Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. "Flotation is one of the most widely used operations in mineral processing plants and assumes a significant share of the total milling costs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new set of capital and operating cost models for major flotation machines based on the application of single (SRA) and multiple regression analysis (MRA). Thirty-seven major flotation machines were analysed for this purpose. Depending on the machinery type, different technical variables such as diameter, required air flow rate, required floor space, cell volume, required air pressure, and power were considered as predictor variables, individually (in SRA) or simultaneously (in MRA). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used in MRA due to the high correlation between predictive variables. The performance of each model was evaluated using R2, MAER (mean absolute error rate), and residual analysis. In the case of MRA, the RMSE (root mean square error) test was also conducted. Maximum obtained MAER of 13.5% and minimum R2 of 0.86 indicated that these models could be applied as credible tools in estimation of capital and operating costs of flotation machines for design and feasibility studies.IntroductionMineral processing is a vital part of mining projects and mainly involves comminution, sizing, concentration, extractive metallurgical processes, and dewatering. Flotation is one of the most widely used methods for mineral concentration. Flotation can represent the second major cost item in mineral processing after grinding (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2011). Accordingly, it is a main concern of mining project managers to select and optimize flotation circuits in order to decrease costs and increase productivity. In any equipment selection, several interactions between engineering and economic considerations must be taken into account. Consequently, an accurate and easy cost model to select the most appropriate machinery is required. Moreover, cost models could be used in flow sheet simulations applied in design and optimization. Models of unit operations built into the simulators could be improved by linking the equipment cost models (Khalesi et al., 2015)."

THERE is a tendency on the part of practical foundrymen to accept with reluctance the results of tests on sands, binders, and. such materials made in the chemical laboratory alone. They feel that such tests frequently emphasize and measure properties that are of minor importance and fail to take account of characteristics that are important in determining the value of the material in actual practice. Experience seems to indicate that the most thorough and conclusive, test for any new foundry material is an actual run in the foundry alongside of a standard material of known value. Such a test, however, involves certain difficulties and necessitates certain precautions. It is not always easy to obtain a fair trial for a new material. We all have certain prejudices, which unconsciously affect our judgment to a marked degree. A practical test frequently involves so many workmen, each of whom reacts in a different manner to the test, that; the personal equation becomes very, complex and the true results of the test are obscured. There are times, too, when a thorough experimental trial of a material would interfere too much with the rush of work in a department or would hazard the quality, of the product to such an extent as to make it inadvisable. Under such conditions a laboratory test is advisable before the material is sent into the foundry. These tests should be made as practical as possible and so closely related to foundry practice as to give a true index to the value of a, product for the purpose desired. Core sands and molding sands are as numerous "as the sands of the sea" and vary as much in quality. Old sources of supply are continually failing and new ones must be opened, so that we must continually search for new and better grades of sand. "The article introduces the process EAF with De-P hot metal charging for Melting Stainless Steel in Baosteel stainless steel Branch. Based on the practice of production, the main effect on the Cr Loss during EAF with De-P Hot Metal Charging Melting Stainless Steel including using oxygen, the material charging and making slag are theoretically analyzed. The optimization of using oxygen can reduce the oxidation of Cr during EAF Melting Stainless Steel. The optimization of material charging, especially Si content is suitable can reduce the loss of Cr. Effective reduction can realize the lowest Cr oxide in slag. Based on the character of the process EAF with De-P hot metal charging for Melting Stainless Steel, applied the integrated control method, the Cr loss during EAF melting stainless steel decreased 43.10%. 1 INTRODUCTION EAF with De-P HM charging for melting stainless steel is a technology for stainless steel making. Practice prove that the new process can shorten tap to tap time, reduce the special power consumption, dilute the impurity element from the stainless steel scrap that is propitious to produce the high quality stainless steel, alleviate the shortage of stainless steel scrap to the production. As a new technology, the process has some technical problems and difficulties. The proportion of Cr alloy charging exceeds 20% during EAF with De-P hot metal charging melting stainless steel. As Cr alloy is difficult melting and easy oxidation, too much Cr alloy charging result in Cr loss too much and tap to tap time too long for EAF production. By applying the new technology, Baosteel stainless steel branch has increased the technology level and economy index. Now the content of Cr oxide in slag reduce from 8.59% to less than 6.0%. The Cr loss during EAF melting stainless steel decreased 43.10%. According to the practice application, the process of EAF with De-P HM melting stainless steel are theoretically analyzed. The main factors affecting the Cr loss during EAF with De-P hot metal charging melting stainless steel are discussed."

Venezuela has continued during 1929 to demonstrate that it is destined for many years to come to be one of our most important sources of crude petroleum. The producing fields of the Bolivar Coastal district along the east side of Lake Maracaibo have continued their phenomenal production, and two new fields have reached the near producing stage, while the results of deep test wells have strengthened the predictions and expectations that oil will be found and produced from many other pools and from several different geological formations. The finding of these new oil pools is not going to be easy, because the surface evidences of geological structure are scanty, and the subsurface problems are difficult, but intelligent effort backed by ample resources may be counted upon to overcome these obstacles and lead to a continued increase in the number of producing fields in Venezuela. During 1929 the total production of Venezuela was approximately 135,953,000 bbl., an increase of nearly 30,000,000 bbl., or 28 per cent., as compared with the preceding year. During 1929 oil in steel storage in Venezuela decreased from 13,000,000 to about 11,000,000 barrels. Tables 1, 2 and 3 briefly summarize Venezuelan production by fields and by years, and show the trend of production since its establishment on a commercial basis. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o equipamento de medição automática de placas desenvolvido pela ArcelorMittal Tubarão na área de condicionamento de placas. Anteriormente este processo era realizado de forma manual pelos inspetores. Esse equipamento visa facilitar a rotina de trabalho do inspetor e aumentar a qualidade da medição, assim como diminuir a dispersão dos dados eliminando a divergência nas medições das placas que se verificava entre diferentes operadores, além de possibilitar a criação de um histórico das medidas de toda placa. Para validação do equipamento o mesmo foi submetido a um sistema de analise de medição e teve seu resultado aprovado, no momento atual o mesmo se encontra em funcionamento para se realizar uma comparação estatística do seu desempenho em relação aos inspetores..

"En 1953, se habilita la nueva planta de flotación de cobre en Paragsha, donde el funcionamiento de las soleras tipo Lorain y la producción del mineral pirita lograron buenos resultados. Empero las nuevas condiciones de proceso, limitaron su funcionamiento y costo. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del trabajo se basa en la construcción de una solera de mayor rendimiento y menor costo, modificando su diseño al de una honda contínua. El primer juego de este diseño fue instalado en el molino de cobre Nº 1, sin aún obtener el dato final sobre su rendimiento. Posteriormente se consideró la solera AMSCO, dado que el diseño fue más eficiente y el costo final por tonelada fue menor. Sin embargo, se encontró que el contorno del valle era muy cerrado y las bolas N°4 se alojaban de modo ajustado, formando una solera muy gruesa. En consecuencia, se construyó otro diseño denominada ""Solera de onda abierta contínua"", el cual fue instalado en el molino de cobre N°7, donde la capacidad de molienda es igual de óptima y los costos son menores. Así, se pensó que la solera de una sola honda, es mejor que la de onda contínua puesto que este diseño tiene una sola honda en el centro de cada plancha de la solera. Luego, se diseño un tercer diseño, donde el promedio de vida era mejor. Por ello, de los tres diseños a seleccionar -la solera Lorain con 10 hondas, la solera de una honda con 20 hondas y la solera de honda continua de 30 hondas -, la última demostró ser la más eficiente. De otro lado, se probaron otros diseños de honda contínua con distintas aleaciones como el ""Nihard"", cuyo promedio de vida es entre 14 y15 meses aproximadamente, con el tonelaje actual de aproximadamente 270 000. Concluyendo que la experiencia anterior con solerasNihard en molinos a rodillos de 4 pies de diámetro, el impacto es mayor, obteniéndose en quebrantamiento de soleras a 3/4 grosor, pero que pese a esto, resulta ser superior a cualquier otra solera usada actualmente y en eñ que Paragsha esté 100% con soleras de molinos Nihard, a excepción de las rejillas dada su fragilidad. "

This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober<sup>®</sup> economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. MESABI RANGE ore is mined largely by the open-pit method. This involves having available at all times sufficient working places which in combination will produce ore of guaranteed analysis. Fast- loading power shovels turn out under favorable conditions 1000 tons per hour from each unit. Each unit loads ore differing materially in analysis from that loaded by the others, One may load high grade, another low grade, and another may be in a mixed bank with the lead ore so placed that the product must be mixed at the shovel before it is loaded into cars. In such cases the bank is combed with the bucket, the door being left open to permit the material to fall through.

Laramide porphyry copper deposits are large, low grade (<0.8% Cu) deposits that contain disseminated copper minerals, breccias, and stockwork veinlets of copper and molybdenum sulfides associated with porphyritic intrusions in Southwestern New Mexico. Critical minerals, such as PGEs, tellurium, indium, germanium, and gallium are recovered from the anode slimes remaining after copper is refined. Detailed age dating, mineralogy, geochemistry, along with geologic mapping could refine the location of critical minerals within specific systems and could identify porphyry systems with elevated critical minerals that could become economic, in addition to the already produced copper, gold and molybdenum.

Steelmaking slag is a by-product in considerable volume and a valuable material for various applications. In general, steelmaking slag is an alkaline compound of CaO, Fe2O3, and SiO2. However, its characteristics varies depending on the feedstocks, steelmaking process and cooling method of the slag. To utilize this by-product effectively, this study investigated the characteristics of steelmaking slags taken from Wuhan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. The results showed that the slags mainly consist of the oxides of calcium, iron, and silicon, with low contents of magnesia, alumina, and manganese oxide with a feature of high alkalinity and lime saturation factor. The major mineral phases include belite, calcium ferrite, calcium hydroxide, wustite, quartz, and small amount of elite. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated the weight loss from ambient temperature to 800 °C is 8% in total. Melting test showed the glass transition temperature is between 1300 and 1350 °C, flow temperature is about 1400 °C. The slag samples investigated in this study can be considered as a typical glass-ceramic composite.

FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides. from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another.. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gangue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective minerals; and, as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface properties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

THE PROCESSES USED FOR THE rolling of zinc are not novel or unique in a mechanical sense. There has not been so widespread a tendency toward heavy slabs and mechanical handling, and toward 3-high and continuous mills as has taken place with steel and with some of the other nonferrous metals. Those respects in which the rolling of zinc differs from the rolling of other metals center around two facts. First, the hexagonal zinc crystal has only one plane of easy slip: namely, the basal plane. Fortunately, however, the crystal twins readily on any of the pyramidal planes, thereby creating new basal planes favorably oriented for relief of the stress which has caused twinning. Second, the recrystallization temperature of zinc is little above room temperature and for very pure grades of zinc may in fact, be at room temperature for severely strained material. The practical effect of these two characteristics of zinc will become evident in the later discussion. First, it is necessary to give some attention to the melting and casting of billets for rolling. Reverberatory furnaces are commonly used for melting. These vary over a wide range of capacity from as low as 5 tons to 100 tons or over. Low-frequency electric furnaces have also been used with satisfactory results. Arc Furnaces are, of course unsuited to a low-melting and lute-boiling metal, such as zinc. To minimize oxidation and volatilization losses in the furnace, the temperature should be kept below 500°C. With this temperature in the melting furnace, a suitable pouring temperature in the neighborhood of 460°C can he maintained at the mold when a transfer ladle is used for pouring.

The relative merits of air and natural gas as propulsive agents in pressure drive operations have been discussed for a number of years. When air or gas is introduced into the sand, various factors lead the operator to the selection of what he believes to be the proper propelling medium; but when the question of relative drive effect is raised, several physical and chemical premises must be taken into consideration in arriving at a conclusion as to the superiority of one medium over the other. Dow and Calkins1 and Beecher and Parkhurst2 have contributed fundamental experimental work on the effect of dissolved gas in lowering the viscosity and surface tension of crude oil. Herold; and Tickell&apos; have indicated that whatever type of reservoir control obtains, gas plays other important parts in the movement of oil towards the well, namely: 1. The propulsive and expansive force of the gas. 2. The "Jamin effect," or resistance to the movement of oil in a porous media due to the formation of gas bubbles. When quantitative studies are made, parallel conditions must be selected whereby we may say definitely whether air is superior to gas as a driving medium, or vice versa. Examples of similar conditions are not easy to find in the field. However, in the laboratory we can make determinations which may lead to general conclusions when applied to the field. The experimental and research work described here was started at the laboratories of the University of California in January, 1927, and completed in private laboratories at Tulsa, Okla., in February, 1928. The apparatus used was designed especially for the work.

Since many new mineral processing systems under development can impose severe corrosive conditions on construction materials, the Bureau of Mines reviewed and assessed the literature on corrosion resistance of ceramic materials. Corrosive conditions were categorized as: (1) acids and aqueous solutions, (2) glass and slag/metal melts, and (3) gases. Information on the corrosion resistance of ceramic materials, generally, is disseminated by many sources, each of which is interested in specific corrosive environments. Based on this survey, it was noted that (I) the development of standardized tests is needed to study solution-type corrosion of ceramics, (2) slag/melt corrosion data are the most comprehensive of the available data, and (3) better definition of corrosion mechanisms In gaseous environments is needed.

Además de los pasivos ambientales mineros que a la fecha oscilan entre los 6900 y 70001 a nivel nacional, existen otras unidades mineras que corren el riesgo de quedar abandonadas o ser paralizadas de forma definitiva, incrementando el patrimonio minero inactivo. Al respecto, su falta de atención, su gestión deficiente y los escenarios limitados que existen para su tratamiento, comprometen seriamente el desarrollo sostenible que se exige para todas las actividades y etapas vinculadas a la minería. En ese escenario, se deben evaluar otras alternativas que permitan un mejor aprovechamiento de dicho patrimonio, que sostenga equilibradamente el desarrollo económico, la protección ambiental y la promoción social.

A moderna construção automotiva vem adotando uma série de estratégias para tornar os carros cada vez mais seguros e ecológicos. Dentre elas, o uso intensivo de aços de alta resistência tem proporcionado grandes avanços nos automóveis, principalmente aqueles ligados à segurança veicular. A escolha de um determinado aço é hoje definida, não só pela resistência mecânica, mas também pelos atributos do material ligados a sua aplicação. Assim, a composição química, as variáveis de processo, e, consequentemente, a microestrutura do aço, devem ser reflexo desses atributos. O presente trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um aço multifásico da classe de resistência de 1180 MPa na Usiminas, assim como suas características mecânicas que influenciam a sua aplicação. São apresentados aspectos das simulações efetuadas em escala piloto, a consolidação das informações obtidas e o trabalho de engenharia de produto realizado para o desenvolvimento industrial.

Since 2011 mineral cargo shippers shall comply with the Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code regulatory framework, established by the International Maritime Organization. Some mineral cargos may liquefy during passage, under certain conditions, if the moisture content is beyond a certain level, and the cargo shifting may jeopardize the stability of the vessel. For cargos which are susceptible to this phenomenon the IMSBC Code stablishes that the moisture content shall be below the Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) for safe transportation by sea. Iron ore fines TML can be determined through the Modified Proctor/Fagerberg Test for Iron Ore Fines. Knowledge related to the TML has become essential to shippers, and research works related to this parameter are increasingly frequent. However, the typical daily productivity for having a TML result through this method is one up to two samples per executant person, requiring approximately 50 kg per sample. This study presents a practical example of the application of a prediction model for estimating the TML. The model application reduced substantially the laboratory work and sample quantity requirement for obtaining conclusions related to the TML.

The Bureau of Mines studied the use of computerized, continuous, remote monitoring systems for safety from power system faults in underground coal mines. In this report the need to improve protection against power system faults is documented, and types of faults are identified. The relationship between mine safety regulations and computerized, continuous, remote monitoring is analyzed.
