Sixteen executives, technicians and operative personnel from the French mining industry, now touring mining operations in the U.S., will wind up their visit to this country at the AIME Annual Meeting. Traveling under ECA auspices, they will be in Denver on Feb. 5, Salt Lake City, Feb. 8 to 13, Bonne Terre on Feb. 16. Four of the group are engaged in bauxite mining, nine in lead and zinc, two in pyrites mining. All are interested in American mining equipment and methods, and hope to contact manufacturers' representatives in the various areas they visit. A $600,000 manganese pilot plant is expected to be put into operation by Sept. 1, by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev. S. R. Zimmerly, chief of the Bureau's metallurgical div. for the region, recently completed the mill design and flow sheet; and the Bureau is awaiting steel priorities before building. Ore from the Artillery Peak area, 60 miles south-west of Kingman, Ariz., will be used in the mill. Construction will be handled by Rex Lloyd of Boulder City.

In the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1,2 results in inadequate beneficiation. Investigation of Flotation Methods Flotation has been used in 'Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate. 3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P2O5 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. THE electrolytic separation of silver and gold has been practiced by the refineries in the United States for a good many years; and probably because of frequent visiting between officials of plants and the consequent exchange of views, operations in the various silver and gold refineries are very similar. We find, for instance, they practically all use electrolytes of approximately the same composition, which, no doubt, is more the result of experience than of studies of electrolytes. At the new electrolytic parting plant of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., East Chicago, Ind., considerable attention has been given to the, composition of electrolytes, especially to their conductivity and their effect on the character of the silver deposit. We are not aware that anything has been recently published on this subject and are, therefore, presenting such data as we have with the idea that, although it will not be wholly new, it may stimulate interest in the subject. EFFECT OF COPPER CONTENT ON CONDUCTIVITY The first work, was to determine the specific conductivity of silver nitrate and copper nitrate solution. Concentrated solutions of silver nitrate and copper nitrate were prepared by dissolving analyzed chemically-pure salts in distilled water, and determining the silver and copper in each. Definite amounts of the concentrated solutions were taken, mixed and diluted to a definite volume. The silver and the copper were determined in each of these solutions and the conductivity was, then determined. The plotted results are shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The effect of increasing quantities of silver and, copper is readily seen. With the scarcity of fresh potable water on mining sites, particularly those in arid and remote regions, the use of sea water is being contemplated and actually used at a number of mineral concentrators worldwide. The use of sea water, with its associated high dissolved solids content and ionic strength will affect all aspects of processing (e.g. frothing and froth stability, buffering capacity for pH control, solubility of minerals and corrosion of media and equipment). Selective depression of pyrite is more difficult in sea water due to the increased lime addition to achieve a high pH. This results in a reduction in molybdenite recovery. The use of grinding media with various chromium contents and its effect on subsequent Cu and Mo flotation has been investigated in the current study, with both grinding and flotation testing conducted in artificial sea water. Pulp chemistry (pH, Eh and DO) have been logged during grinding, and flotation testing was conducted on subsequent slurries. The flotation results show that the system is remarkably robust and able to cope with wide ranges of pulp chemistry parameters. Through-hole copper plating is performed to make a multi-layer printed circuit board. The through hole plating is first carried out by Pd catalyst treatment, followed by copper non-electric plating. The amount of Pd catalyst used in one plant is about 0.25-2 m3/month (8 g/dm3 PdCl2 base) depending on the plant scale, and the cost of the catalyst reaches 17,000¬I35,000 US$/month. In this study, the flow and material balance of a Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process was investigated. About 60% of Pd catalyst adheres on the through-hole and other part of setup, while 25% is released into the washing liquor. Pd in the washing liquor should be collected by a suitable method like a pressure filtration using diatomite. The material balance of Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process and the recovery method of Pd from waste solution containing Pd catalyst was investigated.

In today?s emerging economy, pooling resources is a growing trend to reduce overall system costs. Two important resources of every maintenance department are repair shops and spare parts. In this work, we consider a system consisting of mine drills at multiple areas in a mine. In each area, a number of identical drills are operational. When a failure occurs, the defective component should be repaired in a designated repair shop. The failed component can be replaced immediately if a spare part is available. Otherwise, the drill is down until a component is repaired and put back into service. In this paper, the effect of pooling resources is examined, and the conditions under which it is beneficial to pool the resources are investigated. In addition, determining the optimal number of stand-by units, equipment or spare parts, in each case is of interest.

The United States Bureau of Reclamation is constructing the $200 million Navajo Indian Irrigation Project to irrigate 110,000 acres of land on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northwestern New Mexico. Water from the San Juan River is impounded by Navajo Dam and will be conducted for 26 miles along a series of tunnels and canals to the area to be irrigated. Tunnel No. 3 is the third in a series of six tunnels along the route. Bids for construction of Tunnel No. 3 were received by the Bureau of Reclamation in September, 1970. Fluor Utah was low bidder at $8.7 million. Ten of the 12 bids were based on excavation by tunnel boring machine. The consulting firm of A. A. Mathews, Inc., was retained by the contractor to advise on geologic and rock mechanics conditions after support problems developed in the tunnel. Tunnel No. 3 is 15,264 feet long, has an 18 foot lined diameter, rises approximately one-half inch per 100 feet in the direction being excavated, and is 6,000 feet above sea level. There is one short curve in the alignment. Minimum concrete thickness is 12 inches with eight inches from 'A' to 'B' line making a pay diameter of 21 feet, 4 inches. The tunnel is supported with rock bolts and steel pans. Mole excavation began on May 13, 1971 from a blasted starting chamber. After 46 feet were excavated the mole was shut down and the trailing muck handling equipment was pulled into place. After advancing 1,700 feet in 34 days, unanticipated ground water conditions and ground support problems were encountered slowing moling so that the next 1,000 feet of advance consumed 97 days until December

"Some early experiences of a Cooper Union Chemical Engineer on the Manhattan project and his latest studies on CO2 Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Technologies are presented. Mitigating Global Greenhouse effect while maintaining a fossil fuel economy, requires improving the efficiency of conversion and utilization of fossil fuels, use of high hydrogen content fossil fuels, decarbonization of fossil fuels and sequestration of carbon and CO2 applied to all energy consuming sectors of the economy including electric power generation, materials production, transportation and industrial domestic heating. Decarbonization means removal of carbon as C or CO2 either before or after fossil fuel utilization and sequestration means long term disposal of C or CO2. The review will cover the principles of removal and recovery from power plant, stacks, the oceanographic and geological disposal of CO2 and the conversion of CO2 to gaseous and liquid transportation fuels. The global economic aspects of CO2 mitigation technologies are touched upon.IntroductionThis is an odyssey of a chemical engineer. TWELVE years ago, a meeting of coal-mine operators, mining engineers, oil and gas operators, Bureau of Mines engineers, geologists and state mine inspectors took place in Pittsburgh, Pa. for the purpose of discussing, and solving if possible, the problems in connection with the drilling of oil and gas wells through or near coal mines and through the future coal reserves. Proposed regulations were drafted and presented at that meeting by 0. P. Hood and A. G. Heggem of the Bureau of Mines.1There was considerable discussion of the various articles, practically all of which appear in Bulletin 65, but unfortunately the interest aroused at that meeting was short lived. Practically none of the important coal-, producing states gave the matter the consideration it should have received at that time. REASONS FOR AGAIN RAISING THE QUESTION Notwithstanding the marked progress in, safety work, coal mines still have an unenviable reputation for mine explosions. Our mining laws have become stricter and the enforcement, especially in Pennsylvania, more sternly carried out, but what good will come from a rigid carrying out of the mining laws if some source of danger exists all around the mines, over which the operators have no control? It is hardly necessary to recite all the cases of natural-gas explosions published in Bulletin 65, but with some of them I am especially familiar. In 1912, while making one of my usual Sunday visits to the Miners' Hospital, at Fairmont, W. Va., my attention was called to a patient in a horribly burned condition. He was swathed in bandages so that no part of his face and hands were visible. He had not then been informed that his two sons, mere boys, had died of the burns they had received in the same accident. This explosion was due to natural gas leaking into a country mine at Peora, Harrison Co., W. Va.

Laboratory and small-scale continuous pilot-plant investigations made at the Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that the copper segregation process is applicable to the treatment of oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores regardless of the gangue constituents. The process comprises heating the ore to a temperature of 750° C. with small quantities- of sodim chloride and coke to produce metallic copper, which then is recovered by flotation. Tests were made on' 23 copper ores of different types containing 0.8 to 5 percent Cu, .The copper recoveries ranged from 73 to 96 percent in concentrates assaying 10 to 62 percent Cu, depending on the grade and type of ore, The direct operating cost for a 1,000-ton-per-day furnace and flotation plant is estimated at about- $3 per ton of ore.

An existing mining company plans to extend their surface coal mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accounting for the site show an overall NP:MPA ratio of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to? be mined. If traditional dragline mining methods were used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. In order to prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using Truck/Shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, a mine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil in order to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Mining of this site should therefore not result in the formation of AMD.

I have some general comments on optimizing profitability based on working in heap leach operations in tropical environments. Many of my planned comments this morning have been stated earlier in the Conference. I get the opportunity to say only a few words, and follow up on some specific comments and concerns. In normal operations, stack the ore higher, where possible. The surface area of the stacked ore controls the total solution volume that can be sprayed on the pad at a specific time period. With higher lifts, solution will contact more ore particles as it percolate through the lift, and therefore the solution grade flowing through the base will be increased, whether it is freshly stacked or almost completely leached ore. This also allows more tonnage to be stacked per lift on the pad, decreasing conveyor movement and downtime. Increasing from 6 to 8 meter (20 to 26 feet) lifts have worked successfully, and some mines are using 10 meter (33 feet) lifts in 10,000-15,000 dmtpd plants. The same concept will work with smaller plants, but initial 6 meter lifts should be used until the start-up period has shown the leaching is working as planned. As the stacked ore lifts get higher, the solution flowing through the highest lift is diluted by solution retained in the lower ones. Eventually no real increase is noted from putting fresh ore in service, and gold production rate suffers. To address the dilution problem, an HDPE liner should be installed between each 2 to 4 lifts, depending on each site specific lift height, recovery, % slump in the lift, recovery rates, and grade treated, among others. The surface of the previous lift should be leveled and sloped to control the effluent draining from the planned lift, then the liner is placed, including berms and discharge pipes. The intermediate HDPE liner does not need to be completely sealed as would be the case with the base liner, and can accept some solution penetrating into the lower lifts. A one-mm (40-mil) thickness liner can be used. This intermediate liner allows the upper lift(s) higher-grade effluent to report to the pad discharge point. This will maintain higher gold solution grades going to the ponds. The slopes of the previous lifts should not be covered with HDPE in this concept, and precipitation falling on the lower lift slopes and benches can be directed to barren or surge ponds.

"IntroductionMany bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety Programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania.Story of the ExplosionAt about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No 2 butt left and parallel off 7o. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of Po. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 18 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air an explosion occurred.The helper dropped to the floor and was burned about the face and wrists. The machine operator ran down the entry and was more severely burned about the face, neck, and arms. He later developed pneumonia and died. Both men reached the door in the chute between No. 14 and No. 15 north. A pumper, who had felt the rush of air, found the men and helped them to walk outside."

EACH year we gather in this auditorium to honor the memory of a . distinguished American metallurgist and educator. I cannot bring to you reminiscences of Prof. Henry Marion Howe as other lecturers have done. It was not my good fortune to enjoy the privilege of studying and ,working under his direction. As I have reflected on the published works of Professor Howe, it has seemed to me that his mind was trained on the nature of metals and on the mechanism which produced known but unexplained effects. He was interested in controlling and regulating the causes so as to produce specific effects, useful in serving mankind. I recall an afternoon in May, 1925, when, at the invitation of Mrs. Howe, I visited his former home, Green Peace at Bedford Hills, N. Y. The purpose of my visit was to receive at the hands of the widow -an engraving of Professor Howe, a reproduction of a painting from life. Mrs. Howe showed me his study. The walls of this large attractive room, brilliantly illuminated by the spring sunshine, were literally covered with the scrolls of honors and of decorations which had been conferred on Professor Howe by governments, academies, universities, societies and. institutions the world over. As we walked about the room, she pointed out the significance of each honor and recited a few details of each occasion. I sensed the pride with which Mrs. Howe, then in the late autumn of her life, told me of her husbands' achievements, of his struggles, of his disappointments and of his successes. There was a surprisingly familiar note in the recital to which I was listening. I have found the same theme running as a disconnected thread through the written accounts of the lives of most men of science. We then went to the drawing room to chat for a few minutes before I said my farewells. As we seated ourselves, Mrs. Howe turned to me and asked: "Mr. Lucas, what of this great microscope of yours? Cannot it be applied to the study of disease? What a great blessing it would be if it could be directed to relieve the suffering of mankind."

The treatment of oxidized residues of zinc with high iron content continues to present a technical challenge in both the steel and zinc industries. Two main problems are commonly identified and include high treatment costs and environmental concerns about contaminated, iron-bearing residuals. A new approach to this problem is described in which selective separation of the iron and zinc into salable products may be potentially feasible. The waste material is first leached to give a solution having an approximate concentration of 110 g/l Zn, 15 g/1 Fe and 40 g/1 H2SO4 and other impurities such as Pb, Cd, Cu and Sb. A suitable organic, such as D2EHPA, is used to load the majority of the iron. The aqueous phase is then acceptable for zinc electrowinning after standard solution purification. The novel step in the flow sheet is the efficient recovery of the ferric iron from the organic solvent using a solid metal to reduce the iron to the ferrous state. The Fe+2 is easily stripped into an aqueous phase in a relatively pure form, suitable for use in water treatment. Process parameters and possible flow sheet designs are described and discussed.

"INTRODUCTION As part of the program of investigating possible domestic sources of manganese, ore-dressing studies were conducted at Salt Lake City, Utah, on five samples of manganese oxide ore obtained by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the Havasu Lake District, California and Arizona.Two lots of radically different ores were procured from the Arizona Manganese claims 30 miles above Parker Dam, Mohave County, Ariz. One of the original 11 claims has been flooded by Havasu Lake, formed by Parker Dam. The claims are owned by R. H. Thompson, Parker Lumber Co., Parker, Ariz. The 2-ton lot of high-grade ""TA"" ore represented ore occurring as pyrolusite and psilomelane accompanied by a black calcite gangue in lenses along a series of fault planes in granite. A half-ton lot of low-grade ""TB"" ore was taken from a large lense of reddish iron-bearing material outcropping on another section of the property.A 2-ton lot of ore was taken from the Jones property, 8-1/2 miles southwest of Powell, Mohave County, Ariz. At the time of the investigation, the property was leased by J. H. Jones, of Oatman, Arix., from the owners, the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad Co. The ore body was described as a re¬placement in a sandstone formation in a region that has been faulted extensively."
