The country&apos;s mineral wealth was so extraordinary that it was virtually self-sufficient in most mineral commodities. Endowed with abundant resources of coal, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and uranium, Australia was one of the few market economy countries that was a net exporter of mineral fuels. About 90% of Australia&apos;s consumption of crude oil was supplied by domestic production; this was expected to decline significantly about 1990, unless significant new oilfields were discovered.

The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first&apos;stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

The tungsten potentialities of the Combination mine were examined by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1947. A report based upon his personal knowledge of the mine and the results of the examination contained recommendations for further investigation. This report presents factual data from Bureau of Mines field investigations begun in August 1947 and continued until December 1948, except for a 5-month recess during the first winter. The Combinat.ion mining property of 52 patented claims and 15 patented mill sites is in the Black Pine mining district, Granite County, Mont., 11 miles northwest of Philipsburg. The altitude in the mine vicinity is approximately 6,500 feet.

A new process of enrichment Cu in molten copper slag under electric field is presented in this article. The experiments were carried out in the laboratory on a kilogram scale. The mobility of copper slag was improved by the technique of carbon reduction. The effects of temperature, electric field strength and intermittent feeding speed were investigated on Cu migration. The results showed that the best experimental conditions were the temperature at 1523K, electric field strength was 1.5V•cm-1 and feeding rates was 15 g•(10min)-1. The copper content of the slag decreased below 0.6wt%. The process was compared to the traditional electric furnace process of slag cleaning, there was reduced the energy consumption and heat loss, and also harmful gas emissions such as SO2 and CO2, accompanied by improved the efficiency of slag cleaning.

The milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited has been in operation for a period of 2 years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, have been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work has been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of inter-related variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feel that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic, non-segregated, syenite and granite pegmatites. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, uraninite, uranotharite, fluorite, titanite, cyrolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1,000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching and clarification capable of 1,500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on October 29, 1956 and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1,000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1,410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93,0 pet do several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for 8 months in 1958 has been 97.1 pet although all grinding mills were relined during this period.

The mining regulations of all 50 States were reviewed by the Bureau of Mines, and those parts pertaining to the use of internal combustion (IC) engines (particularly diesel engines) in underground mines or confined spaces were extracted. Also extracted were subjects associated with the use of IC engines; for example, storage and handling of flammable liquids, maintenance, and ventilation requirements. As the laws now stand, 29 States have specific regulations that affect the operation of diesel engines in underground coal and/or metal and nonmetal mines. The other States have no regulations because either they have no mining activities or they defer to Federal regulations. Six states have regulations expressly prohibiting the use of diesels in underground coal mines. Specific contacts (addresses and phone numbers) precede each State&apos;s regulations to facilitate inquiries about regulation revisions and interpretation.

Business development process. Throughout Cyprus Amax&apos;s early months in Russia, the company stayed focused on what was needed from a deposit for economic success. Cyprus Amax&apos;s reason for success in Russia is that all involved - its Russian partners, the workforce and expatriates - provided a focused effort that served the project as it worked through the tender process and the Russian regulations. The company developed an understanding of the regulatory process by working with solid, ethical partners. Infused into the Kubaka management structure were Russians with the knowledge to facilitate the process and a professional group of expatriates. Developing credibility and a solid rapport with the Russian mining authority was critical to the success of this venture. Identifying and gaining the trust of key Russian individuals was also critical during the early stages. Gaining their trust and building credibility was part of the process. These key Russians were brought to the United States to visit existing Cyprus Amax mines. These efforts proved valuable in building an understanding with the Russians about the kind of company Cyprus Amax is and the kind of efficient operations that it can run. This was a learning process for all parties. Fortunately, the company was dealing with intelligent and educated people.

ON MAY 22 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of its founding at Wilkes- Barre, Pa., in May, 1871. The Directors have transferred the May meeting of the Board to Wilkes-Barre, and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section has invited as many members of the Institute as can to be present at this time and to join with their fellow-engineers at Wilkes-Barre in the inspection trip through a portion of the anthracite district that has been planned. Ac- cess to Wilkes-Barre is easy, from nearby points, over excellent automobile roads, or by train. The distance from New York is only about 140 miles. , It is hoped to engage a special car for those travelling by train from New York, which will leave the Pennsylvania Station over the Lehigh Valley Railroad at 11:50 p.m., arriving in Wilkes-Barre the next morning. Return can be made from Wilkes-Barre by sleeper the same evening, arriving in New York Saturday morning. Other trains are available for those who prefer a daylight journey.

Located in the James Bay Territory of Quebec (figure 1), the Clearwater property is jointly owned by SOQUEM Inc. and Eastmain Resources Inc. Exploration on the property since the early 70&apos;s has resulted in the discovery of several gold showings. Exploration work by the joint venture since 1995 has led to the definition of the Eau Claire Zone containing an indicated resource of 540 000 tonnes grading 11.1 g/t Au (8.7 g/t Au cut at 34.28 g/t Au). Hosted by the archean Eastmain Greenstone Belt, the property geology is dominated by mafic volcanics containing thin horizons of felsic volcanics and/or sedimentary rocks (figure 2). The sequence is metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies and contains two small toalitic intrusions. Regionally, the structural trend is oriented E-W but in the area of the Eau Claire Zone a second trend oriented NE-SW is also present. The first exploration work on the property was conducted by SEREM and SDBJ from 1973 to 1976. It consisted of an airborne electromagnetic survey and a ground follow-up program on several grids. This program, comprising geological mapping, geophysics and drilling, led to the discovery of the Natel showing where a drill intersection returned 8.89 g/t Au over 2.65 m. From 1978 to 1985 the area was withdrawn from staking because of the hydroelectric projects of the James Bay. In 1985, Westmin Resources Limited and Eastmain Resources began an exploration program based on a helicopterborne electromagnetic survey. Once again, a ground follow-up program was conducted on several grids. This program included a soil geochemical survey that identified a strong (up to 10 g/t) gold anomaly. Drilling of the anomaly led to the discovery of the Eau Claire Zone where resources were estimated at 270 000 tonnes grading 6.1 g/t Au at the end of 1990. In 1995, SOQUEM Inc. took an option to gain a 50% interest on the property and obtained its interest in 1998. Since 1995, two principal mineralization zones were identified on the property. The "Rosemary Zone" consists of veinlets and disseminations of pyrite and chalcopyrite within a magnetite-rich amphibolite. The mineralized zone was identified by stripping within an area of 1000 by 500 metres. Drilling indicates copper grades up to 0.32 % Cu over 49.2 m. with locally grades of 0.75 % Cu over 5.9 m. The mineralised zone is associated with QFP dykes and corresponds to a strong magnetic anomaly and a strong copper and molybdenum soil anomaly. The "Eau Claire Zone" consists principally of a set of gold bearing quartz-tourmaline veins oriented E-W and dipping at 45-50??to the south (figure 3). More than ten different veins are recognised in the zone and up to eight veins were observed in a single trench (figure 4). The host rock between the veins shows a degree of deformation similar to the regional volcanosedimentary rocks. Each vein is hosted by a unit of actinolite-tourmaline-biotite schist up to one meter thick. The veins and their hosting schist clearly cross-cut the schistosity of the hosting lithologies and the contacts between amphibolites and felsic to intermediate rocks. Usually, the veins are less than a meter thick and are composed of quartz, tourmaline and calcite. The proportion of quartz and tourmaline varies from 0 to 80% within a single vein. The veins commonly show massive, banded or brecciated texture. Sulphides, mainly pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite, generally form less than 5% of the vein material.

Zeta potentials and settling rates of an oil sands tailings sample taken from Syncrude Canada Ltd&apos;s Aurora Stacker Pilot Operation were studied. Two clay minerals, kaolinite and illite, were also studied since these are the major constituent minerals in the fine oil sands tailings. Process water, decanted water as well as distilled water were used. It was observed that the zeta potentials of the tailings solids showed maximum negative values in process water at pH 8-10, which coincides with the pH of commercial hot water bitumen extraction process. The settling rates of the tailings sample were very low, at 0.008 m/hr in decanted water and 0.04 m/hr in process water. The rates were increased to 1.0 m/hr in decanted water and 0.13 m/hr in process water at an addition of 50 g/t Ciba AF1235. Although the settling rate was higher the supernatant was cloudier in decanted water than in process water. Further increase in the dosages of Ciba AF1235 did not increase the settling rates in decanted water but gradually increased it in process water, reaching 0.46 m/hr at 100 g/t. The results indicated that lower concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2 (in decanted water) benefited settling rates but did not benefit supernatant clarity. Test results also indicated that Ciba AF1235 caused selective flocculation of the tailings sample, since the top sediments had higher illite and lower quartz contents than the bottom sediments.

El presente texto tiene como objetivo la evaluación del oro nativo y electrum encontrado en su forma libre, diseminado, encapsulado en matrices sulfurosas y sulfatadas que fue empleado en los procesos de flotación y lixiviación. Para ello, se estudiaron 54 muestras que fueron analizadas por difracción de rayos X y clasificadas en tres grupos con 18 muestras cada uno e identificadas de matrices oxidada, sulfatada y sulfurosa. Después de tamizadas fueron colocadas en briquetas de 4 mm de diámetro y analizadas por microscopía electrónica para los estudios estadísticos de los minerales portadores de oro y para los estudios de microscopía óptica.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid- Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution of Australia.

HUNT and Jackson&apos; have recently suggested that binary eutectics might be classified according to the entropy of fusion of the component phases. Such a classification was in fact proposed2 some time ago by the authors and the purpose of this communication is to present some supporting evidence. As pointed out by Hunt and Jackson&apos; typical metals of low entropy of fusion, ?S, tend to form normal eutectics (using Scheil&apos;s terminology3). Where one phase is metallic (low ?S) and the other nonmetallic (high AS) then anomalous structures are formed. These anomalous structures may either be regular (e.g., Bi-Sn)or irregular (e.g., A1-Si). Finally Hunt and Jackson suggest that where both phases are of high ?S regular faceted structures are formed. In the proposed classification2 the ratio of the entropies of fusion is taken as the quantitative parameter, i.e., ?Sa/?SB = E, where e > 1.0. An extensive literature survey has been carried out2,4 for reliable photomicrographs of eutectic structures. The structures, numbering 151, have been classified into two classes, viz., normal (i.e., lamellar and rodlike) and anomalous. The latter group has been arbitrarily subdivided into regular and irregular anomalous eutectics. Details and sources of the structures are given elsewhere.2,4 In the absence of better thermodynamic data the value of E has been determined for each of the systems making the following assumptions and approximations: l) The entropy of fusion of solid solutions may be calculated additively;5 ii) Inter metallic compounds are treated similarly but with the addition of the following term for fully ordered structures.5 -4.573(Ni lOg10 Nl + N2 log10 N2) where Nl and N2 are the atomic fractions. It might be argued that the entropies of fusion are meaningless as the eutectic phases form at some temperature (T,°K) below their true melting point (Ta or Tb). As AS, = Lo/To if La the latent heat of fusion of a, is assumed independent of temperature, the actual entropy change AS& is given by La/Te. The ratio of entropies of fusion then becomes Fig. 1 shows E&apos; plotted against cumulative totals for normal and anomalous systems from which it is seen that normal eutectics predominate at low values of E&apos;; e.g., some 90 pct of normal systems lie below E&apos; = 1.5 with 65 pct of anomalous systems above this value. Fig. 1 also shows that the regular anomalous structures occur mostly at low values of c&apos; possibly suggesting growth more akin to normal than anomalous growth. The choice of c as a classification parameter was based on nucleation concepts, it being observed that metals widely separated in Sundquist and Mondolfo&apos;s8 nucleation series were anomalous and those close together normal. The basis of these classification views is really outside the intended scope of this communication but it is hoped to explain them fully in the near future.7 Having arrived at this entropy of fusion classification by nucleation considerations it is interesting to note that Hunt and Jackson&apos;s ideas are based on growth considerations. Elsewhere one of the authors4 has shown that an even better classification of the metallographic structures reviewed is obtained from purely conventional heterogeneous nucleation concepts. It has been found that systems having a value of the parameter +b less than 0.28 are almost certainly normal and above this anomalous: V, is the gram atomic volume. This parameter is nevertheless closely related to c and c&apos;, these being an approximation of p. The parameter is also related to the other classification3,8,9 which have met with any success in the past. Many factors -- political, environmental and technological -- will determine the extent to which the United States realizes the potential of its vast coal resources. Not the least of these factors is technogical development including mining, processing and transportation. With regard to processing technology, about 50% of the 800x106 tons of coal mined annually in the U.S. is processed in preparation plants. The purpose of the physical separations accomplished in these preparation plants is to remove ash (present as clays and other oxide minerals) and sulfur &apos;present mostly as pyrite). Coal flotation circuits for such separations are becoming more important in the processing of minus 28 mesh coal. (1,2,3) For example in the U.S. in 1960, 31 flotation plants processed 26,500 tpd; whereas in 1980, there were 80 flotation plants which processed 78,300 tpd. This corresponds to an annual growth in flotation plant capacity of 10 per year during the past two decades. Coal flotation is based on the natural or induced hydrophobicity of coal particles which are separated from hydrophilic ash and sulfur constituents by attachment to air bubbles. The coal particle/air bubble aggregates are collected in a froth phase which is created by the addition of a suitable frother such as MISC. Without exception, such separations are made in a conventional flotation cell, which, in essence, is a stirred tank reactor with a shrouded rotor to shear the air as it passes through a hollow shaft. The dispersed air bubbles (4.0 mm diameter) are stabilized by addition of the frother. Collision of the air bubbles with, and/or precipitation of the air bubbles on, the coal particles results in the formation of coal particle/air bubble aggregates which rise in the gravitational field and are collected in the froth phase developed at the top of the flotation cell. Restraints on successful separation by this conventional flotation technique are particle size and retention time. Generally it is found that effective flotation is only achieved for particle sizes between 10 and 1000 microns. Further, with respect to retention time, it is found that a nominal retention time of at least 2 minutes is required for successful separations. These facts limit the effectiveness of conventional coal flotation. Coal fines may be lost in the reject stream and disposal is frequently a problem. The retention time required for conventional flotation results in large floor space demands which limit the capacity of the plant.
