All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Durango, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 29, 1992. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Dr. Matthew Hrebar, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A mident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Mark is active in varsity swimming, intramural sports, and Army ROTC Pathfinders and Pershing Rifles. Mark is a co-designer of the Clear Creek County, Colorado, abandoned mine hazard rescue team plan though an introductory engineering course at Mines. [ ] MONTANA WINNER MARK J. BREN Montana College of Mineral Science & Technology, Butte, MT The winner from Montana, Mark Bren, attending Montana Tech, is a mining engineering major from Butte, Montana. Mark is an excellent student and active in the student chapter of the Society of Mining Engineers. He has worked at a gold mine in Montana, in the Earthquake Studies Office at Montana Tech, and a volunteer on the Neversweat and Washoe Railroad.

Upon completion of her, schooling she hopes to pursue a career in the coal mining industry. In preparation for her goal, her work experience includes being a lab technician, a mining engineer intern, and a lab technician assistant; she also is very skilled in various computer applications. She has been a member of SME-AIME, and secretary to the U of A Student Chapter, and recipient of the SME Coal Division Scholarship and past recipient of the Navajo Tribal Scholarship. [ ] Joshua Olmsted Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado Josh is a sophomore majoring in mining engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He is an outstanding student as well as an accomplished athlete. Josh was on the Academic Honor Roll 1988-1989 and has been awarded an athletic scholarship. He plays varsity soccer and intramural basketball.

Blizzard Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado A high school graduate of Longmont, Colorado, Johnny carries a 3.968/4.000 at Mines, majoring in Mining Engineering with a minor in Metallurgy. His name has appeared on the Academic Dean's list for the past two years. He received the Robert M. & George R. Harris Scholarship during this past year. He is a student member of SME-AIMMP and an executive council member of CSM's chapter of AIME. New Mexico Michelle Lisa Begaye plans to work in a mine near her Navajo Reservation after graduation. She would like to continue teaching the young in her community as she has been doing for the past few years. As a volunteer with the Natani' Trails, she takes at-risk students on wilderness experiences such as rafting, repelling, etc. Active in school, she played the trombone, was in speech and drama, played softball, and was the first female to play football as a right and left tackle. A member of National Honor Society in High Shool, she also made the Dean's List at Navajo Community College. Michelle will pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering when she transfers to New Mexico Tech this fall. [ ] COLORADO WINNER Nicole Albert Colorado School of Mines - Golden. Colorado Nicole is pursuing a BS in Mining Engineering with a Minor in Mineral Economics - and has already proven her serious intent with her many activities related to mining. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers; Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration; and has participated in two different projects related to mining, one of which was to clean up a mine tailings site. Nicole enjoys hunting, camping, fishing, softball and horses. Growing up with her father, working at a surface coal mine, sparked her interest in this industry.

[ ] ARIZONA WINNER Brad Carroll University of Arizona - Tucson, Arizona Brad Carroll's hometown is Tucson, Arizona but his summer work is in Oriskany Falls, New York where he is a quality control technician, truck driver and equipment operator for the Eastern Rock Products. Brad served as vice president and treasurer for the SMWAIME student chapter at the University of Arizona for the past three years He was assistant and mine foreman at the San Xavier Mining Laboratory near Tucson. Upon graduation Brad plans to find a job in a southwest mine. He is a totally self supporting student. [ ] COLORADO WINNER Zane Znamenacek Colorado School of Mines - Golden, Colorado Zane Znamenacek hails from a small town in Colorado - Alamosa - where he 4 was a 4.3 GPA in high school. As a student at Colorado School of Mines, he has many hobbies to ease the tension of education. Foremost among these is skiing, mountain biking, billiards and spring rugby. He hopes to further mining technologies and contribute to the industry by working in it full time. In 1997 he will pursue whatever opportunities are available to graduating mining engineers

The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

Mine haul roads degrade rapidly due to extreme loads on sub-optimal construction materials. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are suited to quantify large-area road-network conditions, such as surface roughness, defects, and grade to optimize remediation of poor conditions and reduce overall costs. Mine haul roads present unique challenges, such as material type and edge characteristics, to automatic road detection that often fail, requiring manual road input. This research proposes a new method for analysis using the road center determined by principal curve analysis of a haul truck’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) traces; analysis grids were created from this center line. A dense point cloud from UAV photogrammetry was generated, and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on each individual grid. The root mean square error in each grid indicates the surface roughness, and the change of slope between grids indicates the road grade inconsistencies. This method was applied to 26 road sections, and the results were validated by images taken from the truck operator’s vantage point. Critical defects were identified including excessive pothole formation, corrugation, depressions retaining water, and narrowing of travel lane. The results demonstrate this is a valid method of road identification and quantification of road defects at a mine site.

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. This paper does not try to determine the maximum tonnages and haul distances which would finally make road hauling uneconomical...

Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

Increased pressure by government agencies, higher safety standards, new levels of technology and mandatory certification programs, are forcing us to expand our awareness and increase our levels of efficiency. These higher standards require increased awareness. Increased awareness requires better training programs and better supervision with emphasis on production and the employee. This means the desire to improve must be instilled from the top down. this paper will explore the current impediments to this goal and discuss the possible solutions for achieving greater safety awareness, increased production and higher levels of personal achievement. Through the use of audio/visual aids, I will attempt to show the discrepancies as well as the solutions."

Roadheaders have become widely used in underground mining and tunneling operations because they offer the flexibility to excavate soft- to medium-strength rock formations. A critical issue in successful roadheader application is the ability to develop accurate and reliable estimates of machine production capacity and the associated bit costs. Increased pressure to improve productivity and lower costs in the mining and civil construction industries has been the driving force behind the more wide- spread use of mechanical excavation systems. This has caused both industries to move away from the conventional drill and blast methods. Additional benefits of mechanical mining include improved safety, reduced ground support requirements and fewer personnel. These advantages, coupled with recent enhancements in machine performance and reliability, have resulted in mechanical miners taking a larger share of the rock excavation market. Roadheaders are the most widely used underground partial-face excavation machines for soft- to medium- strength rocks, particularly for sedimentary rocks. They are used for development and production in soft rock mining (main haulage drifts, roadways and crosscuts), particularly in coal, industrial minerals and evaporitic rocks. In civil construction, roadheaders are used to excavate railways, roadways, and sewer and diversion tunnels in soft ground conditions. They are also used to enlarge and rehabilitate underground structures. Their ability to excavate almost any profile opening also makes them attractive to those mining and civil construction projects where various opening sizes and profiles are needed. In addition to their high mobility and versatility roadheaders are generally low capital cost systems com- pared with most other mechanical excavators. Because of higher cutting-power density due to a smaller cutting drum, roadheaders can excavate rocks harder and more abrasive than continuous miners and borers.

The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

The Standley Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Colorado included the complete replacement of the outlet works. This required two 1.8m (6 ft) diameter microtunneled wet lake taps, 380m and 186m (1246 ft and 636 ft) long, a permanent valve shaft 12.2m(40 ft) wide and 32m (105 ft) deep, and a 3.5m (11.5 ft) diameter (962 foot long) outlet tunnel driven with a roadheader. The tunnels were driven in low-strength, expansive, and slickensided claystone. The paper addresses the site investigation, shaft construction, roadheader performance, shotcrete placement, tunnel convergence, long distance microtunneling, and wet lake taps.

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. Strata management is a critical and now necessary requirement in the New South Wales underground coal mining industry. As a formal and structured process, strata management allows ground support and mining methods to be tailored to the anticipated and encountered geotechnical environment in a controlled manner. In its application, strata management therefore enables operators to identify and control geotechnical hazards and the risks they pose to the mining operation, including risks to personnel safety and mine production. The paper considers recent developments in strata management in the New South Wales underground coal mining industry. Points covered include the statutory requirements stipulated in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Regulations, Geotechnical Hazard Plans, tiered support plans, the Authority to Mine concept, Trigger Action Response Plans and monitoring. Several successful and unsuccessful case studies are included which make specific reference to roadway development and longwall retreat and in doing so, the unique demands imposed by these two different aspects of the mining operation on strata management.

Discussion of the paper of Frederick Laist, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1147 to 1162. J. C. DICK, Salt Lake City, Utah :-I would like to ask Mr. Laist why a 10 per cent. salt solution was used. MR. LAIST :-The reason for using salt in the solution is to get .the sulphur. The solution of dilute sulphuric acid has no solvent action on the sulphur even after roasting, and the addition of the salt is made primarily to dissolve the sulphur chlorides. MR. DICK:-I would like to ask also if you made any experiments as to grinding fine your calcines, rather than leaving the coarse material. MR. LAIST :-We have not made any experiments along those lines except in the laboratory, but the objections which we have to grinding are that the difficulties of roasting are very much greater when roasting finely ground material than when roasting coarse material, and the difficulties of leaching are somewhat increased; the percolating system is simpler and easier to manipulate, particularly when acid solutions are used, so that we prefer from our experience not to grind. (communication to -the Secretary +) :-In order to meet the conditions involved in his ore-treatment problem, Mr. Laist has developed a very interesting and apparently successful metallurgical hybrid which he calls the oxychloridizing roast. The lower floors of the MacDougall furnaces are made to accomplish what used to be done on the " cooling floor" in the old days of salt roasting and " hypo " or brine leaching of silver ores.

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... But to fill dry a receptacle of known volume with calcines, as described by Mr. Norwood, gives the following apparentspecific gravities:
