AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal deposits at Mount Gran (latitude 76°59' S, longitude 161°07' E), Victoria Land, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 1959-60 as part of the continuing U.S. Antarctic Research Program, which is under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. The coals and associated rocks were measured, sampled, and analyzed. Five coalbeds, ranging in thickness from over 10 feet to scattered fragments of coaly material in sandstone, occur in a sandstone-coal series overlying a series of crossbedded red-buff sandstones. Both series are part of the Beacon group of sediments, and both show some evidence of pressure metamorphism. The sandstones are poorly cemented and are composed dominantly of rounded and often frosted quartz grains. The sediments have been broken and uplifted by a series of massive diabase sills. The broken nature of the sediments precluded an estimate of the amount of coal present. The Mount Gran coals are highly attrital banded anthracites and semianthracites that have most commonly a moderately dull luster but do include bright bands. Coal in contact with or near diabase intrusives is partly graphitic but shows no evidence of coking. Apparently the coal was beyond coking rank before emplacement of the adjacent intrusives. Fragments of the plant Glossopteris indica found with the coal suggest Permian age but do not prove it. The coals appear to be derived from plant remains that collected in shallow basins; individual coalbeds would tend to be lenticular bodies that formed in different places as the dominantly sandy sediments were deposited. The wide distribution of coal indicates that coal-forming conditions prevailed over much of the continent; the great thickness of Beacon sediments indicates that similar conditions may have persisted through a long period of geologic time. Generally similar coal deposits may occupy widely separated stratigraphic positions.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. L., and Smith, J. C., 1967, McGraw Hill, NY, Chapter 26, pg. 825). The geometrical arrangement of the roll crusher is shown on the accompanying sketch. West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation's total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state's 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

Lime production is the largest single chemical use for limestone and dolomite. The term “lime” in this review refers to high-calcium and dolomitic quicklime, their hydroxide forms and dead-burned dolomite. This review is restricted to a discussion of the U.S. lime industry. Production and consumption In 2004, according to preliminary data, U.S. lime production was about 20.1 Mt (22.1 million st), an increase of 900 kt (990,000 st) compared with 2003. Production in2004 was valued at about $1.4 billion. Commercial sales of lime totaled 18.6 Mt (20.5 million st) and captive production was 1.5 Mt (1.65 million st). Total U.S. consumption was about 20.2 Mt (22.2 million st). The majority of U.S. lime trade was with Canada.

Ammonia, the principal source of fixed nitrogen, was produced by 16 companies at 31 plants in the United States during 2003. Fifty-five percent of U.S. ammonia production capacity was centered in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas because of their large reserves of natural gas, the dominant domestic feedstock. Production In 2004, U.S. producers operated at about 59 percent of their rated capacity. The United States remained the world’s second largest ammonia producer and consumer following China. Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates, nitric acid and ammonium sulfate were the major derivatives of ammonia in the United States, in descending order of importance.

"Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

Paste backfill, because of its colloidal or water-holding properties, does not produce run-off water when placed underground. Paste backfill is generally, prepared from relatively low water content, full mill tailings with a certain proportion of ultra-fine particles and mixed with cement, thus producing early and better strength. Mill plant discharge tailings and other materials available at or near the mine site such as sand, aggregates or waste rock are used as blending materials in the mix design. This study investigates the influence of the above-mentioned blending materials on the mechanical characteristics of paste backfill, as well as the grading, shape, specific surface area, mineralogy and workability of the different mix design.

In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology, to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when it is attempted to maximise the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory test work was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimise the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimised in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory test work results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

Expanded war in Viet-Nam overshadowed activities in the Far East in 1965, diverting capital and materials from potential regional development projects. Japan with-stood a period of business recession that was particularly felt by its coal mining and iron and steel industries. Toward yearend signs of improvement began to show. Despite the recession with attendant credit restrictions and forced cutbacks in areas of overproduction, Japan's overall industrial output rose nearly 5 percent during the year. Foreign trade, liberalized in 1964, was a strong point in the Japanese economy and took the place of lagging domestic demand. Japan maintained its third place in world production of iron and steel ahead of West Germany and in 1965 was the world's fore-most exporter of iron and steel in primary and semimanufactured forms. Economic setbacks in mainland China caused by its "Great Leap" failures and subsequent withdrawal of Soviet technical assistance were difficulties relegated to the past. However, a newly formed "Red Guard" political group, part of a so-called cultural revolution, was due to cause new disruptions in 1966. Nevertheless, significant gains were claimed in Chinese industry, and the country approached self-sufficiency in petroleum in 1965 by virtue of its Tach'ing oilfield. Restoration of friendly relations was achieved between South Korea and Japan accompanied by Japanese offers of industrial aid and increased trade. Indonesia's economy was deteriorating; the country withdrew from regional development organizations and continued its stubborn confrontation policy against Malaysia throughout 1965. Late in the year after a Communist uprising had been quelled, there was a period of political retrenchme t and it was hoped that economic improvements would follow. Petroleum remained a strong area in Indonesia's varied resources, and its production was increasing. Tin output declined, however, because of operating difficulties.

In practice, frothers are selected following general guidenlies and verification by laboratory and/or plant flotation tests. The terms “powerful” or “selective,” which are commonly used to characetrize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning. A research program has been set out to study fundamental properties of the flotation frothers and to identify the tests which can provide information needed to characterize and classify such flotation agents.

A method to predict stress-induced failures around excavations based on the mapped geological and rock mechanical information is studied. Totally of 7 km of newly excavated tunnels are mapped in the Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland at depth between 1000 - 1440 m from which the results and conclusions from the firstly mapped 1.7 km of tunnels are reported. The main rock type at the site is very hard volcanite having uniaxial compressive strength of 230 MPa in median and GSI-value 72 - 80. The maximum in situ stress around the tunnels is 65 - 85 MPa. The prediction of observed stress failures was preceded by comparing elastic 3-D simulation results of tunnels with three statistical yield criteria. Read’s or Hoek & Brown’s yielding criteria are found the most relevant, though, the effect of anisotropy was found to be significant. The most important parameters having a correlation with stress failures are the tunnel orientation and the foliation of rock. Also, the rock type and its strength, tunnel shape and the geological anomalies have their effects. Further, a delay time on mapping was found to clearly diminishing of the most violent failures. Une méthode de prédiction des contraintes à la rupture autour d'excavation, établie sur la base de cartographie géologique et d'information sur la mécanique des roches, à été étudiée. Au total, 7 km d'un tunnel nouvellement percé à une profondeur de 1000 à 1400 m ont été cartographiés dans la mine de Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi en Finlande. La roche principale du site est une vulcanite dur ayant une résistance à la compression uniaxiale de 230 MPa (valeur moyenne) et une valeur GSI de 72 - 80. La contrainte in situ maximale autour du tunnel se situe entre 65 et 85 MPa. La prédiction des contraintes à la rupture observées a été évaluée en comparant les résultats d'une simulation 3D d'un tunnel avec trois critères de limite d'élasticité statistiques. Le critère de limite d'élasticité de Read ou de Hoek & Brown’s se trouvent être les plus important, même si les effets de l'anisotropie sont significatifs. Les paramètres les plus importants ayant une corrélation avec la rupture sont l'orientation du tunnel et la foliation de la roche. De plus, le type de roche et sa résistance à la compression, la forme du tunnel et les anomalies géologiques ont aussi leur importance. Finalement, un délai dans la cartographie résulte en une diminution nette des ruptures violentes. Basierend auf kartierten geologischen und felsmechanischen Informationen, wird eine Methode untersucht, um spannngsbedingtes Versagen um Ausbrüche herum vorherzusagen. Insgesamt werden 7 km neu ausgebrochenen Tunnels in einer Tiefe zwischen 1000 und 1400 m in der Inmet Pyhäsalmin Mine in Finnland kartiert. Das hauptsächlich vorkommende Gestein ist sehr hart und vulkanischen Ursprungs mit einer mittleren einachsialen Druckfestigkeit von 230 MPa (Medianwert) und einem GSI-Wert von 72-80. Die maximale In-situ-Spannung im Tunnel beträgt 65-85 MPa. Die Vorhersage von beobachteten Spannungsversagen werden weitergeführt indem man elastische 3-D-Simulationsergebnisse von Tunneln mit drei statistischen Fliesskriterien vergleicht. Read's oder Hoek's Fliesskriteria werden dabei als die relevantesten Kriterien angesehen, obwohl auch der Effekt der Anisotropie als wesentlich erachtet wird. Die wichtigsten Parameter für eine Korrelation von Spannungsversagen sind die Orientierung des Tunnels und die Schieferung der Gesteinsschichten. Desweiteren haben Gesteinsart, Tunnelprofil und geologische Anomalien ihren Einfluss. Ausserdem zeigt sich, dass eine Verzögerung bei der Kartierung die ausgeprägtesten Versagen deutlich verringern.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

In the manganese ferroalloys industry, there is increasing focus on the performance of different carbonaceous materials within the smelting processes. With a developing scarcity of traditional raw materials, new carbon sources are being identified for potential use in the processes. For this purpose, it is important to be able to predict the suitability of different materials in the process. Hence, the effects of both the physical and chemical properties of the carbon material on the reduction kinetics of manganese and silicon from slag to metal, have been investigated using an advanced sessile drop technique. Using this technique, the reaction patterns of SiO2-MnO containing slag droplets in contact with various solid carbon materials (graphites with different properties as well as cokes and charcoals) at 1400 to 1600\\176;C were studied in-situ. In addition, slag and metal reaction products from kinetic experimental series were analysed. From these results, differences in reactivity between various carbon materials and slags were demonstrated and explained. Mechanisms for both manganese and silicon reduction were proposed.

El método de minado es un componente importante de la estimaciòn de reservas, y el beneficio del proyecto está condicionado a la habilidad de minar selectivamente. En ese sentido, los métodos de lixiviación fallan en proveer estimaciones imparciales de mineral recuperable y exponen el proyecto a un riesgo indebido. Por ello, se preveó otro método alternativo como el Condicionamiento Uniforme y las Variables de Servicio donde las estimaciones puedan ser deducidas de un conjunto de simulaciones condicionales, que requieren menos hipòtesis pero consumen más tiempo. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la variación de las reservas recuperables de acuerdo a la selección de método de estimación. La aplicación de tres métodos de estimación no linear- en un depósito de cobre se comparan con asunciones teòricas y las caracterìsticas geológicas del depósito. La performance relativa de cada método es evaluada por comparaciòn de las curvas de tonelaje-ley y contenido metàlico sobre un cut-off lìmite.

Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates.
