Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

THE institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it," All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we should review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. THE important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent- magnet properties. In recent years great, advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,l an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron- nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be .rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat- treatment, and at this time the ductility A of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the magnetic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X l06. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold- worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy II. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or II is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. In 1936, during a study of other age- hardening magnetic systems, it occurred to the author that some of the iron-cobalt-vanadium alloys might be suitable for permanent magnets. The proportions of iron, cobalt, and vanadium were varied and a range of alloys of particular interest was found, as shown by the indicated area in Fig. I. The limits of this range of com- position are 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt, and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. The compositions indicated by points outside this area were also tested. "INTRODUCTION With the advent of war in 1941, military operations in Alaska were enlarged on such a scale that the demand for coal in the Territory more than doubled. Coal was needed urgently for heating forts and other military establishments, for use on large construction projects, and for handling the greatly increased volume of traffic on the Alaska Railroad. -The additional tonnage required, estimated at perhaps 250,000 tons per year, probably could have been supplied by the United States, but shipping space between Pacific Coast ports and Alaska was already overburdened with military supplies and construction materials. Moreover, although of only secondary importance in wartime, the cost of coal shipped into the Territory is reported to have been as high as $40 per ton. The alternative to importing coal was, of course, to increase the Production of the Alaska mines.Production of coal in Alaska reached, 350,000 tons in 1944, or more than double the prewar' output. The responsibility for increasing coal production was assumed largely by the Army, A Coal Commission attached to the Alaska Department arranged financial assistance for some mining operations, aided the operators in producing equipment for mechanization, and provided most of the labor necessary to operate the mines. The Bureau of Mines contributed to the program in several ways. First, exploration by the Bureau in the Moose Creek district revealed a substantial tonnage of coal of better grade than any currently mined in the Territory, 4/ and drilling in the Broad Pass district, where a mine to supply coal for the army had been started, revealed that the reserves were far less than had been supposed; this operation was abandoned. Second, coal-preparation practices were studied, and recommendations for improvements made, at two of the operating mines at which the quality of the coal makes preparation a factor of vital importance. Some of the information obtained in these studies forms the basis for the present report."

This symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. The Nature of Geological Inquiry "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals—that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, gla- ciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves—that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them —indeed, their very existence—are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound kntowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties call be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. The primary object of the drive is to provide sites for gaining information regarding the behaviour of the ore-bodies well beyond the limits of the present exposures.Due to thermal conditions, the major portion of the work was done on a six-hour shift basis, in contrast to the normal one of seven hours, with a five-day week.

IT is customary to regard the stress-strain relation as consisting of two parts, the elastic region and the plastic region. The essential attribute of the plastic region is the presence of a permanent set, which remains upon removal of all stresses. The essential attribute of the elastic region is the absence of such a permanent set. Absence of a permanent set does not imply a linear relation between stress and strain, nor even a single valued relation. In fact, in no real metal is stress a single valued function of strain in the elastic region. The property of a solid in virtue of which stress and strain are not uniquely related in the elastic range will be called "anelasticity." The purpose of the present article is to review and correlate the past work upon the anelasticity of metals. The following paper by W. A. West124 describes investigations upon anelastic properties of iron. Many manifestations of anelasticity have been observed, the first as early as 1835 by Weber.1,2 In his experiments Weber subjected a specimen to a constant load (or deformation) for a given time, and then suddenly removed the load. He observed that most of the deformation suddenly disappeared, but that there remained a residual deformation, which disappeared only gradually with time, as is illustrated in Fig. I. The occurrence of a residual deformation which only gradually disappeared, Weber called the elastic after-effect (Elastische Nackwirkung). An extensive review of the early work upon elastic after-effects has been given by Auerbach.3 Another manifestation of anelasticity is the dependence of the elastic constants-e.g., Young's modulus upon the method of measurement. Thus, if dynamic methods are used, the measured value will depend upon the frequency of oscillation. Still another manifestation is dissipation of energy attending vibration, called damping or internal friction. One objective of metallurgical science is the understanding of the plastic and fracture properties of metals in terms of their microstructure. Through such an understanding will come the ability to design microstructure to give the desired mechanical properties. A study of an elasticity will furnish an invaluable aid in the attainment of this objective. Such studies, when properly guided, yield information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the individual components of the microstructure. In order, however, that this type of information may be obtained, it is necessary that the experimental studies of anelasticity be interpreted by the appropriate mathematical analysis. This article, therefore, starts with the mathematical formulation of anelasticity.

Palladium has been used for jewelry for many years, particularly in conjunction with gold. This use increased in amount during the war, as palladium and gold were only moderately used for war purposes while demands for platinum and some of the other members of the platinum group were so great that their use in jewelry was prohibited. Palladium hardened with a small percentage of ruthenium has the necessary technical properties and appearance for good jewelry, and it is sufficiently rare to be desirable for luxury items—at least I00 times as rare as gold. Although both visual and spectro-photometric examination demonstrated that the color of Palladium was almost the same as that of platinum, a few jewelers found the surface of palladium, even after some polishing, rather dark in areas that had been repeatedly heated during the soldering necessary to assemble certain types of handmade ornaments. This phenomenon is not to be confused with the thin, bluish oxide film that can be produced by heating in air over the range 400' to 800°C., as that film is easily reduced by dipping in warm 5 per cent formic acid or in warm methanol. It was suspected that the difficulty arose from heating in atmospheres that were alternately oxidizing and reducing, as Wise and Vines1 had found that this opened the grain boundaries of palladium and palladium-silver alloys in the same manner as in pure silver, as reported by Martin and Parker.2 This damage is caused by the reaction between oxygen in solid solution in the metal, acquired when heated under oxidizing conditions, and hydrogen diffusing in from subsequent heating under reducing conditions; the steam cannot diffuse out and therefore builds up sufficient pressure to disrupt the metal near the surface. Copper and various other metals can be damaged similarly, but platinum is nearly immune; therefore the problem was new to the platinum jeweler. Sulphur in the fuel gas also can cause trouble but did not appear to be dominant in the present instance. Metallographic examination of both pure palladium and ruthenium-palladium showed that the usual torch using oxygen and city gas as normally operated did in fact cause the surface and subsurface damage that had been observed, and also disclosed that a reducing flame caused more damage than an oxidizing flame and was very damaging even in the absence of any intentional swing in atmosphere from oxidizing to reducing (Fig. 7); besides the surface damage, there was serious loss of ductility. A full explanation of the mechanism of attack is not evident at the moment, but may be allied to the attack that occurs on heating catalytically active metals in nonequilibrium atmospheres.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of research on the beneficiation of the Big Seam iron ores of Birmingham, Ala., an urgent need was felt for quick iron assays of grab samples for mill control. Since the gangue minerals in these ores - quartz, limestone, and clay - all have about the same specific gravity, the use of a specific-gravity method was anticipated as a means of measuring the iron content. The idea of estimating the composition of a mineral mixture by measuring its specific gravity is by no means new. However, the usual method of carry in out this idea proved unreliable when applied to the Big Seam ores. The usual rapid method of determining specific gravity consists of measuring the volume of a known weight of sample that has been dried at high temperature. The inadequacy of this method led to the development of the rapid, modified, specific-gravity determination described in this paper.This work- was an incidental development resulting from research on beneficiation of iron ores by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and ore producing companies of the Birmingham district."

Few people realize the tremendously important part that Saline and Pulaski Counties in central Arkansas have played in the winning of the war The present favorable war situation might have been very different if we had not had the bauxite produced during the past two years from these two small areas, a total Of about 15 square miles. As a general statement, it can be said that the Arkansas bauxite deposits are, individually, relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, therefore, compared with coal or iron-ore or open-pit copper deposits, relatively ill adapted to a rapid and drastic expansion in output. A few years ago it would have seemed an impossibility for these two counties to produce over six million long dry tons of bauxite in one year. However, with the cooperation of the operators, that is what happened in 1943, when the state of Arkansas achieved the seemingly impossible with a production of 6,020,684 1 long tons (dried equivalent) of bauxite ore during the calendar year, compared with an average annual production of 323,7252 tons in the period 1931 to 1941. It became apparent early in the year '94' that the united States soon might be drawn into the war, and, therefore, that an immediate study of the domestic metal situation was necessary. Aluminum is by far the most important metal used in the manufacture of aircraft and many other implements of war and it was evident that there would have to be a tremendous increase in the domestic production of bauxite, which is practically the only present source of this metal. AS more than 95 per cent of the known bauxite reserves of the United states was in Arkansas, careful preliminary studies were made in that state by representatives of the united States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological survey and the War Production Board in the summer of 1941 Reserves in other states also were studied. The result of these studies was a recommendation by the War Production Board that mining in the bauxite.producing areas of Arkansas be geared for maximum production, in order to supply sufficient ore for this country's war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the war needs of Canada as well. The annual goal of eight million long tons (dry weight) set for Arkansas by the war Production Board was exceeded in 1943, when in August the output reached a rate equivalent to more than 8,300,000 long tons, dry basis. Because of the comparatively small tonnage of bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. Drilling began in May 1942 but owing to delay in delivery of drills, and trucks upon which the drills were mounted the program did not get into peak operation until early in 1943. By the end of July 1944, the Bureau of Mines records indicated an addition to the Arkansas reserves of 10,000,000 long tons (wet basis) in place,

Introduction It is common experience that on re-heating a fully martensitic steel below the Ac, point, a softer and tougher structure is formed as the tempering temperature is raised. The mechanism of tempering of plain carbon and low-alloy steels has been the subject of many investigations. In a very comprehensive study, Cohen and associates have recently established three different tempering stages, the last of which reaches completion at about 700°F., with heating rates of 5°F. per minute. This latter stage has been established ta be the carbide-forming stage, so that the steel consists of a mixture of ferrite and carbide, which are the metastable equilibrium phases. Any subsequent changes which take place at higher temperatures below the Ac, point in the absence of graphitization or carbide lattice conversion normally consist of agglomeration of the carbide particles. This naturally results in the softening of the steel. However, in many cases the Ac, point, as determined by dilatometry, thermal analysis, etc., only gives a rough estimate of the temperature where the reaction, ferrite plus carbides to austenite, is initiated. This appears to be especially true in the case of alloy steels in which three phases can co-exist in certain temperature ranges. Bain has given data on the three-phase equilibrium in both manganese and nickel steels. In these steels, the formation of austenite at temperatures just above the AeIL apparently involves the diffusion of the alloying elements to the first pools of austenite, thereby making the process very sluggish. As a consequence, the critical Ac points determined by ordinary methods at normal rates of heating can be quite distant from the true equilibrium Ae temperatures.

"INTRODUCTION Cobalt is an essential metal in the normal industrial ac¬tivity of the United States. Being an important constituent of high-speed steels and other cutting-tool materials, it becomes of critically essential importance during periods of national emergency. 3/ The Presidential order of December 20, 1940, included cobalt among other essential commodities that could be exported only under license. The Executive order 4/ listed cobalt metal, cobalt oxide, and alloys containing more than 5 per¬cent cobalt as being within the licensing requirements.There was no domestic marketed production of, cobalt products from 1931 until 1940 when the Pyrites Co. 5/ produced some cobalt oxide. The major portion of the domestic cobalt requirements has been obtained from Northern Rhodesia, the Belgian Congo, and French Morocco. 6/ The uncertainty of sea transportation from those sources of supply demanded that steps be taken to obtain from domestic raw materials an adequate supply of cobalt for use in the materials required for production of indispensable machined war metal products. In connection with the national policy for attaining self-sufficiency of strategic and critical materials, the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station initiated studies to recover cobalt from the low-grade oxidized cobalt deposits in the Goodsprings district, Nevada. Hewett 7/ reported occurrence of cobalt specifically in the Blue Jay, Columbia, Copper Chief, and Highline mines and generally over a widespread area in the district."

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "'tiff;' meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond county, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest open-pit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1914, the derrick spans, 2,000 feet or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labour as much as possible, steam shovels and railway haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type.

ONE of the important factors that determine the resistance of a metal or alloy to further chemical reaction is the structure of the superficial oxide film A thorough understanding of the physical and chemical structure as well as the stability of the oxide film formed on the surface as a function of time and temperature of the chemical reaction might furnish clues as to the nature of the reaction process and the protective nature of the film A comprehensive program has been undertaken to study these phenomena This paper summarizes the structure of the oxide films formed on the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and copper at temperatures up to 700°C Before the introduction of the electron diffraction technique, it «as necessary to use either direct chemical analyses or X-ray diffraction analyses to determine the nature of the oxide film formed on the metal or alloy Chemical analyses yields information on the percentages of the several atomic species present in the film while X-ray diffraction analyses yield information on the atomic geometry In special cases the information obtained may be identical, but in general both view-points are necessary Much of, the early work was carried out on the oxidation of bulk samples where thick films were obtained The products were identified after cooling to room temperature by X-ray diffraction and chemical analyses Although much useful information has been obtained in this manner, little could be learned about the character of the protective oxides during the period when the films were actually protective Evidence concerning the chemical structure of thin oxide films has been made possible by the development of the electron diffraction reflection technique In this method the most fruitful investigations have been made by carrying out the reaction in situ at the temperature at which the film is actually protective LITERATURE The oxidation of iron has been extensively investigated by X-ray and electron diffraction Jackson and Quarrell1 found that oxide films formed and examined at the same temperature differed considerably from those allowed to cool to room temperature The results showed that below 400°C the oxide that was stable in intimate contact with iron was Fe304, between 515° and 900°C the stable film was FeO Above the upper change point of iron the oxide was found to be Fe304 prom 400° to 515°C , FeO, Fe304 or a mixture of the two oxides was found Recrystallization of the air-formed film below 400° and above 900°C led to the formation of Fe304 In the range where thicker films consisted of FeO, the air-formed film was converted to a new hexagonal oxide not previously described

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.
