The report described improvements and applications of the Hybrid Computer facility. Improvements implemented under U.S.B.M. Contract H0252035 included expansion of the capability to model nonlinear seam behavior, installation of a color video output display monitor, and further development of software capabilities. To demonstrate the capability of the system, firstly, the influence of nonlinear seam behavior response to the occurrence of coal mine bumps was fully investigated and secondly, the effect of improper mining sequence on bump occurrence was demonstrated. In addition, the system was applied to the analysis of a series of practical coal mine problems. Mines in three coal seams were analysed to investigate the parameters which contribute to the occurrence of coal mine bumps.

This paper discusses the design of small head frames that will fill the needs of prospectors and small operators whose operations are conducted through shafts. The head frames considered were designed to handle relatively small tonnages. It was assumed that the shafts in which buckets are used would not exceed 300 feet in depth and that not over 60 tons of rock would be hoisted, in, 14 hours. In the design of the larger head frames, a hoisting capacity of about 250 tons per 6 hours from a depth of 300 to 500 feet was assumed. Under these conditions, hoisting speed, rate of acceleration, and weight of rope have a negligible effect on the head frame design and, therefore, have been ignored in the following, discussion. Because timber is relatively cheap and easily obtained in most mining areas, the discussion has been confined to timber construction.

The heavy liquid separation (HLS) process was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to develop a means of concentrating minerals from natural ores, Various spodumene ores were tested in a 0.4-inch diameter cyclone using pure tetrabromoethane (TBE) as the heavy liquid. Studies were initiated to examine the influence of (1) pulp density (2) feed grade, (3) cyclone pressure, (4) cyclone apex opening size) (5) cyclone vortex finder opening sand (6) mineral particle size on the separation efficiency. Each of these factors was found to affect the heavy liquid separation in some degree; the mineral particle size exhibited the greatest effect and the ore feed grade the least. Conditions necessary to yield an 85 percent spodumene concentrate with an 85 percent recovery were determined to be: 70 psig pressure, 10 percent solids, 0.08-inch apex opening, 0.11-inch vortex finder opening and a minimum amount of minus 200-mesh fines in the feed. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying over 90 percent and indicated mineral recoveries exceed-in 90 percent.

The coal seam in the southern coal field of the Ordos Basin serves as the main aquifer, while the region is known for its high-intensity coal mining activities. The coupling effect of mine water and the strong disturbance caused by high-intensity mining have brought serious challenges to the stability of coal pillars. To address this, a formula for determining the reasonable width of coal pillars under the aforementioned coupling effect and establish a criterion for coal pillar instability in this paper. A case study was on the 11,215 working face at the Xiaojihan coal mine in the area to investigate coal pillar stability. Results indicate that the strength and stability of the coal pillar are affected by the water content, with a small water content increasing its strength and large water content weakening it. In high-intensity exploration of watery coal seams, the best stability of the coal pillar is achieved at optimal water content and mining rates. For the Xiaojihan coal mine, the optimum water content and mining rate are 3.31% and 20 m/d, respectively, ensuring the efficient mining of watery coal seams. Furthermore, this study's findings can provide valuable references for the mining design of coal mines with similar geological conditions in the region.

Silica in the form of sand and sandstone is one of the most common, and at the same time, unique industrial minerals. Found in every rock type of every geologic age and virtually everywhere in the world, silica is used in products that touch just about every aspect of daily life. Imagine a world in the 1990s without computer chips, fiber optics, or glass, and you have just begun to understand how important silica is to the quality of life we enjoy. The elements silicon (Si) and oxygen (0) comprise roughly 60% of the earth's lithosphere to a depth of about 16 km. The crystal structure of silicon dioxide consists of one atom of silicon bonded to four surrounding atoms of oxygen to form a three-dimensional network of SiO, tetrahedra. This network makes up the mineral quartz (Murphy and Henderson, 1983), the most common detrital mineral in most sandstones. Quartz is also a major constituent of many igneous and metamorphic rocks and is widespread as a siliceous cementing agent in various rock types. Although quartz is common, sandstones, quartzites, and pegmatites and the unconsolidated sediments derived from them that have a silica content high enough and pure enough to meet today's market demands for quality and consistency are not common. USES AND SPECIFICATIONS Silica sand that is mined and processed for industrial uses must conform to the chemical and physical specifications set by customers. In the United States almost half of the silica sand produced is used in the manufacture of glass. Other important products include foundry sand, ground silica, blasting sand, and fracturing sand. Glass Sand Silica is the principal glass-forming oxide in a glass batch. Glass manufacturers develop model specifications for each source of silica sand used. These specifications broadly define the limits and ranges for chemical and physical properties of the sand and are used by the manufacturer in calculating the desired batch mix or formula. Some specifications may be critical to a glassmaker and require very stringent limits on the quantity of impurities in the sand. For example, the total iron oxide content of a batch is extremely crucial when making white or flint glasses (Mills, 1983). Iron is present in almost every raw material used in a glass batch and must be carefully controlled in order to obtain a consistent color in the finished product. It is difficult, however, for a raw material supplier to tightly control the chemistry of a naturally occurring material such as silica sand. To a great extent the commercial quality of a sand is determined by its geologic history. Realizing this, glass producers tailor their model specifications to each source of approved material. In general, a glass company is concerned most about the consistency of raw materials on a day-to-day basis. Soda-lime-silica glass was the earliest type of manmade glass (Baker-Can, 1967) and still accounts for most of the glass manufactured for commercial use today (Mills, 1983). It is relatively easy to melt and shape and is less expensive per ton to produce than most other types of glass (Baker-Can, 1967). Soda-lime-silica glass is used in fabricating containers, flat glass products, incandescent and fluorescent lamps, glass fiber, and many other products. Heavy minerals such as ilmenite, leucoxene, kyanite, and zircon are impurities on which strict limits are placed for a glass batch. Because of their refractory nature they either do not melt or only partially melt, which results in stones or feathers in finished glass. Aluminosilicates such as kyanite also contribute unwanted alumina to the batch as they partially melt. Limits are especially rigid for refractory mineral grains coarser than 0.60 to 0.425 mm (30 to 40 mesh). [Tables 1 and 2] present typical specifications for silica sand used in flat glass and container glass products. The percentages shown represent an average of many companies7 specifications.

Ligas a base de zircônio são utilizadas na indústria nuclear devido à suas boas propriedades mecânicas, baixa absorção de nêutrons e boa resistência à corrosão. No entanto, durante a operação do reator, o hidrogênio é absorvido pela liga, resultando na formação de hidretos. Para aumentar o tempo de operação desses componentes é necessário o desenvolvimento de novas ligas que retardem ou diminuam esse efeito. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a influência dos tratamentos termomecânicos no zircônio puro, através de testes que avaliem a corrosão, absorção e dessorção de hidrogênio nas condições laminada a frio e tratada termicamente. Análises de difração de raios-X indicam a existência de uma matriz Zr-a para as condições analisadas. Após a hidrogenação são formados ZrH e ZrH2. O zircônio puro encruado absorveu 1,23%p H. O zircônio puro laminado e tratado termicamente absorveu 0,85%p H. O resultado de DSC mostra que a decomposição dos hidretos ocorre em faixas de temperatura entre 318 e 368°C para a condição tratada termicamente. Para condição laminada, o resultado mostra uma transformação de fase entre 565 e 650°C. O conjunto de resultados permite concluir que a amostra tratada termicamente absorve menos hidrogênio, porém o início do processo é menor. A amostra tratada termicamente é menos resistente a corrosão e a velocidade da corrosão é menor.

The Minas-Rio industrial complex uses a pipeline with extension of 529 Km to transport the iron ore concentrate to the filtering industrial complex and exporting port. Since project phase, bench lab tests have provided important information for the pumped slurry rheology control. Based in these tests results was possible to verify the effects of slurry stability, rheology controller type and particle size distribution in the regrinded concentrate yield stress and relative viscosity. Controlling some characteristics of pumped slurry, such as particle size distribution, pH and solids concentration guaranteed to achieve the necessary rheology properties for its safe pumping through pipeline and resulted in a performance improvement over the years.

The technical paper correctly points out that the kriging variance is not a good measure of the uncertainty of the estimated (i.e., kriged) value of individual blocks. The authors claim that their proposed jack-knife method, which is a rekriging of each block by eliminating, in turn, one sample from m the original sample set and then taking the average of the rekriged estimates, not only gives good block estimates, but the resulting jackknife kriging standard deviation is a useful indicator of the "true uncertainty associated with block estimates." However, they immediately abandon the idea of using the block-by-block standard deviations, reasoning that these standard deviations are not independent and that there is no easy way to utilize them. There may be another reason for not using them. The jackknife standard deviations for individual blocks given in their example are mostly in the range of 0.004 to 0.005 oz/st (0.14 to 0.17 g/t) with only one block having a high value of 0.012 oz/st (0.41 g/ t). These individual block standard deviations are as low as the jackknife standard deviation for the mean grade of the entire shape, i.e., 0.0041 oz/st (0.14 g/t). Do they represent the "true uncertainty" .of the individual block estimates? Could the authors explain this? In a global shape consisting of a large number of blocks, any given sample will affect the kriged estimate of only those few blocks within its vicinity. This is the rationale for the authors' selective rekriging, making the jackknife algorithm more efficient. On second thought, why not do away with jackknifing altogether? Just cumulate and normalize, if necessary, the kriging weights of each sample used during the ordinary block kriging process, and then compute the global variance from these kriging weights and their respective sample grades? After all, isn't the global mean grade nothing but the weighted average of the samples used in the estimation? Reply by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester The jackknife is one of the many tools in a practitioner's toolbox to solve estimation problems. The strengths of the technique lies in its simplicity, i.e., it uses the concept of mean and standard deviation and the fact that it can be easily combined with other tools, in this case kriging. Because the jackknife kriging (JK) estimate is also the mean of the pseudovalues, the JK standard deviation is attractive just as the standard deviation of the mean explains the variability of the data. The difference is that the pseudovalue calculation in jackknife kriging uses the ordinary kriging (OK) weighting scheme instead of simple arithmetic averaging. The data used to illustrate the jackknife technique in the paper con¬sist of high values that are roughly three times the low values. The resulting JK estimate of the block grades show that the highest estimate is roughly twice the grade of the lowest estimate. The contrast between the low and the high estimate is more evident in the JK estimate than in the OK estimate, even though the mean grades of the blocks for the two estimates are very similar. Nonetheless, in this paper, we are concentrating more on the need for a more realistic measure of uncertainty, or precision, for the estimate. Unlike its OK counterpart, the JK standard deviation of the blocks clearly reflects the original data variation. The highest JK standard deviation of the blocks is three times its lowest value. This follows our intuition that, when the samples used to estimate a block is more variable, the resulting estimation variance (or standard deviation) should be higher than the case where the samples are more uniformly valued. However, block-by-block standard deviation or variance is of little practical value in reserve estimation and classification, as well as in mine planning. One is usually more interested in quantifying not the variance of the individual block estimate, but the uncertainties associated with a much larger dimension, such as the minable reserve. Thus, the thrust of the paper is to find a simple way to obtain a single estimation variance or standard deviation associated with the reserve grade estimate. The discussion by J.H. Tu did not mention how one would obtain the global variance from the OK weights and the sample grades. As a technique that offers a data value-based measure of uncertainty for its estimate, the "leave-one-out" jackknife fills this need nicely through the block kriging shortcut approach described in the paper. Note: The first column and the last two columns of Table 3 in the paper should have contained a single number each, namely, an OK estimate of 0.0317, a JK estimate of 0.0333 and a JK standard deviation of 0.0041 oz/st, respectively, for the shape, as are obvious from the text.

THE airborne geophysicist is a busy man these days. In his plane he may have the airborne magnetometer, the airborne scintillation counter, and the airborne electromagnetic surveying system. Each of these is an independent tool, but all require additional auxiliary equipment for locating the aircraft in space: recording altimeters and Shoran or aerial cameras. Now there is still another piece of equipment, the airborne magnetic gradiometer, an accessory to the magnetometer. To understand its uses, consider the function of the magnetometer itself. Aside from detecting magnetic ore, the airborne magnetometer finds greatest use in spotting intrusions of igneous material. Where there is enough contrast in magnetic susceptibility of igneous rock and adjacent formations, it outlines the intrusion. Certain minerals also influence the magnetometer directly, but with the exception of magnetite and possibly one or two others, their effect is weak and can be detected only when there is sufficient ore and the magnetometer flight passes very close to it. An igneous intrusion of infinite depth with vertical sides is represented on a magnetometer record by an anomaly, as in Fig. 1. Amplitude of the high depends on susceptibility contrast of the igneous rock. Generally speaking, the edge of the intrusion lies below the point of inflection of the curve, and this point, where the curvature changes from positive to negative on the magnetometer profile, would be near A in Fig. 1, with a counterpart, of course, on the other side. Location of the contact is one of the principal objects of the survey, but finding the precise point is not always easy, as inspection of the curve near A will show. Mineralization is often found at the contact zones, as at B. Magnetic effects, if detected, may be small, as in B', and when superimposed on the anomaly due to the instrusion they are very difficult to discern and analyze. Furthermore, if these small fluctuations are to be perceived by the magnetometer the vertical scale should be large. This increases the slopes of the anomaly and makes detection of small deviations and inflection points even more difficult. The airborne magnetic gradiometer was designed to help overcome these difficulties. What it presents is the first derivative of the magnetometer record with respect to time, that is to say, the slope at any point. Fig. 2 represents an actual magnetometer record (solid line) with the corresponding gradiometer record (dashed line) superimposed. Both records read from right to left. Vertical lines on the original magnetometer record are automatic steps designed to keep the pen from going off scale. The slope of any curve is greatest at the point of inflection or point where the curvature changes sign, and this point is a maximum (or minimum) on the gradi- ometer. The chief advantage of the gradiometer is that maxima or minima are much easier to see and to locate precisely; hence an accurate location for the point of inflection can easily be found. Note that points C and D are more sharply defined than C and D'. Similarly the small fluctuations of the original record, so important to the interpreter, are far more clearly shown at E, F, and G, than on the original record at E', F', and G'. Though not necessarily highs and lows on the gradiometer, they do show up clearly what would take a painstaking analysis to detect on the original magnetometer record. Will the gradiometer have a particular configuration which indicates an orebody? Not necessarily. The total intensity curve, or original magnetometer record, can display an orebody in various ways, depending on dimensions, orientation, latitude, and composition, as well as on direction, flight height, and instrumental sensitivity of the traverse. Where the total intensity can take on so many different shapes the gradiometer must vary too. It is generally recognized that interpretation of total intensity magnetometer records requires an expert analysis; the gradiometer can be of considerable assistance to the expert but it does not replace him. Mechanism of the gradiometer is simple. A Leeds & Northrup recorder in the aircraft records the magnetic gradient simultaneously with the total intensity, which is on another recorder. Fiducial marks are put on both records simultaneously and the speed of the paper through the recorders is kept the same on both. This makes it possible to place one record over the other for direct comparison. In the laboratory the flights are positioned on a map. Maximum and minimum points on the gradiometer, which can then be posted on the map at their proper locations, may be expected to fall along a trend crossing the direction of flight. Trends should indicate the edge of an intrusion, or some other important features, and when superimposed on the total intensity contour map help greatly to locate the points of inflection, or line of zero curvature.

THE need for improved mine communication to increase efficiency and to insure greater safety has long been recognized. General and unrestricted communication between all points underground, and between the surface and all points underground, is probably the least advanced phase of the mining industry. An ideal system of mine communication must require no fixed wire installations. The equipment must be small, lightweight, and readily portable, and the power requirements low. A system that can be used not only under normal circumstances but also in an emergency, when the continuity of wires, tracks, and pipelines may be disrupted, must function independently of any aid furnished by standard installations. Radio communication offers possibilities of meeting all the requirements necessary for an ideal communication system in underground mines. Transmission of signals must be achieved through one or both of two mediums, through the air in mine openings or through the strata. The results or lack of results obtained by early investigators showed conclusively that radio communication by space transmission cannot be accomplished effectively beyond line-of-sight distances in underground passageways. A radio system underground therefore must depend solely upon transmission through soil and strata. The application of radio to underground mine communication was investigated by many individuals and agencies at different times in the last several decades, but little success was achieved before World war 11.2-0, The results of experiments during the war, and further knowledge gained in experiments with vastly improved communication methods and equipment after the war provided the background for additional research in radio communication in underground mines. During 1950 to 1.952 the University of Minnesota sponsored an investigation to determine the possibility of developing: a system of radio communication universally applicable in underground metal mines in the Lake Superior district. The possibility of using radio equipment to determine the imminence of rock bursts in deep copper mines in that district also was investigated. The investigation supplemented previous and concurrent emergency mine communication studies of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Testing equipment and laboratory facilities maintained by the Bureau of Mines at Duluth, Minnesota, were used in the research program, which was conducted as a mining engineering graduate research problem by the present writer under the direction of T. L. Joseph and E. P. Pfleider. The radio units used in the research program were designed and built to specification solely to conduct tests of radio communication in mines. Two identical units were used in all tests. Each unit contained a transmitter section, a receiver section, and a power-supply section, mounted on a single chassis. The entire unit was enclosed in a single 10x12x18-in. metal case provided with a leather-strap handle for carrying purposes. The front of the case was hinged to open upward and provide easy access to the single control panel on which all controls were mounted. Storage batteries supplied the operating power for all tests. Standard 6-v automobile batteries were utilized to provide adequate capacity to conduct tests for a full day without exhausting the battery. A frequency range from 30 to 200 kc was covered in eight pre-fixed steps on each unit. The carrier frequencies were crystal-controlled and amplitude-modulated. The receiver employed an essentially standard superheterodyne circuit and was sufficiently sensitive to detect signal strengths of 5 micro v. A heterodyne circuit was employed in the transmitter to obtain the low-carrier frequencies used in the units. Power output of the transmitter, usually less than 2 w, rarely exceeded 3 w in any test. Tests were conducted in mines on the Vermillion iron range in Minnesota, the Gogebic iron range in Wisconsin, the Menominee and Marquette iron ranges in Michigan, and a copper mine in the upper Michigan peninsula. All tests were conducted when the mines were operating normally, and usual mining, maintenance, and transportation activities were in progress, so that any interference caused by normal production activities could be evaluated during the tests. Tests were made between different points underground in each mine, and between underground and surface points at some mines. Test readings obtained at any one mine were calibrated in the laboratory before another series of tests were begun at the next mine. The transmitter and receiver were separated by one or more levels in each test, and generally there was no other means of communication between test points. Two 100-ft lengths of rubber-covered wire were used for antenna wires on each unit in both transmission and reception. The ends of the wires were connected to ground points in one of several methods, depending upon physical conditions at each test site. The wires were clipped to metal rods about 200 ft apart in the back, side, or bottom of the mine opening where the character of the rock permitted driving rods. "Investment in diamond exploration has been declining over the past decade, in spite of positive long-term industry fundamentals and a growing interest in diamonds as an investment category. The lack of new significant discoveries in recent years has eroded investor confidence, yet no new discoveries are possible without investment in exploration. Junior ‘mine finders’ have been the hardest hit. Their agility, tenacity, and appetite for risk are not sufficient to attract the funding required, even at the greenfield stage. Developing new discoveries into mineral resources can be crippling without solid financial support. Junior incubators could play a crucial role, especially at the project evaluation stage – but where are they? Alternatives to traditional funding mechanisms have become available, many still untested in the junior diamond exploration space. Valuable lessons can be drawn from the past and used to inform emerging new strategies. IntroductionDiamonds are the ultimate expression of love. Their ancient and timeless allure continues to influence consumer emotions and behaviours across continents, cultures and age groups. Analysts are predicting a sustained supplydemand shortfall in the years ahead which will trend diamond prices generally upwards. With positive long-term industry fundamentals, one cannot help but wonder why funding for diamond exploration and development projects is so scarce.Investment in exploration across commodities – including diamonds – has been declining for a number of years, reaching a historic eleven-year low early in 2017. The lack of major diamond discoveries in recent years has done little to strengthen the case for investing in diamond projects, yet no new discoveries can be made without investment in exploration.Global estimates of known carats in the ground stand currently at 2.5 billion carats, which equates to around 18 years of production at current levels of 140 million carats (mct) per annum. Sustainable replenishment of depleting diamond resources is possible only through the development of new discoveries. This is what junior explorers are best at – but they need investors to fund their evaluation activities from early in the project development continuum."

Pipelines are subject to multiple threats often requiring quantification of pipeline risk and engineering evaluation of in-line inspection and other data to effect discovery of conditions defined by the regulation. Public concern and pressure from regulatory bodies are accelerating the need for pipeline operators to formalize and intensify their approach to integrity management. Most operators need a phased approach to progressively adopt the most relevant and needed assessments. The organized and relevant assessment steps need to be introduced according to data available and maturity of the integrity management program. Each refinement to the quantification offers distinct advantages to the user. In this paper, the progressive integrity assessment solutions using quantitative methods are presented. Methodologies for engineering evaluation of integrity in-line inspection data for immediate and future integrity are summarized. Corrosion is used as an example, but the approach is applicable to any time-dependent defect based hazard. Strategies for pipeline integrity management are discussed.

IN the late thirties, the National Carbide Co. cooperated with C. E. Wood, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in his investigation of the relative merits of various desulphurizers, including soda ash, caustic soda, and calcium carbide. Laboratory tests showed that carbide, when it could be made to react, is an excellent desulphurizing agent for molten iron. Sulphur content can be driven to lower levels and higher extractions obtained with carbide than with actionsany of the more common reagents. Wood's results1 are shown in Table I. Unfortunately, as the Handbook of Cupola Operation puts it, the chemical fact that carbide is a good desulphurizer was of only academic interest because it was found to be extremely difficult to devise a practical means to make it react with molten iron. Calcium carbide is formed in the electric furnace at 4000°F and above, and its softening point is probably at least 500 °F above the usual working temperatures encountered in iron and steel practice. Consequently, carbide does not form a true slag but floats as a dry powder on top of the metal and only a very small portion of it ever comes in actual contact with the iron. Stirring with a rabble, or pouring the metal over the carbide, increases the efficiency only slightly. Extractions of 20 to 30 pct can be obtained in this manner, but conventional soda slag treatment can do better than this and do it more cheaply. All attempts to lower the melting point of carbide in order to obtain a reactive, liquid slag have so far proved fruitless. Directly under the arc in a metallurgical electric furnace, carbide becomes highly reactive. Excellent sulphur removal can be obtained without any slag other than a thin layer of carbide." imilarly, good results are obtained by adding small amounts of carbide to the finishing slag in double-slag arc furnace practice. To react a liquid with a solid, it is axiomatic that the liquid has to wet the solid before anything can happen. If the solid is heavier than the liquid, the problem is easy, but it becomes more difficult when the solid is much lighter than the liquid, as in the case of carbide and liquid iron. Wood recognized this problem and solved it in a unique fashion. The results shown in Table I were obtained by spinning the carbide beneath the surface of the molten iron by means of a refractory centrifuge. This technique allowed each particle of the finely divided carbide to come into intimate contact with the metal and to be wetted thereby. Wood's centrifuge technique was successful in the laboratory where it achieved excellent and consistent results. Some attempts were made to expand this method to commercial practice, but serious difficulty was encountered in obtaining a refractory centrifuge head that would be economically feasible. About this time the war intervened and the project lay dormant for several years. In 1944, it was revived. It was suggested that the carbide could be blown into the metal with a carrier gas in an attempt to eliminate the necessity for the expensive and brittle centrifuge. The idea was first tried out in a fairly large ladle of iron using natural gas as the carrier. Considerable sulphur was removed, but it was quite obvious that the use of natural gas was not practical. Attempts then were made to blow carbide into molten iron using, in turn, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, air, and oxygen. The latter two gases proved unsatisfactory. Calcium evidently prefers oxygen to sulphur because in the tests calcium oxide and carbon dioxide were produced, the sulphur still being untouched in the iron. Nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide gave much better results, although the efficiencies and extractions were erratic, and only a few isolated tests approached the results obtained by Wood. Table II shows typical results obtained with these gases. The sulphur removals were interesting, sometimes even encouraging, but it is evident that such erratic behavior could not be tolerated in commercial practice. A number of different types of equipment, such as sand blasting machines, refractory guns, and the like can used to blow the solid into the metal. All types required relatively large quantities of gas in order to maintain the flow of solid carbide through the system and into the metal. It was observed that the bubbles of gas breaking through the surface of the metal contained quantities of unreacted carbide. The liquid metal never came in contact with these particles and if it cannot wet them it cannot react with them. The initial work had shown that carbide had great possibilities as a desulphurizer. A uariety of eutectic structures are formed in faceted/nonfaceted eutectics. The various structures are explained in terms of the absence or presence of small facets in the liquid groove. Regular structures are produced when, for purely geometric reasons facels cannot form. The presence of a facet in the liquid groove leads to the formation of an irregular or a cell-like complex regular structure, due to the relative immobility of the groove. A classification of eutectics was proposed by Hunt and jackson, based on the presence or absence of facets on the primary phases (the absence of facets may be predicted from the dimensionless entropy of melting2). Eutectics were divided into three groups: 1) eutectics in which both phases grow in a nonfaceted manner; 2) eutectics in which one phase grows faceted, the other nonfaceted; 3) eutectics in which both phases grow faceted. It was suggested that regular1 rodlike or lamellar structures1 should be formed in the first group, that irregular or complex regular structures1 should be formed in the' second, and that irregular structures1 should be formed in the third. Recently it has been shown that the structural classification is incomplete. Regular rodlike structures (InSb-NiSb eutectic3), or broken lamellar structure (Bi-Zn eutectic, Fig. 8), are formed in alloys of the second group when the faceted phase has a large volume fraction. Hunt and jackson' argued that regular structures could form in faceted/nonfaceted systems, but that such structures would be unstable in the presence of microfacets on the lamella of the faceting phase, because the growth rate at a point on such a facet would depend on the kinetic undercooling at the point of nu-cleation on the facet, and not on the local kinetic undercooling. In these circumstances it would not be possible to consistently balance the compositional and kinetic undercooling over a lamellar structure and thus obtain a stable isothermal interface. In this paper we discuss in detail the origin of the various structures formed in faceted/nonfaceted systems, pointing out that the most important factor promoting the formation of a regular structure is the absence of a facet in the liquid groove. 1) FACET FORMATION IN SINGLE-PHASE MATERIALS Facets form when there is an energy barrier for the addition of a new solid layer on an existing solid. When a barrier is present,2 growth proceeds by the lateral movement of steps across a crystallographic plane. The rate-controlling stage of the process occurs when the step is first formed. Hulme and Mullin6 have shown that faceting in single-phase materials can only occur when both interface curvatures are convex with respect to the solid and when the surface is tangential to the facet plane. When even one of the curvatures is concave a facet does not form because new layers of solid from adjacent regions can always feed the facet plane, Fig. 1. Growth under these conditions is then as easy as elsewhere. Similar considerations will apply to eutectic growth; consequently the shape of the faceted phase is extremely important. 2) LAMELLAR SPACING CHANGES IN EUTECTICS Jackson and Hunt7 have shown that the interface undercooling AT of a growing lamellar interface (neglecting kinetic undercooling) is related to the lamellar spacing, A, and growth velocity, v, by an expression of the form: where m, Ql, and nL are constants of the system given in Ref. 7. Eq. [I] is plotted for fixed v in Fig. 2. Jackson and Hunt postulate that a regular eutectic grows near, but to the right of the minimum in the AT vs A curve. They argue that the spacing cannot be to the left of the minimum because the interface is then unstable to fluctuations in A. It cannot grow too far to the right, because when the spacing becomes too wide an isothermal interface can no longer be maintained over the large-volume-fraction phase.7 It is argued that during any change in growth rate the lamellar spacing remains in the permitted range by the movement of lamellar faults. When the spacing is too wide, the fault, shown in Fig. 3, moves to the left; when the spacing is too narrow it moves to the right. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bruce mine of Cyprus Mines Corp. is located in Bagdad, AZ. The mining method used is open cut-and-fill. Of the annual production of 81 647 t (90,000 st), approximately 83% is taken from load-haul-dump (LHD) stopes and the balance from slusher stopes. All ore is produced from the area between the 1250 level and the 2300 level. The average travel time from the shaft pocket to the stope is approximately 5 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The Bruce ore body occurs in quartz-sericite schist with Dick rhyolite on the footwall and andesite on the hanging wall. Diabase dikes are found in the hanging wall; there is also a dike coming off the footwall and crosscutting the ore body. All of the rock types are of the Precambrian Yavapai series and have been subjected to regional metamorphism. A composite of the ore body is given in Fig. 1. The deposit is of massive sulfides occurring as a steeply dipping replacement body. On the upper levels the ore is veinlike with widths from 0.6 to 4.6 m (2 to 15 ft), dipping at 1.4 to 1.5 rad (80° to 85°). On the lower levels the ore is dipping from I to 1.2 rad (60° to 70°) with widths from 3 to 16.8 m (10 to 55 ft). The strike length varies between 107 to 183 m (350 to 600 ft). The rhyolite footwall generally has a knife-edge contact with the massive sulfides. The exceptions to this are the upper levels where there is a 1.5 to 3 m (5 to 10 ft) band of silicified sericite schist between the sulfides and the rhyolite. In the southern part of the ore body the hanging wall is tuffaceous andesite and andesite. In this area the contact is generally sharp and easy to follow. However, to the north there is a large chlorite schist zone that crosscuts the bedding and comes in contact with the massive sulfides. This is apparently due to hydrothermal alteration of the andesite. The chlorite schist is highly mineralized with chalcopyrite and pyrite and quite often forms economic pockets of ore. In the massive sulfides the chief ore minerals are sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Pyrite is the predominant sulfide with considerable pyrrhotite throughout. Bright arsenopyrite ouhedrons in fine grain massive sulfides are quite common. Occasionally small amounts of galena are seen, usually near the foot or hanging wall contacts. On rare occasions tennanite is associated with massive arsenopyrite. Minor amounts of quartz, calcite, and un¬replaced remnants of sericite schist occur, but essentially pyrite is the gangue in which the ore minerals occur. The ore values are in excess of 3.5% copper and 12.5% zinc with some silver and rare gold as byproducts. Ground Conditions The massive sulfides are generally self-supporting. One exception is in the 1850 stope where the ore body is 9 to 11 m (30 to 55 ft) wide and 152 m (500 ft) long. There are flat to shallow dipping slips and seams in the ore, creating extremely blocky ground. For support, old 25.4-mm (1-in.) hoist ropes were installed tensioned to 27 t (30 st), and then cement grouted over the entire length in longholes [14 to 15 in (40 to 50 ft) in length) drilled on 3-m (10-ft) centers from the level above. This has tied the formation together very successfully and virtually eliminated the blocky ground condition. Both the hanging wall and footwall are quite shaley in some areas. Reasons for Adopting Trackless Open Cut-and-Fill Methods First, any method other than open cut-and-fill would have caused too much dilution. The use of rubber-tired mining equipment in the pro¬duction stopes requires a footwall ramp. The inclines in ore will be mined out, so this ramp in the footwall will provide access to and from the stopes (Fig. 2). This incline is very expensive, but necessary to convert existing stopes to LHD mining. 'The final cost of ore mined by the LHD machines has not been determined. As of 1972, tons per manshift in the 2150 stope-the only one to complete a full cut-had increased from 7.58 t (8.36 st) to 12.83 t (14.14

Underground metal mining involves many challenges. Economic slowdown, tough international competition and sometimes volatile metal prices put constant pressure on mine operators to increase productivity and to reduce production cost. At the same time, countries such as Canada, the United States and Australia are experiencing skilled labor shortages that might even stall development of certain mine projects. Furthermore, some stages of underground production take place in particularly hazardous environments where the safety and health of miners is at risk. Automation of some processes in underground mining is one of the promising avenues to alleviate some of these problems. Loading and haulage are among the most critical operations and areas where implementation of autonomous vehicles has been targeted. However, although health and safety issues are a primary driver to opt for automation, the latter should ensure an acceptable level of productivity and pro?tability. With this in mind, this article focuses on the factors affecting operational effectiveness of autonomous underground loading and haulage equipment and the means to maximize it.
