The 26th international APCOM symposium, hosted by The Pennsylvania State University, was held Sept. 16 to 20, 1996 in University Park, PA. Conducted about every 18 months throughout the world, APCOM symposia focus on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. The APCOM International Council is the governing body of the symposia and determines the symposium’s locations and sponsorships. This group is composed of the nine permanent (voting) members. They include the University of Arizona, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Technical University of Berlin, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The three nonvoting members are Moscow Mining Institute, China Institute of Mining and Rudarski Mining Institute of Slovenia.

Este trabalho apresenta a análise, o projeto e o desenvolvimento de um manipulador robótico industrial de baixo custo para linhas de produção. O aparato proposto possui potencial para contribuir na melhoria das condições de utilização de células robóticas no cenário industrial nacional, auxiliando na superação dos desafios existentes na implantação de células robóticas por pequenas e médias empresas, nomeadamente, custos de implantação, manutenção e reprogramação/reconfiguração. O manipulador robótico industrial foi projetado considerando uma estrutura metálica leve de baixo custo, com elementos mecânicos de precisão média e não dedicados, facilmente encontrados no mercado nacional. Além disso, o manipulador robótico foi projetado para ser capaz de alcançar velocidades médias provendo tempos de ciclo de operação quase equivalentes aos apresentados por robôs polares articulados convencionais, nas mesmas aplicações. O sistema de controle foi concebido para não empregar o dispendioso sistema convencional de hardware centralizado de controle de eixos, sendo esta operação realizada por algoritmo computacional executado no mesmo PC responsável pela gestão e integração dos processos. Assim, a operação emprega dispositivos acionadores descentralizados considerando o envio dos sinais de referência diretamente aos acionadores, possibilitando a compensação das restrições dos esforços da estrutura com recursos de suavização de trajetórias. A integração com o usuário foi projetada para possuir uma interface gráfica de manipulação amigável e que permita facilmente os processos de operação, manutenção e de reconfiguração. Fornecendo ainda, recursos de supervisão, histórico de falhas e assistência remota. Por fim, um protótipo do manipulador robótico industrial proposto é apresentado demonstrando as principais características construtivas e operacionais.

This study has been carried out to use the waste sludges generated at Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (POSCO) as the raw materials of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The burnability index of the raw mixture and the hydration characteristics and compressive strength of clinker have been examined. The waste sludges were mainly composed of CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3, the main component of OPC. The Burnability index of mixture was improved, according to the replacement content of POSCO sludge increase. POSCO sludge can be used as a raw material for cement because the state of mineral development and property of clinker produced from POSCO sludge are similar to the plain. Therefore, POSCO sludges can be used as the source materials of iron and calcium oxide.

Since 1982 standard calibration materials recommended for respirable crystalline silica analysis by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) P7 Infrared Method and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Analytical Method 7500 have undergone minor changes in size distribution. However, a critical assumption has been made that the crystalline silica in ambient mine atmosphere respirable dust samples has also remained essentially unchanged in particle size distribution. The objective of this work, therefore, is to compare recent particle size distributions of underground coal mine dust and the silica component of these dusts with estimated aerodynamic particle size distributions of calibration standard materials MIN-U-SIL 5, Berkeley 5, and SRM 1878 used by two crystalline silica analysis techniques. This work provides resolution to a previously reported discrepancy involving the proper sample dilution for the particle sizing method used. Dust impactor sampling data for various locations in 13 underground coal mines were collected between 1991 and 1998 and analyzed for the respirable mass median aerodynamic diameters. The data suggest that the MSHA P7 Method will underestimate the silica content of the sample by at most 8.5 % in the median size range of 0.9–3.6 µm and that it is unlikely one would obtain any significant error in the MSHA P7 Method analysis when the method uses Berkeley 5, MIN-U-SIL 5, or SRM 1878 as a calibration standard material. The results suggest that the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 would be more appropriate for a dust sample that is representative of the total (no cyclone classifier) rather than the respirable airborne dust, particularly since the mass fraction in the size range below 4 µm is usually a small percentage of the total airborne dust mass. However, the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 is likely to underestimate the silica content of an airborne respirable dust sample by only 5–10 %. The results of this study also suggest that any changes that may have occurred in the median respirable size of airborne coal mine dust are not significant enough to cause any appreciable error in the current methods used for respirable crystalline silica analysis.

Coals may be divided into six classes-anthracite, semi anthracite, semibituminous, bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. The first three cla~ can be distinguished by dHferences of composition, particularly the proportions of fixed carbon and the ratios of the fixed carbon to the volatile matter in the cools. The last three classes can be distinguished by di:fferences in physical character, chiefly in color and in manner of weathering. Lignite is brown, not black, and has generally a woody look, but it weathers in much the same way as subbituminous coals. On exposure to the air lignite slacks or crumbles. The lumps check and fall into small irregular pieces that exhibit a decided tendency to separate into extremely thin plates. Hence lignite deteriorates greatly during storage or long transportation. The most characteristic feature of the composition of lignite is a large percentage of moisture. '!his high moisture content reduces the fuel value of freshly mined lignite, and the partial evaporation of moisture, on expooure, causes th6 fuel to check and fall to pieces. Consequently, attempts to increase the efficiency of lignite as a fuel involve reducing its percentage of moisture and increasing its ability to endure storage and transportation. Both these results are accomplished by briquetting.

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. Downstream processing of these mineral fuels to petrochemicals and fertilizers is a major investment opportunity. In 1991, the 15 countries that constituted the region accounted for 26 % of world crude petroleum output, 15.3 % of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 4.5 % of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. Production of these mineral fuels all declined from that of 1990 owing to the Persian Gulf War, during which output from Kuwait and Iraq either ceased owing to war damage, or was embargoed. Prior to the war, Iraq and Kuwait were the fourth and fifth largest world producers of crude petroleum, respectively. In the war, virtually all of Kuwait's production and transport facilities were destroyed or damaged. Iraq's output was embargoed from export, with only domestic sales taking place. The embargo also affected Jordan, both in terms of transshipment of materials through it to Iraq and in exports of phosphate and potash. Shipments of crude petroleum by pipeline from Iraq through Saudi Arabia and Turkey and by vessel through the Persian Gulf were terminated. However, the loss in production from Iraq and Kuwait was made up by accelerated output from other Middle East and world producers. Saudi Arabia, in particular, with its excess production capacity, accounted for the largest portion, increasing crude petroleum output by 27 % to almost 3 billion barrels.

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsater-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

This paper describes full-scale tests on ten large bored piles with grouted end conducted for three projects in the urban area of Fuzhou city. Test program included site investigation, pile installation and end grouting. The piles were instrumented with strain gages and load cells to determine load distribution in the piles. Test results showed that end grouting improves load-settlement performance of bored pile. End grouting significantly increases the shaft resistance near the pile end. The better the end condition, the greater the shaft resistance. The average shaft resistance of the bored piles with grouted end is much higher than that of piles without grouting.

The primary market driver for improving process technology is innovation, which requires a skilled and educated workforce. However, many Materials Science and Engineering departments have eliminated extractive metallurgy and chemical thermodynamics from their curricula, yet these topics contain the necessary fundamentals for process innovation. As a result, most MS&E students are ill-prepared for careers in processing. The dearth of processoriented MS&E curricula has prompted some Universities to develop a “shared” effort to offer distance education between multiple institutions [1]. A target audience for a shared process simulation course would not only benefit students, but also be a basis for an on-line course for practicing engineers faced with new or changing career choices. To fill the gap, the basics of a process simulation course was developed in an abbreviated form as series of eleven articles and Excel workbooks published in Industrial Heating magazine between July 2012 and July 2013.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion (Museum Convention Center) in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are James Harold Courtright (1908-1986), Dr. Howard L. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper concentrate treatment has been developed by Niihama Research Laboratories of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The process has numerous advantages with respect to the operational and environmental aspects. For example, copper is leached effectively from chalcopyrite concentrates by chlorine gas under atmospheric pressure. The copper in the leach solution is then separated from iron and silver by solvent extraction and undergoes electrowinning for its recovery as a highly pure copper metal; this does not require any further purification. Moreover, iron metal can be produced from the purified raffinate by electrowinning without generating a large volume of goethite or hematite, which are solid wastes generated due to iron rejection in common hydrometallurgical processes. This process can also realize the efficient recovery of precious metals. The results of batch testing and continuous-operation testing are presented in this paper.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. Il est considère qu il y a deux facteurs importants qui jouent une influence sur cette courbure. Il s’agit de l’effet des contraintes et l’effet de la structure géologique. La brève littérature qui se réfère à cet aspect du conception sur le talus des roches a été revue. L’influence géométrique de la courbure des plans a été investiguée. Il a été vu que cela un effet parabolique sur la bosse ou le su relèvement maximum possible qui peut faillir dans un puits circulaire, ou le plus resserre est la courbure concave, le plus petit est su relèvement (bosse). La courbure plane aussi affecte le volume d’un particulier su relèvement ou les talus concaves résultent dans une décroissance exponentielle en volume alors que les talus convexes accroissent la volume de ces su relèvements (bosse). Le changement de l’orientation de la bosse (su relèvement) perpendiculairement ou obliquement n’ a par affecte l’influence de al courbure sur le volume mais les volumes des bosse (su relèvement) peu profonds étaient affectes par la courbure des plans. Der Wert von diesem in der Tagebaugrube wird durch die diese Tatsache, in einer tiefen Grube, steepening der Steigungen durch 1° angezeigt; kann soviel wie $100 Million speichern. Es wird betrachtet, daß es zwei bedeutende Faktoren gibt, die eine Rolle im Einfluß der Planbiegung spielen. Diese zwei Faktoren sind der Effekt des Druckes und der Effekt der geologischen Struktur. Die dürftige Literatur, die diesen Aspekt des Felsensteigungdesigns betrifft, wurde wiederholt. Der geometrische Einfluß der Planbiegung wurde dann nachgeforscht. Die Planbiegung beeinflußt auch das Volumen eines bestimmten Keils, in dem konkave Steigungen eine exponentiale Abnahme an den Volumen ergeben und konvexe Steigungen exponential Keilvolumen erhöht haben. The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the strategic drivers of the mining sec-tor over the last half century, which has been guided by a varying and expanding list of motivations. While companies cannot survive for long unless they are making profits, the strategic drivers of the industry have gone far beyond profits since at least the mid-1970s when environmental concerns began to be taken seriously. For the most part, these forces have followed global trends and public opinion, but they have been shaped and magnified by the significant, often dominant role that the mining sector plays in many economies. While the mining sector used to be primarily motivated by the first pillar of sustainable development -i.e. the economics pillar-, in the 1970s the second environmental pillar became an important factor in decision making, and in the 1990s the third social pillar emerged as a major driver.1 The entrance of new strategic drivers has also had considerable impact on technological and organizational developments in the mining industry; however, technological changes, driven by cost reduction considerations, have in turn impacted the strategic drivers of the industry, resulting in the need for further technological and organizational developments.

Lime, soda ash and similar precipitants have been the industry standard for treatment of acid rock drainage (ARD) because of their proven ability and low per-gallon operational cost. However, these methods carry serious environmental drawbacks and high life-cycle costs. KEECO’s Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology has all the positive characteristics of conventional ARD-treatment systems but none of the drawbacks. SME achieves highly effective treatment in a single step, provides options for ARD prevention and recovery of metals, requires lower capital expenditures, generates smaller volumes of higher-density sludge, consistently passes leach tests, and eliminates long-term liabilities associated with potential metal remobilization and hazardous waste landfilling.

TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years.
