PRESIDENT SORENSON: The meeting will come to order, gentlemen. I note from the program here this morning that you were supposed to have an address by the president. I can assure you, gentlemen, that the president is not going to make an address, so you don't need to squirm in your chairs. I do want to say it's certainly a pleasure to be here. I am sorry that I wasn't here last year. Apparently my absence lent consent, and I think it would be a good warning to every member of the organization to be here for all the meetings for your own protection! It's always a pleasure to be here and meet again with some of our old friends and meet a lot of new ones. It always interests me at these meetings to meet with the rugged individuals that operate the coal industry. They have to be rugged; they couldn't be any other type of men and live in it. I also know that it takes a good rugged man to fight this game nowadays. I feel that the men who operate the coal industry are fighting a battle against socialism. You all know we are the first industry they have their eyes on. If they take over our industry, they will take over everything else.

Established in the 60-ies, the Zlatna Panega quarry is a cement raw materials quarry supplying 95% of the needs of the Zlatna Panega Cement Plant with limestone, marl and other silica-aluminates. The two major types of raw materials are formed by accordingly dipping strata of Upper Jurassic limestones and lower Cretaceous marls. Between them there is a ?transition-zone? or ?contact-zone? of a high-silica content layer, about 5-m thick, defined as ?flint? by investigations including spot sampling throughout the quarry. For many years this ?contact-zone? layer was neglected due its negligible thickness. Further, with the increasing demand on the quality of the raw materials feed to the Plant and the focus on variability of the chemical and mineralogical components, it was decided not to mine any of the parts of the quarry contaminated by this material, for about three years. The latter had an impact on the availability of operating benches that could result in a substantial decrease in the total recoverable re-serves of Zlatna Panega, particularly with respect to marls. There were considerations for resorting to a partial, selective excavation of the quarry pit with a reduced lifetime for the lime-stones and re-opening of an other (currently in-active) marl quarry at a distance of 6 Km from the Plant. The Quarry Team of the Zlatna Panega quarry was assigned to study the problem. The ?contact? layer was duly confirmed with systematic geological (including mineralogy) studies, statistical analysis of available data, surface sampling and shallow exploration drills, resulted into distinguishing a third type of reserves and their credible subsurface delineation by means of geological 3-D modeling and quarry design. A new quarry design was finally elaborated with a view of providing flexibility in mining, utilization of the total volume of all available reserves and maximizing the mine life of Zlatna Panega quarry. An industrial test took place in December 2005, by using the contaminated parts of the quarry (co-mining of the ?contact-zone? materials) at a contribution of 15-20% in the raw materials mix, as dictated by their contribution in the total recoverable resources of the quarry. The purpose was to investigate the viability of this solution ? in line with improved quarry planning ? without compromising the quality of cement production and the efficiency of Plant Operations. Results were overall successful.

SILICON, unfortunately, is not in the same category as some other metals with respect to the absolute value of the highest purity material prepared. Tucker, in England, and Becket, in this country have devel-oped procedures for the purification of silicon, and Becket's process has made industrially available silicon of a purity of 99.8 per cent or better. However, even the term "silicon metal" may be a paradox to some people, although not more so than the term "amorphous" as applied to silicon. These terms come from commerce, and "metal" is used to distinguish industrially high-purity silicon from ferrosilicon, silicon-aluminum, and other high-silicon alloys. Alloys of iron and silicon with 95 per cent Si or less are known as ferrosilicon, with a designation of silicon content where necessary, and the terns "silicon metal" is invariably applied to the grades containing 96 per cent Si and higher. The Becket method of purification was referred to in a monograph on the Alloys of Iron and Silicon, and the Tucker procedure was described in some detail in that publication.1 In order to get silicon of still higher purity, a sample, prepared by the Becket method, analyzing 99.84 per cent Si, 0.020 Fe, 0.016 Al, 0.005 Ca, 0.025 C, 0.033 per cent 02, 0.006 H2, 0.006 N2, and 0.001 per cent Mn, was crushed to pass a 100-mesh sieve said further purified by a modification of Tucker's procedure. This modification differs from Tucker's method in that after treatment the 100-mesh alloy was centrifuged to remove the last traces of acid. Our directly determined analysis of this purified sample shows: Si, 99.952 per cent; Fe, 0.009; Al, 0.012; Ca, 0.003; C, 0.006; or 99.982 per cent. Silicon by difference equals 99.97 per cent. The variation between silicon by difference and silicon as directly determined is important. Although Tucker mentions the amount of insoluble matter in commercial silicon both before and after his treat-ment, he does not mention the existence of carbon in the alloy; neverthe-less, lie reports silicon by difference. The formation of alloyed regions near the surface of metals using ion implantation is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a means of providing corrosion resistance using much smaller amounts of the strategic alloying metals. Two ion implantation systems that can implant low-energy chromium, nickel, or aluminum ions into low-cost substrate materials such as iron or carbon steel have been designed and constructed. The development of the ion source, ion beam acceleration stage, mass analysis system, and target chamber are described in detail. The ion-implanted alloys have been characterized using proton-induced x-ray emission to give the total number of atoms implanted and to determine the extent of any surface contamination introduced by the ion implantation process. Research conducted at other laboratories on metallurgical applications of ion implantation is given.

This paper describes the special problems that occur with the construction of diaphragm walls and discusses the lessons learned during the repairs of structural walls. Although diaphragm or slurry wall technology and equipment has vastly improved since its development in the late 1950?s, significant problems still occur. Key issues are repairs related to panel joints between wall panels, concrete defects associated with tremie concrete problems, leaks and other defects at tieback reservations or inserts, wall leaks within the plane of the wall and surface repairs. The paper supports the position that diaphragm walls are relatively watertight when properly constructed, but cautions that it is necessary to address potential problems in the design stage and allow for flexibility in construction so that the problems that occur can be corrected once encountered. Due to the fast track nature of most projects the time available for design, detailing and construction is limited. As a result, insufficient attention to detail by any of the responsible parties can lead to imperfections and defects in the wall. The authors describe the nature of these problems and their potential resolution based on ?lessons learned.? The timely response to wall problems is essential to the successful completion of a diaphragm wall project. Appropriate repairs have resulted in largely successful jobs starting with the World Trade Center in New York City. The authors? total 80 years of experience as the engineer of record and designer, inspector and contractor?s representative for the diaphragm wall results in a unique insight to deal with these problems.

The Eve Mills deposit is in Monroe County, Tenn., near the southeastern corner of the State. The deposit was examined in February 1943 by a Bureau of Mines engineer, and drilling the property was recommended to increase the on: reserves enough to justify mining should war needs require it. The deposits were explored, by 32 diamond-drill holes totaling 11,649 feet during the periods from July 1943 to November 7, 1945, and from April 1944 to August 17, 1944. The drilling campaign disclosed a large area of mineralization. The ore, however, is apparently confined to long, narrow sheets. The indicated grade of the ore bodies blocked cut by the Bureau of Mines is 4.o8 percent zinc and 2.10 percent iron.

Recent research by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that the segregation process has merit for treating oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores. The process comprises heating the crushed ore with salt and coke or other carbonaceous materials at about 700° C. to produce fine flake copper, which then is recovered by conventional copper-flotation methods. Bench-scale laboratory tests of a number of oxidized and mixed copper ores assaying 0.78 to 5 percent Cu gave copper recoveries of 73 to 96 percent. The flotation concentrates assayed 21 to 76 percent Cu, depending on the ore being treated.

Mine abandonment is associated with the securing of access to underground workings, shafts, raises and adits. Waste rock piles and tailings are generally contoured and revegetated. When the waste materials contain pyritic material seepages can often emerge long after the physical reclamation work has been carried out. Their extent and origin has to be delineated to facilitate remedial measures. The depth to which the seepages extended can be determined with an electromagnetic (EM) survey. This paper reports on the experience gained using a winter and a summer EM survey correlated with measurements of specific conductivity at the sediment water interface. Lake sediments and ponds which represent a homogenous background material are good media, where specific conductivity and electromagnetic conductivity can be correlated. The origin of the seepage within the recontoured mine site requires detailed site knowledge, as many anomalies in heterogenous materials such as represented by a mine site are evident.

The continuous need for infrastructure expansion forces the mining industry to develop underground structures into more sensitive and violent environments. When underground excavation enters into deep and high stress rock conditions, geotechnical designers find themselves faced with the difficult task of selecting a rock support system that will meet today's stringent requirements. Whatever support system is chosen, it is mandatory that potential rock movement be controlled. All this has intensified the development of safety systems and new, unique solutions which can enable construction companies to go both, further and deeper, without reducing the level of safety. To address these needs, Atlas Copco developed the Roofex® bolt, specifically designed to withstand large static and dynamic deformations under prespecified load conditions. The Roofex Rock Bolt acts as stiff support up to a designable load level before the sliding effect of the mechanical frictional system is triggered and allows highly controlled rock mass movement without loosing the support function.

Sludge ponds of fine coal, fine soil, and water created behind large piles of coarse coal waste can present hazardous conditions; this is a Bureau of Mines report of the subsurface physical property data developed on the fine coal waste materials that make up the core areas of two typical coal waste impoundments. These data will help define more completely the engineering properties of this problem area of the structures. Additional calorific, chemical, and mineralogical data were obtained on the coal waste materials to determine possible uses or development of byproducts. The possibility of extracting alumina from coal ash was also investigated.

"The cathodic kinetics of aluminum deposition from aluminum chloridealkali chloride melts was studied by use of electro-cnemical transient techniques at 700 °C. Aluminum deposited as an insoluble product on a glassy carbon electrode and as a partly soluble product on a tungsten electrode. The deposition was found to be a simple diffusion controlled process involving the exchange of three electrons. The diffusion coefficient of aluminum chloride was calculated - 4.sx10-s cm2 ·S-I in AlCl3 -NaCl-LiCl melts and 2.6x10-s cm2 ·S-' in AlCl3 -NaCl-KCl melts. For AlCl3 -NaCl-CsCl system the diffusion coefficient exhibited some uncertainty due to nucleation. The determined rate constant of aluminum deposition reaction was on the order of 10-' -10-2 cm'S:' Constant potential electrolysis was carried out. TiB2 was well wetted by aluminum. The species of melts penetrated into graphite and glassy carbon but not into tungsten. The diffusion coefficient of species in glassy carbon was evaluated.IntroductionAluminum chloride electrolysis is attractive for its power saving of 30%. Different process to circumvent the conventional chlorization to obtain aluminum chloride economically, such as directly chlorizating mixture of Al~03 and C in a cell with A-shaped laminated bipolar electrodes by rising chlorine (1), or by use of a composite anode (2), will promote the electrolysis technology to be realized industrially. With the appearance of the Alcoa process periodically there are studies on the kinetics of aluminum deposition. Some discrepancies seem to exist on the mechanism of aluminum deposition. Borne studies (3,4,5) showed that the deposition of aluminum was hindered by diffusion process in the melts. M.Gabco et a1. (6) claimed a preceding dissociation of a complex being the rate controlled step. This paper presents our results on the mechanism of aluminum deposition from the study by use of transient techniques and some results from constant potential electrolysis."

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. For 10 years, the author has been engaged in a program of geologic mapping of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, for the U.S. Geological Survey. Initially, two 1:63,360-scale quadrangles were napped by traditional methods of traverses by foot and by tracked vehicle, supplemented by reconnaissance from a light aircraft owned and piloted by the author. Five summers were required to map those two quadrangles, which lie north of the tree lice in typical Arctic climate. In 1967, the project was reoriented toward the reconnaissance capping of four 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, with helicopter support to be used for cart of each of four summers amounting to about 45 hours time per support year. The light aircraft was use-,' to support the field operations. Over the year,, the aircraft was used in progressively more geologic tasks, culminating in 1970 with a successful field test of rudimentary devices made to collect soil, rock, and sediment samples while the aircraft remained airborne. Additionally, an attempt was made j- 1970 to prepare reconnaissance geologic maps entirely by the use of the light aircraft combined with foot traverses [fr??], the landed aircraft. Several such maps, prepared at the rate of about one 1:63,360-scale quadrangle per day, were checked from a helicopter by an impartial observer end were found to be sufficiently accurate for reconnaissance mapping when reduced to 1:250.000 scale.

"The aim of this research work was to produce biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) from canola oil using KOH loaded on y-Al203 support as a heterogeneous catalyst. Different parameters such as effects of the molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst amount and reaction time on the yield were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterization of the catalysts. A biodiesel yield of 86.67% was obtained under catalyst preparation and transesterification conditions of calcinations temperature of 773 K, 4 h of reaction time at 338 K, and using 3.5 wt% catalysts and molar ratio of methanol/oil of 15:1. The leaching of potassium species in the spent catalyst was observed.1. IntroductionBiodiesel is an eco-friendly and alternative energy source for diesel engines that can be synthesized by transesterfication of vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohols [1 ]. There are four principal approaches to the synthesis of biodiesel involving the transesterification of the triglycerides of the plant oils and animal fats: base catalysis [2], acid catalysis [3-5], employing supercritical alcohol conditions [6] and enzyme catalysis [7]. The commonly used homogeneous catalysts are NaOH, KOH and their alkoxides. Homogeneous alkali-catalyzed transesterification is much faster than acidcatalyzed transesterfication [8]. However, a large amount of water is required to transfer the catalysts from the organic phase to a water phase after the reaction. Therefore, it is considerably more costly to separate the catalyst from the produced solution [9]. These disadvantages could be removed by use of a heterogeneous catalyst [10]. The use of heterogeneous catalysts eliminates the neutralization step, hence it results much easier to separate from liquid products. Also, they can be designed to give a higher activity and selectivity and to have longer catalyst lifetimes [11]. A large number of different heterogeneous catalysts have been synthesized for biodiesel production. For example, calcined Mg-Al hydrotalcites [12], zeolite and metal catalysts [13], metal oxides such as calcium oxide (CaO) [14], magnesium oxide (MgO) [15], zirconium oxide (Zr02) [16], and supported catalysts [17] have been investigated as heterogeneous catalysts. CaO and MgO are most frequently used heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production [18]. In this present work, we aimed at developing an efficient catalyst for transesterification of canola oil. We have prepared KOH/ Al203 by impregnation and applied to determine the optimum conditions for biodiesel production. Three different variables including reaction time , alcohol to oil molar ratio and catalyst loading with may influence the quality of the produced biodiesel were optimized. Moreover, SEM (scan electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF were used for characterization of the catalysts."

"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick . A detailed deep seismic survey will be necessary to substantiate the structure and resource estimates"",Maceral and coal quality percentage diagrams of five column samples of these seams (the 7 Foot and 13 Foot Seams of Inverness Equivalents) show a bright banded coal, high in reactive macerals, which will produce a weak coke unsuitable f or metallurgical purposes. A thermal coal with a rank of H. V. ""B"" Bituminous (0.64% Ro) is present, averaging 12000 btu llb (6 660 kcai/kg), 10% ash and 6% sulphur, of which 60 to 80% is derived from pyrite.Microlithotype profiles of the major Mabou and Inverness coals show characteristic successions that can be used f or seam identification and proved valuable f or structural interpretations.The time of faulting in the major fracture zone on the eastern margin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Basin has been deduced from coal rank variations. It occurred in pos tPermian, probably Early Triassic time."
