In an effort aimed at monitoring mining-induced stress changes that may influence ground failure, the US Bureau of Mines conducted a series of active 3-D seismic tomographic surveys at the Homestake (Lead, South Dakota) and Lucky Friday (Mullan, Idaho) mines. Existing rock bolts were used to mount geophones and as strike points for introducing seismic energy using a 3.6 kg sledge hammer. Travel time measurements were recorded spanning up to 160 m between drifts at several levels. The tomographic uncertainty was minimized by computing iso-velocity surfaces of constant probability based on statistics from multiple reconstructions and a threshold criteria. Periodic imaging using tomographic velocity surfaces demonstrated that temporal and spatial changes in the local stress field occurred in response to ground failure and stope advancement at a gold and silver mine, respectively. The performance of the most common type of low-intensity dry magnetic separator is analyzed on the basis of fundamental physical principles. Expressions are developed for estimating the optimal choice of design and operating parameters for beneficiation of magnetite ores. By proper choice of these parameters either a high-grade concentrate or a low-grade tailing can be produced from an incompletely liberated feed.

The underground voids that result from mining provide opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD). Such disposal could solve many environmental problems. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. The US government is now planning on using specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. Using the experience gained from the domestic projects that are now in preparation and from foreign repositories that are now in operation, US mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

The existence of local room-temperature plastic flow in germanium, which has been a subject of controversy for nearly two decades, has recently received renewed attention, albeit no more agreement than hitherto. Phenomenologically one major facet of the problem has been reduced to the question whether or not indentation can be effected in germanium without the introduction of cracks. That plastic flow can be induced at room temperature by fracture appears to have been rather convincingly demonstrated recently by Suzuki and Kamada and by Noble and Henisch.1 The literature contains both direct and incidental references to Vickers and Knoop indentations showing no cracks, within resolution of optical microscopy. Recently, however, following a controversy on the subject,2,3 johnson4 made a study of indentations produced by spherical indenters and concluded that these are accompanied by cracking. Rock fragmentation by blasting still remains the most common and cost-effective method of excavating hard rock in mining and tunneling operations. During blasting, the dynamic stresses induced by the detonation of the explosive, in addition to fragmenting the rock in the vicinity of the blast, may fracture the rock at considerable distances from the point of detonation of the explosive. The fractures can result in reduced mine safety, increased costs to support the opening, low productivity and perhaps high ore dilution. Besides the dynamic stresses produced in the rock, air blast overpressure pulses are generated and propagate through the network of underground mine openings. The waves, unable to spread out spherically or hemispherically like blast waves from surface blasting, are forced to propagate by reflection from the roof, ribs and floor down the drift. Blast wave focusing can occur and produce intense shock waves that could damage ventilation barriers such as cement block stoppings.

Application of an SEM-based methodology suggests a reason for past contradictory results on the relationship between quartz and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Results indicate that coal seams with the same bulk analysis of quartz have different amounts of surface-available quartz. Our research shows that the amounts of pure and surface-available quartz in a respirable dust vary directly with the rank of a coal seam, except in the case where rock materials are mined. The estimated amount of surface- available quartz therefore provides a measure of the quartz-related fibrogenic potential of a respirable dust.

A method of improvement of a subsoil under bored pile base by injection is presented. The method employs a special chamber attached to the reinforcement at the bottom of the drilled borehole. The chamber is made of semi-permeable textile bag. The injection entered under high pressure into the bag, causes prestressing of subsoil under the pile base. The results of load tests of piles improved in this manner have shown a substantial increase of their capacity together with simultaneous reduction of settlements. This technology has been implemented for four constructions such as trestle bridges in Gdynia and Warszawa and the bridges in Szczecin and Gdansk. The injection effects are shown based on the load test results.

Concern for the environment by the public and by mining companies, has led to many recent attempts to revegetate areas disturbed by mining activities. The problem of successfully revegetating disturbed areas and mine wastes is often difficult, even under favourable conditions. Under the severe conditions that prevail in and and semi-arid parts of Australia, such difficulties may be extreme. An approach is described in which field trials are used to investigate factors which adversely affect revegetation and to evaluate optimum methods and treatments..A wide range of methods suitable for use in and situations is described. These include grading and cultivating operations, topdressing with natural soil materials, selection of suitable plant species, mulching and the use of fertilisers and supplementary irrigation. It is concluded that such a programme provides the best approach to this complex and expensive problem.

The flotation behavior of Florida phosphates was studied using statistical design of experiments to evaluate conditioning parameters and their effect on flotation performance. The solids loading, conditioning time and agitation speed during conditioning were identified as the important variables affecting the reagent coating onto particles. Flotation of the conditioned slurry was carried out at fixed collector dosage and flotation conditions. Phosphate recovery upon flotation was statistically modelled as a function of the conditioning variables. The results indicated that the conditioning variables had an interactive effect on the phosphate flotation performance. Statistical optimization revealed two conditioning regimes in which optimum flotation recovery was obtained. It was determined that optimal recovery can be obtained at lower conditioning energies.

The new OSM regulations for ground water monitoring of underground coal mines have been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level, but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion still exists within the industry as to what is really required. Based on submission and/or approval of more than 30 monitoring plans for existing mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, three basic sections are necessary. They are: 1. background data on the hydrogeologic setting of the mine, 2. the monitoring plan itself, and 3. mining procedures to minimize adverse effects on ground water. Like all of the OSM requirements, ground water monitoring will be a new burden the coal industry must bear, but with proper planning and communication with the regulatory authorities it need not be as bad as originally feared.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.

Catalytic purifiers are widely used as exhaust treatment devices on diesel equipment in confined spaces. The paper summarizes some studies carried out at the University of Lulea on diesel exhaust purifiers. The main purpose has been to elucidate important chemical activities of catalysts useful for the improvement of their effect. The effects of platinum catalysts on exhaust constituents such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned gaseous hydrocarbons, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are discussed. Also pointed out are the great differences in catalyst activity and advantages/disadvantages associated with the catalysts.

Sand bed filters are used to remove large and small particles from liquid streams. The large particles are removed by the straining action of the filter bed and the small particles are removed by particle deposition on the surface of the bed particles. Particle deposition, while being essential for the filtering action of colloidal particles, is not the only process that occurs in the filter bed. Other processes that occur are (1) the substrate becomes filled with particles limiting further deposition, and (2) some deposited particles are resuspended. The sum total of all these processes determine the performance of a filter bed.
