CONCEPTS AND REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Charters Towers region holds many keys to the metallogeny associated with the complex geological development of eastern Australia during the Palaeozoic. Tectonic, magmatic and volcano-sedimentary depositional episodes can be identified and related to the chronological development of batholithic host rocks (Clarke & Paine, 1970; Henderson, 1986; Murray, 1986). Pre-batholithic basement rocks in the north (Charters Towers Metamorphics) consist of a package of amphibolite grade schists interlayered with and intruded by gabbros and diorites (Peters, 1987). To the south (Seventy Mile Range Group) greenschist facies Cambro-Ordovician rocks overly some of the basement. The lower age of this basement is not constrained, parts of it could be as old as Pre-Cambrian. Mid-Ordovician (approx. 470 my) to Lower Devonian (approx. 400 my) age I-Type granitoid plutons of the composite Ravenswood batholith intrude the pre-batholith basement and the Seventy Mile Range Group. Igneous activity was initiated again in the Carboniferous with the extrusion of rhyolitic lavas and pyroclastics associated with porphyry and high-level intrusive complexes (Wyatt et al., 1971). The Ravenswood block is bounded by Devonian and Tertiary sedimentary sequences of mainly continental provenence.

A simple production technique has been initiated and implemented at Oaky Creek open cut coal mine to optimise recovery of coal from the relatively thin geological seams. The production technique is based upon minimising coal dilution through careful dragline operation and the selective use of mine mobile equipment to clean the top of coal. In addition, recovery of coal from the pits has been increased by refining blasting and dragline methods.The implementation of the recovery optimisation programme at Oaky Creek has provided significant economic benefits from increased yield through the preparation plant by the reduction in dilution, and from increased raw coal tonnage through improved pit recovery methods.

The influence of three important para- meters which affect the induration of iron-ore pellets, viz temperature, time, and lime content, have been assessed in terms of internal pellet structure and commonly-used pellet quality criteria. The pellets studied were produced from a typical hematite ore from the Pilbara area of Western Australia, using a 25 cm dia. pot-grate test rig. Isothermal laboratory induration tests were conducted in accordance with a statistically-planned programme. The internal structures were studied by optical microscopic examination of polished sections of the test pellets. The effects of SFCA (silico- ferrite of calcium and aluminium) and slag formation, matrix consolidation and grain modi- fications were studied, and have been related to pellet properties and to the time/temperature histories produced by the firing conditions chosen. The implications of the data for commercial pellet plant operations are discussed.

Season cracking of brass has received wide attention and there is a wealth of technical literature on the subject. Its causes arc fairly well understood and means for its prevention are inexpensive and effective, so that the frequency of failures from this source has diminished of recent years. But its sister phenomenon, the failure of annealed brass by reason of applied tensile stress plus a certain type of corrosion, has received less attention, though it has been responsible for occasional more or less troublesome cases of cracking of brass in service. The work described in the following pages was undertaken about two years ago to determine the relative resistance of various commercial brass mixtures to stress-corrosion cracking, and to learn something of the controlling factors. By stress-corrosion cracking we mean the cracking of brass free from internal stresses by reason of applied tensile stress and simultaneous attack by certain corrosive agents. Rogers,' in discussing a paper by Hatfield and Thirkell, says: " He had also applied a solution of mercuric salt to tensile test pieces of brass whilst they were under stress in the testing machine. At very moderate stresses such test pieces cracked, and very readily broke." Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson2 subjected test pieces to simultaneous corrosion and tensile stress. In order to determine the minimum stress detectable in brass by the mercurous nitrate test, tensile samples were placed under stress and treated with mercurous nitrate solution. They found that brass stressed below a minimum did not crack. Dr. McAdam3 has investigated the effect of corrosion on the fatigue limit of brasses, among other materials. He directed a stream of either fresh or salt water against the specimen while it was undergoing fatigue test. For more than 30 years shearer loaders have been the most important winning machines for,longwall mining. While the machines of the first generation had a driving power of only 100 or so kW, the present day shearer loaders may be powered by more than 1000 kW. Daily outputs of 24000 tonnes have now been reached, but this still does not set a limit. If the deposit conditions allow, further increases are possible. This requires the optimum coordination of all system components. For this paper the use of coal plows has been of little import as plows have found no favour, and nor are they likely to do so in today's economics in Australian coal mining.

The problems facing the metallurgical industry from the viewpoint of the range of unacceptable residues, flue dusts and slags currently produced from the electrolytic zinc process, electric arc furnace scrap treatment, and blast furnace operation in lead smelting and the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are addressed. The application of the Ausmelt technology is discussed and analysed for the pyrometallurgical treatment of zinc plant residues, steel plant flue dusts and lead blast furnace and ISP slags, as well as the more complex issue of smelter modernisation to avoid production of zinc plant residues in the future. Processes developed from pilot work are described and indications of the economics of treatment of electrolytic zinc plant neutral residue and jarosite are given.

Over the last 20 years the blasting industry has progressed from the stage of being artform to a science as it is today. The use of computers to simulate blasting results has allowed blasting engineers to accurately pre- dict blast results and to optimise their blasting. This paper describes the computer blast simulator called BLASPA and its various applications in blasting. BLASPA allows the blasting engineer to predict blast results given known details of explosive properties, their distribution, rock type and properties, hole size, burden, spacing, collar and subdrill. The simulator runs mathematical situations and outputs numerical estimates of fragmentation and muckpile results. The paper discusses results which show that the mathematical outputs correlate very closely with actual results seen in the field, thus confirming the validity of the simulator. BLASPA can be used to help improve blast design by predicting stress levels in the rock mass and consequent rock breakage.

Marine design and construction methods are presented on the caisson foundations for the tower piers at the Brooklyn, Ben Franklin, Delaware Memorial 1st, Tappan Zee, Walt Whitman, Throgs Neck, Verrazano Narrows, Delaware Memorial 2nd, and Newport Bridges. All of the bridges are founded on caissons, bearing on bedrock, soil, or piling. Caissons at the Tappan Zee Bridge are partially supported by piling and partially by buoyant forces. General subsurface conditions for each are provided. The purpose of this paper is inform engineers how bridge foundations using caissons were built over major waterways in the Northeastern USA in the past, anticipating a surge of new bridge construction in the near future.

The Early Proterozioc Pine Creek Geosyncline hosts a large number of gold showings. Mineralisation types include stratiform, synsedimentary deposits within iron formation and carbonaceous mudstone; disseminations in granophyric intrusives; and quartz vein related concentrations in the form of shear fillings, saddle reefs and stockworks. Stratiform gold deposits preferentially formed near penecontemporareous faults during periods of basin instability. Intrusive basic magmas later assimilated some stratiform mineralisation and subsequently redeposited it within differentiated phases. Gold was again remobilized during regional deformation and metamorphism. Stratiform mineralisation was upgraded insitu in high strain zones and gold was mobilized into metamorphic fluids. Fluid induced fracturing during prograde metamorphism and later uplift caused the deposition of extensive gold rich vein systems. The genetic relationship between gold deposit types is reflected in the clustering of showings along regional anticlines, and provides a powerful exploration tool. The large volume of 'exhalative'òmaterial in the Geosyncline with elevated gold content suggests significant economic stratiform mineralisation may be present, and probably provides a source for later disseminated and vein deposits.

Completion and production data presented for three wells in the Oakville area of Live Oak County, Texas, which were completed near the gas-oil or water-oil contact, indicate that coning may not be as prevalent a cause of failure in such cases as is commonly assumed. Failure in the cases discussed is indicated to be due instead to: (I) erosion of the formation, (2) flowing out of mud filter cake, or (3) failure of the cement. An open-hole gravel-pack type of completion procedure is proposed for preventing failures of this kind by preventing movement of all solid material in the space in which completion is made. Various combinations of layers of gravel, sand, and cement are utilized for this purpose. Experimental results and theoretical discussion as to the applicability of gravel pack completion are included. Introduction This paper is primarily a study of the reasons for failure of oil-well completions near the gas-oil or oil-water contact, and suggests a procedure for increasing the efficiency of this type of completion. The value of improvement in completion effectiveness near the gas or water zone is not confined, however, to wells of relatively thin oil columns. Thick oil columns become thin as depletion progresses. It would seem to follow that the minimum distance from the gas or water zone at which completion can be made in a new well indicates the limit to which depletion may be carried in a well having an oil column of any initial magnitude. Only four ways can be postulated in which high gas-oil or water-oil ratio can initially occur if the zone exposed for production is within the oil column: 1. Failure of the cementing material. 2. Vertical coning. 3. Failure along the boundary between the cement and the wall of the well. 4. Failure of the formation comprising the wall of the well. Cementing materials such as portland cement and plastics have reached a high stage of development. Failures of this type are probably due almost always to extraneous causes such as mud contamination rather than to faulty cementing material. Vertical coning can and obviously does occur. However, the usual occurrence of thin impermeable streaks in sand sections and the success with which open-hole drill-stem tests can be made near the gas-oil contact suggest that over-all effective vertical permeability, and in turn vertical coning, is less prevalent than frequently is assumed. Much has been written on failure by flowing out of the mud filter cake between cementing material and the formation. A filter cake is always present if, prior to cementing, mud has come in contact with a permeable formation at pressures exceeding the pressure head of the fluid it contains. In all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly-growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief constituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity for those elemen'ts which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to heat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; 2, to prevent the iron from entering the slag, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

IN our never ending search for new and better ways of underground mining, we find that transportation has had its share of new ideas in the past few years. The old and still effective method of track haulage has had some competition from rubber tired cars and belt conveyors, each of which has its own safety hazards which demand close scrutiny in any safety study. The use of shuttle cars, in particular, has introduced clearance hazards caused by the absence of the more or less positive guides formed by the rails of a track sys¬tem; likewise the requirement of greater clearance tends to increase roof hazards which we all know to be great enough with the best of methods. However, the subject of transportation hazards is too broad to be covered entirely in one paper, so I will confine myself to track methods which carry the preponderance of underground tonnage. I am quite sure that to this group it is an evident fact that haulage accidents are of major importance. However, to stress the point, it may be well to look at a few figures. SINCE their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high hearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of hearings made from tin-hale or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in hearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on hearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condition, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organizations of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements. Spectral data is digitally recorded across 256 channels depending on energy levels of the photoelectric effect. Data processing is being developed with the objective of calibrating channel amplitudes to mineral type which will lead to a direct log of selected mineral grade as a continuous trace with depth.

In 1917 Haighl presented evidence that under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress metals may fail at lower stresses than if the corrosion is prior to the cyclic stress. In 1926 the author, while investigating the cooling effect of water on the fatigue resistance of metals, found that under these conditions steel specimens fail at stresses far below the endurance limit.2 (By "endurance limit" is here meant the fatigue limit obtained with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and corrosive influences.) This led to an investigation (at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md.) of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. This investigation may be divided into three parts. The first part was a general survey of the conditions necessary to cause complete failure under corrosion and cyclic stress of relatively high frequency. The entire process by which metals fail under these conditions was called LLcorrosion-fatigue." Corrosion-fatigue limits" for a large number of metals were determined and the relationships of these limits to chemical composition, heat treatment and physical properties were established. The conclusion was reached that corrosion-fatigue is due to the accelerating influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Results of this part of the investigation were presented in five papers.*-= The second part of the investigation was a preliminary study of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Each experiment was conducted in two stages. The first was a corrosion stage in which the specimen was corroded under cyclic stress; the second was a fatigue stage, in which the previously corroded specimen was tested (without further corrosion) to determine its fatigue limit. IN THE general study of coal, all evidence points in the one direction -that coals had their origin in a manner analogous to that of peat. The best method of studying coal, whether it concerns its chemistry, composition, or physical condition, is to study peat. The essentials in a study of peat are a knowledge of the chemistry of plants, knowledge of decay and of the transformation process of plant-substances into peat. A number of facts must be emphasized, namely, (1) peat is formed under wet conditions only; (2) plants grow in the place where peat is formed; (3) all the plant substances go into the bog; and (4) all the plant substances are subjected to a series of phases of decay which are (a) in the air completely above the water level but in relatively moist conditions; (b) above the water level, but covered by debris; and (c) completely submerged by both water and debris.

A new type of rockbolting system, the self drilling rockbolt, has been studied to develop a 'single pass' bolt for use in rockbolt installation in underground engineering. This single pass bolt forms the basis of a Rapid Face Bolting system which will reduce the amount of time spent in securing a roof during the operation of a continuous miner in the development of a panel.The installation efficiency and anchorage tests were performed in the laboratory on the self drilling bolt and the traditional resin anchorage. bolt. INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. Spiral concentrators are used globally in the fine coal processing industry to segregate particles, by gravitation, on the basis of density and size. Consisting of an open trough that twists vertically downwards about a central axis, a slurry mix of particles and water is fed to the top of the concentrator. Particles are then separated radially as they gravitate downward. Since their introduction to Australia in the 1940's, the generic design has evolved largely by laboratory trial-and-error investigations of different prototypes. However, this approach has proven expensive and optimal designs have not been necessarily developed. Accordingly, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis has been used recently as an alternative method of investigation, to assume as is envisaged, a role in the design process. To date, CFD models have progressed to simulations of turbulent fluid flow on current production spiral designs, and are continuing to be adapted for inclusion of particles at realistic feed concentrations. To be able to use the models confidently however, laboratory experiments must also be performed to validate the predictions during the development stage. This paper reports the current findings of an ongoing CFD and experimental program applied to one spiral unit. Satisfactory quantitative agreement has been achieved for the fluid and particulate flow characteristics, and although further validations are appropriate, the model already possesses significant potential for use as a reliable predictive design tool.

Construction of the AA Pad reclamation was completed in the fall of 2000. Seeding of the ET cover began in the late fall of 2000 and continued through May of 2001. On Saturday afternoon, June 1, 2002, a large, very localized thunderstorm struck the reclaimed AA Pad site. Eyewitnesses present at the time described a dark storm cloud parked above the site for less than half an hour. Average rainfall intensity was measured to be 122 mm (4.8 inches) per hour and peak rainfall intensity was estimated to be 213 mm (8.4 inches) to 259 mm(10.2 inches) per hour. At the time of the storm, the construction was less than two (2) years old and the vegetation had only a single season of growth. The entire period from the end of construction until the date of the storm was a drought period with below normal precipitation. Other than a few small snowmelt events, there was no precipitation event large enough to produce any significant flow in the channel network. Therefore, the very first significant runoff event was the extreme event of June 1, 2002. The storm essentially represents a large-scale field test of the design concepts used at the AA Pad site. Shortly after the storm, data was collected and analyzed with the intent of learning as much as possible about the performance of the cover system design with the expectation that the newly acquired knowledge might be utilized in future designs to further improve the performance of similar cover systems during extreme events.
