The XVIth International Conference on Coal Mine Safety Research was divided into eight half-day technical sessions. In accord with the established practice of these conferences, at each session, presentation of the papers was followed by a discussion period. Questions and comments submitted in writing to the session chairman were answered or discussed by the authors of the relevant papers or by their representatives. These discussions were tape-recorded in the original language of the speaker and subsequently translated into English when necessary. Questions to which no answer was available at the time and a few comments that exceeded the scope of the session have been omitted.

A value for the enthalpy of formation of z2 of -3.14 i 0.21 kcal per g-atom has been measured by the technique of acid solution calorimetry. This result is in quite good agreement with two earlier determinations by tin solution calorimetry and by direct reaction caloriinetry, and averaging of values determined from the three independent calorimetric techniques gives enhanced precision and accuracy with AHh8 (CaMgZ) = - 3.15 i 0.05 kcal per g-atom. For comparison with experimental data, values for the enthalpies of formation of CaMgz, SrMgz, and BaMgz of -9.8, -7.9, and -2.8 kcal per g-atom were estimated from a calculation based on the LVigizer-Seitz approximation as modified by Raimes for polyvalent elements. While complete quantitative accord between these calculated talues and available experimental data is lacking, nonetheless numerical accord is better than might be expected and, more importantly, parallel numerical trends are observed between experimental and calculated vnlues. WITHIN the past decade the enthalpy of formation of CaMg, has been determined a) from measurement of magnesium vapor pressures over binary Ca-Mg alloys,' b) by solution calorimetry with liquid tin as the solvent,' c) from measurement of hydrogen vapor pressures over ternary alloys of calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen,3 and d) by direct reaction alorimetr. The value from tin solution calorimetry is the most precise and is probably the most reliable, and this value is within the quoted uncertainties of the other three experimental results. The overall agreement among the four independent investigations is quite good, particularly so when the diversity of techniques is noted. On the basis of this agreement, CaMgz was chosen as a test material to evaluate the operation of a newly constructed apparatus for the determination of enthalpies of formation of intermetallic phases by acid solution calorimetry. This was believed to be a severe test because of the high chemical reactivity of both calcium and magnesium which reactivity presumably accounts for the fact that an early determination5 of the enthalpies of formation of Ca-Mg alloys by acid solution calorimetry yielded values significantly more negative than the four recent determinations. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND MATERIALS Experimental Apparatus. The enthalpy of formation of CaMg, was determined by measuring the difference between the heat evolved when dissolving the metallic compound and the heat evolved when dissolving equivalent amounts of unreacted metallic elements in hydro- chloric acid. This was done differentially with an apparatus consisting of twin calorimeters which were constructed to be as nearly identical as possible. The advantage of differential calorimetry is that systematic errors arising from the individual calorimeter design tend to cancel. A schematic representation of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. A dead air space around both calorimeters was provided by a large, thermally insulated jacket. Each calorimeter consisted of a 2-liter Dewar flask which was completely enclosed in a copper container. Each Dewar contained 1600 g of 2.5hr HCl to act as the solvent, and thermal effects resulting from solvent evaporation were minimized by covering the acid with 50 g of mineral oil. There was no detectable reaction between the acid and the mineral oil. Equivalent amounts of mechanical energy were added to the calorimeters through twin stirring rods which were driven at the same rpm by a single motor with the intent of the stirring being to maintain thermal equilibrium throughout the solvent. To calibrate the heat capacities of the calorimeters, known amounts of electrical energy could be added by passing measured voltages and currents for known times through submerged heaters, approximately 20 ohms, which were wound noninductively from Manganin wire. A 6-v storage battery was used as a power source, and a dummy heater was used as an exercise circuit to allow the battery to stabilize at a constant electromotive force before energizing one or the other of the calorimetric heaters. A type K-2 potentiometer was used to measure the potential drop across an energized heater while the current was determined from the potential drop across an external standard resistor. This report deals with a portion of the research and development work in the field of synthesis gas purification, carried out by the Bureau of Mines at its Morgantown, W, Va., Station in cooperation with West Virginia University. The Bureau's work in connection with gas purification has been performed with the objective of finding effective, low-cost, processes for removing impurities from synthesis gas to protect the catalyst used in the Fischer-Tropsch process for production of liquid fuels. Synthesis gas used for the production of other chemicals, such as ammonia, alcohols, and methane, requires equally rigorous purification. Although present-day practice in the manufactured-gas industry does not require such a high degree of purification, there is increasing interest in the complete removal of sulfur compounds from city gas. Although the gas-purification work at Morgantown deals with several impurities, major effort has been devoted to organic sulfur compounds in gas; this paper represents a progress report on some of the more important studies in connection with those compounds. Because this is a progress report on the Bureau's experimental work, no attempt has been made to cover the work of others on the subject; references to the literature have been restricted to those bearing directly on the work described.

Five serial photos show the first second of the demolition of a 75 m high, reinforced concrete tower in the 23rd District of Vienna, Austria. The tower demolition with high explosives was necessary because a 175t excavator could not finalize the destruction with mechanical tools. All mechanical works in preparation of the blast, such as the borehole drilling, were done by civil companies under the responsibility of the contracted demolition company PRAJO. The blasting itself was planned and executed by the engineer corps of the Austrian Armed Forces, Sunday, May 26, 2013. Nearly 800 boreholes filled with more than 100 kg of military plastic explosives were initiated with about 1,600 Austin electric delay detonators in exactly 1,000 ms and 30 steps of delay. The 10,000 tons of reinforced concrete tower fell as planned without any damage to the environment. Photo 5. The rest of the detonators initiate the water pools filled with high explosives forming a bizarre white water front to fight the following strong development of dust. The first 1,000 milliseconds are over.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study of the measurement of the water and rock dust (RD) contents of synthetic mine-type coal dust (CD) mixtures using a commercial unit for measuring water content and several prototype radiometric units for measuring the RD content. The RD content ranged from 50 to 100 wt pct and the added water (AW) ranged from 0 to 15 wt pct. The total water (TW) content (intrinsic (IW) and AW) of a small dust sample could be readily measured automatically by essentially untrained personnel using a commercial unit. The RD content of a sample containing only IW could readily be measured by moderately trained personnel using several radiometric units. With gamma-ray devices, about 300 g of sample is needed. With the improved beta-ray device, about 25 g of sample is needed. With dry mine dust samples, the estimated RD error range for gamma-ray devices is 0.8 to 2.3 pct and 0.5 to 1.0 pct for beta-ray devices. However, the radiometric measurement of RD content was questionable if the dust mixture also contained AW or if it was uncertain whether the dust mixture contained AW.

Thin seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges are increased depending upon the presence of various external factors such as labor unions, Federal and state regulations, and market characteristics. This paper explores the turn-around situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Company (TMC), a medium-sized underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania, USA. Using a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations, and communications, coupled with an intensive upgrade/rebuild/replacement program for equipment and systems used at the mine, TMC has begun reversing its' cashflow position from negative to positive within two years.

New technology was adopted, efficiencies were enhanced, lean manufacturing concepts were brought in and a strong customer focus was developed. Today?s mills employ sophisticated instrumentation, computerized monitoring, on-line smart systems etc. driving processes that are producing at rates of many tons/minute. All this is not possible without judiciously using the latest available technologies in various fields and developing a more sophisticated work force. Prof. Sohn has been a pioneer in driving the concept of process engineering in process metallurgy. In this paper the focus is on some aspects of process engineering ? primarily process modeling - as applied to iron and steelmaking processes. Examples are shown to demonstrate how problems have been addressed. Some thoughts on future directions are presented.

The mining literature is replete with descriptions of methods and costs of operation at producing mines. To day the mine manager can find published information bearing upon almost any problem with which he may be faced. From this literature he can familiarize himself with methods employed by otter operators for coping with problems similar to his own, under more or less parallel conditions. Transaction of mining societies, publications of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, technical journals, and handbooks all afford valuable information dealing with operating methods and costs, Very little has been published, however, regarding methods and costs of equipping and developing new properties and bringing them to tae productive stage. There may be some question in the minds of many as to the value of papers on this subject, due to the great variety of conditions encountered. No two prospects are alike. Obviously, it is impossible to forecast what expenditure will be required to develop a mine from a raw prospect or even to predict whether the prospect can be developed into a productive mine.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. In many operations the use of less electrochemically reactive grinding media in the first grinding stage (for example, rod milling and high aspect ratio SAG milling) is rarely considered. Therefore, in reality a plant may inadvertently be using a 'mixed' media charge. That is, whilst employing inert grinding media during secondary grinding, electrochemically active forged steel grinding media may be used in the primary grinding stage. This paper discusses the impact of such a circuit on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a refractory gold ore. The Wiluna concentrator has two grinding circuits operating in parallel. Line 1 operates a single ball mill in closed circuit with cyclones, and utilises high chrome grinding media, while the second circuit (Line 2) consists of a rod mill (with forged steel rods) in series with a ball mill, which also utilises high chrome grinding media. The cyclone overflows from both circuits are combined to feed a sulfide flotation circuit. Pulp chemistry surveys were completed around both grinding circuits, and laboratory flotation tests were conducted on the cyclone overflows. The results demonstrate clearly that the rod mill/ball mill circuit operated at significantly lower Eh and dissolved oxygen values, while the percentage EDTA extractable iron was considerably higher, when compared to the single stage ball milling circuit. These variations in pulp chemistry had a marked negative impact on the laboratory rougher flotation response, and suggests that plant performance may be affected.

As these are factories, the number of visitors who could be accommodated was limited. As the opportunity seldom arises to learn something of this very large industry, there was great interest among members and many were disappointed in not being able to go. The Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act? of 1970 provided the driving force for the current Magma Smelter configuration. The historical and technical perspectives of those process developments are reviewed?. Innovations in procedures and equipment have allowed compliance with the requirements of the regulating authorities?. The wet scrubbing of converter gasses and the monitoring of converter operations by a controlling foreman are two of the major contributors? to these successes. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 have posed many new concerns? for all U.S. industry, including the few (seven) primary copper smelters remaining. Future concerns include tightening the sulfur dioxide ambient ?Standard from the current three-hour averaging period to one hour.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by The Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township-is given with the discussion covering that area.

"Selection of the optimum support system for underground openings such as tunnels is a complex process. In this paper a new approach, based on a combination of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and the Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), is introduced. For this purpose, the selection process is assumed to be a multi criteria decision-making problem. First different support systems using FLAC3D numerical code, based on technical safety and stability parameters of the tunnel are specified. Then taking economic and performance parameters as the decision criteria by using the combination of Al-IP, TOPSIS, and PROMETHEE the optimum support system is selected. As a real mine case study this approach is used in the main access entry to the C, coal scam of Tabas collieries. Results clearly demonstrate that the proposed support system selection method is more advantageous than other alternatives.INTROD CTIONGenerally, the support system for a tunnel is selected primarily with the aid of design engineers experience. In other words personal judgment instead of intellectual and scientific criteria is mostly the main basis (Oracc. 2005). However since various support systems can be applied in any particular situation, accurate selection of the optimum support method depends on the integration of many technical, economical and performance parameters, and also on the analysis of the intensity of influence by each of the criteria.In this paper an applicable approach for se lection of tunnel support systems based on Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) techniques including: Al IP (Orace et al.. 2009a; Saaty, 1980), TOPSIS (Hwang and Yoon, 1981: Yoon and Hwang, 1995), and PROMETHEE (Brans and Vincke. 1985; Brans and Mareschal. 1992) is introduced. As a field study, this approach was applied to tunnel C1 as one of the main entries in the Tabas coal mine which is the major collieries in the central pan of Iran (Hosseini, 2008).Due to the coal seam conditions coal is mined by mechanized longwall mining (Hosseini 2008). This method requires the 58 excavation of several entries some of which will be used for many years and even for the entire life of the mine (Peng, 2006). Therefore the selection of the support system in these entries is·very important in mining design."

Realizing the great importance and wide application of petroleum and its products for fuel,lighting and lubrication, and the absence of authentic and comprehensive information in the literature on the commercial value of American petroleums, the United States Geological Survey has for a number of years' been making analyses and other examinations of these oils and their products. In 1907 the technologic branch of the Survey began a study of certain economic problems having to do with the natural mineral oils. The prime object of the investigations was to determine the economic value of the petroleums and natural gases in the United States with special reference to the supplies in the public lands, and to ascertain how these resources could be utilized in the industries withleast waste and greatest efficiency. This work, which is now being conducted by the petroleum section of the Bureau of Mines under authority of the act of May 16, 1910, will include the collection at the wells and refineries of information as to the following details: Facilities for handling and storage at the wells. Facilities for transportation, whether by pipe line, rail, or water. Distance to the nearest port or center of industry and time necessary for delivery. Facilities for storage at such point of delivery. Suitability of the crude oil for fuel, or the treatment necessary to convert itmost economically into the best fuel. Best processes of refining or of converting the crude oil into its many products. The examination of these products. The utilization of the by-products and residues of the refineries. The collection of adequate and reliable samples, and the complete chemical and physical examination ofthese samples in the laboratory.

In 2018, the German Federal government decided to phase-out the energy production using coal-fired power plants and to terminate lignite mining completely by 2038 at the latest. This decision will impact approximately 60,000 jobs. It will have an enormous impact on the socioeconomic development especially in all German lignite mining regions. To avoid economic and political friction, it is of utmost importance to achieve a sustainable transition towards a post-mining era and to offer residents in the mining districts perspectives for a good future that include adequate job opportunities. In this context, the German government is providing massive structural aids early on. As previous closure experiences from the German hard coal mining industry have shown, it takes at least a generation to overcome the effects of a strategic closing decision of this magnitude. Therefore, the planned closure process appears to be a long time at first glance. In fact, however, it is not.

"Delivery of all volume of mined mass on the terrestrial surface results not only in irrational power expenses on moving of huge volumes of dead rock as a part of initial raw materials (especially vertically) on long distances, but also necessities of storing tailings in open-air. Thus, in bowels of earth, huge volumes of the developed space are formed. However, the nature doesn't suffer emptiness. As consequence, through the process of underground mining works, in earth bowels starts intensive development of rocks dislocation processes involving subsidence of terrestrial surface, and with it, begins irreparable damage every objects which are on that territory. Highly effective new methods of underground concentration of the various minerals, which deliveries of only target component on terrestrial surface integrally connected with transport process in stream and subsequent deliveries to destination in continuous mode by the long distance hydrotransport, allow not only to eliminate a construction of concentrating factories on the surface, but also storing of tailings of concentration process on open-air preventing dislocation of rocks, thanks to operative placing tails in the underground developed space. Surely, the main problem in the development of such gravity dressing technology is the problem of finding the optimal formula for the heavy liquid that will fill such system in close connection with the procedure of its full regeneration. The requirements for such liquid are being non-toxic and cheap. This question was solved successfully."

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of close-range photogrammetry and subsequent stereo digitizing to obtain data from rock fracture roughness profiles. The photogrammetric process yielded results that were acceptable but somewhat inferior to those obtained by a mechanical profilometer. On the basis of this study, further pursuit of photogrammetry as a data collection method in mining is proposed. Fractal geometry was investigated as a means of measuring the roughness of rock fracture profiles. Four fractal algorithms were used: divider method, modified divider method, box method, and spectral method. A comparison of the methods gave ambiguous results. Brown's modified divider method provided the best means of obtaining the fractal dimension. Shear strength estimates were obtained using the parameters of the modified divider method and Myers' Z2 measure. Because of differences in results when comparing the different ways of obtaining the fractal dimension, future users of fractals in studies of rock fractures are advised to cross-check their results carefully.

Electrochemical and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) methods were used to investigate the dissolution rate of gold in a solution similar to those utilized by the Outokumpu HydroCopper® process. The measurements were conducted in an electrolyte solution where [NaCl] = 2.8-280 g/L, pH = 1-2.5, [Cu2+] = 0-30 g/L and T = 70-95°C. According to these measurements, the solution flow has the greatest impact on the dissolution rate of gold in the HydroCopper® process. Under adequately acidic conditions (pH < 3), the dissolution rate of gold increases with increasing cupric concentration, increasing chloride concentration and increasing temperature. The results and trends observed compared well with the literature.
