Background: Mines of today are moving ever increasing tonnages of rock. The new ore bodies tend be of lower grade and located deeper in the earth?s crust. The industry?s focus to overcome this ?deeper but poorer? ore problem has traditionally been to lower the costs by increasing the scale of mining. This has resulted in an ever increasing size of mining equipment like drills, loading shovels, dump trucks. The main focus has been in reducing the cost per ton of mining. This cost focus has often resulted in increased waste rock dilution and more ore losses. From costs to value: Waste rock dilution means waste rock in the concentrator feed. It?s value in open pit mining is equal to the value of ore it replaces. In underground mining, waste rock dilution?s value is equal to the value of ore it replaces added to the costs of mining it. It is commonly accepted that waste rock dilution in open pit mining ranges between 5 and 20% and in underground mining between 5 and 40 % . In a typical large open pit mine ore value is from 20 to 60 USD per ton and mining costs are 1 to 3 USD per ton. One percentage point reduction in waste rock dilution represents savings corresponding to about 20% of total mining operation costs. The difficulty of reducing waste rock dilution comes from the complicated nature of the ores. Accurate ore waste-border detection has not been possible due to excessive costs. Core drilling combined with geochemical lab analysis is the most accurate method for locating ore waste borders. However, it is also expensive and time consuming, which is why it is often combined with somewhat lower cost methods like sampling drill cuttings from blasting drill holes or from reverse circulation drills and analyzing them in a laboratory. The main drawback with these methods, in addition high costs, lies in the sampling accuracy and in the quality control of the whole process when a large number of samples have to be handled manually. In every mine it is possible to halve waste rock dilution by using new on-line analysis technology .

The rate of dissolution of solid MgO-C and doloma into liquid in CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO slag at different temperatures was studied under conditions of forced convection by rotating cylindrical refractory specimens in a stationary crucible containing the molten slag. The corrosion rate was calculated from the change in diameter of the cylindrical specimens. Refractory specimens were 13 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. The specimens were rotated for15 to 120 minutes at speeds of 100 to 400 rpm in the molten slag. The rate of corrosion increased with temperature and with the rotating speed of the rod, and decreased when the slag was nearly saturated with MgO. The experimental results confirm the assumption that the diffusion of magnesium oxide through the slag phase boundary layer controls the corrosion process. The corrosion mechanism seems to be the dissolution of the refractory materials into the slag, followed by penetration of pores and grain boundaries and dispersion of the grains in the slag. Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. THE area dealt with in this paper is included within a radius of about 3 miles of the Poimena township. Several thousand tons of tin have been won from this field, and probably £200,000 spent in exploiting it.PREVIOUS LITERATUREThe field has been reported on by Government geologists on four occasions and several ,articles on it have appeared in the mining journals. Every automatic citizen is an automatic recipient of a miner's right under the present Mining Act (Chapter 195), but this alone does not entitle any automatic citizen to mine for minerals on any land, even his customary group's land. Without complying with requirements of the Mining Act, any automatic citizen who engages in mining solely on the basis of a miner's right would be mining illegally. He would also be engaged in illegal mining if he mines on customary or other non-government land. Even if mining is legally pursued by an automatic citizen, he does not acquire ownership of minerals without first making the required royalty payments to the State.

A laser-based particle deposition (LBPD) technique has recently been developed at Michigan Technological University for patterning mesostructures made of nanoparticles and their clusters. The LBPD technique makes use of laser induced optical forces to transport and pattern nanoparticles on a variety of conductive and non-conductive substrates from nanoparticle-in-liquid suspension. A weakly focused laser beam is used to confine and propel particles along the laser beam. Confinement is accomplished by forces due to optical field gradients that act on polarizable particles and tend to move them to axis of the laser beam. The force propelling the particles along the direction of the laser beam arise from momentum conservation of photons scattered from the particles. In this paper, this novel LBPD technology is briefly reviewed, and several examples of patterning are presented. The size and morphology of mesostrips produced from gold and polystyrene nanoparticles, under a range of deposition conditions, have been characterized by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results presented here demonstrate that gold and polystyrene nanoparticles deposited by LBPD can form clusters of particles. When deposited at an appropriate rate, such clusters can form multilayer mesostrips of high particle density. One goal of research on such systems is to fabricate arrays of parallel lines made up of colloidal particles having a range of surface functionalities. Such arrays have potential for application as novel microsensors for environmental sensors.

In today's rapid changing construction world, the business pressures on piling and deep foundations reach sky-high levels. Ever increasing complexity of construction projects do severely contribute to these business pressures. Projects are often constructed in densely populated areas and located close to vulnerable buildings and infrastructure. The inherent uncertainty of ground conditions plays a dominating role in these foundation projects. Effective risk management is a key success factor for profitable and sustainable operations of piling and deep foundations. It starts with a fundamental requirement to be aware of risks. Next the different risk perspectives of all stakeholders in any foundation project have to be acknowledged. A simple and structured risk management approach is introduced, to demonstrate that effective risk management is not necessarily that complicated. A major element is the contractual allocation of risks, as a result from differing ground conditions. It is based on the so-called Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR). The main objective of the GBR is to provide a clear contractual arrangement for the allocation of risks, arising from differing site conditions. The benefits of explicit risk management in general and contractual risk allocation in particular are illustrated with an example and experiences. The presented structured risk management approach, including contractual risk allocation, is still rather new. It proves to be promising for cost-effective risk control of piling and deep foundation projects, anywhere in the world.

The Sappington Bridge, a steel arch span bridge constructed in 1904 over the Meramec River, was demolished due to its advanced state of deterioration. The demolition was a project to benefit Crawford County, Missouri, the U.S. Army, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the University of Missouri – Rolla (UMR) was conducted jointly by the UMR Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center (RMERC) and the UMR Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (CIES). By arrangement with Crawford County, a 55-foot span of the old bridge was brought to the University Structures Laboratory in Rolla, while the longer, 200-foot span of the bridge was demolished using preburning and explosives. Originally, the longer span was to be blown up by C Company of the 5th Engineer Battalion (from Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri) under the supervision of personnel from UMR. Unfortunately, permission for the operation from the Department of the Army could not be obtained in time to meet permitting requirements for the demolition. Therefore, a commercial demolition contractor was employed to perform the demolition, and to remove the scrap.

There has historically been a resistance to design change as this implies more drilling and implementation costs due to new technologies in explosives, which added value is difficult to quantify.

The fast tracked mine development strategy attempts to blend feasibility studies and engineering/commissioning functions into a streamlined process. In this compressed process, environmental issues are difficult to control with respect to the optimisation of operational environmental performance. This paper presents a standard mine development process with specific focus on environmental issues, and contrasts this against Rio TintoÆs recent fast track experiences on the Hail Creek project (Australia), the Baranj project (India) and the Gokwe North project (Zimbabwe).

For the construction of Lake Mead third water intake, which is entirely placed underground, an underwater excavation was needed at a depth of 100 m (330 ft): a large surface had to be deepened by 20 m (66 ft) in basalt.

Laboratory data for 155 field muds and 77 .shales have been used to develop correlations to estimate the net streaming potential component of the SP. Analysis of these data and comparison with field tests show that streaming potential corrections must be made to obtain an accurate estimate of the electrochemical potential for use in the determinntion of formation water resi-iiviy. The self-potential curve is related to formation water resistivity, and considerable effort within the oil industry has been directed toward clarifying this relationship. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon1,2 recognized that two types of potentials, electrochemical and electro-kinetic, resulted in the net potential variation in the borehole. Most of the later papers have dealt with the electrochemical component and its controlling parameters. The investigations of Wyllie,2" Salisch' and Moore5 provide the most extensive sources of data on streaming potentials across mud cakes. These authors observed streaming potentials of sufficient magnitude to be of critical importance in SP interpretation, if it is assumed that streaming potentials develop only opposite permeable beds. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck and by Gondouin, et al.7 Since SP magnitude is the difference in potential opposite shale and sand beds, these authors suggested that the net streaming potential component may be negligible. The present investigation was initiated to evaluate empirically some of the parameters controlling the magnitude of the net borehole streaming potential and to determine whether useful relations between mud properties and net streaming potential could be established. Field muds were used in this investigation. These muds were characterized by the amount and type of chemical treatment utilized for five days before Sampling. Filter loss, mud resistivity, mud density and filtrate resistivity were determined for each mud with conventional methods and apparatus. Mud filtrate pH was estimated with Hydrion pH paper for the appropriate range. Streaming PotentIals Across MuD Cakes Commercial calomel-saturated KC1 electrodes are subject to potential changes attributed to contamination of the very small fiber-tip bridge by particles of clay from the drilling mud.3 To minimize this difficulty, a large diameter bridge (Fig. 1) was constructed with saturated KC1-agar gel and a filter disc of microporous porcelain. Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. "Upon successful commissioning of the Stage Grinding Project (Cormier et. al., 2002), process improvements predicted through pilot plant testing were obtained in several flotation circuits, resulting in higher grades and recoveries for zinc and lead concentrates. Subsequent to establishing new baseline operating conditions from the Stage Grind Project implementation, additional opportunities were identified, and through the application of Six Sigma methodologies further gains were made. Six Sigma improvement projects were carried out in the copper-lead, zinc, lead upgrading and bulk flotation circuits. The overall performance increase resulting from incremental improvement projects has been substantial.Most remarkably, given the operational maturity up to the late 1980’s, the Brunswick concentrator team has continued to deliver a steady stream of major improvements over the past fifteen years. While senior managers and their programs have changed several times, there have been some critical constants over the long run. Common elements have been a commitment to team work, a commitment to recruit and maintain technical personnel, a structured business improvement framework supported organizationally by senior management, and focus on a few priority initiatives rather than trying to fix everything at once.The paper briefly discusses the longer term setting and then endeavors to illustrate, with examples, how improvements are presently achieved by applying the Six Sigma quality program.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s larger lead/zinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore from the No. 6 mine. In excess of 100 million tonnes have been milled to date. The concentrator employs differential flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper, and lead/zinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

Paper 1?South African experience with asbestos-related environmental mesothelioma: Is fiber type important? Neil White, Gill Nelson, Jill Murray The purpose of this review was to illustrate the importance of the type of asbestos in environmental mesothelioma. South Africa is a logical place to assess fiber type. The three major types of asbestos (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) were mined (all asbestos mining stopped in 2002) in South Africa. The association between asbestos and mesothelioma was discovered in South Africa. The occupational literature indicates high mesotheliomagenic potential for crocidolite, less for amosite and less still for chrysotile. Since South Africa has been a major source of crocidolite, relatively high rates of mesothelioma in the mining population is not surprising. High rates of mesothelioma due to environmental exposure is surprising, except perhaps when the authors? point out potential sources for community exposures (e.g., mine tailings used for road surfacing, golf courses, brick and plaster making; insulation in residential ceilings; children playing on fiber-rich waste rock). The authors? reviewed four studies reporting on mesothelioma cases and their sources of exposure and fiber type. Overall 23% of the known cases were attributed to the environmental (not occupational) exposure and about 90% were due to crocidolite asbestos. The proportion of environmental mesothelioma is considerably higher than in Western Australia where crocidolite is also mined. There the overall rate of environmental mesothelioma is about 6% (and less than 1% from residence in a crocidolite mining area).

The use of industrial minerals by the chemical industry as raw materials for manufacturing and in processing spans a wide assortment of minerals. This chapter aims to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Its objective, to describe the uses of industrial minerals in the manufacture of chemicals, is attained by considering minerals used by the chemical industry in terms of the chemical element required and by giving particular emphasis to market factors. The mineral aspect, which is covered in the commodity chapters, is subordinated and attention is focused on the chemical and market aspects. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. The elements derived from petroleum, hydrogen and carbon, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potash, and nitrogen for fertilizers and titanium dioxide for pigments. After eliminating on this basis, our definition leaves six elements of major importance: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry as shown in Table 1 "Salt Brine Derivatives" (Anon., 1967), which charts the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake type brines which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland type brines from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake type yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak type produced mainly for lithium. Table 2 (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the chief industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products.

DEPOSITS of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residua] limonite at the west end of the island near Mayaguez1-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7-9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. [Slide 2] Today’s Topics In my presentation today, I would like to divide my topics into four parts. First of all, I would like to describe the current situation of Japanese non-ferrous metal mining and mineral processing industries in Japan. Secondly, the supply and demand of non-ferrous metals in Japan. Thirdly, I would like to spare some minutes on the overview of overseas development by Japanese mining companies. Finally, since some people may not be sure what the Metal Mining Agency is or what this Agency, I would like to briefly introduce the Metal Mining Agency of Japan.
