"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. The work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of the Ordnance Department, U. 8. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. Part I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elcnlents, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600' C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-stee1 forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

Pictured on these pages are the eight RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1991-92 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Durango, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 29, 1992. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Dr. Matthew Hrebar, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A mident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Most metallurgists are well acquainted with the contributions already made to the study of metals by the use of X-rays. On the one hand, the radiographic method is constantly becoming of increasing importance as a nondestructive testing procedure, while on the other hand the techniques of X-ray diffraction have made important contributions to the fundamental knowledge in studies of phase diagrams, stress conditions, and so forth. A new, and as yet insufficiently appreciated, tool exists in the application of microradiography to alloy structures. This new procedure in many respects bears the same relation to microscopic investigations as does macroradiography to the gross inspection of metal surfaces. However, where macroradiography is used ordinarily to determine the soundness of the metal structure, this new method can be used not only to investigate micro-un-soundness but also to examine the distribution of the constituent elements within the body of the alloy. When combined with the normal procedures of microscopy, this offers a technique of great potential power. It is intended in this paper to present a few examples of copper-base alloys demonstrating the additional knowledge obtained from the microradiographic method. The detection of micro-unsoundness is demonstrated in Fig. I for a sample of cartridge brass as cast. The sample ap- peared quite sound when viewed under the microscope, but in reality was thickly populated with minute voids. This application of the method conforms in every way to conventional large-scale radiography and has been used to facilitate production of metal for vacuum devices.' The true potentialities of the technique are revealed by comparison of Figs, 2a and 2b, which are respectively a photomicrograph and a microradiograph of a cast alloy of 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb. The remarkable difference in appearance provides some concept of the additional information this method may yield when used as an auxiliary to microscopic studies. Fig. 2a shows two phases of the copper-tin system plus segregated_ lumps of lead. Fig. 2b, on the other hand, shows with exceptional clarity the actual dendritic growth of the metal crystals during solidification. The practice of microradiography depends upon the laws of absorption of X-rays. This subject has been reviewed thoroughly in recent papers,l,2,3 but for clarity a brief resume will be given here. As is well known, when a beam of X-rays is transmitted through a, layer of homogeneous material, the intensity is reduced according to the relation: where Il is the transmitted intensity, I0 is the incident intensity, µ1 is the linear absorption coefficient of the material, t1 is the thickness of the material.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using statistical response surface regression analysis to predict the sulfur and ash distributions and the washability characteristics of coal along a seam in advance of mining. Prediction equations were developed with experimental data from channel, bench, and core samples from the Pittsburgh coal seam in Greene County, Pa. It was not possible, with the available experimental data, to construct mathematical models to predict ash and sulfur concentrations between sample points. In the authors' opinion, however, the good agreement between experimentally determined and predicted values at given sample points demonstrates the usefulness of the method. More input data, such as geologic information, seam characteristics (rock-to-coal ratio), petrographic analysis, and chemical data, would perhaps make it possible to predict sulfur and ash concentrations and washability characteristics between sample points.

This report describes the feasibility test of an electromagnetic method for locating, boreholes, with or without casing, that have been drilled in conjunction with mining operations but whose location with respect to the tunnel is not precisely known. The first tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Kerr-McGee Corporation, Church Rock Mining Operations, New Mexico, in September 1977. These tests demonstrated that accuracies of better than ±15% of range and ±1° of bearing can be achieved with a simple system and setups. Subsequent tests, in January 1978, on a horizontally drilled pipe line river crossing application, by Ti tan Contractors of Sacramento, California, demonstrated that accuracies of better than one-half percent of range and a few tenths of one degree of bearing can be achieved by using refined techniques. The demonstration tests were done at ranges on the order of 100 to 200 feet but the method is capable of working at much greater distances.

A 10-year, sea-water, corrosion test of tubes of several copper alloys has shown that many alloys withstood attack by solution, pitting, and dezinkification; a 1-year, salt-spray test of sheet-metal specimens of the same composition showed the same results. THE late J. P. Sparrow, chief operating engineer of the New York Edison Co., carried out a series of practical tests on condenser tubes of several copper alloys and reported on the results to the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies at its meeting in' September, 1913. In the preparation of these tubes the senior author had the pleasure of cooperating. Copper-zinc alloys in the proportions of 60-40, 70-30, 80-20, 90-10, and Admiralty metal, which is in effect 70-30 with 1 per cent. of tin, were tried. Monel metal and several copper-nickel alloys, and 8, 5, and 3 per cent. aluminum bronze were also tried. At the time of this report, the aluminum bronze had been in service for 4 1/2 years and seemed to be giving especially good results but later it began to fail and showed no substantial improvement over Admiralty metal. Monel metal was unsatisfactory and the nickel alloys apparently did not give better service than the Admiralty alloy. Previous to the publication of the report, and after considerable discussion, it was agreed that a test where tubes of different kinds could be under laboratory observation would be advisable, so the apparatus described here was set up in The American Brass Co.'s Waterbury Laboratory. This was fitted with tubes of copper, brass, bronze, nickel silver, cupro-nickel and other alloys, and the test started Oct. 11, 1912. Salt water from East River, New York harbor, was barrelled and transported to the laboratory for the test. A fresh supply, completely replacing the water in service, was obtained at the end of each six months period.

1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee coal bed is the most important bed in Grundy County arid is the only bed that has had any sustained production. There is no production, at the present time, from any of the other coal beds in the county. The Richland (Lower Sewanee or Coke Oven) coal bed has been prospected but has never been developed extensively. The Angel coal bed has been worked to a very small extent near Beersheba Springs, Tenn., for local consumption. The Battle Creek coal bed has been worked sporadically near Monteagle, Tenn. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewaneee coal bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 15 millon short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 10 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited's open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar o efeito da incorporação do rejeito de minério sulfetado de cobre em três formulações argilosas para cerâmicas estruturais. Os corpos de prova foram sinterizados em temperaturas que variaram de 900 a 1000°C, com patamar de queima de 2 horas, com o objetivo de determinar suas propriedades tecnológicas, tais como: absorção de água, densidade aparente, porosidade aparente e retração linear de queima, bem como o ensaio mecânico para a determinação do módulo de ruptura à flexão. Os resultados mostraram que as formulações obtidas apresentaram propriedades adequadas quanto à introdução do rejeito, apesar de que nenhum deles obteve valores melhores em relação à formulação sem o rejeito.

Ligas de ferro com diferentes teores de cromo, carbono e cobalto foram expostas a uma condição de atmosfera dupla, onde um lado da amostra é exposto ao vapor d'água e o outro lado a gases ricos em CO2, semelhantes aos encontrados em usinas termelétricas a carvão que utilizam o processo de oxicombustão. Os ensaios realizados em condição de atmosfera dupla a 600°C foram comparados com ensaios realizados em atmosfera simples onde todos os lados das amostras foram expostos ao mesmo gás. As amostras foram caracterizadas para comparar a corrosão em atmosferas simples e dupla e para analisar a influência dos elementos de liga na oxidação destes materiais utilizados em processos em altas temperaturas.

No projeto da usina da VSB, em Jeceaba – MG estão contemplados dois altos-fornos de 350 m3 de volume útil e uma máquina de lingotar gusa (MLG) com capacidade de 150 t/h. Um destes altos-fornos já está pronto para o início de operação. Visando realizar os testes a quente da MLG a aciaria da VSB tem produzido aço com alto teor de carbono para testar o equipamento. Realizaram-se 07 etapas de testes que possibilitaram a implantação de algumas melhorias na MLG, coletar dados sobre a logística de movimentação de panelas, estimar perdas térmicas do gusa e treinar o pessoal para a operação. Nesta contribuição técnica descrevem-se os testes realizados e as modificações decorrentes.

Chemical metathesis and electrochemical reductive conversion of chalcopyrite in the presence of cupric ions were studied in sulfuric acid solutions for temperatures up to 90°C. The process results in the displacement of iron in the chalcopyrite lattice by copper ions with rejection of ferrous ions to the aqueous phase. The rate of reaction was found to be very slow, requiring subsieve-sized particles for extensive reaction to occur. The reaction was insensitive to copper ion concentration. Stirred ball milling of chalcopyrite introduces lattice strain. The reaction rate with strained particles was markedly higher than with annealed chalcopyrite. The reaction rate was found to be diffusion-limited, showing two distinct reaction stages corresponding to the formation of CuS (covellite) followed by Cu1.8S (digenite). The experimental activation energy for the first stage was 102 J (24.4 kcal) and the second stage 123 3 (29.4 -kcal) per mole. The rate-controlling process is diffusion of lattice ions, probably iron. The enhanced rate after milling is attributed to a recrystallization process which provides new paths for diffusion along dislocations and grain boundaries.

I speak to you today on the subject assigned to me, "Subsidence - a Real or Imaginary Problem", as a representative of Consolidation Coal Company (a wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Oil Company). The information I relate to you is our experience in the Pittsburgh Coal Company Division of Consol and covers the Pennsylvania properties and mines with particular emphasis on the mines in the south- western portion of the State or in the immediate vicinity of Pittsburgh, Pa. Mining of Freeport and Pittsburgh seams of coal in the Pittsburgh vicinity dates back over one hundred years. Consol, or its predecessor, Pittsburgh Coal Company, has been actively engaged in mining in the area since Pittsburgh Coal Company was organized in 1900. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania came into prominence as the Steel City largely because of the vast reserves of high grade metallurgical coal readily available in the immediate vicinity and also because of its favorable river transportation. Early in the 1900's we operated over 100 small coal mines, with operations located in the Counties of Allegheny, Fayette, Washington, Westmoreland. We have also operated mines in Somerset and Greene Counties. Titles in Pennsylvania can be in three estates: (1) title in fee, (2) title to the mineral, (3) mining rights permitting the removal and extraction of the mineral with or without waiver of surface damage. Consol has over the years acquired good legal title to the coal lands purchased from individual farm owners, with good broad mining rights, and in 98% or more of its title has a complete waiver of surface damage or the right to subside the surface land. In the early days of our Company, individual coal farms were purchased from land owners. Many of these titles severed the coal estate from the in fee title and good mining rights with waiver of surface were conveyed in the original severance deed. Thus, minable coal reserves were put together by the purchase of the coal under many individual farms in an area. In the early years, the mines practiced hand dug mining - later going to mechanical cutting with hand loading of the coal. Systems used were entry driving with room and rib panels. We have practiced full recovery mining as far as practical during the years of hand loading, as well as in the later years when the mines were mechanized. Mining system layouts, methods and procedures have changed from time to time to keep pace with improved mining machinery and new inovations, such as roof bolting and rubber tired haulage.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. The sequence of events which results in the formation of Porphyry deposits (Figure 1) can be summarized as the result of collision of crustal plates, subduction of the oceanic plate, emplacement of a serpentine ultrabasic diapir, formation of a dioritic magma at depths of 300 to 500 km, rise of the magma to a sub crustal or intra-crustal chamber, eruption of andesitic volcanoes, emplacement of diorite or differentiation of the magma into more acidic products, multiple intrusion of hypabyssal rocks and hydro-

This paper describes the development of a modified Goodman Jack method for determining the mechanical properties of rock masses in situ. The modified method consists of the basic borehole loading device and a friction-strain-gauge measuring module. The friction gauges, located in the central portion of the jack, are impressed on opposite quadrants of the borehole walls and the remaining quadrants are loaded by the borehole jack with a uniaxial self-equilibrating pair of forces. The tangential strains generated at the borehole walls are thus measured concurrently with the loading. For ideal elastic materials, the tangential stresses at any point on the borehole walls due to jack loading can be obtained from closed-form analytical solutions utilizing the complex variable method. Complete stress-strain curves for the rock material can then be directly obtained from the tangential strain measurements and the calculated tangential stresses at those points. The continuous data are considerably more significant and reliable than averaged or point data obtainable by other current in situ measuring techniques. Moreover, the advantages inherent to the original Goodman Jack method are also obtainable in the modified method. The suitability of the new method was demonstrated by carrying out a number of laboratory measurements in large specimens of reinforced concrete, aluminum and granite blocks. The results of actual field measurements carried out in sandstone and granite quarries were found comparable with those obtained in the laboratory.
