Automatic Charging and Stoking Machines for use at ferroalloy furnaces are in operation for more than 20years. Dango & Dienenthal Maschinenbau GmbH (short: DDS) has developed several machine generations. Today advanced solutions help to achieve better charging and stoking results to minimize cost and to improve the working environment around the furnaces. Three different alternatives can be considered: Rail-mounted solution The machine(s) travel(s) on an overhead monorail to one or several furnaces and is locked in the desired working position from where charging and stoking is performed. Mobile solution This machine travels on the charging platform and is also locked at the respective working position to perform charging and stoking. Automation of a standard mobile charging and stoking machine A standard charging and stoking machine can be adapted for automation. A reliable navigation system is included. Charging and stoking is performed with the moving machine. Advantage versus other solutions: considerable lower investment cost and possibility to upgrade the mobile charging and stoking machine for later automation. Overall, automatic charging and stoking can save up to 10 per cent of the specific smelting energy. A better and more consistent furnace operation can be achieved. Different programs are used to cope with different furnace conditions and changing raw materials. All machine movements can be recorded and correlated to other furnace parameters. Working environment on the charging platform is greatly improved.

"Inco Limited has operated aluminum mine shaft conveyances since 1968. Aluminum conveyances are used where the hoisting in system requires lightweight conveyances to maintain the hoist rope safety factors and mine hoist rope pulls as dictated by government regulations. Inco Ltd. currently has 20 skips (including spares) operating in the Ontario Division mines. The main problems encountered are with galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and metal fatigue. This paper will highlight some of the problems encountered and illustrate methods utilized to overcome the problems and improve the conveyances performance.IntroductionAluminum mine shaft conveyances have been in use at Inco Limited's various Sudbury district mines since 1968. All of the conveyances currently in use are skips used for hoisting mine ore and rock. Inco had an aluminum quick change Kimberley-type skip and cage in operation at its Totten Mine in the early 1970s, but this mine is no longer in operation and no further comment will be made.The primary reason why aluminum conveyances are chosen over conventional steel conveyances is because of their light weight. Typically an aluminum conveyance will weigh about 60% to 70% of a steel conveyance of similar design. The lighter weight conveyances will allow higher payloads to be used and still maintain the statutory hoist rope factors of safety. It must be remembered that increasing the payload will increase the power required to raise the load and the hoist will have to have the necessary horsepower for the increased payload or the system will be overloaded.The front dump (Rola-chute) skips are of the bail-less design, i.e. the box structure also supports the load and has the shaft guide shoes attached directly to the side of the box structure. The Copper Cliff North Mine and South Mine skips have a joint in the centre of the conveyance and are installed in the shaft in two sections and connected with pins. This feature allows very long (42 ft) skips to be used in areas where a one-piece bail-type conveyance could not be installed. It is not practical to make sectionalized bail-type conveyances"

"The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) is a subsidiary of a five-year Economic and Regional Development Agreement, signed on June 11, 1984. The objectives of the M.D.A. are to strengthen and diversify the Nova Scotian mineral industry and to coordinate federal and provincial policies and programs. The agreement outlines the activities and responsibilities of each government, including the division of the cost (60:40, federal: provincial) between governments. The agreement established a framework for joint planning to avoid overlap or duplication of programs.The M.D.A. programs are broadly divided into five sectors (Table 1 and Fig. 1): Geoscience, Minerals Technology, Development, Firm Specific and Public Information. Each sector is administered by a subcommittee composed of one federal member and one provincial member. The subcommittees report to a Management Committee. The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) Management Committee is made up of Dr. Jack Reeves from EMR and Dr. Richard Potter from the NSDME.The Geoscience subcommittee, co-chaired by Peter Giles (NSDME) and William Poole (EMR), manages the regional geologic, geochemical and geophysical studies in the province. Included in this sector are studies into mineral deposits and the basic geological relationships between mineral deposits.The Mineral Technology sector is co-chaired by the authors, Don Doyle (CANMET) and Pat Hannon (NSDME). This sector of the M.D.A. conducts studies into mineral processing, sampling, deposit byproduct commodities and project feasibility analysis."

Iron Ore - Mineral Processing Overview Several years of iron ore price increases, coupled with a period of strong global demand for raw materials, presented iron and steel producers with unprecedented costs and difficulty procuring the demanded high quantities of iron ore. These conditions spurred many companies to investigate new ore bodies and also reassess past decisions (such as divestment of captive iron ore mines that ensured dedicated supply or a move to reliance on the 'spot market' instead of long term contracts with suppliers) and revisit alternative sources of iron units, including low grade deposits, tailings reprocessing, Ti-rich ores, and iron sands. To properly upgrade these iron sources requires a complete battery of mineral processing techniques. Within different regions around the world, operations and technology have developed to specifically beneficiate the local ore bodies. This paper attempts to bring these different general processing techniques together to allow insight into various common and proven methods of iron ore beneficiation. This paper further explores the current trend to develop global iron ore reserves, and discusses the methods to beneficiate and successfully reduce and smelt iron ore using Outotec's physical separation, direct reduction and smelting technologies for final production of pig iron and slag. Use of these various technologies may allow treatment of what was typically considered a tailings stream into a profitable product.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a non-destructive technique that allows the exploration of the internal structure of solid objects in 3D. Over the past ten years, the combination of XCT with more conventional 2D techniques and quantitative 3D image processing and analysis (commonly referred to as digital rocks) has allowed us to address some of the most challenging problems in ore deposit studies. The range of X-ray energies used in XCT allows the X-rays to be transmitted through complex and dense materials including iron ores (eg sinters, lumps, granules). Recent high-resolution XCT scanners have the ability to generate multiscale (25 down to 0.3 µm voxel size) imaging of a given sample enabling the characterisation of 3D textures across a range of scales. This paper will focus on the application of digital rocks to iron ore sinter particles (using filtered polychromatic X-ray beam). The paper is divided into three parts and includes: i) details on the methodologies including their benefits and limitations and the effect of spatial resolution; (ii) the quantification of pore network topology and pore characteristics (eg open versus closed pores, pore size distribution and pore morphologies; degree of connectivity of the pore network and its tortuosity); and (iii) the evaluation of the technique to characterise various phases within the material and quantify 3D mineral textures.CITATION:Godel, B, Ellis, B, O’Dea, D, Honeyands, T and Harvey, T, 2017. While less than 1% of reported mine accidents are associated with slope stability problems, slope failure accidents were responsible for about 15% of U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2003. Small rockfalls, which may involve hand-sized rocks weighing only a few pounds, can cause fatal injuries to workers away from the protection of large machinery. Massive highwall failures containing a million cubic yards of material or more can be fatal even for heavy-equipment operators. As part of an ongoing study at the Spokane Research Laboratory, several remote sensing technologies are being evaluated as tools to assess slope stability and monitor slopes for hazards. An interferometric radar device capable of detecting very small displacements on slopes has been assembled and tested. Radar techniques can provide new tools to augment current methods for monitoring ground control hazards in mines.

The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.

Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the 'fine' and 'coarse' size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and 'coarse' particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

The seismic wave produced by an explosive is very important in blasting. A true understanding of the wave is only important when considering possible structural damage to buildings located near the blast, but it is also of primary importance when considering rock fragmentation. Because of the importance of the seismic wave to fragmentation, a finda-mental study of the seismic wave and its effect was made at the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co.'s mine at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. Strain gages were used to measure the strain in the rock when nearby explosive charges were detonated. The variance in the circuit voltage caused by changes in the resistance of the strain gage was measured with an oscilloscope and recorded with a Polaroid camera. CONFINED DRILLHOLE CHARGES To record the seismic wave from a confined drillhole explosive charge, a gage was cemented to the bottom of a 4-in diam drillhole. The horizontal gage hole and nine horizontal charge holes were drilled perpendicular to the center line of the 2-39 drift and 4 ft above the floor. The gage hole was 29 in. deep, and the charge holes were drilled so that each bottomed 1 in. deeper than the gage hole. The gage was installed with its axis horizontal and parallel to the 2-39 drift. The charge holes had the following horizontal distances from the gage: hole 3, 3 ft; hole 4, 4 ft; hole 5, 5 ft; hole 9, 9 ft; hole 10, 10 ft; hole 14, 14 ft; and hole 15, 15 ft. Figs. 1 and 2 show the relationships of the gage and the charge holes. Charges of 80 pct special gelatin, which weighed 50, 100, and 150 g were exploded in the charge holes and the seismic waves were recorded. All charges were stemmed with 200 g of mud and detonated with an electric blasting cap. Fig. 3 shows the recorded seismic waves. The reflected components of the waves were too weak to be objectional on these records. Table I shows the data taken from the wave forms. The approximate average velocity of a wave with a 9-ft travel distance was 12,900 fps. Since different charge weights were used, it was necessary to scale the data. The scaled maximum compress ion-strain data and the scaled maximum tens ion-strain data are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively. Figs. 6 and 7 show the strain-distance data from Figs. 4 and 5 converted to a 1-lb charge. The results showed that the wave consisted of an initial compression pulse followed by a tension pulse. The amplitude of the tension pulse approached the amplitude of the compression pulse as the distance between the gage and the shot increased. The decay rate of the seismic wave is very important in the evaluation of the blasting characteristics of a rock. When high-amplitude stresses are produced, as in rock fragmentation, the rate of decay is much more rapid than when small amplitude stresses are produced. In underground mine blasting, the burdens are usually not greater than 6 ft and the decay is very rapid. "Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Nbz0 5 ) form a complete isomorphous solid solution series (Simpson, 1937) and this is confirmed by study of polished sections of these minerals, Pehrman (1929) examined a series of five analysed specimens with Nbz0 5 contents as follows:-

500 Folsom Street is part of the new Transbay neighborhood in San Francisco, which is being redeveloped after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged a freeway viaduct; removal of the viaduct created parcels of land available for development. The development consists of a 42-story residential tower with a six-level basement. The slender, core-only structure was designed using performance-based seismic design. Subsurface conditions include undocumented fill, Dune sand, marsh deposits, sand, and clay, all overlying sloping bedrock of the Franciscan Formation. The building is supported on a 10-foot-thick mat foundation approximately 62 to 72 feet below street grades; clay, sand, and bedrock are all present at mat subgrade. Under a portion of the mat, sand susceptible to liquefaction was present. The variable subgrade conditions and potential for ground failure, along with the depth of mat subgrade below street grade, created a challenge for the design and construction team to solve. The ground below mat subgrade needed to be improved to mitigate the liquefaction potential and provide more uniform support. The areal extent and depth of ground improvement necessary to support the mat with an acceptable amount of deformation was determined. Settlement was analyzed and subgrade moduli were provided for design of the mat, with multiple iterations performed to converge between the geotechnical and structural models. Based on the project schedule and logistics, it was beneficial to work from street grade to improve the ground. In order to target the depths below the mat and minimize wasted effort and materials within the depth of excavation, grids of jet grouting were determined to be the most economical ground improvement method; however, it was challenging to install the columns from 65 feet above the top of the target zone. During installation, QA/QC was performed to check that the jet-grouted columns were installed to the design depth and diameter and developed the design strength.

Adsorbed films were formed on polished stainless steel specimens from dilute benzene solutions of two crude oil distillation residua. Although the two residua were extremely dissimilar in composition, contact angle measurements showed that the two films increased the wettability of the steel specimens to oil by equal amounts. Furthermore, the wettability of the films was essentially unaffected by the desorption techniques used. Paraffin deposits were formed from heptane-wax solutions on the same stainless steel specimens. These deposits definitely adhered to the surface. Presence of an adsorbed crude oil film on the metal surface increased its free surface energy and resulted in increased deposition of paraffin. The addition to the heptane - wax solution of small amounts of the same distillation residua that were used to form the adsorbed films resulted in decreased cohesive strength in the deposits formed, which resulted in decreased deposition. The presence of a crude oil fraction both in the solution and as a preadsorbed film eliminated the adherence of a deposit of any kind. A mechanism of deposition is proposed which explains the results obtained. INTRODUCTION The natural formation of any predominantly organic accumulation in oilwell tubing, surface flow lines or other production and storage facilities is called a paraffin deposit. These deposits restrict the production of crude oil, causing a substantial increase in production costs because of decreased flow capacity, expense for periodic deposit removal and unproductive downtime. The conditions under which such deposits form, their physical characteristics and the nature and severity of the problem created are extremely varied. Over the past several years, much progress has been made in developing and utilizing methods to remove accumulated paraffin deposition. However, like so many other problems, the basic stumbling block appears to be a lack of understanding of the fundamental mechanism involved in the formation of such deposits. Crude petroleum is known to contain considerable quantities of polar, surface active substances which Doddl has shown to be present at the oil-water interface. Denekas, Mattax and Davis2 observed that the wettability of reservoir rocks was drastically altered by exposure to crude oil fractions; and Zisman, et a1.3 showed that the nature of the compounds adsorbed on a surface would determine its wettability characteristics. Cole and Jessen4 and Ehrig5showed that surface wettability can have a profound effect on the magnitude of paraffin deposition, and Parks6 demonstrated chat the presence of certain adsorbed films on a metal surface would reduce the adherence of paraffin to that surface. Zisman7 has since advanced the theory that the conditions for adhesion are the same as for wetting. Therefore, it was felt that there was adequate evidence to support the supposition that adsorption of compounds from a crude oil might play an important part in paraffin deposition. ADSORPTION-WETTABILITY EXPERIMENTS Initial experiments were conducted to determine the effects of adsorption from solution of crude oil residua on the wettability of a polished stainless steel surface. Distillation residua with initial atmospheric boiling points of 700F were used in preference to the whole crudes in order to concentrate on the molecular weight range of interest, and to eliminate the possibility of composition change due to evaporation of the light ends. Also, these high boiling materials would be expected to be adsorbed from the whole oil in preference to similar compounds of lower molecular weight.

The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. In the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area, the layered rocks have been subdivided into two sequences, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower sequence is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and large acid sills. The upper sequence is unconformable on the lower one.In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and pass into conglomerates. Th:s passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds.These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked by areas of shore-line conditions.Repeated igneous activity, including vulcanism, has occurred along the flanks of this basin. These different igneous and sedimentary environments have played an important part in the primary distribution of metals.A chronology of all basic and acid igneous activity, as well as sedimentat:on, has been established for the Precambrian of this area.INTRODUCTIONThe subdivision of Archaean rocks into those of basic igneous or of sedimentary origin has formed the basis for the nomenclature appearing in past literature.
