Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. The examples given are the Beat-son, Birmingham district, Mineville district, and Cornucopia.

"The closure of the iron and steel making plant at Consett in Durham in 1980 marked the end of an era-a long era in the world's iron and steel making history. Iron had been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century.The paper describes sites in the area that first worked the bloomery process and then, in the 16th century, as did most of Europe, graduated to the blast furnace process. The main emphasis is on the early introduction of coal to iron making at the end of the 18th century and the use of the steam engine to render integrated sites possible.IntroductionIron has been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from clear evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century. Good coking coal was available from West Durham and reasonable coal from the Tyne valley and Northumberland limestone. Limestone was plentiful."

The purpose of this paper is to present certain data and observations resulting from a series of experiments dealing with the heat treatment and microstructure of commercial white cast iron and its derivative, malleable iron. In planning the experimental work, particular pains were taken to secure for the tests white cast iron of "normal" composition; i.e., within the composition limits commonly prescribed by manufacturers of malleable castings. A review of the literature leads us to believe that much data of a fragmentary character treating of the graphitization of white cast iron have been of little value, mainly because of the diversity in chemical composition of the materials employed in the tests. Moreovcr, when feasible, annealing periods at least comparable to those of current practice have been adopted. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the members of the research department of the Eastern Malleable Iron Co. for the white cast iron used in the test's and, particularly, for their active cooperation during the experimental stage of the work. In this paper the following subjects will be discussed in the order indicated: Data on the thermal critical points of white cast iron and malleable iron. Changes produced in tensile properties and microstrue.-ture of white cast iron by annealing at different temperatures within the, range, 760 to 1100° C. Relation of thickness of wall section of hard iron to microstructure and tensile properties of malleable iron obtained under normal annealing conditions. Notes on mechanics of graphitization of normal white cast iron as observed in specimens quenched after various periods of anneal at approximately 800" C.

"The increasing use of coated magnesium in consumer products results in creation of coated Mg scrap during product manufacture and after End-of-Life product treatment. Currently this material is generally not recycled, leaving a material resource unused. Closure of the magnesium cycle in a sustainable manner is necessary. In order to do so, the effect of coatings on the recycling process has to be quantified, predicted and minimized. For this purpose metrics have been developed, based on first principles supported by detailed understanding of the recycling process. The developed 3D metric enables quantitative assessment of the recyclability and links coating design, product design and recycling to each other in a visual manner. The parameters that form the metric can be measured and predicted, hence an engineering basis for Design for Sustainability of coated magnesium is provided.IntroductionEvery product progresses through the four phases of the product life cycle depicted by figure 1. In each phase residues are created. Their amount and composition is largely determined by the complex material combinations created/invented during product design in the manufacture phase. Compared to the ideal cycle the magnesium cycle is far from closed (fig. 2). Most noticeable is absence of the link between the EoL phase and raw materials production. A closed cycle only exists for class 1 scrap, which goes from the product manufacture phase directly to production from industrial material and returns to the manufacture phase as magnesium alloys. The four problematic streams are marked by ???. Coated semi-products are present in two of the four residues, namely in rejects and collected scrap. When these semi-products are recycled the amount and composition of the dross and salt slag residue is affected as well.During product design selection of the coating takes place, fixing the coating character¬istics and properties from this moment on for the rest of its life cycle. The choices made in the manufacturing phase are therefore critically linked to the recyclability of coated semi-products as well as the sustainability of the magnesium cycle as a whole. Sustainable closed life cycles, in which the quality of materials is preserved and residue creation and resource depletion are minimized, can be attained by selecting the appropriate alternative during product design. To realize this the effect of design choices on the life cycle and more specific the recycling process has to be known and quantified."

The use of solid fuel in shaft furnaces to indurate iron ore pellets was originally considered a necessary evil, which the industry worked long and hard to eliminate. Since then changes have taken place in furnace design and operating practices that have led us to our suggestion that solid fuel additions could again be used. In essence, what has happened is that the developments which made it possible to operate without solid fuel have also created new operating conditions favorable to the effective use of solid fuel. Because these new conditions* were brought about in part by the desire to eliminate solid fuel and because the development was a gradual one, the industry failed to reassess its position and for years neglected the possibility of returning to solid fuel.

In this Bureau of Mines study, sealants containing mineral wool, cement, etc, were sprayed through dry-process equipment that propels dry material pneumatically to the water-adding nozzle. Advantages over slurry applications include no mixing, no extensive cleanup, and freedom from hardened cement in equipment should power be lost. Sealants with large mineral wool nodules (>l-inch) were sprayable at rates to 900 square feet per hour for 1/2-inch thickness with little dust and smooth material flow through equipment, but they were weak for mine use, Materials containing small wool nodules (1/4-inch) were stronger but tended to plug lines because the nodules were inadequately separated in the shredder. Increasing the dedusting oil also increased line plugging by holding the nodules together in larger lumps. Best results were obtained using a 3/4-inch-nodule wool with cement binder, which provided both smooth flow through the machine and adequate strength.

"The Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy located a drillhole at Riverside Corner, Hants County, Nova Scotia, to examine the stratigraphy, structure and potash potential of the Kennetcook River gravity low. This evaporite-related gravity anomaly is one of the largest virtually unexplored gravity anomalies in Nova Scotia. The drillhole intersected a structurally complex sequence o flower Windsor Group ('B' Subzone) evaporites. Downhole geophysical wireline logs were used, in conjunction with detailed lithological descriptions, to interpret the structure and stratigraphy of the sequence. Similar application of total gamma ray, density, caliper and neutron-neutron log responses allows stratigraphic correlation of Windsor Group carbonate marker units separated by up to 35 km in Cape Breton. This work confirms the value of downhole geophysical logs as a tool in the exploration of evaporite deposits regardless of the presence or absence of high quality core. INTRODUCTIONThe exploration methodology for evaporite (specifically salt/potash) deposits in eastern Canada (and worldwide) is relatively simple: identify a negative gravity anomaly within a favourable geological setting, Windsor/Cordroy Group sediments in eastern Canada, and drill it (Anderle, 1980). Although this is an obvious oversimplification of the necessary expertise in the planning and complet ion of an exploration program, those familiar with potash exploration drilling can attest to the risks and expense, in terms of time and problems , associated with the location and drilling of diamond-drill wildcat holes. Potash exploration programs in eastern Canada, their results and inherent difficulties, have been documented by Anderle et al. (1979), Cooper (1981), Dekker (1982), Carter and Boehner (1986), Carter (1988) and Carter and Anderle (in prep .).Downhole geophysical wireline logs have become an important tool in the stratigraphic and structural interpretation of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada and, in many cases, represent the only information recovered or the only information available due to the drilling method (rotary) and/or the long term instability of evaporite cores. This paper documents examples of downhole geophysical log responses which, combined with detailed lithological examination of drill core, or in the absence of core, are used in the interpretation of the complex lithology and structure of a deformed evaporite deposit. Geological and geophysical data from the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (NSDME) Riverside Corner 85-1 drillhole are presented here as a partial case history and prime example of the use of this method to interpret the complex structure of an evaporite deposit. Drilling of NSDME Riverside Comer 85-1 was conducted in late 1985and early 1986by the Department (Carter and Boehner, 1986) under a program to assess the potash potential of selected areas of the province as part of the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement 1985-89. A reinterpretation of a portion of the available data from two exploration drilling projects on Cape Breton Island in the Canso-Bras d'Or area is also presented (see inset, Fig. I). Several drillholes have intersected the Windsor Group evaporite sequence in these areas and the available geophysical logs are a valuable tool in the interpretation of the structure of the deposits. However, no attempt has been made to present or discuss the detailed geological investigation and comparison of these two deposits. They are presented here as an example of the reinterpretation of existing data and their application to stratigraphic correlation and structural interpretation of complex evaporite deposits. Further work is necessary to document the stratigraphic and structural correlation of these two areas."

Early smelter campaign data is presented and compared to design. Some modifications to the basic design of the furnaces and gas trains are indicated, with their respective impacts on improving smelter performance.Plant compactness, the use of jumbo tanks, and a highly automated electrode handling system are featured in the refinery description, with brief coverage of the liberator and slimes leaching sections. It can now comfortably process over 13,000 metric tonnes per day largely as a result of the addition of a fourth circuit in 1978."

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors In coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

"As shortage in the supply of mineral commodities become more probable, there is an increasing need for reliable and comparable reserve/resource data. It is therefore necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedure by quantifying the three basic criteria in resource evaluation: economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For the portion of fairly well documented deposits and as far as their geologic parameters are concerned, geostatistical methods can considerably improve the quality of ore classification. In respect of economic feasibility and recovery, approved geostatistical methods can be introduced directly into the classification procedure. The concept of geologic assurance, however, requires a new interpretation in terms of geostatistical error spread. As the ""risk"" in estimating an ore parameter is also a function of the respective block size, it is reasonable to define not only upper limits for the risk intervals for each class of uncertainty, but also block dimensions which reflect the typical stage of planning associated with the different ore categories. An algorithm has been developed to block out areas inside a mine or a large panel which satisfies the constraints of an ore category in respect of the risk intervals of a parameter and in respect of their size. The method has been computerized and is demonstrated on a massive copper-nickel deposit.IntroductionFacing an uncertain future with respect to the demand and supply of mineral commodities, both governmental authorities and the mining industries show an increasing interest in a useful framework for the assessment and classification of the remaining mineral resources"". This is reflected by the recently published appraisal and classification scheme of the United Nations as well as by the new or revised classification systems of the USA; Canada or Australia. DOMESTIC production of carbon black increased 4 percent in 1962 to 2,056 million pounds. Furnace black output was 8 percent, or 132 million pounds, above that in 1961 and accounted for 90 percent of total carbon black production. Channel black output continued to decline and was 55 million pounds less than in 1961. Carbon black shipments during the year totaled 2,082 million pounds and were 5 percent above those of 1961. About one-fifth of these shipments were exported; the balance were sold domestically. An increase of 180 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decline of 80 million pounds in exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1962 was $145 million. The average value per pound of 7.06 cents was 0.24 cent per pound less than in 1961. Producers' stocks declined 26 million pounds during the year.

Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute, at Spokane, have been sent to members in the Special Circular of May 8, 1909, and for convenience a summary of the additional information is given later in this announcement. In spite of the present small number who have joined the party, final arrangements have been made to complete the itinerary given in the circular. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the special courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. . For those who cannot take the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving the Yellowstone Park. In order to make the necessary arrangements, however, the names of members and guests contemplating this partial trip should be sent at once to Mr. Theodore Dwight, .39 West 39th St., New York, N. Y. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago September 16. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals (luring the entire trip, except while taking the tour through the Yellowstone Park. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. EVEN the weather man joined in a friendly conspiracy to make the fall meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division at Rolla, Mo., Oct. 23-25. the splendid surges that it was. Following weeks of rain, the foliage of the Ozarks was still green, merely enlivened here and there by splashes of autumn coloring. In contrast to the tranquil beauty of the School of Mines campus under smiling Indian summer skies, the pace of the meeting was lively. Registration was larger than at any previous meeting and included an unusual number of prominent names and delegates from all over the country. From 125 to 150 were present throughout the three technical sessions, at the Thursday evening smoker, and also at the banquet on Friday; when students trooped in to the technical sessions the audience was augmented occasionally to over 200.

This paper compares the ash slagging potential of Illinois No. 6 Seam coal: as raw coal; as commercially cleaned coal processed in a baum-jig plant; and as coal cleaned to a reduced ash specification at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility. The comparison is based on: ? ASTM ash fusibility data ? A slagging index ? Gravity fractionation analyses of critical mineral matter compounds ? Comparative pilot combustion tests. The first three grounds of comparison are laboratory data; and the final comparison involves burning approximately 15 tons of each coal at CONOCO's 1.5 MBtu/hr (440 KW) test combustor. The evidence of these .four comparisons indicates that lowering the ash specification of coal before combustion can significantly improve the ash slagging characteristics of Illinois 90. 6 Seam coal.

At a Fertilizer plant located in the southern part of India, 74 numbers of pump foundations have shown non-uniform settlements causing the tilting of pump foundations under self-weight primarily due to the presence of varying thickness of the heterogeneous subsoil beneath the pump foundations and soil erosion because of water seepage through deeper excavations in the close vicinity. Various corrective measures have been explored and taking due cognizance of the prevailing subsoil conditions, site constraints, and constructability aspects, micropiling has been adopted. This paper presents the site problem and details of remedial measures adopted for rehabilitation of the distressed pump foundations. The main objective of this paper is to provide guidelines for designer during design and detail engineering stage to avoid similar nature of problems and also to provide a solution concept to tackle similar nature of problem(s) if encountered at site.

The abrasiveness of a mineral or rock is an extremely important topic in the mining industry and is generally measured by the Bond abrasion index (AI). However, to determine such an index by the Bond test requires 1,600 g of sample with particle sizes ranging from ½” to ¾”, which are not available in certain situations, such as ore prospecting, drilling, and geometallurgical studies. In order to investigate the abrasiveness of smaller-sized sample materials, a modified LCPC test was developed, which allows testing fine materials (i.e., 1.0 mm or smaller) to predict wear in ore processing circuits and anticipate possible failures resulting from changes in abrasive characteristics of the ore being processed. The results for 16 different materials indicated a good correlation with the AI and the modified LCPC, resulting in a reliable alternative for the AI. A consolidação dos pós obedeceu à seguinte sequência: mistura dos pós segundo proporções específicas, compactação uniaxial, extrusão a quente e tratamento térmico. O material produzido foi estudado microestruturalmente mediante microscopia ótica e caracterizado quanto à dureza.

The inorganic nanotube halloysite (HNT) is a promising type of natural occurring filler for polymers. Its characteristics, such as high aspect ratio (10–50), small size, and high strength (elasticmodulus—140GPa) suggest that HNT shave a potential use in high-performance polymer nanocomposites. Compared to other nanoclays and nanosilica the relatively low content of hydroxyl groups on their surfaces makes HNTs relatively hydrophobic, although, sometimes, this is not sufficient for guaranty a good interfacial adhesion in composite systems. Further hydrophobic treatment is required to improve HNTs compatibility with polymer matrixes, maximizing interfacial interactions. In the present study, different percentages of EPB (2,2-(1,2-ethene diyldi-4,1-phenylene) bisbenzoxazole) was used to perform anon-covalent functionalization of halloysite, based on electron transfer interactions. The functionalization is characterized by specific surface area (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and water/toluene extraction experiment.
