This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Grant County, N. Mex. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A similar program was conducted from 1928 to 1939, which helped to improve the efficiency of mining operations. The primary purpose of the program is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on methods, practices, and related features in mining mineral deposits. It is expected that the program will: (1) Promote efficiency in operating mines; (2) assist operators and engineers in evaluating and developing new mineral deposits; (3) provide data for engineering curriculums in mining schools; and (4) furnish performance and cost data for revising engineering handbooks and for inclusion in engineering textbooks.

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential tobe higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

ON the northern part of the globe, almost since the earliest days of mankind's history. ironmaking has been practiced in one form or another. Some investigators question the generally accepted belief that copper and bronze were in earlier general use than iron, explaining the greater age and abundance of copper relics by their greater resistance to natural oxidation. However, the occurrence of copper in its natural state and its greater ease of reduction from the simpler copper minerals is a strong argument that the making and use of copper came first. Nevertheless, good evidence exists that ironmaking was practiced in ancient India and China, as well as in ancient European countries. Some interesting vestiges of those early operations still survive and have a place, in the background at least, of a discussion of modern blast-furnace practice.

This paper on methods and costs of mining at the Westside mine, in the Tri-State zinc-and lead-mining district (Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma), is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. Methods and equipment used in drilling, loading, and underground transportation have changed radically since the latest Bureau of Mines publications2/ on mining methods in the district were published more than 20 years ago. More efficient methods and machines have been developed in order to maintain low operating costs in the face of rising labor and supply costs and lower grade ore. The rate of conversion to mine mechanization was disappointing at times; local conditions required the development of special equipment, and available rock-moving machines had to be remodeled and strengthened.

Conference themes are usually chosen by organizers to reflect the current state of the industry. The Colorado Section MPD came up with what may be the most appropriate theme of a mining conference during the last few years. The local SME MPD section’s theme of its 56th annual conference was “The Wild, Wild World of Mining.” The current boom can be felt in all aspects of the industry, including exploration, mining, processing, sustainability, and economic and political issues. Each of the 25 speakers at the conference, held in Colorado Springs, CO, touched on how the boom has impacted each of those aspects. The meeting attracted about 110 people from around the world.

The Jamestown Mine is a 6.3-kt/d (7000-stpd) open-pit gold mining operation located in the central portion of California's historic Mother Lode district. Most early production from the Jamestown area occurred in underground operations from 1906 through 1916. Pit production began at Jamestown in early 1987 and continued until July 1994. Although additional mineral resources existed, they were deemed to be uneconomic. About 23.3 t (750,000 oz) of gold were produced from pit operations, compared to 31 t (100,000 oz) from early underground mining. Recent operations at Jamestown included two open pits, a flotation mill and a flotation tailings facility. Flotation concentrates were produced in Jamestown and shipped to Yerington, NV for cyanide leaching in a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit.

The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. This paper presents the results of large-scale fire experiments on evaluating the performances of carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors at low ventilation velocities. Experiments using three different combustibles — conveyor belt, coal and diesel fuel — were conducted in the experimental mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Research Facility. A total of eight sensor stations were located downstream of the fire with each station containing sensors for CO, smoke, carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), humidity, barometric pressure and temperature, as well as two airflow sensors. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.22 to 0.26 m/s (44 to 51 fpm) in the tests. The response times were recorded for the CO and smoke sensors at each sensor station when smoke and gaseous products of combustion from each burning combustible reached the station. The response times of the CO sensors were used to determine the appropriate sensor spacing in the belt entry with a low air velocity. The performance of the smoke sensor was found to be affected by the high humidity in the experiments. The results on proper selection of sensors and the determination of sensor spacing at a low ventilation velocity can be helpful for ensuring sufficient early fire warning for underground workers, thereby improving the health and safety of miners.

Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.

[Internal-combustion engines have been used in Belgian mines for a long tine. As early as 1899, the use of these engines underground was considered, but the general policy was to prohibit such an application unless ministorial permission was granted' in special instances. At that time only gasoline engines were available, and a few of these were installed as stationary engines, although in general they were replaced later by electric or compressed-air motors. However, the number of gasoline locomotives continued to increase. Regulations governing the use of these locomotives soon were formulated and as early as 1920, when a now set of regulations was promulgated, the use of gasoline locomotives in mines could be authorized by the Provincial Inspection Department and no longer depended on obtaining a ministerial decision. Since 1931 this authorization may be given by the Chief Inspector of Mines, Director of the Mining District. Since 1920, safe practices have boon incorporated in the regulations.]

The production of natural abrasives varied in quantity and value compared with 1976. Output of tripoli-type materials was approximately the same in both quantity and value. Special silica stone products decreased in quantity and increased in value. Garnet production decreased both in quantity and value. The production of emery increased and the production and value of manufactured abrasive material was approximately the same. Foreign Trade Imports of abrasive materials were 23% more in value than in 1976, and exports plus reexports increased in value 10%. Net imports, the excess of imports over exports and reexports, were $35.3 million. The volume and value of all abrasive materials exported varied.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense.
