Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. PRODUCERS of alloy steels recognize the importance of chemical composition in rela-tion to the hot-working properties and the typical surface defects found in their prod-uct. Each analysis of steel has its own peculiar characteristics. Under conditions of standard mill practice each analysis is susceptible to certain types of defects. Mill practice must be varied to obtain the best combination of surface and internal quality in the product. Chemical composition influences the cast structure and crystallization character-istics of the ingot. It also determines the rate of heating and cooling, the plastic hot-working range, and the phase structure of the steel at various temperatures as well as the tendency toward scale formation and decarburization, This paper endeavors to emphasize the manner in which chemical composition affects the various properties of steel, and to indicate the relative impor-tance of these factors in relation to the hot-working properties and surface charac-teristics of killed steel. The influence of chemical composition may be outlined as follows: I. Effect on the cast structure of steel, including: A. State of deoxidation, and type of inclusions. B. Gas content of steel. C. Freezing point and melting point of steel.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. Non-isothermal kinetics studies of the reduction phenomenon of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust generated in stainless steelmaking have been carried out. The dust was mixed with carbon as a reducing agent and dolomite as a binder to form pellets. A Thermo-Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) was used to determine the weight loss of pellets heated at an average rate of 40 K/min. up to a temperature of 1500°C. The degree of metal reduction was calculated by considering the pellet weight loss, and evaporation of moisture, dust, zinc and lead at high temperature. The reduction process was divided into three different steps. The first covers the 300°C to 760°C temperature range (from 7 to 18 min.), the second step ranges between 760°C and 980°C (18 to 24 min.), and the third covers temperatures above 980°C. Each step is characterized by different chemical reactions. Non-isothermal reduction kinetics equations were set up to describe each step. The kinetics parameters such as apparent activation energies and frequency factors were established. It was found that the first step was chemically controlled, while the second step was diffusion-controlled. Reduction behaviour in the third step was strongly dependent on the initial carbon content in the pellet. Chromium oxide (CrO) could only be reduced in this last step. High temperatures and higher initial carbon content favoured the reduction of CrO.

The hydrochemical method, which is based on the separation of aluminium oxide and silicon oxide by the hydrothermal decomposition of aluminosilicates by alkaline solutions in the presence of calcium oxide, can be effectively used for the complex processing of high-silicon aluminium ores. In this case, the silica is bound to a slightly soluble compound: Na20.2Ca0.2Si02•H20 (under the conditions: [&k]= 9, CaO/SiO2 = 1.05, alkali concentration in the solution: over 300 g/l Na20, T = 240...300 °C). If alkaline solutions of 100...150 g/l Na20 concentration are used, Ca0•SiO2•H20 or 2Ca0•Si02.0.5H20 compounds, depending on calcium oxide dosage, are formed at 280...320 °C. New methods for the crystallization of Na20.Al203.2.5H2O from concentrated alkaline solutions rand low-concentration solutions are proposed to isolate aluminium from solutions. The hydrochemical method, which involves no sintering process allows one to decrease the expenditure of heat by a factor of two, to reduce the investment and to exclude the pollution of the ambient air by dust-laden gases. Early ill 1914 it was decided to test, on a fairly large scale, the treatment by flotation of Anaconda slime and mill tailing. For this purpose a standard-type Minerals Separation machine was installed at the Washoe Reduction Works during May and June, 1914. This was followed by the installation of a full-size Callow pneumatic machine plant. Experiments were also made, on a smaller scale, with the Froment, the Towne, the Fields, and the Anaconda flotation machines. The last-named machine was developed at this plant. In addition to the tests made in the standard-type Minerals Separation machine some tests were made using a Minerals Separation machine of the sub-aeration type. During the series of experiments a large variety of oils was tested. Experiments were also conducted using both round-table feed and tailing to determine whether it would be better to displace the round tables by flotation for the treatment of the slime, or to supplement the round tables by flotation of the round-table tailing. A series of tests was also made on the treatment of the mill tailing by grinding followed by flotation to determine the relative merits of flotation and leaching for the treatment of this product. In addition, flotation tests were made on mixtures of mill tailing and slime. The round-table feed referred to above is the total slime from the mill. It contains about 35 per cent. colloidal solids and approximately 90 to 95 per cent. of the total solids will pass through 200 mesh (0.067 mm.). It assays from 2.3 to 2.6 per cent. Cu. The mill tailing referred to above is the total discard from the mill, exclusive of the slime. It is all finer than 2 mm. and about 90 to 95 per cent. will remain on 0.25 mm. Refratários MgO-C encontram-se entre os mais adequados para o uso na linha de escória de panelas para aço líquido. Seu comportamento, nesta aplicação, depende de fatores termodinâmicos e cinéticos. Métodos de cálculo termodinâmico para avaliar o potencial de degradação de refratários MgO-C por escórias e pela atmosfera são revistos brevemente. Tais métodos envolvem, em geral, premissas importantes sobre a quantidade de materiais envolvidos. Para avaliar um método mais simples, foram escolhidos dois tijolos MgO-C e duas escórias típicas do processo da CSN. Estes tijolos e escórias foram caraterizados, neste trabalho. O método apresentado consiste na realização de cálculos de equilíbrio em que a principal variável é a fração de escória em uma mistura hipotética com o refratário. Para a composição do refratário foram empregadas (a) composição média e (b) composição da matriz do tijolo. Os resultados indicam que é possível realizar previsões iniciais quanto à reatividade do refratário e determinada escória de forma simples. Os cálculos, evidentemente, não substituem testes cinéticos e testes em escala industrial, em vista da complexidade dos sistemas em questão.

In September 1855, 55-year-old Noah Spencer Kellogg and his $3 jackass named Bill discovered what was known at the time as a “blow out” of high-grade lead and silver ore. The deposit was located on the side of a North Idaho mountain high above the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. The ore was later assayed at 41,141 g/t (1,200 oz/st) silver. Kellogg named his discovery the Bunker Hill Lode, after the June 17, 1775 Revolutionary War battle of Bunker Hill. A thriving pioneer settlement sprang into existence around the resulting mine’s workings and was eventually— and appropriately — named Kellogg. The peak rising hundreds of feet above the mine’s adit was named “Jack-ass Peak” after Noah Kellogg’s hairy companion.

This report of a petroleum-engineering study of the Flat Rock oil field, Osage County, Okla., describes the geology, reviews the production history, and estimates remaining oil reserves. The Flat Rock field in the southeastern corner of Osage County approximately 6 miles northwest of Tulsa. Okla., was discovered in November 1904. The field was one of the first of many Bartlesville-sand fields developed in eastern Osage County during the early part of the 20th century. Although substantial oil reserves remain in the pressure depleted sands in some parts of the field, their economic recovery by water flooding will require careful consideration of the many factors involved.

Smelter-grade alumina is usually produced by the calcination of gibbsite. The ideal energy requirements for the calcination of gibbsite have been analysed and compared with the actual energy consumption of some industrial calcination processes. The consumption of most of these is considerably in excess of the ideal. Methods suggested for calcining dry gibbsite feeds which claim energy savings of 10-14% consume 26-34% more than the ideal energy requirement for dry feeds. This study indicates that it should be possible to recover appreciably more energy, giving further improvements in fuel efficiency, both in existing gibbsite calcination processes and in methods that have been proposed for the stagewise calcination of dry gibbsite

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the technology of petroleum and its products, the investigation including well-drilling methods and the transportation, treatment, and utilization of petroleum and of natural gas, with especial reference to the prevention of waste and to increased efficiencyin the development of oil and gas resources in land belonging to or controlled by the Government. During. the winter of 1912-13 the enormous waste of the gas encountered while drilling for oil in the Cushing field, Oklahoma, called forth protests from various sources, and appeal was made to the President of the United States and to the Secretary of the Interior in behalf of the landowner and of the public in general. The facts were wanted regarding the amount of waste and the technical conditions that were responsible for practices causing it. An investigation was ordered and conducted under the direct supervision of the late J. A. Holmes, the first Director of the Bureau of Mines. R. S.Blatchley was sent to investigate the amount of waste going on in the Mid-Continent flelds.s In the latter part of March, 1913, J. A. Pollard and A. G. Heggem were sent to Oklahoma to study well-drilling methods with reference to the waste of gas from wells on Indian lands and to suggest means of preventing the waste of natural gas on such lands. Pollard and Heggem decided that the mud-laden fluid process, which had been used successfully for some years in Texas, Louisiana, and California was the method that would meet the situation most efficiently and economically. The method was accordingly demonstrated in Oklahoma. In 1914 Congress provided for the employment of six oil and gas inspectors to supervise oil and gas mining operations on lands of the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma and to conduct investigations with a view to the prevention of waste. Positions under this appropriation have been held by William F. McMurray, James O. Lewis, Harry D. Aggers, Ralph R. "Weed,George W. McPherson, James C. Fowler, Louis W. Courtney, and Carl H. Beal, the technical work of these men being directed "byW. A. Williams, chief of the petroleum division, Bureau of Mines. After careful and impartial investigation of conditions in Oklahoma, these men also decided that the mud-laden fluid process was the one best adapted to prevent further wastes. In 1915 laws were passed by the State of Oklahoma that provide for the conservation of natural gas and oil, authority being given to the corporation commission to make rules and regulations and to employ agents to enforce them. After hearings and investigations, the corporation commission reached substantially the same conclusions as the Federal agents regarding the importance of the wastes and the best methods of conserving the gas. Technical Papers 66a and 68b were published by the Bureau of Mines in December, 1913, and January, 1914, respectively. Technical Paper 66 deals with the mud-laden fluid process in general and No. 68 with its application in Oklahoma. The interest aroused by these publications has been so widespread that within two years the first editions have been practically exhausted. Rather than reprint these publications, it has been considered advisable to replace them with the present report, which includes the results of more recent investigations. The methods of using the mud-laden fluid are an outgrowth of the rotary drilling system, which was developed in Texas and later employed in Louisiana and California. Some of the principles of the use of mud fluid had been observed and used to a limited extent for a long time in cable-tool drilling. So far as known it was first used successfully with a circulator and cable tools in the Coalinga field, California, in 1906,Harry D. Aggers, one of the contributors to this paper, working on the well. The part of the Bureau of Mines has been to call attention to its merits and to demonstrate its practical use in fields like those of the Mid-Continent.

This reflects the current concern about damage inflicted on the environment by our growing and increasingly affluent society. Mine Health and Safety research, along with investigations related to all other aspects of coal extraction and use, also continued to be implemented and expanded.

"This paper examines the economic advantages of adapting the production grade and recovery targets of a flotation circuit as a function of metal prices. The study is periormed using a steady state simulator for a Cu-Zn differential flotation circuit operating under the following strategies of 1) Maintaining constant operating targets, 2) Maximizing individual circuit Net Smelter Return and 3) Maximizing the global Cu-Zn circuit efficiency. Results are compared to assess whether or not one of the strategies produces benefits significantly higher than the others. The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.

The Taylor Creek lead-zinc deposit is on Taylor Creek, approximately 1-1/2 miles from tidewater, at the head of Duncan Canal, on the east side of Kupreanof Island, Petersburg district, southeastern Alaska. The property was located in 1903, and a 30-foot discovery cut was put to the west tank of the creek. Very little prospecting end developing has been done since that time. The property was examined by J. C. Roehm, associate mining engineer, Territorial Department of Mines, Juneau, Alaska, in June 1946. From exposure n the creek, a mineralized zone with possible dimensions of 1,700 feet by 1,000 feet was indicated. The general strike was northwest, and the dip was low and variable to the northwest. During September through November 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted a project on the property. Four diamond-drill holes, totaling 770.5 linear feet, were drilled from the surface and 280 lineal feet of hand trenching done. The mineral deposit was found to occur as patches that appear to be a replacement in dolomitic limestone. The patches of mineralization are small, irregularly shaped, and irregularly distributed. Maps showing the location of the drill holes and trenches, analyses of the cores from the drill holes, and anal lee of the samples from the trenches accompany this report (see, also, appendixes A, B, and C).

Two mine electrical power system simulations are presented. The first is a batch processed procedure capable of modeling a single mining machine consisting of a number of motors operating under various loads. These loads are the mechanical torque loads present at the motor shaft. The second simulation is a more flexible tool for modeling entire mine electrical power systems~ Detailed analyses of bus voltages, transmission-line power flows, and machine behavior are possible. This simulation operates interactively and the power system is configured as the user responds to program generated questions and requests. Development of the theory behind the programming, as well as detailed explanations of the models, is presented. Examples are provided to demonstrate simulation capabilities.

The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) features two 20 TeV counter rotating proton beams which will be housed in 87 km (54 miles) of tunnel. Four additional lower energy particle accelerators will be housed in 26 km (16 miles) of tunnel and underground structures. Physics experiments will be conducted in two underground detector halls approximately 67 m (220 feet) deep with footprints measuring about 30 m (100 feet) by 100 m (330 feet). Definition and design of underground facilities is advanced with construction of approximately one-third of the SSC program underway. This paper presents an overview and status of the SSC project.

During the first quarter of 1973 ADL worked closely with PMSRC staff, under an extremely compressed time schedule, on all aspects of the detailed planning, organization and overall coordination and preparation of the lectures and in-mine demonstrations for the Bureau's Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications given in March of 1973 to representatives of the mining industry. Our efforts centered on the detailed organization and preparation of each of the five technical seminar lectures and associated supporting material, and the coordination of tasks assigned to ADL and other seminar participants. Revised and expanded drafts of the seminar papers were prepared from rough draft versions obtained from PMSRC, Collins Radio and ADL staff. Measurements were made to gather key data on the operation and performance of each of the following systems installed in the Bruceton Safety Research Mine; call alert paging, roof bolt paging, section wireless radio, and guided wireless radio systems. These data were analyzed, manufacturer's equipment specifications utilized, and calculations made to provide performance curves and data for each of the above systems. A substantial amount of artwork was conceived and prepared for 35 m slides, system identification posters in the mine, and seminar handouts. This artwork included some forty 8-1/2" x 11" line sketches, graphs, block diagrams, circuit diagrams, coverage maps, and other line drawings; five 30" x 40" block diagram system identification posters suitable for in-mine use; a 20" x 30" detail perspective illustration of a representative coal mine layout; forty viewgraphs; and seventy 35 m slides of the artwork and word charts. Conferences, discussions and review sessions were held with conference participants to help coordinate the various efforts, obtain technical information, and make final plans regarding the lecture presentations, associated visual aids, and the communication system installations to be demonstrated in the Bruceton mine. These meetings included final systems checkouts and dry run presentations and reviews of the lectures and mine demonstrations. This phase of the seminar effort concluded with R. Lagace and R. Spencer of ADL participating in two days of seminar presentations in the lecture hall and in the Bruceton mine.

The importance of phosphate in feeding the people of the world has been recognized by mining companies as they continue their search for new ore deposits and ways of improving phosphate production. An extensive phosphate-recovery research project involving investigation of beneficiation variables by batch testing, flotation pilot-plant processing of the major portion of the ore, gravity separation of the coarse fraction, and recovery of byproduct heavy minerals of a North Carolina phosphate deposit has been completed. Data obtained through batch tests enabled the development of an economical flowsheet which proved successful for the efficient recovery of a good quality phosphate concentrate in a pilot plant.
