El presente trabajo describe el planeamiento estratégico para el sostenimiento de la sociedad minera El Brocal a través de la gestión en el trabajo organizacional. Su principal objetivo es aumentar la productividad y la reducción de costos de minado y la planta concentradora. Para ello, se tomó el modelo de planeamiento estratégico desarrollado por Fred David y se realiza el análisis y diagnóstico interno de la empresa, a partir de los antecedentes, situación actual de la empresa, evaluación de la misión, objetivos actuales y cadena de valor de la empresa, luego se clasifica a la industria minera y se integra los resultados obtenidos, la matriz de evaluación del factor externo (EFE) y la matriz de evaluación del factor interno (EFI); para así elaborar la matriz (FODA) a partir de la cual se formula as estrategias por seguir. Finalmente, se redefine la misión de futura de SMEB y se ejecuta las estrategias y las acciones en las áreas funcionales.

The low potential hydrophobic state of pyrite in amyl xanthate flotation with nitrogen is of particular interest with regard to the N2TEC flotation technology currently being used for the recovery of auriferous pyrite at Newmont’s Lone Tree Plant in Nevada. The N2TEC system had been found to operate satisfactorily, but cyanide in the flotation mill water appeared to be responsible for a loss in pyrite recovery. This supposition was confirmed with laboratory experiments and a program was initiated to study flotation chemistry variables by electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements. Experimental results show that activation of pyrite in such cyanide solutions can be achieved more effectively with lead than with copper. Subsequently, based on these fundamental studies, significant improvement at the Lone Tree Plant was achieved by lead activation, in which case the recovery increased to expected levels. The effect of activator is particularly significant not only with respect to pyrite depression by residual cyanide, but also with respect to collector (PAX) consumption and the initial state of the pyrite surface. Each of these issues is being studied in detail and research progress is discussed herein.

1. INTRODUCTION It gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 30th International Conference of Safety in Mines Research Institutes. I would also like to bid a special welcome to all of the international delegates who have travelled to Johannesburg to take part in what surely be a most rewarding session of deliberations. As you come together over next four days, you will have a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and information on strategies and practices for the implementation of sustainable patterns of development. The objectives of this meeting are both timely and far-reaching, as countries around the globe work towards the sustainable use of the world resources. Each of you brings a high level of expertise to these deliberations. I know that you will make the most of this opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities to highlight the most innovative and technologically efficient methods of social protection in order to ensure an increase in the quality of life, health, safety and living environment for the peoples of the Africa. Our country, although endowed with an immense and diverse array of mineral deposits, is perhaps best known in the mining industry for the fact that it is the world’s biggest producer of gold. Although South African gold production has declined over the past years and the industry faces serious problems, it is a myth that the South African industry is moribund. There is a new energy coursing through the South African producers which will ensure their powerful presence for many years to come, based not only on their domestic production but also and probably increasingly on their external operations. Africa features prominently in the latter category.

The Mission Valley Viaduct is located in San Diego, California. This structure is the intersection of Interstate 8 and 805. The project consists of the main viaduct, 8 connecting ramps, and one highway overpass. This job was originally built back in the 70's. After the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, Caltrans began an aggressive program to seismic retrofit all of its bridges throughout the state. Most retrofit designs required major upgrades to the existing footings. These footing upgrades consisted of either driven or drilled shaft piling. The existing footings of the Mission Valley interchange were supported on driven H pile. The soils throughout the site were dense sands and gravels, cobbles, occasional boulders with a dense sandstone bearing strata, which varied through out the site. It was this sandstone strata that the engineers designed their pile tips around. High ground water in sandy soils created a high probability of liquefaction in all of the upper stratas.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

Discussion of the paper of Frederick Laist, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1147 to 1162. J. C. DICK, Salt Lake City, Utah :-I would like to ask Mr. Laist why a 10 per cent. salt solution was used. MR. LAIST :-The reason for using salt in the solution is to get .the sulphur. The solution of dilute sulphuric acid has no solvent action on the sulphur even after roasting, and the addition of the salt is made primarily to dissolve the sulphur chlorides. MR. DICK:-I would like to ask also if you made any experiments as to grinding fine your calcines, rather than leaving the coarse material. MR. LAIST :-We have not made any experiments along those lines except in the laboratory, but the objections which we have to grinding are that the difficulties of roasting are very much greater when roasting finely ground material than when roasting coarse material, and the difficulties of leaching are somewhat increased; the percolating system is simpler and easier to manipulate, particularly when acid solutions are used, so that we prefer from our experience not to grind. (communication to -the Secretary +) :-In order to meet the conditions involved in his ore-treatment problem, Mr. Laist has developed a very interesting and apparently successful metallurgical hybrid which he calls the oxychloridizing roast. The lower floors of the MacDougall furnaces are made to accomplish what used to be done on the " cooling floor" in the old days of salt roasting and " hypo " or brine leaching of silver ores.

This paper describes a very exacting tunneling project. Planning and technical realization of this service and transportation tunnel was especially difficult as a matter of vibration control, because the tunnel is situated only a few meters under Maria Hospital, which is one of the most busiest hospitals in Helsinki. In this hospital there are many departments for bedpatients, research and treatment with high-tech equipment, operational surgery and a big laboratory. Besides access tunnels are situated near several apartment buildings. The functionality of the tunnel required the placement of the access tunnels to be straight towards these apartment buildings for which special care for blast induced air pressure had to be taken.

This presentation identifies some of the more common problems associated with cofferdam construction. After the various problems are identified, they are briefly explained and possible solutions and preventive measures are noted. Photographic slides used during the seminar illustrate the conditions. This discussion is limited to cofferdams which are braced structures excavated inside to allow access for construction. The common procedure is to drive sheet piling and then alternatively install bracing and excavate. They can be located either on land or in water. Loads are applied by soil, water, surcharge pres-sure, eccentricities, and impact loads. The loads are resisted by the sheet piling, the bracing, and the soil below the bottom of the excavation; each of these three components must be capable of resisting the applied loads.

A number of base-metal operations would like to increase production to take advantage of the higher metals prices. In general, this higher production should not be achieved with major operating changes. In hydrometallurgical facilities, leaching and pressure leaching represents one area where upfront limitations may be a bottleneck to the capacity of the entire plant. An assessment of the capacity of the leaching tanks and autoclaves was performed using a predictive model within the AweSym flowsheet simulator. The model is described, and the results of the application of the model to a number of different leaching reactors are presented. It is argued that the leaching number, which relates the residence time, particle size and the leaching rate, is of prime importance. Finally it is shown that there are some unexpected catastrophic events in increasing production capacity without a thorough understanding of the leaching operation.

Bureau of Mines in the form of information circulars. Then enough circulars have been completed it is planned to publish a more complete and comprehensive paper in bulletin form dealing with the subject of underground transportation. Progress reports, followed by bulletins, will be prepared from time to time dealing with other subjects included in the general study of mining methods at individual mines, such as mine development, drilling, and blasting; stoping methods (each principal stoping method to be summarized in a separate paper); ventilation; wage, contract end bonus systems, etc.

Ammonium Nitrate (AN) - based commercial explosives are non-ideal explosives. This is because the chemical and physical structure is heterogeneous on a distance scale comparable to, and in many cases larger than, the reaction zone in the detonating explosive. Such systems consist of inter-molecular fuel-oxidizer systems. Attempts have been made to minimize the heterogeneous nature (inter-molecular distances) of these explosives; emulsion systems are the latest examples of these commercialized AN-based explosives which balance cost, utility and performance. This latter factor (increased performance) is a direct result of increasing the contact between oxidizer and fuel.

Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). Introduction The South African Witwatersrand is the world's largest gold-bearing province and gold producing district. But the production capacity of the very big mines (Vaal Reef, Driefontein Cons., Western Holdings, Western Deep Levels, and others) is not as large as that of the Soviet Union's Muruntau gold mine. The Muruntau gold-bearing ore body was discovered in 1956-57, and has been in operation since that time. In the early 1970s, this mine produced 70 to 80 t/a (2.3 to 2.6 million oz per year) of gold. Within the last few years it has become the world's largest producing gold mine. Russian authors do not publish ore reserve or rate of production data. But it is very likely that the Muruntau mining complex, which involves several ore bodies, is currently producing about 143 t/a (4.6 million oz per year) of gold. Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) is in the process of developing an expansion of their Damang Open Pit gold mine in Ghana. AGL acquired the Damang mine in January 2002, with SRK participating in the geotechnical investigation and design for the project since 2001. A deep resource drilling program, completed during 2004, intersected an extension of the orebody below the then planned final pit floor. A feasibility study has been completed to determine the economic extraction of this deep ore with an expanded pit shell. The Damang mine is in a stockwork sulphide deposit at the culmination of the Damang anticline. The deposit occurs as hydrothermal mineralisation associated with dominantly east dipping thrusts and sub-horizontal quartz veins. Primary gold mineralisation also occurs in the conglomerates of the Tarkwaian Formation. The geological units consist of steep easterly dipping dolerite, sandstone, siltstone and phyllite beds, with the weathering profile comprising saprolites overlying a relatively thin joint oxidized horizon. It is planned to deepen the current open pit to a final depth of up to 270 m, primarily by the development of a push-back of the eastern and western walls. The edge of the Eastern Tailings Storage Facility (ETSF) is currently located within 80 to 100 m of the crest of the existing pit. The geotechnical design focused on the optimization of the bench face angle and finally recommended a ?Steep Slope Strategy?, involving 24m high near vertical benches. Limiting bench stack heights of 96m at a maximum of 66° were derived from the influence of major structures and the variation in rock mass conditions. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps. One of the main design challenges was to optimise the standoff distance between the final pit crest and the ETSF. This process had to consider maximum access to the resource without undue influence on or from the nearby tailings dam. A planned increase to the height of the dam wall was an additional factor in the design. Dewatering of the pit walls was also a major consideration in this tropical environment.

"Abstract In Scandinavia the use of steel pipe piles in bridge foundations started in the mid-1980s and has increased steadily since. As the piles driven in soft soils are slender, they can fail by buckling. Buckling usually requires taking into account the second order effect in structural and geotechnical design.The purpose of this paper is to derive formulas for demonstrating the theory behind the formulas given in literature for the second order effect of initially bent piles.IntroductionIn Scandinavian countries solid bedrock usually lies at moderate depth. If the bridge site is in an area where the soil above the bedrock is soft, the bridge is usually founded on end-bearing piles resting on the bedrock.The main purpose of the piles is to transfer axial forces into bearing soil. Like columns, piles can lose their stability by buckling when surrounded by soft soil. When axial compression on a slender, initially straight, pile reaches a particular value called the critical load, the pile is subjected to lateral deflection and loses stability. The soil around the pile suffers a corresponding deformation. This soilstructure interaction increases the critical load compared to a pile without surrounding soil.It is very unlikely that piles are ideally straight. Initial curvature along with curvature and deviation caused by the installation of piles causes bending moments to the pile when normal force is applied. These lateral displacements increase when normal force increases. This increase of moment is called asecond order effect.Eurocode and literatureEurocode 7 includes guidelines for the design of piles (Eurocode 3, section 5 includes design of steel piles). However, there are no clear guidelines for considering the second order effects related to piles surrounded by soil. Eurocodes advise doing structural design of piles the same way as in the case of columns. With columns, the second order effect is taken into consideration by multiplying the first order moment with the factor shown below (SFS EN-1992-1-1, 2005):"

This report addresses remote monitoring of coal waste impoundments for stability. Existing automated geotechnical monitoring systems are described and reviewed along with details of instruments suitable for such systems. An impoundment in West Virginia which was in the construction stage was instrumented and monitored between July 1979 and may 1981. Sensors which measure surface and subsurface parameters including settlement, horizontal deflection, surface tilt, pore water pressure, seepage, pond level, and meteorological parameters were installed. Data from the 37 sensors were collected by on-site logger and transmitted by telephone to a central processing station in Seattle for recording and interpretation. Difficulties were encountered with telephone and powerline outages and malfunction of electronic units. Detailed descriptions of the design and performance of the system are provided along with evaluation and comparison with other systems. Recommendations for improving and expanding the capabilities of the monitoring system are given.

The correct specification and then selection of primary or major fans for an underground mine is a critical decision not only in terms of fan capital and operating costs, but also safety and reliability which usually has a major impact on mine production. In addition, fan manufacturers may spend tens of thousands of dollars preparing proposals for a purchase enquiry for primary fans especially where they have complete responsibility for the installation (turnkey projects). There are many good reasons to thoroughly and fairly adjudicate fan tenders. This paper casts a light on the sometimes murky world that lies between base metals product æout the gateÆ, and money in the bank. Whether your base metals are leaving the mine as a refined product, or as an ore or concentrate, the generally accepted method of value determination is a London Metal Exchange price, usually measured at some point after the material has left your control. In this paper, the structure and operation, regulation and the reasons for the use of the London Metal Exchange are explored. In addition, the risks and opportunities that terminal market pricing provides to mine managers are explained, with particular reference to hedging. The paper also deals with the structure of the sales contract, including management of shipping issues, agreement of delivered quality, documentation and administrative issues. The selection of counterparties, the role of traders in the market and the growing influence of China and India as base metal consumers and competitors are also addressed.
