Coal mines and mining-, as well as metal and nonmetallic mines and min¬ing, are not inherently unsafe, although mining people think they are and would like to have everyone else think so. It is now being demonstrated that mines can be operated with essentially as much safety as any other major industrial enterprise; but most mining people, including workers as well as officials, have been slow to realize or admit this. In the past, and with most people even at present, the idea has prevailed that it is utterly impossible to operate a mine without accidents. Although, as in all other kinds of industrial activity, it is true that some injury is likely on occasion to occur to some workers and an extraordinary accident may occur to one or more persons under exceptional conditions, mines can be operated with few if any accidents if a reasonable amount of the right kind of precautionary effort is exerted and kept in effect.

Absorption, emission and reflection techniques for the study of [molten] inorganic materials at high temperatures have been critically examined. In general, the reflection technique is the most satisfactory for tine study of pure materials, while the absorption, and possibly also the emission techniques, may be useful for studies of certain dilute solutions. In the present investigation infrared emission spectra for sodium nitrate and silver chloride were obtained together with absorption spectra derived from reflectivity data by the method of Robinson and Price for sodium nitrate, silver chloride, lithium and potassium fluoride and their 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1 mixtures and for solutions of zirconium tetrafluoride in lithium-potassium fluoride (1:1) and sodium-potassium fluoride (1:1). It is concluded that vibrational spectroscopy cannot give unambiguous information concerning the existence of complex ions in fused salt, mixtures.

The first record of coal discovery in Australia dates back to 1791 when escaping convicts found coal in the banks of a creek just south of Newcastle. Development in the Newcastle Coalfield was the sole source of supply for the colony and for export until the 1850s when mines were established in the Southern & Western Coalfields. The important Hunter Coalfield was not discovered until 1873 when coal was found at Rixs Creek near Singleton: The first exploration drillholes were commenced in 1799 using drilling equipment obtained by Sir Joseph Banks. From 1820 to 1850 several famous geologists (naturalists), including the Rev W. B. Clarke, J. D. Dana and Strzelecki, wrote reports on the coal measures in New South Wales. The first Government Geo- logist, Samuel Stutchbury, was appointed in 1850. The major coal deposits of the State are contained in Permian Coal Measures in the Sydney-Gunnedah and Oaklands Basins. Coal quality ranges from high volatile, high moisture thermal coal at Oaklands to low volatile hard coking coal in the Southern Coalfield. Most coalfields can provide a range of steaming and coking coals.

L'affinage des grains dans les alliages d'aluminium consiste à augmenter le nombre de sites de cristallisation de la phase a-Al afin d'obtenir une structure fine. Les alliages mères de type Al-Ti-B sont largement utilisés comme raffineurs des grains. Cette étude a pour but d'établir des mécanismes convenables d'affinage des grains dans l'alliage A356 en utilisant cinq alliages mères et deux températures de coulée (750°C et 950°C). Les résultats montrent que la phase a-Al prend une forme selon l'alliage mère ajoute; les échantillons coules a haute température montrent une taille de grain plus grosse; les températures de germination et de croissance augmentent avec I' augmentation du Ti ou du B et la taille des grains diminue. L'alliage mère Al-4%B montre une puissance remarquable en comparaison d'autres alliages mères. Pour cet alliage mère, le titane résiduel dans l'alliage A356 réagit avec le bore pour former TiB2 qui, par la suite, agit comme un germe actif pour la phase a-Al.

"Since the late 1990s, increased prevalence of severe lung disease among US coal miners has been observed, particularly in central Appalachia where thin-seam mining is prevalent. While respirable silica exposures have been implicated in many cases, the available dust monitoring data from mines shows no explanatory trends. One possible factor could be differences in the relative toxicity of silica particles based on their surface condition. Previous research has indicated that particles with occluded surfaces (e.g., by a thin layer of clay) may be less toxic than those with non-occluded surfaces. However, this dust characteristic has not been investigated before now in central Appalachian mines. In the present study, 18 respirable dust samples from seven central Appalachian mines and two northern Appalachian mines were analyzed to assess the relative occurrence of surface-occluded silica. Results showed that the dust from central Appalachian mines actually had higher fractions of occluded silica, which may be due to extraction of large amounts of rock strata along with the coal. However, the central Appalachian mines also more silica particles overall (i.e., occluded + non-occluded) in terms of total number percentage of respirable particles.INTRODUCTIONResurgence of occupational lung disease among US coal miners, especially in the central Appalachian region, has been observed since the late 1990’s (Gibson, 2016; Zosky et al., 2016; Suarthana et al., 2011; Gamble et al., 2011; Antao et al., 2005; Attfield & Sexias, 1995). In addition to increased prevalence of simple Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”), the prevalence of severe and rapidly progressive disease has risen dramatically (Almberg et al., 2018; Blackley et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2016, 2014; Graber et al., 2017; Cohen et al., 2016). While exposures to respirable silica have long been known to cause or play a role in diseases such as silicosis or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is conventionally considered as the most advanced form of CWP, it is unclear whether silica is the only culprit in the recent outbreak of severe disease. Indeed, as disease rates have risen, both total respirable dust and silica concentrations generally appear to have declined since the late 1980s, based on regulatory monitoring data in the most affected mining districts (i.e., MSHA coal Districts 4, 5 and 12, which cover central WV, eastern KY and southwestern VA, and southern WV, respectively) (Figure 1). Of course, the latency of disease can vary and may be or more 10 years, but many of the most recent cases are likely to have resulted from exposures that occurred since the late 1980s."

SOME small vanadium-bearing deposits on the west coast of British Columbia about 100 miles north of Vancouver are of interest for several reasons. They are of a type that is, so far as we know, unique. They are difficult to identify as being vanadiferous so that, unless they are described, other similar deposits could easily pass unrecognized. Furthermore, although none of them has as yet been proven to be of commercial proportions, no good reason is apparent why larger, and therefore valuable, deposits should not occur under similar geological conditions. The original discovery on Quadra island was made in 1932 and has been recorded by H. V. Ellsworth and H. C. Gunning (l). Since 1932, prospecting in the area has revealed other similar deposits, one about a mile south of the original and another some ten miles to the east, near Menzies bay on Vancouver island. The Quadra Island showings are a mile and a half north of the head of Gowland harbour, a small inlet that is easily reached by gas boat from Campbell river, about four miles to the southeast on Vancouver island. The deposits were examined by the writers in the spring of 1943 in connection with field work sponsored by the Department of Geology, University of British Columbia. We are indebted to Mr. G. A. Dirom and Mr. Lothrop, of Vancouver, for helpful data on the Menzies Bay deposits, and to Dr. V. Dolmage for making a brief trip to Gowland harbour and discussing the deposits.

En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. Le REMM a été enregistré le 6 juin 2002 et publié dans la Partie II de la Gazette du Canada le 19 juin 2002 (SOR/DORS/2002-222).

"The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many it is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the Portland Monson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In the Monson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry),a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

Detailed regional geophysical and geochemical surveys, ground surveys and drilling were undertaken to follow-up the federal-provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program (URP) over the 27,OOO-km2 Kasmere-Munroe area in northwestern Manitoba. An analysis of the URP data showed a fair correlation between the regional airborne radiometric results and lake-bottom geochemical results, both of which also correlated with the regional geology. More detailed surveys defined anomalies with greater precision within the broad zones outlined by the URP. The ground follow-up indicated that URP anomalies can be caused by varying degrees of uranium concentration in the rocks. Mineralization of interest was found in leucogranites at several locations within the survey area. Anomalous uranium concentrations were also found in coarse pegmatites and Hudsonian granitic intrusions. It can be concluded that large-scale regional surveys can be followed up in relatively short periods of time to yield meaningful results if a properly planned exploration sequence is employed, each stage of which successively narrows the area of interest.

Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

According to the Darcy?s law, filtration rate should increase with increasing pressure drop (?P) across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, ?P is created by the free water present on the surface of a filter cake. Thus, ?P can become negative when the free water disappears from the cake surface, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In the present work, we have developed methods of overcoming this problem by either increasing the air pressure inside or applying vacuum outside a centrifuge. Laboratory dewatering tests conducted using these provisions showed that the moistures of various minerals and coal fines can be reduced to the level that can obviate the need for thermal drying. The new concept has been successfully tested both at pilot- and full-scale, which lead to commercial deployment through Decanter Machine, Inc., under the trade name Centribaric® centrifuge. THE preparation of this paper is in response to many requests for in-formation on the mining and smelting developments which have been carried on for the past three years or more by the Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation of Canada. By way of introduction, the following paragraphs, relating to the early history and present status of the chrome-mining industry in the United States, are of interest. They are quoted from Bulletin No. 76 of the California State Mining Bureau, published in August, 1918: 'Chromium was discovered about 1797 by a French chemist, Louis Nicolaus Vauquelin, in ore from Siberia. From that time until 1827, the Urals, in the region of Ekaterinburg, supplied the chromium used in . Europe. In the summer of 1827, as the historian advises us, Isaac Tyson, Jr., saw in a Baltimore market-place a cart containing a cider barrel, which was held from rolling about by some heavy black stones. He had made a study of such stones at the first-known American locality, the Bare hills near his father's home, six miles from Baltimore, and he recognized the black stones as chromite. On inquiry, he found the chromite came from the Reed farm in Harford county, 27 miles northeast of Baltimore. At this time, Tyson was one of the very few men in the country who knew the value of chromite, and in the next few years he took full advantage of this knowledge. He immediately bought the Reed farm. He found about 30 tons of float-ore on the surface, but there was no outcrop of ore in place. Never-theless, he sank a shaft, and at a depth of eight feet struck an ore-pocket which proved to be 80 ft. long, 25 ft. wide, and 8 ft. in maximum thickness. His next discovery was of placer chromite in the sands in the beds of brooks on an estate called Soldiers' Delight, 16 miles northwest of Baltimore. Thus far, Tyson's observations had shown him that chromite occurred apparently only in serpentine areas. His explorations were now leading him farther afield. In 1828, he found on the Wood Farm, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, a deposit of float chromite which led him to lease the ore-right of the farm, which he finally purChased in 1832. Here he developed the famous Wood mine, the largest single producer of chromite in the world.

An experimental investigation was carried out to study the rates of reduction of iron oxides dissolved in liquid Ca0-SO2-A203 slags by Fe-C droplets at temperatures ranging from 1325 OC to 1550 OC. The %FeO in the slag was varied from 5.5 to 18. Flash X-ray images were employed to observe the behavior of Fe-C droplets in the slags during the reactions and for determining the slag-gas-metal interfacial area. Effect of P205 in the slag and sulfur in the droplet was also investigated. The reduction rates were determined by measuring the volume of CO evolved as a function of time and the estimated slag-gas- metal interfacial area. The reduction rates have increased with increasing %FeO in the slag and the slag temperature. Statistical data on injuries in the metal and nonmetal industry of the United States first became available to the Bureau of Mines by collecting reports from the operators for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1954, is the 31st publication (1933-34 was published as Bulletin 398) containing statistical data on injuries at metal and nonmetal mines and related plants, and it 1s the first such bulletin to be published since 1942. The last publication was Bulletin 461, Metal and Nonmetal-Mine Accidents in the United States, 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1943-53 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries and related employment at metal and nonmetal mines, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to submit such information. Therefore, all materials submitted are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. The figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, nevertheless, every effort has been made to make them so, and the data given are believed to be representative of the hazards to which metal and nonmetal workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are comparable as between States-which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

An experimental investigation on the kinetics of oxidation of As(III) with H202 in synthetic effluent solutions followed by precipitation of Fe/As (V) compounds was carried out. The variables investigated were: As concentration (200 -3000 mg/l) , oxidation pH (2.0 -11.0), oxidation temperature (25 -800C) , H202 stoichiometric excess (50% -100%), precipitation pH (5.0 -7.0), precipitation agent (Fe2+ -Fe3+). Fixed conditions were, Fe/As molar ratio (6:1) and stirring speed (560 rpm). The results were empirically modelled. The precipitates obtained were amorphous. The precipitates were checked upon their environmental stability according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.E.P.A.) Toxicity Test, and were considered to be adequate for deposition in impermeable waste dumps. The combined Fe/H202 detoxification process, in selected conditions, was able to reduce the As contents of effluents containing 1600 mg/l As to 0.1 mg/l, in about 2 1/2 hours of total processing time.

Introduction The Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is the principal source of ore for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Current production amounts to about 2,500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore a year. With approximately 1,600,000 feet of percussion drilling and 700,000 feet of diamond drilling being carried on each year, any improvements in drilling practice are important. Testing of new equipment and drill bits is a major function of the Testing Department at the mine. Tungsten carbide bits have been the subject of many tests since 1947 and have been used in operations since 1948. This paper details with the methods of testing and gives comparative data on performance and costs for tungsten carbide bits as compared to steel bits. Operational use of tungsten carbide bits started in April, 1948, and the extent of application has increased considerably since that time. The scale of employment is illustrated in Table I, which also shows other statistics on the use of carbide bits. Up to the present time eighteen types of carbide bits or tipped steel, as made by six different manufacturers, have been tested. In general, one supplier's bits have been used in operations, but some large-scale operational tests have been carried out with other types. The types tried are shown in Table II. To date they have been, the subject of 33 tests, covering the destruction of 804 bits over an observed footage of 42,586 feet.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as de- rived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems. Plans in the second area of interest--that of relating communications to mining operations-- were to observe mining operations and usage of communications; to gain insight through interviews with mine management, from mine superintendents to section foreman; and to look for correlation between communications, production, and safety. Lastly the communication systems needs and requirements were determined from first hand interviews of mine personnel, from the analysis that lead to the individual reports on the eight mines, and from an overview of all of the mines studied. The latter was done to find commonality between the needs of the individual mines such that system requirements having the greatest universal value could be derived, thus lowering per-mine cost of equipment through economics of scale. Armed with tape recorders, backgrounds in communications technology, and with an interview questionnaire that was improved as experience was gained, engineers visited the eight mines to obtain the raw data from which the needs and requirements could be developed through analysis. During the first part of the program two days were spent at each mine so that interviews and tours could be completed, and so that full eight hour shift phone usage recordings could be obtained for statistical analysis. One day visits were sufficient for those trips where tape recordings were not made. During the later trips less attention was given to the statistical nature of communications, and more to how communications relates to the total mining operation.
