Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer?Part II (BWOAS) consists of 13,200 feet of tunnel of 12-foot tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. A Lovat RME167SE was used to drive this tunnel with steel fiber reinforced precast segmental liner used for support. This paper will discuss the concepts for tunnel sup-port and TBM selection, the problems encountered with the TBM sealing systems and the solutions used to repair the machine.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow in by the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

Despite more than half a century of experience with roof bolting, no design method has received wide acceptance. To begin to improve this situation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a statistical study of roof bolt performance at a number of mines throughout the U.S. Case histories were collected from 37 mines with a variety of roof bolt types and patterns in a wide range of geologic environments. Performance was measured in terms of the number of roof falls that occurred per10,000 ft of drivage. The study found that roof falls are rare when the roof is strong and the stress is low, even with light roof bolting patterns. The focus of this paper is on the more difficult conditions, where the roof is weaker and/or the stress is higher. Analysis of the results led to guidelines that can be used to make preliminary estimates of the required bolt length, capacity, and pattern. The guidelines are based on the depth of cover (which correlates with stress) and the roof quality (measured by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and the intersection span. Another contribution is a formula for estimating the horizontal stress level in the eastern U.S. coalfields as a function of the depth of cover. The design guidelines are currently being implemented into a computer program called Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS).

As in many other industries, such as construction and agriculture, overhead electric power lines are a serious hazard at mining and mining-related operations. Even when excluding injuries that occur during electrical maintenance work, over one fourth of electrical fatalities in the mining industry are due to accidental overhead line contacts, and for each fatality nearly two serious non-fatal injuries occur due to such contacts. In incidents involving high-reaching mobile equipment, many of the victims touched the equipment after the fact, unaware that the machine frame had become energized by the line contact. MSHA data for accidents involving overhead power line contacts in the mining industry between 1980 and 1997 reveal that in 57% of the cases personnel were unaware of the accidental line contact until after one or more workers touched the equipment or a hoisted load and were injured. The situation is similar in the construction industry, where according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) data at least 20% of such victims are unaware of the line contact. This suggests that a device that alerts workers when a power line has been contacted could help prevent many of these injuries. Such a device would not prevent power line contacts, yet if widely employed could yield a significant reduction in the number of resulting injuries. Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are attempting to develop such a device. The approach being investigated is based on measuring electric current flow to ground through a machine during a line contact. The specific technique being tested involves the diversion of some part of this current through a shunt cable mounted on board the machine, to provide a point at which to install a current sensor. Experiments thus far indicate that this approach is feasible. Ongoing research is better defining electric current flow through mobile equipment, refining techniques for measuring this current, and identifying factors that could limit the effectiveness of the proposed alarm.

On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.

Fresh water or brine drilling fluids may be kept free of suspended drilled solids by the addition of a water soluble acrylamide-carboxylic acid copolymer at the flowline. Addition of from .01 to 0.2 lblbbl of the polymer solution to drilling fluids containing less than 5 per cent clay solids by weight causes the solids to flocculate and settle rapidly to the bottom of the pits. Solutions of the polymer injected at the pump suction reduce the loss of water to permeable formations without impairing the permeability to oil. The use of drill-itlg fluids clarified with the polymer has resulted in increased drilling rates, extended bit life, and lower drilling fluid costs. INTRODUCTION Field experience and the results of a number of investigations have established that the accumulation of solids in drilling fluid reduces drilling rate.'-' Drilling with water makes possible higher drilling rates than can be achieved with mud but in many areas drilling with water may not be feasible because of the possibility of encountering high formation pressures or by-dratable formations. To combat these conditions, the drilling fluid must possess certain physical properties such as viscosity, density, fluid loss, etc., which require the presence of solids. The current trend in drilling fluid treatment is to maintain as low a percentage of solids as is possible without harmfully affecting the mud properties needed for drilling. Mechanical separating devices such as wet cyclones and decanting-type centrifuges are proving to be an economical means of controlling the percentage of solids and thereby maintaining low solids muds. Also: special muds have been developed for the purpose of retarding the hydration of drilled solids so that they may be more easily removed by shale shakers or settling pits. In some areas, such as West Texas, the characteristics of some formations will permit drilling with water. However, because of the dispersion of drilled solids, it is usually not possible to maintain clear water even with the aid of mechanical separators, or by utilizing large settling pits. For this reason the commonly used term "water drilling" is a misnomer since the water usually contains some solids. Because of the improved drilling rates and other benefits which might be effected, a laboratory and field study was made of the use of flocculating agents for maintaining clear water for drilling. PROCEDURE Laboratory—Solids Settling Two techniques were employed to determine the effectiveness of flocculating agents in settling solids from drilling mud. First, the rate of fall of solids was measured in graduated beakers containing mud treated with various flocculating agents. Natural gum, oil-in-water emulsions prepared with ethoxylated nonyl phenols and diesel oil. and a powdered synthetic acrylamide-carboxylic acid copolymer* (hereinafter referred to as "polymer") were tested as flocculating agents in both fresh water and salt saturated muds containing 4 per cent solids. The polymer was not added in the powder form directly to the muds but was first dissolved in water in a concentration of 3.5 lb/bbl. The polymer solution was then added directly to the mud. The concentration of the flocculating agents, including the polymer, was varied. High rates of fall of the solids indicated high flocculating efficiency. A second technique consisted of measuring the time in minutes required to obtain clear water at the pump suction after addition of the various flocculating agents at the flowline. These tests were made using a model mud circulating system having a total volume of approximately 10 gal. The natural fresh water and brine muds used contained 4 per cent solids. The sphere of operations of dry crushing has been so much enlarged of late years that the following notes with reference to its advantages and limitations, and also some practical results in connection with the crushing of gold ores will probably be of service to the members of the Institute. Until recently, with one notable exception that of the Mt. Morgan Gold Mine, dry crushing has only been practiced to a very limited extent in Australasia, and elsewhere it might be said to belong to industries other than mining Its sphere of usefulness depends on the fact that the' product is delivered in a dry state without the separation of the finer particles from the coarser to any appreciable extent, thus enabling the following advantages to be achieved with different ores.

Of the 28 accident/injury classifications listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, handling materials is second only to roof falls in terms of generating the highest number of reportable accidents in active underground coal mines. Two materials-handling activities that cause numerous injuries each year are the categories of “handling supplies or material, load and unload” and “moving power cables.” Mechanization and mine worker activity training are two methods that can aid in preventing these injuries. This paper describes three mechanical methods—the mobile manipulator, the in-mine hoist, and a cable-handling system—being developed and tested at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Two of the devices are specifically designed for loading, unloading, and moving supplies and materials, and the third device is for handling trailing cables in the confined spaces of coal mines. Also described are safety solutions developed for underground coal mines geared to showing miners safe and unsafe ways of performing various materials-handling tasks.

A method is presented for calculating individual gas and oil or water and oil relative permeabilities from data obtained during a gas drive or a waterflood experiment performed on a linear porous body. The method has been tested and found both rapid and reliable for normal-sized core samples. INTRODUCTION Individual oil and gas or oil and water relative permeabilities are required for a number of reservoir engineering applications. Chief among these is the evaluation of oil displacement under conditions where gravitational effects are significant, such as a water drive or crestal gas injection in a steeply dipping oil reservoir. Numerous proposed methods of obtaining relative permeability data on reservoir core samples have been too tedious and time consuming for practical use, or have yielded questionable and sometimes inconsistent results. A method has been developed by which the individual relative permeability curves can be calculated from data collected during a displacement test. The method is based on sound theoretical considerations. Using this method, with a properly designed experimental procedure, relative permeability curves can be obtained using core samples of normal size (i.e., 2 to 3 in. in length and 1 to 2 in. in diameter) within a few days after receipt of the core. In a recent publication D. A. Efros1 describes an approach to the calculation of individual relative permeabilities that is based on the same theoretical considerations. We believe the approach described in the present paper is more adaptable to practical application than the method implied by Efros. In addition, comparisons with independently determined relative permeabilities are furnished to substantiate the reliability of the new method. DERIVATION Previously the theory of Buckley and Leverett as extended by Welge2 as been used to calculate the ratio of relative permeabilities. In the derivation which follows, this theory is further extended to permit calculation of the individual relative permeabilities. The theory assumes two conditions which must be achieved before the method is applicable. They are that the flow velocity be high enough to achieve what has been termed stabilized displacement,3 and that the flow velocity is constant at all cross sections of the linear porous body. In stabilized displacement the flowing pressure gradient is high compared with the capillary pressure difference between the flowing phases. The high pressure drop insures that the portion of the core in which capillary effects predominate will be compressed to a negligibly small fraction of the total pore space. Multiple seam mining interactions caused by full extraction mining, whether due to undermining or overmining, frequently involve tensile failure of the affected mine roof. The adverse ground control conditions may prevent mining for both safety and economic reasons. Prior researchers have identified the geometric, geologic and mining factors controlling multiple seam mining interactions. This numerical study examines the mechanics of these interactions using a modeling procedure that 1) incorporates the essential constitutive behavior of the rock such as strain-softening of the intact rock and shear and tensile failure along bedding planes and 2) captures the geologic variability of the rock especially the layering of weak and strong rocks and weak bedding planes. Specifically, the numerical study considered the effect of vertical stress, interburden thickness, and the immediate roof quality of the affected seam in both undermining and overmining situations. The models show that for overburden-to-interburden thickness (OB/IB) ratios of less than 5, interactions do not occur, and that for OB/IB more than 50, extreme interaction is a certainty. In between, the possibility of an interaction was found to depend on gob width-to-interburden thickness ratio, site specific geology and horizontal stress to rock strength ratio in addition to the OB/IB ratio. The models also showed that horizontal stress was profoundly altered well above or below a full extraction area and that these changes are likely to influence the success or failure of multiple seam mining. The role of horizontal stress in multiple seam mining interactions has received little attention in prior investigations. Four factors control the mechanics of multiple seam mining interactions: 1. vertical stress concentration 2. horizontal stress concentration 3. stress re-direction 4. bedding plane slip bands A combination of vertical and horizontal stress increase and high stress gradients in the vicinity of full extraction areas re-orients principal stresses into a very unfavorable direction. This seemingly small stress re-orientation has a profound adverse effect on bedded rock.

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not always been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. law requires that miners have a minimum of 8 hours of safety training annually, plus 40 hours for underground miners and 24 hours for surface miners when they enter the industry. However, miners rarely view this training time positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep While mining has become far safer in the past 100 years, it is still a dangerous occupation. The Office for Mine Safety and Health Research, a part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), has funded a project for the past 4 years to address this challenge. The purpose of the research was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values that it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages across to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how a series of training videos was developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

The objective of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at Inco's Stobie mine was to conduct a long term field evaluation of diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems available to the underground mining industry. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of DPF regeneration, efficiency of DPF systems and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions, and reliability and durability of DPF systems. Nine state-of-the-art diesel particulate matter (DPM) filtration systems have been retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and have been subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durability of the tested DPF systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of particulate matter, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate their advantages and disadvantages. This paper also offers a review of selected experiences with the installation and operation of the DPF systems on underground mining vehicles at the Inco Stobie Mine.

This paper presents equilibrium ratios measured on oil and gas samples taken from the Kelly-Snyder field at the reservoir temperature of 128°F. From these data smoothed curves were constructed for the reservoir fluid up to the bubble-point, 1,874 psia. A material balance calculation, based on the use of equilibrium ratios instead of the usual solubility and shrinkage meayr~rements is made on the field and compared to the con\.entional method. DETERMINATION OF EQUILIBRIUM RATIOS The equilibrium ratios, or K values were obtained by recombining separator samples of oil and gas taken when the reservoir was above its bubble point, and thus represented the reservoir fluid before any change had occurred due to the evolution of gas. The well sampled had a gas-oil ratio of 617 cu ft of high pressure sepalator gas per barrel of separator oil. and a bottom-hole temperature of 128°F. Samples were brought to equilibrium by agitating for 24 hours in a thermostat, maintained at the proper temperature within 0.2ºF, mercury being added when necessary to maintain the pressure constant. Samples of oil and gas were then taken by constant pressure displacement, and analyzed by low temperature frac-tionation. Equilibrium ratios were determined at 128°F and 500, 800, 1,000 and 1,400 psig. At the latter pressure, there were indications that the gas samples were contaminated with small quantities of oil, and only data taken at the first three pressures were included in Fig. I. This figure has been extended to higher and lower pressures by the use of the Fluor charts for 3,000 psi convergence pressure, on which the experimental points fit well. MATERIAL BALANCE EQUATIONS The possible errors involved in conventional material balance equations have been analyzed by Muskat1. Where the errors occur in field measurements, or in obtaining effective averages from variables such as gas-oil ratio and pressure, they will evidently be involved in any attempt to estimate the content of the reservoir. On the other hand, substantial errors may be introduced in conventional material balance calculations by: (1) the neglect of the amount of oil dissolved in gas at high pressures and temperatures in the reservoir, but which condenses under separator conditions; (2) the assumption that the separation of oil and gas in the reservoir may be duplicated by a differential liberation in the

ADECO, which stands for ?Analysis of Controlled Deformations in tunnels,? now allows us to fulfll Rabcewicz?s dream in any stress-strain condition. In order to achieve that dream and its consequent control over cost and schedule, however, NATM must be abandoned for the ADECO. The paper presents the basic concepts in the ADECO approach to design, construction and monitoring of tunnels together with some case histories, including: full face excavation for Cassia tunnel (width of 22 m, height of 14 m) in sands and silts under 5 m cover below an archeological area in Rome, Italy; Tartaguille tunnel (face area > 100 m2) advanced full face in highly swelling and squeezing ground under 100 m cover where NATM led to catastrophic failure, France; and 80 km of tunnels (face area > 100 m2) advanced full face in highly squeezing/swelling ground under 500 m cover for the high-speed railway line between Bologne and Florence, Italy (turnkey contract).

THE origin of spontaneous combustion in collieries is, of course, chiefly due to bad system in laying out the pits, unclean workings, insufficient ventilation, and neglect in damming off works after they are exhausted of the main coal. This is particularly indispensable in the Richmond field, because it is difficult and dangerous here, on account of the inferior roof, to remove the last vestiges of coal ; and we are compelled also to retain all the slates and bands, as far as possible, in the pit, to help fill up, although such material is liable to fire. This, however, can be prevented to a great extent, as mentioned below. I am satisfied that the only system of working this thick coal is by cross-cutting (Querbau, ouvrage & travers) or working in benches, as practiced in France (Creusot, Rive de Gier, St. Etienne), in Silesia (Kiinigsgrube), which I have used as far as it is practicable in an old pit, almost torn to pieces by former workings. Modifications may, of course, be needed, even in the same pit, on account of irregularities in the seam. I am also satisfied for economical reasons (on account of the heavy cost for timbering) that pits here ought to be worked upwards, even if it requires a longer period of time to win the coal, and a greater outlay of capital to commence with. The various saddle-shaped " troubles " making natural minor basins in the main basin aid in the execution of this plan. A pit worked once ought to be worked out clean, given up, and dammed off forever. If sections of proper height are assumed, according to the required amount of production for a certain period of time, they ought to be worked out and filled in as much as possible, dammed off, and ultimately allowed to fill up with water, in order to protect the upper works in future from fire in the gob below. This I consider indispensable, because we may not be able profitably to fill in all the ground. To do so we have to use the waste of the mine, although it is liable to fire in time. In using this stuff, it ought to be surrounded by walls of rock not liable to take fire, laid firmly in clay, the gob being in the middle, and firmly covered and packed with clay on top. In

A monitoring method for diesel particulate matter was published as Method 5040 by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Organic and elemental carbon are determined by the method, but elemental carbon (EC) is a better exposure measure. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed use of NIOSH 5040 for compliance determinations in metal and nonmetal mines. MSHA also published a rule making for coalmines, but no exposure standard was provided. A standard based on particulate carbon is not considered practical because of coal dust interference. Interference may not be a problem if an appropriate size-selective sampler and EC exposure standard are employed. Sub micrometer dust concentrations found in previous surveys of nondieselized, underground coal mines were relatively low. If a large fraction of the sub micrometer dust is organic and mineral matter, sub micrometer EC concentrations would be much lower than sub micrometer mass concentrations. Laboratory and ?eld results reported here in indicate the amount of EC contributed by sub micrometer coal dust is minor. In a laboratory test, a sub micrometer EC concentration of 31µg m 3 was found when sampling are spirable coal dust concentration over three times the US compliance limit (2mg m3). Laboratory results are consistent with surveys of nondieselized coal mines, where EC results ranged from below the method limit of detection to 18µg m 3 when size-selective samplers were used to collect dust fraction shaving particle diameters below 1.5µm sub micrometer EC concentrations were ?7µg m3. In dieselized mines, sub micrometer EC concentrations are much higher.

In the past ten years, the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) has arguably become the key document for tunnel construction. This report not only allocates much of the risk involved with the work, it serves as the basis for bid preparation and is used extensively in resolving disputes during construction. This paper discusses some important issues related to the GBR and presents suggestions for improving these vital reports.
