The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Mingo County, W. Va.

Cyanide is a critically important chemical to the mining and metallurgical industry. It has a strong affinity for metals making it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment as well as a lixiviant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but, because cyanide is very toxic, safeguards are required to prevent accidental spills and treat effluents before being discharged. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and destruction for cyanide management purposes are therefore reviewed. The methods have been broadly categorized as physical, -adsorption. complexation and oxidation methods including photolysis and other advanced-oxidation processes. Reaction mechanisms for these methods are presented throughout this paper, Finally, the methods are compared in regards to their effectiveness in treating various cyanide species: free cyanide, thiocyanate, weak-acid dissociables, and strong-acid dissociables.

SINCE Cahn&apos;s¹ paper on plastic deformation in orthorhombic (a) uranium an increasing amount of work is to be expected on orientation of single crystals and preferred orientation in this metal. It would seem desirable to have a table of angles between crystallographic planes (hkl) and (HKL). Table I shows these angles as distances from (loo), (0l0), and (00l), and in Fig. 1 as a standard (001) stereographic projection. Only the locations of poles whose diffracting planes produce Cu Ka reflections up to 0 = 70.5" (i.e. (154) ) are given." The relative reflection of these planes are represented by circle diameters. It is hoped that the projection may also be used in making inverse pole figures, originally suggested by Harris.&apos; Values of 4 were calculated from the expression hH kK 1L cos = hH/a²+kK/b²-lL/c² where the lattice parameters a, b, c, and the spac-ings d were taken from the work of Jacob and Warren." ATTENTION has been given to the sources and supply of the raw vegetal matter and. the conditions of its submission to the process of sedimentation. An original and most valuable review has been made of the more important or significant chemical compounds originally contained in the organic debris, and of the biochemical changes-undergone by the latter during deposition. Consideration also has been given to the factors controlling the selective biochemical decomposition, in whole or in part, of :this debris, and the deposition, as, sediments, of the undecomposed plant structures and compounds, together with more or less of the so-called "ulmic," or "humic," organic decomposition products in colloidal solution.1 BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES END IN PEAT FORMATION The biochemical process terminates in the peat stage of coal formation, and with the cessation of this process organic sedimentation is completed. All subsequent changes result from geological causes and conditions. The deposits are in the form of peats of different types, organic muds, oozes, etc. They are essentially uncompressed and are wholly unconsolidated, and their water content is great, amounting to over 85 per cent. near the surface of the deposit. Many of the chemical compounds remain as in the once living organisms; others are biochemically broken down and new ones formed.

"INTRODUCTION “Explosion protection” refers to techniques used to minimize the potential for electrical and electronic equipment to create an ignition while operating in a hazardous location (HAZLOC). In particular, U.S. coal mines are required to use equipment in certain areas of the mine that has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in a methane and coal dust environment to limit the risk of the equipment creating an ignition-capable spark or a thermal energy ignition. In general, MSHA’s regulations for explosion protection recognize two techniques: the use of explosion-proof enclosures (XP boxes) and 2-fault intrinsic safety for electrical and electronic equipment. For 2-fault intrinsically safe (IS) equipment, the U.S. mining industry requirements are unique in that the equipment is certified by MSHA. The criteria MSHA uses to evaluate equipment for intrinsic safety, as required by Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) [30 CFR, Sections18.20(b), 18.68(a)(1), 19.1(b), 20.1(c)(2), 22.6, 23.6, and 27.20(a)], is published in a document referred to as ACRI2001 (1). Outside of U.S. underground mining, many industries and countries accept equipment that is designed to a consensus-based international standard (ANSI/ISA 60079-11 is the U.S. version). The purpose of this study is to provide an overall assessment of the ANSI/ISA 60079-11 standard on 2-fault intrinsic safety and the MSHA ACRI2001 acceptance criteria, and determine if the ANSI/ISA document can be an alternative to ACRI2001 while maintaining an equivalent or better level of safety for miners. There are many drivers for this study. First, immediately after the 2006 MINER Act (2) was passed, there was a perception in the industry that the unique MSHA requirements were contributing to delays or restricting the availability of equipment to meet the requirements of the Act. Additionally, the MINER Act required that mine operators submit an accident response plan for MSHA approval, to be reviewed every six months. MSHA is required to determine if these plans reflect the most recent credible scientific research and make use of currently commercially available technology. There is a concern, as expressed in a recent National Academy of Science (NAS) study (3), that the unique requirements for U.S. mining may be limiting the technologies available to coal miners and technology options for mine operators. Accordingly, the study recommended that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and MSHA re-examine their technology approval and certification processes to ensure they are not deterring innovation, and explore opportunities to cooperate with other international approval organizations to harmonize U.S. and international standards without compromising safety. Lastly, the National Technology Transfer Act (NTTA) and the accompanying Office of Management and Budget’s OMB-119 circular mandate the use of consensus-based standards by federal agencies. However, for U.S. mining operations, MSHA cannot accept such standards unless a determination is made that such standards provide an equivalent level of protection for the miner, per the requirements of the 1977 Mine Act, the 2006 MINER Act, and 30 CFR Part 18 regulations."

These Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (LPGMP) were prepared by the Sub-Committee on Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The LPGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The LPGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally. The LPGMP consist of 3 sections: • Principles of Process Support in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Estimation; • Appendix A – Use of Supporting Studies in Process Evaluation and Assessment for NI 43-101 Documentation; • Appendix B – Glossary of Terms Relevant to the LPGMP. The LPGMP deal primarily with the description of leading practice as it applies to the mineral processing and extraction of base metals, precious metals, and other mineral products by the application of mineral processing technology. Other commodities may be considered with future updates of these guidelines. It is expected that this is a ‘living’ document and that these guidelines will develop in the future to address the requirements of the mining industry, investing public, and mining professionals involved. Clarifications and changes to these guidelines will be done under the guidance of the Executive Committee of the CMP.

THE memorable features of American history have been making fast during the last century, and notably so since 1860; and they are by no means confined to political or to any one branch of scientific development. Of all the industrial arts, none show a greater change or a mightier progress than the Bessemer manufacture. And this year, while we are celebrating the first centennial of our national life, we can also celebrate the first decennial of American Bessemer practice. While not forgetting or undervaluing what has been done in other countries, I have thought that a brief history of the introduction and development of the Pneumatic or Bessemer process in America would be of interest. In 1863 the Kelly Pneumatic Process Company was formed and an arrangement entered into with William Kelly, who had taken out letters-patent of the United States, Nos. 16,444 ; 17,628, re¬issued as 505; 18,910, dated January 10th, 1857 ; June 23d, 1857; November 3d, 1857; and December 22d, 1857, respectively. This association was composed of the Cambria Iron Company, E. B. Ward, Park Brothers & Co., Lyon, Shorb & Co., Z. S. Durfee, and, later, Chouteau, Harrison & Valle joined the combination. Not satisfied with possessing the control of the Kelly patent, they sent Mr. Z. S. Durfee to England, to secure for this country Mushet&apos;s patent on recarburization, No. 17,389, dated May 26th, 1857, the same having been taken out in England on September 22d, 1856. In this Mr. Durfee was successful. Previous to the application of William Kelly for a patent, Henry Bessemer, of England, had taken out patents dated February 12th, 1856, and August 25th, 1856, in this country. Kelly claimed priority in the discovery of the principles of the process, and the Patent-office allowed his claim by granting him his patents. In the autumn of 1862 Mr. Alexander L. Holley, while in England, was impressed with the importance of Mr. Bessemer&apos;s inven¬tion, and so fully foresaw its future, that, upon his return to the United States, he induced Messrs. John A. Griswold and John F. Winslow, of Troy, New York, to join him in endeavoring to possess Bessemer&apos;s American patents. Mr. Holley returned to England in

"INTRODUCTION In the course of Bureau of Mines investigations of iron ores near Scappoose, Columbia County, Oreg. during 1942, occurrences of laterite were noted in road cuts and outcrops at many localities in the county. In 1944, the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries completed a preliminary examination of alumina-iron-bearing laterite occurrences in Washington County north of Hillsboro, Oreg.3/ Their report suggested that the lateritic material might be amenable to treatment by the Pederson process for the commercial production of iron and alumina. In order to determine the extent and character of some of the reported lateritic occurrences, the Bureau conducted preliminary explorations in Columbia County near St. Helens, Oreg., from January through June 1945. Almost simultaneously the Alcoa Mining Co. began to explore nearby areas. Their work was continued and expanded after the Bureau's work had been discontinued. This report presents the data obtained from the exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral re¬sources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Coke breeze consists of the smaller particles of coke formed by handling coke on and after removal from the ovens. Its value as F, fuel is less than that of the larger pieces, both because the smaller pieces contain more ash and therefore have a lower calorific value, and because a greater draft is required to burn it.The tests described below show its value as a fuel when mixed with bituminous coal and burned in a hand fired boiler of a size considerably greater than that used in an ordinary house. The results of these tests, however, can be used to give a fairly good indication of the value of coke breeze when burned with bituminous coal in a domestic furnace.All who fire a domestic furnace know that for only a comparatively short part of the day, and then only on a few days, is it necessary to open fully the ash, pit door and stack damper to get the required rate of combustion in the average furnace in the average house. It will be practical, therefore, during the greater part of the heating season, to fire coke breeze with the coal and use more of the available draftsFor domestic heating the coke breeze should be stored separately, and used when the draft is sufficient to burn it in mixture with bituminous coal, at the rate required to warm the house.Purpose of tests: The tests were carried out at the request of the Chamber of Commerce of Pittsburgh, Pa., in order to determine the steaming value of coke breeze as a fuel when mired with Pittsburgh coal and fired by hand, and to see whether the mixture when burnt would give off an objectionable quantity of make.

The Cummings Complex consists of three superposed sills, exhibiting a differentiation pattern: the lowest sill being the most basic and the highest sill, the most acid. Each sill is also characterized by an internal petrographic and geochemical variation which is evidence of differentiation due to fractional crystallization. The REE concentrations in the different units of the complex indicates that the three sills are comagmatic. The interpretation of these results permits the formulation of an emplacement model not previously proposed for this complex.

PT Freeport Indonesia is a block cave mine that now utilizes an advanced undercut method to set up the min in the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). In this method a slice of rock (undercut) is broken such that it sits on top of the drawbell level. The drawbells are developed to channel the broken ore into the extraction level and to enable the caving orebody to be drawn out in an even and controlled manner. These drawbells are difficult to form due to the small amount of void that can be developed in the low strength rock before firing. Starting with two rises of 2m square, the void ratio for the entire drawbell around 6%, which would normally result in a frozen and unproductive blast. Orica -Mining Services have worked with PT Freeport in a collaborative effort to find a solution to the mining problem. With excellent control of timing of the blasting it is possible to get fluid flow of blasted rock out of the draw points such that more void can be made available for blasting the remaining parts of the drawbell. The i-konTM electronic blasting system gives the exacting control of timing within the blast to achieve this Dynamic Void Generation (DVG). The solution stops the need to charge close to brows in the drawbells and reduces the cost and time related to developing initial blast voidage. This paper identifies the results of the trials including design, photographic evidence and vibration analysis. The flexibility and accurate timing of this electronic blasting system has enabled single hole initiation rather than 4 or more holes being initiated together, thereby reducing the damaging vibrations to the extraction level.

"Coal burst represented a major hazard for some U.S. mining operations. This paper provides an historical review of the coal burst hazards, identifies the fundamental geological factors associated with these events, and discusses mechanisms that can be used to avoid their occurrences. Coal burst are not common in most underground mines. Their occurrence almost always has such dramatic consequences to a mining operation that changes in practice are required. Fundamental factors influencing coal burst events include strong strata, abnormal strata caving, elevated stresses, critical size pillars and the lack of sufficiently sized barrier pillars during extraction. These factors interact to produce excessive stress, seismic shock and loss of confinement mechanisms. Over the 90 years of dealing with these hazards, many novel prevention controls have been developed including novel mine designs and extraction sequences, most of which are site specific in their application. Without an accurate assessment of the fundamental factors that influence coal burst and knowledge of their mechanisms of occurrence, control techniques may be misapplied and risk inadequately mitigated. INTRODUCTIONCoal burst1are violent failures of ribs, roof or floor in underground mines. They are known to occur in complex ways and often under unique sets of conditions. This has made them extremely difficult to anticipate and control. Assessing coal burst risk requires engineers, managers, and safety professionals to recognize the fundamental factors responsible for these events. This helps practitioners recognize the hazard potential and understand the context in which various controls and barriers should be used. Only then can coal burst events be anticipated andappropriate mitigation techniques deployed.Over the last 90 years, a few coal burst events have been anticipated but most have eluded prediction. The authors examined the historical record (Appendix A) and determined that an inadequate understanding of the initiating geologic factors and their associated mechanisms of occurrence have contributed to the poor predictive capability. The historic record also indicates that control techniques have typically been site specific in their application."

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.

Preliminary Bureau of Mines studies of mafic igneous rocks collected from the Rabbit Creek area, northwestern Alaska, indicated concentrations of platinum (412 to 1,406 ppb) and palladium (343 to 892 ppb) in five of eight samples analyzed. The samples represent boulders and cobbles of mafic/ultramafic rocks from this locality. They are not from outcrop. Petrologically, (on the hand specimen scale) the samples are crudely to well-layered and are troctolitic ± gabbroie in character, with primary igneous mafic minerals strongly altered. Small patches of interstitial sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and covellite are associated with these altered zones and elsewhere through the specimens. Copper values ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 pct in samples analyzed semiquantitatively; nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents are low. Chemical, mine alogic, and petrographic relationships suggest that the rocks of similar character outcropping in northwestern Alaska could also be considered as prospective for- concentrations or platinum, palladium, and copper.

ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.
