This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C. 1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

The subject of many discussions and technical papers in the last 20 years has been the prediction of the well-bore pressure gradients that are required to induce or extend fractures in subsurface formations. The subject merits this attention because of the frequently recurring problems that arise from an inability to predict fracture pressure gradients. Encountered in several common types of operations in the oil industry are problems associated with the prediction of formation fracture pressure gradients. When wells are being drilled in both new and old fields, lost circulation is often a very troublesome and expensive problem. Complete loss of circulation has been disastrous in some cases. Many times, such disasters could have been avoided if techniques for calculating fracture pressure gradient had been employed in the well plans, and if casing strings had been set, and mud weight plans had been followed accordingly. In areas of abnormally pressured formations, the prediction of fracture gradients during the well-planning stage is extremely important. In fact, it is as important as the prediction of formation pressure gradients, which has received a great deal of attention in recent years. There are several published methods used to determine fracture pressure gradients. However, none of these methods appears to be general enough to be used with much reliability in all areas. In 1957, Hub-bert and Willis published a classical paper that included the development of an equation used to predict the fracture extension pressure gradient in areas of incipient normal fau1ting.l Overburden stress gradient, formation pore pressure gradient and Poisson's ratio of rocks were the independent variables that were shown to control fracture pressure gradient, the dependent variable. In 1967, Matthews and Kelly published another fracture pressure gradient equation that is different from that of Hubbert and Willis in that a variable "matrix stress coefficient" concept was utilized.3 Later the same year, Costley wrote about a similar idea.5 Goldsmith and Wilson used a least-squares curve-fitting technique and field data from the Gulf Coast area to correlate fracture pressure gradient with formation pore pressure gradient and formation depth.' They noted that the fracture pressure gradient increased with increasing depth while the pore pressure gradient remained constant. In each of these cases, the problem for which a solution was sought was to determine the bottom-hole pressure gradient required to initiate or extend a fracture. Results of the previous work show that fracture pressure gradient is a function primarily of overburden stress gradient, pore pressure gradient, and the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress. There is argument for a fourth variable in that in many cases breakdown fracture pressure gradient is greater than the fracture extension pressure gradient. Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4010(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mobs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 percent and the alumina from 22 to 33 percent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

The solid solubility of magnesium in the close-packed modifications of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, gadolinium, dysprosium, and lutetium was determined from approximately 250°C to the eutectoid temperature by the X-ray parametric technique. The maximum solubility at the eutectoid temperature was found to be 9.4 at. pet in La, 8.2 in Ce, 9.2 in Pr, 8.2 in Nd, 14.1 in Gd, 13.5 in Dy, and 11.5 in Lu. The solubility when compared at a homologous temperature was found to increase in a smooth manner with decreasing size factor from lanthanum to lutetium. It was found that the apparent atomic radius of magnesium when dissolved in the lanthanide solvent was constant and could be accounted for by consideration of several models dealing with departures from Vegard's law. The eutectoid temperatures for the lanthanide-rich La-Mg, Ce-Mg, and Nd-Mg systems were found to be 544", 505°, and 551°c, respectively. A study of the solid solubility of magnesium in the lanthanide metals was initiated because the valency and electron egativity difference are essentially constant and favorable for solid-solution formation, and thus one could examine the effect of size on terminal solid solutions. The size factors based on metal radii range from 14.6 pet for lanthanum to 7.5 pet for lutetium. Since the electronegativity difference is small, 0.06 unit or less, application of the Hume-~othery' and Darken and Gurry2 criteria for solid-solution formation indicates that the solubility of magnesium would be expected to be small for lanthanum (between 5 and 10 at. pet) and to increase as we proceed along the lanthanide series. A search of the literature revealed no data on the solubility of magnesium in the lanthanide metals except for the solubility of magnesium in cerium at 450oCA typical phase diagram for the lanthanide-rich end of the lanthanide-magnesium phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Preparation of Alloys. The lanthanide metals used in the preparation of alloys for this investigation were prepared from the corresponding fluoride by metallothermic reduction techniques previously described by Daane.4 The chemical analyses of the metals used are listed in Table I.

"Many power-based grinding models exist, and most operators are familiar with Fred Bond's ""third theory"". Bond's model is most commonly used to describe primary and secondary grinding to product sizes above, for example, 100 µm. Operators sometimes use Bond's equation to describe grinding in situations where it is not appropriate, such as fine grinding below 50 µm. Using an alternative model would be a better choice in this situation.Bond's equation is one in a large family of models. Related equations better suited to fine grinding include the “signature plot”, Von Rittinger's model and Charles' equation. These models have a similar form to Bond's and can be fit to industrial regrind mills and laboratory tests using the simple regression tools in the charts of computer spreadsheets. Operators will find that fine grinding calculations are both easier and more accurate when using the alternative equations to fit their regrind milling surveys or when performing laboratory regrind mill scale-up for plant design.None of these models are new: Charles' equation was published in 1957 and Von Rittinger's model was proposed in 1867. A quick refresh how to apply these equations can turn these oddities from the undergraduate curriculum into useful tools for plant optimization. They can be fit to any type of mill including stirred and tumbling ball mills.IntroductionBuilding a case for fine grind modelling requires reviewing some theory before building a framework for doing fine grinding calculations. The actual calculation procedure recommended is easy and can be applied by plant metallurgists. Don’t be frightened by the theory; the end result is reasonably simple.The observation that mineral breakage is related to the absorption of energy is usually attributed to Von Rittinger (1867). Lynch and Rowland (2005) describe that the ability to empirical test and calibrate energy models of breakage didn’t exist until the widespread adoption of electric motors in the mining industry during the 1930’s and 1949’s. A series of technical papers published by the Allis Chalmers company during the 1940’s demonstrate that they were attempting to do such a calibration using Von Rittinger’s model which is usually stated as: “the energy consumed in the size reduction is proportional to the area of new surface produced.”"

In general a term "unconventional mining or "non-traditional mining technology" getting more and move familiar to the mining engineering media. There are several alternating terminological combinations such as "in situ mining", "borehole mining", "shaftless mining", "mineless mining", "geotechnology" etc.; specific terms denote particular method of unconventional mining technology: "underground coal gasification in situ", "underground coal combustion in situ", "borehole hydraulic coal mining" and others. Principal scheme of unconventional coal mining technology is shown in [Figure 1:] One of the greatest potential for coal utilisation during the beginning decades of on coming cetury is the synthetic fuel-gas derived from coal as a product of coal gasification. It is quite logical to enrich this gas before burning it with natural gas, that is methane, contained in coal measures. Thus it is reasonable to suggest a new concept of unconventional coal mining and utilization technology featuring integrated methane drainage with coal-gas combined cycle. Proposed unconventional technology of coal mining is characterized with: - opening up a coat deposit through boreholes, drilled from the surface and used for coalbed methane drainage as well as for coat gasification in situ; - aggregation of methane producing and coal gasification station on mining side with thermo power plant on the electric power generation side in one integrated industrial enterprise. The further improvement of the conventional coal mining technologies both surface and underground could give only insignificant results in economical, ecological and social aspects, but would not be able to provide basic requirements of the XXI-st century. Significant increase in economical efficiency, cardinal humanization of coal mining and basic improvements in environment protection would be achieved through introduction and implementation of innovative or unconventional coal mining technology. These considerations are applied on both coal production and coal utilization sides as far as coat based energy generation is concerned. Now a general opinion is widely spread that an application in the same manner of the traditional technologies of coal mining and electric power generation would inevitably cause further irreversible damage of the global eco-system, notwithstanding the certain environment protection measures being taken. Keeping the recent pace of the eco-system degradation the whole our civilization would be in danger. Thus the solution of this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing in industry unconventional coal mining and modern advanced clean coal technologies. Coal reserves with favourable conditions at shallow depths are -being rapidly depleted in all countries with developed coal industry. So in nearest future more coat will be mined from deeper levels with higher operational expences and with lower labour productivity. For example in Russia only 20% of proven coal reserves can be specified in quality as easy mined reserves, i.e. coal reserves with a good minability. Unconventional (borehole in situ) coal mining enables us to mine difficult coal reserves, deposited under unfavourable geological conditions with higher economical and socio-ecological efficiency than that in conventional coal mining, in view of these the basic principles and concepts of coal mining and coal utilization for energy generation should be reconsidered taking into account the latest achievments in underground coal gasification/combustion, coalbed methane extraction, clean coat technology and advanced developments in environmental engineering. The authors have developed a new concept of ecologically clean and resource saving coal-gas electricity, protected by a patent of Russian Federation (1995). The main principles and technological features of these conceptual technologies are explained hereupon. It should be a break through into a coal mining technology of new generation, which is known as unconventional coal mining technology. Under current global energy policy, transection to the new generation of coal mining technology is inevitable. Now we are standing at the treshhold of the coat's regeneration based on integrated unconventional coal mining and innovative coal fueled electric generation technologies.

This article presents the results of an analysis of grinding of 1:1 mixtures of 4x8-mesh quartz and limestone in laboratory ball and rod mills. From these experiments, the amount of energy consumed in grinding each component of the mixture was determined. In the ball mill, limestone consumes slightly more energy than quartz in the initial stages of grinding, but as the grinding proceeds quartz begins to consume a slightly greater fraction of the energy. The postulate that the fraction of energy consumed by any material in a ball mill is proportional to its volume fraction has been shown to be approximately true. On the other hand, in a rod mill energy consumption by quartz and limestone is equal only in the initial stages of grinding, with energy consumption by quartz greatly exceeding that by limestone as rod milling proceeds. Preferential energy consumption in tumbling mills has been discussed in a number of papers. For example, from an analysis of the kinetics of comminu- tion in ball mills, Arbiter and Bhrany' obtained rate equations based on the postulate that only coarse particles are ground, indicating that fine particles are protected from the action of the balls by coarser particles. In rod mills this protective action is much more pronounced than in ball mills. Recent studies on the rod milling of limestone-quartz mixtures have shown that this protective action causes the mineral with the lowest grindability (quartz in this instance) to consume the greater fraction of energy. 2 However, in the ball milling of mixtures it has been postulated that the consumption of energy by one of the constituents is determined by its volume fraction within the mill. 3 Possibly this hypothesis may be a simplification of the ball milling of mixtures since the protective action suggested by Arbiter and Bhrany may result in some preferential energy consumption by one of the constituents of a mixture. The objective of this study has been to determine preferential energy consumption in laboratory ball and rod mills by analyzing size distributions of each material in the products obtained from grinding 1:l mixtures of quartz and limestone. Over the last few years as the coal industry has seen an increase in the price of coal, a renewed interest in the additional mining of pre-law highwall sites has occurred. Much premium coal and property remains behind these pre-law highwalls but access to mining is limited because prior mining used auger machines to remove coal from under the highwall. Older augers seldom reached more than 200 feet and often no more than 100 feet but this zone of auger holes destabilizes the highwall to where additional mining is often unsafe. If the reserve is large enough, the highwall can be stabilized with common flyash and cement grouts to form a face-up for an underground mine but this expensive method is usually not practical for continuous use with a highwall mining machine. It is estimated there are hundreds of miles of highwall riddled with auger holes where the coal reserve available is ill-suited for deep mining for a variety of reasons. However, these same properties are ideal for additional mining with state-of-the-art highwall mining machines that have a reach up to 1200 feet, except to the relatively thin auger mined de-stabilized zone. The renewed interest in highwall mining these properties has driven research into finding an economical way to stabilize the highwall so the highwall mining machine can recover additional coal. This research discovered and fine-tuned a process that is economical and is successfully supporting the highwall at a highwall mining operation. This paper discusses the research involved in determining the strengths need, the methodology used to place any grouts, the effect on mining plans and the increased recoveries. ARMPS-HWM is used extensively in this research. The failure of the highwall, when not grouting, and the success, when grouting using the new materials and equipment utilized, confirmed the ARMPS-HWM method.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V,Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

The ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system consists of nine shafts (three intakes and six exhausts). Three surface based axial fans ventilate the mine configured in a blowing arrangement. Following the ventilation survey airflow quantity, frictional pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics have been quantified. An accurate resistance survey has been conducted to calculate the pressure drop with regard to moving cages and skips in the shafts. This paper discusses the benefits of utilizing high accuracy digital pressure transducers and psychrometers in a ?leapfrogging? survey to gather data needed to build the computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFD are currently idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model has been used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease the overall operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study has been conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next fifteen years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

"The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

Utilizing a very large database from a mined-out area on a South African gold mine, the relative efficacy of a method to mitigate the smoothing effect introduced by the algorithmic constraints imposed by kriging was investigated. Smoothing effects arising from limited data availability are differentiated from the smoothing arising from the application of estimation algorithms. Very little can be done to ameliorate smoothing of estimates because of too little data, barring additional drilling or sampling. However, the smoothing effects resulting from the kriging process are shown to be mitigated by use of an alternative algorithm. The primary criterion in the development of the new algorithm was to avoid re-introducing conditional bias. This paper examines firstly the smoothing effects introduced into estimates via the kriging covariance matrix, secondly the process for ameliorating the smoothing effect, and finally it uses a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm on a very large database. The database was used to introduce a 60 m by 60 m drilling pattern which in turn was used to model the semi-variogram and produce 30 m by 30 m kriged block estimates. The follow-up database was then re-introduced (roughly 5 m by 5 m grid spacing) and averaged into 30 m by 30 m blocks to provide a direct comparison with the initial estimates. In this way the extent of smoothing and accuracy of the estimates before and after the corrections was tested.

During the preliminary design phases and feasibility study of a proposed vertical shaft, a vertical diamond drill-hole is normally drilled on the site. This paper outlines how rock mass characteristics, in-situ rock stress, rock strength, hydrological characteristics, and structural parameters can be determined using wireline logging of this borehole. In addition, a rock mass classification scheme is developed, based on published work, and in particular the Q-factor is adapted to assess the stability of raise-bored shafts. The ‘stick plot’ is introduced, which combines all geotechnical parameters applicable to the stability of a vertical shaft into a colourcoded format where cross-correlations can readily be made on a day-today basis during the shaft-sinking process.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:
