The Bafq - Saghand ore belt (metallogenic zone) is the main region, where the major discovered Uranium resources are located. This belt is a unique Upper Precambrian terrane experienced Katanga ? Pan African tectono ? thermal events. The oldest sialic crust was formed during the middle Proterozoic and followed by K-granite intrusions of Lufilian Cycle (850-800 M.Y.).This event caused Tectono ? Magmatic ? Activization (T.M.A) characterized by intracontinental rifting and associated ore formations. This zone was considered as an iron ore belt in 1960s ? 1970s, and U ? Th ? REE belt in 1980s ? 1990s, but by new discovered of U ? Mo (Co, Au, As, Cu) mineralization is assigned as a U - Polymetal zone, hosting the full sequences of iron oxide (Cu, Au, U) ore forming groups. On the basis of detailed investigations this zone is characterized by the following peculiarities: This zone is the vestigial vessel of Gondwana basement, where the oldest granite and the first platform clastic cover is exposed. This zone is marginal part of Precambrian continental crust, consolidated in 1.3-1.0 B.a. The sub mature continental crust experienced Lufilian Orogenic and Katanga ? Pan African Tectono ? Thermal event by intercontinental rifting, and ore mineralizations. The ore forming stages were sequential processes, started by enriched mantle derived metallogeny, and ended by interaction of silanes/ HACONS (derived from outer core) with crust. The magnetite- apatite (REE, Ti) metallogeny developed from alkaline- ultrabasic magmatic differentiation, capable to from Au- Ni- Sulfide intrusive massifs during 850- 800 Ma. Degassing of silanes/HACONS from deeper level, not only caused mantle enrichment, and plume upwelling as a frontal load, but also played the main role to develop regional Si (-Na-K-Mg-Ca-Co3) metasomatism, and formation of U- Th- Ti- REE- (apatite, magnetite) deposits. The latest (583-510 Ma old) felsic magmatism was major IGU from U-Mo (-Co-As-Au-?Cu?) hydrothermal vein- type deposits. The albitite- type U- Ti- REE (Th) mineralization could be formed by interaction of ascending, and descending solutions along the deep- rooted structural conduits.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins

"Abstract - The Meadowbank gold deposits are hosted by a series of polydeformed and metamorphosed auriferous iron formations located in the Neoarchean Woodburn Lake group, western Churchill province, Nunavut. The supracrustal rocks in the Meadowbank area consist of a thick sequence of intermediate-composition volcanic rocks with intercalated iron formation, ultramafic volcanic rocks, and quartzite to quartz arenite. U-Pb geochronology gives an interpreted age of 2711 ± 3 Ma for the host strata at Meadowbank.The intermediate volcanic rocks are predominately volcaniclastic and have a geochemical composition that is consistent with an active continental margin setting. Iron formation deposition was coeval with the intermediate volcanism, as indicated by incorporation of volcanic detritus in the chemical precipitate. The geochemistry of the iron formation indicates that it precipitated from a fluid that at one time was at high temperature (>250°C), reducing, and likely acidic. Intercalated ultramafic rocks rarely show spinifex textures and have trace element ratios that are consistent with mantle plume-related undepleted mantle asthenosphere, likely recording episodic mantle upwelling associated with rifting in an active continental margin. The contact between the ultramafic volcanic rocks and the overlying quartz arenite is a disconformity marked by a quartz pebble conglomerate. However, similar geology on the structural hanging wall and footwall of the contact suggests that the conglomerate does not represent a significant hiatus in deposition, and is more likely a prograding terriginous siliciclastic unit.Three metamorphic events are recognized. The first, M1, is a cryptic greenschist facies event that is pre-D2. The second event, M2, is a mid-greenschist to amphibolite facies, syn-D2 event. M3 is the last event recognized, and is a post-tectonic greenschist facies event that is regional but inhomogeneous in extent, possibly reflecting thermal aureoles around post-tectonic 1.7 to 1.8 Ga Nueltin granites. The structural geology of the area is complex with four phases of deformation recognized, two of which had a significant effect on the geometry of the deposit. All of these regional events are interpreted as Paleoproterozoic in age. Relationships between deformation fabrics and mineralization, as well as the overall geometry of the mineralized envelopes, suggest that the deposit formed during syn- to late-D2. Superimposed on the mineralization are D4 structural elements that postdate gold mineralization.The main control on gold mineralization is replacement of magnetite by pyrrhotite and pyrite in high-strain corridors. The composition of amphiboles and chlorites associated with gold mineralization is remarkably consistent and shows no spatial or temporal variation, suggesting that it was buffered by the iron-rich nature of the host rocks. The bulk metasomatic effect on the intermediate volcanic rocks is characterized by the addition of K2O and the loss of CaO, Na2O, and MgO, with little variation in the total iron content. The elemental losses are likely the result of destruction of feldspars, stilpnomelane, and ferroactinolite, which are relatively common in the unmineralized rocks, and the formation of sericite, chlorite, and grunerite."

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

The development of the SECV brown coal open cut at Loy Yang will require depressurisation of aquifers both within and below the coal seam sequence in order to maintain open cut stability. Prediction of future open cut dewatering requirements at Loy Yang Open Cut and evaluation of the regional consequences of dewatering has required development of a detailed hydrogeological model of the Loy Yang area. The complex stratigraphy of the coal seam and aquifer/aquitard sequences at Loy Yang have been analysed and integrated with the hydrogeological concepts developed from regional groundwater studies to formulate a realistic hydrogeological model as a basis for finite-element flow modelling.

SOME problems concomitant with commercial exploitation of marble are presented as examples of interesting, useful and profitable fields for application of scientific knowledge. The marble industry is only one such field and is selected because its varying new aspects are familiar to the author. However, what is true for marble is equally so in principle for many industrial minerals. The problems of any stone industry are to maintain markets, create new outlets for stone already in demand, and develop varied uses for varieties that are not so popular. Here the geologist has a different role from most of his colleagues in metal mining. The producing branch may ask about the expectable variation in thickness or size of a deposit as development proceeds. The stock department may call for the available amount of a given type of stone before accepting a large order. The sales force requires data on the use for stone from certain parts of deposits in order to divert grades to the most suitable use. The service depart-ment wants defects rectified and the cause determined to avoid recurrence. The mills want data on durability and cutting quality of abrasives. The geologist occupies no special department; he is on general call, as may be illustrated by a few types of problems that may be classified as: (1) dominantly geological in character, (2) dominantly chemical in character, (3) dominantly physical in character.

Newmont mine geologists in Nevada are most proficient when applying technical expertise with multi-departmental teams in three main settings. The first is value creation through near-mine discovery, development and reserve conversion. Since 1986, geologists have created substantial net asset value in developing more than 1.35 kt (43 million oz) into quality Nevada surface and underground gold reserves. The second setting is value realization by supporting mine operations with ore control, selective mining, reconciliation investigations and strategic planning. The investment of technical research on reconciliation investigations led to new concepts and practices that highlighted opportunities for large revenue and reserve gains. In 2002, more than $65 million in projected revenue was added to the Gold Quarry south layback. Kriged mine polygon construction and controlled blast heave at the Lone Tree Mine provided millions of dollars in mining efficiencies. High-quality geologic advice in selective mining at the Twin Creeks Mine helped obtain $4.3 million revenue gains throughout 2002-2003.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. After involvement and success in iron ore and nickel, Homestake made a strategic investment in the Kalgoorlie gold operations in 1975 and now owns 50% of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, operators of Australia’s biggest gold mine. In 1998 Homestake acquired the major Australian gold producer Plutonic Resources, is now firmly established as Australia’s second largest gold producer and is actively seeking further opportunities for growth in the Austral-Asia region. A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank, U. S. Geological Survey, that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Here, an area of andesitic rocks, four square miles in extent, has been argillized, pyritized, chloritized and silicified. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies were followed by the diamond drilling of three holes totalling 6,220 feet. Further alteration ang geochemical studies were made on the cores from these holes. A brief review of the alteration and geologic mapping, colored aerial photograph interpretation, geochemical soil and rock sampling, magnetic, gravity and radio-metric surveys are presented together with some conclusions regarding this work. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. Important contributions were made to the project by personnel of the Rocky Mountain District and the Geophysics Division. Individual acknowledgements to these people are made at the end of the paper. BASIS FOR THE PROJECT The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank (1947, p. 444) that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, including the favorable Leadville limestone, are exposed three miles south of the altered area, and reason exists to believe that they might underlie it within a reasonable depth. Alteration of pre-mineral volcanic rocks has been used successfully as a guide to concealed orebodies in the Main Tintic and East Tin tic mining districts, Utah (Bill-ingsley, 1933, p. 120-122; Lovering et al, 1949; Howd, 1957, p. 124-134; Cook, 1957, p. 73) and could be a useful guide here. GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE The Northern and Southern Bonanza mining districts are northwest of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, just within the northeastern edge of the San Juan volcanic province. The districts are1ocated on the southern extension of the Sawatch uplift, a prorninent northwest-trending structural high. The Courtland-Gleeson area is in Cochise County about 15 miles east of Tombstone in southeastern Arizona. Rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre-cambrian to Quaternary. The Precambrian is repre-sented by the Pinal schist. Paleozoic rocks include the Cambrian Bolsa quartzite and Abrigo limestone, Mississippian Escabrosa limestone, and the Permo-Carboniferous Naco Group limestones. Rocks believed to be of Triassic and/or Jurassic age include the Copper Belle monzonite porphyry, Turquoise granite, and Gleeson quartz monzonite. The Cretaceous is represented by andesitic volcanics and various sedimentary rocks. Tertiary rocks include the intrusive and extrusive Sugarloaf quartz latite porphyry and numerous dikes of various rock types. Quaternary conglomerates cover the northern and eastern part of the area. The geologic structure is extremely complex. All rocks as old as early Tertiary have been involved in either tilting, normal faulting, high angle reverse faulting, imbricate thrusting or folding and overfold-ing. Major deformation was initiated during the first half of the Tertiary. Northeast-southwest compres-sional forces caused thrust plates containing lower Paleozoic rocks to override Cretaceous rocks. Subsequently, two large slide blocks of lower Paleozoic rocks, acting under the influence of gravity, moved eastward. The imbricate structure and the gravity slide blocks were then broken by late Tertiary normal faults. INTRODUCTION The Courtland-Gleeson area, or Turquoise Mining District, has long been recognized as an area of extreme structural complexity. Gilluly 2 referred to the entire district as a "gigantic thrust breccia". In 1962, Bear Creek Mining Company completed a two year program of detailed geologic mapping supported by exploration drilling. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the results of this investigation and to provide a structural interpretation based on these results. The geologic map that accompanies this report is generalized and shows only the major and significant features. The area was initially mapped on aerial photographs on a scale of 1 in. equals approximately 500 ft. These data were transferred to a planimetric base using a vertical sketch master. LOCATION The Courtland-Gleeson area is in central Cochise County, about fifteen miles east of Tombstone, and about twenty-two miles northeast of Bisbee in southeastern Arizona (Fig. 1). The area is readily accessible over graded gravel roads from both Tombstone and Elfrida. GENERAL GEOLOGY Rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre-cambrian to Quaternary. wilson3 and Gilluly2 have published very detailed descriptions of the principal rock units exposed in the area. Only a summary description is provided in Table I. A great number of previously unmapped narrow Tertiary dikes and small irregular masses of hornblende andesite porphyry, lamprophyre, and aplite intrude the Gleeson quartz monzonite in the western part of the map area. The scale of the map prohibits showing them. The aplite dikes are related to, and bear the same structural relationships as, the Sugarloaf quartz latite dikes found in this area. For that reason, and because both the hornblende andesite porphyry and the lamprophyre are post-mineral and post-thrusting, their omission from the map is not considered significant. Because so many of the contacts in the district are fault contacts, because bedding faults appear to be prevalent but are difficult to recognize and map, and because igneous intrusions are so common throughout the sedimentary section, it is virtually impossible to measure an exact total thickness of any of the sedimentary rock units. Nevertheless, neither the field mapping program nor the diamond drilling provided any basis for suspecting that the thicknesses of the sedimentary units are significantly greater or less than what might be inferred from surrounding districts.

Our colleagues cannot in the future earn reputations and medals for achievements in milling and smelting ore and for successful management of mining companies, if some one doesn't keep finding and mining the ore to mill and smelt and to provide the basis for the good management. Good ore seems sometimes to be quite helpful to good management, and good ore is not as easy to find as it used to be. And there are still more reasons, why—when this honor had been decided upon and named for Mr. Daniel C. Jackling—it should be initially conferred on Reno H. Sales. . The terms of reference of the award are that it should be conferred upon an individual working in the fields of mining, geology, geophysics, who has made an outstanding contribution to the progress of technology in one or more of those fields. And in this initial year (the earlier years are the easiest) just that was done. I think I could get away with it amongst the old-timers of my generation if I say that this time they made the award to the individual, who made the outstanding contribution. But, as Al Smith used to say, "Let's look at the record." Really, the record is mixed up a little with extra-lateral litigation—the old-time "apex cases" under Section 2322 of the Revised Statutes. Reno Sales doesn't like such litigation, but there is little question that the urgency, generated by conflicting claims of intra-limital and extra-lateral rights, and consequent necessity for committing to records and maps the complications of Butte structure, did advance—and by several years—the first continuous, accurate, systematic, and scientific portrayal of the geological and mineralogical details of what is, after all, the most important and the most complicated copper district—at least in North America. Prior to Sales' time, some of the most eminent of geologists often waived details. One geologist took the judge to the window to show him the Rarus fault going through a notch in the Continental Divide. The entertaining testimony in the Bluebird litigation was as perfect in literary style as it was innocent of the criteria by which faulting and lack of continuity of vein structure are now recognized. At any rate, this need for an accurate record of structure was in the background—to whatever extent it was, or was not, the etiological agent—for formation of the Geological Department of the Amalgamated Copper Co. in and about the year 1900. Charles W. Goodale was at that time the head of the Boston & Montana, and John D. Ryan succeeded William Scallon as the president of Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1905. Horace V. Winchell, for years a specialist in extra-lateral litigation, was perhaps the man who at that date had the vision, the persuasive weight with the management, and the willingness to defend the idea of large current expenditures (as then viewed) for a complete and sys-

In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles. as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain. GEOLOGY The rocks of Jumbo Mountain comprise a series of folded Tertiary sediments forming a belt one half to three quarters of a mile wide, trending northwest about parallel to the strike of the beds. This belt is sandwiched between two extensive in-trusives—gabbro on the northeast and quartz dio-rite on the southwest—and has been intruded by dikes of fresh and serpentinized dunite. Shear zones follow many of the dunite-sedimentary rock contacts, and in these the nickel mineralization is concentrated. A few transverse faults offset the sediments and ultrabasics. Sedimentary Rocks: Two kinds of quartzite make up the greater part of the sedimentary section. One is dark purplish gray, very fine-grained, and thin-bedded; the other is light gray to white, medium-grained, and well-bedded. Locally the light-colored quart lites contain grit and conglomerate horizons, rich in pebbles of white chert and very fine-grained quartzite. Intercalations of dark argillites near the summit of the mountain give many of the cliffs a striking banded appearance. Dark gray to black, aphanitic, thin-bedded argillites occur throughout the entire sedimentary belt. Beds vary from a few inches to a few tens of feet thick and some, near the summit, contain numerous fossile (willow?) leaves. Only the thicker beds were mapped. The sediments are quite fresh on the northeastern side of the belt and become more metamorphosed (hornfelsed) toward the southwestern side. Brown biotite is present in the metasediments in increasing amounts as the quartz diorite is approached. Near the intrusion, porphyroblasts of plagioclase, up to 1 in. across, testify to the soaking of sedimentary rocks by solutions emanating from the quartz diorite. Most of the sediments mapped lie along the southwestern limb of an anticline, the axis of which follows the crest of the mountain and plunges at a low angle to the northwest.

In the Santa Eulalia mining district, Chihuahua, Mexico, the main mineral zone occurs in a gently warped dome with simple associated structures and contains orebodies distributed through a vertical range of over 900 m. The stratigraphy of 1945 m of geologic column is described and an abrupt shrinkage is documented in the volume of limestones immediately associated with large orebodies. Termed collapse, this shrinkage occurred during the course of mineralization. Contacts of limestone with igneous sills, and 366 m of fossiliferous limestone beds, particularly the main fossil bed, have been important localizers of ore-bodies. Up-dip gravitational controls may have been important. Fractures have exerted only local controls and over short distances. Thrust zones have displaced diabase sills and in turn have been intruded by upper members of a group of rhyolite porphyry sills. Mineralizers were related to the rhyolite porphyry, and ore has been introduced to the limestone where certain sills lie between the displaced segments of diabase and have been cut by north-south fissures. Speculations are raised that fields of unreleased strain may have influenced orebody locations; the district's zoning pattern may be a reflection of the filtering effects of large volumes of limestone; and that metal-rich brines mobilized by or incorporated within the invading porphyry might be the source of the mineralizers. PRODUCTION AND LOCATION The Santa Eulalia district has a production record approaching or exceeding 35 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore from replacement bodies in limestone. In operation since the first years of the 17001s, production has been confined to two intensely mineralized areas separated by 2 km of barren limestone, the West Camp and the East Camp. Probably 50% has been mined since 1908, with over 90% from the West Camp. The West Camp, exploited through a vertical depth of 1945 m and now approaching exhaustion, is the subject of this paper. The district lies in the northern part of the Santa Eulalia Mountains in central Chihuahua in northern Mexico, 400 km south of El Paso, Texas, and 22 km southeast of Chihuahua City. Dominating the northern part of the range is the Cerro de Santa Eulalia, a broad rolling upland which contains the district's West and East Camps. The West Camp, on the west side of the range, centers around the village of Santo Domingo, which is 2 km northeast of the Real de Santa Eulalia (Fig. 1). REGIONAL GEOLOGY Thick-bedded middle Cretaceous limestones, probably Aurora, form the great bulk of the Cerro de Santa Eulalia. The Anaconda Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Anaconda Company (Canada) I,td., has investigated, optioned and partially developed a large tonnage of iron ore amenable to magnetic concentration. The reserves are located in north central Ontario and occur within a twenty-two mile belt of layered and intricately folded metamorphic rocks, close to the north contact of an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. There are two main ore deposits. Briarcliffe is a steep to vertically dipping body 100 to 500 feet wide and over a mile long. The Two Mile Lake deposit is flat dipping and confined to an open, asymmetrical syncline; it is approximately a mile wide and 250 to 4.00 feet thick. On its flat easterly plunge, it is saucer-like in shape and is amenable to open-pitting for an east-west distance of several thousand feet. Magnetometer surveys, confirmed by drilling, indicate at least a three mile eastward extension of this deposit. Location and Access: The property is located in the Kowkash Mining District of northwestern Ontario, roughly forty-four miles north of the community of Nakina on the main line of the Canadian National Railroad. (Fig. 1) Access during the exploration period was entirely by airplane from Nakina. (Fig. 2) More recently, Nakina itself was connected to the highway network in the Longlac-Geraldton area. The property is roughly 190 miles by existing and proposed railroad from the Great Lakes waterway system. The Trans-Canada pipeline moving natural gas from western to eastern Canada passes through Geraldton roughly 70 miles south of the property. Topography: The surface features in the area are typical of a sizeable portion of the Precambrian Canadian Shield area. Many lakes, low swampy areas, and glacial moraine-type features are common in this recently glaciated area. The average elevation is between 800 and 900 feet above sea level, and the relief is probably less than 100 feet with the greater portion of the area less than 50 feet. The topographic "highs" are formed either by outcrops that were resistant to glacial erosion or by moraines, eskers and drumlins which were deposited upon the recession of the glaciers. The better mineralized zones, composed chiefly of quartz and magnetite, commonly form ridges resistant to erosion and weathering. Previous Work: Because of the obvious outcrop of the magnetite-rich beds and knowledge gained from early developments within the general region, it is conceivable that the presence of the iron formations has been known for a good many years. GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south. Metallogenic Province: The most important metallic deposits of the region have the following common characteristics: 1) The orebodies occur as manto replacements of calcareous sediments. 2) The horizons that have contributed large tonnages of ore are in similar positions in the corresponding stratigraphic columns (as it will be shown later on). 3) Lead is the most important metal in the ores. Silver is commonly present in small amounts. Occurrence of zinc is dependent on the degree of oxidation of the primary sulfides. 4) A large proportion of the total production has been in the form of oxidized ores. 5) The deposits are located on anticlines. Rocks of Cretaceous age crop out over large areas of the states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila. forming part of a belt that extends to the south along the eastern Sierra Madre. The sediments are cut by a small number of intrusive stocks ranging in characteristics from rhyolite to diorite. The most prominent structural feature of the region is a series of folds trending northwest-southeast. Faulting is not conspicuous in the region, although a major fault zone is found farther East.' The physiography closely reflects structural features, with mountains formed by anticlines and valleys conforming with intermediate synclines. Narrow valleys have also been developed along the axes of many anticlines, where solution of limy sedi- ments and erosion have proceeded along axial tension fractures. Stratigraphy: Rocks of the Upper Cretaceous are exposed in only a small percentage of the total area. Generally they have been eroded away from the mountains and are covered by recent talus and alluvium in the valleys. Humphrey' has published an excellent paper describing the Cretaceous formations of the Sierra de los Muertos, a short distance west of Monterrey. A brief summary of these formations is given below to convey an overall picture of the stratigraphic sequence that prevails just south of the area under consideration. Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.
