A series of linear programmed instruction modules was developed in the general subject areas of Blasting Technology & Explosives Safety & Electrical Training. The linear programs (modules) were developed in the form of tape-slide plus workbook materials, while the branching format evolved from the LTS teaching machine system from MIT, through several other teaching machines and micro-computers, finally settling on Radio Shack TRS-80 microcomputers, Models I & III. Initial validation figures indicate that essentially the same result, are attained from both methods (based on pre and post test scores), with the most noticeable difference being an approximately 25% savings in study time with the branching modules. In December 1980, the development of modules on High-Voltage Training, Trolley Wireman Training, and Compressed Gas Safety was added to the overall tasks of the contract.

History In approaching the subject of diamond-drilling practice, a brief history of the origin and development of the diamond drill may be of interest. The use of black diamonds for boring holes in rock was discovered in 1863 by Rudolph Leschot, a French engineer. In 1864, he employed a diamond bit to bore holes for blasting purposes in the construction of the Mont Cenis tunnel between France and Italy. The method was introduced and developed in the United States in the late sixties. The first deep hole was drilled for coal in 1870, near Pottsville, Penn., by M. C. Bullock. This hole was seven hundred and fifty feet deep. It can be inferred that the diamond drill was introduced into Canada in 1871, when a bore-hole, known as Harper's bore-hole, was drilled for coal at Springhill, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia; and at the old Silver Islet mine, near Port Arthur, the diamond drill was in use as early as 1872. Diamond Drills While M. C. Bullock was developing the diamond drill for exploratory work, the Sullivan Machine Company, of Claremont, N.H., was developing the diamond channelers and gadders for quarry work. These quarry machines were very successful until the high price of black diamonds became prohibitive. In 1878, Albert Ball, chief engineer of the Sullivan Machine Company, designed the Sullivan diamond drill so well known today. The first of these drills went to the Lake Superior iron ranges. After 1880, use of the diamond drill expanded rapidly and spread to all parts of the world where exploratory work was being done. In recent years, the type of diamond drill has not changed much, but better material is going into its construction. Steel castings have replaced cast-iron. Ball and roller bearings are now used instead of brasses and babbits. Gun lubrication has eliminated the oil-can. These improvements make a drill that can be operated for long periods without expense for repairs.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.

Tailings dam failures have been occurring in recent years. They are considered more vulnerable than hydraulic dams due to the lack of regulations on specific design criteria, and stability requirements regarding monitoring during the construction and maintenance process. Thus, monitoring the dam is essential to know the dam's existing state and ensure its safety. One of the reasons tailings storage facilities fail is slope instability caused by moisture content. A relationship does exist between moisture content and surface strength, early detection of seepage would help to assess the physical condition of the dam. Moreover, to cover the tailings dam area in an efficient way Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are suitable because of their versatility and high-resolution data acquisition. Mounted with a high-resolution RGB camera, and thermal, or hyperspectral sensors UAVs can acquire good quality images that combined with image analysis and machine learning algorithms yield a good estimate of soil moisture.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the central North Atlantic and the Gorda Ridge within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon are yielding new discoveries of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. The TAG hydrothermal field in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26 degree N, 45 degree W has been a site of international collaborative research since the discovery there of extensive manganese deposits associated with low temperature hydrothermal activity in 1973 as part of the TAG (Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse Project). The first high-temperature hydrothermal activity, massive sulfide deposits and vent biota discovered in the Atlantic were found at the TAG hydrothermal field in 1985. Collaborative dive series with DSV ALVIN in 1990 and in 1991 with the two Russian MIR submersibles in the TAG field have found and sampled large inactive sulfide mounds in addition to the previously known active sulfide mound. The active sulfide mound on the floor of the rift valley is about 250 m in diameter and 40 m high with a concentric zonation of mineral types and flow regimes decreasing in temperature from 365 degree C black smokers at the center to white smokers and diffuse flow toward the margins. The recent dive series in coordination deep-towed instrument surveys have delineated a zone extending about 5 km along the lower east wall of the rift valley of inactive sulfide mounds up to a kilometer in diameter. MIR Mound in this zone consists of a central sulfide zone about 400 m in diameter and 50 m high surrounded by a halo of low-temperature deposits to 200 m wide. Inactive sulfide chimneys contain the first primary, free gold grains found at a hydrothermal site on a mid-ocean ridge (P.A. Rona, Y.A. Bogdanov, E.G. Gurvich, N.A. Rimski-Korsakov, A.M. The comminution in a high-pressure roller mill is modeled by an energy-based population balance approach considering three aspects of breakage taking place in the active zones of the mill: the interparticle breakage in the high-compression zone, the breakage at the edges of the rolls, and the pre-breakage in the acceleration zone. Together with an appropriate model of classification, this model can be used to simulate steady-state performance of closed-circuit grindings with high-pressure roller mill. After a brief description of the basic modeling approach, the algorithm of the steady-state calculation for a generalized grinding-classification circuit is presented, from which the circuit configurations commonly met in industrial practice can be derived. With an iron ore as feed material for example, simulation results are shown and discussed in respect of circulating load, specific energy consumption and product fineness for closed-circuit grindings under various operating conditions. The effects of stressing intensity, working gap, classifier parameters as well as circuit configuration on the overall circuit performance are investigated systematically by means of computer simulation.

Bench-scale beneficiation studies were made on Idaho dolomitic phosphate rock using the TVA carbonate flotation process. The process employed diphosphonic acid as a phosphate mineral depressant and fatty acid as a carbonate mineral collector. Silica was subsequently rejected as float using an amine collector, with phosphate product recovered as the sink fraction. Two samples of prepared flotation feed from commercial operation were used; one contained 21% P205 and 3.2% MgO, and the other contained 26% P205 and 1.8% MgO. The results indicate that concentrates containing 31-33% P205 and 1% or less MgO can be obtained, with P205 recovery of about 80%.

This paper reviews the trends in the past two years in autogenous grinding throughout the world. It covers rock grinding in South Africa, Sweden, Canada, the United States, Finland and Germany. To properly orient the discussion on this subject, the paper attempts to define and classify the scope of autogenous comminution. As this is a relatively new subject, there is often considerable confusion regarding the various practices, which sometimes differ widely. By clarifying the types and forms, we hope to help clear up this con-fusion. Autogenous grinding is being carried out, throughout the world, either in mills grinding in water or solution or in dry mills using air classification to remove the finished material. The wet grinding, particularly, can be divided into: (1) (2) (3) Primary autogenous grinding, or "run-of-mine" grinding. Secondary autogenous grinding or semi-autogenous grinding or rock pebble grinding. Combination processes. -This covers plants in which pebbles made in the primary mill are re-moved and used as grinding media for fine grinding in secondary mills.

THIS investigation was carried on by means of models and the applica-tion of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimensions. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in- bed B, a 3/8-in, bed C and two 1/8 -in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at ±2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back 1/4 in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious ,reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft, and no artificial support. The Mining Engineering Department at Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) has a new Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved program for Part 46 and Part 48 mine health and safety training. The training program will utilize the facilities and faculty from Montana Tech’s Mining Engineering and Safety, Health, and Industrial Hygiene departments to provide superior mine health and safety training to the mining industry. The faculty of each department includes professionals with experience in safety training and the mining industry. The training program incorporates adult learning techniques and extensive hands-on activities in all training modules. The instruction will exceed MSHA requirements. The resources available on Montana Tech’s campus will be utilized to strengthen the training program providing the mining industry with a world class mine health and safety training program.

EVEN the weather man joined in a friendly conspiracy to make the fall meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division at Rolla, Mo., Oct. 23-25. the splendid surges that it was. Following weeks of rain, the foliage of the Ozarks was still green, merely enlivened here and there by splashes of autumn coloring. In contrast to the tranquil beauty of the School of Mines campus under smiling Indian summer skies, the pace of the meeting was lively. Registration was larger than at any previous meeting and included an unusual number of prominent names and delegates from all over the country. From 125 to 150 were present throughout the three technical sessions, at the Thursday evening smoker, and also at the banquet on Friday; when students trooped in to the technical sessions the audience was augmented occasionally to over 200.

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.

The algorithms for the mathematical modeling to predict productivity of underground room-and-pillar mining systems are well known and documented. These algorithms consider the time-varying relationships between mining equipment for a given geometry of operations as well as other constraints. This paper presents WebConSim, a newly developed, Web-based, user-friendly computer simulation tool for the Windows environment. The simulator is easily customized for use by field engineers, planning engineers, and management and will help mine operators plan the optimum mining sequence for different mine geometries and equipment layouts. Program output includes production data and equipment utilization indices, as well as time driven event chains that can be used for virtual reality presentations.

This study examines the isothermal and non-isothermal reduction behaviors of iron ore compacts in a pure hydrogen atmosphere and compares the results obtained during the reduction process by CO. The different phases accompanying the reduction reactions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its morphology was microscopically examined. In isothermal experiments, temperature plays a significant role in the reduction process. At any given temperature, the reduction rate during the initial stages is higher than that during the final stages. The reduction rate in H2 atmosphere was faster than in CO gas. The comparison of activation energy values suggested that reduction with H2 is more efficient thanwith CO. At the same temperature, the time required to achieve a certain degree of reduction was lower when using H2 gas than CO atmosphere. In non-isothermal tests, the heating rate has a significant effect on the reduction rate and reduction extent. At the same heating rate, the degree of reduction was higher in H2 atmosphere than in CO gas. Based on experimental data, the parameters of reaction kinetics were deduced by application of model-free and model-fitting methods. The reduction in H2 atmosphere was controlled by nucleation model (Avrami-Erofeev model), while the CO reduction reaction was controlled by gas diffusion.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge.
