The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

It is probably safe to assume that most operating personnel working in coal preparation plants are exposed to noise levels in excess of the MESA Noise Regulations unless they are wearing ear protection. The excessive in-plant noise levels have received little attention until recently. Noise control has not been an important design consideration in existing coal preparation plants. This situation is rapidly changing as plant owners and plant operators are requiring that new coal preparation plants be designed to provide a safe noise environment for operating personnel and also meet MESA Noise Regulations. This paper discusses the noise exposure hazards, noise generating mechanisms, and some possible noise control solutions for typical coal preparation plants.

Pipeline or borehole free-fall transfer of material has long been done in support of underground mining. This paper addresses some characteristics and design elements in selecting systems suitable to the transferred media and the mine requirements. Though aspects of overall systems are discussed, principal attention is directed to the slickline/dropline/transfer line and the discharge diverter/rockbox/energy dissipator/boot. These terms are common to these systems, often used interchangeably, and will be used as appropriate to the material, equipment and construction. Following several design sections, fabrication and construction, and system operating and maintenance procedures are discussed.

A new prototype ionization-attachment fire detector was developed by the Bureau of Mines for detecting combustion-generated submicrometer particulates. It is much more sensitive than the conventional ionization smoke detector, and it has the following added features: 1. A primary charging current of unipolar air ions is generated by a gold-coated, radioactive center electrode of a cylindrical diode. 2. Submicrometer particulates are flowed axially through the unipolar cloud where they acquire charge. The charged particles impinge upon a third electrode, located downstream, resulting in a current which is directly proportional to the particulate concentration. 3. Additional electrodes analyze the particulates in terms of their mobility and thus determine their size distribution. 4. A filter and cyclone assembly protect the ionization chamber against ambient dust. An analysis of conventional ionization smoke detector performance is also presented in terms of source strength, chamber geometry, and applied potential.

Low-grade iron ore received from the West Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state in India was used to develop a beneficiation flow sheet to remove alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2 ) from the ore to get iron (Fe)-rich product for steel plants. Mineral characterization showed that the main mineral constituents present in the head sample are goethite, limonite, hematite, quartz, clay and gibbsite. The head sample contained about 49.2 percent Fe, 8.79 percent alumina and 12.01 percent silica. The received iron ore sample is amenable to upgradation through beneficiation to get pellet grade concentrate. The beneficiation process was established, involving crushing, screening, jigging, spiral separation, size reduction, desliming and magnetic separation. The process showed significant enrichment in Fe values to 63.5 percent Fe in concentrate, from 49.2 percent Fe. From the developed flow sheet, it is possible to obtain pellet grade fines with 63.5 percent Fe, 2.92 percent SiO2 and 2.61 percent Al2O3 with 50.6 percent weight recovery. The overall tailing loss is 49.4 percent with 34.3 percent Fe, 21.28 percent SiO2 and 14.64 percent Al2O3

PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON announced at midyear that the test flight of the A-It plane, the world's first super-sonic aircraft capable of flying 2,000 miles per hour, was made possible by "the mastery of the metallurgy 'and fabrication of titanium." Not all of the contributions made by the mineral industry in 1964 were acknowledged so widely. Yet the contributions were significant as the search continued for new and improved methods for providing metals and mineral products to meet the ever-expanding requirements of the world economy. This chapter reviews only a few of the metallurgical developments that resulted from U.S. and foreign research efforts. MINERAL BENEFICIATION Up-to-date theory 'and practice in the mineral ,Processing field in 1963 involved subjects such as autogenous grinding, high-intensity magnetic separation, and mill control by computers. These subjects were fully discussed at the Seventh International Minerals Processing Congress held in New York City during September.

Turkey is the fifth biggest ceramic tile exporter in the world. Considering the expectation that the Turkish tile sector continues to expand, further studies both on the improvement and the development of tile formulations are necessary in order to make the producers advantaged in the world market while maintaining the capital and running costs at reasonably competitive levels as well. In addition to such studies, waste management in tile manufacturing has also recently become an important issue. Accordingly, the industrial use of wastes in the traditional ceramic industry has been intensively investigated in the recent years. This work describes part of a detailed research project carried out jointly on the possible re-use of muds (raw production waste) from glazing and pressing lines of a local tile company in the development of new wall and floor tile formulations. In order to achieve this, the waste material was firstly investigated in function of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Then, the particular focus was given to the presence of the waste material in increasing amounts on the thermal behaviour and physico-mechanical properties of the re-formulated tile bodies. During the studies, SEM in combination with EDS, and thermal analysis techniques such as non-contact dilatometry were widely employed. The results indicated that it was possible to use the waste materials in the commercial tile production without deteriorating the relevant technological properties.

"Load transfer distance (LTD) is simple in concept and usually evident in underground coal mines. Many people in the mining industry recognize LTD as the distance from the panel to where the mine ribs and pillars show evidence of renewed spalling, floor heave, or other effects of increased weight due to longwall mining or pillaring. Barrier pillars, in particular, are designed to shield mains and other relatively permanent facilities from this loading. LTD is also important in determining the extent and degree to which mining increases the load on pillars and ribs in the gate roads. Generally, a long LTD reduces loads in gate roads, but may require larger barrier pillar widths to protect mains or adjacent panels from excessive loads. Therefore, a long LTD may make it easy or difficult to meet various objectives of mine layout design . LTD reflects overburden geology in two ways: First, overburden that is weak and readily caves will limit both the amount and distance of load transfer. Second, stronger, stiffer, sandier, and more massive overburden increases both the amount and distance of load transfer. As such, LTD is central to coal mine layout design and calibration of numerical models that seek to anticipate these transfers of load during mining. However, the term does not have a consistent definition in the literature, and various instruments and observational techniques with varying sensitivities and thresholds have been used to indicate the onset of mining-induced stress increase and, subsequently, to determine an LTD. Consistency is important for meaningful comparison of ground response between mining sites and for accurate calibration of models.This paper adds to the body of observed and reported LTDs by presenting cases with relatively sandy and massive overburden at two western coal mines. These two cases include observation and measurement of LTD with multiple methods and provide insight into how distances reported relative to different criteria and instrumentation could be adjusted for comparison against a common base. This base is the criteria used by Peng and Chiang (1984) to determine their empirical equation. In one of these two cases, LTD was recently measured at a western U.S. coal mine (Mine A) to be approximately four times that calculated using the Peng and Chiang empirical equation. LTD measurements were examined using various instruments at Mine A and at adjacent Mine B. The measurements at Mine B showed that LTD was significantly greater than that calculated by the Peng and Chiang equation. Difficulties with BPC installation and fittings at Mine B permitted only ranges of LTD to be determined from some BPCs. Even so, the LTDs and ranges of LTDs determined were consistent with the LTDs determined at Mine A."

In the mineral industry, the objective of a mining venture is to extract, process, and market a mineral commodity in such a manner that the profit of the venture is maximized. In a mining venture, a company normally has control over mine production scheduling, the selection and location of processing facilities (mineral beneficiation plants, smelting plants, refineries, or blending facilities), processed ore blending, and the selection of markets. The flexibility of the above factors provides many alternatives to satisfy the needs of each market with regard to quantity and quality of ore. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model for determining the alternative that yields the maximum profit. Production planning is generally concerned with the best utilization of fixed resources, more specifically, with the determination of production and inventory levels to meet fluctuating demand requirements. A mine can be any source of ore such as an entire mine, a production unit within a mine, or an independent supplier. The objective of production scheduling is to determine the times at which each mine will be used and to allocate a required level of production. Production planning and scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of new and existing mines and processing facilities. Although the location of the mines is usually fixed, there can be considerable flexibility in locating new processing facilities, in the selection of the processing plant, and in blending the ore before and after processing.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

Southeast Asian countries cannot maintain their economic growth rate without the development of their mining industries. To make this development as sustainable as possible requires sound fundamentals securing not only economic progress and environment protection but also improvements in occupational safety and health (OSH) for the miners. Mining in South East Asia is still very labor intense and dangerous. Tremendous achievements from world class mining operations in advanced mining countries can be used as role models to improve the status quo of the Southeast Asian countries in OSH management. Know-how transfer, therefore, is a key factor for major improvements. Effects of this transfer based on a multi-level approach will be discussed based on a case study. It describes the transfer from German to Vietnamese hard coal mining industry. Crucial requisites for excellent achievements in OSH in Southeast Asian mining countries are also mentioned.

INTRODUCTION The Bullmoose Coal Project is part of a major development in northeastern British Columbia which comprises a new rail line, a new townsite, powerline, highway, the upgrading of the Canadian National Railway's main line, a new coal port at Prince Rupert and two new coal mines, the Bullmoose mine and the Quintette mine. The total investment by all parties is estimated to be in excess of $2.6 billion and made up approximately as follows : [Table No. 1 $ Millions - Quintette Coal Limited 950 Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc. 275 Canadian National Railway Company 800 6 British Columbia Railway Company Port at Prince Rupert 280 Townsite, Roads 6- Power ] The new infrastructure is intended to serve not only the Bullmoose and Quintette coal projects but also eventually a number of other coal properties in northeastern British Columbia. The Bullmoose project is structured on a joint venture basis as follows : [Table No. 2 Teck Corporation 51% Lornex Mining Corporation Ltd. 39% Nissho Iwai Coal Development 1 0% (Canada) Ltd. -- 100% ] The mine has a capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of clean coal per year. In the initial years 1.7 million tonnes will be metallurgical coal and 0.6 million tonnes thermal coal. After the first three years of operations the annual production of metallurgical coal will increase to an average of approximately 2.1 million tonnes and the production of thermal coal will decrease to an average of approximately 0.2 million tonnes. At this level of 2.3 million tonnes annual production, the Bullmoose mine has sufficient reserves for at least 26 years of production. History Brameda Resources Ltd. commenced coal exploration in the Bullmoose-Sukunka area in 1969. Teck obtained an option on the Bullmoose coal licences in 1970 and started surface exploration and diamond drilling in 1971. Teck earned a 50% interest in the property, and thereafter expenses were jointly financed by Teck and Brameda. In 1981 Brameda merged with Teck making Teck the sole owner. The initial phase of the exploration program, which was completed in 1975, included 7,200 meters of diamond drilling in 35 holes. During 1976 and 1977, detailed exploration and test work were carried out on the South Fork and West Fork areas where multiple seams close to surfaces indicated the potential for large tonnages of strippable coal. In those two years, work included road construction, detailed mapping and trenching to outline the coal seam traces at the surface, 6,300 meters of diamond drilling in 80 holes, and 300 meters of underground bulk sampling from seven adits. Washability tests and analysis work were carried out on the drill cores and adit samples, and pilot plant washability studies were undertaken. In 1978 and 1979 Teck engineers prepared open pit mining plans and production schedules and Kaiser Engineering was retained to prepare a layout of the plant preparation facility. A feasibility study prepared by Teck's engineering group in January 1982 was the base document used by the Lenders in assessing the technical and economic viability of the project. Property Location The property lies some 650 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, and 87 kilometers south by road from the village of Chetwynd. The Sukunka property (British Petroleum) adjoins to the north, the Mount Spieker property (Ranger Oil Option) adjoins to the east, and the Quintette property is located to the southeast.

The change in shape of the void in a sirzterir~g copper mass has been investigated as a juntction of' density. A serial sectioning' technique was used to eoaltrate the irregular shape of the void at two levels qf density. A measure of the void size and configuration, the proximity number, is defined and used to describe the progress of void removal. The process of. void removal deduced front the observations of this study contrasts with current sintering models in that it takes into account the irregularity of structure of a sintering mass and demonstrates that isolated Porosity does not occur first as spherical pores, but as large, definitely nonspherical sections of the void void volume. The process of sintering, about which there is much practical and theoretical knowledge, has evaded a direct and thorough analysis despite the intensity with which it has been studied for 60 years or so. This is due, of course, to the complex structure of a sintering mass and the inability to observe directly the development of a fully dense solid from the initial particulate arrangement. Extensive theoretical analyses have been based on the adoption of one or another of several model systems, that is, by visualization and analysis of some sort of regular assembly or arrangement of geometric "particles" approximating the conditions of a sintering mass. It seems appropriate at this time to try to examine experimentally in some detail the extent to which a sintering mass of irregular particles dlffers from these models. Many models deal with neck growth and the initial stage of sintering and follow the direction established by ~ucz~nski' in 1949 for the sintering of spheres to flat plates. Recently Johnson and cutler2 have adapted these models to sintering of powder masses. coble3 has presented a mathematical model for sintering that applies to the middle and final stages of the process. These papers, without exception, assume a regular geometry, generally spheres in contact in a regular array. Rhines~ and coworkers, however, are studying the sintering process by applying a model based on the topological concept of genus which permits them to consider an irregular structure. whites has described the various models with the exception of that of Rhines et al., and the assumptions on which they are based and their shortcomings. The present paper examines the geometric changes that occur in the powder mass during sintering by examination of the void. The method is to analyze a series of partially sintered structures and to propose from this analysis the sequence of events which occur in the removal of the void space as a sintering mass progresses from a collection of individual particles to a solid body. The irregular nature of the stacking of particles and of the particles themselves will be taken into account. The significant points derived from this study are: first, accurate reconstructions of the irregular void shapes are presented; second, it is clearly established that closed porosity occurs first as widespread volumes of interconnected porosity, definitely nonspherical in shape; and third, a new factor, the proximity number, is defined, which serves in this paper as a tool for describing the void shape changes observed, and which will be used in a later paper as part of the basis of a mathematical model for sintering. While the specific material studied is copper, the observations are thought to be relatively general as indicated by comparison of the results with partially sintered structures in other materials presented in the literature, both metallic and nonmetallic. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four series of specimens representing progressive stages of the sintering process were prepared by sintering high-purity copper powder for various time periods. A relatively large particle size was used so that the void-solid interface could be readily distinguished at low magnification. In three series of specimens a loose stacking of particles was obtained by pouring powder into an alumina mold and lightly tapping the mold. The green density of such compacts was approximately 40 pct of theoretical density. Two of these three series utilized irregularly shaped particles in the size range -230 +325 mesh, one series sintered in vacuum and one in hydrogen at 950°C. The third series of loosely stacked particles consisted of spherical particles in the size range -270 +325 mesh, sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. A fourth series was prepared from compacted irregular particles sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. The specimens for this series were formed by lightly pressing the irregularly shaped particles in a steel die; the green density of the pressed pellets was approximately 60 pct. The irregularly shaped particles used in this study are shown in Fig. 1. The density of these particles, measured by a toluene picnometer technique, is 98.2 pct of theoretical density. Each particle is highly convoluted, and in some instances appears in cross section to contain internal porosity. The density measurement, however, indicates that completely enclosed porosity is very small so that the individual particles have a highly irregular surface but are essentially fully dense copper. Therefore, most of the void space that appears in two dimensions to be isolated within the particle is actually at the particle surface and connected to the external void in the dimension not included in the plane of the cross section. This report describes methods of using sodium for reducing titanic chloride, developed as part of Bureau of Mines activities at Boulder City, Nev., to improve the extractive metallurgy of titanium. Theoretical indications pertaining to the major chemical reactions and possible side reactions of the process are compared with experimental observations. Low-temperature reduction equipment is described, in which titanic chloride was reduced with sodium at temperatures between 97.5° C., the melting point of sodium, and 200° C. Techniques employed in making reductions in ball-mill and high-surface sodium reactors are given.

The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The start up operations of Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie nickel smelter encountered troubles due to the high magnesia content of the concentrates. The flash smelter slags, with higher than normal magnesia content, had a much higher melting point than the normal low-magnesia, predominantly fayalite slags usually produced in nickel smelting. Investigations were made of the structures, melting points and viscosities of the Kalgoorlie smelter slags, as produced, and with additions of silica or lime.
