"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

This report is the 24th in a series summarizing research on coal and related investigations3 by the Bureau of Mines. The coal programs of the Bureau of Mines include a wide range of theoretical and applied studies--such as fundamental studies of coal structure and properties, the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and work toward more effective processing and utilization of coal. The scope of these programs is indicated, in topical outline, by the table of contents. These investigations are integrated into a broad but coordinated effort to develop information on coal that will benefit the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting the wise conservation and utilization of our national coal resources. Any attempt to summarize in one volume the progress in all of the program areas indicated must necessarily be limited to a brief review of developments, without detailed reporting of the data. However, while the brief discussion in each section will present only the highlights of the Bureau&apos;s work during the year, details of many of the operations or investigations described here can be found in the publications cited throughout the text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications.

This paper presents experimental evidence that supports the use of bromine/bromide as a potential alternative to conventional cyanidation for gold leaching. The study evaluated a brominebased lixiviant, Stabilized Bromine, with considerably lower vapour pressure than liquid bromine. Using a rotating device, the rate of gold dissolution was determined at various concentrations of this reagent. The reactivity of pure pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite minerals was also evaluated in stabilized bromine reagent. Furthermore, bromine leaching of gold in a number of gold bearing ores was undertaken. Results showed that significantly higher gold recovery can be achieved with bromine than with cyanide when leaching gold encapsulated in sulphides, but bromine consumption was high owing to simultaneous oxidation of the sulphides. The greatest promise for the bromine leach process was with oxidized gold ores. The recovery of gold from oxide ores with bromine was comparable to that achievable with cyanide and bromine consumption was reasonable when leaching was conducted at a near neutral pH of ~6. In the case of oxidized gold ores containing copper mineralization, it is possible that bromine consumption may be lower than cyanide consumption, since there is evidence to suggest that bromine is less reactive than cyanide with copper minerals.

As the search for new sources of energy and minerals leads to more remote areas of the country - and the world - the need to plan for adequate housing and community facilities for the construction and operations workforces and their families takes on an importance equal to the mining and processing facilities themselves. A corollary to the need for planning is the increasingly crucial need for development companies to devise effective strategies for dealing with the local communities impacted by these projects. Experience has amply demonstrated the high price to be paid for failure to learn this lesson, a price measured in lost productivity, confrontation with local communities, labor turnover, mental health and other social and eocnomic problems. In Sweetwater, Wyoming, a new industrial activity caused the population to double from 18,000 to 36,000 between 1970 and 1974. During that period industrial productivity fell 25 to 40 percent, cost overruns on the principal new industrial facility exceeded 33 percent, annual employee turnover rates climbed above 100 percent, the local mental health clinic workload increased nine times and complaints to the local law enforcement agency increased 60 percent.

The mineralogy of the Avalon Nechalacho deposit is complex with significant fractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb found in refractory minerals such as zircon and fergusonite. Sulphuric acid baking followed by water leaching can be used to extract REEs from flotation concentrates, but acid baking does not completely "crack" the zircon and fergusonite, so the extractions of Zr, Nb, and HREEs are not high. An alternative flowsheet has been developed that is able to obtain significantly improved extractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb from flotation concentrates or acid bake residues. This is accomplished by cracking the zircon and fergusonite minerals with caustic soda at high temperatures, followed by water washing to recover excess caustic soda and soluble sodium silicates and phosphates. REEs, Zr, and Nb in the solid residue can then be solubilized with HCl or H2SO4. This paper highlights some of the findings from an extensive laboratory program and discusses several flowsheet implications.

Development of metallurgical flowsheets from drill core to production of finished metal involves two main domains: process mineralogy to sample the ore and develop a successful flowsheet producing saleable concentrate; and extractive metallurgy to convert that saleable concentrate to finished metal. Effective flowsheet development for a new or brown-field concentrator and processing facility is essential to project schedule and return on investment. Over the last decade in particular, the integration of geology, mineralogy, sampling, and mineral processing have empowered the development of an improved practice in flowsheet development. The use of geometallurgical units as a basis for best-practice sampling delivers representative study material to the laboratory. Modern automated mineralogy characterises the whole rock assembly and paymetal mineral hosting, to address downstream process implications. Batch scale flotation testing then uses this information to design and perform well-focused strategies. At early stages of the project, the Extractive Metallurgy team is engaged to determine processing constraints or other economic drivers in conversion of the saleable concentrate into finished metal. The team evaluates available technologies, assesses the impurities and key properties of the given concentrate. In many cases, changes to mineral processing flowsheet are required to maximize value per tonne of concentrate. Site conditions, availability of infrastructure, energy and power all play an important role. Modern metallurgical simulation tools such as FactSage™ and METSIM™ can quickly define the appropriate test program for each process. Bench scale testing and appropriate scale of piloting can confirm simulations and provide design criteria. A case study demonstrates how effective use of these tools and a multidisciplinary team can accelerate flowsheet development, while reducing costs and ensuring that the designed processing facilities maximize project value with minimum risk.

This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.

The hydration kinetics of MgO, namely magnesia or magnesium oxide, obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O has been studied. Nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) was prepared by the reaction of MgCl2 with Na2CO3 in a mixed-suspension mixed-product removal (MSMPR) crystallizer at 40 °C. Three magnesium oxide samples were obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O in muffle furnace at 900, 1100 and 1300 °C for 3 h, respectively. The hydration experiments of MgO samples were investigated at 25, 35 and 45 °C for 24 h in a stirred batch reactor. The hydration results indicate that the rate and extent of hydration of magnesia decreased remarkably with hydration temperature and increased with decreasing calcination temperature at a constant hydration temperature. The whole hydration reaction of magnesia was supposed to experience the promotive period and declining period. An empirical kinetic model ( k t p -?ln(1-??) ??) and a modification of the classical shrinking core model for diffusion control ( k t b d -?-?3 2 ????1 [1 (1 ??) ] ) have been applied to fit the experimental data of hydration in two stages, respectively. The values of kinetic parameters ( p k and d k ) were obtained by regression analysis and the activation energy of the sample at 900 °C was estimated to be 34.23 kJ/mol. The comparison between MgO from calcination of synthetic MgCO3·3H2O and a commercial MgO used in silicon steel production was carried out, indicating that special silicon steel grade MgO can be obtained by calcination of MgCO3·3H2O below 900 °C.

"The unconformity beneath 75 per cent or over 6000 km2 of the Athabasca Basin in Alberta lies within economically exploitable depths. The basement beneath this unconformity consists of an extension of the Wylie Lake Pluton, locally faulted and containing areas of mylonitic rocks. While the rocks of the Wylie Lake Pluton are not promising host rocks for uranium ore deposits, the areas of mylonites, graphitic rocks and possible remnants of granitegneiss would bear closer examination. One area of maficmylonites shows a weathering zone enriched in Si, Ca, Na, Pb, Ni, Ba, Co, Sr, Zn and U in addition to reported values of 0.08 oz/ton gold. This zone occurs beneath 800 m to 900 m of Athabasca Group sediments, but similar rock types are present beneath much thinner cover elsewhere. Detailed geophysical exploration is required over the area of thinner Athabasca Group rocks to define more precisely the areas of promising basement rock type.IntroductionThe Athabasca Basin in Alberta has considerable economic potential which has not yet been realized. The geological setting is closely analogous to parts of the basin in Saskatchewan which host major uranium deposits. Recent advances in geophysical techniques have led to deposits being located in Saskatchewan below 600 m of cover. This means that the unconformity between the Athabasca Group and the basement lies at exploitable depths over 6000 km2 or 75 per cent of the Alberta portion of the basin. Much of this area was only cursorily examined almost a decade ago. In addition, Alberta&apos;s new Metallic Mineral Regulations have clarified the regulatory situation in the area, and opened up much land for exploration. This article is based on Wilson&apos;s (1985a) study of the Athabasca Group and Wilson&apos;s (1986) work on the basement and alteration beneath the Athabasca Group in Alberta."

Reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO,, is currently the subject of extensive research. A novel strategy is put forward here, based on a biomimetic approach providing accelerated deposition into carbonate form for long-term sequestration. It offers the advantages of a process that: does not require concentration of CO, from flue gases; could potentially be used in an on-site scrubber to provide a plant-by-plant solution to reducing CO, emissions; is an environmentally benign procss with an environmentally benign product; and is based on readily available, low-cost reagents (except perhaps the catalyst).

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI&apos; are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of &quot;finished&quot; fines. "Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. Fundamental studies to interpret the effect of bubble size on particle collection in industrial environments are largely absent in the literature. Partly because of this lack of practical knowledge, many mineral processing practitioners perceive laboratory “bubble size” studies to be valuable academic exercises, but not something that can be directly applied to daily production issues."

In 1943, the Federal Bureau of Mines began a program of thermodynamic investigations of petroleum constituents and related compounds. These systematic, long-range studies, which were conducted in the thermodynamics laboratory of the Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center and are still continuing, have resulted in a substantial quantity of data valuable to the petroleum industry and science in general. As separate phases of these studies were completed, the findings were promptly reported in the scientific press. During the past 16 years, 89 journal articles, giving the results obtained for individual compounds and small groups of related compounds, were published, mainly in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Physical Chemistry. In addition, members of the Bureau staff have contributed six chapters to specialized reference books. This circular, prepared in response to many requests, lists these 95 published papers, giving an abstract of the contents of each, as well as titles, authors, and literature citations. The journal articles are listed in the order of their preparation, which closely approximates the chronological order of their publication; hence, the item number to the left of each citation corresponds to the assigned contribution number. For the convenience of the reader, the abstract section is followed by a condensed bibliography, arranged alphabetically by senior author and keyed to the abstracts by appropriate contribution numbers in parentheses after the entry.

By understanding the ore breakage characteristics and utilising comminution circuit modelling, the benefits of SAG mill feed size manipulation can be readily assessed. This paper looks at the benefits and problems of total secondary crushing of mill feed and advocates partial secondary crushing as a means of improving grinding efficiency for certain hard ores. Case studies are reviewed for new and existing SAG mill circuits.
