MR. FOOTE: This paper deals with blasting and mechanical loading. The Union Pacific Coal Company does all of its blasting with permissible powder and electric shooting, but this paper deals principally with blasting in connection with mechanical loading. With the introduction of mechanical loading into the coal fields of southern Wyoming one of the main problems to be taken into consideration was the drilling and blasting of the coal. The methods used in blasting coal for hand loading were found to be ill adapted to the mechanical practice, so numerous tests were conducted from time to time to determine a system or systems whereby the coal might be blasted in a form to be easily handled by the loading units. The general practice in blasting coal for hand loading, for example in a room 24 feet wide and seven feet high with an undercut of seven feet, would be to shoot one or two strong breaking shots in the center and one on each rib. While much of the cut would be blasted down in good lump, some coal would be left hanging at the back and ribs. With hand loading, the miners would have time to pull this coal down with a pick between cars and eventually would clean up the place ready for the cutting machine. The loading machine, however, cannot get this coal down and its operation would be delayed while the men were doing the necessary pick work.

"THE TOWN OF Salmo, rail centre for the Salmo lead-zinc mining district, is in southeastern British Columbia 26 miles by road east of Trail an about the same distance south of Nelson. The belt in which the mines occur is a few miles east of Salmo and extends about 6 miles north of the town and 17 miles south and southwest to the International Boundary. The belt includes the H. B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, the Reeves MacDonald mine, and the Jack Pot property of New Jersey Zinc Explorations Limited.Since 1949, the Jersey and Reeves MacDonald mines have produced most of the lead and zinc in the district. From 1949 through 1954 these two mines together produced a total of 233,134 ounces of silver, 87,659,399 pounds of lead, 215,708,856 pounds of zinc and 475,397 pounds of cadmium. This amounts to more than 80 per cent of the total production of lead and 95 per cent of the total production of zinc from the district since the first recorded production in 1906. Reserves at the largest properties amount to several million tons of ore containing 4 to 7 per cent combined lead and zinc. Several prospects are potential producers.Regional StructureThe main structural units in the Salmo area are outlined in Figure I, and the major rock units of the stratigraphic column are listed in the following table. The lead and zinc deposits are replacements in a highly deformed limestone formation near the base of the Laib group, and all mineralized zones are on the south and east side of structural unit 2 (see Figure I)."

Solidification of Pb-Sn alloys ranging in composition from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb ws observed with polarized light. Lamellar structures were observed over a larger range of compositions in alloys containing excess tin than excess lead, as expected from constitutional supercooling. The occurrence of pools of supercooled liquid surrounded by lead is explained by the difficulty in nucleating tin. Cells and dendrites weve observed in tin-rich alloys. Evidence was found that the degenerate structure formed at low growth rates, the formation of faults, and abrupt changes in composition and structure can be attributed to non-steady-state growth. The apparent interface shape was observed to have deep grooves at the interphase boundaries. HUNT and Jackson have observed the shape of the interface during growth of organic eutectics. They observed the formation of lamellar faults and shape instabilities upon changes in growth rate. The lamellar structure in these organic eutectics was not restricted to the eutectic composition. Recent work by Mollard and Flemings2 indicated that Pb-Sn alloys from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb could be solidified with a lamellar or rodlike structure if a sufficiently steep temperature gradient was used at a slow growth rate. Observations of the solid liquid interface of the Pb-Sn eutectic were made by Davies3 using polarized light. Photographs were at too low a magnification to determine the interface shape, but he has concluded that tin was the leading phase. In the following experiments, solidification of a range of Pb-Sn alloys from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb was observed using polarized light, to determine the factors controlling stability of the lamellar structure. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure. One hundred-gram ingots of alloys prepared from 99.999 pct pure Pb and Sn were cast into graphite molds under argon. The compositions of the alloys were 1.2, 6, 12, 26, 36, 46, and 56 at. pct Pb. Two-gram pieces were melted between two cover glass slides which were squeezed into a 1-mm separation. Samples were then observed under polarized light in a hot stage shown in Fig. 1. A long working distance objective designed for viewing at 500 times was used. Photography was made difficult by the lack of illumination and contrast at these high magnifications. By using an elliptical polarization compensator, as suggested by A. Holik, the contrast and illumination could be optimized. Photographs could be taken only at slow growth rates to avoid excessive interface motion during the 15-sec exposure used. The solidification rate was varied by increasing or decreasing the power to the heater. It was found that insulation was necessary to avoid undesired growth rate fluctuations. The temperature gradient, as measured with two thermocouples 1 cm apart, was 80" ± 20°C per cm during all the experiments reported here. The advantage of this procedure is in being able to observe solidification while it is occurring. However, the observations are restricted to the glass-metal surface and may be influenced by this surface. Also, one has no knowledge of the interior of the sample, in contrast to studies of the freezing of transparent organic eutectics.' Observations. Cable supports offer several advantages over traditional secondary support methods by enhancing stress redistribution to pillars and gob areas, minimizing or eliminating timbers and cribs that reduce ventilation, eradicating material-handling injuries related to placement of crib supports, and providing a cost-effective alternative to secondary support. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in researching alternatives to traditional roof support methods, designed and installed high-strength cable supports to improve the stability of longwall gate road and bleeder entries in a Western U.S. coal mine. With the cooperation of industry, methods were developed to install cable supports in a tailgate and bleeder entry test area using traditional resin cartridges. Resin-grouted cable bolts were also installed and evaluated in additional longwall gate road and bleeder entry systems at the study mine. The cable-bolted areas successfully maintained roof support throughout the tailgate and bleeder entries. Cable supports replaced wood cribbing as secondary support in the bleeder entry system and minimized the use of cribbing in the longwall tailgate entries. This report describes the theory, application, and advantages of cable supports and presents mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

The feasibility of leaching calcareous and siliceous oxidized copper ores by downward percolation with dilute acid was investigated in the laboratory and in a small continuous plant operated by the Federal Bureau of Mines . The crushed ore was leached in deep columns with solutions containing 1 or 5 percent sulfuric acid to dissolve the oxidized copper . Bench - scale laboratory tests on two calcareous ores from the same deposit indicated that a maximum copper extraction , about 72 percent , could be expected from heap leaching a feed as coarse as 1 inch . Laboratory tests on a siliceous ore showed that almost 70 percent of the copper could be extracted by leaching a 1 / 4 - inch feed . The bench - scale tests were supplemented by larger continuous runs wherein the copper was recovered from the leach liquors by precipitation on detinned scrap iron . Leaching the calcareous ore for approximately 10 days recovered 62 percent of the total copper . The sulfuric acid consumption was 9.6 pounds per pound of copper recovered . Treatment of the siliceous ore recovered 62.5 percent of the total copper in a 2.5 - day leach and the acid consumption was 3.7 pounds per pound of copper recovered . Cement copper products that assayed over 71 percent copper were obtained from the leach solutions by precipitation on scrap iron . The bench - scale and continuous tests demonstrated that downward percolation leaching of the calcareous ores was technically feasible but not economically practicable because of high acid consumption by the gangue . Leaching of the siliceous ore was rapid and the acid and water requirements were nominal . The downward percolation leach procedure is simple and requires a minimum of plant equipment .

INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely and accurately many previously published limits.

This report describes an investigation of the technical feasibility of using a conventional commercial-size (10-ft. i.d.), rotating grate, dry-ash-removal type gas producer to make producer gas from chestnut-size bone anthracite. Test instruments were installed, and some minor changes were made in the equipment to handle the large quantities of materials expected. Extensive tests, lasting about 4 weeks, were planned, using 35 to 50 percent ash chestnut anthracite bone. However, operations were suspended after 8 days when it became apparent that to use this type of fuel satisfactorily substantial changes in equipment and operating procedures would be required. Nevertheless, enough data were obtained to indicate that gas could be produced continuously and routinely from bone coal in this type of producer whenever conditions justified the necessary development work.

Energy recovery of livestock waste can not only reduce waste pollution but also generate renewable energy and further create economic bene fits. Currently, most of livestock waste in Taiwan is treated as waste without efficiently recycled. This paper aims to explore and evaluate the energy recovery of livestock waste in Taiwan and further provide policy suggestions. Study results show that small farming scale of livestock industry in Taiwan leads to a lower efficiency of biogas energy recovery. Besides, the environment with relative low price of electricity and high invest cost for power generation plant is hard to provide incentive for implementation of energy recovery which has further caused difficulty on policy promotion for renewable energy recovery of livestock waste in Taiwan. Policy reform with increasing FITs and differentiated purchasing rate for biogas power is suggested to stimulate energy recycling of livestock waste in Taiwan.

THE meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sept. 12 to 15, inclusive, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute. It was at Wilkes-Barre, in 1871, that the foundation was laid for the great institution that now includes in its roster the greatest names. in mining engineering in every civilized country of the world. The founders of the Institute, with rare prescience, established a common ground upon which all mining engineers, whatever particular branch they might consider most pertinent, could stand securely, assured of a deep-seated interest from their brethren similarly minded in other localities. So wise and clear was the vision of the founders that every engineer connected with mining has found it beneficial, not to say indispensable, to maintain his connection with the Institute and to increase his technical enthusiasm through the medium of the valuable technical publications. The Mariana arc is an ~1,400-km-long intraoceanic arc that marks the southern extension of the Izu-Bonin arc, and is host to 62 ?volcanic centers? of which at least 27 (21 submarine) are hydrothermally, or volcanically active. A surface ship cruise in early 2003 mapped the distribution of hydrothermal plumes emanating from these centers, followed by remotely operated vehicle (ROV) cruises with ROPOS in 2004 and Jason II in 2006. With the exception of one volcano (East Diamante), none of the vent sites visited by the ROVs were host to sulfide mineralization. Rather, they were characterized by high sulfidation mineral assemblages dominated by native sulfur. The sulfur was seen marking the vicinity of vent sites, or as sulfur ?chimneys? (e.g., NW Eifuku and Nikko), or more spectacularly as ?lakes? of molten sulfur, either occupying the summit crater of the volcano (e.g., Nikko), or perched on the flanks of the volcano, near the summit (e.g., Daikoku). Gas (H2S and CO2) was discharging through the molten sulfur. Evidence for these lakes to have either been substantially ?deeper? in their recent past (e.g., Nikko), or existing at other volcanoes (e.g., Seamount ?X?) is given by remnant ?pillars? of native sulfur that are reminiscent of rock pillars in lava lakes found along mid-ocean ridges.

The "V" system was first introduced by the West Virginia Coal & Coke Company at their No. 9 mine, Norton. Norton is a small mining village on the B. & 0. railway, about seven miles from the town of Elkins. This year, accompanied by G. D. MacDougall, I visited this mine to obtain first-hand information regarding this modem system and to determine its adaptability to conditions in Nova Scotia. The following is a brief account of my observations. The seam that is being worked is known as the Lower Kittaning, which, at this point, has an average thickness of 7 feet. This includes a band of hard clay varying in thickness from 8 to 14 inches, which occurs about 2 feet from the pavement, also 8 inches of inferior coal at the roof. The latter is not recovered, which leaves to be mined about 5 1/2 feet of clean coal. The roof is slate and shale for the first 30 feet, followed by 40 to 60 feet of sandstone; the total cover is from 80 to 250 feet thick. The seam lies very flat, with a dip of only 2 per cent., and, as the dip is toward the main entrance, it' is in favor of the load, also providing natural drainage for any water the mine makes. As the mine is not gassy, and there is no water to be pumped out, one can understand that mining conditions are practically ideal.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide) are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines (about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in Arkansas and Michigan. Arkansas, with its six plants, was the leading U.S. state in bromine production. Bromine being the leading mineral commodity valuewise produced in the state. The Michigan bromine production was a byproduct of magnesium compounds production.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the sixth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Fayette County, Pa., which comprises the Uniontown and parts of the Brownsville, Connellsville, Donegal, Waynesburg, Masontown, and Confluence, Pa., Morgantown and Bruceton, W. Va., and Accident, Md., quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals ar.9 included. Data on the coal beds in this county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information.

Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general nature of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers from a lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they haye undergone. Although during the paiilt century or more many co.rrect observations have been made and recorded, these were falsely or inadequately interpreted, so that many of the interpretations rendered are contradictory. As a result there has been great confusion. Many of the observations made in the past, although accurate and correct, could not be explained, because the principles involved in a correct solution of the problem were not then known. For example, Parkinson, Hutton, Petzhold, Guembel, and others made valuable discoveries regarding the processes by which plant substances are transformed into coal, but as the principles involved are those of colloidal chemistry, a science not known to the scientific world of that time, the observed facts could not be interpreted and the solution of the whole problem was blocked. The explanation of the true meaning of the alternating bright and dull bands so familiar in all ordinary bituminous coals afforCls another example. This banding has been observed and recorded from the earliest times, and has led to the forming of many false theories. Some gAologists, for example, have endeavored to explain the bands as due to alternating climatic conditions during the coal-forming period. Had the geologists known the true nature of coal they could not have made this mistake nor many others made in the past. To fill in a few of these gaps and to clarify some of the existing confusion is the aim of this paper. The immediate cause that led the author to investigate further the composition of coal and the origin and structure of its constituents was that when an attempt was made to discover the meaning of the coking and noncoking properties of coal a more exact knowledge of the nature of coal was required than was then available.

The paper aims at clarifying the up-to-now misappreciated role taken by pore water on the design of deep tunnels in saturated porous media. Numerical simulations with a non-dimensional FEM-model emphasise the influence of pore water characteristics (in situ pressure and compressibility) and boundary conditions (lining permeability) on the short and long term underground-structure equilibrium states. These results cannot be achieved by means of monophasic total stress analyses. The Bureau of Mines has participated in the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48A (API-RP48A) program on the Separation and Identification of Sulfur Compounds in Crude Petroleum. The lack of reference compounds or infrared spectral data has made difficult the identification of individual sulfur compounds boiling above 140° C. The recent acquisition of 24 alkylthiophnnes has made possible a limited study of this important class of sulfur compounds. The infrared spectra of 2-monoalkylthiophenes and 2,5-dialkylthiophenes for the 2 to 15p range are reported. Correlations for determining the 2-alkyl and 2,5-dialkyl substituted thiophenes are derived from this information. The 2-alkylthiophenes show a unique pattern in the 5.50 to 6.54 region, while the 2,5-dialkylthiophenes show a distinctive pattern in the 5.6µ to 6.7µ region. A skeletal vibration occurs in the 9.5 to 10.0µ region for all of the thiophenes investigated. These data will aid the infrared spectroscopist in the identification of compounds of the type reported.
