"About two years ago the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, and the University of Idaho undertook an investigation of classification in its relation to table concentration of Idaho ores. The cooperation of the management of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. in placing at our disposal their West Mill and facilities as desired, offered an unusual opportunity for studying the field of hindered classification in its practical and economic relation to table concentration.It has been shorn theoretically, and demonstrated experimentally, that ore products are more easily and economically concentrated on tables if the natural feed, consisting of various minerals and of all sizes of particles of each mineral, be classified or grouped into a series of products in which the mineral particles of greatest density are small in diameter relative to the diameter of the mineral particles of lesser density. Products in which the maximum difference in diameter of light and heavy minerals occurs are to be obtained only by true hindered settling classification. To our knowledge there has never been a really good hindered settling classifier used in practice and the present tendency seems to be to by-pass any attempt at such classification.After a careful study of the nature of hindered classification and of the requirements for hindered settling in practice, a classifier has been developed that takes fullest practical advantage of the widely known, but generally only meagerly understood, condition of hindered settling so well analyzed a number of years ago by Dr. Richards.The present paper presents briefly some of the more important practical results accruing through the investigation."

PJV Dome Mine has used some form of gravity concentration since start of milling operation in 1909 to recover free milling gold. Amalgamation and conventional jigs were first used and were replaced with the Knelson Concentrators in 1993. The Knelson concentrates produced were upgraded on a conventional shaking table prior to smelting and refining into gold bullion. In May 2002, a comprehensive review of the latest gravity recovery technology led to a piloting campaign aimed at further improving gravity recovery. The Knelson concentrates, subjected to intensive cyanide leaching in an Acacia pilot plant, were found to be amenable to intensive cyanide leaching with over 98% of the gold being dissolved within 24 hours. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was successfully installed and commissioned in December 2002, to replace the shaking table. his paper describes pilot scale testing, installation, commissioning and optimization of the Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor. Also, the economic impacts on down stream processes are highlighted.

Twenty-eight samples, representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Kittanning, Stockton-Lewiston, Coalburg, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Peerless, No. 2 Gas, Powellton, and Eagle beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines--American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Expanding characteristics of 22 of the samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. The Kanawha County coals tested were high-volatile A bituminous in rank, with dry, mineral-matter- free fixed- carbon contents ranging from 53.9 to 66.3 percent. With few exceptions, they were chemically satisfactory for metallurgical use, and most of the coke-strength indexes were within the industrially accepted range for high-volatile blending coals.

In recent years the Australian gold industry has gone through a major expansion phase. The need for finance has led to adoption of different approaches such as the well known gold loan, forward selling, equity participation by suppliers and equipment leasing. During early periods of the expansion, significant new equity was raised chiefly for high risk exploration ventures. The major form of new equity finance was ordinary shares, often in 'No Liability' companies. The increasing capital requirement of the huge new development projects of the 1980s also spurred the use of debt finance. This trend was accelerated as high inflation and the taxation advantages of debt finance made borrowing attractive. This paper reviews major financing techniques used by the Australian gold industry with particular emphasis on the innovative financing techniques initiated recently. An analysis has been undertaken of the effects on the industry of issues such gold loans, forward selling, equity participation by suppliers, fly-in fly-out operations, contractor mining and equipment leasing. In order to achieve a better understanding of the innovative financing techniques, a survey of already published financial data from well known Australian gold mines was carried out. Data was collected from various published financial reports of gold mining companies. In addition, a questionnaire survey was sent to gold mining companies to assist the collection of further information. The results of this study show that there are a significant number of gold mines variously using gold loans, forward sales, contractor mining and fly-in and fly-out arrangements to finance their projects. Only four operations have vendor suppliers investing capital funds in their projects. Based on the findings of this study, conclusions and recommendations are drawn that these approaches are likely to be with Australian gold industry for some time in the future and will continue to be intensively applied to finance gold projects.

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

Application of a constant geometry compression test to single crystals of aluminum of selected diameters from 1/4 to 1/64 in. showed the presence of a diameter-dependmt size effect. The most pronounced effects were found in those crystals oriented for single slip, while for specimens possessing orientations in the comers of the standard stereographic triangle virtually no size effect was exhibited. The yield stress of the crystals oriented for single slip was found to increase with decrease in specimen diameter, while the strain-hardening rate was found to be lower for the smaller specimens. The experimental results are in general agreement with those of other investigators obtained from lensile tests on copper and aluminum crystals. THE earliest systematic investigation of a possible size effect on the plasticity of metals was that of no,' who in 1926 performed tensile tests on cylindrical aluminum single crystals with diameters of 3 to 8 mm. Ono concluded that the gross stress-strain curve did not show a diameter dependence, but that the resistance to slip for strains of 0.1 pet and less appeared higher for 3-mm-diam crystals than for larger sizes. Later studies of aluminum by Maddin et al2 tentatively concluded that a size effect exists, but the conclusions were again open to question because of inconsistencies in the experimental data. Wu and Smoluchowski3 had previously shown that the slip system activated in a single-crystal sheet specimen of aluminum is a function of the specimen cross section in the slip direction, but no stress-strain data were obtained. Subsequently Fleischer and Chalmers4 studied the effect of the length of the slip direction of the primary-slip system on the stress-strain curve by testing aluminum crystals with geometrically dissimilar cross sections. In the course of this investigation a size effect was indicated in rather large crystals; however, the number of these tests was small. Other investigators have indicated that a size effect in aluminum is appreciable only for diameters of 0.5 mm or less.5, 6 Size-effect studies have also been carried out on copper crystals, the most detailed being that of Suzuki et a1.7 who performed tensile tests on specimens of many diameters ranging from 2 to 0.12 mm. Suzuki found a strong size dependence in the easy-glide region, both the extent of the easy glide and the hardening rate in easy glide were size-dependent, and the size effect was found to be orientation-dependent. Suzuki's results are in agreement with the less extensive observations of Pater-sonB and those of Garstone et al.9 A size effect was found by Rebstock using tubular copper crystals.'0 Size effects have also been noted in a brass,6, 11 in cadmium,12'19 and in hexagonal crystals.14 All the previously cited works have been entirely concerned with the variation of specimen cross section. The effects of specimen length and the change of specimen geometry which results from using progressively thinner specimens while maintaining the same specimen length have been largely ignored. A theoretical discussion of the effects of specimen length and geometry has been given by Hauser and Jackson,15 who predict a grip effect on easy glide as a function of specimen geometry provided that the specimen dimensions are large compared with the spacing between the slip bands, and by Fleischer and Chalmers,18 whose analysis of grip effects resulting from lattice rotation predicts an increase in easy glide with an increase in specimen length. A study of size and geometry effects in aluminum crystals by Kitajima and shimba17 indicated increasing amounts of easy glide in specimens of increasing length and identical cross section, and nearly identical stress-strain curves for specimens of different sizes having constant length-to-diameter ratios. Since the present study is primarily concerned with diameter dependence, the following factors were taken into account: specimen material, specimen geometry, testing method, range of sizes to be tested, and possible influence of surface and volume effects. THE realization by metallurgists of the important effect that traces of impurity may have upon the properties of a metal, and their steady demand for purer and still purer metals, have made the special cools for 'trace' analysis of increasing value. In the United States at least, spectrographic analysis is becoming the standard method for determining the impurities in zinc die-casting alloys. The Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, as a producer of virtually pure zinc, uses the spectrograph to control the purity of its products, and-as the electrolytic method is employed here-to control both the impurities in the electrolyte and those 'trace' elements, which, while they do not contaminate the zinc, have a great effect on the plating efficiency. The general plan of the laboratory is shown in Figure l; the housing for air purification, which is on the roof, is indicated by broken lines. One of the chief factors affecting the layout was the easy way in which a spectrographic assay can be spoiled by contamination. To minimize the quantity of dust tracked in, the laboratory was made separate from the general research laboratories, and an office was placed between the two. This arrangement has its drawback because of the traffic through the office, but it has effectively cut down dust. For similar reasons, the available space was subdivided into a number of small rooms, and the air currents in the laboratory were so arranged that dust would be carried where it would do least harm. Air is drawn in at the roof over a 50-kilowatt bank of Calrod heaters, through Annis air filters, by a No. 4 Sirocco fan. Most of it is forced into the spectrograph room, but some goes to the office and darkroom. The air flow is from the spectrograph room, through the plate-measuring room, into the chemical laboratory, where it is exhausted by a No. 1% Sirocco fan on the fume hood. Air can also re-circulate from the plate-measuring room back to the heater. The arrangement is such that the air in the laboratory is maintained at higher pressure than the outside air; consequently, no dirt enters through cracks about the windows and doors. A thermo-regulator holds the temperature constant within one or two degrees; only on the hottest days in summer does the temperature rise enough to affect the focus of the instrument.

These samples were collected during calendar year 1961 as part of the continuous survey for the occurrence of helium in natural gas conducted by the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines. The analyses herein were made by mass spectrometer and Frost helium apparatus. The most important helium resource discovery made during 1961 was the Table Mesa field in San Juan County, N. Mex. This field, Which has an estimated recoverable helium reserve of 850 million cubic feet, is now supplying gas containing approximately 5.4 percent helium to the Bureau of Mines Navajo Helium Plant at Shiprock, N. Mex.

It is paramount that the stability of rock slopes be correctly accounted for under diverse operating and environmental conditions. Owing to different sources of uncertainty entailed in such stability problems, conventional deterministic approach through the calculation of a factor of safety (FOS) cannot reflect quantified uncertainties explicitly and sufficiently. Thus it is highly desirable to invoke the reliability approach to consider uncertainties in a systematic manner. Nowadays, the current design standards have an increasing tendency to ensure rock slope stability by pre-defining a target reliability index (or target probability of failure), viz., the reliability level of a rock slope is pre-set as a target to be satisfied. In such a situation and considering the fact that the FOS used as an indicator of slope performance still has a very wide acceptance, we focus on proposing an inverse-reliability-based methodology which aims at developing a two-fold indicator strategy, i.e., using the FOS and reliability together to deal with slope stability problems. The basic idea behind it is to utilize a so-called inverse first-order reliability method (IFORM) to directly calibrate the FOS provided the target reliability index has been given. In this way, the calibration scheme relating the FOS can be rationally done by not only incorporating uncertainties, but also satisfying a desired level of the prescribed reliability. Based on this, to make the IFORM computationally feasible and also reduce its computational cost, we introduce the response surface method (RSM) to generate a surrogate for the FOS-based limit state function (LSF), considering the lengthy and complicated form of the FOS in some recognized methods (e.g., within the framework of limit equilibrium). Distinguished from the existing RSMs that potential inadequacies may arise, we present an RSM based on a hybrid approach combining support vector machine (SVM; used as a regression technique) and uniform design (UD; pertaining to experimental design). Using a representative example of rock slope stability problem, we demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the developed methodology, during which the associated sensitivity study and further discussion are also performed. By dint of such a methodology, we can establish a link between the conventional deterministic approach and the reliability approach, where a logical and realistic framework is provided, for cases achieving the specified reliability, to assist in selecting the FOS which remains adequate for rock slope stability even in the face of uncertainty.

An essential requirement of product quality control in the mining industry is to be able to reliably predict key quality properties of finished product from the data available before the extraction of the ore. From a production viewpoint, the unit of data collection is generally the input and output data set for each shift of crusher production, but could be any period where mine precrusher data can be reliably matched with product data.This paper demonstrates that linear regression models can be used to predict crush grades from blast grades, even where the crush material is blended from multiple sources or pits for each of which differing regression models might apply. The advantage of using increasingly complex regressions models to match the available data to give increasingly more powerful models is examined. The best model for any application will be a balance between required predictability, available data and the business’ tolerance for complex models.The regression modelling approach has several advantages over the more classic method of run-of-mine (ROM) crusher trials, which will be discussed.The models can use any predictor variable such as grade, geotype and in situ density provided the preextraction data set can be reliably matched with post-crusher data and is significant as a predictor. The models have been used extensively in the generation of the daily crusher plan with the aim of maintaining finished product grade. This approach has also been used associated with exploration drilling and long-term planning.It is acknowledged that there are inherent problems in fitting lump and fines grade to a linear model. However, these problems are minor when they are used for interpolation within the window spanned by the shift blend records used to produce the model. This paper discusses some of the issues limiting linear regression models in this application, and suggests methods enabling consistent models to be formulated

By the micronization-milling of the material, the size and the structure of its particles are changed and it comes to the increasing of the potential energy of the system as well as to the chem-ical activity of the material what is the result of an increased free surface and of the concentration of the grate defects, that is of the internal energy of the system. All these changes that are reached, show that new characteristics of treated materials are got by micronization process. Controlling the process of the micronization and by purpose directing of the new characteristics of the activated materials, we can have the positive effects and use them in more technologies. Talc is important nonmetallic mineral raw material that is widely used as either the basic raw material, or as filler. This has stimulated its technological investigation, as well as the investigation of its physical-chemical characteristics. In this paper are shown experimentally reached results of the physical-chemical characteristics of the talc during the process of the micronization in high energetic mill. In this paper, the optimum conditions of miconization of talc in high-energy-speed rotary mill and its influence micronization on a degree of Fe2O3recovery by hydrometallurgical methodes, are presented. The X-ray analysis of the obtained products showed that high quality talc with low content of can be obtained by these physical-chemical processes In this paper, the principles and application or fine and ultra-fine grinding high-energy attriton mill with small balls, enabling fast, efficient grinding, low energy consumption, short grinding time and easy handling will be described.

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines received a 100-pound sample of manganese ore from the Doyle-Smith property, Yuma County, Ariz. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of this ore to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce a marketable-grade product. The Doyle-Smith claims are in northern Yuma County, within 15 miles of the Artillery Peak deposit. The lot of ore used in the test work was taken from the outcrop of a large, massive, irregular bed of oxide manganese ore found on the claims.

This paper, describing the concentrator of the Molybdenum Corporation of America in Taos County, northern New Mexico. 7 miles east of Questa, is one of a series on milling methods being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The mine from which the ore comes is 1 1/4 miles from the mill, and produces about 40 tons of ore per day by the cut-and-fill method.3 The ore contains about 5 per cent of MoS2. The mill has a capacity of 50 tons of ore per day and utilizes flotation methods. Water is taken from Red River. Power is generated by a water wheel, or by a Diesel engine in times of water shortage during the winter. The mill is located close to the bottom of a canyon, in order to obtain maximum head or, the water wheel, and the flow of ore is therefore maintained partly by gravity and partly by an elevator and pumps. ORE TREATED The MoS2 content of the concentrator feed ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 biotite, fluorite, small amounts of rhodochrosite and calcite, and the minerals of the granodiorite country rock.

The mine is a large open-pit copper mine located near Tucson, AZ. Mining operations involve shovels digging at relatively fixed locations and haul trucks moving the muck to a primary ore crusher, a primary waste crusher, and directly to waste dumps. The total investment in shovels and trucks is some $100 million. Fig. l is a schematic drawing of the operation. A static method of truck assignment is used; i.e., each driver is given one particular shovel to serve until reassigned by the dispatcher. A dynamic system is one where trucks are reassigned after each trip. The problem is to compute a near optimum assignment of trucks for efficient operation.

  Underground positioning and communication are essential technologies for the future of underground mining operations. In contrast to other positioning and communication technologies such as wireless local area network (WLAN) or radio frequency identification (RFID), ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology provides significant benefits like accurate and robust positioning of mobile machine equipment, which is indispensable for future autonomous systems in underground mining processes, such as production, transportation and auxiliary operations. Among these technologies, UWB offers many advantages, including higher accuracy, robustness, resistance against noise and multipath effects, and low power consumption [1,2]. Underground automation and localization systems benefit from these advantages and use the technology to improve efficiency and safety. There are many studies being carried out on this technology to increase the results’ accuracy, energy sufficiency and more. Two robust UWB modules that were developed for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations are introduced. The measurement results of tests carried out in an underground mine are discussed as well to confirm the functionality of the system.

The natural marine environment can be divided into four basic categories: the air-sea interface, the water zone, the seafloor, and the subbottom. Efforts are being made to accumulate data to delineate the conditions in each of these areas and to conduct engineering studies which will determine how these environmental parameters affect the mining process. Laboratory facilities have been constructed and equipment and techniques for scientific data collection and laboratory research have been developed. Major emphasis is being placed on studying the subbottom material. The objective of this emphasis is to study the engineering properties of marine placer deposits in order to assess their influence on the design and performance of the various mining subsystems involving penetration, excavation, transportation, and disposal. Presented are the results of engineering properties tests on a placer simulant which is currently being used for model and prototype testing of coring tools. The effect of these engineering properties on penetrability, core recovery, and sample recovery is discussed.

O objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver uma metodologia para aprovação de tubos com alta resistência a colapso de acordo com os requisitos da norma internacional API5CT grau N80, produzidos por tratamento térmico de tempera e revenimento, utilizando fornos de indução em tubos fabricados pelo processo de soldagem com resistência elétrica em alta frequência (ERW/HFIW). Neste trabalho são exploradas as principais propriedades mecânicas e dimensionais de um tubo de revestimento com diâmetro externo de 177,8 mm e parede 8,05 mm grau N80 processado para atingir alta resistência a colapso, onde serão apresentados os resultados do processo de qualificação para validação de sua produção em série.

The trend in both the metallic and non-metallic mining industry is toward processing increasing y higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to establish the configuration of a 1000 cu ft (2B.3 cu m) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

The stable domestic supply of gallium, indium, and germanium has been identified as a critical need for the USA. Electric arc furnace dusts processed to recover zinc produce a process residue that could be a potential source of these critical materials. An industrial zinc leach residue was characterized to determine the predominant mineral phases and leached with common mineral acids. Atmospheric agitated leaching using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid were examined to determine the extractions of gallium, indium, and germanium as a function of concentration, temperature, and time. Extractions of gallium were found to be similar to iron in all experiments. The maximum percentage of Ga, Ge, and In leached into solution were 82%, ~100%, and 89%, respectively.
