Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only. "THE CHALLENGE The 14km long, Arlbergtunnel, closed for public traffic during summer 2015, receiving a comprehensive and substantial renovation from 2015 to 2017. The main works discussed here, carried out during 2015, comprise 37 drill and blast SEM/NATM emergency escape tunnels from road level to the ventilation duct plenum have to be constructed as well as eight additional lay-by niches and three transformer tunnels. This presentation comprises the construction ventilation design, designed according to national regulations, suitable for 150 employees working 24/7 simultaneously at more than 40 single working sites lined up along the tunnel. The ventilation-system chosen was utilising two existing shafts for intake/discharge and a cross passage to surface, to handle a total fan power of 1.600kW. DESCRIPTION OF RENOVATION WORKS Linking Tyrol and Vorarlberg, two Federal States of Austria, the Arlbergtunnel is a single tube two-way road tunnel with vent duct plenum, constructed in the mid-1970s. According to latest EU legislation, additional escape exits have become obligatory. The existing seven cross passage links to the adjacent Arlberg Railway Tunnel, with average spacing of about 1.500m constructed in 2007, an additional upgrade to shorter escape spaces of approx. 400m was now required to comply with the updated legislation. Additional transformer tunnels, lay-by niches and small niches for emergency maintenance use, cleaning and other purposes, as well as a the installation of a new fire main in the invert, coupled with the simultaneous replacement of virtually the entire power and signaling cables, generated several dozen small and large single sites distributed along the 14km of tunnel.Purpose of the 37 walkable emergency escape tunnels is to reach the “upper deck” of the Arlbergtunnel, the vent duct plenum. These have an 180deg curve in plan, inclined at 10% and approx. 60m (65yd) long tunnels, excavated using drill and blast method starting from road level and working upwards to the level of an “intermediate soffit”, the vent duct plenum in the crown of the tunnel. The vent duct plenum is separated into a fresh air part and an exhaust air part, shown in Figure 1. The escape tunnels end with a pressure door in the fresh air section of the ventilation duct plenum. From there illuminated signs show the shortest escape route to the safe area between the road tunnel and the railway tunnel, as shown in Figure 2."

During the last decade, there haven't been any great innovations in the design features of a copper concentrator. What has worked well in the past continues to work well, so that major breakthroughs have been minimal. Conservatism in the ranks also plays an important part. As a copper concentrator is not designed and built everyday, Davy was elated to have an important part in this project. This is the story of the design of the oracle Ridge Project located north of Tucson on the back of Mt. Lemmon at an elevation of 5,900 feet on the N.E. slope of the Catalinas. The Oracle Ridge property, formerly known as the Control Mine, is owned by Oracle Ridge Mining Partners, a joint venture between Continental Materials Corp. of Chicago and Union Miniere of Brussels, Belgium; both or¬ganizations specializing in the non-ferrous metal industry.

The mining and metallurgical laboratory, as we understand the term in this country, is a place .in which mechanical and chemical working-tests are made on ores, fuels and furnacematerials. It is of quite recent origin. The first laboratory of this kind to be used in connection with teaching was put into operation in 1871 at the Massachusetts Institute of Techilo1ogy. † The idea had already existed in the mind of President W. B. Rogers when he wrote, in 1864, his pamphlet 'on " The Scope and Plan of the School of Industrial Science of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;" but several years elapsed, and an extended visit to the mines and mills of Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California was required before this idea could take a form adapted to the purposes of original research as well as of instruction. The laboratory was given from the first into the charge of Prof. R. H. Richards, who, by improving its methods and enlarging its scope, has brought it to the position which it occupies to-day as the leading representative of its class. Today road construction sites utilize more and more information modeling in design phases as well as model based 3-D machine control systems in site operations. For main contractor, the management and control of all the site operations is a demanding task including also many challenges created by continuously developing new technology. In the paper, the main requirements for successful dynamic site management are introduced. The dynamic management means real-time possibilities for information acquiring, transfer and further utilization of the information in the management. An integration model to expand the current way of management and the utilization of present 3-D machine control systems is introduced. Different practical test results using two new different dynamic management systems are presented and evaluated. The first experiments and the results have been provided using the prototype system developed in a research project called DigiINFRA by the University of Oulu and Technical Research Center of Finland. Also, there have been tested a new commercial management system developed recently in Finland. In the conclusion, an expectation for the next generation for more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded.

A new analytical formula for predicting ground vibrations induced by blasting is proposed. One factor accounts for geometrical spreading. One factor corresponds to inelastic attenuation. The geometrical spreading function is based on likely source geometries, idealized as either square-root, cube-root or site-specific scaling, and on the propagation characteristics of predominant wave types. The inelastic attenuation is approximated by an exponential function. The empirical constants in these functions are backcalculated from field measurements. Regression analysis has been performed on twenty-three sets of measured data in order to determine the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method. In many cases, the proposed method gives better correlation than the conventional method. In most of the remaining cases, there was no difference between the two methods. Best-fit lines given by the proposed method fit the data trend very well, especially at large scaled distances. At large distances the proposed method gives a prediction much closer to the actual values than the conventional methods. The statistical analysis shows not much difference between square-root, cube-root or site-specific scalings.

The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."

Outputs from industrial activities planned in the Riley Ridge natural gas project are modeled to determine the potential locations of air pollution impacts on the Bridger and Fitzpatrick Wildernesses in Wyoming. The nature of modeling, especially with regard to its realism, is discussed. Alpine lakes which, along with their watersheds, have minimal buffering capacity are being studied because of their sensitivity to acidic deposition from proposed new air pollution sources. A hypothesis which relates a source's emissions to deposition and lake chemistry in a worst-case sense is presented. Research designed to test the hypothesis and reduce uncertainties is outlined and progress reviewed. Focus is placed on the meteorological transport and atmospheric deposition parameterization contained in the hypothesis.

As part of the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines Health and Safety Research Program, Walter C. McCrone Associates, Incorporated has examined 71 samples of airborne mine dusts using the techniques of x-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and light microscopy. This report details the procedures which were used in this work and documents the results which were obtained.

Halide media are considered as suitable alternatives to cyanide for extracting gold and have received much attention lately. The extraction of gold by iodide-iodine mixture has been patented and briefly studied without much attention given to the fundamental aspects of this process. This paper reports recent studies on the kinetics of gold extraction in iodide media, using hypochlorite, iodine and hydrogen peroxide oxidants. The kinetics of dissolution was found to be dependent on the solution pH, reagent concentration and most importantly the iodide- oxidant molar ratio. Without proper control, the gold surface can be passivated due to the formation of solid products. Thermodynamic modelling was carried out to determine the equilibria governing the dissolution process. The formation of AuI solid was also identified as a possible product during the dissolution.

"Material substitution occurs continuously in response to competitive and economic pressures. Technical development can accelerate or slow substitution by improving the performance of the invading or defending material. The choices are seldom simple and have to be made in the context of continuous commercial change.The development and commercialization of a new aluminum material is examined. The material has been introduced into· several different markets, so it is possible to compare and contrast the degree of success obtained in each.IntroductionAluminum-based materials have been in use for over one hundred years and , therefore, the development of a new family of alloys is rare. In the early 1970s, Dr. L.R. Morris and his coworkers at Alcan' s Kingston Research Centre started work on what was, at the time, something of a scientific curiosity-a family of alloys strengthened by an unusual mechanism.This paper deals with the development and commercialization of what became known as the Alcan 255 alloys"". These alloys have found uses in several markets, usually as improved substitutes for existing materials. Forecasting the usefulness of a substitute material in an existing marketplace is difficult, in part, because even material users are seldom able to specify precisely their requirements. This uncertainty can cause the failure of some substitutions but can also lead to opportunities which were not initially obvious.Technical BackgroundPure aluminum is a soft, weak material. It can be strengthened by the addition of various alloying elements and by work hardening. Alloying elements usually act by forming solid solutions which are stronger than the pure metal or by precipitating during heat treating or aging and so preventing the easy movement of dislocations during deformation. Elements which can perform either role had been investigated for decades and were thought to offer little chance of technical breakthrough in 1970. An outgrowth of the then new and exciting research on directional solidification seemed, however, to offer such promise.Some aluminum-iran-manganese alloys will solidify under certain conditions as 'coupled growth' eutectics (Figs. I and 2). The microstructure shows one phase growing as long rods through the other. This is an uncommon structure and it was investigated to see if it had equally unusual properties. On deformation by rolling the rods were broken up into small equiaxed , evenly-spaced particles (Fig. 3). Materials with this structure were found to be stronger than other alloys with similar amounts of alloying addition, and to resist thermal softening remarkably well. This combination of properties was thought initially to be due directly to the particles by a dispersion strengthening mechanism, but later this was found not to be strictly true."

"Gas dispersion properties of sodium salts of 6, 12 and 18-carbon fatty acids (hexanoic, lauric and oleic acid) were investigated as a function of pH. A strong effect of pH was observed on gas dispersion properties of fatty acids. At high pH for 12 and 18 carbon fatty acids, at which these surfactants formed a true solution, the gas dispersion properties were similar to those of MIBC. In the case of sodium hexanoate, which has a much higher solubility than the longer chain fatty acids and therefore does not form precipitates, the gas dispersion properties of this surfactant were strongly enhanced in the acidic pH range, where hexanoic acid was fully associated. This result is an indication that undissociated hexanoic acid is much more surface-active than anionic hexanoate. Only a small effect of the surfactant chain length on gas dispersion properties of the tested reagents was observed. The measured critical coalescence concentration (CCC95) values increase slightly by decreasing chain length and range from 5.8 x 10-5 mol/L (17.7 mg/L) for sodium oleate to 7.2 x 10-5 mol/L (16 mg/L) for sodium laurate at pH 10 and 1.9 x 10-4 mol/L (26 mg/L) for sodium hexanoate at pH 3.7. These are compared to CCC95 of MIBC, which is measured to be 8 x 10-5 mol/L (8 mg/L). The soluble molecular species were recognized as the most effective species in preventing bubble coalescence."

Mineral commimition is an important and expensive industrial process and modern comminution circuits are complex There is considerable economic incentive to optimize circuit design and performance and to operate circuits at maximum efficiency, and these aims may be achieved by setting up mathematical models of the units in a circuit on a digits, computer and studying the behavior of simulated circuits. Models of grinding mills and cyclone classifiers which may be used for this purpose are discussed. The use of these models for design and optimization is discussed and particular mention is made of the factors which are important in circuit control. "We model the shale response to the large deformations associated with salt bodies, and we identify the implications of the stress changes for hydrocarbon exploration. We employ both the static and evolutionary approach, and show that while the static one can model actual geologic geometries, only the evolutionary approach can provide a detailed description of the stress history of shales, which is essential for predicting stress, porosity, and pore pressure and, more generally, for understanding Earth processes related to salt-hydrocarbon systems.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last two decades, understanding the stress, material behavior, and pore pressure in shales around salt bodies has become increasingly important. The energy industry routinely drills near salt (Beltrão, Sombra, Lage, Fagundes Netto, & Henriques, 2009; Meyer, Zarra, Rains, Meltz, & Hall, 2005; Seymour, Rae, Peden, & Ormston, 1993), because a significant number of hydrocarbon reservoirs around the world are found in layers dipping away from salt diapirs.Salt is a viscous material that cannot sustain deviatoric stresses. Under differential loading it flows, changes shape, and eventually relaxes to an isostatic stress state (Urai & Spiers, 2007). Therefore, emplacement of a salt body and its viscous relaxation process may cause significant deformation of the surrounding sediments, perturb their state of stress and create local overpressures (Dusseault, Maury, Sanfilippo, & Santarelli, 2004; Seymour et al., 1993). As a result, drilling near salt is particularly challenging, and problems leading to additional expense or even abandonment are common (Bradley, 1978; Dusseault et al., 2004; Meyer et al., 2005; Seymour et al., 1993; Willson et al., 2003).Historically, salt and the evolution of its cross section to the present day geometry have been studied using kinematic restorations (Rowan & Ratliff, 2012). This approach aims to explain the present geologic section through a sequence of plausible past sections; however, it does not model the constitutive response of the wall rocks, hence it cannot provide any prediction on their state of stress. Similarly, largestrain numerical studies (Albertz & Beaumont, 2010; Chemia, Schmeling, & Koyi, 2009; Goteti, Ings, & Beaumont, 2012; Gradmann, Beaumont, & Albertz, 2009) have focused on the rheological evolution of salt systems without modeling the geomechanical response of the sediments."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments for predicting materials' ease of combustion (smoldering onset, smoldering, flaming, and decomposition rates) by means of submicrometer smoke particle characteristics for the development of a simple test method. The experiments were carried out in an approximately 20-L furnace, with a 10-L/min airflow through the furnace for a 14-min duration, at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C. The variables studied as a function of time were the onset time of smoke particles, time and duration of maximum smoke particle generation, average concentration of smoke particles, and particles' average diameter, mass weight loss, and furnace temperatures. Results show that the onset time of smoke particles is predictive of materials' ease of smoldering, and the time of maximum smoke particle generation and its duration, coupled with mass weight loss, are predictive of materials' ease of smoldering and flaming (depending on the experimental temperatures), and decomposition rates.

A brief resume follows of some recent activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consultation with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections of bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior October 8, 1953, following further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers, and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. The inspectors were active in making prompt investigations of hazardous mines that had been closed by order of the Coal Mines Administrator to determine if enough improvements had been made to allow the mines to reopen. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines they found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority (under Executive Order 9728) was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Microscopic examinations of quenched (beta) 60:40 copper-zinc and quenched (beta) 74:26 copper-tin alloys have frequently disclosed long, thin parallel bands or markings within the polyhedral beta grains. Apparently, it has been accepted that these markings are mechanical twin bands, although there is no published account of experimental data that might tend to substantiate this belief for the copper-zinc system, and only meager evidence has been submitted for the copper-tin system. Johnsonl0 commented upon the markings he observed after deforming a quenched brass of 55.6 per cent copper and 44.4 per cent zinc. Clark's papers4 on the heat-treatment of Muntz metal contain many photomicrographs of markings in beta brass; these she referred to as Neumann bands (inasmuch as repolishing and re-etching failed to remove them) and stated that markings present in Muntz metal as quenched were the result of shock imparted during the polishing operation. Van Wert18 first suggested that these parallel markings in quenched beta brass (60:40) might be alpha precipitated along certain crystallographic planes of the matrix lattice. He showed that upon reheating the specimens to temperatures below 800" C., obvious precipitation of alpha within the large beta grains first occurred at the markings. In a discussion of this paper, Phillips stated (pp. 505-507) that in his opinion the markings observed by Van Wert were mechanical twins resulting from contraction strains produced during the quenching operation. In a study of segregate structures in beta copper-tin, Smith17 observed that in the quenched beta phase (containing 74.92 per cent Cu) parallel . bands or markings very similar to those in metastable beta brass could be

Research workers From the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives in Pittsburgh, Pa., on January 22, 1975, to discuss the results of research under the Bureau of Mines Noise Control Program. The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.
